Vintage Kenner / Awesome read on yellowing plastics
« on: January 14, 2007, 05:11 PM »
I read an article on plastics from a design related forum.  It focused on SNES system cases and older Macintosh computers, but some of the points uncovered by the author relate to vintage Stormtroopers and vehicles.

This goes way beyond simple answers like UV and tobacco.  Check it out, and if this needs merged with another thread that's cool.  I tried a search but didn't see anywhere that seemed like a good place to add this.

I'm posting this, against all better judgment. It's clean and safe for work, just a stretch.

Watto's Junk Yard / WSJ: Apple switches to Intel
« on: June 5, 2005, 10:09 PM »
Grrrrr.

Quote
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) is expected to announce Monday that it will begin shifting its Macintosh computer line next year to Intel Corp. chips, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site on Sunday, citing people familiar with the situation.

The move would be a major change in strategy by Apple, a high-profile win for Intel (INTC) and a blow to International Business Machines Corp. (IBM). and Freescale Semiconductor Inc. (FSL), suppliers of the PowerPC chips long used in its Macintosh systems.

Apple executives were not immediately available for comment.

Apple's decision, which comes after years of industry speculation and behind-the-scenes lobbying by Intel, could cause disruptions for Macintosh users, the paper said.

Application programs will have to be adapted to run on Intel's x86 chips, the calculating engines used in most computers running Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Windows operating system.

Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, is expected to explain the shift Monday during a keynote speech at the company's annual software developers conference in San Francisco, said the people familiar with the situation.

Could cause disruptions for Macintosh users? No ****. >:(

The move from 68040 chips to PowerPC chips in the mid-90's was a ******* nightmare. OS 9 to OS X migration was a total wankfest, as ******** like Epson and Umax spent months trying to decide if they were going to invest in a major software rewrite to continue to support the Mac platform. Epson did, Umax didn't.

Well, there goes an otherwise productive office environment. If OS 10.4 Tiger wasn't going to make my Epson 1200 and Brother MFC 9600 obsolete, this stroke of genius certainly will. What other peripherals will it take with it? My Wacom tablet? My Sony Ericsson mobile phone? My Linksys wireless router? My Sony digital camera, or my Canon video camera? Hell, I'm not even confident my iPod will work with whatever Steve Jobs "officially" pulls out of his ass tomorrow.

Star Wars Action Figures / Busted VOTC Leia - bummer
« on: April 7, 2005, 02:04 PM »
My daughter's VOTC Leia lost a leg last night. This wasn't even played with rough - she's very good to her toys. Crap!

Any advice? I'm planning on buying another, but I'd like to try to fix this one...

If I pop her open, there isn't enough material on her lost leg to try to tap a screw into, And I'm sure that gluing the peg back on wouldn't solve anything long term play wise.

Maybe a customer service channel?

Anyone ever think of building one of these, or something like one of these?

EDIT: I didn't really think about it when I made this post, but I should have noted that this image came from the Toys R Gus site, linked below. It wasn't my intention to leave this uncredited. If there are any objections from any side involved, I'll gladly remove the link. Just realized this, sorry.

Women's Day Space Station

I remember seeing that magazine as a six year old. We kept the magazine around for years, we even ordered the plans.

My dad didn't have a jig saw, or the ability to work with the acrylic, so he kept putting off making an attempt. At some point, my grandfather made something similar that became the foundation for all my SW ship landing needs.

Now I've got kids, and I'm wondering about making something like this that would give a "neutral" place (vs. a specific diorama location like Hoth, Dagobah, etc.) for all the ships and characters from both trilogies to have adventures.

So, what have you done or thought about doing along these lines?

Watto's Junk Yard / Pretty In Pink 2: Duckie's Revenge
« on: April 6, 2005, 04:39 PM »
NOTE: If you came in here thinking this thread was about Colman's sweater, you're wrong. You're welcome to stay, but you're still wrong.

Alright, I'm more excited about this over-a-year-away movie than I should let myself be - because there is no way it won't suck. Even with the returning cast.

