Title: ThePerennial's Customs *Upated August 23rd, '06! 1:1 scale mando armor progress*
Post by: ThePerennial on July 11, 2005, 07:12 PM
Whoo, I've been on Jedidefender's Customizing forums for a while without even posting some of my customs! Well, after much procrastination, here are some:

Nikto Jedi

Super-duper articulated Clonetrooper

Since everyone's done one, I figured I'd do one, except I have no dremel, so I shaved the Tank Gunner's pelvis into two pegs that would fit into the SA clonetrooper's pelvis pegholes. It was easy but took time. I really love the end result:

This is my late submission for Chewie's Smuggler Challenge: Balosar Spacer/Smuggler  Fenn Sleazebaggano. He's a relative of Elan Sleazebaggano, the low-life at the Outlnader club who tried to sell Obi-Wan some deathsticks. Incidentally, Fenn is Elan's Drug smuggler, among other odd jobs.

Cool customs, that Nikto Jedi looks much better than the hasbro version.
Ain't nothing wrong with a SSA Clonie!  ;)

Alrighty!  You've got some definite talent, what took you so long!   ;)

Nikto Jedi - This totally blows Hasbro's version out of the water... Kit Fisto body?

SA Clone - Wow, that looks out of this world!  Imagine if Hasbro made a Clone like that!

Fenn - Great job!  Coincidence, I guess... I made a member of that species too (haven't shown any pics yet) using that Luke head too!  Great job, and I really like the gun you used for him, and the Clone Pilot's body works well.  I might suggest painting his hair a bit to make him look a bit more different than that Luke.

I've just become a great fan of your work... hope to see more soon!

Wow, you guys guessed (Almost) all the right parts! I'm impressed!

I just love that upside-down luke head, I wanted to put it to use. Fenn was almost going to be a zabrak spacer, but I made a last-minute decision and I think it turned out great. You can't see it from the picture, but the neck is slightly our of proportion in that it's too long. I like it, though: It doesn't bother me when I look at it from a front view, but when I look at it from the back, he looks like a frigging giraffe!

You guesses on the Nikto Jedi were impressive! I did use the Saga Nikto Jedi's head and hands, AND I used the Kit Fisto Body, but what I really like about this is his legs. I would bever have thought to use them if I didn't wee them in my spare parts bin, but there they were: a Pair of Saga Lando in skiff guard disguise legs. The boots just go so well with the nikto! I don't know wbout you, but whenever I think "Nikto", I always remember that great battle scene on the skiff, and the boots just remind me of that; which is why I thought it so befitting for the nikto.

Cool, I thought the legs on the Nikto Jedi looked a little different than Kit Fisto's, but I couldn't place them.  Great idea, they fit the figure perfectly.

Yep, perfect choice of legs.  I had noticed that there seemed to be some sort of straps above the boots, but thought you had painted it.

lol, I'm still laughing at the second nikto picture. it looks like he's stabbinh himself. (easily entertained)
nikto rocks! haha

All very well done, I like that Clone Trooper the best too. and the sleeze bag is pretty cool. it's almost amazing how that pilot body works so well once it's repaintd.

I'm going to update tomorrow with more pics of My smuggler custom (I decided to paint him with glossy black over the white parts), a Bespin Luke Work In Progress, and pics of my masterpiece-- my JASTER MEREEL custom!

I love how he's turned out and I used a red that wasn't so profound as other jaster customs, in fact I tried to match the red that was on the boba fett's helmet (So it's a maroon, rather) so I only needed to paint the shoulderpads, and I think I did a pretty good job matching it. I think it goes better with the whole look and stays as true to the open seasons comic as I could get.

Well we're all looking forward to seeing what surprises you have in store for us.  You really like Mandalorians, right?  Have you ever considered making any fan-fic ones?  There just seem to be so many possibilities now for different types of imaginative creations with all of the different Clone Trooper parts that could be used.

I have a fanfic mandalorian in the works, but the changes aren't too extravagant. the only change is I'm using a djas phur belt instead of a boba fett belt. when I do customs I try to make them as believeable as un over-the-top as I can without being too boring. That way my customs seldom come out looking cheezy (or at least I hope so).

