Watto's Junk Yard / Home-Based Business?
« on: July 29, 2003, 01:49 PM »
I've been very skeptical of these things, but I was curious how many people here participate in home-based businesses.  This is one I found on Global Online Systems.  I'm sure most of these are scams, but I'm curious if anyone has had any success doing something like this.

I never knew any of the SOTE carded figures could go for so much money!   :o

Toy Reviews / Saga TIE Fighter
« on: July 25, 2003, 05:21 PM »
I don't own the new Saga TIE Fighter, but I read this review over at the SWCCM.  I think the review was done pretty nicely.

I just received my SAGA TIE Fighter from KB in the mail today, so they should be arriving all over the nation's mailboxes soon. I was a bit unhappy with the packaging job done by KB, they threw the TIE box into packing box that was twice as big but only filled it with ONE air pillow. For all you minty fresh box collectors that wont go well for you, many dings on the TIE's box, as well as several shipping stickers placed their by KB, no clue why that was done.

The packaging for the TIE itself is pretty nice, it's pretty much shaped like the TIE, with a diorama insert on the inside. This insert though really doesn't do a lot of good, its actually a picture of the trench run in ANH... The TIE itself is your pretty standard run since 78, a bit more detailing than the POTF2 model but of course its the back of the pod that makes the difference. A nice new sculpt that really looks like the pod of the TIE, though I instinctively went to grasp the battery cover that wasn't there. The TIE's box says there is battle damage on this guy, but I don't see any such paint ops, looks like they decided to skip that idea. The pod's interior has a nice new sticker layout, looks a bit more techie-realistic. My only complaint really about the TIE itself (other than the dimensions of the wings, duh  ) is that the paint job done on the front laser cannons is off, the right cannon has a lot more red than the left, looks a bit off, but I can live with it. The TIE Pilot is the same as that with the Bomber/Interceptor and makes for another great entry into the Imperial Navy, perhaps one day his articulated knees will prove to be useful.

Overall on a scale of 1 (Cruisemissile Trooper) to 10 (Imperial Shuttle/FX X-Wing) I give the new SAGA TIE Fighter a 6, well worth the money, but still not the definitive TIE Fighter.

This is something you don't see too often... a Blue Snaggletooth still in it's original Kenner baggie.  If I had cash right now I would definitely be bidding on this.

Dale, are you going to start bidding on this?

Watto's Junk Yard / Saddam's Two Sons Killed in U.S. Raid
« on: July 22, 2003, 06:06 PM »
Normally I wouldn't start a thread relating to politics or war, but this one is a must.  Saddam's two sons were killed today by U.S. forces.  Next up... Saddam himself.  Here's the story from the Associated Press...

Saddam's Two Sons Killed in U.S. Raid

By SARMAD JALAL, Associated Press Writer

MOSUL, Iraq - Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s sons Odai and Qusai were killed in a six-hour firefight Tuesday when U.S. forces, acting on a tip from an Iraqi informant, surrounded and then stormed a palatial villa in this northern Iraqi city, a senior American general said.

Four coalition soldiers were wounded and two other Iraqis were killed in the raid, but Saddam was not among them. The house belonged to one of Saddam's cousins, a key tribal leader in the region.

"We are certain that Odai and Qusai were killed today," said Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez told reporters in Baghdad. "The bodies were in such a condition where you could identify them."

The deaths of the sons could have a major impact on the Iraqi resistance, which has been mounting a dozen attacks a day against U.S. occupation troops. The guerrillas are thought to be former military officers and Baath Party leaders loyal to Saddam and his family especially the sons, who played primary roles in the military and feared security services.

After the firefight in Mosul, about 1,000 people gathered outside the smoldering villa, some expressing delight, others cursing the Americans.

Hours later, gunfire erupted throughout Baghdad, making travel in the capital very dangerous. The shooting was believed to be celebratory as news spread of the sons' deaths.

