Title: Will there be 12" figures for Episode 3?
Post by: Snively Bandar on August 27, 2004, 06:56 PM
I sporadically collect the 12" line, and was wondering if there was any Episode 3 news on it lately (Comic Con, etc)?  It seems like the 12" line has really been fizzling out of late, aside from the three VOTC figures, so I've been growing a little concerned over the fate of this line.  I figured an Episode 3 release would give it enough of a shot in the arm that perhaps they'd pump out some new OT figures as well.

What would you guys want to see in an ROTS 12" line?  Obviously a new Vader goes without saying.  Grievous would certainly be interesting, and potentially cool if he was done well.  What else?

I definitely understand the concern regarding the 12" line.  It's getting less and less market share as time goes on.  I think the truth is that interest in this part of the Star Wars line is just fizzling out.

As for a ROTS 12" line, I think we'll see the following:

-Obi-Wan Kenobi
-Anakin Skywalker
-Yoda
-Darth Sidious
-Padme (hopefully one that actually looks like her)
-Grievous
-Darth Vader
-Clone Trooper
-Royal Guard
-Wookiee Warrior?

My interest is there for the line.  However, Hasbro has to attempt a better variety of figures IMO.  For the OT line where is Hammerhead, Weequay. Oola, Probe Droid, Leia Bespin Gown, Jabba the Hutt, Max Rebo Band, Yak Face, Ephant Mon, EV-9D9.  I realize some of those are minor characters but it's better than a steady diet of Luke, more Luke, and then some more Luke, with another Han, another Kenobi, etc.

I would like to see more 12" figures done. As mentioned, not much has been done with the line except with the VOTC.

A Grievous figure would just rock if done right, new Clone Trooper, Darth Vader sort of a Birth of Vader (removable helmet), Wookiee Warrior.  8)

Ephant Mon would be nice, it would be heavier than the Gamorrean Guard.  ;D

In the link below it talks about the possible new line up for 12" figures for 2005.

POSSIBLE SPOILER INFORMATION IS BELOW:

I like the fact that they are going with Bariss and Aayla but I had better get a decent Padme in this mix as well.  I'm hoping for the speeder bike Leia body so they will have at least have articulation.  Tough call on the faces but since both have paint it might help with the similiarity.  As for the Grevious and Anakin, well that's really a no brainer.  I just hope Grevious has a ton of articulation (as does Anakin).

I am happy an Aayla Secura is getting made.  I'm surprised they are making Bultar Swan?  I can see them doing a 3 inch figure but a 12 incher?  I hope there are some other ones coming.  Like Palpatine or Tarful.

If they decided to cancel the 12" line, ROTS would be the only prequel without a 12" collection. I am willing to bet they will crank out a few Episode 3 12" figures.

Hope they don't charge $30 for them, like the OTC 12" series. :P

Color me impressed too, unless they're completely unposeable figures (as usual).

The outfits are pretty ornate though...  Maybe they're trying to redeem themselves on 12" figures?

I'm genuinely surprised by these offerings.  Female characters don't tend to sell as well as male ones.  However most of the Jedi that have been offered in the 12" line have sold decently.

They look good, but the fanboys will always have issues with the lightsaber colors.  Even I noticed in this case.

Me to.  Of all the Clonetrooper designs to make into a 12 incher this one has to be near the bottom of the pile you would think.

I'm not a 12" figure collector, but it is amazing to me how good these figures look in their "specially lighted" loose shots.  Not quite as spiffy packaged though from the way it looks.  At least there will be something new for 12" collectors this year though, seems like it has been awhile.

Darth Sidious looks pretty weak, but Grievous looks incredible.  It could very well be the first 12" figure I've ever bought.

I stand corrected, there will be at least 2 12" figures I buy this year.

Any guesses as to how much this bad boy is going to set up back?  I'd guess $60CDN, considering the OTC 12" were $40CDN.

(What did you guys pay in US $ for the OTC 12"?)

