Title: Deluxe Series 3 - Tatooine
Post by: Dan on June 20, 2009, 08:24 AM
So, with all the sequel deluxeness, where is the original original?

my first guesses/wants

Ceremonial Han
Ceremonial Leia
Ceremonial Chewie
Dodanna
Hood up Obi Wan
Wuher

Or would they delve in to the early bird kit and do some re-releases of Chewie, Leia, etc?

I think a landspeeder would be a cool build-a-kuby-

What do you think?

The landspeeder as the vehicle.

Maybe another Sandtrooper - with a re-release of the black pauldron?

Hammerhead is the one I'd really want.

I'm not sure how I feel about them redoing the figures in the early-bird set, since I paid a fair amount to get those. But I'll also have to admit that they don't really fit in that well with the rest of the range in terms of their style and quality.

Post by: JediJman on June 22, 2009, 01:02 AM
I'm sure it's unlikely, but I'd like to see Deluxe Series 3 like this:

Wuher
Hem Dazon
Lak Sivrak
Feltipern Trevagg
Labria
Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead)

And the BAF could be the bar!

How about:

-Owen Lars
-Beru Lars
-Gonk Droid
-Sandtrooper
-Jawa
-CZ-3

...to build a dewback. Are they doing chase figures in the deluxe series? If so, here are some ideas:

-Biggs Darklighter - Tosche Station (in Owen Lars box)
-Camie (in Beru Lars box)
-Power Droid - vintage deco (in Gonk Droid box)

I thought about some of these, but hope they stay away from remaking previously done figures like Jawa and Sandy.  If they're going to remake figs, then I hope they just go with ANH Luke, Leia, Chewie, R2, etc. for the masses.

Post by: karamazov80 on June 22, 2009, 10:56 AM
I think this set is a bit tougher than the others, because there weren't that many main characters or drastically different outfits/incarnations of characters from ANH that we didn't already get.  The ceremonial garb is one possibility, but they only appeared for about a minute, and those aren't particularly interesting or different, IMO.

I say one or two more "bar" aliens/monsters, possibly another new empire goon, maybe an update of "classic" Leia and Luke, though I would hope that they would have enough to set them apart from their "Early Bird" releases.  "Old Ben" with hood up could be a nice variant to own, though kind of dull.

Post by: Sir Real on June 22, 2009, 01:07 PM
I'd be all for a reissues of the figures that originally came with paper costumes: orignal Leia in white dress, and those ROTJ figures (not part of ANH, I know), of Luke and Leia on the speederbikes, replacing the paper with plastic costume parts.

As long as we eventually get a Hammerhead and Gonk Droid, the rest is gravy :)

I wouldn't be surprised to see a landspeeder but i would much prefer a dewback. I wish we were getting a Wampa and Taun Taun instead of the at-st
Title: Re: Deluxe Series 3, ANH (we hope)
Post by: karamazov80 on June 22, 2009, 01:37 PM
Yeah, my issue with the AT-ST is that you shouldn't be able to see the Kubrick driver inside very well (unless there is a little step for him to poke out of the top).  In that sense, it is nice to have a Kubrick-scaled vehicle, but I would prefer something where you can show off the figures.  I would prefer a mini-Landspeeder from ANH, or one of the creatures that Evenflow describes over something where you can't see the figure.
Title: Re: Deluxe Series 3, ANH (we hope)
Post by: icruise on June 22, 2009, 02:47 PM
The AT-ST is cool, but it doesn't exactly scream "ESB" to me, and I agree that there are some other things that might have been better. Of course they don't all lend themselves to the "build-a-figure" concept as well. In any case this does not make me want to get all of the figures in the series in the same way that Jabba and his throne does (although I still may do that).

Driver - nobody mentioned an AT-ST driver yet - chase figure? another wave?  :P

I'm also on the fence about hanging on to the AT-ST. I'll be after the figures but whether I pick them up without the AT-ST parts or trade/sell the AT-ST when in hand I'm not sure  :-\

I'm liking the gonk and hammerhead scheme, and a dewback would be excellent, especially if the sandy fit inside like the vintage kenner unit!  ;D

I'd love to get a Dewback as the Build-A-Figure to go with the Sandtroopers from Series 2.  However, I would be even more happy to get a bunch of Cantina Aliens in this Series release and the parts to build the Cantina bar.

Dewback, Bantha, Landspeeder are all reasonable and would be interesting.  How about a Sandcrawler?  Too large I'd think.  A hut?  Moisture vaporator is too simple.

Am hoping it's not a prequel wave though.

And YES PLEASE to a Hammerhead.  I wonder what's in the Death Star Dlx S4?  Most of those figures have all been done...  ???

This is great news! Here's hoping for that hammerhead, maybe a muftak, and an obi wan with the hood up (although that could be a death star scene figure too). If this isn't just A New Hope wave, maybe tessek or ree yees are a possibility. Please don't trot out too many main characters, I really don't want to see another chewbacca in this wave, and anyone who doesn't already have han didn't try hard enough.

Yeah, since you've got Ben and Tusken here and Vader and Leia in S4, those would all be candidate to do just like Kenner did.  Interesting spin on them and not surprising given Medicom's love for Kenner/vintage, but it really would have been nice to get more "NEW" figures than just Garindan.  :-\

I love all three of those choices.  Here’s what I’d love to see:

-Luke Tatooine Telescoping Lightsaber
-Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alternate Hair color) Telescoping Lightsaber
-Gonk Droid in place of R5-D4
-Some cantina alien in place of Garindan (lots of options here, Hammerhead tops my list)

That said, I’d be shocked if one of the variants wasn’t just a weathered or different pauldron Sandtrooper.  It’s just too easy.  They could also make a Tusken variant with rifle instead of gaffi stick or maybe make him a hollow cheek variant.

I'd like a hood up Ben and Garindan is a fine addition as others have said, though not what was hoped for.

As for the Sandtrooper, I just painted one of the orange pauldron's black and it was done.  New weapon might make it interesting enough though.

