Title: 2011 Toy Fair Stuff
Post by: Jesse James on February 12, 2011, 02:56 PM
The news has poured in for Joe as much as anything...  Looks like a big year for the line.  New cards, new Skystriker, new lots of everything it seems.  And Renegades being realistic is a great thing and every reason I wished Clone Wars had been too.

We've been trying to keep up with the live news from the guys at the show in our Hasbro Toy Fair Early News (http://www.jedidefender.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1297536858,67664,) post but it's a fast and furious pace to keep up with any line right now.  Seems like there's a lot of news already though and I'm sure I'm missing tons of details.

I'll put this here, but it applies to Joe and SW (and probably other lines) but does it seem to anyone else that San Diego Comic-Con is starting to gain too much power over exclusive releases?  Joe, SW and Indy are all getting exclusives that a lot of people would like a shot at and may not be possible unless you want to pay scalper prices on eBay.

SDCC aside, sounds like some good info for Joe this year.  I like the sounds of some of the figures and the 30th anniversary celebration with a Skystriker?  Brilliant.  Plus, and I could wrong because the info isn't clear yet, it sounds like we're getting that steady gun that was supposed to come with Destro.  And that's awesome news.

FLOORED about the Skystriker and the Screamer repaint w/cc....BRILLIANT!   ;D

Any news about Slaughter that they promised us another round of?

I'm not too distressed over SDCC, yet...  I'm guessing the Raiders figures will be available elsewhere, as will the Skystriker...  It sounds like the only thing about the Revenge cards is the box they come in which is relatively inconsequential to me, as I doubt I'll buy them at retail either.  Depends on what the final price is come their release I suppose.

My big bitch at this point is $8.99 figures.  I think $7.99 is overpriced.  I think $6.99 is "fair", and maybe a good deal if we're talking 2007-level accessories and oversized characters.  $8.99 is attrocious though...  Exclusives are so far removed from my collecting mind right now I guess.

I do think sometimes SDCC gets too good an exclusive though...  Something that maybe general release is better.  But a lot of SW stuff got sent there after it failed at regular retail too.  I can't say the same is necessarilly true for other lines but I'd say Indiana JOnes fits that mold only because the line's dead at this point it seems, so I'm just happy to take those when i can get them.

Surprised they've redone the Sky Striker.

Long overdue Techno Viper remake. Though nothing else too exciting from the basic figures, though. Mostly filler until Renegades figures show up. The Blow Torch and Croc Master are especially lazy. I got a 25th Croc Master for $2 at a Marshalls 6 weeks ago.  But there's enough to sustain the line, what with troop builders and all.

Excellent, it looks like the Iron Grenadier comes with the steady gun that was taken out of the destro pack. But he also comes with that terrible rifle from the Cobra Para-Viper, the one with the folding stock and bi-pod.  That mold should disappear.  But, the IG looks basically like Destro, so it's a great army builder.

Temple Guardian Snake Eyes is basically a Storm Shadow repaint, I think.  Terrible, and a waste of a slot.

Steel Brigade rocks.  I'd love to snag a few of them.

The Rock Viper actually looks pretty cool, and I wasn't hot on that figure.

The Viper is really nice and has the missile accessory from the Resolute pack, which is a nice touch.  Again, love to snag a few of them.

Cobra Trooper looks good, if pretty straight forward.

General Hawk is a winner.  Butt-laod of accessories and a nice looking figure to boot.

Crazy Legs is fine, but underwhelming.  Just not interesting.

Blowtorch looks like a repaint, maybe a new piece or two, and some different accessories.

Jungle Bat is kind of cool and comes with Destro's gatling gun and an extra head.  Probably a get.  Looks like mostly a 25th figure, though.

Cobra Commander.  Meh.  He has some cool accessories but I don't really want to buy another CC just for some plastic bits.

Now, the Techno-Viper is interesting.  If you like purple, anyway.  Still, he's kind of cool and I'm sure there are some fans out there.

The Hazard-Viper, though, looks incredible to me.  He's just over the top orange, and crazy looking.  I'll definitely get a couple, just because he's so outrageous.

Anyway, of what's been shown, the must-haves are General Hawk, Steel Brigade (multiple), Cobra Trooper (multiple), Jungle BAT (at least 2), IG (multiple), Viper (multiple) and at least two of the Hazard-Viper.

