Title: Target 2023 TVC Boba Fett Repaints - Kenner, Marvel, Dark Horse
Post by: Jeff on November 8, 2022, 11:16 PM
*sigh* Another Boba Fett at an unfair MSRP.  #bobafetttax

Morak Boba Fett with some new parts for $20.99 was harsh, but another repaint of this Fett sculpt for $21 is just dicking collectors over because you can.

2021 VC186 Fett (ROTJ) = $12.99
2022 VC186 Fett repaint in Droids colors= $15.99 @ Target
2023 VC186 Fett repaint in Kenner colors = $20.99 @ Target ?!?

Do better Hasbro and Target.  >:( [/end rant.]

Available for pre-order Wednesday,  11/9 at 1pm ET exclusively at Target. UPDATE: 11/16 at 1pm ET exclusively at Target.

It does look really nice... but $21 for yet another repaint of this sculpt?   ::)

For the first time in 27 years of collecting, I am starting to truly loathe what Hasbro is doing with the hobby.

This might be where I get off this train.  This is a simplified version of the 2021 figure - simpler paint apps and no soft goods cloak.  That 2021 figure was $13.99.  How the **** does Hasbro justify selling this for $21?!?!?  A 50% price increase?!?!?!  This sort of **** is turning people off.

One has to wonder if they are doing this on purpose regarding TVC.

I doubt it.  More likely, TVC collecting has shrunk but the people still doing it are generally die hards or people who are new and barely remember $7 figures, and they all think this is normal.  So Hasbro I’d finding they sell nearly the same number if a figure at $21 as they did at $13 and they’re taking advantage.  If sales do drop enough, they’ll do some small price cut and we’ll all be happy about it even though it’s an increase over a year or three prior.

I was thinking that this had already been done before... I guess I'm thinking of the VCP03 mail-away one from 2010, which was 5PoA.  Some differences, but I think I'm satisfied with the previous one.

The only correction I’m interested in with this figure is a price correction.  It’s not worth more than any other figure in the line.  If it’s not $16.99 Hasbro and Target can choke on these.  Repeal the Boba Fett tax!!!
Title: Re: Target 2023 TVC Boba Fett Repaints - Kenner, Marvel, Dark Horse

$16.99 is already absurd.  They went from $13 to $14 then immediately to $15 with web exclusives at $17 to everything is $17 to $21 all in the course of like a year.

Oooffff. This is not good. The blatant price gouging of the Fett tax is ridiculous (especially apparent with so many Fett-themed items being released, and then re-released, over the last few years). If this was just a regular figure in the line at the standard price, fine. I wouldn't have been overly excited since it is just a gimmick-repaint but it is cool enough looking.

But releasing it as an exclusive with a price tag $8.00 more expensive than the version that came out two years ago? Get out of town. [Keeping politics out of this next bit] With inflation up everywhere globally, people are already worried about money and starting to change how they spend, especially with discretionary spending. I wonder how many collectors will start considering ditching the hobby if Hasbro keeps being this blatant with the Fett-Tax and the number of repaints, repack, and kitbashes in the current line. I feel like I've seen a few more of the more "prominent" collectors on social media starting to hint they are getting fed up or losing interest. I can't imagine the TVC line will survive another 1-2 years if Hasbro continues managing it like this.

This looks really nice, but I've got enough Fett figures like this already and the price is rough, so I'm skipping this one.

I think this is what I was alluding to on another post.  That maybe Hasbro is intentionally using this (inflation, Fett tax, etc) to kill interest in TVC and try to shift everyone over to the 6" line.  I feel like Star Wars (at least in relation to Hasbro and TVC) has become the Jango Fett and his clone spawn line.

That's it.  About 80% of it is a troop or a Mandalorian.  No imagination whatsoever.  I feel like the Finish-the-96 is going to be the end of TVC and Sim Aloo will be the last figure in that line.

Whether they bother with a different 3.75" line is another question.

