Looks like Yahoo's fantasy hockey is up for registration already... anyone want to take the reins for this season??
http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey/
-
I'll do it if Brent doesn't want it again.
-
I'm in regardless. :)
-
I'm in regardless as well.
I'd start the conversation by saying that we should try to expand the scoring categories if it's possible and reasonable to do so.
Even if all we can do is change up the value of a goal vs. an assist vs. a win vs. a shutout.
-
I think we should leave everything the way it was last year... 8)

Me commish, you go away Ryan :P

Roster Positions: C, C, LW, LW, RW, RW, F, D, D, D, D, Util, G, BN, BN, BN, BN, IR, IR
Stat Categories: G, A, +/-, PIM, W, L, SHO
I'll tinker with stats categories as discussions go here. I upped the points for shutouts, added -1 for losses and there is only one goalie slot. Added a utility slot (can play C/RW/LW/D) and a forward slot (C/RW/LW). PIM is in but can be dropped or the value upped or lowered. I'm not a fan of making a goal worth more than an assist. There are plenty of other scoring categories in there as well that we can add - short handed, power play, game winning, etc. Have a look and we'll edit as the group sees fit.
G = 1 point
A = 1 point
+/- = +1 or -1 point
PIM = 0.2 pts per
W = 2 points
L = -1 point
SO = 4 points?
Quick note: they aren't letting me modify the stats modifiers (i.e. points per whatever) at the moment but it's up there so in time it will happen.

Me commish, you go away Ryan :P
Fine by me.
Scoring looks fine as is to me, maybe we could add +1 for SHGs and GWGs?
Did we do away with a bench spot or two, in addition to the goalie, and that's why we have the Forward and Ultility spots? It seems that 12 skaters and a Goalie are too many. Maybe we could do away with the forward spot but keep the utility?
-
It's mostly from the discussion at the end of the last season. I'd played in another league with both and it worked fine, though I'll readily admit the talent was getting awfully thin.
We lost a bench spot (previously 5) but gained an IR (previously 1) and did away with a goalie slot.
I also upped the games per position to 90 following much of last year's lamenting from multiple sources. It seemed a pretty consistent comment from a number of sources and much aggravation to me. So I pushed it from 82 to 90. It's not much, but then again I still don't see the need, so it's a concession on my part. You can't play your star more than 82 games in the real league so I'm not sure why it applies here. But like I said, more than one person's opinion was to have it that way.
We can add SHG, GWG and more if you like. They're sort of wild card points in my mind because you never really know who will pot those goals. You'd think it would be the stars but it's not necessarily the case.
We can also do partial points in those categories if you like. At least I think you can because you can manipulate PIM a lot.

Currently I have the live draft set for Friday, September 15th at 10:30 CST.
Yes, it sucks. I don't know if the yahoo system is that bunged up, that full or if they haven't opened up all the slots yet, but that is the latest date I can get that actually has an evening slot. Everything else is during the daytime and that's not real good for me or probably others. I can probably get an earlier date at a different time and on a different day, but I doubt that's desirable.
As hard as it is to believe, the season is only a month and a couple of days away. I'm not opposed to a forum draft either, but I'd suggest we start that around the 20th of September or so as well, so I have some time to enter the results.
I must confess though, I'm a much bigger fan of the live drafts now than the forum drafts, if only from a commissioner point of view.
Also no one is signed up yet, other than yours truly. ;)
-
I'll have to clear the date with the Mrs. (:-[), but I think that should work for me...
Also no one is signed up yet, other than yours truly. ;)
:)
-
I guess no one else really needs to sign up given we went 1-2 in the league. :P
-
I went #3 and I'm in. Weekends are tough for me as far as the draft goes... Not because I'm a party animal, but because I keep getting forced to leave town on short notice lately... if it's all there is, I'll try to be there though.
-
Someone has to finish last...

It really is. It's the latest day with an evening time slot. Anything after that the latest I can get is 5 PM :-\
I'm not opposed to pushing it earlier, but that date is only two weeks away. I'll check for earlier that week times.
-
Even if it could be ONE day earlier it would be better for me - if the evening slots are there.
-
September 5
September 6
September 7
Those are the days that are fairly open with respect to times. The 8th is as well, but that doesn't match the non-weekendish criteria. I'm not keen on drafting next week, but I'll adapt pretty easily if the group wants to. Judging by how quiet this place gets on the weekend, I'm not sure we'd be able to pull it off, with the long weekend added on.
BTW, I'm not opposed to a forum draft, I'm just lazy. I picked the time for a live draft simply because the stuff closer to the season seems to be being picked off pretty quickly, much as it did with the NFL stuff. I can easily change the draft to offline.
Sorry Rob, missed your post. Even one day earlier we're looking at 5 PM. It's crazy.
-
**** it, I'm in again.
-
September 5, 6 or 7 all work for me. If you need to leave it how it is right now on that Friday at 10:30 I'll make it work.
-
I'm fine with the 7th. My only concern is a lack of time for people to prepare, considering it's pretty much the weekend. Is it a long weekend down there this weekend or is it next? Ours is this weekend.
Just worried about guys having time and enough notice to sign up and prepare.
Missing who from last year right now?
Jesse
Jaime
Holo E (Jason)
Scott
One more person is missing I think. We had 10 last year, didn't we? I've set the league to allow for 12 players btw, so we can add two that didn't play if we want.
So alternate draft date currently is September 07 and the times as of right now are pretty open, so I can make it more appealing for the east coasters.
