Title: 2003 Stanley Cup Playoffs / NHL news
Post by: Scott on April 7, 2003, 01:33 PM
For the first time in over 10 years the Playoffs are back in Minnesota and I can't be more excited.  The North Stars run back in 1991 was one of the funnest sports memories of my youth.  HEre are the teams:

Western Conference

#1 Dallas vs
#8 Edmonton
#2 Detroit vs
#7 Anaheim
#3 Colorado vs
#6 Minnesota
#4 Vancouver vs
#5 Saint Louis

Eastern Conference

#1 Ottawa vs
#8 New York Islanders
#2 New Jersey  vs
#7 Boston
#3 Tampa Bay  vs
#6 Washington
#4 Philadelphia vs
#5 Toronto

I'm going with a Ottawa vs Detroit finals although Jersey and Colorado have a good shot as well.  I don't think thw Wild can get past Roy but you never know what will happen.

I do think the Oil is going down in the first round  :-*

As long as Vancouver chokes, I'm happy.  :-*

I used to be a big Jets fan (Teemu Sellane!)  but when they moved to Phoenix I pretty much gave up on Hockey.  But I'll give my props out to the Avalanche...gotta watch out for Roy in the playoffs, the man is a stud in the crease

The Jets...there is a name I haven't heard in a long time.  They were always one of my favorite teams on NHL Hockey for Genesis.  I must have played 10000 games of it in college.  That equals around 10,000 cans of beer as well...anyway Sellane was a stud on there along with Phil Housley and Zhamnov and then Keith Tkachuk

Perhaps our resident Winnipegger can fill in the gaps

Although I'm hoping I'm wrong and the Leafs go all the way!!!!!

The Jets huh? :'( :-[

Oh, sorry, ok, I'm better now.  Sorry, that should read bitter ::)

Prior to leaving, they were on the verge of being an amazing team, especially when you could get Zhamnov playing.  Probably the critical element you forgot Scott is Nikolai Khabibulin who started his career in Winterpeg.  They were all too young at the same time, but had they been kept together, they would have been frightening.  I still say they made a mistake when they traded Selanne rather than Zhamnov or Tkachuk.

Selanne is still my favorite player.  Just an all around classy guy.  3 years into his career, his and Tkachuk's contracts came up at the same time.  Tkachuck stayed home in what appeared to be the early years of a perpetual snit.  Selanne showed up at training camp without a contract.  Stupid in the sense of injury and end of career, but utterly and completely classy.  He just wanted to play hockey and do so for the people in Winnipeg.  There are rumours that the chase piece in the McFarlane series NHL6 will have Selanne in a Jets jersey.  I guarantee you, no matter the price, I will win the first one offered on ebay.

Prior to that though, there was a year in which the Oilers, Jets and Flames, all in the same division, finished 1-2-3 in the league.  Jets beat the Flames in the quarters (IIRC) and then the Oilers, Cup champs that year (again) beat the Jets in the divisional final.  Tragic.

Winnipeg Arena was a horrible place but it was beyond a shadow of a doubt the loudest arena in the NHL come playoff time.  The whiteout originated there and nobody did it better.

 :'( :'( :'(

I'm guessing an Ottawa-Detroit final as well, with the Wings winning (unfortunately).  Jersey and Dallas should have a good shot too with Colorado on the outside, though they played extremely well to end the season.  Dallas-Edmonchuk should be a bloody brawl.  No offense to the battle of Alberta, but that is where a true playoff rivalry exists now.

This should be a pretty spectacular playoff season.

I'm gonna go get a beer, put on my Jets jersey and cry now.  *sniff* thanks for da memories boys. 8)

Yesterdays loss and the results of the previous 4 games between the Avs and Wild say to me it was no fluke.  Just because they are an "expansion" team dosen't mean they don't have the capability and the coach to pull the upset off this round.  I still think the Avs will win but it will be a fun 7 games  :-*

Can you say Shut Out!

Roy in true playoff form and goals from the guys who need to step up have me thinking 5 games and a little rest...

What is up with Detroit? Not having a classic Detroit vs. Colorado playoff match-up will be disappointing. They are really getting it handed to them!

Yeah I was waiting for this one Sasquatch, wowza what happened to their O?  Seeing Roy play goalie is like watching Bonds bat or Barry Sanders rush, a thing of amazement.  If and when the AVs win they will be my team for the rest of the playoffs (see the sports thread).  As long as the Wings and Stars lose I'm cool

Even though the Flyers lost in double OT last night, I still have hope.  They'll win tomorrow and even the series up, which I now believe will go seven games.  Other than the NJ - Boston and Ducks-Red Wings (boy do I love when the Wings lose), I think we're going to see alot of long first round series.

