Title: Keeping up with the Joneses
Post by: Matt on February 24, 2008, 06:01 PM
I was thinking "my God, there's just a ****-ton of 'different' Indy figures to choose from in the new line," so I thought I'd fun to try to keep track of them all.  Originally I just wanted to compare all the different 3 3/4" versions, but for the sake of completeness, I went ahead and included everything.

Basic figures:
Wave 1 (Raiders):  2
*with Fertility Idol (Carded) (http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&album=Hasbro%2FIndiana_Jones%2FFigures%2FWave_1&pic=Indiana_Jones_2_01.jpg&dispsize=800&start=0) (Loose) (http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&album=Hasbro%2FIndiana_Jones%2FFigures%2FWave_1&pic=Indiana_Jones_2_02.jpg&dispsize=800&start=0)
*Cairo, jacketless, with Whip-Cracking Action!  (Carded) (http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&album=Hasbro%2FIndiana_Jones%2FFigures%2FWave_1&pic=Indiana_Jones_01.jpg&dispsize=800&start=0) (Loose) (http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&album=Hasbro%2FIndiana_Jones%2FFigures%2FWave_1&pic=Indiana_Jones_02.jpg&dispsize=800&start=0)
Wave 2 (Crystal Skull):  2
*hatless, jacketless, with rocket launcher  (Carded) (http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&album=Hasbro%2FIndiana_Jones%2FFigures%2FCrystal_Skull&pic=Indian_Jones_2_01.jpg&dispsize=800&start=0) (Loose) (http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&album=Hasbro%2FIndiana_Jones%2FFigures%2FCrystal_Skull&pic=Indian_Jones_2_02.jpg&dispsize=800&start=0)
*removable hat, with Crystal Skull  (Carded) (http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&album=Hasbro%2FIndiana_Jones%2FFigures%2FCrystal_Skull&pic=Indiana_Jones_01.jpg&dispsize=800&start=0)  (Loose) (http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&album=Hasbro%2FIndiana_Jones%2FFigures%2FCrystal_Skull&pic=Indiana_Jones_02.jpg&dispsize=800&start=0)
Wave 3 (Last Crusade):  2

For those keeping score, that's eight different 3 3/4" Indys available on launch day!  (http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/smilies/lol.gif)

I was trying to figure out which one of those was "the best," if there was such a thing, or if you'd have to buy two or more Indys to have the Ultimate Indiana Jones Action Figure, by mixing and matching parts and accessories and all.

(http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/7531/indyidolja1.jpg) (http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/9088/indywhipfc7.jpg)
(http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/831/dlxindypitfalloz1.jpg) (http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/3969/dlxindyidoltrapiw9.jpg)
(http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/6819/dlxindyarkrf6.jpg) (http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/8881/dlxindyhorseax8.jpg)

(http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/2809/oldindyrocketou6.jpg) (http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/3233/oldindyskullfg9.jpg)

Which one's the best?  Which one's the worst?

Thoughts?  (Besides "you have entirely too much time on your hands, Matt," please.)  (http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/smilies/lol.gif)

You have entirely too much time on your hands, Matt.  :)

I really like the whipping-action Indy. The Map Room Disguise figure also looks great. So does the one with the rocket launcher. The others I could pass on.

I think that the crystal skull figure without the hat has the best face sculpt.

I'm going to go with getting several different Indy's to make an Ultimate...

I like the Head and Hat and whip on Action Feature Indy,

And probably use the Regular Indy for everything else.  Depends on what is under the robes of Map Room Indy.

Depends on what is under the robes of Map Room Indy.

You can see a bit of it here:

Body looks decent; hopefully the head comes off in one piece.

I think that the crystal skull figure without the hat has the best face sculpt.

From what we've seen so far, I thought the face sculpt looked best on that figure as well.  Otherwise, the articulation looks really nice on the initial (jacketed) Indy from ROTLA, as well as the Crystal Skull version.  The face (or more so, the eyes) just look wonky on the pics of that SA ROTLA Indy, hopefully the final product will be better.