Was it added to the SE versions or was it there in the original too?

I remember that being a pack-in with the POTF2 Cantina set that had the cardboard background and came with the Sandtrooper, hooking into the figure's shoulder with a clear plastic support.  I can't remember when it came out so it could be just from the SE but might have been in the original movie as well.

This wave may be our best chance for Momaw, maybe in kenner vintage colors.

April is a long time away- I hope DX 4 is in August 2011 like the releases this year.

Much as I'd enjoy Dr. Evazan I think I would very much rather see them get another vintage figure out.  So my hope is for a Momaw as well.

I'd prefer Momaw as well. But seeing how this dastardly AT-ST driver has performed so far, it seems like the much-beloved Hammerhead would be impossible to get a hold of as a 1:96 chase.

Think there's any chance they'd do a Cantina aliens box set to coincide with DX3?

I don't know?  I guess I'd rather not see it unless they aren't duplicating chase figures.  It's great for new collectors when they do things like Han/Luke stormtroopers but I'm more than a little annoyed by it.  Whiney, yes.  I am not sure whether they'll continue with box sets though and if they're like the one with the snowtrooper then ouch.

I don't blame you. I'm a new collector, but I thought re releasing the Han and Luke Stormtroopers was a lame move. It's just not fair to people who bought the originals, and it pretty much kills their value: they were on the top of my want list until I found out they we're doing that new set. At the very least, they could've given them wet hair and trash compactor slime!

Anyway, I was envisioning a boxset with 5 new aliens. There are plenty to choose from. Let's see-- Dr. Evazen, Hammerhead, the devil guy, Kabe, and Talz off the top of my head. If it was a collectors club thing it'd be pricey, but I'd rather pay $200 for that than $150 for one chase. I know the chances of them actually doing it are pretty slim though.

So as I just posted something similar in the Deluxe Series 1 thread, but I've been looking back at some of the recent Hasbro waves and came across figures that were released in the Saga Collection '06 line and the 30AC line that appear to have been used to 'inspire' the recent Deluxe waves from Medicom.  For the Tatooine wave, I looked back at the Saga '06 release of the 'Battle of Tatooine' wave and sure enough, there is a floppy hat Luke, Garindan, black paldron Sandtrooper and R5-D4 figures in that release.  What they also released in that wave of Hasbro figures was a Momaw Nadon figure...  I seriously hope that Medicom ends up releasing that figure as a chase in this wave!

I've been thinking about possible chases for this wave some more. It seems like a double telescoping saber chase for Ben is almost inevitable. It would be a classic vintage nod, and an easy way for them to save on costs. I still hope they don't do it, cuz we need those chase slots for Momaw and friends. But if they killed two birds with one stone, and made chase Ben have white hair and a DT saber, and regular Ben have grey hair, it would be more tolerable I guess.

What they also released in that wave of Hasbro figures was a Momaw Nadon figure...

That's good news. Also have a hunch that we might see deleted scene Biggs, since they're doing the deleted scene Luke. I'd be happy with that. Still holding out a little bit of hope for Dr. Evazen too.  ;)

Little boring as most of these are rereleases...although I love the vintage nods to Obi-Wan and Sandpeople

The Landspeeder is the coolest part of this Series

I still haven't and probably won't track down the Hoth chases...Hammerhead would be a must buy for me if they do him :-[

Holy crap! Garindan rocks- I love the cartooney color scheme they used on him. Kind of bummed that they didn't give R5 a blown motivator or something. He looks identical to the TRU version.  :-\

Look closely at Ben's saber...

To me that looks like it could be either version, since the regular sabers had that thin tip at the end as well. Although I admit I'm no vintage expert, so I might be showing my ignorance here (as usual.) It does look like it might slide out more.  :)

I'm with you on Garindan, but I would have been ok with a darker scheme as well.

The R5 uses the two legged mold like they did to R2 for the 2 pack, other than that, ya, more of the same.

I'm hoping for good chases as well, but after seeing what happened with the dx series 2 chase prices, I don't want them to be too good.

Same.  I'm really disappointed too that they made two core vintage figures chase pieces, especially after the last AT-ST driver topped $500  ::)  Sorry, but I am now in the boat of hoping they remake that figure in a box set in a slightly different version or something to really piss of those that dropped that much coin.  I didn't pick up the Rebel chase either.

So I'm hoping that the chase figures will be something I can live without.  But I will admit the Hoth series still eats at me as those are the only chase figures I want but don't have.

Very cool! I'll probably just go for the set of six this time and skip the box of 12 route. One thing I noticed: it looks like they cheaped out on the Luke in that Landspeeder shot - his shirt detail is clearly missing.  :-\

While these are cool looking Kubricks, I have to say that I'm not really sure what to think of them.  I think the nod to the Vintage figures is pretty neat but not necessarily "my thing".  If they don't make all the vintage figures with the vinyl capes then I think the collection will always look incomplete.  I'm still going to order a box of 12 (against my better judgement) and hope I can pull a chase.  Hopefully we'll get some sort of Cantina aliens (Hammerhead preferred) but we'll probably not be so lucky.
Title: Re: Deluxe Series 3 - Tatooine

I hope the photo is a test shot for the Sandtrooper- I would like them to at least vary the "dirt" deco from the original S2 figure. That picture makes it look like it will be identical to the orange and white flavors.

Too bad they skimped on Luke's shirt deco- I wonder what his hair looks like under the hat?
Title: Re: Deluxe Series 3 - Tatooine
Post by: I Am Sith on January 24, 2011, 09:00 PM
I agree that it sucks they are using the same deco for the Sandtrooper, but I'm glad that they added the extra part of the pauldron on his left shoulder.  Makes it at least somewhat different than the carded version.  Other than that, I'm just okay with this release.  Would have liked them to have Cantina Aliens, but I can only hope that they have them as chases.  As far as the floppy hat Luke, I have to believe that the hair and hat are one piece and that you'd need to substitute an EB, Series 4, Series 5 or DLX Series 1 Luke hair piece if you wanted to have this one without the hat.  Depending on the price, I'll probably still get a box of 12 with the hope of pulling a chase.  However, if these end up topping $200 for a box this year, I'll be perfectly fine with picking up a set of 6 and the Landspeeder on the secondary market...