From the Hasbro Toy Fair Press Release... Approximate Retail Price: $49.99 (in the USA).  I'd expect a bit more at the e-tailers, but should be close to $50 at TRU/Target/Wally.

What did we pay for the 100th Luke up here? I think it was just over the $60. CDN mark with taxes.

If US price is $50, then I wouldn't be surprised to see it at $70 up here.   :'(
At that price, I may have to have second throughts.

As for 100th Luke, I can't quite remember, but I think it may have been $50CDN + tax, something like that.  But since this is Darth Vader, I'm sure he'll command more than that.  Of course, I'd like to be wrong about that.

Well yeah, but seeing as shipping's $15 bucks a figure, that might've had something to do with it. Technically, you're paying about double retail.

I don't know if anyone else has seen it yet (I just saw the link to it on Galactic Hunter myself), but WM.com has opened their ROTS "store" online.  Even though they aren't available to order yet, I noticed that the first wave of 12" dolls (Sidious, Clone, and Grievous) are priced at just under 19 bucks.  This is actually very interesting news, considering the fact that WM last sold the 12" dolls at a 25 dollar price point (not counting the VOTC from last fall), and I figured they'd be gouging for every dollar they could get during "The Last Hurrah."

So, if you're looking to pick these up, it looks as if WM (for now) will have the best price on them.

If you plan on opening up this one for display - KEEP THE RUBBERBANDS!!
His hands will NOT hold these sabers without them!!  I never usually cut the rubberbands and this is the one time it worked in my favor.  You will need these to hold the sabers up.  I have loaded some images to my 12" doll page below.  Awesome figure though, cape is well made and I love the detailing on the back.  You can separate his arms (see picture) to four distinct positions or combine them into two.  No place to hang the extra sabers if you go with two hands but then I am not exactly sure what I should look for since I haven't seen the movie yet :)

Title: Grevious Alert and Sidious review
Post by: jadesfire on April 2, 2005, 04:31 PM
You're welcome :)

I just loaded images of Darth Sidious and I have to say, the saber is what makes this one so perfect.  His hand holds it well and he has plenty of articulation for battle poses just wish they would have given him a full black shirt instead of a half turtleneck. :-\
The cape is full and thick and he has black pants and boots underneath with the half-shirt.  The face is really good (really pale, which makes it all the more creepy with the hood up).  I was surprised as I didn't think I would like it that much.  The hood is just the right size so you can drap it forward and cover the top of his head completely, place it  directly on top of his head (and still not look "too" roomy) or just drap it down the back.

Added the clonetrooper as well.  I like this one since I will be able to put him in various poses (standing, running, kneeling) so I am going back to buy more of him.  All in all, great job by Hasbro and I am can't wait for the 12" female jedi!!!

Post by: DoctorPadawan on April 7, 2005, 07:22 PM
Well, I've had two days to sit and simmer on this, and I have to say that the 12" Anakin/Vader Ultimate Villain doll is the most disappointing item I have gotten thus far.  At first I thought it was just me needing to get used to how it worked, but after 2 days and several hours of trying to get it to do what it is advertised as being able to do (changing Anakin into Vader and all), I've simply given up.   I'm so discouraged that I actually sent Hasbro an email telling them how in the 27 years or so that I've been collecting SW, and other Hasbro products like Joes and TFs in the 1980's, no other product has made me more frustrated and upset to the point of writing a letter than this doll.

Basically, for those of you who haven't opened it up, the Anakin uses the older, mid-90's Joe body.  So he's bulkier, to be sure, but that's not the problem.  The problem is that the ankles on this body are not articulated and it makes putting the boots on nearly impossible.  The lower legs are one solid piece and the boots, being boots, are very tall, reaching almost to the knees of Anakin and all the way past on Vader.  The material used for the boots is too rigid to roll them down, and it took me an hour just to get one Vader boot on and another two before I finally gave up on the second one and redressed him as Anakin.