LET'S GO FLYERS!!!!!!

Well, I haven't wanted to jinx my boys here, but it's time for me to jump on the Ducks bandwagon as they lay down the law against the Red Wings!  Wow!  Pretty surprising series so far, to say the least...  Might redeem themselves following a couple of their prior sweeps at the hands of the Wings in the 90's.  Looking good so far!   8)

But Disney's dismal franchises couldn't possibly win it all back-to-back could they?  Or could they...?  :)

I was about to say the same thing Brent...that is what I hate about LA and NY fans...oh the Dodgers suck so I'll glom on to the Angles now...oh the Angels suck again Go Dodgers!

Oh, don't you two start with me now...   :-X

I think we've been over this before, but I'll state it again:  I've been a diehard Lakers, Dodgers, Angels, Raiders, and Rams (and UCLA) fan my entire life - through the good and the bad (and even the relocations).  I usually go to 5-10 games a year for each of these (local) teams (including the Clippers), and watch almost every other game for them on the tube.

Am I more vocal when my teams are kicking butt?  Sure.  Doesn't mean that I've lost interest or loyalty in my other teams when they're sliding though, just not as much to talk (or gloat) about.  Might I say my teams are "sucking" right now sometimes?  Sure.  Doesn't mean I hate them and am not rooting for them anymore...

As for the Kings and Ducks in hockey - I was a pretty big hockey fan for about 10 years from the late 80's to around the late 90's (yes, coinciding with The Great One's arrival/departure).  But hockey's never been a favorite sport of mine, probably since it barely exists in SoCal (outside of NHL) and it's the one sport I've never really gotten involved in - so I'm not super loyal to the sport itself.

But the Kings have been boring and crappy for a while now, and the Ducks dumped the always exciting Teemu Selanne not long ago, so my hockey fandom has greatly diminished in recent years.  But I'll admit it that when either of these two teams (or the Clippers in the NBA) start to make some noise, I'm willing to regain my former interest in them and hop on the bandwagon.  So shoot me.

But that's only the case now with these three (though I used to be diehard for them not too long ago also) - not the others who I go through thick and thin with.  Basically, it just boils down to the fact that L.A./Orange County is a large enough area that we are fortunate enough to have a couple teams to root for in each major sport (*cough*NFL*).  That's not my fault though, now is it?  Following in my Dad's footsteps, I've rooted for ALL of my local sports teams since I was about 5 years old...

So get off me!   :P   :-*

/me slaps Brent and especially Scott for equating him to a fair-weather fan!  Then stomps off in a huff...

Well, Matt's going to be annoying for another series it appears.  3:00 left and the quackers are up by 1.  This would be a not insubstantial upset.  They deserve it though, a four game sweep is no fluke.  That is one might hot goaltender.

Post by: JediMAC on April 25, 2003, 02:52 AM
That game was absolutely unbelievable...   :o  I'm so glad I had the chance to watch that - it really renewed my hockey spirit!  I got home when the first OT started, and just kept watching, and watching, and watching...  Even neglected the (pathetic) Laker game in favor of my favorite quackers.  Nothing like sudden death playoff hockey.  None of this girly tie crap like in the regular season.  That was a double header + 1!  Riveting, edge of your seat action, for what... 81 minutes?  Regardless of who wound up winning, that was just amazing...  Giguere is THE MAN.

I was close to bashing in my TV screen when they called the Ducks seemingly game winning shot off.  That was a totally weak call.  The puck was clearly over the line before the net (BARELY) came dislodged.  Glad that didn't cost us the game, or you would've never heard the end of my referee potty mouth talk...

These Ducks are just like the Angels, who play just a couple hundred yards away.  Scrappy guys, fun to watch, who just never say die.  It would be the most amazing thing in the world to have both of the Anaheim teams win it all in the same year, let alone in the same millenium.  But I'm probably getting a little ahead of myself here...  I'll settle for an amazing game 1 victory on Dallas' home ice for now...

BTW, my die-hard sports fan wife's expert analysis on the sport of hockey goes like this:

It's a lame sport and not even very hard.  All they do is skate around in circles and "whack the puck".    Uh, OK...   :-[
Title: Re: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: Mikey D on April 25, 2003, 08:23 AM
I saw Dallas tie it up and then fell asleep before OT started (around 10:30EST).  From the sound of it, the game seemed similar to the Flyers - Pens 5OT game a few years ago, which I did stay up to watch.  Truely an amazing game.

