Saga '02-'04 / Soft Goods?
« on: May 21, 2003, 03:24 AM »
Yeah yeah yeah, age old debate I know...

This one comes about though, because it relates to my recent review of Mace Windu: Arena Confrontation.

His cloak's softgoods except for the arms, but for those of you who own this figure, I think you'll agree with me that the SG's are REALLY nice.  They're a silky material that hangs really well on the figure, even forming folds that look realistic in the smaller scale.

Would full cloaks in this fabric be of interest?  What if Han Solo got an Endor coat in this fabric?  Or the Skywalker's got their ponchos with something like this?

I was really impressed that Hasbro used a great material for this though, and was pondering what other SG items using this exact material style would be like.

If I had paid attention in Home-Ec, I maybe would try my hand at making a Han coat after finding some of this fabric at the local Jo-Ann store I think.

I wish Hasbro would take this ball and run with it...  It definately beats the thick and stiff junk they've given us in the accessory packs and things.  I mean, that Han coat in the Endor Victory set was a JOKE.  Looks like Home One's laundry department used a bit too much starch...  That or Chewie did.

Saga '02-'04 / KB isn't the only one with sales...
« on: May 21, 2003, 03:18 AM »
Check TRU.com (Amazon I guess it is) also, as they WERE clearancing their exclusive landspeeder.

It's a nice piece even at $20.  The new one's to-scale, has a decent pack-in Luke, and Luke's hunting rifle even clips to the side of the new Landspeeder just as the rifle did in the movie.

I'd gotten a couple on sale earlier in the year for customizing, and just ordered 2 more the other night because that ship really is a nice piece of work.

I hope those of you who don't have it take advantage, because I felt that was one of the surprise hits of 2002, and it's sold out of every TRU I've been to since around December of last year so online (And for 50% off) is a great deal guys!

Don't pass it up!

I was pondering getting some Starfighter's with Kenobi figures.

$5 for a figure and a to-scale ship's not a bad deal (even if the ship's missing its 2 rear gear).

If the Republic used that starfighter overall, and it wasn't just a Jedi thing, I'd clear them out of the things...  Right now it appears a Jedi-only thing though.  Hmmm...

May still buy 2 or something though.

Saga '02-'04 / Favorite Geonosian???
« on: May 21, 2003, 03:14 AM »
I was putzing with my Geonosian army tonight (I've come in at a surprising # of them, almost 20, which shocked even me...  Guess I just lost track), and I was kind of thinking about them...

There's already 4 versions of this figure, with a 5th on the way (the pilot pack-in who appears removeable with an oxygen mask!  Way to go Hasbro!), but I was curious what YOU guys would like?

Would you want a new one?  Or re-release a specific one that's already out?

The Geonosian wasn't particulary hard to find, and while I liked them, they're not really poseable.

What'd I'd like is to see the Deluxe one that came with slashing Anakin to be released on a card with a pike, and snap on body armor/skirt.

That one is my favorite, it's the most sturdy, has the best pose, and it pops apart for a sliced and diced version.  The wings would be removeable for customizers to make a wingless version, and I think the limbs would be poseable in a boil/freeze to make them able to hold rifles or electro-pikes.

The 2 carded ones just left me wanting more, as I felt the warrior, and warrior with Massif figures were flimsy (Mine are either deformed, or fall over), and their poses were awkward.

The deluxe one with the hive and gun has an ugly mechanism on his back to make the wings flutter, and his pose is specific to the plasma rifle they used.

My other idea, instead of re-releasing the pack-in one from the Anakin/Geonosian 2-pack is to make an all new one using the armored body and give the NEW Geonosian bendable arms/legs ala the new Gollum figure in the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers line of figures.

This way our Geonosians would pose any which way we wanted.  Pack in a rifle and pike, and make the wings removeable off the back...  Instant uber army builder.

There's something about that slash-a-part one though, that REALLY is neat, and I would love a big pile of hacked up Geo's lying about. :)

On an unrelated note, those sample shots of the Geonosian fighter really looked great.  The ship looks 100% to-scale, the pilot appears like it's gonna be removeable and it may even have a removeable oxygen mask.  I really still can't get over that.  Why's the Clone Wars line getting such kick-@$$ attention to articulation and detail?  WOW!

