The guys from the @SWTVC Instagram account are back with the 2024 edition of TVC March Madness. And the window to submit your own Top 25 most wanted TVC figures has opened. It will run through the end of January, at which point the results will be tabulated. And in March they will launch the bracket tournament of the Top 64 most wanted figures from those submissions.
The general theme that the @SWTVC crew are pushing for is this - your Top 25 most wanted figures that would feature ALL NEW TOOLING. So characters like variations of previously released troopers, repaints of Mandalorian armor, or Imperial officers might not be the best candidates for this poll - but that didn't stop people from submitting characters like Pre Vizsla, whose figure used a number of parts from other Mandalorian figures.
This year you do not need to have a social media account in order to submit your own Top 25 list. You can do it via this Google doc:
SWTVC March Madness Top 25 List Submissions (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSejJ-ljKQYRJyuiW2wMd6-Kv4U8EoJDXTSVJbiNGmZ5i5MFCw/viewform?fbclid=IwAR0wLV-LrfihX4OJjk2clok9FdPNzaViAw_XccYR5lMAXnCQ3gmCOb0u5SI)
In the event that a character gets announced during the January submission window they will be disqualified from the tournament. And the Google doc will permit people to revise their Top 25 lists until submissions end at the end of January.
More details to follow about how to vote for the head to head matchups in the bracket tournament in March. IIRC you can do that in Instagram in the polls posted by the SWTVC account. There might also be an option to do that via Google docs, but that info is yet to be confirmed.

Per the guys at the @swtvc IG page, voting will be conducted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The first region had voting begin yesterday. Interesting matchups so far.

Tonnika Sisters and Sim Aloo losing in round 1 says all I need to know about this stupid bracket. Obviously the demographic of voters is PT/CW era fans as they usually dominate this thing. Add in super obvious choices like Ahsoka baddies/characters…so dumb

Plus you have the complete the 96 crowd choosing figures already made over never-before-made... SMH.
Someone mentioned on the group FB page that voting dropped between the two quarter rounds... I can see it further dropping if certain tendencies continue to happen.
In the end, it is what it is.

How dare these a holes vote for what they want in a poll.

Yes, how dare they...
As I said, in the end, it is what it is.

Round 3 Voting is Live (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSelEcuBUTxCRNxnpXECPvas3RVqc-CFeirVkuGij5mljM7RHg/viewform)
All I can say about who's in the bracket is this - people had all the time in the world to submit their lists in January to help shape who the candidates were for 2024. Take part or don't.
I was part of the crowd that dropped off with the Last Figure Standing poll because it felt stilted towards a goal that was set by the poll runners. And when that became more obvious through the voting there was a significant decline in the number of people participating. By checking out we help things go in one direction or another.
-
Yeah and high level “seeds” who showed up on those lists like the Tonnikas don’t even make Round 2? This thing is just as flawed
-
Seeding is one thing, and the votes are another. The guys at SWTVC have been transparent about their data. They've revealed the number of list submissions as well as the vote totals. 1218 people submitted top 25 lists. Round 1 saw nearly 1800 people vote. And they had over 1540 people cast votes in the second round of voting. That's actually an improvement on their participation numbers, because in the past they have not had as many people submit lists. But there have always been more people who vote on the bracket poll. The first region had 7 out of 8 favorites win. The second region had more upsets - 5 favorites and 3 underdogs won. I'm curious to see how the numbers pan out from yesterday's voting. Ultimately, the bracket voting isn't always going to reflect the seeding.
As for the Tonnikas? I voted against them. I gave up on that lost cause a long time ago. Lucasfilm has either the characters or the actors blacklisted, for whatever reason. And I refuse to continue banging my head against the wall for that particular lost cause. I actually ran into a former senior Hasbro exec at a con during the fall. He said that he tried to get them made, even down to the point of only making one of them. And Lucasfilm would not relent. He added that while the Hasbro Star Wars team has turned over since his tenure, the same people are in place at Lucasfilm licensing, and their position on the issue has almost certainly not changed.
Plus, I voted for the Jedi Temple Guards because I actually like them! I have ever since I saw them turn up in Clone Wars. And when the plot point about the Grand Inquisitor having been a temple guard came to light in Rebels? It raised their stock even more for me.
I think I prefer this format to Last Figure Standing. That poll felt like a card trick, where ultimately you were having a card forced on you. The binary choices of a bracket poll give this more of a sense of clarity.
-
I’m a simple man. I have a Jedi Temple Guard. I don’t have the Tonnika Sisters.
So I vote Tonnika Sisters.
-
Voting for the Tonnika Sisters is a wasted vote because Hasbro will never make them for....reasons.
I want them too, but outside some insane Haslab with them being an extremely high level of backers, I don't see them happening.
-
At least Stan Solo has Kenner-style Tonnika sisters on the way. Looking forward to that.

