In light of Hasbro Pulse initiating "The Vintage Conversation", it seems like a Vintage Collection wishlist might be in order.  Especially since Hasbro seems to be actively soliciting ideas.

Vintage Kenner / Netflix Documentary Series - The Toys That Made Us
« on: December 24, 2017, 12:30 AM »
Have Netflix?  Then you really need to check out their new series about toys, called The Toys That Made Us.  The first episode in the series covers a topic near and dear to us all:  STAR WARS!

The inaugural episode in the series chronicles how the toy license for Star Wars was initially shopped, and how a relatively small company like Kenner was able to negotiate the rights to produce Star Wars toys.  It features interviews with many former Kenner execs, some Kenner employees that went on to work for Hasbro, as well as some high profile collectors like Steve Sansweet and Gus Lopez.  It's some pretty good stuff to take in.  Especially how Kenner let extremely favorable rights to the license lapse in 1986, leading to a renegotiation that changed everything!  Check it out.

Watto's Junk Yard / Disney to Buy 21st Century Fox Assests
« on: December 14, 2017, 07:41 AM »
Check out this news:

Disney to Buy 21st Century Fox Assets for $52.4 Billion in Historic Hollywood Merger.

So what does this mean?  Well, 21st Century Fox owns the rights to some significant Marvel properties like the X-Men and that extended universe, as well as the Fantastic Four.  With Disney acquiring 21st Century Fox, they're now positioned to incorporate the X-Men and FF into the Disney/Marvel studios developed Marvel Cinematic Universe.  And I would definitely like to see how Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige will work towards incorporating those characters into the MCU at long last!

The Prequel Trilogy / Fake News in the time of the PT
« on: December 11, 2017, 01:00 PM »
As we're on the verge of the theatrical release of THE LAST JEDI, Thrillist has published a look back at one of the more notorious prequel spoiler sites:  Supershadow.  It's interesting to look back at JUST HOW WRONG Supershadow was at the time, to the point of that site being the work of a pathological liar or fantasist.  They were fake news before we REALLY knew what fake news was!

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy sat down for an interview on THE STAR WARS SHOW to discuss current projects and the future of the franchise.

When asked about Star Wars Rebels Kennedy hinted that "people are moving on to new things", which may line up with rumors that series EP Dave Filoni has been working on developing a new animated Star Wars tv series.

Kennedy also revealed that Lucasfilm "is looking at the next 10 years of Star Wars stories" and where the sequel trilogy characters like Rey, Finn, Poe and BB-8 might be beyond the events of Episode IX.  The interview covered a number of different story telling platforms, from virtual reality, to Star Wars in Disney theme parks and video games, and how the Star Wars story group is working to present it all in a cohesive fashion.

The very first lightsaber duel that we saw in film in 1977 was between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi.  At the time it was something we had simply never seen before, and it stunned audiences.  As the Star Wars saga has progressed, so too have the lightsaber duels.  Each has had a dynamic of it's own.  In TESB we saw a Jedi trainee taking on Darth Vader.  Vader toyed with Luke, and the duel built emotionally as Luke came to grasp how out of his depth he truly was.  In ROTJ we saw more of a duel of equals.  Luke is more mature and has different intentions, and is trying to appeal to the good that's still within Vader.  Neither is an exceptionally gifted duelist, but the emotional stakes seem to have been raised.

In TPM we finally saw the Jedi in their prime against a Sith with amazing physical capabilities.  That continued on into AOTC with a duel between masters of The Force.  And that continued through ROTS as we saw the duel that was the climax of the fall of the Jedi, and the rise of Darth Vader.

So why was the lightsaber duel of ANH the way it was?  There are plenty of practical reasons why.  And now this Uproxx article discusses some possible story driven reasons (based on material released AFTER Episode IV, mind you) why the A NEW HOPE duel may have transpired as it did.

TV-9D9 / Star Wars Rebels - Season 4

From the Official Site:

STAR WARS REBELS TO RETURN FOR FOURTH SEASON THIS FALL

STAR WARS REBELS // MARCH 3, 2017

THE HIT ANIMATED SERIES' FOURTH SEASON WILL PREMIERE LATER THIS YEAR ON DISNEY XD.
Despite the best efforts of the Grand Inquisitor, Darth Vader, and Grand Admiral Thrawn, the Ghost crew will be back.

Star Wars Rebels is set to return for a fourth season, Lucasfilm announced today, premiering later this year on Disney XD. Production is already underway. Marc Buhaj, senior vice president, programming and general manager, Disney XD said, “The team behind Star Wars Rebels delivers epic storytelling that has captivated fans of all ages across the globe. We’re excited to continue sharing the journey of these fan-favorite rebels with our audience in the fall.”

Star Wars Rebels, set between the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope, features a cast of new heroes and has included Star Wars icons like Darth Vader, Yoda, and Princess Leia, along with fan favorites such as Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. The show is currently in the midst of a thrilling third season, which has seen the introduction of the threatening villain Grand Admiral Thrawn, a direct connection to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with an appearance by Saw Gerrera, and the legendary Maul on a journey for his ultimate revenge. The gifted cast includes Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan, Vanessa Marshall as Hera, Steve Blum as Zeb, Tiya Sircar as Sabine, Taylor Gray as Ezra, Dee Bradley Baker as Captain Rex, David Oyelowo as Agent Kallus, Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera, Sam Witwer as Maul, Tom Baker as Bendu, and Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn. Fans can look forward to more details and an announcement about the exciting fourth season of Star Wars Rebels during Star Wars Celebration in Orlando this April!

So while the Empire probably isn’t too thrilled, we can’t wait for Season Four.

It's interesting to see that Tiya Sircar listed in the cast, but Sabine is missing from the image of the Ghost crew.  But I don't think we've seen the last of her.

Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide by Pablo Hidalgo

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:  The essential, comprehensive guide to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story™.
This exciting reference format accompanies the eagerly anticipated, first-ever standalone Star Wars™ movie: Rogue One. This beautifully detailed title features in-depth character profiles, plus 5 newly commissioned and fully annotated cross-sections of vehicles and mapped-out locations. With clear and authoritative text, this book is packed with essential information—and presented alongside stunning stills from the movie.

My copy was waiting for me at home last night.  I pre-ordered it from Amazon, and they delivered on the release date, true to their word!

This book is interesting because it's a little bit of a departure from previous DK reference books.  They seem to have folded multiple reference books into one single volume.  Whereas we used to get a Visual Dictionary plus an Incredible Cross-Sections book, and perhaps a locations book, this is a single book that appears to cover most of those bases.

I think this book provided some excellent background material on the organization of the Rebel Alliance.  That in itself made this a great read.
