I'm glad Hasbro is doing some honest Q&A updates. That's very helpful.

I wouldn't be too sad to see the Sandcrawler never come to light, at least in its current form. The vintage was dodgy in its day, and by today's standards it just is plain bad. Could Target have actually had the sense to realize this as well?

It is the first time without the [heavy sarcasm] Hasbro braintrust [/heavy sarcasm] to let the niave readers know how to read the sentence.

I figured the short bus had already left for the day to RS.   :-*

Jared, I caught that short bus to RS earlier today but I'm back now. I'm also all better now. Keeping with my usual MO there, I posted this in the alarmist "like we have any say" Save-Our-Sandcrawler thread:

I'll be a little bummed if it doesn't get released, but it's beyond my control. I never had one of these growing up, but three of my older cousins did. When they went to college their mom's were cleaning out garages and basements and knew I was still into Star Wars, so they gave me a lot of swag. Most of it was trashed stuff, but I did get 3 Sandcrawlers from different aunts! Two of them still worked and were complete (except for one ramp). The other was still MISB - they had bought it for Christmas back in the 80's as stashed it away for the big day - then couldn't find it when they were wrapping all the gifts. She said they ran out and bought another so my cousin would have it for Christmas and planned to return the other one when it surfaced. Well, it wasn't found for a long time, and by then Target wouldn't take it back. You know how they are about returns/customer service. Score for me though!

So I guess I could really give a crap less about the Sandcrawler. I've already got three, not counting the one I got at the Thrift Store last year the kids use as a hamster cage.

All that fun and I didn't get any response. Funny.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: 5 free songs at iTunes - Your picks
« on: May 1, 2004, 02:36 AM »
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. The promotion ended about 30 minutes ago for me. I came up with 23 free songs on this computer and my wife had 12 on hers. I'll share my selection to bring closure here to those that "need to know".

Before anyone craps or places bodily fluid on my choices, read the amount of viable suggestions I got above and then reconsider. If you would like insight into the thinking behind several of my choices I'll offer two points.

1. 1 hour to choose songs or loose them before the promo ended.
2. High school girl friends mix tape from 14 years ago nearby with several songs legibly handwritten on the label.

Ah man..I missed a meet up in Santa Monica. ****.

I live just down south.

But then again...Nobody wants to meet me...

twice...

so maybe this is a good thing. ;)

Man, everybody is welcome. Maybe next time - although I was left roaming the streets of Santa Monica until well after 1 in the morning. But that's another story.

DeanPaul...you the man.

Kevin

You're welcome. I liked the greyscale better that the monoprint results at first... The monoprint was a little harder to recognize as you because... well... let's face it. You're just not as recognizable as Andre the Giant.

These are the monoprints:

Had a chance to meet up with Jared and Matt in Santa Monica at the 3rd Street Promenade last week. No one wore a pink sweater, although the Hooters of infamy was just around the corner.

Be gentle.

Yucky ducky. I have a feeling more than the threads will be recieving bodily fluids/solids deposits over there.

The slowness of it was most disappointing. Which is alright, because I mostly go there to pick fights... remember what it was like to be in junior high... Heck, I'm not sure why I go there....

Thanks everybody. I have fun with these. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but what else is new?

NIce review sir :D  Pictures are very well done.  But here I'd thought all along that Porkins had died :-\  After all that he lives?  Maybe it's a sweater phenomenon?

I don't know what Jek is doing in that picture. Just remember that it's the yet-to-be-released-even-more "improved" dvd "special special" edition. Who knows, maybe Lucas changes it so Jek not only survives, but is the one who blows up the Death Star...

I've been asked nicely yelled at to use my photoshop skills for good... ;)

Great job of course, Dp.  But what happened to the "wet-willy" shot?!   8)

That's Ozzel. Thanks. Care to spill the ending of EP III while you're at it? I can't tell you anything! :-*

Toy Reviews / General Jan the Man
« on: April 27, 2004, 04:56 PM »
Just a quick review of General Jan Dodonna. I picked him up some time ago along with Dutch and Antilles, but it has taken some time to get this old timer online.

I really like that they made Dodonna. It’s nice to have another high ranking rebel around, and my kids like that the Imperials have someone new to capture.

First, he has a somewhat odd arm sculpt, which is great for holding his belly during a good laugh or supporting his head while relaxing and watching clouds on a summer day... Along with all the other officer slackers...

....But bad for aiming at Jawas who panhandle on the streets of Mos Eisley asking for spare medallions. It's a given that figures with molded robes usually cannot sit worth a darn, but they should at least be able to shoot straight. Jan Dodonna is pretty worthless in the department of self defense.

The paint is generally good, not too much and accurate in color. The one exception is his hair. It looks like it was applied by a five year old using a squirming young kitten dipped in paint. Which may not be too far off the mark these days.

General Rieken was quick to point out the bad hair coloring to his buddy Jan. He had to. It was beginning to distract the troops, and moreover morale was taking a hit.

