Title: The Great 2005 Collector's Challenge
Post by: jokabofe on January 2, 2005, 06:33 PM
OK, so it's a new year, and time for a new list. And it looks like I didn't waste any time taking the "lead", if you will. If you're wondering exactly what this is, take a look here (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=3353.msg40368#msg40368) for last year's thread, which explains the rules and regulations. The only different thing I was thinking about doing for this year was just making it Star Wars related. Anything and everything Star Wars. Of course, I don't really collect too much else, but if anybody wants to add other stuff as well, feel free.

JANUARY 2005

Most of this stuff is old, and could have been picked up last year, but I was so busy working all kinds of crazy hours for Christmas, I had to wait till today to stop by the comic shop and get it all.

Star Wars items:
Luke X-Wing Gentle Giant Mini-Bust $45
Gamorrean Guard Gentle Giant Mini-Bust $45
Clone Wars Red Arc Trooper Maquette $80
Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi Maquette $80
Kotobukiya Boba Fett $100
Kotobukiya Anakin Skywalker $100
Kotobukiya Mace Windu/Yoda $95
Kotobukiya Han Solo $100
Kotobukiya Darth Maul $100
Master Replicas Mini Saber Darth Vader $40
Master Replicas Mini Saber Count Dooku $40
Master Replicas Mini Saber Darth Maul $40
Master Replicas Mini Saber Sith Collection Case $15
Star Wars Sandcrawler $60
Dark Horse SW:Obsession 1 & 2, SW:Empire 25, 26, 27, & 28. SW:Tales 21, SW:Republic 70, 71, & 72 $33
10 VOTC figures (R2, Chewie, Lando, Boba, Stormtroopers x6): $100
4 OTC figures (Lando General, General Madine, Han AT-ST x2): $20
SW Trilogy Gold Ingot poster: $17
Galactic Heroes and Post OTC Cantina Wave @ BBTS: $93.88
Entertainment Earth Exclusive Clone Troops sets: $335.99
12" AT-ST Driver/VOTC Chewie, R2, 3P0/POTC Pablo Jill @ TRU: $60.37
Star Wars Magnet set @ Action-HQ: $102.35
Kubricks series 3: $49
Yoda:Dark Rendezvous @ Barnes & Noble: $7.95
Post OTC Cantina figures (2x each): $52 including shipping
SWS.com exclusive Chrome Stormtrooper bust: $56.94
SWS.com exclusive 2004 Comic-con Hyperspace shirt: $21.94
Action Figure Express exclusive holo sith lords bust ups: $17.94
Loose figures from SiteC here @ JD.com: $31.85
Ep3 preview Grevious/Wookie/R4 & Season 3 Animated Anakin/Grevious @ Wal*Mart: $30.47
12" Luke/Wicket/Jawa & Saga Imperial Officer from RogueJEdiTJ here at JD.com: $36
Shipping for a trade with CorranHorn here @ JD.com: $3.85
Shipping on a few other trades from RS: $15.40

Star Wars Total: $2053.93 :o

Non-Star Wars items:
AVP Captured Alien Queen bust: $80
Army of Darkness mini figures: $75
various comic books: $160 (3 months worth)

Non Star Wars total: $315

Grand total: $2338.933

After last year's major underestimate on the total I would spend, I'm not even going to make an attempt at guessing for this year, with Episode 3 launch and C3 coming up, I expect it to be more than last year  :o

edit: okay, so I've decided to just keep track of everything I buy that can fit in the "collectibles" category, even though my spending is 95% Star Wars, I do buy other stuff on occasion. I won't be putting DVD's in there tho, even if I buy "Collector's sets" of DVD's.

And this month's total is somewhat of an anomaly, since I'm catching up on almost 3 months worth of stuff, and had some extra holiday cash to spend. I don't think I'll be spending this much each month of the new year (or at least I hope I don't  :-\ )

I can't wait till this month ends already  ::)

I'll play Dave, I didn't get in on last year's since I didn't know about the thread until halfway through, but I'll give a go at it since I picked up a SW item today. Do we need to make estimates or anything or is that not part of the gig?

1/2/05:

POTF Warok Coin: $3

Total: $3

I got myself caught up on the 2005 Post-OTC figs last week, so just a bit short on that. I don't suspect my tally to increase until the ROTS Preview Wave comes out, but I shall return....

You can make an estimate if you want, Jason - but I found out the hard way last year that it's not always the wise thing to do. I underestimated my spending by about $3000 last year. And it hurt me to actually see how much money I wasted spent on this stuff last year. A real eye opener, to be sure. And this year promises to be more of the same, if not worse.

based on ROTS and C3 spending, I don't think I could make a good estimate. just seeing how much i will have spent this time next year could be painful enough for me. you're off to a good start though :P

you're off to a good start though :P

Yeah, I know  :-\

But most of that stuff was technically from last year, I just didn't have a chance to get out to pick it up until today. I was working so much from the day after Thanksgiving, on till this weekend, I couldn't get down to the shop.

Am I the only one expecting a cheaper year?  Yeah, it's C3 and a movie year, but really, the amount of figures should be about the same, if not actually less.  2004 had VOTC, OTC and some new stuff plus newly packaged ships and the Sandcrawler.