NORTHEAST QUADRANT RESULTS
Luke Skywalker (Tatooine) 926 VS Nute Gunray (Mustafar) 550
Darth Malak 633 VS Plo Koon 843

Baze Malbus 850 VS Mara Jade 626
Only 2 upsets! I'm pleasantly surprised that I got those 2 correct. My own picks went 6 - 2. I was hoping Carson Teva was going to upset Pong Krell, and Shasa Tiel couldn't pull out a win against Werner Herzog.
-
The 4th quadrant results are in:
Shin Hati - 1285 VS Q9-0 (Zero) 560
Savage Opress - 1135 VS See-Threepio - 710

Echo (Bad Batch) - 1066 VS Ki-Adi Mundi - 779
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Master) - 963 VS Fifth Brother Inquisitor - 862
Luthen Rael - 1316 VS Princess Leia Organa (Jabiim) - 529
All of the favorites won this round - a first for the tournament this year. And it looks like this round also got the most votes of any round, with over 1800 people taking part. And the closest split was between Obi-Wan Kenobi from ROTS and the Fifth Brother, with 101 votes separating them.
-
I missed this round but other than that Fifth Brother, the winners line up with how I'd have voted.
-
I had 2 misses - I picked EV-9D9 over Tech, and Ki-Adi Mundi over Echo. The round of 32 is looking like there will be some interesting matchups. Here's a preview:

The three upsets are a really big surprise!

There's so much ugliness going on for these polls (and the Last Figure Standing as well) between the OT and New Media crowds. Honestly I think the whole thing is kind of trash, and I suspect there's some questionable voting at this point. Ordinarily I wouldn't feel that way (and I'm just as happy with new media stuff as I am with OT), but the comment sections are a dumpster fire and it really seems like a "versus" thing rather than a genuine fan poll. It's too bad because I really feel like the SWTVC group puts a ton of effort and dedication into this.
-
Well, that’s the internet in a nutshell, isn’t it? Engagement with users usually boils down to people getting angry. Nuanced conversations are lost on a lot of people. And tribal disagreements grow into something ugly. Witness the oppositional clash between generations of fans.

IMHO, there is just too much Star Wars now to ever get a nice uniform agreement on fan polls anymore.
Hasbro is so fractured trying to serve all it's masters (TVC vs TBS; OT vs PT/TCW vs ST vs D+ vs EU/video games). Too many movies/shows and not enough basic figure slots to serve everyone what they want in a large enough quantity. It's a bummer, but it's reality.

Rob nailed it a few days ago and it still resonates why I get pissed every year at this stupid thing…I would never ever put resculpts on my list nor would I put obvious choices like Baylen and Shin who I was surprised weren’t announced today! But reading all of the comments it just feels like the Fan’s Choice Polls back in the day where weird ass voting happened last minute and results never felt fair to the online pulse of the fan boards of the day. So dumb and not sure why I care so much.

I agree. There are definitely some generational divides among fans. And while online communities can be great for bringing people together, the tribalism that it breeds can get a little ugly. So that segmenting has been a natural development in large part because of the timespan from the beginnings of the franchise to the current day.
Everyone has their own criteria for their votes. For me? There's a level of exhaustion with the OT because of how long I've been in this. How many times can we go back to the well with some characters? Some figure manufacturing developments have left a lot of older figures looking just that - old. But sometimes to update something just for one little tweak seems a bit much. Something that drove me crazy in the TVC communities was this obsession with rocker ankles. If a figure didn't have rocker ankles, then it couldn't possibly be considered perfect. That level of obsession was too much for me, and it got me more interested in characters that had not been made before in the interest of getting something that felt more fresh.
Scott - I share your frustration that high profile characters and resculpts are part of these. But something that trends in the MM poll have shown is that there are some consistent wants. A number of characters have been in the running every year since the SWTVC guys started this whole thing. Should Baylan and Shin have already been made by now? Absolutely! But I think their absence should also be a reality check for collectors. We're not in the golden days of 2005 - 2013 anymore.

I feel like a dinosaur. The only OT thing on there is Obi-Wan Kenobi, which we have a dozen different versions of.
Ultimately, I'd like them to make almost all of the 64 figures in the entire bracket... Hasbro is really missing out with their limited selection.

Yup, 1000%
-
I think the limited presence with OT items in this year's bracket is indicative of a number of things:
-The OT generation is aging out as a cohort
-Hasbro has had almost 30 years to cover the OT through the years, and they've covered an exhaustive number of characters. So who's left?
-What OT characters would be truly new in the 3.75" scale? And can you rally people behind that character to support them? To me this is a big one.
There's also the matter of some of the rules / guidelines that the @SWTVC guys have put in place. The big one? Contestants should be ones that demand all new tooling! That guideline eliminates A LOT of potential characters. Imperial Officers? Gone. Rebel Pilots? Gone. Troopers? Most are gone from contention because they're either potential kitbashes or repaints.
There have also been some movements going on within the TVC focus segment of collecting. The whole "Make the Mains" movement is a big one. And it's because a lot of the OT main characters - particularly from A NEW HOPE - have not been made in a long time, and their older renditions look a little rough in comparison with TVC figures released within the past 3 years.
I was really pleased to see a couple of background characters from Jabba's Palace make it into the bracket this year. But I wasn't exactly eager to get a Fozec. And while I've had Shasa Tiel on my wishlist forever, that one got eliminated pretty quickly.
I completely agree with one thing that I've seen circulating. And that we shouldn't have to put Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati in a fan poll because Hasbro should already have them coming. But I think the state of the line is such that we can't take anything for granted anymore.

