Title: Walmart "Discover the Force" TPM3D Battle Packs
Post by: Jayson on January 20, 2012, 09:53 AM
Walmart has available the 2 exclusive battle packs on their site: Royal Starship Droids (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Star-Wars-Battle-Packs-Royal-Starship-Droids-Pack/19529534) and Mos Espa Arena (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Star-Wars-Battle-Packs-Mos-Espa-Arena/19529531)

Dang. The Droids are already gone. Thanks for the heads-up, though.  :)

Good to see that WalMart is offering exclusives online.  But not very exciting to see that they're doing it with repacks, which is what both of these battle packs are.  Will WalMart be doing that with the exclusive basic figures?  I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath.

The droids one is technically not a repack considering all of the droids are BAD mold and the green one is a new droid (R2-N3*) not offered before.

Didn't they do the green one in the EE sets a few years ago?

No, that one was R2-A6

But I always thought the one on the Queen's ship was R2-A6. That what they always said during EP1.

Since the green droid (R2-N3) was destroyed repairing the hyperdrive at the beginning of TPM that one couldn't be R2-A6 as he was Ric Olie's droid/co-pilot during the Battle of Naboo.   (As Hasbro would like us to believe). :P

Why Jayson do you point these things out to us???   ;)

I always thought it was A6 as well.  Shoot.  Well, I was thinking of this set anyhow, mostly for the novelty of this group as BAD's.  Plus I kind of wanted a spare set for my Queen's Royal starship.

I like how 3PO's legs are absurdly warped to fit on the stand they were never meant to fit on.  Funny.

I really want a set of the racer flags for some reason but no way in hell, even on clearance (unless it's really steep maybe) I'd buy these sets.  TRU's and WM's both blow.  Bummer on the flags but I'll live I guess.  Or someone will scan them in so I can print them.

the droid set...  Eh, I like having extra droids.  I could see me getting that, but I really don't see anything there I don't already own pretty much.  Built quite a few green/white droids so one of him will just double up I guess.  Maybe if I see the set or it's on sale or something.  I've always assumed astromechs are like toasters in that just about everyone has one or can get one easily, and so there's tons of all the color combo's out there, especially the "basic" ones like the green/white or blue/white models and things.

I want the Astromech set but I doubt I buy it at $24.96... those BAD sculpts are cheap as hell, and I hate the extra holes on the sides. Not worth that kind of money, sorry.
Title: Re: Walmart Exclusive 3D Battle Packs
Post by: Nicklab on January 21, 2012, 03:06 PM
Gotta agree on the B-A-F astromech parts.  Those holes in the sides of the bodies never made sense to me, even if that promotion was the single best value added pack-in we've ever gotten with a basic figure.  The R4-G9 body made for a much better astromech IMHO.  R2-N3 might be technically new (in name and little else), but it's not as good of a figure as R2-A6.  I've got dozens of versions of R2-D2, Episode I and more recent versions of R2-B1, and I still have my original R2-R9.  Buying this set for one figure that on first glance looks like a repaint is kind of lame.

Sweet.  I won't tell though.  :-X

I'm not opposed to the BAD sculpt really...  the extra holes were for the kiddies and to that end they made sense.  I don't have kids that were playing with BAD's but know people who did and they used the extra holes to make weird droid creations.  That makes sense to me then and I can look past that.

But "cheap" is what it was all about I'm sure...  I have no doubt they used the BAD sculpt because it's simply less labor intensive I'd imagine than the R4-G9 sculpt.  At the $25 price I might get it I dunno, but only if I see it I think, or if it's easy enough to just get it online and have it site-to-stored...  Otherwise I guess I'm not bothered to not see it.  I'll just throw the extras to my Rebels or something.  Rebels love astromechs, and with all the pilot headswaps I did in just the last year, I've got a lotta guys needing pilots too.

Thanks for the great info Jayson!  I've been wondering if these were all repacks, but since they use the BAD mold, I definitely need to pick up this set to add them to my astromech display.

edit -- They haven't done R2 with the BAD sculpt yet have they?

OK, so the topic of the R2-A6/R2-N3 switcheroo came up at lunch today.  Does anyone have a definitive list of the astromechs on the Queen's ship?  A cursory check of the Star Wars Wiki says there were at least seven...

These were blasted while escaping from Naboo:  R2-B1 (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/R2-B1), R2-R9 (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/R2-R9), G8-R3 (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/G8-R3), and R2-N3

And these survived the ship's escape from Naboo:  R2-D2 (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/R2-D2), R2-C4 (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/R2-C4), R2-M5 (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/R2-M5)

I think there is one more (the wiki entry for the Queen's ship says it can hold eight), but neither of us could remember which that eighth one was...  ???

And what are the chances that LFL will retcon the roles of R2-C4 and R2-M5 on the starship in order to sell us two more, similar colored astromechs? :P

There could be a white and black one too or it is just a bad photo of R2-N3.

I wouldn't be to hard to make one. Just swap heads with the otc correscant pilot and jar jar. Turn jar jar head into a hat and your done. I think Glassman made one like that once.

\Me too, both are really nice. The Mos Espa Arena is actually pretty nice upgrades with deco. they even retooled Anakins hands to have turning wrists. Plus you complete the flag "official" collection....

I got rid of him eons ago, I honestly forgot. I can say all of the decos are superior to the older ones in the Mos Espa set. I compared them all last night sans Anakin  ;) . The deco on him looks good enough to be the standard Anakin until MH W2, the new rubbery pod helmet fits really nice. Sebulba has better paint ops , really noticable when you remove the helmet, naked 3-P0 also sports a more accurate paint job. The Pit Droids are bonus fodder and who can forget the friggin flags. I was happy enough with both sets as I ditched most of my EP1 crap a long, long time ago. When you see them in person it might be enough to sway you.

Not to add to paranoia, but I always worry about WM exclusives, they are so hit and miss around here.

I am with you, that's why I ordered them online. WM is too wishy washy, I am half tempted to buy the Vulture Droid to save the headache but since I am looking for their exclusive wave I figured I wait.

That's why I bought the Super Vulture Droid and the Dewback as soon as I saw them.  WalMart may be the largest retailer in America, but they're also the most inconsistent when it comes to Hasbro Star Wars exclusives.

I found two each of these Battle Packs today. Only one store of the three near me put them out, and it was the only DTF (giggedy) product they put out as well. Decided to pass on the Mos Espa set for now, although the new paintjobs really made the 12+ year old figures look good.

The Astromech set, I almost bought (despite repeatedly telling myself I wouldn't), until I went in closer to inspect the paintjobs. Total crap. Most of the sockets and compartments on the dome are just painted on, rather than sculpted on, as is the light near the flashlight/projector thing. The green astromech is actually missing this light, something that I find to be completely unacceptable. I know paint apps have been cut down over the last few years, but if they want me to pay top dollar for a bunch of repaints using some of the cheapest parts in existence, I'd like at least some attention to detail.

How much is that TCW Deluxe set with Castas pictured there?

My Walmart has one too that they stubbornly insist on keeping at full price.  >:(

I saw a couple of the Astromech sets tonight out and about as well.

What is much harder to find is that Deleted Scene wave. Those do not seem to linger at all.

I ended up finding a second set in a store.   :D   The set looks so good with all the droids lined up in a row that I couldn't resist picking it up!

I've been passing on the other set, though those pit droids have me really tempted.  You can't have too many pit droids.