I'm done catchup on a bunch of stuff - busts, lego, vintage - for the most part anyway, so I think I'll be spending a fair bit less.

Put another way, I sure as damn well better spend less. >:(

Am I the only one expecting a cheaper year?

I think so Brent, based on what everybody is feeling. With the new movie being released - and a good amount of figures to be released, based on it, not to mention other assorted marketing products - as well as Celebration 3 happening this summer, I would anticipate spending more money this year than I did last year, if that's at all possible. I don't think I'll be adding the expenditures from the actual trip to C3 to my total (i.e. room, food, transportation) but anything that I buy there will be added to the total.

I think based on the Hasbro line we'll probably overall see more, we're expecting what 24 new figures just for the release of ROTS in late april early may? at $7 a pop that's a lot right there, add in the preview wave and vehicles, plus what will come later in the year and Hasbro will probably have a lot in store for us (though not all of it necessarily good :P).
Title: Re: The Great 2005 Collector's Challenge
Post by: Vator on January 3, 2005, 12:25 AM
I'm just doing that as a comparison to Celebration II...and the fact that the trip up there does happen to have a good deal of collecting envolved. For me atleast.

2004 was fairly cheap for me, as I passed on most of the OTC and VOTC, and yet, it still came out to be a pretty penny.
Title: Re: The Great 2005 Collector's Challenge
Post by: Morgbug on January 3, 2005, 12:27 AM
Yeah, I suppose, but the figures don't probably add up to that much.  I guess it's the other items associated with the movie I'm not accounting for.  The only things I can think of that come to mind are Master Replica items (I only want the F/X sabers at the moment, so that will be relatively cheap, so to speak) or Gentle Giant items.

I'm "hoping" to stay away from a lot of the more marginal stuff, but I'm sure I'll eat those words in due time ::)

I'm going to try and keep it below $4000 this year, roughly a 50% reduction.  I've eliminated a lot of peripheral lines during the past year, so it should help a bit.  Minimal McFarlane stuff will go a long way to helping.  If I do Marvel Legens by the case it should help a bit too.  And no more ******* boxes of Kubrick's >:(

Not planning on including the basic C3 expenses either.

Still cheaper than retail in Canada.  TRU sells them at $9.99 a pop already, Walmart at $8.92 which tallies over $10 after taxes.  Granted, we may see similar increases that relate to US prices, but you guys still have it cheaper.  We should get the first round of stuff, but the new material will peter out by mid-August for sure. :-\  At least up here.
Title: Re: The Great 2005 Collector's Challenge
Post by: CorranHorn on January 3, 2005, 12:31 AM
ahh ok, see i focus primarily on the Hasbro line so I tend to look at spending from that somewhat narrow pov. i'll probably be picking up some vintage kenner stuff throughout the year, including at C3, so that will add to the overall cost. but I guess I shouldn't be spending way too much, we'll see on 12/31/05.

Here's an interesting question to pose: C3 expenditures like hotel and food shouldn't count, but what about passes to the event? And since it's a movie year, do we dare add ROTS tickets? That would probably be insane, for some of us it may count towards half our costs  ;D

Well, apon reconsidering I've removed board as it is not collecting related.

Can we keep other things we collect as did last year?
Title: Re: The Great 2005 Collector's Challenge
Post by: jokabofe on January 3, 2005, 12:37 AM
You can keep track of whatever you want to keep track of. There's no real set rules as far as that goes. But I would say for the "purists" it would consist of Star Wars collectibles, and only Star Wars. That's not to say you can't add other figures or items you buy, or whatever else you want to add. Up to you.

Oh goodie, another year of collecting.  :-X   ;D

I'll be adding my other collectibles in again this year. I'm not adding the basic C3 ethier, hotel, airfare.

And no more ******* boxes of Kubrick's >:(

Yeah right!  ::)   :P   :-*

I am hoping to stick to my $100 a month budget again this year, but I may have to end up selling some stuff to stick to that budget thanks to Celebration 3 and RotS pile-up of goods...

Maybe I'll have the will-power this year to wait for the Clearance sales at Target TRU...  I couldn't wait during Ep1 or Ep2, but having seen both of those, maybe THIS year I'll do better and pick up some stuff cheaper?   :-\

Maybe I'll have the will-power this year to wait for the Clearance sales at Target TRU...  I couldn't wait during Ep1 or Ep2, but having seen both of those, maybe THIS year I'll do better and pick up some stuff cheaper?   :-\

My plan as well, clearance or guys just selling off loose stuff, since I open 99% of my stuff anyway, why pay full retail?  It's just army builders that are really tempting.  Man, I wish I'd only spend $100 a month.

After the glut that was Episode 1 I learned the lesson of waiting for clearance in a movie year. For Episode 2 I bought 3 figures (Nikto Jedi, Arena Padme, & Jango Fett) and waited until August when K-Mart had dropped the prices to $3 to pick up the rest of the line at that point in time. Worked out nicely cause K-Mart had their own special case of the first 16 or so figures so I just had to grab the box and go. I plan to do the same thing again with Episode 3, at this time I expect to be grabbing an Anakin, Vader, and Clonetrooper. Then wait to later to nab the rest. Should help to balance monthly costs a bit.

