Clone Wars '03-'05 / Re: Clone Trooper 4 Packs!
« on: January 4, 2005, 08:43 PM »
Would it literally or would it because Hasbro would say "But you get a poster!?" :)

Honestly, a poster adds little value or cost to it...  Really, they have not a solid excuse in their pockets as to the costs of these.  I'm seeing some label the term "exclusive" as a reason for increased cost, but when all the mold toolings are done and the packaging is relatively simplistic (which it is) then there's not even much cost there beyond basic production.

With the molds being tooled, these should be $5 a piece, or less.

They should chime in at the 4-pack TRU price, where you at least get something NEW in each set generally.

This is one of those days you don't know what to do with yourself as a collector...  You just got something you asked for, but not even VAGUELY in the ballpark of the price you asked for it at.  There's another cruel irony to all this.  The company that reads the boards, totally glossed over ALL the SA Clonetrooper discussions that have gone on around the net in the last year +, as they all said that "Wow if we got these in a 4-pack like the Stormtroopers and stuff, that'd be great".

So Hasbro decides to A) change the packaging...  OK, cool, I don't mind that in the least since it looks nice.  And then B) increase the price by what, 50% from what those other 4-packs ran?

And they were all but exclusive in name too as I recall.  The Stormie set WAS exclusive to the fan club for quite some time...  The others were "dumped" when the Fan club folded then...

This is bull ****, plain and simple.  I'm as close to being genuinely pissed off at collecting as I have been in a long time.  This hobby shouldn't frustrate us to this extent, ever.

Total crap my friends...  Total crap.

What more can I add?

Hasbro could've sold these damn things at retail and probably pushed more product, and made more $ for themselves.  At this stage of the game, I doubt people go ape **** and build mass armies with this...  I think we'll see it fail on some level, and Hasbro will take punishment out on us saying "well it didn't do well".

Yet another point in time the company won't pull its head out of its ass long enough to see the big picture, and that they could've easily moved that product at basic retail without having to screw its customers.

If someone needs another person to go in on a case, I'd really like to do that since it's the cheapest option to get a set.  Let me know, please.  I'm not sure after reading the thread exactly which of you guys need people to go in on one with you or not.

Just hit me up though!

This is a huge kick to the nuts...  It's a great concept, and it's something they needed to do for ages, but they executed like they do with so many other things by totally screwing us over in the process and then they'll blame the idea and the product instead of their own execution of it.  Great...  God dammit you know nobody running the show there is a fan at this point.

The Wookiee Arcade / Re: Wow, NEW Star Wars FPS: Republic Commando
« on: January 4, 2005, 08:57 AM »
Check the main page here at Jedi Defender guys...

New Republic Commando movies at Yahoo Games.  Links on the main page.

REALLY great stuff in the videos.  I mean, they took squad-based FPS's and improved them.  That's a good game, so let's hope this takes off.  I could stand "Alliance Commando" and "Imperial COmmando" as well as a nice Merc/Pirate version too...  These look great.

On the $3 slipcase, there's one catch.  Gotta have a credit card (no debits it says) which sucks for those without.  And one per household...  I had a hell of a time getting one for my brother.  Darn site gave me fits.

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: Did OTC Do Well?
« on: January 3, 2005, 10:28 PM »
Something to consider, and I was touching on this in my original post...

What if sales weren't "high" because production wasn't high?  Adam Pawlus's Q&A column hinted that much of OTC was not highly produced.

Like I said, we view this as great sales...  Things moved off the shelves quickly, product didn't really sit stagnant (some did and still does).  But what if production didn't match nearly what a normal run of figures/sales does for Hasbro?  Sales aren't so great then...

I tend to agree Scott, that we're seeing a bad precedent beginning with OTC.  At the same time though, tooling new figures can mean higher sales in total units sold...  What it'll depend on now is if their department for determing cost and cutting from certain areas/activities will find out if re-releasing short runs of figures is more financially sound than making higher production runs of new product.

What I think we'll wind up seeing is more of a mix in non-movie years, somewhat similar to OTC.  Idealy it would be MORE new product than repackaged though, for us. :)

Like I was saying in my first post though, yes things moved, but did Hasbro really make a TON of money with it?  If they didn't sell nearly as much as they would've if it was all new product, there's two possible answers...  That the lower overall sales outweighed the lower costs and they made $, or that new product maybe would've cost more but they would've sold more units and made more $ in the long run.  That, I don't think we'll ever know, but one thing is for sure...

