Watto's Junk Yard / My uncle just died....
« on: August 14, 2003, 07:07 PM »
Or at least that's what my grandmother would have had us thinking...

I heard a pounding on the door, sounded like someone trying to break in it was so loud. Went to the door, by the time I got there, grandma was running to the neighbors house already. She doesn't run.

"Grandma! What's wrong?"

"Greg (my uncle) just called! He said "Hi, how are you" and started screaming, and then his phone cut out! OH GOD OH GOD! Get your mother!"

I went to get mom, she came out, grandma started yelling

"SOMETHING HAPPENED TO GREG! He was on the phone and he started screaming! Then the phone cut out"

"Maybe he was just yelling at some kids" (trying to calm her down)

"OH GOD NO! SOMETHING BAD HAS HAPPENED OH GOD NO!"

"Just calm down, we'll go check on him" (A family of firemen and EMTs, but nobody EVER calls 911)

"OH GOD HE WAS SCREAMING OH GOD!"

(Me) "Mom, I'll come with you" and I turn to my neighbor "Can you watch grandma"

(Neighbor) "Rene, why dont you stay here with me"

"OH GOD NO I HAVE TO CHECK MY BABY! SOMETHINGS WRONG OH GOD!"

She and mom hopped in the car, mom told me to call the chief of the fire department (like I said, nobody in this damn family calls 911). I called up the fire chief, explained what happened, and he dispatched the fire trucks, ambulance and contacted the police. As soon as I hang up, the phone rings:

"Adam? Is mom over there?" (Greg is on the phone)

"No, she's on her way out there, She said you started screaming and the phone cut out"

"What? No way. The phone cut out, but I was just talking to her"

"Well, you're going to have a lot of company in a few minutes"

Needless to say, he was PISSED off. He's in his mid-late 40's, but grandma still babies him and tries to treat him like he's 12. She obsesses over him and constantly worries, she's practically turned him into a hypocondriac, always thinking he's sick and needs to go to the hospital. Basically, she's nuts. This little instance really took the cake though.

Other Toy Lines / Scale Figures: How Important is it to You?
« on: July 17, 2003, 11:46 PM »
Well?  ;D

By and far, my biggest pet peeve with toys, almost across the board, has always been scale. It pisses me off to no end to only be able to fit one figure in a cockpit that should hold four, when vehicles look like clown cars when displayed alongside their same-line figure counterparts, accessories that are absolutely absurd (in terms of scale, not counting all other absurdities regarding accessories), etc. I always see pictures of gorgeous dioramas, but they end up looking bad because the vehicles and other items are so poorly scaled and crappy. Which means if you want everything to look nice, you're building EVERYTHING on your own......

Good ol 21st Century Toys' Ultimate Soldier XD line. The line by which all other toys will be judged in my books. After a few minor snaffus, this tiny company was able to make everything in near perfect scale. Figures fit in their cockpits, they had properly scaled accessories, and even properly scaled environmental accessories (buildings, etc). 21st Century Toys; a company a fraction of the size of Hasbro, producing products of unmatched quality, scale, playbility and displayability, and they even managed to keep their prices low (reasonably). So, if a company only a fraction the size of Hasbro can do it, then why the hell cant Habsro and other companies do it? They have better production facilities, can make larger quantities of items, and have larger market reaches, all of which means they could produce an item of similar caliber at the same or lower cost.

It seems all to apparent that the companies which can best well made toys just dont choose to do it. Palisades and 21st Century are both very very small companies, yet they produce some of the most highly detailed and reasonably priced toys available. Palisades Muppets line is unmatched, and very well scaled (although not perfect, its well on the way, and quite "good enough"). These companies could give Hasbro and others a run for their money if they had the same reach. Ultimately, they are only able to reach a handful of stores, and only a couple of chains, which ends up meaning higher costs.

I guess my big point is, all of the "big boys" in the toy industry are perfectly capable of producing scaled toys and in an increasingly collector-oriented market, its something they need to address more quickly and readily or they are going to get beat out by the little guys.

So, how important is scale to you? And what lines do you see as well scaled?

The majority of McFarlane lines seem well scaled, but for the most part lack any kind of other line pieces. It's just figures, not really anything else (for the most part). Even then, they produce some items that end up being way off scale.

The Jim Henson's Muppets line is very well scaled, and while not perfect, to the average fan or collector, its quite good enough. Once again, no vehicles, but there are playsets. They've been scaled quite well.

Ultimate Solider XD. The qunitessential toy line that doesn't get nearly enough face time in the toy industry, which is a very big disapointment. The company faces financial ruin, which means an end for the line. The line is the most perfect toy line available, in terms of scale, authenticity, articulation, accessories, playability and displayability. The only thing I didnt like about this line is that I couldnt afford to collect it all (monetarily, and space wise because of so many repaints).

If your favorite toy line isn't properly scaled, how much more would you spend on it if it was?

Other Toy Lines / RC Microsizers
« on: July 13, 2003, 11:23 PM »
Microsizers

I was at Toys R Us a few days ago, looking for toys and picked one of these up on a whim (a Subaru Impreza).

I have to say, these things are wonderfully addicting, and for what they are, they work incredibly well! Everything is small enough to fit in your pocket, but these little things actually pack quite a punch. They even have intechangeable motors, gears, tires and bodies, for whatever suits your racing needs. Wonderfully complex little gadgets, and they only run about $20.00 for the remote and a complete car! :)

Even cooler, the company that makes them also has the liscence for a couple of my favorite racing games: Auto Modellista for PS2 and Mario Kart! :) For Auto Modellista, they have kits with a remote, 1 chassis and 4 bodies with A.M. artwork. The Mario Kart sets are incredibly cool, including a remote, either Mario or Yoshi on their go cart, and little items from the game, like turtle shells, banana peels and mushrooms.

