JD Sports Forum! / 2007 NCAA Tourney - Brackets on Yahoo
« on: March 7, 2007, 10:19 AM »
Hey everyone.  I once again made it my annual duty to set up an NCAA tournament bracket league on Yahoo for all of us collectors to take an ill-fated stab (personally speaking :)) at predicting the winners of this year's college hoops tournament.

Other Toy Lines / Flash! AAAAA-AAAAAH!

OK, so I don't give a turd about the bobbleheads, but the Flash and Ming figures are freakin' awesome!  Amazing likenesses to Sam Jones and Max Von Sydow.  I've been wanting Flash Gordon figures since way back when, so it's nice to see some finally being produced.  I can only hope the line is successful and we see some other characters like Klytus, Dale Arden and Vultan.

Is anyone else as stoked about this as I am?  :)

Watto's Junk Yard / Take my $50, please
« on: November 21, 2006, 05:29 PM »
Hey everyone.  I put up a post in the "Other Toys" section a while back, but since this gets a lot more views I thought I'd make a mention here.  (Hope the mods don't mind that it's kind of a duplicate).  A few friends and I recently started up an action figure news and info website called ToyTraderz at www.toytraderz.com.  We're running a contest to get things going, and it's still up for another few days (11/30).  Grand prize is a $50 eBay gift certificate and there's a cool second prize as well.  We're just getting started out, but we think it will be a great resource and is well on its way.

I'd also like to thank the crew here at JD for partnering up with ToyTraderz.  We've made JD our "official" SW site and Jeff was cool enough to make ToyTradez a JD affiliate.

Anyway, I hope you'll consider checking it out.  Thanks for looking:)

Other Toy Lines / OT: ToyTraderz.com "pre-grand opening" & contest
« on: October 23, 2006, 11:18 AM »
Hey everyone.  I just wanted to tell everyone about a site that I’ve been working on along with a couple of fellow collectors.  The site is called ToyTraderz and can be found at http://www.toytraderz.com.  It’s going to be a community-driven site and will eventually house a ton of information and images.  Some of the features include.

Toy Database – This thing is going to be huge.  It’s still in the process of being populated, and when all is said and done will probably have records for close to 15,000 items.

Marketplace – Rather than having sales and buy posts on the forums, we have a section of the site dedicated to this.  You can take bids on items, add images right to the post, and there’s even a feedback section where you can rate people you deal with.

Collector Gallery – Your own hosting for collection images.  Another really killer feature.

Forums & Chat – Both pretty self-explanatory.  :)  We have forums dedicated to some of the more obscure stuff, and we’ll be shaping them over the coming months.

Reviews & Articles – Members can easily submit either to us.  There’s only one up at the moment, but it’s worth the read if you like Alien junk.  ;)

We’ll also be keeping up on current news and convention information.  There will be a los of good stuff for fans of both vintage and modern figure and figure-related items.  As of now the site should still be considered a work-in-progress or in “beta” mode, but we wanted to let everyone know about it and get some people involved.  We hope to have a true Grand Opening some time around the first of the year.

To commemorate our pre-grand opening we’re running a nifty little contest as well, the details of which I’ll keep on the site for now.  On behalf of the staff I hope you’ll all come by and join!  It’s still in progress but we think it’s going to be a really nice resource for collectors and the potential for the community is tremendous.

Thanks for looking!

Other Toy Lines / You give toys a bad name

Lame.

Seriously, is anyone going to buy these?  Have we gotten so desparate for new and "original" action figures that we've had to stoop to making Bon Jovi?  Dare I suggest that Kip Winger might be next in line?

I weep for the toy industry.

Watto's Junk Yard / 10,000 Days
« on: June 1, 2006, 10:59 AM »
Tool's "10,000 Days" has been out for just short of a month now...shame on me for just now getting a topic started on it.  :)

It took me a while to really get into it.  I bought it the day it came out and listened to it that day, but didn't listen to it again for another week.  At first, while I liked it, all I could think was "It's good, but not as good as Lateralus."  Hard to top that CD though.  Now that I've listened to it more and given it a chance to sink in, I can't get it out of my CD player.  I actually think they might have toped their effort of Lateralus, which I thought would be impossible.

Wings For Marie/10,000 Days and Blame Hoffman/Rosetta Stoned are ******* mind blowing, particularly Rosetta Stoned.  Some of the timings and changes in that song took me a few listens to figure out, and I'm usually damn good out figuring out odd times.  :)  Very little 4/4 on the entire album, a lot more polymeters than they've used in the past (how about Danny Carey playing in 3/4 and 5/8 at the same time...bloody freakin' hell), but they continue to use odd times without making some of it incomprehensible.  What I really like about the CD is that it doesn't rely on being heavy as much to relay its more powerful moments, the way Lateralus did and Aenima to a greater degree.    The gradual build-up in "10,000 Days" through the first half of the song is a good example, as is the end of "Right In Two".  And I think Justin Chancellor really established himself with the various melodic basslines in some of the tunes.  About the only song I don't really get into is "The Pot".  Decent riffs, but I'm not a big fan of the way Maynard uses his voice through some of it.