-
Also since we might be on short notice, take a chance to review the important aspects of the scoring:
Max Games Played: 90
Roster Positions: C, C, LW, LW, RW, RW, F, D, D, D, D, Util, G, BN, BN, BN, BN, IR, IR
Stat Categories: G, A, +/-, PIM, W, L, SHO
G = 1 point
A = 1 point
+/- = +1 or -1 point
PIM = 0.2 pts per
W = 2 points
L = -1 point
SO = 4 points?
I'm into adding short handed goals (SHG) and game winning goals at a point each if you guys like.
-
I'd prefer the 15th as next week is going to be hectic as all **** (traveling until Tuesday and then two bids go in Thursday and Friday).
Is it a long weekend down there this weekend or is it next? Ours is this weekend.
Yep
Scoring is fine however you want to do it.

Here's the list from last year, but I think Ryan took someone's spot didn't he? I would have had the exact list but I just deleted the Fantasy hockey link from last year last week.
1: Mikey.
2: Brent.
3: Kevin.
4: Jesse J.
5: Rob.
6: Scott.
7: Jesse V.
8: Jeff.
9: Jason.
10: Jamie.
-
It's Kevbo that's missing then.

No, someone just listed Jesse James instead of me for some reason.
-
Personally, I'd prefer the 15th as well since the upcoming week will be nuts around here. My wife and daughter return from a trip on the 5th, then my daughter's birthday is on the 6th and her first day of Kindergarten is the 7th. (And then I'll need the 8th to recover from seeing my little girl growing up and starting school ;)).
I think the scoring looks good. If we add a couple categories, I'd suggest SH goals and OT goals because I think they are more meaningful compared to GW goals. Just an idea. :)
BTW, the Pushers are ready to knock Jeff off his podium. :D
-
I'm seeing a leaning towards the 15th. I'll keep checking for other times during the week, maybe they release some later.
Still can't set the stats modifiers but I can change/add/delete different categories. Here are the choices:
Forwards/Defensemen
Goals (G)
Assists (A)
Points (P)
Plus/Minus (+/-)
Penalty Minutes (PIM)
Powerplay Goals (PPG)
Powerplay Assists (PPA)
Powerplay Points (PPP)
Shorthanded Goals (SHG)
Shorthanded Assists (SHA)
Shorthanded Points (SHP)
Game-Winning Goals (GWG)
Shots on Goal (SOG)
Shooting Percentage (SH%)
Faceoffs Won (FW)
Faceoffs Lost (FL)
Goaltenders
Games Started (GS)
Wins (W)
Losses (L)
Goals Against (GA)
Goals Against Average (GAA)
Shots Against (SA)
Saves (SV)
Save Percentage (SV%)
Shutouts (SHO)
LMK what you think is interesting aside from the standard categories. Personally I'm not much in favor of changing too much, especially for goalies. Just wins (2), losses (-1) and shutouts (4). GA and the others really make the goalies negative point getters overall and detract from the position.
For skaters, Goals (1), assists (1) are standard, the rest up for debate. Penalty minutes (PIM) would be set low (0.1-0.2) because at one point per, you can load up on goons and do quite well. Old time hockey...Toe Blake....Eddie Shore...is all fine and dandy, but I prefer skill.
-
Count me in for another go this year, I just signed up.
-
Here's my preferences:
Forwards/Defensemen
Goals (G)
Assists (A)
Penalty Minutes (PIM) - I like the idea of 0.2 points/minute
Powerplay Goals (PPG) - I also like the idea of a couple new goals categories
Shorthanded Goals (SHG)
Goaltenders
Wins (W)
Losses (L)
Shutouts (SHO)
-
Anyone else interested?
-
What say you Brent on a draft time, oh mighty commissioner?
-
Same as the league notes say when you click on the yahoo page :P
Couldn't get an earlier suitable time, so it remains this Friday night at 10:30 PM central and it's a live, online draft. Could still use a team or two more if anyone else is interested.
I'm being a prick and retaining the settings I mentioned with the following:
LW 2
RW 2
C 2
F 1
U 1
D 4
G 1
B 4
IR 2
So 17 rounds for the draft.
90 games per slot as a result of last year's discussions. That's up and I still remain opposed to it but I think it's a reasonable compromise.
I still can't edit the stats modifiers but plan on setting them as:
G = 1pt
A = 1 pt
GWG = 1 pt (this makes a goal that wins the game worth two overall)
SHG = 1 pt (same here, 2 point goal essentially)
+/- = +1 for +; -1 for - duh. (I can modify this to 0.5 points if folks want.)
W = 2 points
L = -1 point
SO = 4 points
Sadly yahoo has not modified the goalie position points to allow for goals or assists, so if your guy gets them, you don't. I did email them about it but never heard back from them. I'm guessing there are bigger issues to tackle, like discrepancies in fantasy NASCAR scoring.
Draft order is random and decided by the yahoo system about 30 minutes before the draft. Bring beer, I know I will.
-
it remains this Friday night at 10:30 PM central and it's a live, online draft.
That should work for me.
Also, the scoring works for me too... it doesn't matter to me what the stats we use are, the results will be the same as last year. 8)
Bring beer, I know I will.
Beer... and at 10:30pm, possibly a crying baby as well. :P
-
What difference does it make if we have 82 or 90 games per position? Wasn't it Jason who wasn't liking the game cap how it was? And isn't he not playing this year?
I don't see any reason to have the extra games.
-
Not only Jason that made the comments. It was actually more than a few guys and so long as we change it up front, it matters not really. And Jason may yet join the league.