I love playoff hockey.

Flyers - Senators tonight.  Should be a good game.
Title: Re: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: Scott on April 25, 2003, 08:52 AM
And the Wild-Canucks, looks like I should have stayed up too, although the T-Pups/Lakers tilt didn't end until 1:30 AM locally...almost as good as Tuesday night when the Wild and Wolves won in the wee hours of the morning.

I still cannot figure out why they don't start these games at 6:30-7:00 Pacific meaning 9:30-10:00 Eastern.  I would think East Coaster would still watch let alone fly over land!
Title: Re: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: Morgbug on April 28, 2003, 12:43 AM
Well, those Minnesota boys just keep at it.  3-2 win over the Canucks tonight to tie it up.  Looks to be a very nasty series.

Last shot of the game, Vancouver net empty, player skating in for a slapshot on the left wing and man, if he didn't look more occupied with running the MInnesota player than firing the shot, I'll be a monkey's uncle.  Really weird too.  Last shot, down by a goal, couple of seconds and you want to hit somebody?  Chippy, scrappy, going to get just plain ugly.

7 game series?

The amazing Ducks just keep rolling along.  6-0 now, including 4 OT victories - all over 100+ point teams!  Very nice run so far, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high just yet...

Will Disney get another miracle before it ditches it's two pro sports franchises?  I sure hope so!

Uh-oh was indeed correct.  Wild had a great chance on a partial breakaway during the penalty, but not to be.

Canucks get the goal with about 15 seconds left on the power play.  Cnaucks lead series 3-1 (I think).

Minnesota seems mildly hungry in this one, 4 mintues left in the second, 6-1.  Cliff Ronning just scored.  Looks like this one is going back to Minnesota for game 6.  I'd be impressed with the Canucks if they come back and win this one, but it doesn't seem likely.

Wow.  Just wow.  Ducks are moving on!  Disposed of the top two seeds in the West!  These guys are just amazing, and a joy to watch.  Something about overachieving, gutsy, teams from Anaheim, just gives me a real warm feeling inside...   ;D  Now good luck to the Wild, so Scott and I can get it on AGAIN!

On a serious note, would one of you hockey loving Canuckleheads please explain to me when exactly the two sports of soccer and hockey merged?!?  Please...  WTF is going on with that Dallas game tying goal with 4 minutes left?  Since when does KICKING and redirecting a puck out of midair into the goal count?  Every commentator and sportcaster all night was saying no way in hell that goal should've counted.  And they still got it wrong WITH instant replay!   >:(  :-X  I almost went completely insane and beligerent when they called that goal good after 10 minutes of reviewing it...  ::)  Absolutely crooked, dispacable ruling there, that could've cost us the game.

Thank GOD (who I had just denounced with great conviction on the allowed goal) that the Ducks came right back with the game winner just a couple minutes later to polish off the series.  Poetic justice.  And there IS a God...  :)

Still trying not to get my hopes up though.  I think I've become a little more cautious after that Raider fiasco in the Super Bowl, when it comes to expectations for my teams to win it all...  But the Ducks should feel free to aleviate that fear, and take the CUP!   8)

Actually, the ducks play hideously boring, trapping hockey that sucks the life and joy out of the game.  It wins, but it's tantamount to blasphemy.

As regards kicking or knocking the puck out of the air, well, kicking is a no-no, but it depends on whether there was forward motion of the foot or simply a deflection off the foot/skate.  Redirecting with the stick in the air is allowed, so long as the contact with the stick is not above the waist.  Tough call there and other goals in the playoffs of questionable nature have been allowed.  One of the OT goals in the first round was allowed that was clearly a high stick.

Oh yeah, if you are watching US based hockey announcers, I'd have very little faith in their opinions.  No offence, but they tend to be transplanted baseball guys that really don't understand the game very well (unless perhaps they are out of the traditional hockey grounds - MInnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan).

Indeed.  I'm pulling for the Wild as well, if for no other reason than Scott's excitement over the prospect of having all 3 of his pro teams get waxed out of the playoffs by my teams...  Too bad the Vikings didn't make the show, or I'm sure the Raiders would've found a way to complete the pro sports grand slam of SoCal over Minnesota!   :-*   :P

Ah, already presuming the win in the next series are we Matt?  Tell ya what, I'll still put up that poster in a bet with ya.  Since you chickened out of backing your Lakers against all comers, I'll reformat for you.  I think your Ducks can beat the Canucks.  But I don't think they can beat the Wild.