The Original Trilogy / Re: Where'd the AT-AT go?
« on: May 20, 2003, 02:47 AM »
Endor's a tough thing to explain, and just like the Space Battle I think we miss probably 80% of what is going on there just so the movie fits in a decent ammount of time.

I've always chalked up the lack of AT-AT patrols at the rear bunker to two things.

1) AT-AT's are powerful, but the large trees still tower over them and would cause a vehicle of this size and design a lot of trouble in a tight spot.

Thus the AT-ST makes a better vehicle in the still heavily wooded areas of the Imperial Base.  The secondary access bunker was heavily covered with trees, yet the area around the landing platform, and presumably the area around the main generator dish/bunker were probably pretty well de-forested and were the presumed areas of attack...

2) distance...

If the AT-AT walker(s) on-planet are a large distance away, they may not reach the battle area on time...  Or simply they were to stay in defense of the heavily de-forested areas around the main bunker and landing platform(s), or other garrison zones.

The AT-ST simply made a better vehicle in a tight area where maneuveability became key though...  The AT-AT's maneuverable, especially for its size, but when the canopy of the trees would obscure its vision, and the trees themselves would impede the AT-AT from being effective anyway, the AT-AT(s) probably just hung back near the areas they were most effective in.  IE: the cleared out zones nearer to the main areas of the Endor base.

Seeing the AT-AT on-screen in ROTJ is still one of the neater moments of that movie I think...  A little reminder of those behemoths that slaughtered the rebels at Hoth.  :)

Hey Thomas,

Thanks for the accolades!  Greatly appreciated, as I'm proud to  have joined on with you all...  I am happy to see you dig the reviews, and I hope they are a good point to the site that helps to generate some traffic and interest around Chris's place. :)

I was pleased when I was asked to join, as it gave me some pride in knowing my reviews I was posting around the net were well received, even if people don't agree with me.

Thanks again for the fantastic approval...  I'm glad my "style" is appreciated and I hope you, the rest of the staff, and everyone here visitng the site are going to enjoy the reviews.  I want to give some honesty to toy reviews that I think is lacking at some collecting sites (Not just Star Wars ones either).

Thanks again for the nice sentiments, as they're greatly appreciated!

Hey MAC,

Non-mint's fine yeah...  And if a 2nd R5 isn't a problem I'd probably take one as I wouldn't mind having his head for casting it.

Amen...

It's a weeaaaakkkk figure.  And will be dubbed so in my review, I can say that much...

I bought him very begrudgingly.  I think it was more out of desire just to buy something, and there he was.

Not even great for customizing, ick...  :(  I mean, even the first POTF2 R2 was ok for customizing!

Episode 1 / Re: Which figures are you missing?
« on: May 15, 2003, 02:45 AM »
The Eopie, and the European Pit Droids are likely the rarest things from E1...

By the way, if anyone has either they're willing to offer up for a reasonable price, I'm all ears...  They're the last I'm really wanting to nab.

Those Pit Droids would've made great exclusives here in the states to clear out product...

Wonder if something like that is possible now to clear up some pegwarmers?  Buy so much stuff at say TRU, and get a free Pit droid 4-pack or something (Just 4 unique droids in a baggie).

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: What's Your Ethnicity?
« on: May 14, 2003, 11:39 PM »
Welp, to keep it simple I tell people I'm Irish and Italian...

My mother's maiden name is an Italian name, and of course my last name (McCracken) is as Irish as bland food and Guiness.

There's more in my family's history than that, like German, Hungarian, Native American, etc., but it's just not worth explaining.

We in Pittsburgh usually just call that Heinz 57 sauce. :)

Hey Guys, worked my way down here now as I've been going through the forums tonight. :)

Thanks for posting the heads up here OCB, it's appreciated...

I appreciate the good feedback too Dustrho...

I have flying R2 lined up for my next review actually, so you're in luck!  Of course, if you like him you may not like what I have to say, haha.