I'd definately recomend them to anyone, adults and kids alike. They are small enough to keep anywhere, charge very quickly (45 seconds), each charge lasts quite a while (depending on which type of motor you use), anywhere from 5-20 minutes. Something fun to just get out on a whim, play with to pass the time, and put away again.

Watto's Junk Yard / Dead Like Me
« on: July 13, 2003, 01:43 AM »
Anyone watch this new Showtime series? Its actually pretty funny.

Basically, the premise is this: Girl dies, girl meets "undead", who are employeed as grim reapers, girl becomes grim reaper. Grim reapers take souls. Its a comedy (I mean, duh! Come on!). Kind of like what happens after Six Feet Under, but funnier.

And, it has Mandy Patinkon in it

Watto's Junk Yard / COOL! My car imploded!
« on: July 3, 2003, 02:09 PM »
Well, its been approaching the 90's around here for about a week and a half, and I dont have a shady place to park my car. Well, not even thinking about it, I didnt roll my windows down or anything. Well, because of the heat, my car imploded! :) The entire rear window completely busted and was sucked into the car. I dont see how it could possibly be vandalism, but if it was, I want to meet this vandal and shake his hand, because it was pretty cool ;) The entire window completely turned to itty bitty pieces of glass, and spread throughout the whole car. There is glass everywhere, from the dashboard and ac vents, all of the seats, the handles, locks, everywhere....

Watto's Junk Yard / Your Break Up Stories
« on: June 30, 2003, 08:58 PM »
The marriage proposal thread put me into a mood to hear some good break up stories, so let's hear em! The saddest, the funniest, the most cruel, whatever floats your boat.

I guess Ill start:

My last two girlfriends both had similar break ups. Things really weren't peachy, but they were far from horrible, and both girls were seemingly happy (no, I wasn't dating them at the same time). Both times, I just kind of decided one night on a whim, that I was no longer interested. Im definately the kind of person that would prefer to not waste time with pleasantries, so nearly immediately after I made my decision (mind you, some time in the late evening, possibly drunk, possibly perfectly sober, I really dont care to remember), I called them up and basically said "I dont really like you any more, so Im breaking up. Nice talking to you, bye" *click* Both were immediately followed by a call back, basically the girl in hysterics wanting to know what happened. Once again, I explained myself and this time asked that they dont call again, because I would like to go to bed. That was the last time I talked to either of them...

I've never been dumped; every time I had the slightest inkling that she was going to dump me, I simply beat her to the punch. Then again, I've only had four girlfriends over the course of my 24.5 years here on earth. And I couldn't be happier! :)

Modern Trading / Vintage Trade Request
« on: June 28, 2003, 09:11 PM »
I have a carded (unpunched, C9+ by Brian's Toys standards) Return of the Jedi Luke Skywalker with green lightsaber. Im looking for any Ewoks (the cartoon line, not just Ewok figures) figures of the same quality (unpunched/tab still hinged to package, 9 or better). I need any figures except Logray, and would like to trade for any number of figures that is approximate to the value of the Luke figure (I paid $100.00).

Watto's Junk Yard / 28 Days Later
« on: June 27, 2003, 09:50 PM »
No, its not the sequel to that craptastic Sandra Bullock movie...

Just got back from seeing this flick, and it was absolutely fantastic! The gritty feel really added to the intensity of the movie, and there are quite a few jump out of your seat scare scenes. Definately worth the price of admission, I cant wait for it to come out on DVD! :)

72
I have a fairly large carded collection, and as such, it would be a huge pain to ship it, so Im hoping to find someone in or around central Indiana, that might be willing to meet somewhere to purchase my collection. If you're not in the area and are willing to pay all shipping costs (including all packing materials), Ill consider the offer.

All figures are in Star Cases, unless noted otherwise.

Watto's Junk Yard / Gamecube Game Boy Player
« on: June 23, 2003, 09:50 PM »
All hail Super Game Boy! :) I loved it on SNES, and it's updated version for the Cube should be pretty cool.

Just saw over at ebworld.com that they have finally been released, but only in Jet Black?? Anyone have any idea if they will be released in Indigo, or Silver? Or whatever other colors Gamecubes are available in?

Its weird, the Official Nintendo Power guide for Donkey Kong Country on GBA has a picture of the "systems" you can play DKC on, it shows the GBA, GBSP and GCGBP, and all in silver. There is also an auction that shows one in Indigo, but the image appears to be taken from some sort of news/online source as its not a photo of the in hand product.

Watto's Junk Yard / Star Wars Screen Themes
« on: June 23, 2003, 09:35 PM »
Youve probably seen a link to them on Star Wars.com, and I just downloaded the trial along with an image pack (4.50 per set, you get big discounts the more you buy). I must say, the image quality is absolutely stunning especially in digital shots. I also got some classic trilogy pictures, and there are many images I have never seen in my life, stuff like Hoth trench photos with new rebel pictures, and a very cool ROTJ picture featuring Han and Lando talking on some sort of landing platform, around the time of the Endor battle. Even with the old movies, a lot of the shots are pure photographic quality (and I mean SUPERIOR quality), and others are still very much better quality than I've seen for anything on the net. I highly recomend these to everyone!

Other Collectibles / Star Wars Film Cels
« on: June 22, 2003, 11:58 AM »
Anyone else collect the Willitts Designs Star Wars 70mm Collector Films cels? I'm not two away from a complete set, unless I decide to get the Empire Strikes Back Set B. I also have a few miscellaneous cels, like the small set from the TPM VHS set, and a nice set of AOTC IMAX cells :)