Well, consider me in.  Since I'm still finishing 2004's goodies, they'll end up in here too before I get to ROTS stuff.  I know it's going to be a pricey year (but a hell of a lot of fun  :)), so I'm not sure that I can even guess on how much I might spend.  Too scared to...

Date         Item                          Cost       Taxes       Shipping     Duty      Total
3-Jan-05  OTC Bib Fortuna         $8.98      $1.26                                      $10.24
                OTC General Madine  $9.99      $1.40                                      $11.39
                OTC Lando General    $9.99      $1.40                                      $11.39
                                                                                                                $33.02

I give you guys credit for even trying to wait for clearance sales.  I know that I don't have the willpower for it, so I'll bite the bullet and buy things as soon as I see them.  It seems like there's rarely enough figures around this barren province to even make it to clearance. :-[

And you know what, I'm  gonna do it your way, because I'll probably forget to add it when they finally get around to shipping them out.

This whole thing is getting WAAAAY out of hand already. We're only 4 days into the new year and I've spent close to over $2000 already  :o - $2065.59 (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=6073.msg95402#msg95402)  :-\

That's almost half what I spent all last year, and we're only 4 days into the new year... ugh, I gotta go lie down for a minute. My head is spinning.

I'm participating again this year as well. I also started a similar thread at RS to get those guys involved in this effort.

I have to run home tonight and check out how much I spent last year, but I KNOW it was more than I estimated. I'm hoping to spend less than that this year, because I really should be saving my money for more important things (like getting married).

However....only time will tell.

My 2005 estimate:  3500.00

Guess it's time for me to get one going for this year. With Star Wars being the sole line I'll probably collect this year, I don't know that I'll eclipse last years total by much, if at all. So a conservative estimate will be $4000 for the year. Certainly no more than $5000, I hope.  :-\

January
1. Darth Vader Unleashed and cheap Target Leia collector cup - $18.61

Blue Snag from Ebay - $97 US shipped  :o
Gretzky Legends fig Walmart - $11.50 CAN

2 R1-G4 figs Ebay - $21.50 US shipped

I can see now that this is going to be a little scary.  In my efforts to catch up on the OTC, I currently have no less than 26 figures coming in the mail, a mix of OTC and VOTC.  Because they're coming from 4 different people and likely arriving on 4 different days, the cost won't seem so bad when it's split up between those 4 days.  But when I start totalling it all on paper...  :-X

Okay - I'm in this year.  I've got all my reciepts and will add them up periodically.  Rough Estimate, off the top of my head, not including tax:

Animated Clone Wars figures $6.00 x 13 = $78.00
POTC Cantina Wave - $7.00 x 6 = $42.00
Clearance 12" VOTC - 2 x $7.24 = $14.48
Clearance Lego Millenium Falcon - 1 x $55.00 = $55.00
Clearance Lego Mini's - 2 x $1.73 = $3.46
Clearance Lego Mini's - 1 x $2.00 = $2.00
Clearance Lego Cantina Set - 1 x $10.00 = $10.00
Clearance Lego X-Wing - 1 x $10.00 = $10.00
Clearance Cloud Car Pilots - 6 x $2.00 = $12.00
Clearance Hoth Trooper - 1 x $1.18 = $1.18
Clearance VOTC Stormtroopers - 6 x $7.00 = $42.00
Clearance VOTC Stormtroopers (Walmart) - 4 x $5.00 = $20.00
Misc Clearance OTC - 15 x $2.00 = $30.00
Unleashed Aura Siing - 1 x $15.00 = $15.00
Sneak Preview Wave - 8 x $6.00 = $48.00
Darth Maul with Sith Speeder - 1 x $5.00 = $5.00
Darth Maul Deluxe (E1) - 1 x $0.50 = $0.50
Loose Action Fleet X-Wing - 1 x $1.00 = $1.00
Loose Action Fleet Misc - 3 x $3.00 = $9.00

Rough Total 3 weeks into the year:    $398.62

Also, if I just spent 85 dollars on shelving - specifically for my star wars collection, with another 75$ or so to go, does that count?

I won't be picking anything else up today, so I guess I can total things up for the month as well.  I ended up spending a lot more than I anticipated, with finding a few things at retail (and on Amazon) somewhat unexpectedly.  Should be a light couple of months here now though:

1/6/05 - GH Jawa and Tusken
1/6/05 - GH Luke and Gamorrean
1/6/05 - GH Lando and Skiff Guard
1/14/05 - Feltipern Trevagg
1/14/05 - Myo
1/15/05 - Mace Windu (used gift card)
1/21/05 - CW Animated Grievous (used gift card)
1/21/05 - CW Animated Anakin
1/25/05 - Preview Figure - General Grievous
1/25/05 - Preview Figure - R4-G9
1/25/05 - Preview Figure - Tion Medon
1/25/05 - Preview Figure - Wookiee Warrior (x2)

McFarlane Super-articulated Spider-Man (Spider-Man Classics)
Sandman (Spider-Man Classics)
Captain America - Ultimate (Marvel Legends)
Iceman (Marvel Legends)
Juggernaut (Marvel Legends)
Doc Ock (Marvel Legends)
Samwise Gamgee - Gates of Mordor (Lord of the Rings)

Total Star Wars (minus gift cards):$56.34

Total "Other":$52.60

Total for Month:$108.94

First time I've ever come close to spending the same on "other" stuff as I did on Star Wars.  That shouldn't happen again ;).  Feb/Mar should be some lighter times, maybe picking up a few more Wookiee Warriors, Anakin's fighter if I see it, and the CW Animated ARC and Clones if I see them.  Not much non-SW for a little bit at least, perhaps Fantastic Four boxset and/or a few individual Marvel figures if I see them at retail.