So Antilles offered to  take Jan to see Rystall and Greeta around the corner at their hair shop, hoping they could help his buddy with a better dye job.

Sadly for our man Jan, she was unwilling to accept Rebel medallions as payment. They're just not worth what they used to be with the fall of the Empire and all. The trip wasn't a total waste though, Antilles was able to use a gift certificate for a good scalp massage and some products.

Hair aside, this figure was made to do great things. This figure was made to give out medals. And lay on his back watching clouds. And if Hasbro ever makes one, look nervously at a war table or screen on Yavin IV.

Many have speculated that since he comes with three count 'em three, all together now... three medals that Lucas may be giving Chewie a medal in the further adapted "special edition and beyond" dvd release. Here's a smuggled out screen capture of the edited scene:

Purists on the other hand should not be alarmed. By hiding the "extra" medal, it is still possible to reenact the scene as originally presented (see below).

*Other lazy figures, Antilles, John Kerry, dancers and awards people (well, basically any figure that is not Jan Dodonna) are sold separately from the figure being reviewed.

Usually Ebay scams are pretty easy to spot. This morning I read about one at a site called macintouch.com that is not. Here is the post:

Apr. 27, 2004

John Fuhrmann
I was bitten by a fraudulent email that appeared to be from eBay today... I am a webmaster and know my html and I looked very carefully at the source code before proceeding. All the links in this html email appeared to go to eBay. COM

The Subject of the message was: eBay Bid Cancellation Notice - Item
The message appeared to be from: aw-confirm@ebay.com
The message contained no text, only an attachment: detrimisScurt.htm

I have external links turned off in my email and so I looked at this apparently benign attachment. The very legitimate looking attachment said:

Dear eBay Community Member,

The bid that you entered for the item (<a href="http://scgi-secure-ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPIdll/ViewItem.htm">284328704</a>)
has been cancelled. You can view the reason provided for the cancellation by selecting the (bid history) link from the individual item page.

Regards,
eBay

I currently have bids underway through a timed auction manager and so I clicked on the number of the auction above. This brought up a legitimate looking login screen that appeared to be generated by eBay. COM. I put in my id and password and logged in. I was then taken to a REAL eBay page that said there was NO SUCH AUCTION!

Sensing BIGTIME FRAUD, I immediately went to my profiles on eBay and paypal and changed my passwords. I also forwarded the message in question to spoof@ebay.com, who wrote back to me within minutes to tell me that my suspicions about this message were correct.

I have been aware of several criminal spoofs like this in the past but I was always able to detect their true purpose before compromising my account.

End of story. Anyway, just thought it might save someone some trouble.

I'd freak out if my cat started shooting mineral oil out his ass all over the place.

You just gave me an idea of what Chris Berry might have meant by his "...." post... Chris, was that an ascii illustration of the trail the cat made running around?

If the answer is "no" please don't tell me. I'd prefer to continue thinking it's a "yes".

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Old People can be...
« on: April 26, 2004, 08:18 PM »
Old people can be.......  a wealth of knowledge, wonderful to be around, and a source of inspiration.

People can be mean, rude, nasty, old or not.

Basically what Morgbug said... ;)

Here are two examples:

Saturday afternoon, I am the local McD's.  Took the kids there while waiting for Nadine to get her hair done.  Place is packed, and I finally find a seat, buts its only a table for two.  I walk over and notice a man sitting at a table for 4 all by himself.

I start to sit the kids down, but realize this isn't going to work, and I nicely ask if it would be OK for us to trade tables so I can sit with my kids.

"No... I was here first, tough luck for you"

"I understand sir, but since you are all alone and I have these two little kids to take care of, it would be a great help if we could trade"

"No" quite smugly he says.

Another time and place I would have been dragging this man out of his chair by the neck, but I have worked out a lot of anger issues since then... ;)

So I proceeded to help my kids the best I could until someone else came up and offtered the table they were leaving.

Now, this man was "older" he smelled, and looked like he wore the same clothes everyday.  I guess I knew in my heart when I first saw him he wouldn't move, but reminded myself not to be close minded and judge others by their appearance... didn't work this time.

Another story... I spent a great deal of time with a lady helping her with some technical issues (I work support for a wireless company) she was qite elderly and for some reasons her son set her up with wireless internet services.  These can be very complex to troubleshoot, and looking in her file she had numerous calls for help, but at the beginning most of these her son would call in. I spent some time helping her, got it all sorted out, she thanked me and asked how she could call me back if there was trouble again.  I gave her my first name, and tech ID, with some trepidation as I really can't be her personal helper each time she can't figure out how to open an e-mail...

A few weeks later I get a package addressed to Scott ID 4069 care of the company I work for.  When I open it up there was a gift certificate for a local restaurant, and a nice letter from her.  The letter basically thanked me for all the help, and she was sorry to be a bother.  It went on to say that she usually asked her son for help but he recently was killed in a motorcycle crash.  She said talking to me reminded her of him.

I keep the letter at my desk as a reminder that sometimes there is a another story you don't know about.

Scott

Thanks, Scott.

Those are both great stories.