Just took a peek (around page 54-55) and the bigger issue was changing it during the season, which we did not. Looks like Jason, Ryan and Jeff to a much lesser extent were in favor of altering the cap. Rob and I were pretty adamant about the 82 game limit and Jesse, Scott and Kevin were seemingly less adamant but more on line with the changing the rule two weeks into the season.
If you guys don't have a big problem with it, we'll run at 90 games and see how it goes.
-
I'm cool with it either way - just askin'
-
I guess I better take a look through my NHL Fantasy League mag and brush up for the upcoming year. I'll be there for the draft Friday night, thankfully I don't have to work. Just to be sure, 10:30pm Central would be 8:30pm Pacific, right? Since I've moved, I can't keep the whole daylight savings shenanigans straight. ::)
Regarding the 82 vs 90 game rule, I'm fairly indifferent, so we could run with 90 and see how it goes.
Also, the scoring works for me too... it doesn't matter to me what the stats we use are, the results will be the same as last year. 8)
Let the trash talking begin! :D
-
Nice - at 9:30EST the baby will be sleeping and hopefully I'll be drunk. I really love online drafts, so much better than forum drafting. I did one with baseball and football this year and they both have run pretty smoothly. Also opens the opportunity for a bit of trash talking.
-
Ok then, we'll run the 90 as an experiment at the very least. Thanks.
Jesse, you're now forever 2 hours post-central. Meaning yes, 10:30 central is 8:30 Pacific.

Having snooped through last year's online draft, I'm in agreement. Online is just short, sweet and efficient. Best part is I don't have to manually enter the damn teams.
-
Anyone else? Khevbo?
-
24 hours to go, best get any suggestions for changes in scoring in now.
-
Apparently I didn't do too well in my geography class in grade school. For some reason I had in my head that 10:30CST was 9:30EST, while it's actually 11:30EST (duh) ::)
Oh well, guess I'll just be drunker. I might not make the entire thing, but will do the best I can before I pass out and just let the computer handle the rest.
-
While goofing around on Yahoo waiting for the draft, I realized that your Yahoo Sports profile captures all your past Yahoo Fantasy Sports performances. :o
http://profiles.sports.yahoo.com/jlsmentek
2005 Hockey Champion
2001 Football Champion
2001 Baseball - 2nd Place
2001 Hockey - 2nd Place
2004 Baseball - 3rd Place
That's right - 5 trophies! I had forgotten all those old 2001 leagues I played in with my buddies...
-
Fourth? :-\
And is that Rob in the top third? :o
-
The Law of averages will have me picking in the top 3 for the next 3 leagues!

I've got a 1st place in football, a 1st place in Basketball and a 3rd place in Hockey. I'm looking to grab a 3rd in Baseball this year and I'm on pace to get a freebie 3rd for Golf.
Not bad considering that I've only been in since 2004.
Oh, and I plan to come up with at least another bronze for this league too. 8)
-
Brent what is up with the scoring? It shows Rotissierie instead of points, is a points based league not an option?
-
Brent what is up with the scoring? It shows Rotissierie instead of points, is a points based league not an option?
Lack of attention to detail :-[
It has been corrected, thanks.
-
That threw me off last night after the draft too but I just assumed I'd missed something, not Brent.
Good to see it fixed.
Also, it's my own fault for not checking and paying enough attention to what you posted as far as scoring or knowing enough about hockey, but I thought Penalty minutes were bad.
G = 1pt
A = 1 pt
GWG = 1 pt (this makes a goal that wins the game worth two overall)
SHG = 1 pt (same here, 2 point goal essentially)
+/- = +1 for +; -1 for - duh. (I can modify this to 0.5 points if folks want.)
W = 2 points
L = -1 point
SO = 4 points
What did I miss?
Looks like we're getting +1 for a loss right now, should be -1
And I don't see -1 for being -1 on the +/- thing, is that set how it should be? If it's still up for discussion, I'd be cool with knocking it to -0.5 points for being -1
-
Sorry for the confusion guys.
Corrected the loss category for goalies. I'm assuming way too much logic in the yahoo system that isn't there. I'd assumed putting in '1' would result in a negative category (losses) being a negative modifier. Not so, but I can add in the - for -1 to get it right and have done so. Thanks for catching that Rob.
I'm not sure post draft we can modify anything beyond my own stupid errors with setting up the league physically. I know I drafted with the points scheme being as it was, so I'm not keen on reducing stuff.
Interesting side point: if you've ever tried to figure out how and why the Rank and O-rank differ in yahoo hockey, it's because there's a formula based on the scoring system in place. And it's awfully close to what we drafted with. The plus/minus being a goodly chunk of it.
I calculated the point totals for all the guys down to about 250 players using our scoring scheme and drafted a number of guys that might have otherwise not made sense to some of you where I drafted them last night. I drafted guys, notably defensemen, with fewer goals and assists but had a good +/- rating so had a better overall total score. Gonchar is a good example of this. He's certainly my favorite defender, but playing on Pittsburgh and having a losing record hurts his value making him fairly average. If we tinker with the +/- stat now, his value goes up.
-
Since I'm going to be learning how these new categories work as the league progresses, I'm fine with leaving everything how it is now.
I did goof up the penalty minutes thing though - somehow I got it in my head that we'd be losing points for penalty minutes. Maybe because the word penalty is part of penalty minute.