I have a few lined up actually, as I ran into some new figures in the last couple weeks (Surprisingly), so I have some ammo to work with here.  Enough to keep me semi-busy anyway. :)

Glad the reviews up and going well so far. :)

Saga '02-'04 / Re: So who else got excited? (Tarkin)
« on: May 14, 2003, 11:29 PM »
I've been itching for a new Tarkin for ages too.  He's in my top 3 resculpt list.  A Screen Scene figure perhaps (He with a Bast and new Leia figure maybe?)

I'm not into those busts, but if I can I'm nabbing that one.  It's too good to pass up.  They even gave him a shirt underneath his uniform!  Nice detail...

Hmmm, now I wanna make a custom Imperial Officer "at ease" with his uniform jacket off and a white dress shirt on from underneath.  Interesting and obscure custom for shizzle.

Saga '02-'04 / Re: Which army-builders need a facelift?
« on: May 14, 2003, 11:26 PM »
Every army builder needs redone in my book...

The Fleet Trooper, obviously, would be one of my choices...  I'd list others though, like a Hoth Rebel footsoldier, Hoth Rebel Technician, Imperial Technician, Rebel Yavin Technician, Rebel Endor Technician (Home One), Rebel Petty Officers, Rebel Fleet Officers, Rebel Hoth Officers, Imperial Naval (Death Star) troopers (Both in black jumpsuits AND black tunics), Imperial Officers in grey, white/black, black, and green tunics (And EU mustard brown), Imperial Gunner's, Imperial Pilots, Alliance X-Wing/Y-Wing pilots (Yavin), A-Wing Pilots, B-Wing Pilots, Snowspeeder Pilots, Endor Y-Wing Pilots, Poseable Gammorean Guards, FREAKING EWOKS (with removeable hoods, spears, stone axes, and bow/arrows), Bespin Guards, Cloud Car Pilots, Sandtroopers, Stormtroopers, Biker Scouts, Snowtroopers, Imperial Army Regulars (AT-ST Pilots)...

And that's just the movies (except that one EU officer uniform).

The EU has ooooooo so much more I'd go gaga over...  Like Seatroopers, AT-PT Pilots, AT-AA Pilots, Alliance "Infiltrators", Rebel Tank drivers, Imperial Artillery crew, Imperial and Rebel Troop Transport Pilots, Alliance Heavy Assault Troopers, Darktroopers (Phase I, II, & III), Alliance Biker/Swoop Scouts...

And there's more...  A lot more.

Oh I love me some army builders. :)

And I count the upcoming Captain Antilles as an army builder...  Every large unit of RFT's needs a fleet officer ya know! :)

Saga '02-'04 / Re: Accessories?
« on: May 14, 2003, 11:18 PM »
Hasbro had a couple "reasons" (Or I like to call them excuses) for changing over to a more and more pliable plastic over the years.

One point they said it was due to how the plastic takes to the molds...  Other excuses were the choking issues, and there were others if I recall correctly.

I for one laughed at the more pliable plastic taking to the molds, and it wasn't long after it was pointed out to them the level of detail and intricacy in weapons from Dragon and 21st Century toys, and detail in even smaller scale than 1:18, that Hasbro finally changed over to the "Well it's for choking concerns" excuse.

Dragon has a rigid plastic used on a machine gun for their troops, and I kid you not, the gun has a removeable clip and the BULLET at the top is painted it's proper brass color.

You have to see this gun in person to see the locking pin, the wire shoulder stock (collapsable on the real gun), and just to see this teeny, tiny, itsy, bitsy gun clip come out of the gun, and still even have paint detailing inside the clip.

It's a simple little thing, but when you see it (And you got this gun type for FREE when you bought one of the Dragon Action 18 $8 figures who had already come with a removeable belt, cloth camo poncho, and 3 extra rifles with grenades and landmines) you just will think how amazing things CAN be from Hasbro if they put their collective minds to work.

I don't expect Stormtroopers to have removeable clips on their guns, but a plastic that's not bent 90 degrees when I open the figure might be nice!   :-\