Several of these I don't need... these two are easily the best though I think -

(http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/2809/oldindyrocketou6.jpg) (http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/3233/oldindyskullfg9.jpg)

I'll get those two, the one with the Ark and the horse, will probably pass on the other four... but might cave in and get him with the Idol.

That old Indy with the rocket launcher looks really damn good, doesn't it?  If the heads are swappable with the Raiders Indys, that could make for a bitchin' Cairo Indy.  As far as the one with the Skull, everything looks good, except for the hat.  I just can't get past how ridiculously large that fedora looks.

Some people at The Raven boards were talking about how good the two Deluxe versions from the Temple were, mostly because the holsters were smaller.  I do agree that the working holsters on some of the other figs are a little on the big side, but they don't seem so bad to me.  What really bugs me about those two Deluxe figures are the unarticulated knees.  I'm sorry--all the vintage Indys from 25 years ago had working knees, so there's no reason that any of these new ones shouldn't.  Outside of their accessories, those two Deluxe figures look completely redundant to me.  The Temple Trap Indy doesn't even have his European Carryall, for Christ's sake!

Yeah, if the heads are swappable, the Indy w/ ark will make a great, non jacketed figure.  I have a question here...wouldn't it make sense for Hasbro to spend the time and effort to make ONE excellent Indy face/head (per movie) and the just put it on all of the figures?  It seems silly to resculpt the head over and over again.
Title: Re: Keeping up with the Joneses
Post by: Jesse James on February 28, 2008, 01:59 AM
I've never quite understood Hasbro's thinking on that myself...

Figure production can take place at various factories, so parts may not be swappable because not all molds are in the same factory and all, but at the end of the day I'd think Hasbro would want to strive for as much "universal design" as possible with all their figures in all their toy lines...  Star Wars included, but Indy's really exemplifying why it's a benefit.

Most other compaies try this...  I know 21st's figures are pretty universal, at least by line, and that really can help with repaints and stuff.

Maybe we should ask about it in the Hasbro  Q&A

Yep, so far that looks like the figure of the year to me... beating out anything in Star Wars too.  I can see myself getting at least 4-5 of this figure.

If the heads are swappable with the Raiders Indys, that could make for a bitchin' Cairo Indy.

I'm hoping so, but even if they're not, maybe a quick dremeling will make it possible.

As far as the one with the Skull, everything looks good, except for the hat.  I just can't get past how ridiculously large that fedora looks.

I thought the same thing.  Why's the hat so damn big?

It is supposed to be removable... most of the "good" looking hat sculpts are the non-removable ones.  Most of the ones that appear "oversized" are the removable ones.

I thought I had a list in my Toy Fair notes about which ones are removable and which aren't.  I'll see if I can find it and post a list...

The first Indy will have multiple versions, since Toy Fair had multiple so the crappy head sculpt won't be a problem. Another of which can be seen here: http://www.cooltoyreview.com/photo.asp?image=http://www.cooltoyreview.com/tf2008/Hasbro/IJ_IndyROTLA.jpg&text=
I plan on getting both KOCS, the jacket Raiders & Map Room.

Another new pic of the Crystal Skull Indy tonight, courtesy our friends at the Internet media site Cool Toy Review (http://cooltoyreview.com/story/front/TF2008_PR_Hasbro_Indiana_Jones_112813.asp):

Apparently it has a "Hat Hovering Just Above Head" action feature! (http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/smilies/lol.gif)

SPOILER ALERT:

Apparently Indy's left arm gets severed at the elbow during the events of the Crystal Skull!!!   :o  Holy crap I didn't see that one coming.

Yeah, the hat's pretty crappy, but the headsculpt/likeness is really great. I wonder if another Indy figure has a removable hat that's a better fit and can be swapped.

Thought this was worth posting here.  Some dude took two of the Deluxe Indys, and with a little head-swappage and accessory removal, made a pretty swell, neutrally-posed, superbly-articulated Cairo Indy:

The body is the Deluxe Map Room Indy (minus robes) and the head is from one of the Deluxe Temple Indys (pitfall trap, I believe).

And apparently the Deluxe Map Room Indy uses the same body as the Crystal Skull Indy with RPG.

That looks pretty good.