-
I can understand that but think of a guy like Bertuzzi, pre-Moore. It's supposedly a benefit, but the 0.2 point per minute is pretty low. Last year in the spawn league we had it at 1 per pim and it was nutty. Goons were as valuable as Jagr. I think it will be ok anyway as I didn't really go after PIM and I don't think anyone else did. But I did go after +/-.
-
I looked over your roster Rob, it won't affect you negatively at all. You had a good draft.
-
Good to know. Thanks.
-
I was supposed to have Friday night off from work, but my boss didn't tell me about a schedule change. >:(
Anyway, I'm stoked to have Crosby again.
-
So yours was autopicking? Ouch, between you and Rob you guys took about 7-8 guys I was eyeing for the same round.
-

Yeah, I agree. I passed on him (and a few other D-men) because of nasty +/- ratings. If they scoring were different, I might have made different picks.
I say we try the +1/-1 thing and if it sucks, well there is always next year. :P
With the penalty minutes, 0.2 is fine - a nice bonus, but still gives more power/value to offensive guys.
-
So yours was autopicking? Ouch, between you and Rob you guys took about 7-8 guys I was eyeing for the same round.
Oooh Oooh, like who?
-
Autobot (Jesse):
Phaneuf
Morrow
Savard (I have no idea why he lasted that long anyway)
M. Bell
Lehtonen
Rob:
Elias
Brind'Amour
Rozsival
I'd say I had those guys marked on a piece of paper with the expectation they'd get back to me in the following round. I can't blame you on Elias, I think he was a steal at that point anyway and I had him marked as take in 4th round before the draft started, but you took him right before >:( ;)
My fault really, I wanted a top tier defenseman but the (mini) run on them started earlier than I expected. I had no intention of taking Schneider in the second round, but Pronger and Lidstrom were gone already.
But little auto-draft was really driving me koo-koo. No way should it have picked Phaneuf, Lehtonen or Bell. I can only assume Jesse did some pre-ranking because those guys (except Phaneuf) should have been pretty low in the rankings. Oh well, we'll see what happens.
-

If my draft has one glaring hole IMO it's that I skipped out on that run of top defensemen. We'll see if it kills me or not... there were a few times pike Pitkanen that I was aiming for a guy only to have him be drafted before I picked - then I kept postponing it. People definitely started taking them a little higher than I thought they would. Maybe that allowed people who didn't go after them to get better offensive players... who knows.
We'll see if it's the death of me or not... maybe a few weeks in I'm trying to trade for some defensive help.
-
Just sent out the email for the work hockey pool that I run. I can hardly wait until the complaints and stupid comments start rolling in. The biggest one last year was that I didn't bring a player list for everyone to the draft. ::)
-
I got all excited about the start of fantasy hockey tonight - only to check my team this morning and find that I have exactly ONE player going this evening.
Oh well.
-
Yeah, it's pretty slim pickings and doesn't really wind up until Saturday. Last year's first day was unusual and they wanted to ride the return of hockey pretty badly. This year though it's only three months and change since the season ended, so no real need.
Only 8 of us in our work pool this year (down from 14 - many felt it required too much attention to play this kind of pool ::)). We run 6 F, 3 D, 1 G, 2 bench and 1 IR. Just G/A for skaters; W/L/SO for goalies. 82 game cap. The rosters are pretty amazing really and the point totals should be cool to see. My roster:
Dany Heatley (don't worry, I took him with the 7th pick this time)
Marian Hossa
Niklas Lidstrom
Scott Niedermayer
Patrik Elias
Sergei Zubov
Marian Gaborik
Martin Brodeur
Mark Bell
Mike Modano
Martin Havlat
Henrik Lundquist
Should be interesting. I started the run on D-men and to my surprise, the guys picking after me ignored it and I was able to scoop Niedermayer right after Lidstrom 8)
-
I was just perusing the stats for the league and this is going to be fun, much more so than just straight points leagues I think. But I can already say that the PIM setting is much, much better than we had in the spawn league I was in last year. Cole has an assist and 4 PIM and I immediately expected to see 3 points in the total column but only saw 1.8. Much better being at 0.2 rather than 0.5. Adds a nice dimension too.
One annoying aspect will be if you have too many guys on one team and their goalie though. If they get blown out 7-0 and you have two guys and the goalie, you could really lose a whack of points in one night. ;D
-

And in a stunning effort to emphasize my above point, I ended up on the negative side of the points scheme tonight, eating into last night's total as well :o :'(
Shutouts will bite hard if you're on the losing team.
-
Imagine having two guys who play on the same line and then having them be -3 for the night.
This is fun though - at one point I was tied for last, then I was in first, then third, then first, and now second.
Lots of up and downs with the negative points so easy to come by here.
-
If they get blown out 7-0 and you have two guys and the goalie, you could really lose a whack of points in one night. ;D
Or, maybe your stud ends up on the ice for 4 of the 5 goals against you:
-3.60 from my #1 pick tonight. ::)
-
Jason goes to first place with 16 points last night. I drop from first to second last and have less points than I would have if I hadn't started anybody at all, dropping four points total. Yeowch.
Going to be some wacky-ass thought going into managing a team this year.
-
My score seems to be going in reverse. >:(
-
Yay! I'm in last place! ::)
-
No, that would be me. My team has 19 points now to your 23. My guys are -6 for the season and haven't scored hardly any points since that first big night.
-
Whooo hooo - out of the basement and into 7th place after a 18 point night - almost doubled my score.
-
Ah, shut up. >:(
-
What the hell kind of score is this Jeff?
-
a bad one... >:(
-
Yeah, but why all the decmial places?