This kind of goes into what Tydirium has been saying about Hasbro's recent "They're toys and meant to be played with!" attitude on their website, because the action features on the small figures, while questionable in quality, are only a 6 dollar mistake.  This entire figure/doll is based on the premise of being able to change outfits and due to his feet and boots, you can't even do that without large machinery and the Force itself apparently.  As I told Hasbro, if I, well-educated and possessing fine motor skills, am unable to put boots on a doll, what hope does a 10 year old kid (their target audience that they always talk about) have of doing so?

So, yeah, Anakin/Vader is back in his box (after an hour spent getting his Anakin boots back on  ::)  and I'm really regretting the 45 dollars I spent on it.  Naturally, K-Mart won't take it back since it has been opened, so I'm (for the moment) stuck with a 12" Anakin/Vader that is useless to me.
Title: Re: Will there be 12" figures for Episode 3?
Post by: jadesfire on April 7, 2005, 07:48 PM
Wow, very sorry to hear about the poor quality of Vader/Anakin and really sorry K-mart won't take it back.  I never opened mine yet and I'm glad I didn't.  I will probably be returning mine now since I wanted to be able to change them back and forth when the mood suits me and since it's not going to be an option, back to Target he goes.
I do appreciate you sharing this, though, as it saved me a giant headache (and some cash too).
Title: Re: Will there be 12" figures for Episode 3?
Post by: DoctorPadawan on April 7, 2005, 09:15 PM
Thank you for the kind words, jadesfire, but after all, it is only a toy (at least that's what I keep telling myself).  I'm going to try and see what K-Mart could do (even if it's just store credit, I would go that route before getting a replacement that would have the same problem), but I'm actually curious to hear what Hasbro's response to my letter is (if any).

I just find it really disheartening that this doll, which by all rights should have been the centerpiece of the ROTS toy lineup overall, ended up having a major flaw that affects its ability to do what the box and all the marketing implicitly states it does.

I'll let everyone know if/when I hear back from Hasbro.  I'm not wanting a replacement or anything like that (although if they did a new one with the new style body, with articulated ankles, I probably would take that), but I'm actually more worried about people buying it en masse and taking it home to the kids only to find out that Vader has to get around barefoot unless they want to cut the backs of the boots in half.

EDIT:  Update 1-I just finished speaking to someone at K-Mart's 800 number regarding the situation.  According to this phone representative, since I still have the original packaging (sans the rubber bands) and the register receipt, and since it is still in the 90-day return window, she stated that I should have no problem returning the Vader for a refund.  When I mentioned to her that I had bought the doll at a K-Mart store quite a distance from where I lived and asked if I could return it to a closer K-Mart (like you can with Wal-Mart), she stated that it should not be a problem, but to call and speak to the manager and explain the situation to him before I made the trip out there.  I will update tomorrow morning when I know something for sure.

Post by: jokabofe on April 8, 2005, 01:33 AM
Something about that Anakin/Vader just doesn't look right to me. Aside from the $45 price tag, I mean. I've already got 2 good 12" Vaders and a crappy Anakin, so I feel like this is enough. I passed on the new Anakin/Vader 12" on 4/2 and I'm glad I did.

I'm really digging the packaging on these new 12" figures too, so much so that I've been unable to bring myself to open them up just yet, but that might change very soon. I'm still undecided if I want to pick up another of each, since I don't keep any of my 12" collection boxed, but the packaging on these just kicks so much ass I may have to.

I kept this Ultimate Vader in the package.  I knew it would be better looking that way than try to mess with actually putting all the armor on him and off.  Allthough I do like the scarred head quite a bit.  To bad it did not come with some burnt robes and more detacheable limbs.
Title: Re: Will there be 12" figures for Episode 3?
Post by: DoctorPadawan on April 8, 2005, 03:24 PM
Well, this story has a happy ending.  I called the local K-Mart this morning to make sure it would be okay for me to return the Vader to them (considering this wasn't the K-Mart that I bought the doll from in the first place) and they assured me it would be.  I just returned from, well, returning the doll and it went very smoothly.  The woman at customer service was extremely nice and understanding and helpful; I could not have asked for a smoother return experience, and as such, I will be giving this K-Mart more of my business in the future.  At least its employees are generally nice, which is more than I can say for Wal-Mart.

