I realize I may see like a Johnny Come Lately but I gotta throw out some kudos to the good ole alma mater who is sitting at 6-0
Probably the biggest 2 game stretch in my lifetime for the Mighty Minnesota Golden Gophers is coming up starting tonight with Michigan in town and Michigan State in town next week
It shall be a wonderful night and the dome might actually be sold out
They are talking riots here if they win as well which is asinine :-\
GO GOPHERS!
-
BTW up for grabs tonight is the Little Brown Jug, the longest running trophy game in College Football
(http://www.pub.umich.edu/daily/1998/nov/11-02-98/photos/wtzfbcswordjug103198.gif)
The rivalry has been very Michigan lopsided but the Gophs are acutally favored tonight, we shall see!

Oh suuuuure, Mr. Bandwagon! ::) :-*
UCLA got off to a horrid start this season, and as such my interest in college football right now has quickly diminished to virtually nil... See you guys next year though! :P
And best of luck to "Scott's team" against Michigan... ;)
-
Well I am a big Badgers fan have been for many years.., any way Scott the AX is a much better trophy than the jug even if the jug is older ;)
I didn't realize your team was 6-0 congrats- much like the Packers the Badgers droped a should have win already this year but I am hoping that they play like they should.
-
I think the Backyard Bowl is this weekend, UNC and East Carolina.
I don't think anyone cares, especially since the best thing East Carolina ever yielded was Jeff Blake.
UNC on the other hand had a handful of breakout stars, Julius Peppers for one.
-
What a weekend for college football- lots of great games upsets- I am impressed with my Badgers nocking off Ohio State- also have to ad a big WTF for the Renyolds choking incident with Sorgi in the game. great game none the less. Did anyone else see that replay?
-
Yeah that was awful, I am glad the Badgers won...(you won't hear me say that again)
I won't comment on what happened Friday Night, let's just say the Little Brown Jug is still in Michigan :-[
-
My NIU Huskies are still undefeated (6-0) and are ranked 16th in the Coaches Poll! ;D
(http://www.niu.edu/newimages/huskies.gif)
-
At this point I am interested in seeing if Norhtern Illinois can go unbeaten and possibly get into a bowl game of some sort. I think they need to stay unbeaten just to have a shot. As of right now they are ranked #12. It's funny to see them up there instead of Illinois or Northwestern.
-
Northern Illinois is ranked #10 in the BCS standings! That is the first time in NIU school history for that to happen to them. That's my old school baby! ;D

-
For the record - Crimson Tide really sucks.
-
After 2 tough losses the Gophers rebounded to crush the worst team in the Big 10 in Illinois, they finish with Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin all of which they probably should win (except Iowa will be tough)
10-2 would be an awesome year, might get them into a New Year's Day Bowl Game and be a huge boost to this once proud Football school
All Time Championships
Notre Dame 13
Alabama 10
Michigan 9
Ohio St. 7
Oklahoma 7
Southern California 7
Minnesota 6
Miami 5
Nebraska 5
Penn St. 4
Pittsburgh 4
-
For my pal Wayne...your team won last weekend, it is my team's turn to win this weekend
Time to bring the axe back home
(http://www.startribune.com/stonline/images/news17/1gophkey1125.l.jpg)
-
I forgot about that Scott- I have to make sure I watch it. With the Badgers play as of late I think you guys have the axe this year. The badgers really fell flat and Minnesota has been pretty good. Either way I am atleast hoping for a good performance.
-
The Axe is back in Minnesota!
9-2 baby, Iowa you are next, time for some payback for your fans stealing the Metrodome's Goal Posts last year!
-
Yes you got the Axe back but I will say the game was far better than I thought it would be. Next year its gotta come back to WI ;D