So what do you all think of it?

Watto's Junk Yard / PHP / MySQL...who here knows it?
« on: May 11, 2006, 06:11 PM »
Does anyone here know a bit about PHP and MySQL?  I'm working on developing a website and there are a couple of issues I'm having - one with a search page and another involving an aggregate count of categories, subcategories and content of each.  The support for the CMS I'm using isn't getting me anywhere regarding these problems and I was hoping maybe there was a developer or two here that might be willing to help.  I can probably even pay a couple of bucks if it need be (or buy you a pizza or something).  :)

Thanks for looking.  Please PM or e-mail if you think you might be able to help.

Modern Classifieds / Free: Target ROTS Pack-in coin
« on: December 31, 2005, 03:02 PM »
I have the coin from the ROTS DVD sold at Target that I have no use for.  First person that wants it for the bargain price of $0.00 gets it (I think that converts to 0.00 GBP and $0.00 CDN).  :)  Please PM me - first come first served.

Watto's Junk Yard / Can anyone translate this?
« on: December 25, 2005, 06:40 PM »
http://www.fisheye.co.il/story_3063

I noticed a lot of hits to my website (www.8thpassenger.com) were coming from it, so I thought I'd check and see what it was.  The ribcage-looking thing at the top of the page is part of the Polish poster for the movie Alien, and part way down the page there's a little blurb with a link to my site.  I gotta be honest...I have no freakin' idea what language this is, so I can't even babelfish it.  I've never even seen the com.il domain before.

Any help?

Oh...my...freakin'...god.

http://photos.figures.com/photo/1/showgallery.php?cat=2984

Maybe this is old news to many (it's from SDCC), but I happened to stumble across this tonight looking at the GG Harry Potter busts.  I am absolutely stoked about these, probably more than any "made for collectors" item that has ever been released except maybe the first Palisades Alien bust.  These things look incredible!  Calibos, Medusa, the Kraken...what else would a COTT fan ask for?  Anyone else going to pick these up?  Any idea what the price point is supposed to be?

Watto's Junk Yard / The biggest disappointment in video game history
« on: December 17, 2005, 01:09 PM »
'Tis a sad day for me.  Since it came out in the early 80's, Time Pilot has been one of my favorite video games.  For whatever reason, I could never, ever, ever get past stage 5 - the year 2010.  So I'm playing it on my computer today, kicking some ass, and can you believe it...I make it past 2010!  Years of trying and anticipation, endless quarters stuffed into the machine at the old grocery store at 23rd & Iowa St, and I finally do it.  So after that big UFO explodes and you engage into a time warp again, where does it take you?  Right back to 19-*******-10, the first stage in the game.   :'(  I felt such disappointment, such sadness...I felt like years of effort had all been in vain.  I think I can actually hear the video game gods laughing at me.  Taunting me.

Feeling aggrieved,

John

As sweet as the Kubrick line is, there's no way I'm going to be able to collect them all.  :)  However, I absolutely have to have Snaggletooth & Nien Nunb, two of my all-time favorites.  Can anyone help me out with these?  Thanks in advance.

Watto's Junk Yard / "You whizzed on the electric fence, didn't ya?"
« on: September 26, 2005, 01:33 PM »
So I’ve been in a bit of a Ren & Stimpy mood lately.  Couple that with the fact that I’m devoid of motivation at work today, and I thought I’d share my 5 favorite Ren & Stimpy moments

#5 - Sven Hoek...OK, pretty much the whole Sven Hoek episode.

#4 - Ren drifting into insanity during Space Madness”It is not I who are crazy...it is I who are mad!”

#3 - Log.  Nuff said.

#2 - “Happy Happy, Joy Joy”.  “I told you I’d shoot, but you didn’t believe me!  Whhhyyyy didn’t you believe me!?”

And finally, #1 - In Rubber Nipple Salesmen.  Mr. Horse’s tirade, followed by asking for “rubber walrus protectors”.  ”Call the poleeeeeeece.”  Just thinking about it makes me want to laugh my ass off.  :)  Easily the most insanely absurd R&S moment.

Honorable mention goes to:

- The overemphatic voice of the announcer.  “Amazing new product!”
- Frank Zappa as The Pope.  ”Quick!  Cling tenaciously to my buttocks!” - “Both of them?”

OK, good people of Jedi Defender...share your top Ren & Stimpy moments!

John
