Original Trilogy Collection / Re: Fan Choice #6
« on: February 24, 2004, 10:34 AM »
Let's see, DS Trooper got carded. Ree Yees got carded. Motti got carded. R2 w/ Holo Leia got carded. The choice is a no brainer for me. If they're gonna put out old figures anyway, at least they were kind enough to give us a choice with one of 'em. I voted for Stormy Han for the simple reason that we've never had a carded version in the modern line. It's about damn time we get one! Hopefully the OTC line will also see a Luke in Stromtrooper gear to compliment him. Hell, who are they kidding here, they'll release all of them again anyway.

Saga '02-'04 / Re: Fate of the lines in 2004

My own belief is that the OTC cards will eventually hold prequel figures.  If you lookat the card it only says OTC on the bubble insert.  Take out the insert and they are like Saga cards just saying "Star Wars".

Good call! I hadn't thought of that. It certainly would be simple for Hasbro to put out PT figures on the same card back by just changing the insert. I really, really like the retro packaging for the OTC line and hope it sticks around for awhile but, we all know how frequently Hasbro feels the need to "freshen up" the line.

Based on history, and actually living through the entire lifespan of the REAL vintage lines, here's my thoughts on what to expect:

The Original Trilogy Collection will be devoted solely to figures from A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The preguel figures will probably take a 8-10 month hiatus.

In 1999, to coincide with the release of The Phantom Menace, Hasbro focused all of their attention on characters from that film. Similarly, the Attack of the Clones (Saga) collection was originally devoted to it’s own characters. However, after the first month and about thirty figures later, the Saga line saw the introduction of Original Trilogy figures.

With the forthconing release of the Original Trilogy on DVD, for some of us arguably an event as important as the release of E1 itself, Hasbro will likely concentrate solely on figures from the first three films leaving little time or energy for PT figures. If you think about it realistically, this is probably THE LAST hurrah for an exclusively OT based line.

Movie tie-ins are a way of life for Hasbro, and they've shown us time and time again, that they’re going to take advantage of the DVD release the same way they did with the theatrical releases of Empire, Jedi, Phantom and Clones.

Fear not, with the Original Trilogy Collection beginning in June/July 2004 and E3 figures undoubtedly debuting in April/May 2005, the OTC will likely only last ten months or so. Then, I speculate, all figures will funnel into the same packaging set aside for the E3 campaign. Perhaps a "Star Wars Universe" or "Legends" collection.? Time will tell.

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: Basic Figure assortment...
« on: February 18, 2004, 01:30 AM »
Well,I like it,except for all the darn rehashes.
-Biker Scout
-POTJ Luke X-Wing
-Wicket
-POTF Leia
-Saga Vader Thrown Room
-C-3PO
-Han(WTF?!4th time reissue)

I know I'm forgeting some,but still!That's quite a hefty number!

It's not Hasbros intention to get you to buy all the repacks every time they change cards, it is however a bonus for them if you happen to be a completist and buy them all anyway. The true reason iss to keep certain figures regularly available to the casual fan/child/collector. Just like back in the real vintage days when you could still get the same 1977 Luke sculpt well into the mid-eighties. As I posted on another thread, I'm sure the repacks are just beginning. Wait till you start seeing entire lines repackaged on a new card. That will really piss off some of the new collectors.

As per my reasons above I still maintain that the Repack-mania has only just begun. Within years the line will drastically taper off, then more time will be spent on clever packaging and gimmicks than on resculpting and retooling new figures. I'm betting in the next three years years we will see at least 50% of the POTJ line alone Repacked.

Saga '02-'04 / Re: Hall of Fame Wave

I for one have been looking forward to seeing some of these. I want 7 of the 12 but can't seem to find any 'round these parts. Found everything else including the Yavin wave, but no HOF.

JesseJames, I'm not sure if you're blessed or cursed having stores that order more than one case at a time? Literally every store around me has been caught up in the "let's order one case at a time" trend for the last six months. On a positive note, and because I have a good idea when my area stores stock their Star Wars figures, I've been lucky enough to find everything except the HOF stuff so far. On the negative side however, the area stores are empty 6 of the 7 day a week. Like I said before, unless you know when to look, this trend sucks!

These figures look fantastic! I’ve been holding my breath for years for a good Bespin Leia and even longer, perhaps decades, for a new Cloud Car Pilot. I especially like the fact that Leia has a plastic sculpted cape and all of the figures have a decent amount of articulation that isn't too gaudy. The knee articulation on the CCP gives me hope. I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict that we will get confirmation for the Twin Pod Cloud Car by years end.

Wow! I’m clearly in the minority here but, I truly find these figures to be completely and utterly hideous.

Wow, really Todd?  Is it mostly just the soft goods that are bothering you?  I can understand that a little, since I'm not a big propenent of them either, and they do look a little "clumpy" on these figures...

If it's just the soft goods, then do you like the Han at all, that comes without any soft goods?  Just curious if that's all your beef is with, or if it runs any deeper than that...

If it were just the cloth I might have been able to get past it. Maybe? But when you add ToyBiz-style articulation to ridiculously frumpy "soft goods", both things that I absolutely detest, that’s the worst thing that could happen to Star Wars figures as far as I’m concerned. Again, lucky for Hasbro I’m in the minority on this issue. I'm aware that many people want to see more soft goods and more articulation in the 3-3/4" line so this news must be very welcome news for them. But, I wonder how many people would like these figures if they were not coming packaged on the faux vintage cards? I know I still wouldn't. Beyond the packaging, nothing about the three figures revealed so far feels “vintage” to me. Damn, at first glance I thought I was looking at new 12” Luke and Ben figures not 3-3/4” figures. What does that say? Besides perhaps that my eyes are going bad.

I was really looking forward to getting those vintage-style cards too, but truth be told, nostalgia isn’t more important than my personal preferences, But hey, I still look forwrd to the forthcoming Original Trilogy Collection cards and figures. Even the Repacks.

I'm fine with the "Repack" figures. I’ve learned to accept that it's a necessary evil when a collection of anything expands to this size. Once a figure reaches its apex it's no longer cost effective for a manufacturer to keep making new versions of that figure if they will see little, if any, improvement. It does however make sense if that manufacturer keeps re-releasing the "definitive" version of a figure. Now, we can endlessly debate as to whether or not any of these figures can be considered “definitive”, but that’s another thread all together.  ;)

Wow! I’m clearly in the minority here but, I truly find these figures to be completely and utterly hideous. IMO Hasbro just slammed another nail in the coffin of the 3 3/4" inch line with this latest attempt to “dress” our little plastic Star Wars guys. Good lord! Leave the cloth to the 12” figures. At least I get the opportunity to spend that $120 elsewhere. Thank “The Maker” for the non-vintage OTC basic assortment.

I'm interested in:

-AOTC Deluxe Obi-Wan Kenobi: Kamino Showdown (MOC)

Don't have anything from your wants.  Would you sell?  Anything else you may be looking for?

I'm only looking for things from my list. If you want I can hold it for you and if/when you can find any of the basic figs from my list I'll trade at that time. I'll trade it for one figure because I only paid $5 for it.

My question suggestion:

Can we get, or expect soon, some clarification on the fate of the Saga line and the forthcoming Original Trilogy Collection (OTC). What is the plan as far as release schedules are concerned for both and will both lines continue simultaneously? Is the OTC simply the beginning stages of yet another card design change for the Saga line or just another micro-line like Clone Wars, Shadows of the Empire and the Expanded Universe?