-
Woo hoo! I'm outta the cellar! First place, here I come. :P
-
My team seems to be struggling a bit out of the gate here (particularily the Goaltending).
Hopefully they can turn it around a bit and get things going as we start see some teams hit their stride...
ps.
Havlat - 7th Round Pick - 22.6 points through 6 games.
Here's to hoping he turns out to be my steal of the draft like Jagr was last year... ;D
-
It's pretty amazing to watch Havlat, especially since I have him in my other pool. I think that was a guy I was aiming for around that time too, only to have you take him. The only negative I see in our pool is if Chicago is as bad as they were last year, the +/- could be a hindrance. I had Bell and Calder last year in a league like this and they were just ok by the end of it due getting pounded every night.
Nice consistency by Jason's team right now :o Every night, good point totals and few guys with negative totals.
By the way Jesse, thanks for Bell ;D
-
Question Brent, I have Alexander Radulov on my team, but he has an NA next to his name. I took him in the last round knowing he probably wouldn't make the team out of the gate, but would get an early call up. Sure enough, he got the call today and should be in the lineup Saturday. Am I going to be able to set him on my roster, because right now I can't. I don't know if I he is just going to pop back on my roster, or if he's going to show as a free agent.
Bottom line is I drafted him, I want him ;D
-
Weird,
I went in and edited your roster, just to see what would happen and it let me put him in on Friday but then it dropped him back to the bench on Saturday ???
Check again tomorrow and let me know in here. If need be I think I can slot him in on Saturday, but can't do it until tomorrow.
BTW, I didn't move anyone around that was playing any games, so there shouldn't be an impact on your roster/scoring for tomorrow, but check anyway.
I think the glitch will be shortlived, because yahoo just ain't that hot on hockey. It's dumb you can't add G/A for goalies. Of course when your pitcher hits a home run in baseball, you don't get those stats either ::)
-
By the way Jesse, thanks for Bell ;D
Arrgh. I didn't realize he was going to be playing with Thornton and Cheechoo. >:(
-
Thanks, I'd like to think he is going to end up being the real steal of the draft. Forget that kid in Pittsburgh, A-Rad is is where it's really at!
-
Without opening up too much of a can of worms....
Jason posted this over at the JD hockey site:
I just gotta say that we screwed up the point system in regards to plus/minus. It shouldn't be weighted as heavily as a goal or an assist. It should be no more than a half a point, especially if PIMs are only weighted at .2. Had I been able to post on JD, I would have seen how the scoring was set up and spoke up sooner. I don't even lurk on there anymore so I really didn't see how Brent had set it up. If you can change it at this point, change it now. I'd hate to see a plus/minus cost someone the league.
I think it's a reasonable statement and to be completely honest, I agree with him, but didn't want to bring it up. The reason I didn't bring it up was because looking at my results early on, I was getting hammered by minus points so I thought it might be a bit self serving. Now that someone else has brought it up, I agree.
It's sufficiently early on that changing the stat shouldn't do too much to the standings (I think) so I'd like to open it up for discussion, acknowledging that yeah, once the season starts, etc. But I'm proposing dropping the +/- value to 0.5 points from one, not getting rid of it entirely. So it'll still have value in both directions, but as Jason points out, it is a bit strong in its weighting.
Needs to be majority vote, otherwise it's left until next year. Please provide feedback/opinions/vote.
-
I'd vote yes. So long as it retroactively updates all of the +/- stuff so far. I'm assuming it does this right?
I'd also like to see a scenario where we have 2 goalie spots - we could leave the games at 92 or whatever they are, but I keep having nights where I pick one of my two goalies, and then the other one plays and gets a win and the one I picked didn't even get in the game.
I think I've got exactly ONE win so far this season - even though my goalies have won a few more games than that (not that they've been great or anything).
-
I agree with changing the +/- value to 0.5, but kinda like the challenge of choosing which goalie will play that night.
-
Really? I freaking hate it.
I like the challenge of figuring out which one is more likely to win - but I absolutely hate picking one and then having him not play at all. Drives me nuts.
-
I think changing the value does so retroactively, but I'll have to check. I can't see why it wouldn't, so standings may shift a bit when I do (or not).
As for the goalie thing, can't change that this year anyway, so it's subject to discussion for next year. Were we to go back to two goalies, I wouldn't be keen on the larger game cap. If you'll recall last year we had guys with 4-5 goalies to cover off 82 games per, can you imagine if we had even more games to cover? :o I understand your frustration though, I've had it happen with Nabokov too. Too many platoons this year (sound like RB in football?).
-
I meant that we'd leave the games cap equal to what it is now, but with two slots - so it'd be two slots with 46 games per slot, just so you wouldn't get shafted if your guy doesn't play and your other guy does.
Just an idea.
-
I see. Only problem is I don't think I can set the game cap differently for goalies and the skaters. So it's either two slots with 92 games each or one with 92. Can't split it off as two slots with 46 :-\
-
I'm totally in favor of changing +/- to a half point too.
-
Oh well - it was a nice thought I think.
Looks like one more vote should do it for changing the +/- thing - Me, Jesse, Jamie, and Brent are all on board so far right?
-
I'll be fine if it gets changed (ie no temper-tantrums), but I don't really like the idea of changing stuff after the fact... :-\
-
I'll be fine if it gets changed (ie no temper-tantrums), but I don't really like the idea of changing stuff after the fact... :-\
I'd also vote against, we all agreed to the way it was before
-
I'm against it as well, for the said reason of not changing it after the fact.
-
Oh well - it was a nice thought I think.
