Several days ago I saw an image from SDCC of a cardback with a Scout Trooper being one of the figures. The card was angled, the resolution wasn't sharp, and I wasn't fully awake. I could have sworn it read Dick Scout Trooper. I immediately thought we were getting a Jason Sudeikis figure from the Mandalorian.
So, yah, no.
But how great would it be if Hasbro immortalized him as that jackass?

Well, you might get your wish. If Hasbro is going to go through the effort of tooling up a brand new Speeder Bike/Scout Trooper for the 40th ROTJ stuff, I think it's a safe bet that we'll see a quick Mandalorian repaint of that Bike/Scout with maybe a lil bagged Grogu accessory tossed in?
Double-dipping on sculpts seems to be Hasbro's #1 rule these days.

They haven't made a speeder bike in years. That was one of their original double-dippers where they would release everyone that was ever near a speeder bike on a speeder bike - Scout Trooper, Leia, Luke, Ewok.

Honestly, if they use the speeder bike that came with the Legacy AT-AT they wouldn't have to change anything for the Mandalorian and only have to make it brown for any ROTJ release (40th anniversary is just around the corner.)

Based on the interviews from SDCC it sounds like Hasbro might be making the Speeder Bike from the ground up. Because they were talking about making it in proportion to the figures.
And yes, the double or even triple dip is a given. It's just the way of things now. And I think that with time we'll get version(s) from The Mandalorian with Scout Troopers and maybe even IG-11, as well as with Luke and Leia from Endor. Hasbro is nothing if not predictable these days.
-
Don’t forget Hoth speeder bikes… speeder bikes with Clones on them… speeder bikes riding on speeder bikes…
-
Of course! Can't forget those.
-
So... what do you think they are going to charge us for the all-new ROTJ 40th Anniversary Speeder Bike with Scout Trooper = $40? $50? $60?
And then, like you all said, be prepared to shell out for -
- repack with VC191 Endor Leia
- repack with VC198 Endor Luke
- repack with VC190 Paploo
- The Mandalorian Repaint with Scout Trooper
- The Mandalorian Repaint with IG-88/Grogu
- repaint with VC045 AOTC Clone Trooper
- repaint with new TVC ROTS Clone Trooper
- ESB/Hoth repaint
Everyone excited to shell out $600 on countless Speederbike repacks/repaints/rehashes?
-
Definitely not excited for the cost of it... but I'm happy to get a new speeder bike, and supposedly a new Scout Trooper as well. Knowing the endless repacks will be a part of the plan, I'm ok with it.
-

Agreed. I'd be happy getting one that isn't the same basic version as the one made in the 80's. And a new, more modern Scout would be welcome too. That other stuff can be left to the completionists.
-
I'm ok with the multi-dipping. Makes sense. In fact, I want a lot of these hypothetical sets. I just hope Hasbro has ended the practice of packing partially-articulated figures with their vehicles to lower the cost. I think $40 is a fair price point.
-
The Legacy Collection speederbike was an all-new mold and it's excellent. The only problem is that it was a TRU exclusive. Allegedly they lost the mold for it though, so that's probably why they're doing the full resculpt (again).

I thought there was a new version around the same time as the 6" version but I didn't see any results when I (casually) searched for it. I sort of remember wondering why they didn't use the same flight stand as the 6" model.
-
The 2012 speeder bike in the Discover The Force line (https://www.banthaskull.com/photo_galleries/gallery/ph_speeder_bike) was pretty good, and you got some value in that set. It included the speeder bike that was accurate in deco to ROTJ, a flight stand, a heavy blaster on a tripod and the Scout Trooper. All for $24.99!
I think some parts of that vehicle might have been re-purposed for the TFA First Order Speeder Bike (but that was junk, TBH).
The Legacy Collection speeder bike (http://www.yakfaceforums.com/TGuide2004/html/TLC/deluxe/speederbike_scout.html) was cool for the offscreen paint apps. But I think it was pretty similar to the POTF2 mold that had been in circulation since the 90's.
I'm curious about the presentation, since Hasbro has been paying so much attention to it with The Vintage Collection. I think they're probably going to replicate this in a modern rendition.
Could there be a separate Chief Chirpa figure in our future to replicate that artwork? It would be nice.
-
Ah thanks Nick, I meant the Discover the Force speeder bike. That thing is excellent, and I have like four of them.

It's all good! Keeping track of everything Hasbro has made can be a monumental pain in the ass. I agree though - that Discover the Force Speeder Bike was excellent, and I know I've got a few as well.

