Collections / Display Problem/Solution?
« on: January 2, 2014, 04:50 PM »
OK, so here's the problem.  My studio is in an attic and the walls are sloped.  I have some nice figure shelves from my previous house but can't use them.  I would really like to start displaying my figures again.

So I had this idea that if I use a rack type system, and have the figures held in by some sort of string, I could hang the whole piece on the wall. Like so...

This was my first prototype.  That's clear picture hanging wire.  If I can get out in the next day or so, I need to get some clear elastic.  I'm not sure how this will look, but I have to try something...

Watto's Junk Yard / Computer programming for kids?
« on: May 28, 2013, 09:58 PM »
Hey.  I'm wondering if someone out there could give me some help.  My 1st grade son came home th either day and stated that he wanted to make an App.  He went on Youtube to find out how and was disappointed by the complexity.  (I wanted to make a feature film with special effects in 4th grade, I understand his pain. =)

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could recommend anything for him to work on that would lead him in the right direction...I don't even know what I am asking for here.

Simple programs to write?  Games that teach design?  I have no idea, and feel really clueless.---Mike

The Vintage Collection / TWO LEFT HANDS!
« on: March 25, 2013, 02:05 PM »
Wow.  I have never had this happen before.  I just opened my realistic Clone Wars Obi-Wan and found out he had two left hands.  Has this happened to anyone else?  I have maybe 500 figures with wrist joints, the fact that this has never happened before is pretty amazing.

The Black Series 6" Figures / 6 Inch Figures?
« on: January 28, 2013, 10:06 AM »
It seems that 6 inch figure rumors are floating around, with RS just posting something interesting.  Rumor is that  Gentle Giant and Hasbro who do Marvel Legends together ( is that right?) might have some Star Wars figures in the works.

At this point, I'm totally cool with that idea.  I've always wanted to see larger, well articulated figures.  And while what I love about the 3 3/4 is that the character selection is deep,  I know that larger figure collection won't get into obscure characters.  So, going into I know it will be somewhat limited.  I'm very curious about this if it comes up.  Who knows, maybe there will be some Toy Fair surprises.

The Vintage Collection / Will your collecting habits change?
« on: September 5, 2012, 12:48 AM »
After SDCC, and C6, and seeing what new product Hasbro has on the horizon, I can say that for the first time since 1995, I will not be buying the next line of figures.  I just can't get behind the Droid Factory character choices, as they seem to all be resculpts.  I just can't do it anymore, as much as I'd like to make the new droids.  Granted, I may buy one ore two (I like that Pablo Jill type Jedi) but that's about it.  I'm also done with The Clone Wars line, even though I would support that with great enthusiasm if there were a wide selection of characters.  (Season 4 was a goldmine of coolness...)

That being said, I'm looking at next year, and I have decided to put some money into displays, and instead of wasting time looking for stuff, I will sort and organize what I have.  I'm really excited to do this, and this downtime seems like a great opportunity.  Maybe in the fall of 2013, when AOTC and ROTS hit the big screen again some cool product might show up, I'll jump right back in, but for now, I'm outta here!  (Not here, as in these forums, because this is still fun, but "outta here" as in I'm not buying anything anymore because I have it all and...oh, you get what I mean.)

The Vintage Collection / Celebration VI
« on: August 22, 2012, 04:44 PM »
Not much to say here, but it's been a while that I've had the opportunity to open a thread.  Are we really expecting to see much at C6?  San Diego was such a bust that I hope something interesting materializes.  Also, Is Hasbro doing a Q&A, or just displaying product?

Watto's Junk Yard / COPYRIGHT LAWS and the WEB
« on: March 13, 2012, 08:30 PM »
This is more of a discussion starter, but I'm curious about how people feel about copyright laws and the internet.  I make my living with copyrighted material, but until recently my work (children's books) had never been pirated or bootlegged.  However, I recently saw my graphic novels available as a free download and I got very angry.

Happily, I ma not a hypocrite.  I can honestly say that I have only once downloaded an album for free.  It was something I had been waiting for a long time for, and I was really excited for it.  However, when it came out officially, I bought a CD.  I also have never watched a downloaded movie, except for 20 minutes of Iron Man  that was playing in a classroom at the high school I was teaching in on the last day of school.

I am very disturbed by this recent trend that some people think that entertainment is a right, and not something to be paid for.