Looks like one more vote should do it for changing the +/- thing - Me, Jesse, Jamie, and Brent are all on board so far right?
For:
Brent
Jesse
Jamie
Rob
Jason
Against:
Ryan
Scott
Jeff
Left to Vote:
Mikey
Looks like the ayes have it
-
Not that it matters, but I'm against for the same reasons as others have stated. However, they'll be no arguments from me.
-
It is done and appears not to function retroactively as the points didn't change at all, nor did the standings.
I have a suspicion it will amount to a relatively meaningless change. Point values will end up being higher, but you'll be penalized at the same relative rate should your player be on the minus side more often than not. I think all it's going to mean in the end is if you finish now with 900 points, you'd maybe have finished with 850 previously, but relative to anyone else it won't change.
-
Just checking what it should have done, Jeff is the biggest loser as he had the 3rd highest +/-
-
Great... :'(
With my sucking goalie and injuries to Gaborik, Havlat, and Kubina my team is looking pretty diseased at the moment. >:(
-
It is done and appears not to function retroactively as the points didn't change at all, nor did the standings.
I wonder if it will end up changing when the system resets for tomorrow.
-
I got a bizarre 0.699999999999 points according to the standings page, so I was looking a little closer at my team page and the numbers don't seem to jive. ???
The standings show I earned ~0.7 pts, but my team page says I earned 2.2 pts. Perhaps Yahoo has a glitch where someone gets a strange point total (like 0.69999999999) because it's not adding right?
0.40 + 1.40 - 0.50 + 0.40 - 1.50 + 2.00 = 2.20
Am I doing the math wrong or missing something?
-
Am I doing the math wrong or missing something?
You're not the only one... the scoring is all ****** up.
Yahoo only credited me with 1.3 points last night, but team page shows that I earned 7.8 points. >:(
-
Heh, at least you guys went up. Look at Jason and Jamie. Might have something to do with the resetting of the +/- to 0.5 from 1.0. Otherwise everyone's score is screwed up. I potted about 7 points or so last night so mine is whacked too. Let's see if Scott has anything to say ;)
And no, I haven't got a hot clue what happened or how to fix it :-\
-
Yeah, upon close examination, the +/- points change is what happened... just looks funny because they swapped out the points against last night's totals.
-
I have nothing but good things to say about the point change.
-
:D
I'm guessing. LOL. I think we're ok going forward, the league is still very tight from top to bottom so there shouldn't be too many issues. At least I hope not.
Now to wait and hear from Jamie and Jason :-X
-
I actually had 11 points from my guys last night...the points change didn't really do anything to me
-
Under the new scoring - my team last night scored 3.3 points.
I was credited 1.8 points - which is 1.5 less than my team earned. But I was +3 before, which used to be worth 3 points, and is now worth 1.5 - so they deducted the .5 points per +1 - meaning that it did work retroactively.
If your score didn't change at all, maybe you were +0 before?
-
- meaning that it did work retroactively.
Yes, this seems to be the case, a retroactive readjustment that messes the scores up for only a single day. So your vote then still counts. Interesting to note Jason had about the biggest impact negatively from his suggestion.
Now if I could only figure out why some days people get 0.69999999999999999999 points, all might be well.
BTW Jeff, I have Gaborik and Havlat in my other pool, so I share your pain (well, sort of, only one IR in that league so I dropped Gaborik already :-\)
-
Now to wait and hear from Jamie and Jason :-X
We were both for the change, so I'm pretty sure we aren't allowed to complain ;)
-
Ayup. And thanks. That went smoother than expected and I do think it was a change for the better. I know I factored in +/- into my drafting strategy but it remains a factor, just a smaller one.
-
That went smoother than expected
I can still pitch a fit if you'd like... after all I did lose FIVE AND A HALF FRICKIN' POINTS! >:( >:(!!
That's it, I'm never playing fantasy sports with you ******* again! (http://www.jedidefender.com/jsmentek/mad.gif)
was that OK? I can pitch a bigger fit if you'd like... :P
-
It was ok. Kind of like a fit a Canadian might throw. So really, sort of lame. :-*
-
Well, technically you are right - after all, being Minnesotan is about as close as you can get to Canadian without going over...
-
Yeah, you guys will be the second state we adopt after the US tumbles into economic ruin. North Dakota will be first, if only out of sympathy. Fargo. Eh.
-
I want Wisconsin. Mmmmm... Cheese.
-
Anyone who follows these guys more closely have any idea what's up with Zetterberg sucking it up (at least as far as fantasy hockey goes) so far this year? We're talking my 3rd round pick here.
I expected more than 5.6 points at this point for the guy.
-
It's a slump I'd say, nothing more. It's early, who knows what's in his head. I sure wouldn't be thinking about dumping him, as a guy already did in my office pool :o Thankfully I was number 2 on the waiver wire and have acquired him 8)
Maybe it's just your kiss of death Rob. Consider Zetterberg to be your personal Texas Ranger in the NHL :-X
-
I'd hate to ruin anyone's career through fantasy sports.
I should stop playing.
-
Man, my team sucks right now. >:(
I've got three quality guys on IR for 3-4 more weeks and two more guys who are not playing (or getting way less minutes than usual) due to minor injuries (groin, calf strains). :'(
Ah well, it's only the first month, still lots of time left before I get all worried and start dropping guys...
-
I'm nowhere near the boat you are Jeff, but at what point do they put a guy with a broken arm on IR? :-\ Tallinder's been gone for almost a week and still active? Yeah, sure.