I want to do a montross real soon, too. I'm also in the works of doing a Ghez Hokan custom; the mandalorian from the republic commando novel.

These are big pictures, so I'm only going to post one and then link you to the rest of them. It's a custom of Jaster Mereel: Jango Fett's mentor and mandalorian bad@$$ extraordinaire. I hope you guys like it! (After taking the pics, I noticed that I missed a spot on his helmet, but corrected that right after. I feel that I got the colours right. The red isn't to profound; it's more of a maroon, but I'm still pleased with it. The dark brown jumpsuit is a good colour, but the flash on the samera makes it looks more glossy than it really is. It's a dull dark brown and not a glossy dark brown IRL.

I love it! :)

Excellent use of parts, The VOTC Fett is perfect for Mandalorians, and the Jango legs blend perfectly. I love the gun, that bayonet blade is awesome. I think some silver drybrushing on the gun could really help it, it would show off all the cools detail better, and help it's apperance. I'm not sure if the flash washed it out, but I think you could add a wee bit of weathering to Jaster too, maybe just ding up the red shoulders abiot, and add a few dings to the armor elsewhere, it really doesn't need much at all but I think a little bit will improve it. I agree with your choice of colors, they seem to be a perfect match from what I can tell, very nicely done. :)

I think I'll retouch on jaster when I'm a more experienced painter. I'm not the best at painting dings and scratches and what not, so I wouldn't know where to begin! Time to check FFURG I guess. also, I agree; Drybrushing  jaster's blaster rifle would make it look a lot better.

Cool! Thats pretty good stuff there. Makes me wish that I had nabbed mroe than one VOTC fett.
I really like the detailing on him and that Gun is really great? what did you use to make it?
Also, which part of open seasons did you use in reference for this? just a bit curious, because I think he had some kinda marking on his chest.

Holy ____!  That's awesome!  One of the best Mandalorians I've ever seen anyone make.

Good use of parts, and the blend together perfectly.  His armor looks like real metal; great paint job!  When you begin more dry brushing/paint damage, this guy will be a perfect 10.

This makes most of the ones I've made look like crap.

Thanks, Dimetrodon! My Reference was from the second issue, so I should have painted the yellow markings on him. I could do it later, but for now I'll leave it as is. In the first issue he didn't have the yellow markings, so it still is accurate in that sense. The gun was from a dollar store toy soldier and I cut various parts off of it. I also added the blade of a Lando skiff guard vibrostaff. The problem with jaster's rifle is that there's no continuity with it. In some pictures, it looks like a shotgun, in others it looks like an assault rifle, and in others, it looks like a smiper rifle, so I tried to capture jaster's blaster rifle as best I could using different references.

Thanks, chewie! For his armour, here was no mixing required for his paint believe it or not. I used Tamiya acrylic "Gunmetal", which was perfect for jaster's armor plating. Thanks for the compliment, they're always appreciated!

Nice Mandalorian!  I'm not too familiar with Jaster, but that's a great looking custom!  The paintjob looks really clean and the parts are great.  What legs did you use?

The gun looks pretty badass, although I agree that a little drybrushing will help bring out the details.  A little weathering would be cool too, but don't do too much because your paint job looks great as it is!  8)

FINALLY UPDATED!

I'll start with my "Self-customs" submission: Myself as a Retired mandalorian soldier-turned Journeyman protector.

Backstory: Dav'sa Arman was once a mandalorian soldier serving under Jaster Mereel's personal unit-- Headhunter company; which specialized in reconnaissance and covert operations and were characterized by their darker armour colourations. While under Jaster's command, Dav'sa served as a commander and was with the mandalorians well past Jaster's death.

He served under Jango until the unfortunate incident at Galidraan, where he, as did most of the mandalorians who didn't die, went his own way. Some went onto become bounty hunters, but Dav'sa had other things in mind.

He went to Concord Dawn to a village and became Journeyman protector up until the clone wars, when a mysterious man in familiar armour named Spar comes to him with a proposition...

Whoa, nice pics (could use some cropping though  :P).