I expect to see a lot of people (including myself) doing parts swaps with the Indy figures (and others, but especially Indy at first)... nice that these seem to be so compatible with SW figures in terms of customizing.  It might not be too difficult to make a few Cairo street folk too by combining different parts from these figures with a few SW heads.

A few Cairo street folk would look great in the $400 "Various Plazas and Alleyways of Cairo" playset/diorama that I'm currently in the process of petitioning Hasbro for.

Think bigger Matt!   :)

Or, think in terms of more vintage-esque stuff (which I'm pretty sure you're a fan of).

I'd be happy seeing an updated version of this -

Maybe instead of Monkey Man, some other Arab that can carry a basket or one of the ones that carries Marian off.  Or even a Nazi in a suit.

I like it!  But more importantly, will kids like it?

Answer:  No.  The kids would not like it.  They would love it.  And there is nothing the kids would love more than a "Basket-Carrying Arab" action figure.

I now want a basket carrying arab figure...  :-\

Actually...  Wait, they're making the basket carrying Arab.  He's in the Marion/Arab 2-pack.  There were a ton of the non-describe white-robed/black masked arabs...  That was why Indy couldn't tell who had Marion in the basket I thought.

I would like a Well of Souls and Maproom...  :(  Neither I'm hopeful to get.  I wish someone would cast the maproom or something.

Matt, I think chances are a lot of kids aren't going to even like the figures.

Jesse I've been eyeing a few parts to vintage Indy playsets on ebay lately, like this part of the map room for under $10.00.  I think with just a bit of work it could be turned into something that would work fine with the modern line.

Good call on the 2-pk... I'm thinking that I'll get a couple of those... too bad Marian doesn't have articulated knees though.

So after a few of us have picked up some of the Indy product, what's the consensus of the best Indy figure out so far?  I haven't picked up any of the deluxes aside from the Ark pack (actually, didn't see any other Indy deluxes yet) - so I'm not sure how those might be.  I guess the KOTCS jacketless version might be the best as far as the head goes - although I wish we had an "ultimate" ROTLA (or "original") Indy.  What's the best one so far for everyone?
Title: Re: Keeping up with the Joneses

I did pick up the temple trap (ROTLA) Indy and from what I'd seen it had my vote.  I was all set to open it when I noticed it didn't have a thumb on the right hand :-\  It doesn't look broken off, so I need to look for another with both a thumb and good eyes.  Rather annoyed at that.

I'm not sure about how poseable the figure from that deluxe pack is either though, so I'll reserve judgement until I open it.

The only negative on the single carded figure are the facial paint apps.  You need to be picky and find one with a good paint job.  But it's well articulated, the holster, while a little big, works well and so does the whip holder.  He has a rolled whip and one to pose with and the should bag also.  And the idol is awesome.  It's really a good figure.

The Deluxe Indy w/ the Ark has all the articulation you need; ball/socket head,  ball shoulders, elbows, knees and ankles, swivel waste and swivel hips.  Soft goods robe, satchel, coiled whip and belt holder, pistol and a pretty nice turbaned head sculpt.  The Ark is really nice as well but I really wish it had the pole slots.

So, now that these have been out for a few weeks - which is everyone's favorite Indy of the ones that have been released so far?  I hadn't looked real closely at the pegs recently, but noticed at our Target yesterday that there wasn't a single basic Indy on the pegs - surprising considering there are four versions out there.

The one with the skull is by far the best, provided you find one with a good paint job on the eyes.

If I had to pick one, I'd pick the Raiders Idol figure.

But really, for me, it's a toss-up between the RotLA Idol and KotCS Skull Indy figures.  The Skul figure has the benefit of the removable hat but the Raiders figure has the working holster (which I like).

With the exception of the whip cracking Indy, they're all really nice in their own way.  Including the Deluxe Indy from the Ark and Horse sets.  I'm not surprised that he's hard to find in some stores.  He's THE guy and none of the figures suck.

Oddly enough, I like the whip-cracking Indy the most.  :)

But I haven't found the KotCS Indy w/skull yet, so I'll probably end up liking that one the most once I buy it.