Nah. You're wayyyyy off. Sim Aloo will be a surprise reveal next year. He's just a new head and a soft goods robe on any old body they want.
The last 96er figure will be Hammerhead. He's too much new tooling.

Don't forget the Kenner colors Hammerhead & Greedo repaints. Maybe a new Obi-Wan in regular colors first, and then a Kenner-colored rerelease.

I really hope that the way the community is reacting to this crap offering is a sign to Hasbro that collectors have had enough of this ****.  It's enough.  This feels like the 'Jump The Shark' moment for TVC, because so many people see this offering for exactly what it is - playing on nostalgia to make money, and little else.

The devil's advocate in me wants to point out...

Isn't playing on nostalgia to make money the whole reason they switched back from being "3.75" Black Series figures" to TVC part II in 2018?

And not for nothing, but the general consensus seems to be that this is a figure in a colorway that has been asked for for a long time.

The big contention is the price point...but that ship sailed with the even-more-expensive BOBF Tatooine Fett a year ago.

To quote Jesse Pinkman, "The price is the price, yo."
Title: Re: Target 2023 TVC Boba Fett Repaints - Kenner, Marvel, Dark Horse
Post by: Nicklab on November 12, 2022, 09:09 AM
Agreed that nostalgia is a huge part of what drives TVC.  I just think the Kenner deco on a modern figure is overplaying that.  But then Hasbro has gone there multiple times in The Black Series, and a bizarre motivating factor among TVC collectors seems to be "The Black Series got that, why couldn't we????"  And I definitely remember people losing their minds over the convention exclusive Kenner deco 6" Boba Fett.

I feel like the Retro Collection Fett and the rocket firing mailaway were enough in the 3.75" scale.  For others, maybe not.

Hasbro tried pitching the higher price on Boba Fett with that deluxe Tatooine version.  They said that the number of paint apps on Boba Fett were far more intricate than on other figures.  Still, a lot of people got vocal about it then.  The progression through the Boba Fett figures ever since 2021 has seen prices ramping up and there has been no clear rationale for those increases or an increase in perceived value.  The price may be the price, but collectors can take a stand and tell Hasbro to piss off.  Because reissuing a 2 year old sculpt with simpler paint for 50 - 60% more than the original release seems like a complete dick move, and it's targeted on a specific character.

And Rob, I agree - the $16.99 price is not ideal.  I put that out there because if the rest of the line was moving to a $16.99 price point, then there's no reason why this figure should be priced higher.

The price may be the price, but collectors can take a stand and tell Hasbro to piss off.

Well yeah, but the meth addicts could tell Heisenberg that too, but we know that's not gonna happen.

I definitely am seeing both sides of this, I am not saying you're wrong at all. Collectors want this figure, and they definitely have a fear of drawing a line about the price because they don't want to kill the line by not buying it. It's a tough spot.

I plan to get the Retro Deco TVC Fett, because I love that figure sculpt, love that colorway, and have very real nostalgia for how that first Kenner Fett got into my 5 year old hands at the time. But I am not going to preorder it next week because of the price issue, just like I didn't preorder either of the '22 Fetts. I wound up getting a Morak Fett eventually.

I will get the new version eventually, playing the long game of collecting as I have in the past with the idea that eventually this stuff loses value and the things that do increase in value are balanced out by the rest that doesn't. And if this never price-corrects and becomes unattainable, then I probably won't get one, which I have to be okay with because I am not comfortable giving the retail price a pass. (I just bought ROTS Mon Mothma last week for the same price it was 20 years ago when I skipped it, because her Andor appearances have finally made the character "worthy" enough for me to pick up.)

That’s an interesting idea, and the opposite of how I’ve always approached it.  To me, it’s always been get them now or on average pay more later.  With TVC lately I think you could get away with it if you don’t wait too long.  There have definitely been lots of figures available between $7 and $10 over the last few months.  I’m assuming it’s because of the price increases and lackluster figure selection, but I have no idea.  Once they’re gone though, prices seem to jump pretty quick.