Director John Hughes has announced that classic '80s movie Pretty In Pink is to get a sequel.

The teen film followed high school student Andie, who developed a crush on the school's new guy, while her friend Duckie, who secretly loves Andie, is forced to step aside.

The sequel, which is planned for a 2006 release, will show fans what has changed for the characters now that their high school days are over. The movie's original stars - Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy and John Cryer - have all agreed to appear.

Watto's Junk Yard / Baby Russell arrived, 03/20/05
« on: March 20, 2005, 11:39 PM »
Just a quick post to say we had our baby today, late from the due date of the 16th.

We had a son at 7:30am, 9lbs 10oz! This kid is huge, way bigger than our first two.

No solid name yet, but we're almost set.

There were some complications early on with oxygen saturation for him, but he's been off breathing devices since 5pm today and we expect to have him in our room in the morning.

More on all this later, thanks to all those who have pm'd through the week. The implications of what it means to have two sons and lightsabers around the house is just beginning to sink in...

I've got a Linksys wireless router that let's me connect two laptops to the internet and other computers in our home.

I never set it up securely in the install, because when I tried to add MAC (not Macintosh, just the web MAC acronym) addresses I had trouble accessing the network, so I just yanked the security settings.

Over the last week, I've noticed someone (a neighbor, no doubt) has been accessing our wifi. I can tell when they're on, because the Windows networking options come up in my network browser. Typically, I only see those when visiting a client who has that type of network.

So I'd like to lock this baby down and kick them the hell out.

I want to add my two MAC addresses in, but I'm not sure how to find them. I'd also like authorized "guests" to be able to use the network (probably by WEP) with a password.

I did a google search, and I looked through the Linksys site, and a few other forums I visit - but couldn't find a clear set of instructions. Does anyone here know of a resource online that explains this set up well, step by step, preferably with screen caps of the interface window?

Just had to shop this around here. Thanks in advance and stuff. Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.

A Scanner Darkly

Whenever I get a darkish image from my scanner I just adjust the curves in Photoshop... Maybe this movie will show me some new tricks.

Who'll see this? I will.

Watto's Junk Yard / Superman is a dick!
« on: February 8, 2005, 10:33 AM »
From the website of the same name:

List of more pratical uses Superboy can make of a machine that can see through time:

1.) Betting on the outcomes of sporting events.
2.) Forseeing natural diasters and catastrophhe.
3.) Letting Bruce Wayne know that his parents are going to be gunned down in front of his very eyes in a filthy alley, you dick!

Watto's Junk Yard / Attn: Guinea Pigs, website up for critique
« on: January 27, 2005, 06:27 PM »
I consulted on a website for a client and I'd like some feedback from outside our industry.

If you're interested, check it out here.

Some things to consider:

Message - is it clear what this group does, what kind of company are they?

Usability - can you find your way around? How does it "feel"?

Personality - what do you think this group is like on a personal level?

Errors - if something is broken or spelled rawng, I'd like to know.

I'd also like to know what computer, os, browser and connection speed you're using.

Thanks in advance for playing.

Hey! My "Wookie Subt-i-tles" thread reads "Wookie Sub***les"... C'mon, I get "Stupid **** from the Internet" as a subject line in email notification from that thread... Can we adjust the filter to allow "subtitle"?

Watto's Junk Yard / Apple's Tipping Point and Marketing 101
« on: January 18, 2005, 08:19 PM »
Actually, this is a little more advanced than a 100 level course - and really interesting. Try to keep up. ;)

This fascinating diagram is found at the following site.

I work everyday as a consultant to companies trying to find their niche or an opportunity to leverage their equity in the market. We spend a lot of time together trying to articulate where they're at as companies, who they're trying to reach and where they're trying to take their brands. I've followed Apple as a user since 1989, and observed a lot of innovation through hard times - this chart makes sense that they are in the middle of executing a plan that will take the better part of a decade to implement. I'm excited by their recent successes.