It just looks like his poncho is a hard plastic item, so I was thinking either the hat, hat & hair, or head need to come off to get the poncho off.

Overall, my POTF2 landspeeder had been working fine, the GH Jabba looked good enough on the vintage throne, and the AT-ST doesn't serve much of a purpose. I guess the DX series just haven't done much to wow me. I miss the old days of series 5,  6 and 7- great prices, exciting line-ups, and fun chases (Yakface is still my favorite). Maybe they are hitting the Hasbro wall, needing to get main characters in every series, but I don't get the brick buzz I used to.

I'm a bit bummed at the lack of a chest tampo underneath Luke's poncho.  Looks kind of silly sitting in the Speeder with a white chest block.  And you can't use the Early Bird version, if memory serves, because he's wearing the vinyl-type skirt and can't be taken apart.

According to BBTS:

This box of 12 will include the following figures, along with the parts to make a (possibly two) Landspeeder:

2x Luke Skywalker
2x Tusken Raider
2x Obi-Wan Kenobi
2x Garindan
2x R5-D4
2x Sandtrooper

Great news in my opinion. If you buy a box of 12 and don't get a chase, you'll have an extra set of six and probably an extra landspeeder to sell off.
Title: Re: Deluxe Series 3 - Tatooine
Post by: Jayson on March 3, 2011, 01:50 PM
Even though that's what it says, previous DLX boxes haven't had an equal number (2x) of each figure. (Ex: you couldn't build 2 Jabba's or 2 AT-STs) So, unless Medicom changed their packout procedures I wouldn't expect anything different than before with this release.

Jabba's Palace Asst:
3x C-3PO & Salacious Crumb
3x R2-D2 (Jabba's Barge)
2x Luke (Jedi Knight)
2x Chewbacca (Boushh's Prisoner)
1x Amanaman
1x Bib Fortuna

Hoth Asst:
x3 Snowtrooper Commander
x3 Chewbacca Mechanic
x2 Luke (Hoth)
x2 Han (Hoth)
x1 Leia (Hoth)
x1 R-3PO

I figured they knew something we didn't, as they've carried the last 2 DX sets and must know how the ratios usually break down. But yeah, I guess this info could be wrong. I'd be pissed if I ordered a case based on this info and the ratios were different.

I for one will be shocked if that case ratio turns out to be accurate.  I'm expecting the Tusken and Sandtrooper in a 3:12 ratio, Ben and Luke in 2:12 and the other two as singles.  But, if it does end up being accurate, it would be nice to pull a box that has a chase and not have to worry about still getting a set of six because the chase was in a 1:12 box.  That always bugged me about when there are 1:12 figures and Medicom decide to put a chase in that box.

I also found it interesting that the pre-order price is $5 less than what they charged for DLX1.  I half expected to see $210 as the pre-order price when I clicked on the link ::).

2x Luke Skywalker

2x Obi-Wan Kenobi
2x Garindan
2x R5-D4
2x Sandtrooper

Known Medicom they could change it

I am 2 for 2 with NCS:

Fett Series - Unpainted Rocket Fett

Deluxe S2 - Hoth Trooper

Odds are as good with them as anyone I guess.  Just don't buy a box off of Ebay if you want a shot at a chase.

Just don't buy a box off of Ebay if you want a shot at a chase.

Why is that?

A Master Case comes with 4 "blind" boxes, each box has 12 figures.  With the Deluxe series, only one of the 4 boxes contains a chase.  If someone finds the chase box beofre opening the others, they can put the remaining unopened boxes up for sale knowing fully well that there is no chance of a chase inside.  I definitely trust NCS and sounds like BBTS is okay, but I would not trust a vendor or individual selling these items on Ebay.  Some may be honest, but not worth the chance when you're forking over that much dough.

Well, I held off as long as I could.  With NCS out of stock, I put in an order for a box at BBTS as well.  $200+ including shipping, though I feel pretty good about my ability to sell off half the the boxes with them going 2x this time around.  Sets of 6 + the the build are going for about $100 on Ebay, so I figured its worth the chance at a chase.

I know many folks have already pre-ordered from BBTS or NCS, but both are stateside retailers.  I find it curious that HLJ.com hasn't posted these yet so I'm wondering if they're just taking their time or if there's something more to it.  Historically HLJ.com has been pretty good about getting Kubs up for pre-order and still nothing yet.

Current Earthquake Effects at HLJ (http://www.hlj.com/specials/sendaiearthquake) Scheduled for a June 11th release from what I can see I see it being delayed for a bit, all depends on Medicom & they could have been affected too... whole dang island is in shambles...  :(

I predict the end of Jun/Jul for the release of SWDX3. Don't forget Medicom during these months host's a toy show of upcoming kubes/bearbrick at the Parco store. Who knows if they will do this, this year

Also everything is made in China so other than a bit of admin I doubt the earthquake has interrupted Medicom much. So I suspect that their normal release schedule which can be a month either side of the announced date will remain the same.

but i can see a floppy hat Biggs (I'd rather have him in x wing getup)
Garindan repaint (more movie like)
and a telescoping saber Luke... money saved i guess, but i want to know already!

Since I hadn't seen anything on HLJ.com I decided to email them and ask about it just to see what kind of response I would get.  Here's the response from one of their staffers:

Concerning #3, we do not have any official information from our suppliers about that item, but once we do it will be up on the website. I'm sorry, but I cannot give you any indication of when that might be. Please keep checking!

I'm guessing it's because they'll be released during the Medicom Toy Exhibition at the end of July so no chase news till August. Other than that we know everything right?

I broke down and bought the Harry Potter figures the other day just to tide me over for a while.

