Vintage Kenner / My Stormtroopers
« on: May 6, 2009, 01:04 PM »
Not sure where to post this, but it's vintage and this is the only vintage section.

So, after being in the Stormtrooper focus arena for several years, I've trimmed and whittled my collection over the last year+. My collection previously consisted of the following:

Star Wars 12b
Star Wars Harbert 12
Star Wars Takara 12
Star Wars 20b
Star Wars 20g
Star Wars 20h
Empire Strikes Back 31b
Empire Strikes Back 41a
Empire Strikes Back 41e
Empire Strikes Back 47
Empire Strikes Back German 45
Empire Strikes Back 48c
Return of the Jedi 65b
Return of the Jedi 65c
Return of the Jedi Palitoy 65
Return of the Jedi Top Toys
Return of the Jedi 77a UP
Return of the Jedi 77a P
Return of the Jedi 77b
Return of the Jedi 79a
Return of the Jedi 79b
Return of the Jedi Tri-logo
Power of the Force

Plus an ESB Proof and the POTF Stormtrooper Coin Sculpt and Stage 1 Hardcopy.

Needless to say I was happy and proud of my collection. However, with age and family come different priorities, and for me, this meant that I just wasn't able to keep up and add to my collection. I came to the realization that many other collectors would probably appreciate these items much more than I. So, I began to whittle. First to go was the Sculpt and Hardcopy to a fellow Left-Coaster with a Trooper focus, then some of the ROTJ went, the ESB and the SW and POTF, peppered with various foreign cards here and there. I believe a lot of what I had is now under the watchful eye of another Trooper collector in Texas, but there are others around the globe.

Now for my current collection.

As I was whittling, I came to the further realization that I did not want to just jettison everything. So, I picked just a handful of items that I could easily save and appreciate. I thought it would be a neat idea to have one card from each series (SW, ESB, ROTJ) that I personally chose as my favorite (and most pristine). And in addition, I just couldn't part with my ESB proof card. And to further enhance them, I had 'em graded by AFA. I don't know why, but for me, having a grade on these just seems like a fitting tribute to my collection.

So, without further ado, my current Stormtrooper focus collection:

Star Wars 12 B - AFA Graded 80 C80 B80 F85

Empire Strikes Back 48 C - AFA Graded 90 (yes, 90!) C90 B85 F90

Return of the Jedi 65 C - AFA Graded 85 C85 B90 F85

Empire Strikes Back 21 Proof Card - AFA Graded 85

Star Wars 20B - AFA graded 80 - C80 B85 F85 - $220

Star Wars 20H - AFA graded 80 - C80 B85 C80 - $200

Star Wars 20B with Takara sticker - AFA graded 75 - C75 B70 F80 - $250
Honestly, I don't understand the grades on this one. The bubble doesn't have any dents or creases and is firmly secured to the card, so I'm not sure what warrants a B70. And the card is unpunched and extremely clean, so the C75 is another head-scratcher.

ESB 31b - $80
Very nice clean bubble; gun still firmly in figure's hand. The card lays flat. There is an obvious crease at the top right of the card and obvious evidence of a price sticker at the top left. The picture actually accentuates both these flaws, but in person, they seem less obvious. The lower left corner is bent slightly, and there are a couple creases on the back of the card.

ESB 41a - $90
Very nice bubble. The gun has partially come loose from the tape inside the bubble, and the tape has yellowed considerably. The card lays flat. There is residue from a price sticker on the upper front of the card, and there are small creases near the punch on both the front and back of the card.

ESB 47 - $100
The bubble has yellowed, but is dent free and the gun is still firmly taped to the bubble. There is evidence of a price sticker at the top right of the card and it looks as though it's been filled in with some black marker ink. The card lays flat and there are very slight creases near the top of the card.

ROTJ 65b - $60
Unpunched, with minor creases and a yellow bubble. Card lays very flat. Very nice!

ROTJ 79a - $45
Unpunched card. Bubble is yellow with a little bit of tape residue on the bottom of the bubble. The gun has come out of the tape in the bubble, but isn't entirely loose. There is tape on the back of the card which has just slightly torn the back side of the card. The card lays very flat.

ROTJ Top Toys - $90
The bubble is in very good condition with no dents. The gun is still taped firmly to the bubble. The card is very nice and lays very flat. There is a slight crease at top near the punch. The right arm of the figure appears to be yellowing only slightly.

ROTJ Trilogo - $70
Very nice unpunched card. There are only a couple creases at top front near punch. As with most trilogos, the very thin bubble plastic is dented pretty much all around, and this has resulted in cracks at the top and bottom of the bubble. However, these cracks haven't turned into gaping holes, and there's no danger of the gun falling out. The bubble actually displays fairly well.