"It's probably very appropriate that they would be celebrating about now," Sanchez said.

Both Odai (pronounced oh-DEYE) and Qusai (pronounced koh-SEYE) ranked second only to their father in the deposed regime. They were Nos. 2 and 3 on the U.S. list of 55 top former Iraqi officials wanted by Washington. The United States had offered a $25 million reward for information leading to Saddam's capture and $15 million each for his sons.

In Washington, L. Paul Bremer, Iraq (news - web sites)'s top civilian administrator, said the deaths of Saddam's sons "certainly is good news for the Iraqi people."

"This will contribute significantly to reducing attacks on coalition soldiers," said Ahmad Chalabi, a delegate from Iraq's Governing Council, speaking at the United Nations (news - web sites).

Sanchez said he thought the security situation now would improve.

"I believe very firmly this will have an effect. This will prove to the Iraqi people that these two members of the Iraqi regime will never come to power again," the general said.

Throughout the day, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld personally briefed President Bush (news - web sites) about the assault.

The gunfight in Mosul broke out after soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division surrounded the stone, columned villa.

When soldiers approached the building, gunmen inside opened fire with small arms. The "suspects barricaded themselves in the house" and "resisted fiercely," Sanchez said.

"They died in a fierce gunbattle," he added.

Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division were working on a tip from an Iraqi informant Monday night that the sons were in the house, he said.

Asked if the United States would pay the $15 million rewards, Sanchez said: "I would expect that it probably will happen."

According to witnesses, a small force of American soldiers went to the house about 9 a.m. and asked permission to search it. The occupants refused, and the patrol withdrew until about 10 a.m., when 100 more soldiers arrived in 25 vehicles.

The Americans opened fire and took fierce return fire from inside the home, the witnesses said. Kiowa helicopters then shot rockets into the villa.

The building, in the al-Falah neighborhood, was left charred and smoldering, its high facade riddled with gaping holes from bullets and heavy weaponry.

The interior of the house was destroyed and two adjacent homes were badly damaged.

Some Mosul civilians appeared to have been caught in the crossfire. It was not known how many people were injured, but several were taken to a hospital.

Once the fighting died down, Iraqi police came to help the Americans search the building.

The soldiers removed four bodies and did not let photographers take pictures.

The other two bodies were tentatively identified as that of a bodyguard and a teen-ager, U.S. officials said. The teen may have been a son of Qusai, they said.

Experts conducted DNA tests after the bodies were flown from Mosul to another location, officials said. Sanchez would not answer whether DNA tests were positive for Saddam's sons, saying "we've used multiple, multiple sources to identify the individuals."

Qusai was probably intended as Saddam's successor, according to U.S. intelligence officials. He ran much of Iraq's security apparatus, controlling several militias, internal security services and the military forces of the once-vaunted Republican Guard.

He was described as quiet and level-headed, particularly compared to Odai, his elder brother, who had a reputation for brutality and flamboyance. Odai controlled Saddam's Fedayeen, the paramilitary force that fought U.S. troops during the war; many of its survivors are thought to be part of the guerrilla campaign in Iraq.

Odai also controlled information and propaganda in Saddam's Iraq, and was chairman of the country's Olympic committee.

Saddam has a third, younger son, according to some reports, and three daughters. All kept a low profile in his regime.

Mosul, a city 240 miles northwest of Baghdad that housed Iraqi army bases, is outside the so-called "Sunni Triangle" in central Iraq home to much of the remaining support for Saddam, a Sunni Muslim who used his Baathist Party to oppress the country's Shiite majority.

The triangle is also a center of anti-American resistance: In the latest attack, Tuesday, a U.S. soldier was killed and another wounded in an ambush along a dangerous road north of Baghdad. His death brought to 153 the number of U.S. troops killed in action since the March 20 start of war, six more than during the 1991 Gulf War (news - web sites).

The U.S. Central Command said the attackers used rocket-propelled grenades and small arms in the assault staged along the road between Balad, 50 miles north of Baghdad, and Ramadi, 60 miles west of the capital.