Tell me about it I bought 2 Bearbricks the other day and felt dirty. In my defence they were the Medicom Toy 15th Anniversary Bearbrick (i have the 10th anniversary Kubrick) and the Tetris Bearbrick. So not any crappy character ones.

Chases revealed! I dread to think what the cost of these are going to be. Having said that I wonder how many we'll see of these? Will Hammerhead be the new AT-ST Driver? (Assuming Uncle Owen is considered more common like the Hoth Rebel Trooper)

The Uncle Owen chase comes in the Obi-wan Kenobi Box and the Hammerhead chase comes in the Sandtrooper box. Both are 1:96

It looks like the 2:12 ratio for all figures is true (if you discount the chases taking up 1 space)

Sweet.  These are pretty nice chases - I'd be happy to score either one of them assuming BBTS can actually score me a box.  Hammerhead looks pretty nice, but I can live without him if he's going to be $3-400.

That could just be the camera that was used as all the colors in the second picture look a little dull.  I like the brighter colors int he first one, but really the second looks more true to the movie.  You don't really want an Imperial spy with a bright blue cloak.   ;)

Damn it.  I like both those chases.  I can likely live without Owen if need be.  Hell, with the AT-ST driver being what it is, I can live without that too.

I was digging that blue and green Garindan, but this new version is pretty nice too. I like the contrast of the cape with the muted green body. Maybe they added some chest deco to Luke.

There's another shot of the entire set of figures against the display and they have Luke in the landspeeder without his cloak on.  They did add shirt detail under the cloak.

Thanks for the tip Jeff!  I went ahead and ordered 2 boxes with the money I saved not buying SDCC Hasbro Exclusives!   >:D  I wasn't sure about SAL shipping, so paid a little extra for Fed Ex.  I'll feel better about getting it sooner and having the tracking available.  Cancelled my order with BigBad, which was $194, so this definitely saved me some dough.

The sets appearing on ebay are going for the same amount DX2 went for so I get the feeling the chases are going to follow the same pattern. Few and far between and very expensive.

Anyone else think that some of those DX3 complete set sales looked a little bogey? I find it hard to believe that the same seller had 4/5 complete sets all of which sold in such a short space of time for such high amounts...

I'm also surprised that we haven't seen a Hammerhead up on eBay yet...I really hope these chases are more avaibable than the DX2 chases...the last thing this line needs is another AT-ST driver.

Not at all, dealers on eBay buy Master Cases all the time... that's how they make there coin completing sets... put 1 up for $500. & it's bin'd then another set $100. more & bin'd & up the price again... it's the norm... as for Hammerhead, think he is the AT-ST driver all over again... Japan release vs Honk Kong release... good luck on the chases gang... my complete set is on the way...  ;D

Can anyone tell me the shipping cost on their HLJ order?  The site says about $25 for fed ex estimated.  I ordered 2 boxes and the shipping is like $52, which is lame because the sit says shipping will likely be 20-40% lower with multiple items.

Also, does HLJ take credit cards?  They are requesting paypal payment.

My credit card was tagged with an authorization last night and they shipped my box so it must have gone through...

I heard back tonight.  They reduced my shipping to 3,865 yen, which saves me about a buck.  Oh well.  They also said I could pay by CC if I went to the site and created a profile.  I just sent off paypal instead to get it complete and on the way.  Too bad I misjudged the shipping...I have sold off my extras but if I don't get a chase I just paid $140 for a set of 6 figs.  Ugh.

Hammerhead is even worse than the AT-ST driver. At least that dude had the decency to show up on ebay outside of complete sets! (although he didn't have the decency to be sensibly priced). So far we've had two ebay sellers sell three complete sets each. Now nothing  :(

This is the big downside to the DX series I think.

They've been out long enough for any ebay business sellers.

Do we have any confirmation that Hammerhead and the AT-ST driver are Japanese exclusives? (A bit like the Cantina band member) If so I guess the Hong Kong sellers with full sets imported Japanese master cases.
Title: Re: Deluxe Series 3 - Tatooine
Post by: Morgbug on August 3, 2011, 02:38 PM
While I agree that some ebay sellers obviously have them already I think Justin's point is correct - these things are "just out" so it's way too early to think any information we have is anything other than speculation based on past history.  HLJ.com, a Japanese based online retailer only got their shipment within the last several days.  I assume other retailers could have had them a little sooner but it's only been about a week at most since we've seen "in hand" auctions.

My suspicion is that the ebay sellers are bulk purchasers that may be able to go directly through Medicom and probably pick up their shipment rather than waiting for delivery.  Six complete sets is hardly enough to warrant a panic about anything yet.  Most of the cases/boxes are still in transit I would think.

Cracked open my box...  no chases for me.    :'(

Oh well, still a nice series.

Originally I was a little bummed about all the resculpts they announced for this series, but they are so different from previous versions and the Kenner homages are great.  I love the execution on Ben's slide out saber and I love the landspeeder.  I will try to break out the camera in a bit and take some pics...

The Landspeeder is much bigger than I was expecting and is really well done - the way it snaps together is just awesome engineering.  Much better then the AT-ST I think as it's much closer to scale of the Kubs than the chicken walker was.

After opening them up and playing a bit, Obi-Wan and the Tusken are my favorites I think.  Garindan is nice, but a little plain.  Same with R5-D4 (I was happy with the 3-leg version they already did).  Luke is fine, but I'm not much of a Luke guy anyway and his hat/hair is sort of odd and only really good for floppy hat Luke.  Sandtrooper has the gun from the White Pauldron version with the armor of the Orange Pauldron version - a nice mix I guess.

Like I said though, Obi-Wan and Tusken are my favorites here.  I Love the execution on the saber-arm for Obi-Wan and the vinyl capes on both are great.  These will display great alongside the Kenner stuff for those who do the Hasbro-Kenner-Kubrick trio displays now.  Here's a few quick pics of my favorites...