Another thing that is bothering me are the other flagrant violations of copyright that I am seeing every day.  On Rebelscum, they had an article and link to a guy on Kickstarter who was raising money to make Star Wars infant clothes.  He didn't have a license.  Why should he get to sell his Star Wars stuff without paying Lucasfilm, when someone like Asley Eckstien is paying a license for her Star Wars product.  And please don't tell me that the Kickstarter guy "isn't making a lot"...that's not the issue.

Thoughts?

The Vintage Collection / New York Comic Con 2011
« on: August 1, 2011, 02:46 PM »
So Hasbro said they will be at NYCC this year promoting SW.  They have been there in the past, but have not promoted anything SW.  That being said, I wonder if they will have an exclusive?

I will be there.  In fact, unless something business realted (at the Con) comes up, I will go to the Hasbro presentation and maybe even do a live blog or something.  I've gotta use my ipad for something other than skecthing!---Mike

The Vintage Collection / SDCC 2011
« on: June 21, 2011, 04:12 PM »
Alright.  We're about a month away from Comic Con.  If I remember correctly, all sorts of stuff started leaking about this time last year.  Maybe I'm wrong.

Either way, what are your SDCC expectations.

I'm hoping to see a few more Vintage waves, and what they have planned for the 3D E1 release.  Maybe that Tuantaun. I know, I think, that I kinda remember hearing something about there maybe being some possible surprises and stuff.  Any guesses?

Will we get a sneal peak at the next BMF?  Or will that be at Toyfair?

Watto's Junk Yard / Speedermike on Celebrity Apprentice
« on: March 7, 2011, 09:21 AM »
Hey guys, I thought you might like to know about this.  My ugly mug is going to be on national TV.

On March 13, I will be in "Celebrity Apprentice" on NBC.  I shot my episode back in October.  I was on camera for about 10 hours, working closely on a project with one of the teams.  I can't say more until it has aired.  In all honesty, if I end up with 30 seconds of screen time, I'll be happy.

The following morning, I will be posting a story about the day of the shoot on my blog.

The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Republic Attack Shuttle
« on: January 15, 2011, 12:25 PM »
Looks like this is confirmed  (on RS) as the next BMF type vehicle/playset.  Should be cool.  Toy Fair should show is more.

The Vintage Collection / Toy Fair 2011
« on: January 4, 2011, 10:56 AM »
It's that time of year again!   Time for imaptient goofs like myself to start daydreaming about Toy Fair.  At this point, I know to expect less than we were once used to, because Hasbro holds stuff for SDCC. While I don't understand this, since Toy Fair is for retail buyers, and SDCC for Fans, I have come to accept it.

I hope to see a few new waves of TVC and TCW figs.  I'm really hoping to see Dr. Ezavan painted up.  He's been my most wanted fig for years.

I am curious to see if there will be any special products for the Blu-Ray release.  While I'm not into packaging gimmicks, the Target Exclusive 9 pack format would be great.  Maybe one for each trilogy?

We have heard rumors of another big vehicle, but nothing concrete.  My guess is the Attack Shuttle from TCW. Maybe there will be some small vehicles we aren't expecting.  Who knows...

Feel free to jump in any time.

The Vintage Collection / What is your Focus?
« on: December 4, 2010, 11:48 AM »
Aftre seeing the new vintage figures today (RFT, Bom and all) I was reminded about one of the most problematic elements of a Star Wars toy line.  SW has gotten so big, and has had some many different sub-catagories, that it seems that fandom has split apart to the point where no one seems interested in everything.  I was shocked to hear people saying that the new vintage weren't characters they were inteseted in, or jumping up and down for the EU girl, or saying they "only buy Jedi" or "only buy aliens."  I guess I didn't realize how many people has such a narrow focus on what they collect.

So here's my question.  What is your main SW focus?  Personally, I try to like it all.  (Some EU stuff doesn't look SWish to me.)  So, if you had to choose only one catagory what would it be.

Aliens
Jedi
Imperials
Main characters
OT
PT
EU
TCW
Clones
or, any specific film, book, or game.

Now, I buy one of each carded fig.  Even EU as long as I don't have to search hard for it.  But if I had to choose, I would say OT.  Anything from the OT, aliens, main characters, rebels, imperials, obscure oddities...and I mean anything.  If I was forced to be more specific, I would only buy things from ANH.  What about you?