With some lines this would backfire really hard.  I’m saying this as someone who collected Clone Wars from scratch 4 or 5 years ago.  It was really really difficult and would have been basically impossible without some very generous help from Jeff.

Well, for instance the Wooof figure I missed out on back in 2010 when figures stopped showing up at retail with that ROTJ wave. I wasn't actively collecting then, and seeing it for $30+ at shops when I wanted it had me feeling like I was just going to not have that one.

And now I will for "only" $14.99 (Thanks, Adam Pawlus and EE!) I will grab the Weequay when he pops up for the same reason.

I collect loose so picking them up is cheaper in that regard, and honestly there are only about 10-20 figures left on my want list that would bring me to plunk down any serious cash for them. One is that Dagobah Landing Luke...I know I will probably have to really invest the cash into that one someday, but now I can justify it in my head because the Weequay, Wooof, and Nikto came back cheaper.

So Boba I'll gamble on. $21 at release is just too dang much.

The price sucks, full stop.

I'm not a fan of the deco either...I have no use for novelty repaints, and only collect figures that could inhabit the same scene together (which is why I never collect animated-style figures). But at least this is something that will appeal to collectors in a meaningful and nostalgic way, and not like a "Santa Boba" or a "Halloween Chewbacca." That **** makes me nauseous. So, not for me, but I guess I'm happy for whoever wants something like this.

I forgot all about this today... oh well at $22.99 I'm not particularly upset.

Denver also has Axe Woves and Morak Fett starting to show up in numbers, but only at select stores. I feel like the Target exclusives have been hit or miss on the pegs. Migs & R2 (Droids) were both pretty easy to find around here, Morak Fett & Axe are starting to look like they might be easier to find, and then Fett (Droids) & Koska Reeves were non-existent in Denver.

I'll be patient with this one and wait to see if it shows up and if it looks decent. At that price, I may even wait it out to see if it drops as Migs did...

I continue to wonder if this is the result of how ecstatic collectors were about the VC186 Boba Fett? I know that I bought multiples of that figure because it was so good.  And I also have to wonder if the chestplate error on that original release of this sculpt was truly an error, or a test to gauge the market? Because I can still recall many of the back and forth discussions about the error and the correct version of VC186. All told I might have bought 6 or 8 of that figure in total.

The numerous repaints of that figure have me thinking that the Hasbro Star Wars marketing team is taking advantage of the enthusiasm of collectors with these continued repaints. The list is growing:

VC186 (error)
VC186 (correct)
Droids repaint
Kenner repaint
Marvel repaint 1
Marvel repaint 2

So when are they repainting it in the Prototype color scheme?  Or the all black version?  At this point I don't know who is more cynical about this crap - Hasbro for doing it, or us for waiting for the next insulting release?

I think it's more that Hasbro noticed that people were buying 5 POA figures for $18 each from Super 7 and wanted in on that.  I blame Brian Flynn for unleashing this beast on the world, no joke.  I quit collecting when those pieces of junk went from $15 to $18 before the pandemic and before inflation set in, but this is what they were treating people to before.

I do like the look of these, but I hate the concept and the very transparent money-making gimmick behind the marketing. I am going to pass on these pre-orders, just like the newest clone repaint. I'll likely only grab these if they end up on clearance in the future.

I think the thing that makes the last few of these especially annoying is that unlike other older exclusive gimmick releases, such as the Carbonized variants, these Fetts & his ilk all exist in the mainline TVC numbering scheme. I couldn't imagine being a full completionist these days, but it was at least somewhat possible to be a completionist with the main TVC numbered cards without needing to buy all of the super gimmicky figures. Clearly, that won't be true going forward.

So what time is this preorder?  I missed the last one…

Supposed to be 1pm ET on 12/14, but we all know how well Target does at actually hitting that mark.