Yeah, I can't complain with my history of chases.  I'm a little bummed about not getting either chase this time, but still really happy with the other figures.  Hoping to build the landspeeder today - from all the pics I've seen it looks fantastic!

Here's hoping Hammerhead doesn't command the AT-ST prices, though with none on Ebay yet, I'm starting to fear the worst...

I know I know, but if you look on Ebay, there hasn't been an auction with Hammerhead since July.  What a difference 3-4 days makes...   ;)

I haven't been able to find any auctions for him alone- the sets of all 8 figures were going for $500-$650 I believe.

The 2 per box ratio has some benifits, but some drawbacks as well. Nice that you can build two landspeeders if you buy a box, but who needs two landspeeders? Nice that there isn't 1 or 2 that are singles in a box of 12, but not having extras of the sandtroopers or raiders is a bit of a let down.

I would still rather have the 2 per case though.  You could buy an extra Tusken or Sandy off Ebay for $15 or less if you really wanted more.  The days of having the chase packed in the 1:12 box (like your experience with Amanaman) were awful.  With S2, you got more Snowtroopers, but guys like Steve and Jay have had a rough time trying to track down Leia or even her AT-ST part.  At least the 2 full sets make it easier to sell off your extras - I would not have ordered two boxes this time around of the ratios were mixed.

I finally opened all 6 of these last night and put together the land speeder.  Overall, I really like this set. I’d give it an 8 out of 10 compared to other SW Kube releases.

The Tusken Raider is easily the best of the bunch with three weapons and that awesome vinyl cape.  I’d rank Ben right up there – fantastic homage to the vintage Kenner figure with that cape and extendable lightsaber.  Gary is nicely done and the imperial drab colors look good on him.  Only complaint here is that he doesn’t have a communicator, which is a pretty necessary accessory for the spy who calls the imperials.

I’m not a big fan of Luke Farmboy, but I really like the accessories and removable poncho.  He looks great driving the landspeeder as well, so that makes up for a somewhat boring figure.  I wasn’t looking forward to another Sandtrooper either, but the paint aps are pretty cool and hard to go wrong with a troop builder.  The little droid that comes with him is a nice addition as well.  R5 is really the only loser from this bunch.  He’s well done, but really didn’t need a second version of him.  I’m probably somewhat biased against astromechs right now after just buying the carded R2 as well.  I did notice that the legs easily pop in and out, which is a nice tough.  I don’t recall the previous one being able to do that.

As for the Land speeder, this makes the set worth every penny.  Fantastic design and loads of detail.  I’ve seen the pictures, but they don’t do justice to the size of the speeder.  Perfect in almost every way…I would have loved a flip open hood to store my spare gaffi sticks in, but not going to complain given that I love everything else about it. It’s going to be a long wait for Series 4…

Was just looking back through the pages of this thread and found this interesting.  Nice find Sith...

Okay, time to start up the tally of results:

No chases:
Jeff (HLJ) 1 Box
Justin (HLJ) 2 Boxes
Adrian (HLJ) 1 Box

Owen Lars Chase:
Outkast34 (HLJ) 1 Box

Unknown:
Morgbug?
I am Sith (NCS)?
Brent S (NCS)?
Tiny?

We're about average so far with one chase out of 5 boxes...

Sorry to hear that Brent.  Seems like chases are more scarce this time around.  I contacted HLJ about a master case yesterday just to find out the cost.  They got back to me earlier and let me know that they actually only had one box of 12 left in stock.  If anyone has been waiting to order, you might want to get going.

Everyone's been talking about how they haven't seen any Hammerhead's on ebay, but I didn't realize until tonight that I also haven't seen any auctions for the Tatooine background piece.  BBTS has it up for pre-order for $70, which is a 75% markup from what they charged for the DX1 or DX2 backgrounds ($40).  Not that these were worth the $40 they were charging before, but there's no way in hell they are worth the $70 they are charging now!

I have seen a few auctions for them.  I am almost positive I saw one go for about $50 or $60 by itself, along with a few others that were sold with basic sets of 6 for about $120.  That $70 price from BBTS is a big upcharge.  I'm curious what companies like NCS or HLJ do with their inserts, as I imagine the majority of their sales were for individual boxes.

Funny you should ask because I sent NCS a question about that a few weeks ago.  They responded that they give them to buyers who ordered two boxes or more.

I'll have to keep my eyes open for a bay listing that doesn't break the bank.

That's what they had told me with DX1 and 2 as well, but I don't remember seeing anyone saying they received one. For 1 and 2 our group was still getting mastercases, so someone ended up with a chase, and a second person got the background. that left 2 out of luck, which I think killed our big group purchases  :-\

I’m really surprised by the lack of chases this time around. Even with DX2 it took a while before the AT-ST driver reached the crazy prices that he commands now. The Rebel Trooper was pretty easy to come by too as far as I can recall. With DX3 it feels like there is much less product out there…Can this be put down to lower production numbers? Or is it the case that retailers are still awaiting stock…I really hope it’s the latter as this trend is killing the hobby for me. I love these figures but the hunt for the chases is becoming an ordeal…

I'm a little shocked too.  Maybe it is still early - I know half the guys here haven't received anything yet, but seems odd that we've only seen two Owens on Ebay and maybe a couple of full 9-figure sets.  Could be that production is down or maybe popularity is up, so less people are selling their chases?  What worries me is that BBTS, NCS, and HLJ are now all out of stock, so it sure doesn't seem like the number of chases available is going to pick up.  Hopefully the next few weeks brings out a few more opportunities.  I'm hoping that some of these rarer figures make another appearance somehow on cards or multi-packs or else I'm never going to get them.

I'm with you on the chase frustration - its one thing when things are hard to get or expensive.  Its something totally different when you just can't even find something rare at any price.   >:(

I've pretty much given up on Chases with the DX waves.  I got lucky and got a Fett in my box of 12 for DX1 but didn't get any for DX2.  I'm not even looking for them... just way to expensive to justify.  I paid $150 for Saesee Tiin back in the day and swore I'd never do that again.  So I will probably never have most of the chases.