Quick question, Brent - should the $17 and change I spent today to ship your package count?  Most of your items were bought last year and anything I did buy this year I marked (for trade).

Any thing I bought from ebay or online includes the shipping cost in it and any associated fees required ($3.25 for an international MO is bull****) to obtain such items.  But I figure trades all work out in the end, especially if it's one for one and didn't count shipping.  Of course, I only mailed two packages (yours and Ben's) this year so the costs aren't extravagant (yet).
Title: Re: The Great 2005 Collector's Challenge
Post by: Morgbug on February 2, 2005, 04:31 PM
Well I've been counting all my costs.   In a trade I count the cost of the item (unless I had it from a previous year, though that seems fairly rare, no one wants old crap anymore) and the cost of the shipping.  Realistically it is a cost of acquiring an item (s) so I think it should count.

Ebay - winning bid amount and shipping and insurance if taken.
Trades - item cost if picked up during current year and shipping costs
Online purchase - cost and any shipping.

For us it's worse (in CAnada that is) because we may still get dinged on the declared amount - $5 CAD fee plus 14% of the declared value >:(  Stoopid communist country.

All that said, it's pretty ballpark.  I probably should have reduced the amount last year because some of the items I picked up were just outright sold for cost and shipping, so not really fair to include them.  At the same time I know I missed a bunch of shipping costs and probably a few items, but they probably evened out in the end.

My (and Dale's and other canuckleheads) total has an "unfair" advantage in this "competition" simply because our postal service sucks.  Example: Nick and I just made a trade.  I sent him a hockey variant, my shipping cost was $11.75 CAD.  He sent me two VOTC stormies and his shipping cost was $4.40 USD.  Again, stoopid communist country.  And to make sure it's clear, I don't think that's anything that needs to be rectified in terms of value.  Shipping in a trade is equal value regardless of the cost, it's not Nick's fault our system sucks and is expensive.

I'm only trying to keep track of what I spent to acquire toys, so taxes, shipping all count.  If I could figure out gas, I'd put that in there too, but realistically I cannot.

GG Han in Stromtrooper Disguese $54.

Since I didn't do this last year  I have a question, if I'm selling stuff do I put that in as a credit (+) from the yearly total or not.

Ouch.  I didn't know your fees were that much.  Next time I'll put a lower value on the form.  :-[

I'll keep track of shipping from now on.

Another "depends" kind of question.  Say you stumbled on a no mask wolverine from series III of Marvel Legends and you paid $8 for it, then turned around and sold it for $250.  I'd claim the $8 in your spent but not the profit.  It ends up rather confusing.

If you're selling stuff you bought in a previous year, well, it's fairly doubtful it would add up to much (unless you're sitting on 20 GG blue clone busts or something like that), so it probably will be negligible too.

If you pick up some preview ROTS figures for someone and then sell them at cost, well that's a net zero.

It's a shotgun approach, not a sniper.   What you miss in terms of + side you'll probably forget in terms of buying stuff.

Well I actually made my 2nd Star Wars purchase of the year, feels weird to be buying so little in the SW market.

1/2/05: POTF Warok Coin: $3
2/2/05: VOTC Han Solo (thanks JJ!): $5.90

Total: $8.90

Heh just notice it was one month in between purchases.  At this rate, I'll be paying less than $100 the whole year, woo hoo! As if.... hah!  :P

There is absolutely nothing that I want and since my sabers won't ship until April, I'm good for two more months.

Well, I kept it under the 291 I needed to stay under and came in at 279 for the month.

I was feeling pretty proud of myself, until I realized I've already spent over 140 bucks only 5 days into this month. And I still don't have the preview figures yet.   I'm not sure if I'll be able to meet my yearly budget goal, but if I resist the urge to buy EVERYTHING I want (and just by the stuff that I think I won't be able to pick up cheaper next year when I have the money) I can probably do it.

BTW.....apologies to Chris for also posting this thread at RS.

I gave the credit to the topic originator when I did it, and I thought it would be cool to have more people participating in this idea. I know I really enjoyed it last year and wanted to "share the love".

I don't think I applied for a patent on this and I'm pretty sure it's not all that original in thought.   Lots have thought of it I'm sure, most were just a little brighter and never wanted to know the truth.

Yeah, I know. I didn't think anyone would mind (with all the cross posting of topics between the two sites) but I saw that there was a little "patent" topic that popped up right after I did it, so I felt like I had broken some unwritten rule or something.  ;D

Anyway, I know it may not seem like an original idea, but it did spur me on to keeping track of what I spend/changing HOW I spend and that's something cool I wanted to share with all the other folks who don't visit our fine little community here.