So, if the Wild win tonight, I'll put up my poster against something of equal value.  Wild over the Ducks in the NHL Western semifinal.  Unless of course you'd like to take your beloved Lakers? :-*

I don't know Scott, I'm starting to worry about your status as a fan.  ;) First the comment last night about not being able to watch, now this?  C'mon, it's hockey season, relish the fact you get to stay up late and drink beer?  Or is Max keeping you up in the middle of the night :-*
Title: Re: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: Scott on May 9, 2003, 05:02 PM
Yep, I got a whole 4 hours of sleep last night, 1 year molars are coming in...hockey game went until around midnight...rough night, worth it though cause they won!

I used to stay up until midnight-1 every night, now I am lucky to get to 11.  All I am saying is there is no reason they need to schedule 10:30 PM(Eastern) Hockey games...especially in the conference finals.  Isn't the NHL in trouble, don't they need to build a fan base???

Idiots
Title: Re: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: Morgbug on May 9, 2003, 05:15 PM
Aw, I'm just messing with ya.  My daughter just turned 3, she just finished second molars, is in a new "big-girl" bed and wakes up in the middle of the night and comes to our room.  Every night.  I can relate.

I've almost resigned myself to never having a normal night's sleep again.

As regards the NHL, I thought they were in trouble as soon as they grabbed Bettman.  Look at all the non-traditional markets.  This ain't baseball or basketball where a kid can get a pickup game going with a minimum of equipment.  Sorry, but North Carolina, Florida and the rest of California just aren't hockey hotbeds.  LA has always supported the Kings to some degree.

You can relate because you were without a team for a while after the Stars (nee North Stars) left.  Imagine how frustrating it is as a guy that used to go to 10 games a year (as a student yet) and watch Carolina average realistically about 4500 fans per game.  Even when the Jets set the record for futility in a season (longest winless streak ever), we still averaged about 12000 fans per game in a horrible building.  That jumped to about 13500 when they were playing well.  I'd have seasons if they were still here.

No offense to the great hockey fans in the US, but much more so than baseball or basketball, the NHL is simply not meant to be in the US to the extent it is.  The average US viewer gets less excited about hockey than they do bowling.  Keep it in the US where it belongs, bring it back to Canada where it needs to be (Winnipeg, Hamilton, Quebec City) and leave it alone.  The impending strike/lockout of next year is going to be ugly and devastating.
Title: Re: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: JediMAC on May 12, 2003, 03:56 PM
Though I can't feel your pain with the time scheduling conflicts on West Cost games, I can definitely sympathize...

No idea why they can't bump the West Coast games up by at least an hour, if not more.  Doesn't seem fair at all to the the general viewing public.  My only guess is that since SoCal fans usually arrive so late to games, and it usually takes at least an hour or more to drive to most places around here with the disgustingly horrendous traffic, the NHL must be figuring that if the game was any earlier than 7:30, the arena would most likely be empty...

That's my theory anyways...   :P

I'd imagine things are even worse when you consider the Ducks rather odd propensity for enjoying going into at least one overtime in every other game they play...   ;)

See you guys in a few hours, Mr. Duck Hunter...   :-*

Well, it's 10:15pm here, and I'm still not out of work, so I guess it didn't really matter now huh?   :-\

But at least the rubber Duckies swiped another one, with two shorthanders no less!  Wow!  They just continue to impress, and have the hottest goaltender in the postseason so far, which will usually get your far in the playoffs...  Hopefully Giguere can stay hot for just a couple more weeks here...   8)

I'm still cheering for Ottawa, but...  Dang, Brodeur is good.  Not that Lalime sucks, but tonight Brodeur was great as he has been so often in the past.  Methinks the Sens were a little cocky heading into the game.

I fear though that a Giguere-Brodeur final may kill the game in the US.  7 consecutive triple overtime games all ending 1-0.  Old time hockey, Toe Blake, Eddie Shore.  Sure thing Coach.

Giguere is very hot. After watching the highlights, this man has very good eye contact with the players & the puck.
He is getting close to breaking the record for the longest shutout sequence. A record that has not been broken since Mar. 24/1936 held by Norm Smith, of Detroit. 248 min, 32 sec. Giguere has 213 min, 17 sec. A differance of 35 min, 15 sec.
Records are made to be broken. Maybe its time, maybe its not. The next game is one game not to be missed. It could be history in the making.