I never really focused on the 1/96 chases because of the ridiculous price.  Most collectors have one form of OCD or another, and trust me--I know there's a compulsion to get everything you can, particularly more popular characters (Tarkin as a 1/96 chase is still one of the most mind-boggling things I've seen in my time as a collector).  BUT. . .$100+ for a Kubrick is very difficult for me to swallow.  I collect Hot Toys figures, so I'm not averse to paying a lot of money for something, but for a 3 inch plastic figure it's just tough, no matter how rare or cool it is.

Compound that with Medicom's troubling trend of re-releasing rare chases as cheap, easy to find 2-packs, and you've got a formula for tears down the road  :-\

Thanks Dan, this is the 2nd time I have bin'd a complete set off the bay & I have no regrets... with what the AT-ST Commander is commanding, it worked out great for me... a hell of a lot cheaper than get the chases separately & I think the Hammerhead will fall in with him which is unfortunate... and on that note they have arrived...  Behold!  ;D

I'd like to see a cantina wave w/ the vintage versions of Greedo and Walrus Man, and do a Hammerhead re-release, looking more like the Saga 06 figure..  Heck, considering they are re-releasing everyone in vintage style, this might not be too far-fetched.

Thanks guys. I was shocked getting that chase, especially given the apparent extra rarity for Momaw. I opened my Obi Wan boxes first and bummed not finding Owen. I didn't even remember which box Momaw was supposed to be in. I really wasn't expecting it but sure was happy to pull him.

Hopefully for all of you, this chase gets easier to find as more of these start to hit the market!

Nice purchase dude.  I found that on my way to a meeting and stared at it for the longest time.  I thought it said $330 + $20 shipping and was waffling.  Then I decided to do it and noticed it was $350 plus $20 shipping, which made me waffle a little more.  I refreshed a few times and then it was sold.  $370 is not a bad price given what the AT-ST was selling for, but I had a hard time justifying that cost for one little guy, even if it is Hammerhead.  I'm sure I will regret not buyiner...

Oh well, congrats!

Well this was lost in translation for a moment. waffle or waffling in the UK means babbling or talking nonsense. Wavering on the other hand means to be indecisive about something.

I sat on my hands when the full sets went up and have been kicking myself since....when I saw it go up I felt it best to jump on now rather than regret it down the line. I really hope they sort out the ratios though or else this line is going to break me. The DX1 chases were a breeze, DX2 got silly with the AT-ST driver, but at least he was available for a bit before the prices skyrocketed, with DX3...its been nuts since day one. I am delighted to have gotten the figure though (at least now I can stop continually checking eBay!). Now all I need to find is Uncle Owen...
Title: Re: Deluxe Series 3 - Tatooine

I saw that this morning, and it was briefly at $330. Guess that's how quick Hammerhead's price is skyrocketing.  :) Congrats on snagging it.

I'm one of the ones who pounced on a full set from the bay. I thought I'd be kicking myself, but so far I'm definitely glad I took that gamble, and really pleased with the set.  Though I am kicking myself about not going for some of the first auctions I saw on yahoo when DX3 first dropped.  Kubricks are all about kicking yourself or worrying about eventually kicking yourself...

Well this was lost in translation for a moment. waffle or waffling in the UK means babbling or talking nonsense. Wavering on the other hand means to be indecisive about something.

In that case, I was both waffling and wavering!  I'm glad to hear someone else saw it at $330 - I thought I was losing my vision.  I'm regretting not hitting buy it now right away at $330...I think.  I've never paid more than $160 for a figure, so more than double that was definitely reason to pause.  I think I would have bought the set of 9 for $600 if I had seen it, so let's do the math...

- $80 can get you a basic set
 - Owen is going for about $180
 - A packaged deal means Hammerhead is worth around $360....pretty close

I'm not including shipping costs in there, but after I had thought it about it, I figured $350 shipped was worth it.  Then when I saw it was $370 total I was thrown for a loop, thinking maybe there were multiple postings.  Stinks to have been in a meeting - I didn't really have time to think things through clearly before I saw that it had sold.

I guess I'm happy that I didn't blow $370 today, and that still feels like a lot of money, but if another one popped up at that price, I think I might go for it.  Curious how many other people are willing to snag one for that price...  :-\

You can put me in the camp of not willing to pay anywhere near that amount yet.  The most I've paid for an individual figure is $150, including most recently the L-Slot Fett and Owen Lars chase figures.  I guess this is the reason I haven't bought the Rebel Trooper, AT-ST driver or Hammerhead figures yet.  The same could be said for why I don't have a carded Jorg.  When ningyoushi had the rebel trooper available for $160, I almost pulled the trigger on numerous occasions.  But I kept coming back to the fact that I would be starting down a slippery slope of justifying almost any amount as 'okay' to spend for these.

I got into collecting these things because it was fun and because there was the draw of being a bit hard to come by since they were Japan only toys.  Now that it's becoming almost impossible to come by some of these chase figures unless you're willing to break the bank to get them, I'm starting to come around to the idea that I just might not get the complete SW collection after all.  And you know, I'm okay with that...

Title: Re: Deluxe Series 3 - Tatooine

Well, I am a total crackbrick addict.  I found a Hammerhead with a BIN on a Japanese Auction for $281 tonight, so I bought it.  It was sitting with no bids for only $222 (still a lot), but I really want that Hammerhead and am tired of looking for him every 15min on Ebay.  I was going to buy the SDCC Death Star Exclusive for $130, so I'm going to justify my purchase by not getting that and paying my self-imposed "limit" of $150 (it makes sense if you read it a few times).

I'm still not convinced I did the right thing, but using the $600 9pc set as a benchmark, I paid $280 for Hammerhead and $140 for my basic set of 6 + Landspeeder after selling the extras, so I've still got $160-180 to find Owen, though I'm going to have to hold off on that one for a while.  Now I'm off to go find a second job...