I was swamped at work today and missed this announcement, but I think you guys covered it.  These $23 Fett repaints are just taking advantage of the carded collector guys and completeists.

I'll be passing on both of these comic-deco Fetts.  I just can't do this anymore. $23 for repaints is over the top in so many ways.  I'd rather take my $46 and buy another Shoretrooper 4-pack or something.

Meh...I have no interest in these, or really anything that doesn't look like it belongs in a scene with the rest of the figures.

I've got a theory about the insane pricing on these alternate deco Boba Fett's.  Could this be Target attempting to recoup the cost of the absolutely DISMAL sales performance of the Black Series Carbonized figures they got?  It wasn't uncommon to see pictures on social media of entire endcaps of those Carbonized Shoretroopers just sitting there.  Target must have taken a beating on those!  So are they turning it around on TVC collectors now?

I collect loose so picking them up is cheaper in that regard, and honestly there are only about 10-20 figures left on my want list that would bring me to plunk down any serious cash for them. One is that Dagobah Landing Luke...I know I will probably have to really invest the cash into that one someday, but now I can justify it in my head because the Weequay, Wooof, and Nikto came back cheaper.

Circling back to my Dagobah Landing Luke woes, he has shown up in Tunghori's inventory now at a regular ish price so I have one on the way. As always I had to make it worth the shipping by building up a worthwhile order, but there was enough there (including Wooof now too) so it was easy enough.

One more down thanks to playing the long game.

Huh... I just went to see what Luke you were talking about and I never thought of that as being a Dagobah Luke.  Mine has been with the Snowspeeder pilots all this time.  Going to move him now.

Not trying to pick up a second?

Kenner Fetts have arrived... en masse (in the Denver area). I originally skipped the preorder on this and was planning on just skipping him altogether. The Fett tax was high for a gimmicky repaint. But then I saw him in person last week and the paint apps looked nice and he looked really good carded. I caved and bought two.

At first last week, one Target near me only had a few that had just come out of the case. But within the last week and a half all the Targets near me are drowning in 6-10 Fetts each. It feels like there may be some clearances in this guy's future... Which would be alright. I feel like he makes a good generic Children of the Watch stand-in and would maybe pick up a few if the price dropped enough (below $10).

Same.  Also, no sign of him in the couple of Targets I occasionally stop in at.

I actually found the Vintage Comic Art one at Target today.  The regular Comic Art one they shipped me.

Just need Kenner Deco now to have these taken care of, no word on when they’ll fill preorders.

Looks like Target is finally fulfilling pre-orders for the Kenner Deco Fett.  I should get mine around August 23rd.

If anyone wants to use this to get a $7 refund on their Kenner Fett order... it just worked for me:

Target needs to get their **** together. I mised out on the preorders.

- bitch #1 -- their roll out was off. Wrong time, etc.
- bitch #2 -- over the next few months i managed to find it available on Target.com and get it in my virtual cart twice. Both times it was sold out before I could pay for it. No ******* grace period. Poof. Anyone could grab it from your "cart" at anytime.

I found  it on eBay today from a guy whom I bought from before. It looks like he buys decent quantities of clearanced merchandise from companies/distributors and resells them for much less than retail. At one time he had 47 or 48 of Kenner Colors Fett. I bought his last one... for less than Target's sale price!

- bitch  #3 -- WTF? Assuming he got these stateside, how did he have them and for less than Target and Target is still shipping out?

I totally get Star Wars toys make only a small portion of Target's gross sales. But TVC is only an ounce of what I buy at Target. Groceries, socks, cleaning supplies, toys for kids, books, stationaries, home wares, kitchen supplies. Target is very convenient and I'm not threatening boycott. When purchasing products becomes unreliable, the store gets a reputation and people will look elsewhere.

<end rant>

Just found the most recent two of these marked down to $12.49 and $17.49.  I’ll be returning these on my old receipts and won’t be feeling bad about it one bit.