And while I was typing this post, I received an email from Hasbro regarding the email I sent them last night.  It was as follows:

Quote
Thank you for contacting us. We appreciate your taking the time to share your opinion with us.

Consumer satisfaction is very important to us. We will share your comments with our management team so that they are also aware of your views.

Since our ultimate goal is to bring happiness to the consumers who use our products, and certainly not disappointment, under separate cover we will be sending you a coupon for you to use when you purchase your next Hasbro product.

We want to assure you that we are dedicated to maintaining quality products and service. We hope you and your family will enjoy our products for many years to come.

Although a coupon isn't necessary or warranted (IMO), I do hope that my comments sent to them regarding the doll will lead them to use one of the newer style bodies (with a note saying that it is "IMPROVED" or something on the package) in future Anakin/Vader dolls.  I'm not advocating a total recall (DAMN YOU KUATO!), but at the same time, for such a visible and important piece of ROTS merchandise to be of such low quality is disheartening.

Standard issue reply, but at least you got one.

Yes, that ultimate 12" Vader/Anakin looks cool, but I knew it would be trouble and that is why I did not buy one.

I learned my lesson with the Deluxe version - does anyone else have this POS?

It falls in line with the 12" version from the sound of it...nothing fits and you have to have the strength of twelve men to fit the Vader head on...

Just a quick update to the Anakin/Vader debacle I posted about earlier in this thread: according to my mother, I received a letter from Hasbro with a coupon for THREE DOLLARS OFF any Hasbro toy.  Of course, I immediately thought that it would probably say "Expires June 13, 1997" or something along those lines, but I'll know for sure once I see it myself.

I am still fully expecting to find some weird restriction that says "Only valid on purchases made in the state of Nebraska on the Tuesday following the Fourth of July weekend at Ted's Gas and Gulp off of Route 66" or some other similar hoop to jump through.   ::)

As for Grievous (to get this back on track), I can't get a lightsaber to stay in his hands either with or without the rubber bands, and I have been trying.  Hasbro's cheap ass plastic strikes again.  Between the Grievous rubber hands that can't hold his weapons and the Anakin/Vader nonbendy feet, I'm thinking that Hasbro Direct is employing those monkey puppets that StarWarsShop.com had during the initial fiasco at their site these days.

I don't get my Grievous until X-Mas.  Struck a deal with my parents to buy it for me as a "gift".  Anyway, that sucks about the poor General.  It's always nice when the figures can not hold their own weapons.

I got a question.  I was wondering if I was dreaming or what?  Where they going to release a 12 inch Aayla Secura?  I could have sworn that was announced at one time.

I saw 2 Shaak Ti's and 1 Barriss Offee at my TRU yesterday. $29.99 plus tax so $32.08 or $25.63 US each.

thanks.  I'll have to make a few phone calls to my sisters and get them in on the hunt  ;).

I'm just wondering if anyone has seen the two Jeid female dolls yet?  I saw them at C3 in dealer booths for $40.00 each but I am too cheap for that.

Picked up both Shaak Ti and Barris Offee at WalMart on Wednesday morning. They were around $19 each plus tax.

I was shocked to find them there - the store where I found them hasn't really gotten anything new since 4/2 (no figures #33 - #40, no deluxe wave 2, etc...).

Another alternative jadesfire would be to pick them up from the Hasbro Toy Shop website - they are $19.99 each on there.

Any truth to the rumors that these two female Jedi are the LAST of the ROTS 12" offerings? I recall reading in the reports from C3 that they don't have any plans to make any more and the entire future of the 12" line is uncertain.

I could definitely use a break from collecting the 12" figures and would welcome them killing the line - especially since the quality has always varied from mediocre to poor.