-
Holy **** Zetterburg scored!
And even if the night doesn't end like this, his goal put me into 5th place.
Look out...
-
Ah well, it's only the first month, still lots of time left before I get all worried and start dropping guys...
Screw it, I'm 60+ points behind the leader now, time to start doing something. >:(
I'm really starting to worry that I used up all my Fantasy NHL luck last year... :'(
-
Man has Kipper sucked so far this year, he got off to a slow start last year too though, hopefully he can turn it around again
-
Ooh, 3rd place for me. I like. :)
-
Anyone interested in Elias?
He could be available if the offer is right.
I'm most interested in a goalie... but could also use another defender or a LW who isn't underperforming.
-
It's getting crowded at the top... at the moment there are 5 teams separated by about 6 points.
-
Yeah, it's a lot of fun to see so many battling for first.
-
Even if it doesn't last the night... it's good to be back on top.
-
A big 17 PIM night from Ryan Whitney. Atta boy 8)
Enjoying the league right now, 7 points from 1st to 6th and Jeff at the bottom is only a couple of strong weekends out of first place with tons of time to go. :)
-
Jeff at the bottom is only a couple of strong weekends out of first place with tons of time to go. :)
2 weeks ago, I was 67 points out of first...
1 week ago, I was 59.4 points out...
Today, I'm 50.6 points out... just wait until I get Havlat, Gabby, and Kubina back. 8)
Plus:
*Ovechkin - 6 goals in last 5 games (about frickin' time) :P
-
As long as I don't lose this thing to someone from frickin' Tennessee, I don't care what you do :P
-
As long as I don't lose this thing to someone from frickin' Tennessee, I don't care what you do :P
What if you lost from someone from Florida who currently resides in Texas.
That'd be worse right?
And to think I was dead last about 2 weeks ago.
-
Sort of. At least with you I can rationalize because as an American, you've finished lower than me in baseball. Twice.
With Jamie though I can't rationalize it that way. Besides, I'm not too worried at this point, long way to go.
-
Is it gonna piss you off even more when the Cup comes to TN at the end of the season? ;D
-
Cup? What the hell is that? :-X
-
How the hell did Ladislav Nagy ring up 22 penalty minutes?!
-
The hick is back in first!
-
Gimme a few days Brent, I'll fix this little situation.
-
>:(
I have had the worst luck with injuries this year... just when it looked like my team was turning it around, I come back from the Holiday weekend to see another 3-4 guys got hurt and added to IR and I'm now 100+ points out of first? :'(
-
The pain of fantasy. I had the same thing happen to me last year in basketball. At least you know once the injuries start in on the Predators, Jamie's team will fall like a stone.
-
I sure hope so... I was starting to build up a nice grip on 1st, and then all the sudden Jamie's team piles up points by the dozen...
-
It's interesting to see the standings change so quick with 4 guys vying for 3rd place. I can move from 3rd to 6th in a single day (and back again 8)). It'll be much more interesting when I break away from that pack and take 1st though. :P
-
At least you know once the injuries start in on the Predators, Jamie's team will fall like a stone.
Losing Vokoun and Arnott has been painful, but somehow my boys are still putting up points for me ;D
-
I wasn't talking about them. Hell, I'm happy their hurt since I have Mason on my roster and just snapped up Arnott to drop him on IR. Hoping for a speedy recovery for him.
BTW, you need to pm me about the Ovechkin and respond to my buddy about the McCabes, slacker >:(
-
My team's gone ice cold over the last week.
Disappointing.
-
If you notice a shortage of points from last night, it's a Yahoo-wide system glitch. Goalie points were added in but the skater points haven't been yet. Patience and it should resolve itself. Notable for those of you with Tampa Bay players :o
-
Martin Havlat. ;D
In the 2 games he's played since being activated from IR: 3G, 2A, +5
Oh, how I missed you those 19 games. :D
Now to just get Gabby back and I can complete my climb out of the cellar... 8)
-
Nice to get Sullivan back last night, and watch him promptly go out and net a (natural) hat trick! A-Rad really needs to start getting mentioned in the same breath as Malkin too, the kid is amazing. I'd say he's got the talent to be a 50 goal scorer in the near future.
-
Ah, nice to be back on top.
Even if it's only for a day. ;D
-
Ah, nice to be
back on top not in last place.
Even if it's only for a day. ;D
-
I need for Pearson or myself to be on top. I can lose a hockey pool to a guy from Minnesota, but not Tennessee or Texas. Ok, that's not really fair to Texas, considering how much hockey is down there and all, but it's still the principle of the thing. I just can't see kids in Dallas standing out in the street playing ball hockey. ::)
-
Does it make it more or less blasphemous that I'm originally from Florida?
-
More. Much, much more.
-
I'd be well in first if I had taken Crosby instead of Kipper...I thought I made a mistake that night and now I know I did. Damn it...oh well, been making up lots of ground in the past few weeks...[kfan]I'm Comin' I'm Comin'[/kfan]
-
If I'd start my players when they're playing, I'd be doing better >:(
-
I just can't see kids in Dallas standing out in the street playing ball hockey.
The ball would melt.
-
I'd be well in first if I had taken Crosby instead of Kipper...
And I thank you for that. :-*
-
And all is well in the world of fantasy hockey, if only for a day :-*
-
5 points separate the top 4 guys, not bad.
Unforunately, I'm not one of those 4 guys. ::)
-

Unforunately, I'm not one of those 4 guys. ::)
14 points now biotches!