We're headed to the Alamo bowl, but I can't complain. We had a decent season after last year's debacle, and it should be a good matchup with Michigan State. Hopefully we'll play well. Kind of a strange year in BCS land again, with USC kind of getting the screwgie. Of course, any of those three teams (OU, LSU, USC) would have a gripe if they weren't in the title game. At least USC has a chance at a share of the title. That system just doesn't quite work right :).
-
See whenever I see USC I think of my team University Of South Carolina ;)
OCB,might just join.
-
Funny, but I wanted to comment here on the BCS snafu yesterday, but didn't remember us having a college football thread, so I passed on it (and yes - I do realize we have a search box up top...)
Sun Bowl Baby!
Silicon Valley Football Classic Baby!!! 8) ;D :D :) :P ??? ::) :-[ :( :'( >:( :-X
We were lucky to even get in there. But I gotta say that So Cal is on fire right now with all the people pissed off about USC getting left out of the "National Championship" game. They're our hated rivals at UCLA, so it was somewhat amusing, though I'll admit it doesn't seem fair or right. After OU got B'slapped on their home turf by K-State on Saturday evening, their sorry asses should just take a hike to a lesser Bowl.
I still think some multi-millionaire somewhere should just line up a neutral stadium somewhere, contact representatives for USC (assuming they beat Michigan) and the winner of the OU/LSU game, and just set up a non-NCAA sanctioned (real) championship game to see who the true Champion really is. Like Don King or someone... What's he been up to lately? This would be a good way for him to get his name back in the spotlight. Mills Lane could do the opening coin flip, followed by the proverbial Let's get it on! It'd be perfect.
Why not?
-
I don't follow NCAA football that much (aside from NC State, and QB Phillip Rivers is getting the Heisman shaft), but I think it's ludicrous that a team that loses their conference championship game, in blowout fashion, and holds the same record as the other Top 2 teams, still gets to play for the National Championship while the No. 1 team in the 2 other polls that actually matter, plays 2nd fiddle.
"Second fiddle"? No, not really. If USC wins in the Rose Bowl, they'll be guaranteed a share of the championship with whoever wins the OU/LSU game, so it's not like they're totally ass-out here.
There are definite problems with the current system, but there's not a whole lot to do when there's three one-loss teams--someone's going to get left out. (And they don't all have identical records--OU and LSU are both 12-1, and USC is 11-1).
When that happens, what other option do you have than to look at the quality wins and losses that each of the teams had?
Looking at those, OU deserves to be in the title game just as much as anybody.
OU: Quality wins over Texas (5) and Oklahoma St. (22)
Lost to Kansas State (10)
LSU: Quality wins over Georgia (11) (twice) and Mississippi (18)
Lost to Florida (17)
USC: Quality win over Washington State (14)
Lost to California (unranked)
Now, I'm for a playoff system, too, but that doesn't matter. Doesn't matter that OU lost on the last day of the year, just like it doesn't matter that USC lost two and a half months ago. What does matter is that both OU and LSU have better wins than USC, and better losses, too.
My new favorite team, by the way, is Michigan.
GO BLUE!!! 8)
-
and the NASCAR points system. Where else can you win 9 races. 20% of the schedule, in 1 season, and still finish in 5th place overall, with the 1st place winner winning only 1 race all year.
Matt Kenseth won by being consistent. 9 wins or not, Newman had a few DNFs and didn't run as consistent as Kenseth did all year. Now don't get me wrong, Newman is a great driver, but if he wasn't racing "balls to the wall" all the time, he would have finished higher (and quite possibly won the Championship).
I think the Championship game should be LSU vs. USC, but only because they both won their respective conferences. I'll be rooting for LSU over OSU, but can't root for USC seeing as they're playing the Wolverines. I've been a huge blue fan since I can remember.
-
EV.1 GalleryFurniture Playing Before New Years Eve, but at least after Christmas Day Houston Bowl!!!!
I am not a big BCS supporter myself, I would like a playoff, but the main problem with that is, that Texas Tech would never get a bowl game then. So I am torn. I want a definative National Champion in College Football, but I don't want to sacrifice any possible Bowl Money. Not that I get any of it.
But it you did a tournament like in Basketball, you would end up needing to have just 10 game regular seasons or starting the season in Early August and I think it starts too early already. (Of course I don't feel that way in July, when I am jonesing for Football)
-
Thanks for the NASCAR commentary in the college football thread. (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
-
There was a NASCAR thread around here to somewhere
I've seen some pretty cute stuff over at ESPN on the whole Computerized BCS, the fact that OU and LSU have beaten so many quality teams means to me they made the right call. I love it that this system is still messed up though "The BCS will fix all of those problems"
-
I do want to respond to something JediMAC said over at Galactic Hunter, in the "GEAUX TIGERS!!!!" thread, if that makes any sense.
After OU's shalacking at the hands of Kansas State last night, at home no less
For the record, while OU was the "home" team in last Saturday's game, don't be fooled--they weren't playing in the cozy confines of Owen Field in Norman, Oklahoma.
No sir, they were playing up in Kansas City, at Arrowhead Stadium, where the NFL's Chiefs play.
Now, I have no idea what percentage of fans were rooting for OU, and what percentage were rooting for Kansas State, but I'd imagine a good majority of them were rooting for the Wildcats.
Doesn't change much, really--K-State still played lights out, and kicked OU's ass--but the Sooners didn't lose here at home. It was a road game without being a "road game".
-