There seems to be a theory circulating in the community regarding Legacy Collection sculpts and tooling. And it amounts to something like a lot of the Legacy Collection era tooling was lost. I'm not sure where that information came from, but it's definitely unfortunate if that's the case. Because there were some amazing figures made during that run.
-
I just can't buy into the "we lost the legacy tooling" hypothesis. These tools are expensive and not exactly something you could easily misplace. I'm more of a mind that there's an expense there Hasbro just does not want to spend.
-
I just can't buy into the "we lost the legacy tooling" hypothesis.
Sometimes "we lost the tooling" doesn't mean they physically lost it, but just lost access to using it.
Sometimes the molds are designed to work with a particular set of machines and if Hasbro is no longer using the factory that has those machines or the factory upgraded their machinery such that the old tools don't work with the new machines, then the tooling is essentially "lost".
-
The Legacy Collection tooling issue definitely comes across as odd. But the business side of working with these contractors in China, Vietnam and elsewhere probably has some complications. You would think that perhaps Hasbro could make an effort to own the physical injection mold tools, but I don't know if their contractors would ever agree to that.
-
Good points guys....I didn't really consider that. But Hasbro's a much larger company than other toy manufacturers, you would think they wouldn't have those types of factory problems.
-
So... what do you think they are going to charge us for the all-new ROTJ 40th Anniversary Speeder Bike with Scout Trooper = $40? $50? $60?
It looks like the answer might be $45 according to Jayson's intel... (https://jedidefender.com//jsmentek/yuck.gif)

-
It’ll be interesting to see what kind of improvement this is over the last one, which was pretty solid.
-
That 2012 release was great. I was puzzled at the time about the inclusion of the tripod laser cannon, but it added some value. The $24.99 price tag of the Discover the Force version seemed a little high at the time, but seems far more palatable than $45.
Historically speeder bikes with figures have been priced like this:
1998 POTF2 - $9.99
2002 SAGA Clone Trooper & speeder bike - $9.99
2003 SAGA Anakin & swoop / Dooku & speeder bike - $14.99
2003 CLONE WARS - $9.99
2005 ROTS - $9.99 - $14.99
2008 - 2011 CW / TLC - $15.99 - $19.99
2012 DTF / MH - $19.99 - $24.99
Those price increases from POTF2 up through 2012 were gradual. And the difference between the POTF2 speeder bike to the 2012 version was like night and day. THAT price increase was justified by the jump in quality and the passage of 14 years. But this increase to $45? Hasbro needs to start justifying some of this beyond "the state of the world". Because I am not sure that the possible improvements between the 2012 version and what they plan to release in 2023 is the equivalent of the advancements from 1998 to 2012.
-
I am not sure that the possible improvements between the 2012 version and what they plan to release in 2023 is the equivalent of the advancements from 1998 to 2012.
Not to mention the fact that they will likely amortize the tooling cost by re-issuing this sculpt over and over again - with Endor Luke/Leia/Paploo, with Scout Trooper or IG-11/Grogu for TM, etc.
Like Rob said, it'll be interesting to see what they actually do with this and the Scout Trooper. I've got four of the 2012 TRU bikes and they hold up well. The stands are too tall, but otherwise they are great.
I might pass on the initial pre-order for this and wait to see what happens. Will they release the Scout by himself on a TVC card? Will they do re-issues quickly or space them out? I feel like I'm much more likely to buy a IG-11/Grogu speeder bike repaint than I am yet another ROTJ bike.

That's the business model now, isn't it? Get your money's worth out of the tooling investment. How many times has Hasbro re-released that VC140 Stormtrooper sculpt? I think it's at least 6 times, and it's also the basis for the new VC231 Stormtrooper (along with some improvements), as well as the E-WEB version. I fully expect to see more Stormtroopers based on VC231 in the near future, too.

And it's a shame too. It's made the offerings pretty boring. Nearly everything is a double-dip, or ripe for future double dipping.
Clones, Stormtroopers, Mandos, the Jedi Order 3-Pack, even the Tank Driver has Migs and Din versions... the Bespin Guards,... all the 4-Packs are cool, but all are based on selling you the same thing twice. Then there's always Carbonized or Retro Prototype or they slap a new head on something and call it Photoreal.. You know the OWK Vader is coming in ANH and ROTJ versions...
It feels like quality items that are just going to exist in one form make up like 20% of what's released. I get it, but it's meant far fewer good characters are getting made.
-
Don't forget Figrin D'an! Sell you one on card and release a 7-piece set of the same figure to make the band! They only need to "make" new or reproduce the old instruments.
-

Totally. Or literally all of the deluxe sets. Ahsoka then Ashoka with a cloth cape and another Grogu. The Incinerator Trooper then the Incinerator Trooper with some flames and another Grogu. The Darktrooper that everyone wants 10 or 20 of... Mando then Mando with dirt then Mando with a cloth cape. $25 Boba Fett then $25 Boba Fett with new legs!
It's really not good.
-

