Title: TOY FAIR 2007
Post by: speedermike on December 27, 2006, 08:42 PM
So, is 2007's Toy Fair going to be really good?  Or are all of the figures going to leak the week before making Toy Fair a bit redundant?

I'm hoping to see most, if not all of the the McQuarrie figs.  That's what I'm most excited about this year. I'm also wondering about some video game tie-in stuff that Hasbro was talking about for 07.  I'm wondering if that's happening in the fall...only time will tell!

Any thoughts?

i too am excited about the mcquarrie figures. i also want to see which clone wars figures will be made  ;D . i loved that series and feel up until now its been quite neglected in the basic figure line.

Hasbro keeps implying stuff in Q&A's that will be let loose at Toy Fair, so you never know really...  Last year's TF wasn't stellar though so part of me figures we'll see clearer shots of all of it online first, and that what they have at TF is going to be minimal in general.

Any time to see new figures is great. It can't get here fast enough. I look forward to the vintage figures and the next couple of waves the most. Complete surprises are always good too.

VOTC III or whatever we are calling it is what I am looking forward to most.

And any other OT stuff we have not seen by then as well.

I really hope, though, that the Hasbro reps who set up the display booth take a little more time to pose the figures in a flattering way.  Sometimes it seems like they choose the worst possible way to display these!

I wouldn't count on it...  TF usually gets the schlubs, not the people who actually give a poo on the matter.  At least that's how it's been in recent years anyway.

Maybe somebody can convince them that they will sell more if they are displayed better.  Maybe it would be good for a Q & A question.  I know the VTSC Sand Person went from 2 Stars to 4 Stars after a little work with the outfit.

I think Hasbro realized they took a lot of flak for that stunt last year and even they should be smart enough not to pull that again.  Hopefully.  ::)

Wasn't that a Comic Con thing, where fans would be, I don't think they would waste their limited humor on buyers from Wal Mart, Target etc.  The five or six guys covering the show from various websites or magazines probably won't even rate an acknowledgement at something geared towards retailers.

I hope Hasbro reveals a surprise playset.   Not gonna happen, but I can hope.   :D

I wonder how much we will see this year at Toy Fair.  I'd love to see a surprise wave of figures that we never thought we'd get.  Maybe a battle pack or two of Cantina aliens or harder to find Jedi.  I'd love that.

 ;)

Maybe we will get to see the figures from better angles and non "promo" shots.  Maybe they will have the snowtroopers skirt fixed by then.

I'd also like to see Luke Ceremonial Attire a little closer.

I would assume they will just be showing whatever is supposed to be out now until summer.  Then wait for SDCC to preview the rest of the year's stuff.  I am thinking they will show the first 4 waves and the Vintage figures.  Plus, I really want to see Hermi Odle and he's in wave 5.  So, they will stop at that wave and make me wait that much longer.

Does Sideshow also come to this event?

They don't. This event isn't for us. It's for the retailers and I can't imagine them scouring the internet each day for new images. :P

I hope we'll see the new mid-sized ships at the very least.

As a midwesterner who has been there once (by myself, trying to get to a wedding) take it from me- it will be like nothing you have ever seen :o
If you are in the subways, look for piles of garbage on the platforms on the other side of the tracks, you'll see rats the size and shape of basketballs milling about. Call them womp-rats, even though they are a bit smaller than 2 meters.
And don't be surprised (or even react) if someone next to you starts screaming and yelling- it is most likely due to internal stimuli. I watched a woman in a burger king go off like ****** yelling and flailing about being next in line and getting passed up- 50 people didn't even flinch, and I was one of the only ones even watching.

Have a great time, looking forward to the pictures!

edit: the ******* was actually the word f-i-r-e-c-r-a-c-k-e-r  - too close for comfort?  ;)

SSG has some initial pics...

Thoughts en brief;

Vehicles:
V-Wing looks awesome, I'll probably pick up three. Two for Republic purposes, one to make into an Imperial Training Vehicle.
The Sith Infiltrator's paint application looks sharp. Neat vehicle.

Basic Figures:
Overall, they look rather sharp. I'm a bit disappointed by Jedi Luke's oversized joints, but the headsculpt is fantastic. The Concept Figures have me the most excited. The Chewbacca especially ... I'll take 10!  :P

VOTC:
Stronger offerings than last year's, IMO. Hopefully pics of IG-88 and the Snowtrooper are forthcoming.

BIGGS NEEDS A CAPE!!! :'(

Concept Vader has Two Helmets!! ;D

Actually, McVader is the weakest of the concept figures so far. It looks like Hasbro didin't want to make him too strange looking.  In the classic Luke/Vader McQuarrie painting, Vader's leather suit does not have the textured "piping" on it.   It's smooth and graceful. Hmm.  However, the rest of the 2007 stuff is amazing!

Click the button to check out our full Hasbro Gallery of images.

The Hasbro Gallery is pretty well complete...  Lots of images for your perusing guys/gals.  Make sure and check out the latest story on our front page too for a little tidbit I don't think you're going to find elsewhere. ;)

The 90+ images are only a fraction of what was actually taken by our staffers Paul and Rob out in the fray.  It's only day one and for me I really like what our guys did.  Lots of images and the detail is simply remarkable in the shots.