I did just that the day they opened the Star Wars virtual doors :)
Now I just have to wait 12-14 days to see if I actually GET it  :-\.

I ordered them from the Hasblo website, and sometime in the 10 days it took those morons to process my order, they became "Unavailable"

I picked them up today at TRU and I am very impressed.  The clothing is well done and both figures are very detailed!

One odd thing is that they have no feet inside their boots!  :o

Forgot to post I got mine (sorry to read about your screw job Matt_Fury, glad you found 'em at TRU).  Links below to pictures in my 12" doll section:

Good news!  I really want those 2 female Jedi.  Even though they were not prominently shown in ROTS :(  I just hope we are getting more 12 inch figures than this from this and other SW flicks.

I saw Barriss just a couple days ago, but I'm totally brainfarting now on whether it was at TRU, or Target.  But she's definitely hitting now, as is Shaak Ti I would assume.

But after those two, I'm afraid that it looks like the 12" line is going to be toast (not that I collect it).  Sorry folks...  :-\

I think you're right JM.  I am now trying to pick up cheap TPM Amidala dolls to repaint so I can have someone I can put all these gowns I've been making on.  It ticks me off that the last Padme was such a half ass attempt.  I don't have the skill to repaint a doll to look exactly like her but at least with EP 1 dolls, I can get them close and the hair is easier to work with.

I'm wondering if another company will pick up this scale of the line and do a more "collector" series with it.

Oh well, I need to get a few more Barriss's as I already have plans for two dolls with her!!

Pretty neat, Beth.  You don't see a lot of people making the effort to customize the 12" line.  Will we be seeing pics of your efforts?

I have my old ones from Ep1 and 2 up on my webpage... I think....I'll have to check.  I've done a few Arwen's too (thanks to Scott again for helping me with tracking her down) but Padme is, by far, my favorite.  I know I've seen some amazing paint jobs on some of these larger "action figures" and I could only wish to be able to some of that...it's easier for me just to sew and hope I luck out with getting the hair right.

But yes, once I get some more dolls, I'll post away over in the customizing section.  I'm always amazed at what people do with the 3 3/4" line.  I can't paint worth crap, that's why I stick to the bigger line....at least it's not as hard ;).

Yes, you are probably correct Matt.  I can understand why.  The people running the 12 inch line are complete idiots.  Have been for a long time.  I am ticked we won't ever get a 12 inch Hammerhead among others.

I still can't figure out why Hasbro does not put a Yoda out there during the intial runs of AOTC and now ROTS.  Pure idiocy.

I'm not sure if this is accurate, but wasn't there supposed to be a Count Dooku 12" figure?  Was this ever released, or did I just dream this up?

I never heard of Dooku coming from ROTS.  I did think Aayla Secura was though.  I must have dreamed that one up on my own.

I don't see why they would make one for ROTS since he looks exactly the same as he did in AOTC.  (The Saga 12" Dooku is a great 12" figure btw.)

i just wish 1) they'd release more of them, period, and 2) release more of them in canada...the only 12 inch figure i've seen at retail aside from the ROTS figures was a Saga Obi Wan (electronic sounds) from Ep II. I didn't even know that Shaak Ti and Barriss offee were even available up here:(

If you plan on opening up [General Grievous] for display - KEEP THE RUBBERBANDS!!
His hands will NOT hold these sabers without them!!

Damn, I wish I would have remembered your warning about this Beth.  I absolutely love how he looks, it's an incredible sculpt from head to toe, but he will not hold the lightsabers.  If I keep his arms together, he can almost hold 2 sabers, but there's no way he'll hold all 4 when his arms are split because the plastic is way, way too soft.  I'll have to see if I can track down some tiny rubber bands to help hold the sabers.

The other annoyance is the articulation in his elbows - twist them beyond their small range of motion and the forearms just pop off.

Like I said, I love how he looks, including his amazing cape, but Hasbro  dropped the ball on a couple issues.