Dav'sa Arman - Great work!  He looks plain (which I think is good) and like he's trying to lead a simpler life from what he had been used to as a Mandalore Merc.

Jeeb - As I already mentioned, I think that this is an excellent custom.  One of the best parts usage that I have ever seen.  Everything ties together perfectly.  I also like that you made a male Ubese Bounty Hunter.  I had been trying to figure out how to make that work, but never knew which parts to use.  Nice job!

Luke Bespin - Looking good so far!  I'll wait until you finish him though...

Jango Fett - Awesome!  Great idea!  I really can't wait to see how this turns out.  It looks like it will be the definitive Jango Fett  ;D  How are you going to fill in the gap in his waist?  Do you have to shave doen the torso peg?  :-\

Keep us posted!

 Thanks for the comments, Gregorbian!

For Jango, I plan to use a dremel (Well, first I plan to BUY a dremel) to dremel a hole in the pelvis shaped like the torso peg (which is kind of like a "D" shape), so it slides in nicely and so that I don't have to sacrifice waist articulation.

All I need for Luke is to paint his boots, maybe dry pruch him a bit, and get a VOTC han belt for him. if anyone can provide me with a VOTC han belt and blaster, I'd really, REALLY appreciate it!

Yeah, for Dav'sa, I wanted to go for the sort-of-generic look for him, yet keep the militaristic aspect of him, so he's got a uniform-looking shirt with shoulder armour and pads on, plus the green on his pants give that militaristic feel to it.

Wonderful update.

Dav'sa Arman -

I really like the use of parts here, it's perfect.  I commented some in the other thread on this one, but I really love the different pieces you used to assemble him.  Very realistic looking character.  Well done!

Jeeb -

What can I say to improve this custom?  Nothing!  It's awesome, and once heck of a cool idea.  Definitely one of the more interesting figures I've seen anyone make, and a wonderful variety of differnet parts that just look like they were made to go together!

Luke -

He already looks better than my attempt at this.  The legs look perfect, mine for some reason doesn't look like it should.  I am looking forward to the final product.

Jango -

Looks like you are going to create something that Hasbro has yet to give us, a well done Jango Fett.  Can't wait to see how this one finishes up.

awesome ubese bounty hunter great use of parts and paint scheme, i may have to try my hand at it.  i just finished a, i guess AU, version of bespin luke this looks really good definate improv to hasbro's.  what arms are those?  also  i have my luke with a VOTC han holster if you have a spare you should try it on him, it kind of looks like he's missing something.  and finally onto jango, off to a good start i can't wait to see what this will finally  look like i've been trying to think of a way to do this but have come up dry, this looks very very promising.

Great Update!

Dav'sa Arman - Simple but it is still a very good custom. I think a little drybrushing would help it.

Jeeb - I commented on this the other day in the CCC thread, but I feel the need to again. This thing blows me away every time I see it. The combination of parts is fan-*******-tastic. :) The Jedi parts don't even look Jedi and the Royal Guard boots were a great choice. I had no idea that was a Dooku skirt.

Luke Bespin - You are off to a good start. I think I'd give the pants another coat of the bases color. The neck look a little long to me, I'd shorten it as well.

Jango Fett  -

That pose is killer. If I can find an extra VOTC Fett or 2, you've inspired me to attempt this myself. :)

Thanks for the comments, guys! To reply to Ryan's comment about the WIP Luke, For some reason I kinda like the neck, even if it does look a little long. I have no idea why, but it kind of gives it that comic-book/animated feel to it while not being too cartoony, so my bespin luke is naturally not the most accurate (Especially the arms, no pockets on the bicep and the cuffs on the cleeves are lose instead of fitten to his wrists), but it does look good to me. That, and I'm too lazy to shave down the neck some.

(Oh, and the arms I used are from SAGA Captain Antilles, so is one of the hands, and the other hand is from the SAGA Lobot)

Lol. I've actually been customising for a long time, but haven;t really gotten into the complex parts swapping or just plain painting up until recently. Also, I've made a lot of customs that I haven't taken picture of cause they're horrible, but they've been good lesson-learner figures so to speak, making me conscious of what does and what doesn't work.