I think somebody mentioned that the tech to sculpt in 6" and 3.75" is virtually the same, so once you've sculpted one scale its pretty easy to port it over to the other.
As a result we've also seen a lot of the double dipping and triple and quadruple dipping across the scales. 3.75" and 6" cantina band in different configurations, Shore Troopers, etc.
-
That bothers me less since I don't collect both, but 6" seems to be getting much more product. I with they'd downsize more of them for TVC releases.
-
Oooof. That's a hard one to swallow. I'd have been on board for a few, even with all the eventual re-releases. Agree with all that has been said so far and also want to add that this speeder bike is going to be $5.00 more expensive than the TVC Tatooine Skiff vehicle. I get that the Speeder Bike will have a figure included, but that price is just ridiculous. The skiff is probably 4x bigger.
-
Come on, man...how else is Hasbro going to get that ******* 50% growth? ;D
-
All my laundry list of complaining and I forgot the retro collection prototype debauchery.
Maybe we need a separate thread for bitching.
-
You mean the debauchery that sells out? That people such as myself buy all variations of? I never see this hanging around the stores. Not everyone only buys this stuff because they feel obligated. I just can't justify complaining yet then buying.

It sure seems totally unnecessary to have carded the Scout Trooper in the set. I guess that partially explains the price. I really wish they'd have left the pack-in loose and then put it on a card the next time they inevitably re-release/re-pack it.
-
Yeah, that is weird.
If they were aiming for the old school collecting crew, well we've got plenty of speeder bikes and scout troopers, so I'm not sure what they're doing.
If they're aiming for the younger crowd who missed these over the past couple of decades, well I'm not sure they collect carded vintage collection figures.
It does seem like an unnecessary cost, especially when they're probably just going to release the biker scout on a card, and in a multi-pack 12 months after he comes out with his speeder bike.
-
Only reasons I can think of the figure being carded is to have it numbered and released in the main line (and $$). The last time it was released carded was in the VTSC line, wasn't it?
-
Hasbro is definitely playing to the TVC purists who want EVERYTHING from the Kenner line offered in The Vintage Collection. And some people in that segment of the collecting community refuse to recognize VOTC and VTSC as the progenitors of The Vintage Collection. What's funny about that is that when TVC was launched in 2010, Hasbro management always referred to the concept of "bringing vintage back". So that's largely how we got here.
Now the Biker Scout has new ankles, a resculpted helmet and a VC number. YAY! As for the $45 price tag? Boo!!!!!!!
-
Just posted this in the livestream reactions, but here's where I'm at with the set...
This is the last speederbike we got (https://www.banthaskull.com/photo_galleries/gallery/ph_speeder_bike) in 2012, which was really good, and accurately scaled (but it was a TRU exclusive). It was a fully new sculpt, and didn't have the crappy features of the previous mold that had been used forever. No "fall apart" feature, no spring loaded feet, just a great sculpt and a clear flight stand. I was able to find four of them, and I've always been really happy with them. This new one looks much better, but the price still sucks. I'll probably get two of them and see how I feel after that.
I'm definitely not excited about any new costs from packing a carded figure in a box, since what are those carded collectors going to do? Open a package to get to another package? What kind of Russian Doll collecting bull**** is that? They should have packed a Scout Trooper in this package (non-carded) and then released the Scout Trooper in the main line, since collectors will want multiples. Oh well, I guess we can get multiples in an eventual troop builder.

Do you know if the speederbike will be available from Dorkside too? I like to spread the love around.

Same for me. Ordered the repack wave with the links too but am hoping to cancel those.

Another item coming soon from Amazon. Looks like mine will be here next Wednesday 3/22.

I opened up a pair of these last weekend and even if they’re not really different, I’m glad to have a few more and I really do like the way you can use the stand to set them at a height like they’re parked. I don’t know if I can justify a bunch more of the at this price, but if they go on sale I’d like to get a few more.
-
Amazon had the speeder bike marked down to $25 yesterday... I don't need more but at that price I ordered another pair. Oddly, they're waiting to give me a shipping date, but now they're in stock and $36...

I wouldn't think so. I know there were some on forums (not here) complaining about price and waiting for discount prices. I'm sure those same people complain when Hasbro isn't making x vehicle because it would be too expensive and stores don't want to buy them and lose money on them.

$45 for a speeder bike and scout trooper is kind of a crazy price. I know it might be the new normal, but at some point some of this should resonate with Hasbro that price will have an impact on demand.

I'm hoping they mark down the Mandalorian one soon, as I'd like a few more of those. At this point I've lost count on how many ROTJ speeders I have. And hell, it's going to be hard to not order a couple more now.
