Title: The SW Saga on Television
Post by: Brian on October 19, 2005, 02:03 PM
According to a couple (http://www.tvweek.com/news.cms?newsId=8755) of sources (http://www.tvguide.com/News/Entertainment/default.htm?rmDate=10192005) it sounds as if Spike TV has acquired the rights to air all six of the Star Wars movies.  It reportedly cost them about $65 to $70 million for a six year deal, besting the bids of USA, TNT, TBS, and Sci Fi.  They will have the network premiere of ROTS as well, I believe in 2008.

Just announced - SPIKE TV will be getting all six SW films.  Is this good or bad??

I think this could be a good thing. Spike TV has done a good job with movies before. If they bought it for that much, you know they are going to try to get their moneys worth by showing them all the time  ;D It also said in the article that they would have stunts and marathons to promote the films and raise Nielsen ratings, so it will be cool to see all the stuff they do for it. Maybe by showing it on television more than it is shown now, new people flipping through the channels will see it and become addicted. ;D

Wow, where did they get the cash to pull that stunt?

It's fine by me, I don't watch movies on TV because I can't stand full frame and commercials.

I just hope they don't do the stupid casino schtick between commercial breaks...

Boy, are they going to be suprised that the Enterprise and the Federation are not in any of the films.

When I was a kid, this would have been a VERY big deal.  But now we're lucky enough to have the wonder that is called the DVD, so I (will) own all the movies.  I just don't watch movies on TV anymore - I can't stand commercials.

Very good thought here Jesse.  I remember when I was a kid getting quite psyched when any of the OT was going to be shown on TV.  Back then we'd even tape movies off of TV.  I still find it neat when my favorite movies are on TV, and will watch them from time to time...but more often than not we find ourselves saying "if we want to watch this, let's just put the DVD in" to avoid commercials, full screen, and cuts/edits.  Still, nice to hear the Saga will all be on TV together...and in one place.

Yeah, but that stuff seems to be happening all the time lately.
Tbs just got the whole LOTR trilogy to air sometime.

I've liked having the SW movies on tv every Sunday night recently. It's a refreshing choice from the usual crap on Sundays.

The only thing I really hate, though, is that it seems every commercial break on Spike has an advertisement of some sort for UFC. Like anyone needs to see that crap.

Anyone catch the new, "There is much to be learned" commercials on Spike during their airing of the saga this past week/weekend?

The Ewok one still has me laughing every time I see it...  Vader's predictable but pretty funny, especially the last bit with the guy charging and the other guy saying, "I wouldn't do that", but the Ewok one is just downright hysterical.

When that first came on I was half-paying attention and didn't know what it was.  I thought it was just a little bear thing...  I felt embarassed I didn't realize what it was supposed to be till the music kicked in.

I saw the Ewok one a couple times, and like you, it always has me laughing as well.  I don't think I've seen any of the other new ones yet though.

Just as an update, but Spike TV is airing the entire Saga this week (starting last night) as part of their Thanksgiving programming.  TPM was on last night (re-aired this afternoon), AOTC tonight (again, re-aired the next afternoon), ROTS tomorrow night - then a couple of days break and ANH on Friday, ESB on Saturday, and ROTJ on Sunday.  Still always enjoy catching them when they are on TV, even though I could put the DVDs in at any time.

Thanks Brian.

Between that and the Malevolence storyline on CN this Friday, that's a lotta SW fun.

I was going through our DVR, and I noticed that next weekend they are showing the entire Star Wars saga on MTV of all places.  It looks like it will be TPM/AOTC on Saturday, ROTS and ANH on Sunday, and Empire/ROTJ on Monday.  I think that MTV is under the same "umbrella" as Spike as being owned by the same company/etc., but I was sort of surprised to see them being shown on MTV.