If Hasbro gloats up SW in a press release, they did well...  If they don't, then you can bet OTC didn't do as well as people are maybe thinking by looking at the pegs of their local store.  This isn't a black & white issue though, there's a lot they've gotta look at with this.

And with the DVD release and all that being a big media blitz, I just really wonder if OTC really didn't do ALL that well beyond it NOT clogging pegs.  I'm not ready to say OTC was "a hit" though myself.  I'm leaning right now towards Hasbro, at most, doing a mix of re-releases now more steadily with new product, especially in non-movie years.

The Wookiee Arcade / Star Wars: Empire At War
« on: January 3, 2005, 07:50 PM »
A new classic trilogy era RTS is on the way according to reports...  News has been out a little bit now, but the first article on it is coming from Europe I guess.

Not much to say for now other than it seems to include fleet battles as well as ground combat, and the TIE Crawler's making an appearance for the first time.

While I welcome a new RTS with open arms, the idea makes me curious if it will actually be any good.

Force Commander's a legitimately SOLID game that was built from the ground up by Lucasarts, rather than a knock-off game of a "popular" RTS game that was outdated by the time they basically did a Star Wars version of it.  Battlegrounds had support from casual gamers, but I don't think the game ever appealed to anyone who played RTS's often.

Force Commander's difficult interface ended up being its major downfall then, and we were left without a RTS that appealed to everyone.

If this game doesn't have:

A) Good gameplay
B ) Good interface/controls
C) Good storyline
D) Excellent graphics
E) Epic scale (IE: Lots and LOTS of units on a big map)
F) Scaled playing units (IE: An AT-AT isn't as big as an AT-ST on the field)
G) 3-D gameplay, units, maps, etc.
H) And a continuation of ground units ESTABLISHED in both previous games and EU, as well as the films.

Well then this game isn't going to be a great success.  LA's gotta get their crap together with this.  Force Commander was close to a home run.  Galactic Battlegrounds was nothing more than a mod to an existing ANCIENT gaming engine (It's like playing Doom with Star Wars characters...  It's nothing original whatsoever).

LA better nail this one...  3rd time has to be the charm or RTS is just something they'll never get right, or even try to again I think.

And then they better get off their asses and make a new flight sim, because the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series...  arguably the most profitable series for Lucasarts ever...  Has faded.  Make a new game already...  Finish the damn story for the Azzameen's already...  Move on into the post ROTJ era already...  Just do something!

Pitt with another close one...  Meant nothing but it's always fun to get the W.

And Plaxico Burress' house was broke into while he was at  the game, and one of the suspects was armed I guess...  I guess they were caught as well, but took $65k worth of jewelery alone, among many other things.

Dave,

Where'd you find the AOD figures?  I gotta get at least some of the ones with the regular Skeletons in them...  Custom fodder an'at.

20833
Up till the other night I had seen 2 total at retail.  Got the rest in trades and from Matt.  Not abundant here, but those 4 I found I personally think are stock that's been sitting in the back of WM for a time, ya know?

It's like the ANH wave clogged them up so much the other stuff came in, but never saw the floor till now.  I know that when the Falcon Carrying Cases came out, there was no room for them on the shelves and then they got dumped out on an endcap within the store for clearance because they were old.  At the time I gobbled up all that I could for the scanner techs and sold the cases off as fodder junk for cheap.

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: VOTC/OTC Purchases
« on: January 3, 2005, 01:02 AM »
I picked up 3 ANH VOTC tonight (Leia, Ben, and Luke) at Wal-Mart, a Scanner Tech, and 2 Cloud Car Pilots...

Figured I'd get some custom fodder while I had the $ and it was available.  In my neck of the woods, the ANH wave is only at select Wal-Marts while others are bare bones dry of VOTC or have some ESB leavins.  The WM I went to tonight is a lower traffic one, but any of the busy ones are darn near empty of figures at all.

The MP reference was inevitable...

Fans could do Star Wars over so much more funny if given the resources to do so.  Bah at Lucas and his poor sense of humor.