Once again, Kudos to you for the idea!  ;D

Why do I get one of these every year???

Car repairs: $1500 :'(
Title: Re: The Great 2005 Collector's Challenge
Post by: JoshEEE on February 8, 2005, 03:16 PM
I have a theory on that. Every year or so...your car will need 500 bucks. The older it gets, it becomes a bi-yearly event or more.

Whether it's new tires, an engine part, some minor collision, scheduled maintenance or whatever......at some point or another, your car just needs some money to keep it going.

So whenever I say "My car is in the shop" and someone asks "Why?" I just say:

"It needed 500 bucks".

Damnit, Damnit, Damnit.

I know this is off topic, but I don't really care.  Not ONE DAY after posting in this thread, the check engine light on my car came on and it had to go to the shop.

It's got an emissions problem (that is somehow not covered by the uber warranty I purchased) that costs:

Survey Says?

500 bucks

Sorry for spreading bad karma :-X

Our truck ended up costing $1528 in total.  That's bad enough but I know a couple of the things that were done on the truck need to be done on my car so I can probably look at that amount again :'(

Ok 2 days in a row I've found new stuff, it's almost scary. I've also been buying up a good chunk of Transformers stuff so I've gone ahead and decided to keep track of that here, I'm pretty sure I've bought more TF than SW in terms of money as of this year...

Transformers:
1/2/05: 6x Takara SCF figures: $18
1/23/05: HOC Perceptor (via eBay): $4.24
Takara SCF Act-5 Case (via eBay): $11.00
                * Total For Day: $15.24 *
2/10/05: HOC Full Wave 5 (via eBay): $29.99
2/19/05: Alternators Grimlock: $21.70

Year End Total: $84.93

Star Wars:
1/2/05: POTF Warok Coin: $3
2/2/05: VOTC Han Solo (thanks JJ!): $5.90
2/18/05: ROTS Sneak Preview Wave: $25.40
               OTC Gamorrean Guard: $1.08
               * Total For Day: $26.48 *
2/19/05: ROTS Sneak Preview Anakin Starfighter: $21.70

Year End Total: $57.08

Yep, thought so, I've spent more in Transformers than I have in Star Wars so far, and I only collect a few things in the TF universe. Well that will change come April, oh boy will that change.....

I won't post my who list here but Including a plane ticket to C3 and my C3 4 day pass, I'm up to $439 for the year. That number is going to double by the end of the month, and once I get another job this summer it'll grow pretty quickly. ;)

Looks like a good time to update...end of the month, and right before everything starts tonight/tomorrow.  March was fairly light for me, but not as light as I thought it would be:

Unleashed Count Dooku - $5.00 (on clearance at Wal-Mart)
Galactic Heroes Anakin Skywalker and Count Dooku - $4.79
Galactic Heroes Obi-Wan Kenobi and General Grievous - $4.79
Galactic Heroes Yoda and Sidious - $4.79
Unleashed IG-88 - $14.99
Batman Begins Batman - $6.72
Vintage Burger King ESB Glass Set - $17.45 (including shipping)

Total for Month=$58.53 (plus tax)

Total for Year (Star Wars)=$151.77
Total for Year (Combined)=$217.25

Didn't plan on spending even that much in March, but happened upon a low auction for the ESB glasses, which I've wanted for awhile, and happened upon a lone Unleashed IG-88 at TRU.  The Batman Begins figure was an impulse buy, and the only one I'll get from the line most likely.  April could be a doozy, but I'm (hopefully) going to try to spread things out a bit like Mikey.

March 2005 Total:   $96.29 with tax/shipping

March was slow, but I still managed spend stick around my budgeted $100 thanks to the early RotS vehicle score...

Unfortunately, this weekend should pretty much blow away my April/May/June/July budgets in one swoop!  If only I had known back in January that there could be 40 new figures in April...  :-\

Not to steer this off topic, but I'm with you. If I had known in January how badass this line would be, with the amount of stuff we would be offered, I'd have saved more, but since my chunk of change is going to SW digs at C3, I can't say much about saving. :-X

edit... On a side note, my wife "gave" me her sewing room to expand my Star Wars room as a Valentine's Day gift.  Very cool.  So we decided to build a spare bedroom in the basement, which lead to new carpet, which lead to painting the basement, which lead to some art on the walls.   ::)  Now it looks like this "gift" is going to cost us at least $5000.  That should help me to win this race.   ;)

My January total is $79.71.  Not bad  8).

There is absolutely nothing that I want and since my sabers won't ship until April, I'm good for two more months.

My grand total now is $1,408.65.  Holy crap!!  I did some heavy duty shopping and my lightsabers are shipping.  I can't even fathom what my cc bill will look like when April is done :o.

Just wondering how you guys/gals want to handle the C3 expenses?  I'd suggest that airfare/car expenses should not be included as they'll be really variable depending upon where you live.  Registration should be included though?  I dunno, lmk what you think.

Anything you bought is obviously included.