Oh, and I'll post a WIP Dav'sa Arman in mandalorian armour soon. :D

I know what you mean, I have a lot of stuff that I made several years back that I haven't shown... actually a lot of them have been disassembled and thrown into fodder piles for future customs.   ;)

hey all, Just upping my thread to let avaryone know I'll be updating soon with a new custom: Dav'sa Arman in Mandalorian armour. It's basically a repaint, but It's one of my favourite customs yet and I made a custom blaster rifle that I really like. I hope you guys enjoy when I post it!

UPDATE!

I finally found time to take pics of my self-custom Dav'sa Arman in mandalorian armour. I feel pretty satisfied with it, but I really think I should have painted his jumpsuit greyish-tan then given him a wash of black. Maybe I'll revise it later, but I'm actually quite satisfied with it as is.

I need to better my photography skills, cause you can't see the scratches and battle damage I pained on his armour. My favourite is a "paint scratch" scar going down the right side of his  helmet. I'll tale a pic of that later.

That looks really good. I would tone down the black weathering on his shins, though. It kind of stands out looking at it. I really like his gun and his waist belt/harness though. That's nice.

Thanks. I'll try to take better pics later. I made a nice mandalorian carbine/rifle for him that I think suits him more than this sniper rifle.

I could have sworn I already replied to this, because I know I already saw it...

Great use of parts, looks like an entirely unique figure.  I especially like the Djas Puhr holsters.

Something about the jumpsuit might look a little odd... I think maybe paint the whole thing flat black, then do a gray dry brush perhaps?

I'll try that. The flash actually makes the black coat look shiny, but it's dull. I was thinking of doing a grey base coat with a wash of black-brown mixture. how does that sound?

I love that Mando custom!  The paint scheme is simple (nice touch) and the weathering came out well.  The holsters are a great touch - I really have to pick up some Djas Puhrs just for those holsters!

Any updates on that Ultimate Jango you were working on?

okay, I promise to update either tomorrow or the day after to post new pics of my customs. I've got an update on my self-mandalorian, Dav'sa Arman. I also have a new mandalorian, Silas, as seen in the comic book "Jango Fett: Open seasons". Also, an update on the not-quite-finished ultimate jango fett.

(and hopefully I'll come up with some non-mandalorians soon. I just need more fodder)

UPDATE! A preview for the updated Dav'sa Arman mandalorian custom:

It's a preview because I'll take a better pic with natural sunlight tomorrow.

And the reason why I haven't updated in forever:

I'm working on a very ambitious project and hopefully, but not likely, I'll finish by hallowe'en this year.

I'll let the two photos speak for themselves:

That Mandalorian custom looks great, he looks like he's been through some hard times ;)  I like the color scheme.

That costume is gonna be sweet - are you going to be an EU Madalorian or one of the Fetts ... or is it a secret?  ;)

I'm making a boba fett. I've been doing reseach into the more cost-effective ways to make one without sacrificing quality. I was told that this brand of garbage cans is a good thickness for armour and if you tilt the chest armour strategically (as seen in my pictures), the curviture of the oval-shaped can wil contour to yourself without having to manipulate it more.

Thanks! For the blaster, I wanted it to have a boba fett feel to it, but not look like any of boba fett's blasters exactly, so it looks sort of like a cross between his rotj and esb ee-3 rifles. I like to call it the EE-2, something that could be seen predating the original trilogy and used in the clone wars era.

The costume looks like it's gonna be very cool too, good idea using a trash can to cut out the curved chest armor!

Great looking figures mate Dav'sa Arman looks all beat up and the silver and green comes together very well.

Silas looks good I like the jango style feel to him alot

The trandoshan is very well put togther I like the fact that you have'nt gone with to much armour especially for a slaver well done.

Under the helmet, my silas custom looks like a mangled, mutilated slave I pilot jango head. I plan in changing that soon into replacing it with a ball-jointed luke dagobah head with the hait painted black if I can find another one.

One of the arms from the elbow down is a VOTC fett and the other side is an ROTS pilot obi-wan, shaved down with a jango removable armor gauntlet slapped onto it.

I'll update this soon with a dav'sa arman in non-mando battle fatigues and an update on the boba fett body armor plates I posted a few pages back. I'm dremeling them out as we speak.