What a convention too...  Hasbro's out of the gate with a great assortment of new stuff, and stuff we'd seen.  Who couldn't want more images of the stuff we'd seen though!?

The V-Wing is a must-have for me...  Great ship.  The Vintage Wave looks outstanding and there's another mail-away to sweeten the pot a bit.  The basic figures are amazing and while I know EU isn't everyone's cup of tea, I'm totally stoked for the Force Unleashed blitz.  I love those figures guys, I don't know about you all.

No comic sets shown, I'm surprised.  Great stuff though that we did see.

Wow, I didn't think it was possible with the new card style, but we are getting some HUGE awesome pack-ins with some of these figures...

- Upass-Stay's Drum
- Luke's Vaporator

Since you poor Yankees haven't got them in hand (for the most part) yet, allow me to suggest the bubbles are still quite sizable (NOT as big as Saga) and there's room in the back for some neat stuff.  They pulled the stands, as I'm sure you're aware, so there's some space yet.

Yeah the pack-ins really "ease" my opinion on articulation when it doesn't satisfy on some of those...  Luke may lack knees, but I gotta say, even my articulation addiction has to give it up to getting a friggin' moisture vaporator.  Hell I may buy a 2nd or 3rd just for the vaporator..

If Hasbro's delivering figures that give you that much bang for your buck, I'll expect a lot less criticism out of my writing here.  A big gripe for me in '06 was price but they seemingly are moving things up a notch.  I hope it's a permanent fixture in the line.

And if anyone's curious, the only figure that was underwhelming me from these early photos is Biggs (and his Pilot version) for the most part...  Lava Miner to some extent.  Not much I'm not looking forward to right now though.

Early impressions:

Where the hell is Hermi?

Moisture Vaparator: Holy ****.  Surpasses my wildest expectations.

McQ Vader: Love the two helmets, but a little lackluster compared to the others.

Comic Packs: MIA?

Force Unleashed: The female Imperial Officer is great, but I have to draw the line somewhere.

Hoth Han: Two heads (plus a blah looking helmet/headwrap thing) = awesome.

Biggs: No cape = no dice.

I'm really liking what I'm seeing from the basic 3-3/4" lines and the vehicles (I may actually pick up a vehicle this year, which I haven't done in the past 2-3 years).  The VTAC line looks out-of-this-world, and the Force Unleashed stuff is going to be a great little subset to display.  But, what the heck is this (http://www.rebelscum.com/tf2007/HasbroTF/image11.asp) from the SW/Transformers line?  That's supposed to be an AT-AT?  It better not try to hump my leg with that thing!!

Guys I think somebody was asking Depriest about the "Robe" portion of Jedi Luke's outfit.  He said it was not intended to be removable.  I have a shot on my camera of him messing with it, but it is not really clear.

Definately not a kit bash, it has ball jointed shoulders and elbows, swivel ankles and ball socket head.  I want an extra to make into a decent Endor luke.

To me it's better than the 2004 Jabba's Palace Luke Skywalker figure, but not as good as the 1996 Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker.  Of course, both are better than the 2003 Death Star II Luke Skywalker.  What I would really like is if they could somehow take the articulation from the 2007 Jabba's Palace Luke Skywalker, and the accessories from the 2004 Jabba's Palace Luke Skywalker, and sort of make a new 2008 Death Star II Luke Skywalker.  Then you would have the ultimate Luke Skywalker from the film "Return of the Jedi," and that would be better than all previous versions of Luke Skywalker from the "Return of the Jedi" film.  What I'm talking about is the 1996 Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker, the 2003 Death Star II Luke Skywalker, the 2004 Jabba's Palace Luke Skywalker, and the 2007 Jabba's Palace Luke Skywalker.

Luke Skywalker.

Perhaps...  I'm shocked they're keeping the Transformers going since those seem to sit, by me at least, but they keep on rolling along...  That AT-AT is just hideous though.  The sacrifices made for the function of the toy really killed that toy.

First off, great coverage here at JD.  Thanks for all the hard work guys.  Even though we got some "advance previews" of some of these figures with the leaks over the last couple weeks, it still turned out to be a great Toy Fair.  This looks like it could be one of Hasbro's strongest years yet, with all the great figures in the basic line (with few to no straight repacks so far), the top-notch vintage lineup, and the surprisingly cool "Force Unleashed" figures.  I'm usually far from a completist, but looking at the lineups so far this year, it looks like I'll be buying at least one of everything that's been announced.  Its going to be an expensive year, that's for sure.

I just saw pictures of the new carded Jabba's Palace Luke Skywalker figure.  The figure looks like a combination of the 2004 Jabba's Palace Luke Skywalker and the 2006 Endor Luke Skywalker figures.  Also, just like I had hoped, the 2007 Jabba's Palace Luke Skywalker comes with a lightsaber.

Your concerns are duly noted.  We at Hasbro strive to ensure our collector base is happy (but not too happy) and while we like your plan, we would like to suggest that achieving what you are after will likely take two, maybe three more iterations before we get it right.  Please expect to see the desired Luke figure in approximately 2012 on our then to be released fuschia and chartreuse Force cardbacks.
Sincerely,
D. DePriest, Hasbro

Fuschia and chartreuse?  Mmm, sassy.

But seriously, 2007 looks to be a promising year.  At least there looks to be a lot more hits than misses, unlike 2006.