I was personally going to add everything I spent there over the course of the four days, to be honest: food, alchohol, room, alchohol, registration, alchohol, merchandise, alchohol, and of course alchohol. It's all included in my expense report, since I wouldn't have spent it if I wasn't there, and I was there for Star Wars  :P

My January total is $79.71.  Not bad  8).

There is absolutely nothing that I want and since my sabers won't ship until April, I'm good for two more months.
***************************************************************
My grand total now is $1,408.65.  Holy crap!!  I did some heavy duty shopping and my lightsabers are shipping.  I can't even fathom what my cc bill will look like when April is done :o.

I am now up to $2,086.65.  The biggest chunk of that is for the two replica sabers and Han's blaster.

I started breaking down my excel list, and so far Star Wars is looking like this, since January 1st:

Star Wars total: $604.11 ($37.31 is tax)
Episode III Star Wars: $210.01 ($12.67 is tax)

I'm proud - I really have resisted Ep. III! (relatively speaking)

My budget for this year has already gone absolutely out the window.  I blame Episode 3, even though I should be blaming my lack of self control when it comes to Star Wars collecting.  ;D

I'll have to post an update to this thread later....but I was going over some numbers last night, and I'm pretty close to my budget for the year already.

Well, I've given up completely on tracking my spending.

I've got the reciepts and all, but I've bought a lot of stuff at conventions and have no way of knowing what it all is.

Suffice it to say that I've probably spent about $2000 to $2500 so far - which is absurd.

Hell, I've got over $500 just wrapped up in Army Builders.

Maybe I'll go through the reciepts and try to fill in the blanks and come up with a number this weekend...

I had hoped only to spend about 3500 this year. That averages out to 290 a month.

I've already spent more than 2500 and it's only July 1st, which means I'm averaging about 60 bucks too much each month.

New Unleashed, a ton of mini-busts I haven't paid for yet, and so much product coming out this year pretty much guarantee I'll top the total.  It's making me want to quit again, but I know I probably won't.  ;D

Busts - Yoda, Vader, Han
Statues - Sideshow Vader, Obi
MR - SWS.com helmet, shock trooper helmet, FX anakin & Luke
Kubrick's - 2 series plus chase plus missing chase plus Rebo band
Gee, that's only about $2000 right there.

June 2005 Total:   $107.56 with tax/shipping

Star Wars: $1498.18
Other:  $107.07

Total = $1605.25

Well, I've now passed my budget of $1500 for the year, and the year is only half over.  I'd like to thank Hasbro for cramming 50 basic figures into a 4 month span causing me to seriously blow my budget.

I was looking at 56 RotS figures for 2005 and now we basically got them by July.   :-\  On the bright side, if you remove the April blip (C3 and Midnight Madnesss expenses), I'm actually stickig to my budget pretty well, so it's not a total loss I guess!

Yeah...

I'm giving up the monthly updates and we'll just see at the end of the year how bad I blew out my budget.

I know it's going to be bad because Kubrick Series 4 = $192 and I know I bought more stuff in July than that...

I know, I'm kind of starting to feel that way too.  Although my budget isn't in the ballpark of many others here, I'm sure the spending relative to income is probably similar.  I find myself looking to 2006 and thinking how I hope it will be cheaper.  I really enjoy collecting, but I need to streamline things and keep the budget more in check I think.  Keeping track of the totals these last two years has really put in perspective what else could be bought with all this money ;).  Oh well, moving into a non-movie year(s) and back to themed waves should help a lot...plus if we're seeing more repacks like the OTC, those should be some figures I can pass on as well.  Anyways, the "challenge" has definitely been an eye opener...for all of us I think ;).

I'm just the opposite of you guys, I'm interested to see what I spend and will continue my updates. Of course, I dropped out last year, so maybe that's my motivation.  :P

Wow!  I thought I had spent way too much cash over the years.  I actually have been keeping track of all my purchases since I restarted collecting in 1995.  To date I have only spent around 15K total in the last 10 years.  Its afforded my the balance of my vintage collection.  About 600 carded figs. 500-600 army builders around 60 or so ships and pretty much of everything else, MR, Galactic Heroes, Posters, Comics, etc.   Looks like I can sleep easy tonight.   ;D

Title: Collecting Budget?
Post by: Brian on September 14, 2005, 11:33 AM
Just a quick question along this same topic.  Do any of you have a general "collecting budget" in mind from month to month.  Obviously, it averages out, but is there a target amount you attempt to stick to on a monthly basis?  It always depends on what is available, sometimes a lot of stuff hits at once...and sometimes its a dry spell like you've never seen...and then there are years like this where there is all kinds of stuff hitting in a 2-3 month span.  Anyways, when I first started collecting Star Wars, I pretty much kept to a $30/month budget or so, and that worked pretty well.  Then more and more Star Wars stuff came out, and my interests also branched off into other lines (Marvel, LOTR, DC), so I unfortunately waved bye-bye to that budget awhile ago.  This year has been especially bad (basically 3 to 4 times that), and I'm hoping to return to a more $30-$50 range from here on out.  My wife would rather me go to $10-$15/month, but I told her I thought that was too low ;).  Anyways, does anyone else here set a rough budget for themselves...or thinking about it?

Alright, just broke the grand milestone. $1,009.74 ($54.54 tax) on Star Wars this year.