Watto's Junk Yard / flowers delivery
« on: May 5, 2008, 09:56 AM »
Do NOT order from fromyouflowers.com.

So, my oldest sister was unexpectedly in the hospital Friday, so I thought I'd send her some flowers. I found a place online that does same-day delivery, and placed an order. There was no contingency explained or other notices regarding if the flowers could not be delivered. I thought all was fine.

So, I have a load of messages and emails on my work phone and computer this morning from this place saying that they were unable to deliver the flowers and to call them back. And when I call them, they say that they were unable to find the exact flowers I ordered, so just didn't deliver anything. What the hell!?

Long story short, my sister never got any flowers. At least I was able to get a refund. Though I'm withholding judgement until after I see my CC statement.

So, again, do NOT order from fromyouflowers.com.

Watto's Junk Yard / Netflix
« on: April 21, 2008, 11:57 AM »
Well, specifically, those with Netflix (or some other similar type rental arrangement). How many movies do you rent at a time? Do you just watch them casually then return them at your leisure, or do you plow through them like you're on a mission? How many movies are currently in your queue? How do you decide which ones to watch (queue management)?

I've got the two-at-a-time deal from Netflix, and have had it for about 6-7 years. I watch two movies pretty much every weekend, then send 'em back on Monday morning. Sometimes, if I get the new movies by Wednesday, I'll watch one that night, then return it on Thursday morning, which may lead to me receiving another new selection in time to view Saturday night. However, this doesn't always work. I think my preference would be to have at least three at a time, so that I could watch one each night on the weekends (Fri-Sun), but I'm too cheap to spend the extra couple bucks on the new subscription price.

As for queue, I've got 142 in mine, with another 20 in my saved DVDs list. And there's really no rhyme nor reason for my method of adding them. If I see an actor or director or song or whatever that appeals to me, I'll add the movie. I did add all the Academy-nominated movies this year (best picture, actor/actress, supporting, foreign, director, screenplays) so there's some method to my madness there. I usually won't read the reviews before I add movies, so sometimes it pays off, sometimes it tragically doesn't. However, overall I'm glad that I've seen movies that I'd never have seen otherwise. The one thing that has me stumped, though, is what movies to move to the top of the queue each week. If I just leave the queue the way it is, there's going to be movies that I really want to see now, but may not see for a year. But if I keep moving some movies to the top of the queue, others will continue to be pushed down and I'll forget about them and likely never see. It's almost like I need to have a marathon catch-up-type weekend, but that'll never happen.

All are MOC.

Saga:
Clone Trooper Fifth Fleet Security
Combat Engineer Clone Trooper

30th Anniversary:
Legends Battle Droids (red)
Animated Boba Fett
Stormtrooper

$5 each or $20 for the lot, plus shipping.

I've also got a Darth Vader bust that also doubled as a pseudolamp. I've had it since I was a kid (I'm estimating at least 25 years, but probably longer since I don't think I'd have wanted it when I was fourteen). I do remember getting it from a neighbor down the block (and being stoked when I did).

It's made of fired porcelain clay with a high-gloss black enamel. I don't spot any cracks or nicks whatsoever. It's fairly light in weight, but not totally fragile (hey, it's lasted almost 30 years; must be pretty durable). The bottom used to have a sheet of red felt glued to it, but that has since deteriorated, and what's left is just the felt remnants (it can definitely be easily covered by another piece of of felt). There used to also be a simple 20W bulb that was used as the lamp to illuminate the eyes, but that too deteriorated. However, like I said, the bust itself is pretty much in perfect condition. Take a look at the pics to see for yourself.

Now, since this seems like a one-off type of thing, I don't have a clue what it's worth. I don't have the space for it (and probably never will), but it does have a sort of sentimental value. I'm basically just seeing if anyone has any interest in it. I'm not sure how much shipping will be, but it is pretty big, as can be seen.

So, let me know if you have interest in it and we can hopefully work something out.