I got a breakdown of the full cost today.  After fees and 2x shipping, it came to $325 (shipping was helped a little because I have a few other items coming from Japan as well).  Not shabby.

These things have held their value pretty well, so if push came to shove, it is nice to know that you could probably get your money back on most items.  Obviously rereleases like Han/Luke Trooper are a bummer.  Brent - you can use that logic with your wife to let her know it will be worth a lot for years to come, so you're diversifying your investment portfolio.   ;)

Thanks Mike!  Did you actually see it sell or just see a new listing for it?  I've been watching them as well, but not sure that they actually got anything in stock.  I emailed them a few times and the purchasing guy was a little clueless about chases for Dx3.  He said he'd keep an eye out, but that they hadn't received any chases yet.  I think the Dx2 and Dx3 chases were listed, but not sure what they actually sold versus place holders.  At this point I would think they'd up the price if they actually got something in stock.  If they did get one and sold it for that, it was a steal!

I just saw it listed as out of stock, but they had/have the regular set for sale as well as a background display (for an excessive $110.) So I figured  they must've opened up a master case or something, had Owen for a short time and then somebody snapped it up. But yeah maybe it's a place holder cuz that price does seem low compared to their usual gouging.

Not that I want to defend Brian's Toys in any way, but you may remember when the Series 4 Veers was Out of Stock for years and then magically was In Stock one day.  They never ended up increasing the price from the original and I was able to steal it for $80 at the time.  So I don't think it's out of the question that if they did end up getting another Owen in stock that they would keep the price at $110.

I have a quick question for you guys .. when you say you got it off a japanese auction.. what are they and where do you find them? sorry for the newbie question.

Here you go:

i dont think any of them do international shipping... just get a Celga account.. you can win the auctions that way.

http://www.celga.com/index.php?page=goldfaq
that explains why some of you guys pay so much for your figs... good luck and happy bidding

Open an account and you can bid on Yahoo Japan auctions.  Jman opened an account on another site so I'll let him respond with that info...
Title: Re: Deluxe Series 3 - Tatooine
Post by: JediJman on August 16, 2011, 10:52 PM
I checked out Celga, but had a tough time deciphering all the Japanese.  Their instructions are much clearer, but I signed up for a site called One Japan http://onejp-yahoo.com

Both sites and possibly others act as an agent for you to bid on auctions in Japan.  You can search through these auctions, very similar to Ebay.

Here's how it works with ONEJP:
- Register with the site
- Search the auctions to find items you're interested in (I typically search for "Star Wars Kubrick")
- If you find something you want to bid on, you first have to send money via paypal.  Plan on sending $50-75 extra, there is supposedly no charge to refund the money back to you later
- Once you have enough in your account, you can bid on an auction.  What you're really doing is asking ONEJP to make the bid for you.  When they see your bid request, they will make the bid on the auction as your representative.

Costs:
- The auction price is clearly laid out.  Some are even buy-it-now.  My Hammerhead was listed as $222 starting price or $281 BIN.  Ignore the fees listed off to the right.  Here's what you will really pay:
   - Auction Price
   - Shipping in Japan (The seller ships the item to your agent).  This is listed at like $27, but ends up being more like $5-7
   - Bank Transfer Fee of $7 (unavoidable no matter how you pay)
   - Comission Fee for your agent, ONEJP.  This is how they make their money.  You pay either 10% of the auction price or a minimum of $21
   - ONEJP then ships the item to you and charges about $20-25

So, at minimum, plan on about $55 ($7 + $7 + $21 + $20) added to the price of your auction.  It really isn't worth it for smaller cost items, though they will hold multiple winnings to save you money on the final US shipping.  I won three diffferent auctions, so deferring the $21 shipping across three items cuts the price down to $7 each.  Here was the cost breakdown for my Hammerhead:

$280 Auction + $5 Japan Shipping + $7 Bank Fee + $28 Commission + $7 US Shipping = $327 (I pumped $375 into my ONEJP account via paypal to make sure I had enough money)

Keep in mind that I have yet to receive any items or try out the bank refund.  My Hammerhead should be there in a few days and then I'll have my lot sent out.  I think I'll take a break for a while unless I see an AT-ST Driver or something.
Title: Re: Deluxe Series 3 - Tatooine
Post by: JediJman on August 16, 2011, 11:08 PM
Just a follow-up to this- I think Celga only requires you to have 50% of your bid price in the account to make a bid.  For example, if you want to bid up to $200 on something, you only need to put $100 in your celga account,  Sith - correct me if that's not right.
Title: Re: Deluxe Series 3 - Tatooine

Spot on.  And if you end up not winning an auction, you request a refund and they usually process it in about a day or two after the request goes in.  I've made six bids with them and gotten my refunds back very quickly for the five I didn't win.  I have yet to receive my invoice for my item, so I don't have as much detail about the fees and how they breakdown.  I'll let you know once I do though.

Just received my regular set- gotta say im so impressed with the Landspeeder. Really is beautiful, and the engineering to put it together is very clever. Love the little touch of the little clear 'bubbles' on the bottom to make it float, and the scale is just about perfect- was always a little unimpressed with the AT-ST scale wise, just seemed to small.
Also not sure if its been mentioned yet, but love the fact that Luke's lightsabre blade is removeable, and that you can hang the hilt on his belt.
Bit of a shame Hammerhead is going to be so unobtainable, one of my favourite characters- but thats medicom for you I suppose. Outside of the impossible to get chases though really digging this wave  :D

I got my invoice tonight.  The figure I purchased was $68.  The in-country shipping, shipping to US, and Celga fees came out to $25.  So my final price for a Blue Stars Snowtrooper ended up at $93 shipped.   Much better than I could have gotten off ebay for sure!

Wow, that is awesome!  I can't believe the fees/shipping was so low.  What is their commission?  Onejp charges $21 minimum and $7 bank fee, so you're out $28 before you even pay any shipping costs.   ::)  Nice score!