Twice during the war, information on Saddam's whereabouts was deemed solid enough that an airstrike was sent to kill him. But despite optimistic statements in the hours after each raid, U.S. officials now believe he is alive.

Asked at Tuesday's news conference if he had any idea where is, Sanchez replied: "We remain focused on finding, fixing, killing or capturing all members of the high-value target list."

Toy Reviews / Droid Factory R2 Review!!!
« on: July 17, 2003, 09:18 PM »
And here it is, my 2nd review is up and running for in an official capacity...

Sorry for the delay...  Just a mix of bad timing with everyone enjoying their summers, and me starting right at that time, so no big deal and we're on track now. :)

R2 was something to behold...  Basically he's one of the reasons I'm questioning my "completist" behaviors...  The figure is hardly up to par with any other astromech in the line...  Yes, even the loathesome R5-D4 from POTF2 is at least superior enough to be a nice display piece.

This R2 just doesn't cut the mustard...  And ya know, he's the first 2003 figure I've noticed as a "pegwarmer" of any sort...  How's that for a kick between his non-poseable legs!?!?!

Anyway, please read the review and share your thoughts on this...  "interesting" decision by Hasbro.

Watto's Junk Yard / What cellular service do you use?
« on: July 14, 2003, 01:04 AM »
So who's your cellular provider?  I originally used Primeco, switched over to Sprint PCS, and then went back to Primeco.  Well, Primeco is now called US Cellular, and their service is great!  I get 300 anytime minutes (which is plenty for me) for $29.99/month, and it also includes free long distance.  I did get screwed on a roaming charge recently, but that's life I guess.

Do you even have a cell phone?  I don't know what I would do without mine, because I use it all the time.  Plus the "roadside assistance" I pay for ($3/month) has helped me a few times when I really needed the help.  I don't go anywhere without my cell phone.

Modern Classifieds / Snowtroopers Needed!

I'm looking for a few of the newer Stormtroopers to add to my collection.  I would like at least one MOMC, and then some that are either openers or are already loose.  I would like to trade for them since I'm low on funds at the moment, so check out my trade list.  Thanks!

Watto's Junk Yard / Any Members of the 501st Here?
« on: July 13, 2003, 03:20 PM »
Are there any members of the 501st Legion?  I went to a local prop/replica party yesterday, and met a bunch of guys/gals who are part of the Midwest Garrison of the 501st.  I'm VERY MUCH interested in acquiring my own Stormtrooper armor someday... hopefully by the end of this year.

So, I was just curious if any of our JediDefender members were part of the 501st.  If you're part of the 501st, please share your experiences with us.  If you have photos online, please give us the URL so we can check it out.  Thanks everyone!

Watto's Junk Yard / Twist Ties... I Hate 'Em!
« on: July 10, 2003, 07:53 PM »

How many people here hate those stupid twist ties that are in Star Wars packaging?  Why in the world do they have to be used?  I understand that sometimes they're used to keep the figures in a specific pose, but do they really have to be used so extensively?  I mean, the Saga X-Wing Fighter had anywhere between 10-15 of those twist ties... that's just way too many if you ask me.

So, what's your take on twist ties that are used in Star Wars packaging (and any other toy lines if they're used)?

Clone Wars '03-'05 / Jedi Starfighter
« on: July 9, 2003, 11:04 PM »
I must tell you all that I have the most awesome wife!  She came home today with two brand new items for me.  One of them was the Destroyer Droid Battle Launcher, but the other item she got me was the newly painted Clone Wars Jedi Starfighter!  I haven't taken it out of the box (which is something I might end up doing), but the box design is sweet!  I don't care if this is the exact same ship from the Saga line, because the paint job on this is incredible.  I really like that "blue/aqua" color on it.  Looks very sharp.  Here are links to the pictures of my brand new Jedi Starfighter...