Thanks! :)

Watto's Junk Yard / Has technology passed you by?
« on: November 21, 2007, 02:27 PM »
My wife just bought a new laptop and left it on one day before dashing to work. I attempted to shut it down but couldn't figure out where the Shut Down command was in Vista (she had to show me later...ugh). I realized that technology had passed me by. I'm now a bit intimidated by all this stuff. My cell phone is a base model that probably does stuff I have no idea how to access or use. I've heard of an ipod (and actually want one...I've been looking to put all my Foghat tapes on digital!), but even my work computer is running on Win2000, so it's behind the times, too, and the newer ipods require XP. My last gaming system was a SuperNintendo bought back in '93, and I haven't a clue regarding any of the new systems (do they have Kaboom! and Pitfall!?). When the hell did I get so old and out of date with technology? Sure, having kids probably had something to do with this, but still, I feel I'm like my dad was back when he got his first computer (spending hours playing solitaire, lifting the mouse up and saying "crap!" all the time). Next thing you know I'll be chasing kids off my lawn at home.

Anyone else behind the times? Post anonymously, if needed.

Modern Classifieds / Wanted: CIV Collectors' Panels Medallions
« on: May 29, 2007, 01:47 PM »
Ya know, it's a long shot, but I've gotta try. I'm seeing if anyone has any medallions from the CIV collectors' panels that they'd be willing to part with. These were those super-cool medallions given away free during the various panelled discussions at Celebration. I'm really wanting the Stormtrooper medallion, but any would be great, as well, to possibly ultimately trade for the Stormie version. Here's what the medallions look like:

Medallions

And in case there's any doubt as to how much of a nut I am for Stormie stuff, here's a link to my nutcase.  :P

Thanks for any help!

Watto's Junk Yard / radio stations changing format
« on: March 1, 2007, 11:27 AM »
Ya know, this one just gets to me and I need to just let it out.

There was this great local station that I'd been listening to on my commutes for the last year or so. It played a mix of 70s, 80s, 90s and aughts; hardly ever repeated a song; played stuff I hadn't heard in forever; didn't have a stupid morning show; and didn't have any DJs. It was almost perfect. Well, beginning yesterday afternoon on my drive home, the station began just playing this computerized voice that would utter a countdown in hours, minutes and seconds. I began to sense something bad was going to occur and, according to the computerized voice, it was going to occur in sixteen hours, 28 minutes, and so-and-so seconds. Uh oh.

So, this morning, as I drive in to work, the computerized voice is still counting down, but it's down to just a couple hours. When I get into the office, I do a little search on the Web to see if there's any info, and it seems as if the station is changing formats to "something fresh and exciting that will appeal to the greater Bay Area." Uh oh.

I checked again just a few minutes ago, and the station has changed formats...to modern country. Guess I need to reprogram my presets.

But this is just the last in a string of sudden format changes by local stations. All stations that I have listened to. And most of these format changes are to stuff that I can't understand would have a big audience here. I mean, this isn't exactly "modern country" uh...country around here. And the previous format change I remember was from popular rock to Romantic Spanish music. Talk about a niche market.

Basically, it's just a very rude thing to happen.

So, it's back to sports talk radio for me...and CDs.

A supernice JDer came through on this one, so mission accomplished!

Other Collectibles / Smart Bombs...you've gotta be kidding...
« on: July 19, 2006, 10:37 AM »
On the JD front page there's a headline referring to a new SDCC exclusive called Smart Bombs. It's two figures in the "likenesses" of R2-D2 and C-3PO (or, ONE-B29 and C-FOUR-NR). Basically, this is a new line of collectible figurines (not just Star Wars) based on Fat Man and Little Boy. Yes, those are the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I had to read it over about twenty times to actually believe it. Can you say insensitivity? I can just imagine the thought process:
"Hey, you know what would be cool? We can make some collectible figurines in the image of the nuclear devices that instantly obliterated the lives of tens of thousands of innocent people and caused untold suffering for hundreds of thousands more."
"Yeah, we could paint them like C-3PO and R2-D2! I love Star Wars!"

A direct link to the article is here.

I think the creator of this line is trying to do an "art" thing by designing "toys" with a "message" or whatever. Yup, anything can be art, but I think he lost his path when he went the commercial-license way with Star Wars and Marvel. If he wants to make a commentary on the bombs and war, or whatever, he'd probably be able to achieve his purpose better without the shackles of a toy license. But, then again, it's really not about art. It's about making a buck. If only he'd admit it.

Saga '02-'04 / Imperial Dignitary stands
« on: April 19, 2006, 10:01 AM »
So, why do these two figures' stands have no pegs? What's the purpose of including a stand that has no peg? I could see if the stand was interesting or a part of a background, but these are basically just black slabs of plastic...with no foot pegs. And at first I thought the stand's peg had broken off, but it was too smooth for that. Then I thought that it was some neat magnetic base that Hasblo was going to start using, but nope. Just a piece of plastic. At least the figures are fairly easy to stand on their own. It's just weird, though.  ???