Nice Hat! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/smokebelch/6057271342/) by smokebelch (http://www.flickr.com/people/smokebelch/), on Flickr

Like the fact that he's 'breakable' as well, these always feel slightly better quality than the 'unbreakable' figs. Hoth Luke was the same. Have to say I've always felt a bit dissapointed with some of the Star Wars Kubs for this reason- understand that they have to for licensing reasons- but some of mine have such wobbly legs they can hardly stand up! The paint and design is always great just feel the 'construction' can let em down a bit- esp if you end up paying a premium for a figure.
Does seem to be more figures in the recent waves that are 'breakable' and looking at the pics of Hammerhead he seems to be too  :) (not that i'll ever be able to afford him though!)

Nice! You should put together some kind of star wars kubrick coffee table book or something.

Luke is one of my faves from this wave as well. I need to pick up a spare so I can have one in the landspeeder, one wearing the poncho and use the extra poncho for b&w boba fett. I didn't realize you can hang the saber on his belt-- that's sweet.  :)

I need to do the same for Obi-Wan. I have him sat in the landspeeder because it's the most obvious place to put him. However I also feel it's a waste of the vinyl and lightsaber features so an extra would be nice.

True. I've kept Obi Wan out of the speeder after realizing that his cape would get dinged up if i tried to squeeze him in, and I don't want to take his cape off cuz of the waste of vinyl/saber issue you mentioned. Might be a convenient excuse to pick up the grey haired version.  >:D

You're going to need a better excuse with the prices that thing is commanding.  I  want the graybeard, but have yet to see one for anywhere close to $100.   :P

Yeah before I got the figure I hadn't seen that you could, but noticed the little hanger on his belt- and the loop on his sabre and figured must be for a reason. Getting the blade out was a bit tricky at first as didn't want to break it, but removes ok. Really nice touch I thought  ;D

Hey Smokebelch, your photos are fantastic, what do you use to light the figures? I love photography but can't get anywhere near your quality of lighting!

ps. is your tag anything to do with an Underworld track?

Thanks man, got a pretty simple set up for my shots. I use my Ipod touch with a torch app to light em, and take them on a slow exposure. Takes a bit of playing round to get a good effect, but works really well. So long as you can change the exposure time on your camera will work with any led light source ie mobile phone etc.

And close on the tag- actually from a Sabres Of Paradise track, originally from same era as Underworld.

Haha back on topic, really want to get some beach 'tatooine' shots of the Landspeeder in action  ;)

I don't think I'd even pay $100. Prices on it seem to be cooling a bit on Yahoo so if it ever falls to around $50-60 I'll get it. Would've been cool if they had done a cantina band member type thing and packed half the obi boxes with white hair and the other half grey.

Holy Shite .. 350 it would of been mine but I don't think I could ever spend almost 500 for a kubrick. plus it would be a trip to disney world or hammerhead lol.... Mickey wins all the time.

this is really insane, why does he have to be the chase. I have always wanted him as a figure but not at that price .

Thanks for posting the link dude.

Thanks to Justin I now have my hands on these, and I am turning in to a complete fan of the vintagy vibe Medicom is putting together. My series 2 tuskens can hang out with the Hasbro Bantha, and the new one can go in a more vintage display setting. I'm looking forward to series 4 even more now, so that Vader and Leia can get their vinyl goodness alongside Obi Wan and the raider. I hope they do a Jawa up that fits in to the scheme.  :)

I'm bummed the DX series are so expensive for boxes, and I have virtually no desire to get into the chase chase. I would gladly give up the vehicles to get back to a more reasonable ($100-125) chase price.  :-\

I agree with Dan; I'd love to see a vintage style Jawa. They should do a pick-up wave of characters they left out of the DX waves, ie that Wampa from the DX2 background card and the Gonk droid from this one (it's sweet, his legs are just regular human kubrick legs, haha.)

Anyway, that leaves me with a spare Hammerhead for sale.  If anyone wants him, I'm offering him for $375.  I'll cover shipping as well.  Send me a PM if you're interested...

I'm a little surprised at the lack of Owens as well.   :-\  I think there have been a similar number of both on Ebay, but the Hammerheads have definitely been more plentiful on Yahoo Japan.  I wonder if some people overseas don't realize he is a chase?  I've seen at least one auction where he was referred to as Ben.  Its pretty obvious that Hammerhead is not a Sandtrooper, but I could see non-SW types overseas not realizing they have a chase when they find an Owen.

I received a dx3 sandtrooper in the mail today, and it was completely sealed. I was hoping I had won the brick lottery, but no dice- probably came from a box that had owen, so the person knew the sandtrooper was a sandtrooper. Still, if it had been me, I would have double checked just in case...

My DX3 Owen arrived today in perfect condition!!! Delighted to have this wave completed. Compared to Hammerhead he's a pretty boring figure though...Hopefully we will see the end of DX waves after DX4 and get back to 9 figure waves with $100-$125 chases!!!

What country are you in?  I could buy it on Ebay and send to you if you're honestly interested in it...

No problemo.

Owen arrived in the mail today - WOOHOO!  I wasn't all that excited about him at first, but I like him more after getting a close up look.   The tunic is pretty well detailed and even has a little hoodie jutting out in the back.  I like the face detail on him as well.  He's a distant second to Hammerhead in this wave, but still a nice addition to the wave.

Thanks to Justin's overzealous brick addiction, I am the happy owner of hammerhead.  ;D

Thanks Justin!

Against my better judgement (maybe it was the giddiness of the Vikes beating Bears) I just bought Series 3 and 4,   I really only want Owen and Hammerhead for the chases but don't see any on eBay.  Seems like series 3 is a little more rare than 4 in general.  I hate that Hammerhead was a chase

Do you mean you bought ALL of S3 and S4?  How much did you drop on those?

No, just the regular releases.  The DX4 chases are on there now but none of the DX3 ones

Well, the knock-off Lograys for $33 look pretty nice.  Wouldn't surprise me to start finding knock-off AT-ST Drivers and Hammerheads someday.  There's always the possibility of rereleases as well...