Interestingly, only $540.76 ($27.94 tax) is for Ep.III stuff. (I keep track of tax just for the heck of it.  This is how Star Wars supports local government spending.)  So that's about $500 more than I planned to spend on Ep.III  ::) .

$1530.81 ($76.62 tax) is the total amount spent of toys this year thus far.

Jason, did you get a receipt with the gunner?  Or can you?  I think I can find you a form to submit to get the tax back.  It might not work unless you've physically visited Canada but it's worth a shot.  LMK if you're interested.

I've not kept track at all but just for fun I'll list what's going to arrive in the days preceding Christmas as they get here.  I'm expecting a fair number of boxes so once they arrive I'll add them to the list:

Sandtrooper white bust
Sandtrooper orange bust
Yoda bust
Code 3 Revenge mini poster

Utapau Shadow Trooper x3
Covert Ops Trooper x2

Crimson Empire TPB and bust ups

Vintage droids figures:
Kea Moll loose complete
Kea Moll carded
Kez Iban carded
Jord Dusat carded
Jann Tosh loose

Kubrick Series 5 case

I have been keeping track, but I've been too ashamed and/or amazed to post it here for the last few months.  I'll try and build up the courage by the end of December.   ;)

I hear those are worth big bucks on eBay.  Is it the limited edition 'Pansy Ass' version?

I don't think I was that close to the top/bottom of the list... I know that BDW spent around $13K and Dale spent around $10K, so my near $7K wasn't that bad. Was it?

Post by: jokabofe on December 2, 2005, 12:06 AM
After a quick scan through the thread to "cheat" and see what everyone else bought and try to remember what I bought, I've come up with this:

ROTS Basic/Preview figures - a total of 77 different figures from what I can tell, including Preview figures and repaints (i.e. #6 White and #6 Shocktrooper counts as 2) - I purchased somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 ROTS figures (at least 2 of each of the 77 or so different figures - 1 carded and 1 loose for my collection) and a ton of Clones for army building, a ton of extras for customizing. 300 is probably a pretty conservative number, actually. It's probably more. But since I don't have an exact count, I'll say 300 @ $6 each = $1800

Evolutions sets - 1 each of Anakin and Sith, and 5 each of Yellow Clones and Grey Clones = 12 @ $20 = $240

ROTS 12" figures (1 Grevious, 1 Palpatine, 1 Barris, 1 Luminaria, 5 Clones) = 9 @ $20 = $180

ROTS Exclusive figures - Holo Yoda, Holo Emperor, Target's Stupid Expensive Lava Figures and Clones, Jedi Temple Assault, Clone Attack on Coruscant, etc. $270

Target Cup Sets - 7 @ $15 each (don't ask me why, but that's what they cost here) = $105

Celebration 3 - C3 Vaders x4, GG Sandtrooper, Code3 ESB Mini, C3 Exclusive Posters and Prints, Yoda Key Cel, Exclusive Plush Yoda, Shirts, Sweatshirts, etc. etc. $1500 (I took $2000 in cash with me, came back with about $20, figure $500 or so was on food/drinks and the rest was on actual merch).

ROTS Deluxe figures - 7 @ $10 = $70

Code 3 ESB & ROTJ Sculpted Posters @ $80 each = $160

Unleashed figures - 9 @ $15 each = $135

GG Busts - Han, Leia Boushh, IG88, ROTS Yoda, ROTS Vader, Sandtrooper x2, C-3PO SWS.com exclusive - $400

ROTS Mini Sabers - 3 @ $45 each = $135

Books - 365 Days Creating the Worlds of Star Wars, Ultimate Visual Guide, Art of ROTS, Making of ROTS, etc. etc. etc. $250

Add that to my Jan/Feb total: $2558.99

And I've spent somewhere in the neighborhood of: $7800.  :o

I know that I am absolutely missing stuff from this list. I know it. As a matter of fact, I can see stuff here already that I didn't add to this list, just some odds and ends. A toy box, a toy organizer (that doesn't work so well, 'cause my **** is still a mess), some snowglobes, Kubricks, Bust-ups, comic books, Vintage Posters that I forgot to add.... so I'm gonna throw another few bucks on there, and just make it an even $10,000 for the year.

Next year, I'm going to itemize every single thing. I'm going to keep every receipt, and record every ebay transaction. I did it last year, this year I had some personal stuff that kept me in a bad mood for a bit, so I didn't spend as much money as I could have (if you can believe that). But next year, I'm hoping to scale back quite a bit. Almost $7K last year and another $10K this year... ugh.

Barring any huge clearance finds next week, my latest vintage pickups should put an end to the 2005 campaign. A lot of money spent this movie year, hopefully to decrease considerably next year or at least focus more on vintage. The tallying was a good thing, it gave me a clear idea if I was spending outside of my means and thankfully I didn't. OK, here we go.  It's been a wild year - I've always been a carded collector and had about 75% of the basic figures up to OTC.  Then we decided to renovate the basement and I expanded my Star Wars display area and suddenly wanted a loose collection as well.

Here's what happens when you lose control.   ;) :-[ :D :'(

$12,160.16 or $15,106.89CDN.