Oh... You're right. I didn't realize that at all! I thought they were at OU. I was mostly watching the LSU game, with the OU game going on at the other side of the bar, and just noted that they were "home" and that Oklahoma was written in the end zone.
That indeed does make a pretty big difference in my eyes then. Still a terrible loss, and they got dominated throughout. But if it wasn't AT OU, then that's not nearly as bad as I thought... Thanks for the clarification on that Matt! Consider me informed now. Still a crappy way to go into the National Championship game though. Most of the polls I've seen in the last few days indicate the majority of people would prefer to see USC in the Title game over either of the other schools.
Oh well. UCLA fans continue to chuckle quietly in the background... ;)

Gaylord. . . Focker?
Your name's Gay Focker?

Sorry.
The Gaylord family practically owns Oklahoma City.
I'd puke all over them, if given the chance.

10-3...Beat some Ducks from Oregon today on a late FG...most wins since 1906...
DAMN Them losing to Michigan! The Gophers might have been 12-1 right now but they blew it. Most of the team is back and I think they have a legitimate shot at breaking the Top 10 next year.
M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A, MINNESOTA, MINNESOTA, Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay GOPHERS!

Ugh. Kansas State is down 21-7 to The Ohio State University, heading into halftime.
Man. . . Pretty much every team I've wanted to win (or, needed to win, in Michigan's case) has lost so far.
The Big XII has sucked, sucked, sucked up to this point. Only Texas Tech and Nebraska have won, while Kansas, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma State have lost, and Kansas State is losing. Hopefully OU will be able to redeem themselves (and the conference) on Sunday night--should be a good game.
Hats off to USC--they certainly deserve their share of the championship. They looked great against Michigan last night.
Oh, and go Tulsa Golden Hurricane tomorrow against Georgia Tech. You always want your state teams to win.

HUMANITARIAN BOWL

Who are you cheering for tonight Virex aka Warlord
-
Well, the way the bowl season has gone for me so far this year, I should probably be rooting for the Tigers. . .
(I do want to honestly say that besides the two Big XII schools who have won their games, the only other team I was going for who wound up winning was. . . The Minnesota Golden Gophers. And yes, I was rooting for them simply because they're your team, Scott.
I love you. :-* )
-
Hey, congratulations to the Oklahoma Sooners for totally suckin' balls during tonight's game. Nobody sucked it better.

White played like absolute Horse Manure, that was awful. Sorry Virex...hey at least Texas still sucks though right???

Thanks, OCB. Hope my "questionable language" hasn't offended any of you fellas.
White played like absolute Horse Manure, that was awful. Sorry Virex...
Yeah, he sucked, two interceptions. And the offensive line sucked a little bit too, way too much pressure on him. I was thinking, in the second half, they almost should have put in their second-string QB to get some momentum going. How crazy would that have been, to bench a Heisman winner?
Defense can't do it all, guys. . .
hey at least Texas still sucks though right???
That almost implies that there have been times where Texas hasn't sucked, which, of course, is not the case.
We'll always have 65-13. We'll always have 65-13. . .
-
Virex,
As a hater of the Orange, you might like to hear a RUMOR that was on Sportstalk on the way home...
The UT Football staff has been released. I mean from the TOP DOWN. I don't know if it is true...and I guess this news would really better be in the CF 2004 forum, but oh well.
I like it when they get a new coach, it means that Tech can beat them in Austin.
-
Meanwhile.....we're still all waiting for our new coach, while many of the rest of you are probably laughing at us. Football is huge here in Nebraska, since we don't have any pro sports.....you wouldn't believe how pretty much every night this week the coaching search is one of the "top stories" on all the news stations. The latest interviewees as of yesterday....Interim Head Coach Bo Pelini, Co-Head Coach Turner Gill, and former Raiders' head man Bill Callahan. Much of the state is pulling for Pelini, but it hasn't sounded real promising so far.
-
As many of you have probably seen/heard, we hired former Oakland Raiders coach Bill Callahan as the next head man of Husker football. Although I sure didn't expect this guy to be our next coach when Solich was fired, hopefully it will be good for the team. He is bringing in a West Coast offense, so it will be an adjustment for the Husker faithful getting used to something new. Change can be good though. Unfortunately, we heard today that only two of the assistants would be kept on the staff (not surprisingly), but sad to see many long time coaches (and some new) leaving the program. Husker football is about all we have for sports around here, so we really get to know all the coaches and players pretty well. Hopefully we can get the ship righted now, and not go through the staff changes every year.
-
As long as he doesn't call his football team dumb, it should probably work out.
-
;)