-
Sooooooo not where I wanted to be at the all-star break. :-\
-
Me too. I'm sitting in 6th, which IIRC is roughly where I was last year. I was hoping for an improvement, but I'm already 50 pts out of 5th and 70 pts out of 1st.
-
I'm feeling decent about where I'm at. Third place, with plenty of games left to use - and I finally have some decent goaltending after suffering through miserably in that category early on.
If Jagr can just get himself right over the break I should be in good shape.
-
I'm feeling decent about where I'm at. Third place, with plenty of games left to use - and I finally have some decent goaltending after suffering through miserably in that category early on.
I'm ok with where I am, but I'm lacking in goaltending as I was for most of last year and seem to be this year. Lundquist has sucked for the most part, something like 17-15, or about net +4. Mason was a treat while Vokoun was out, but now they're playing flip-flop.
Need some healthy D men and the world's a rosy place.
At least at the all-star break all is right with this league :-*
-
Left a shutout on the bench tonight... :'(
But Zetterberg came through with 2 goals, an assist, a GWG, and a +3. :D
-
Ah, nice to be back on top not in last place.
Even if it's only for a day. ;D
Into 7th and looking to make a real run for that #6 spot. :)
Man, if only my team would have played like this all year long (10-15pts per night). The Gabby/Demitra duo is finally paying off and my team has managed (knock on wood) to stay healthy for a while. With only 20+ games left, I don't think my team has anywhere near enough left in the tank to get into that top #1-5 cluster (80 points is a lot of ground), but at this point I'd be happy with a middle of the pack finish after spending so much time in dead last this year. :-\
-
My guys certainly picked the wrong time to slump as a group :( :o It's been pretty surreal for the last two weeks.
-
Looks like hanging onto Zetterberg is paying huge dividends finally - he's now second on my team behind only Lecavelier with 93 points.
He's even ahead of Jagr and St. Louis now with a whopping 31 points in the last month.
Hooray.
-
Into 7th and looking to make a real run for that #6 spot. :)
6th. :)
Now my team just has to keep playing well so I stay out of the bottom three for good... :-X
Looks like hanging onto Zetterberg is paying huge dividends finally - he's now second on my team behind only Lecavelier with 93 points.
How's Zetterberg working out for you now Rob? :P
-
>:(
-
What got into Hejduk and Stastny? They've become my new Kozlov/Hossa...holy crap are they on a tear!
-
What got into Jokinen? 2 goals, 3 assists, 6 minutes in the box, and a GWG. 9.00 points.
24+ points tonight from my gang - back in the hunt for second place.
-
Damn , i'm 10 points behind Jeff. That just won't do. >:(
-
I'm trying to hang onto 2nd without Zetterberg... how much time is left in the season anyway?
As much as I want to win, I'll be cool with 2nd if I can finish there. It'll be my first silver trophy in the old trophy case if it comes to pass.
-
Man, I wish my team had been healthier this year... early injuries to Havlat and Gaborik took the wind out of my sails, along with Roloson and the Oilers sucking ass. :-\
At least I've still got a shot at fending off JV08 and holding onto the 6th spot so I can declare myself the best of the worst. :P
-
Who's gonna win this thing?
-
Looks like Jason is a lock for first and I seriously doubt anyone will catch me in 2nd place.
The only real question at this point is whether Brent or Scott takes home the bronze.
-
I think Scott might have locked it up last night with a shutout :-\ I was cruising with Lundquist into the third period, but he gave one up to blow that shutout for me :'(
Predicted finish:
1. Jason
2. Rob
3. Scott (unless I can pull off some bizarre miracle).
-
Predicted finish:
1. Jason
Who now? Is that HoloElvis or JayDouble, or is that the same person?
-
HoloElvis.
Who needs to be unbanned here ;) so I can ride him about all his complaining last year about the cap on the number of games. Scott and I have red print everywhere, but Jason has games in hand. What's the point in asking for more games if you're not making use of them? :P
-
Wait a second...this is a league with Bug, Rob, and Scott, and you 3 let HoloElvis win a championship?! Jesus Christ, maybe I overestimate my competition.
I'm very disappointed in you 3 in particular.
-
What can I say - the guy put together a very good team. Imagine how big his lead would be if he'd actually used all those points. I'm pretty happy with a second place finish though - I tied for third last year, so I'm headed in the right direction. 8)
For me getting my Lightning players in mid rounds is what did it - those two have been solid gold and there's no way I'll get them both next year like that... Too bad it wasn't quite enough. Better goaltending and a few defensemen, and a healthy Zetterberg might have been enough to pull it off. Then again, Jason could have just used more of his games if I started catching up.
-
I think I'm in 6th or 7th. Sad excuse of a Canadian. :'(
-
Must really be rough to see a guy raised in Florida but living in Texas so far ahead of you in the standings. :-X
-
Clearly it's the Texas influence and nothing to do with Florida. Texas has more semi-professional/professional hockey teams than all of Canada now, so it's been a positive influence.
I blame Bettman >:(
-
I blame Bettman >:(
That would make a great tattoo.
-
Congratulations to
1. Jason
2. Rob
3. Scott
for taking the trophies in this year's JD hockey pool. Well done guys. Comments for next year are welcome.
I'm a little bummed, I'm not used to Scott finishing ahead of me :-X That last shutout killed me.
-
Thanks.
I look forward to improving upon this runner-up finish next season.
I liked having the extra games, what are your thoughts on how that worked out?
-
I'm a little bummed, I'm not used to Scott finishing ahead of me :-X
You and everyone else.