That's a great update to a custom figure already made.  I remember a while ago someone suggested a group project where we improve (or make a new version) of a custom that we originally created.  This is a great example of why that would be a fun project.

I also love the backdrop for the updated picture.  Whats the story with that piece?

Thanks for the comments, guys!

Unfortunately I don't have the funds to make any more progress on my Mandalorian armour, but I will eventually. Until then, It'll be a shelved, but I've decided to make it into a Jango costume instead of a Boba.

The parts list for The updated Dav'sa is as follows:

Upper arms: Preview clonetrooper
Lower arms: #41 clonetrooper
Torso, legs, pelvis, belt: Cloud Car Driver
Boots: ROTS Count Dooku
Head: Captain Typho

I also love the backdrop for the updated picture.  Whats the story with that piece?

It's a piece that came with a gundam figure I found in Chinatown. I really only bought it for the backdrop, and you can see why :D

If anyone wants to make casts of it, I'll be glad to lend it to anyone whose willing to do so, especially since there are slots and pegs on this gundam backdrop that allows for multiples of these to attahc to make biger backdrops.
Title: Re: ThePerennial's Customs *Upated August 23rd, '06! 1:1 scale mando armor progress*
Post by: ThePerennial on August 21, 2006, 06:32 PM
Hey guys! I've gotten a lot of requests about posgin progress pics on my scaled Mandalorian armor. Finally I got off my butt and took pictures! I'll be presenting this in a step-by-step painting instruction for those who want to do what I did.

Step 1: priming

Get your desired piece and clean it off with soapy water, let it dry. After dried, cover completely with grey Sandable Primer.

Once dried, get a piece of 600grit ultra fine sandpaper and sand the desired piece until smooth. the result should look as such:

Step 2: applying a base coat

Once desired piece is properly primed and sanded, wash again wth soapy water and let dry.

After dried, spray 30 cm away with silver spray paint. let dry, repeat until piece has a completely covered look

The spray paint, being as far away as it was, will have gone on specked and flaked. This is no problem as it is expected. Wash in warm soapy water and wetsand using the 600grit sandpaper lightly.

Rinse and let dry. the desired look will be scratched, which is perfect.

Step 3: further sanding

Wet your 600 grit sandpaper and sand until surface is incredibly smooth. wash in soapy water again and let dry.

The end result should look patchy and sort of like a car's paint job you'd see at the beginning of "pimp my ride"

Step 4: final coat

Get in within 3-5 inches of the desired piece of armour and use your silver spray paint to spray, doing so in a linear fashion, using long, sweeping strokes to cover all of the armor. Do not touch until completely dry (depending on what kind of spray paint you use, it will be from either an hour to a few hours to a day to a few days)

Result will not be very smooth, but do not sand, hand wash with soapy water, rinse, and let dry. This should smooth the armor out as much as possible, and the end result should look like this:

And, just for reference, here's every step altogether:

I must stress that this result is for spray painting and the result will depend on what spray paint you use. I used what I could find, which honestly is not the best looking, but gives a desired effect.

This paint job is a temporary one for me, however. I'm planning on using a wax-based metallic finish on my complete armour: Silver leaf colored Rub 'N' buff brand is what I really want to cover my armour with. it gives a more realistic finish than any spray paint could, but it is VERY, VERY difficult to find here in Canada. I am told they used to have it at michaels, but it has since been called back.

In the US, I believe you can find these in abundance at Hobby Lobby and if you want to look for it, search in the antiquing area and what you're looking for is called Rub 'n' Buff wax metallic finish and the colour you're looking for is Silver Leaf. Once i find this, I will work on my armour immediately and post the results.

EDIT: Here's a link to the product I'm speaking of

 http://www.amaco.com/jsps/grouphome1.jsp?catID=87&productId=437&GROUP_ID=9&CATEGORY_ID=87&TITLE_NAME=Rub (http://www.amaco.com/jsps/grouphome1.jsp?catID=87&productId=437&GROUP_ID=9&CATEGORY_ID=87&TITLE_NAME=Rub)

 Thanks for looking!