I am hoping to stick to my $100 a month budget again this year, but I may have to end up selling some stuff to stick to that budget thanks to Celebration 3 and RotS pile-up of goods...

Well, well, well...  My target Budget for 2005 was $1200 out-of-pocket.  What that meant was that I could spend more than $1200 if I needed, but only if I sold some stuff and used that cash to go over the budget.

How did I do?  Not so good...  :-[

Actual "Out-of-Pocket" Expenses for 2005 = $2354.81   :(

OK, so I actually spent a bit more than that, but I sold off some stuff I bought so that lowered the total back down a bit.

I think that if I had skipped the trip to C3 and skipped the Kubricks for 2005, I would have been fine... of course the Kubricks and C3 were probably my two favorite things from this year, so I'm glad I blew my budget for them!   ;)

Once again, I am extremely happy that I manage to skip a lot of the "other" lines.  If I were collecting GG busts, bust-ups, MR stuff, Sideshow, etc etc I'm sure I'd rank right up there with the rest of the high-rollers.   :P
Title: Re: The Great 2005 Collector's Challenge
Post by: Morgbug on December 30, 2005, 12:44 PM
I just out and out gave up keeping track.  I think I was probably lower than the preceding year, but still pretty high.  Not Jesse high, but perhaps the 5-7K range this year.

I was saved by a lot of items not arriving in 2005 so I was never charged on them:
MR Shock Trooper Helmet
Sideshow Vader
Sideshow Ben (though I think this was always 2006)

Other items I paid for and I nervously await:
MR Special Ops helmet.

Being mostly done vintage saved a lot of cash, as did not chasing McFarlane stuff nearly so hard.  C3 was a bit pricey, but worth every penny to get to meet so many of the good people that I've met at this site.  And to get my picture with Phil ;D

I'm opting/hoping to scale back a fair bit for 2006 now that ROTS is pretty much done.  We'll see what Hasbro pumps out for the year.  But I think I'll continue on with the vintage stuff as well, moving into boxed vehicles and the like.  Time will tell.

yeah I think Jesse has taken the cake, ouch!

even in this movie year I hadn't expected to have spent so much, but over 1/3 of my spending went to vintage and C3 so I guess I'm a bit skewed. thankfully it looks like there will be a lot of rehashing for 06 so I can save there and work on buying more vintage.

Epilouge: Wow, what a crazy year 2005 was! Great in terms of collecting, not so great in terms of personal events. I know that if certain things hadn't happened during the course of this year, that the totals would have been higher. Nevertheless, here are the results...

I actually kept tracked, but stop posting monthly totals around the middle of the year.

Without listing everything I bought, here's my totals:

Star Wars - $1,914.45
Other (Marvel Legends, Sportspicks, etc.) - $515.53
Grand Total - $2,429.98

I kept fairly close track of things, but stopped posting monthly as well after I was getting shocked/depressed with what I was spending.  Although considerably less than some, it was definitely more than it should be for our budget, and I cut back considerably the last 1/4 of the year.  I'm shooting for about half of this total for next year, or lower, if I can.  Time to condense.

Star Wars - Approx. $1100
Other (Marvel/DC) Approx. $280

Approx. Total for 2005 - $1380.00
Title: Re: The Great 2005 Collector's Challenge

Time for a summary:

Ranat - $1,234.57
Brian - $1380.00
Diddly - $1423.93
Xander - $1530.81
CorranHorn - $1,636.89
*Rotav Vator* - $1754.55
Jeff - $2354.81
Mikey D - $2,429.98
Hemish - $4438.00
jadesfire - $5488.46
jokabofe - $10,000
JesseVader08 - $12,160.16

Is there anyone that I missed or wants to update their totals?

Nope, sorry, you win/lose Jesse, hands down.  Unless Adam is around still and doing even wackier things than last year.  I'm sure Dale is up close as well, but probably below Dave.  I'd guess I came in behind Dave as well and possibly lower than Dale as well.  I like the number that Mikey/Jeff have, that's a nice goal.  Sadly for us it's not too likely, even if we bought the exact same stuff it would cost us considerably more.   :-\

No idea as I never kept track this year but if I was to take a guess it would not be as high as it was last year.

Last year was $11839.78 CDN or approx $9,858 as Matt calculated it for me.  :P

Anywhere around the $6000.-$8000. US mark but unsure.  :-\

Definitely not has high as Jesse's.  ;D

That's about what I was thinking too, fair bit of Kubricks, vintage and some higher end stuff, so the total was higher.  But I'd guess I was lower than the previous year, so that's an improvement.  I'll try and get it below $5K this year :P

Yeah, I'm assuming that the totals for 2006 will be lower this year, especially for people like me who mainly buy Hasbro figures, thanks to all the repacks/repaints we'll be getting.

BTW, where's this years new thread? ;)

You can't take it with you (the money... when you die)... I'd love to be able to drop 12,000 on stuff I want... you truly are a lucky man!

Mine's well...interesting

My total cost was 5600.00

I paid 3000.00, my bro paid 2600.00 (combined brothers collection)

then, 750 went back as trades

So all in all approx.4850.00 on SW :P.. Damned movie years..about 2000.00 minimum more than we usually spend :(