Baylan and Shin it is I suppose. What incredibly obvious choices.

Baylan and Shin it is I suppose. What incredibly obvious choices.
These days? I don't think we can take anything for granted. Which is why I went that route.
That being said? I think there's certainly the potential where Hasbro is holding these for a reveal at SDCC. It's one of the big annual, in-person events for Hasbro. And I can see where Hasbro would want a big applause moment during the panel.
-
I didn't mean obvious that they'll win from here, I just meant obvious choices out of the 64 we started with. Like, this is your chance to tell Hasbro you want them to make something that hasn't been made and as a group we picked something that they surely know we want made.

I feel like the future of OT deep cut figures is going to be the Pulse exclusive carded multi-packs. Stuff like the Skiff Guard 3-pack (tied to the Barge) and the Jabba Goons 4-pack (tied to the Jabba playset). Both those sets delivered all-new OT characters to our collections.
Old man OT collectors can afford a $70-80 hit for a carded 4-pack of stuff that has no chance at basic retail - something like:
- Baniss Keeg/Tzizvvt/Hammerhead/Wuher
- Fozec/Shasa Tiel/Yotts Oren/Gallid
Feels like something like that, where they can charge a little more ($20 each) and control the volume as an open pre-order on Pulse, has a much more realistic chance of getting all-new OT characters made.
If Hasbro can't find TVC slots for characters that already got BS6" figures like Baze, Bohdi, Luthen, Bix, Dedra, 5th Brother, Tala, etc., then how are they ever going to find a TVC slot for dudes like Fozec or Tzizvvt? :-\
-
Some historic stats. Bear in mind that some characters have appeared in multiple MM tournaments.
MM 2021 (First Year)
Made or On The Way: 36
Unmade: 28
MM 2022
Made or On The Way: 27
Unmade: 37
MM 2023
Made or On The Way: 20
Unmade: 44
Those are pretty good numbers historically, despite the repeat appearances by a number of characters.

I agree. The themed multipacks are an excellent way to target certain segments of the fanbase. And a Cantina themed set seems more like an inevitable offering, and not just a theoretical exercise. Especially if the rumors about the Haslab campaign are true.
Side note - I can see the potential for Hasbro to tick off some of the "Make the Mains" characters in support of a Cantina. After all, you need several of them for that specific scene!

#1 BAYLAN SKOLL VS #15 PONG KRELL

Pong Krell? ???
Huh. More power to the TCW fans, I guess for rallying behind their guy.
-
Not something I'm in a hurry for, but I'll take it over another Vader, Clone or Mandalorian.
-
I'm surprised that Krell has so much support a dozen years after appearing in the Umbara arc! But between Facebook at the RS forums? There seems to be a good deal of support for him.
-
Not something I'm in a hurry for, but I'll take it over another Vader, Clone or Mandalorian.
Totally agree. I'd rather have key unmade figures from current/recent media (Andor, Ahsoka, Bad Batch), but I'll take any new figure over more rehashed stuff.
At the very least I do think Pong Krell is an interesting character design.
-
I ended up voting for Pong Krell in the finals... even though I'd rather have Baylan in my collection.
Just on principle I didn't want to vote for two of the main characters from a new media show that has been out for less than a year, especially since they are both lightsaber wielders. Hasbro and LFL should know that we want these and they should already be in the line anyways. It's not surprising to see the fanbase so divided over this poll, that's really par for the course for Star Wars fandom these days. I do wish more people would look at these as an opportunity to vote in never-before-made characters or figures that Hasbro wouldn't likely consider otherwise, but realistically I want 61 of the 64 figures on that list, and was mostly fine with the starting choices. It's sad that it will take so long to get any of them made with the way the line is today.
I was really hoping Baze Malbus or Luthen would win, those were at the top of my list. But I do like the look of him and enjoyed the episode arc he was in. I'd happily buy him if Hasbro ever made him.

I voted out both of these characters in the first round, so for the final I put it down to who I would pick up at the store if I could only take one.
I haven't seen the episodes of Clone Wars with Pong Krell. Baylon was one of the only characters in the Ahsoka series I liked. So I went with Baylon. If I was putting money on the outcome, though, I would probably go the other way.

At the very least I do think Pong Krell is an interesting character design.
He's Dexter Jettster with lightsabers. But still better than another Ahsoka!

Oh man, yet another opportunity for a Hasbro double-dip / parts re-use. No wonder they planted votes to get him into the final two. >:D

That’s the spirit!