Imagine if the Ducks win the next game.
A shutout sweep!! :o

The fans will go Wild!.  Sorry Scott.  :-*

Boy, looks like I forgot to stop by here and say congrats to my Ducks for making the Finals!   8)  Congrats to the Wild as well for finally squeeking one past Giguere!   :P  Hope we see the Sen's in the Finals, since they've never won it all either.  Devils are old and tired news...

Hope Jiggy stays equally as torrid throughout the Finals, and we don't see a ten-year SoCal anniversary repeat performance like the Kings had when they (and Gretzky) got swept in the Finals in SoCal's only previous appearance there...   >:(

And by the way, I should let the cat out of the bag here in all honesty, and 'fess up that I made "a deal with the Devil" that I'd take a Stanley Cup here in SoCal if it meant my beloved Lakers would not 4-peat.  I actually told that to a number of my friends and co-workers out here (and the Mrs.), that if I could only have one championship this postseason, I'd rather it be the Ducks simply because SoCal may not ever have another good chance at the Cup, whereas the Lakers will definitely be right back in the playoff mix each and every year, as long as Kobe and Shaq are still around...

So since my Lakers got their butts handed to them by the "always exciting" Spurs, I can only assume that it means that the Ducks will be winning it all, since that's the deal I sold my soul for.  God (or the Devil) wouldn't dare make both of my teams lose now, would he...?  Especially after what happened to my Raiders in the Super Bowl as well...   :P   :'(

Welcome to the worlds most boring Stanley Cup final that could possibly happen.  I think Matt's chances just went up.

I would be pleased though if Brodeur got a cup in the season following the gold medal.  Nice for him.

As long as Giguere doesn't turn into a sieve, he should get the Conn Smythe.  Brodeur might steal it though.  Brodeur is now what I would consider to be a lock for the Vezina as well.  I thought Lalime with the better record might have a shot, especially with a Cup win, but that ain't gonna happen.

Game 1 tonight, I am actually pulling for the Devils...no more SoCal championships for Matt's "teams"

What's wrong Scott?  Can't handle just one more SoCal sports championship?   :-*

Geez, we even tossed the Lakers out of the mix this year, to try to even things up a little for ya'!

But I should mention (if I haven't already), that I actually made a deal with the Devil, and sold my soul several weeks back.  I was posed the question several times by different people way back when the Ducks were slapping the Wings around in the first round:

If I could only have one Championship between the Lakers and the Ducks, who would it be?

I thought about it quite honestly, and most suprisingly chose the Ducks.  Even though I've been relegated to just bandwagon status with them over the past several years, and I'm a psychotic raving lunatic Laker fan on the other hand, I decided that since this might be SoCal's only chance to win a Stanley Cup, best just to bring home the bacon while we still have an insanely HOT goalie (assuming sitting idle for the past week+ hasn't cooled Jiggy off too much).

As long as the Lakers still have Kobe and Shaq, they'll always be right in the middle of the playoff mix.  They'll win some more championships, I'm sure - so I'm not too worried about them.  The Ducks on the other hand (or the Kings for that matter), may not ever even get another sniff at the Stanley Cup Finals.  So just give us the Cup for once!   8)

I can only assume that since my Lakers got waxed, that was just a part of the master plan with the deal I made, and that the Ducks will indeed win it all now!  If they don't, then I sure as $h!t ain't handin' over my soul to the man downstairs!  Better not deal me a crushing blow twice within a matter of weeks, or there'll be hell to pay!  >:(

GO DUCKS!

Not to mention that they've now performed better than our Kings did 10 years ago (with Gretzky) when they got their butts SWEPT in the Finals!   >:(

Hmm, overtime.  Who does that favor?  I know the Ducks have been exceptionally good, but is Brodeur's experience more important?

And didn't somebody once suggest that games would be OT with the winning score being 1-0? ;)

THAT was fast.   :o  Ducks take it 1-0.  7 game series here we come.  Steve Thomas :39 into OT.  Former blackhawk?

Great break by Anaheim, very pretty play but Brodeur made a superb save, giving up a big rebound and then let the shot in the five hole.  Oops. :-[

That was a fun game to watch last night!  Kariya got his brains demolished in that hit by Stevens.  I was sure that was going to put him out 'til next season, especially with his history of concussions.  Then not only did he come back into the game, but he fired that laser past Brodeur for the insurance goal that effectively ended the game.  What a sweet moment that was!

I PRAY they come ready for Game 7 and the Cup makes it to SoCal for the first time ever.  C'mon now fellas, just 60 minutes (or more) away from the glory.  Bring it on home now!