The Skystriker with Ace looks insane.  I'd love to get this, but I don't know about the price.  I don't really have the space or money to invest in that piece, but if I was going to buy a Jet for my Joe team, that's it.  Ace looks really excellent also.  Much better than the 25th release.  And, I have to say, the Starscream repaint is uber cool.  I could do without the vehicle, but I want that CC w/ Megatron gun.  Hopefully that's one Tunghori or someone will part out on eBay.

The one-man Cobra Osprey-style ship is neat but I can probably pass.

The 12" figures actually look really cool.  Unfortunately, I don't think they'll be using the SA Joe body.  Some of them you can't tell, but the Paratrooper has short sleeves and he's not SA.

Right now, I'm actually more excited for the GI Joe stuff than I am the Star Wars items that have been shown.

Loving what's been shown for the most part. I do not like the idea of Zarana as an SDCC exclusive, but I can see their reasoning. There's a WM here that still has ROC figures at $5- Baroness, pajama Scarlett, and Cover Girl.

I'm gonna be broke.  :o

I've been trying to cut back on the "other" stuff I buy outside of Star Wars, but I'll admit that Joe is making it difficult.  The POC line has actually been pretty nice I think, and this news from Toy Fair sounds good so far too (I haven't seen pics yet).  I always wanted a Skystriker, even as a kid, it sure would be nice to pick up the new one if budget allows.

Word is Zarana is a SDCC exclusive.  ::)

Renegades Firefly was shown, but having a hard time accessing the picture. Snake-Eyes was too, but haven't seen it yet.

Some 30th anniversary figure pics were released.

I think the Sci-Fi figure looks cool, but the neon green paint apps kill it for me. I just can't appreciate a lot of the updates of figures from the 80s. Sci Fi, Crazy Legs, and the Cyber Viper just look too goofy for my tastes.

I think I've said before that I'd probably never buy another Storm Shadow figure, but I think this new one they showed of may pull me in.  It's either from Renegades or the 30th anniversary, not sure, but he looks a lot like his classic ARAH self and has some excellent accessories.  I could see getting him and replacing all previous 25th/ME attempts at the classic version.

I was never a Sci Fi fan, but I kind of dig that figure for some reason.  Probably the same reason I like the look of that Hazard-Viper...it's actually so outrageous that it turns the corner back to cool.

Agreed. This new one is badass.

I really like Stalker, Sci-Fi, the Techno-Viper, Crazylegs, Steel Brigade, and Zarana shown today. Most everything else just looks like weird Frankenjoes, especially the Iron Grenadier.

Wow, so jazzed that we're getting Sci Fi.  He was one of my favorites from that newer generation of Joes on the cartoon, and the figure looks nice.  Agreed on the Storm Shadow.  I didn't think I'd ever want another one, but that one is pretty sweet.  Honestly, I thought I'd be done and happy when the 25th stuff ended, but Hasbro's really been doing some great work with the Joe stuff lately, and it looks like that is going to continue.

In my opinion, the Hasbro GI JOE team kicked the Star Wars team's ass with what we saw at Toy Fair.

Thirded. I about did a backflip when I heard about the Skystriker.

For real... the Cobra Commander Starscream Skystriker exclusive blows away the vintage set of recarded figures... the Joe team showed creativity, the Star Wars team showed greed.

And it goes beyond that of course - the figures look amazing... Hasbro's Joe team has got it figured out.  The Star Wars team is all over the place with good and bad - not nearly the level of consistency.

WOW!  Sci-Fi was one of my faves as a kid - always reminded me of Robocop.  Impressed by just about everything I've seen.  Looks like I picked a good time to cut Star Wars collecting.   :-X

Finally, the 25th line continues with an awesome Sci-Fi, Techno Viper, Zarana, Crazylegs, Skystriker and that new 30th Ann. Storm Shadow.  I hope they squeeze a Night Viper into that 30th lineup.  Really wish they would have done a better job on Steel Brigade; used diferent body.

I love the Hazard Cobra Trooper...  I mean, that's a cool design.  I'll be compelled to pick him up myself, and I'm not even a Joe collector, I just grab one now and again that strike my fancy.  That though?  That's got buy all over it.

I'm equally into the...

Iron Grenadier.  The Steady Gun is cool, but the sheer badass look of the guy, like a walking ball of armor, is really neat.  The only thing that may keep me from pkicking him up is the IG's were at the end of my interest in ARAH.  They just barely made it into my collection.  Like Sci-Fi, who has a very incredible figure as well.

GIJoe really did have a great presentation.  I think Star Wars was great, but G.I. Joe clearly has an all collector year going it seems.  Hats off to them and I hope it keeps going.