Gotta love all those celebrity interviews from the sidelines, eh?!   :-*  Cuba Gooding Jr., Emilio Estevez...  Don't get much better than that!   ;D

I figured the same that he was out till next season when he finally got up at first I thought it could of ended he career (spinal/neck injury).  THe Devils goalie thought he was DEAD :o.  I'm just happy the Ducks didn't get into any fights over it causing them to have to kill penalties and I like the way the crowd booed Stevens everytime he touched the puck.  I think that the Ducks will play alot better in Jersey tommorrow then they have since they are due to win a game in Jeresy, 0-16 >:(.

I saw Cuba Gooding Jr. and his peep rally of the crowd reminded me of the Oscars when he won.

Sorry, I've been busy jumping back off the bandwagon...   ;D   :P

I kid, I kid...  Ugh.  Another heartbreaker - and this time it really was a heartbreaker, unlike when the favored Raiders and Lakers both lost.  Just seemed like the Ducks were that Cinderella team that was supposed to win it all, after making such an improbable journey all the way to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals (kinda like the neighboring Angels not long ago).  But alas, it wasn't meant to be.  Winning for the first time ever in Jersey was just too much to tackle.  The Devils played great though, and deserved it.  But the Ducks put one helluva run together, and gave their fans something to really be proud of!

Tough watching Jiggy cryin' at the end there, and then getting booed by most of the classless Jersey fans in attendance...   >:(

So... how 'bout dem Dodgers?!   :-*

I think I'm going to be ill.  Damn!  Here I was hoping Selanne would finally return to Anaheim to reunite with Kariya to produce the excitement of old, and not only does that not happen, but we wind up losing Kariya in the process?!?.  Apparently the Ducks are the ones that let him go too!   ::)

Wow.  Thanks Matt :o

I was unaware that they both signed with Colorado.  Not only did Anaheim not get both of them, they released Oates as well, yes?

Well, it seems the owners are getting what they want out of free agency.  Wasn't Kariya's contract supposed to be worth 6 million to resign with Anaheim?  If so, and he signed for only 1.2 mill for a single year, I'd say he's pretty pissed off at Anaheim management.

Selanne took less too, but not such a big hit.  Down from 6.5 to 5.8 mill.  I suppose it doesn't matter much but it sure looks like Colorado is pretty pumped on winning the cup next year before the strike.

The Red Wings and Federov parted ways officially, at least according to Federov's agent.  That frees up room to sign Hatcher.  Now if only they can figure out what to do with Cujo when Hasek returns.

Back to Colorado. Will Roy come out of retirement?  Or who will they pick up for the goaltending duties?  Khabibulin was a strong rumour, but can he win a cup?  Will Cujo take a pay cut to go there?

adding by edit:  My bad, Detroit HAS signed Hatcher (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=46232)

All these hockey fanatics in here, and "Hollywood" here is going to have to be the one that brings up the fact that Sergei Federov recently signed (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/hockey/news/2003/07/19/fedorov_ducks/)... with the DUCKS!!!   :o  That was certainly a most unexpected move, to say the least!  I'm really glad to see we got another superstar to replace the recently departed Kariya at least.

I just pray that this means that Anna Kournikova will be spending more time in the Anaheim/Orange County/L.A. area!   :-*  Still have to hook up with that babe-alicious little treat!   8)

On another NHL note, Luc Robitaille just signed (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/hockey/news/2003/07/24/robitaille_kings_ap/) up for his third (and likely final) stint with the L.A. Kings.  Sure, he's past his prime now, but it's nice to see him come back "home" for his last hurrah!

And in a very bizarre, and sad, NHL footnote, anyone catch this story (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/hockey/news/2003/07/21/body_found_ap/), about the body of a former Islanders pick being found after having gone missing for 14 years?!  Ugh.   :-\

This just in!

My beloved Penguins will suck as much, if not more than last year it seems.

OK, that's no news, but it's all I'm thinking right now...  Sadly, I'll still support them as my #1 pick till they are mathematically out of it.

On a brighter note, it seems like we may wind up with a lovely Casino/Sports Complex for the Penguins to play in should the deal go through...  Of course the city, state, and private individuals involved are all being putzes about it.

Could improve uptown though, especially considering we have the oldest building in the NHL now...  And one that never got used for its intended purposes.

Oh well...  Should be fun watching young players anyway.  Some people who maybe aren't 100% corrupted yet...  Oh, and Lemieux too if he's playing.
