Title: The UGP at CIV - The Official Web Coverage and Picture Thread
Post by: Phrubruh on May 24, 2007, 01:25 AM
Day 1 Wednesday 9:30am

Well, we got there at 9:30 this morning to find out that none of the tables where setup at all. Frank didn't arrive until the afternoon. We unloaded the cars and dragged it all upstairs and organized ourselves. We cut up the board and layed out the vinyl flooring. Then we made lots of calls to the gencon staff wondering where our tables were. We went back and for hours with Gencon and the union workers about what they would and wouldn't do. We wondered around the convention and checked out hasbro booth. You guys are in for a great treat when the pictures are posted!!! Torcher Han, concept yoda, obiwan, girl luke and concept grevious where all there. The alien grevious looked cool as did yoda on his horse. They have a ep2 jedi star fighter with hyperspace boost ring. Lots of great stuff!!! We had lunch down at the Original Pantry.

Finally the union workers got our tables out and setup then up at 6:00PM!!!! They then wanted to place a plastic sheet over the tables which took another half hour. By then we were completely pissed because the convention center made us leave at 8pm. We quickly got the base in place and leveled everything. We got the landscape in place and the wall. We unpacked everything and placed it on the table for setting up tomorrow morning at 8am. The doors to the fan club open at noon.

The nice thing though is that they let us into shop star wars and we each picked up four exclusive r2-d2, c3po concept figures. Anyway, enjoy the pictures below.

Guys, I have to say - WOW! :o

Seeing your stuff first hand is truly jaw dropping. There's a lot of amazing work on that table.

Despite the setback, it was great time yesterday, between being there, handling the pieces and getting to work with Paul and Ryan, you couldn't ask for a better way to spend a day. Also, Frank and his crew are just amazingly great people.

I'm really bummed we couldn't finish last night. I was really looking forward to setting up figures. Paul and Ryan get that pleasure today. ;)

They let us in at 9am when they originally said 8am. That gave us three hours to setup. They let everyone in at noon and we didn't finish setting up figures until 2pm. I've got to thank Darth_Kenobi for helping set up and run the booth for me when Ryan left.  I got interviewed by something called the Gamer Weekend. I don't know what that is but it should be on the web somewhere. We've constantly had a crowd around us. I'm betting we had close to 3000 people come by today to take pictures and video.

As Brent Said AWESOME, it looks beautiful, the diorama really looks like a real city, so many different people, and alien species. Such Diversity is what we expect when you have a city from starwars, and this blends into that niche perfectly. :D THIS IS SOOOO GONNA BE ON G4 TV tonight. :-*

Wow!  That is just A-Ma-Zing!    :o It's especially neat to see how you've interpreted the roles and functions of the various custom figures people hve sent in -- very creative.  8)

Thank you guys so much for your very hard work in setting this wonderful thing up -- I know it hasn't been easy, between late openings, union workers, and the like.

Congratulations on a job very well done -- can't wait to see it in person real soon!  :)

... the Findswoman, who will be there Saturday and maybe part of today (Friday), too

O...M...G...!!!!  I can't describe how it feels seeing this put together!  You guys did a WONDERFUL job putting it together; I love the little vignettes around the city!  I see my bounty hunter Syka Dellik is being interrogated by a group of Imperials while sitting on one of the benches I made!  Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic!

OH. MY. GOD.

You guys would not believe the traffic you guys are getting. I walked in at 4pm for my first shift and was floored to find a swarm of people around the table taking pictures. Seriously, everybody is making comments and saying how impressed they are. On occasion there would be a brief lull, but not for very long. There was a fairly constant flow of people. My mouth kept going dry from talking to everyone. I'm happy to say that it's a huge hit, everyone should be very proud.

And to whomever painted the Cylon, a certain BSG/ST producer got a HUGE kick out of it.

Yeah, Anthony speaks the truth.  I obviously wasn't involved with the UGP at all, but I've stopped by the booth several times over the past couple days since I'm often hanging out with Ryan or Anthony, and each time I've visited, the table's been nearly completely surrounded by by fans and onlookers.  And not just people that walk by and take a passing glance, but folks who really stop and walk around the whole setup very slowly, closely analyzing the detail, and taking pictures.  Kids are obviously digging it as well (though it teases the hell out of them since they want to get in there and play with it all).

Anyway, from an unbiased third party's perspective, I can honestly tell all of you guys that this thing's a big hit, and looks great!  Obviously massive thanks go out to Ryan, Anthony, and especially Paul for putting the whole thing together out here, and keeping an eye on things (Tom too).  Great dedication, and super results.  I have to admit, there were some times several months back, and even up 'til fairly recently, that I had some concerns that things might not work out too well.  But those concerns were completely alleviated when I saw the booth Thursday morning and could tell that you all came through with flying colors.

So kudos to everyone involved, and again, especially Paul for spearheading this monster.  Well done!

- Matt

Truly an awesome work & I am so jealous that I couldn't be there in person!!! But I am filled with joy to see this come to such a wonderful fruition ;D

I'm glad that everyone is loving it so much, and the fact that a BSG person saw & dug the cylon is too frackin' cool! :D

The response has been truely fantastic. There were constantly people video taping the entire layout. Lots of large professional cameras filming it every so often too. I've got some great pictures of the Emporer and Mara Jade surveying the dio. Even "George Lucas" came by and checked it out and did his impression of playing god over it. We've got Jedistyle's banner on the table. Lots of people want to know about customizing and how we did this. They had lots of fun finding Lucas, Anthony Daniels and the Cylon. The biggest kick most people got was finding Twiky in the junk yard! I've got to get the actor that played Twiky over to the diorama to see himself. He's signing autographs. I hope this rekick starts our hobby. I've directed them all here to our customizing forums so be on your best behavior and welcome our new guests. ;D

yea, it really did come out great, especially since they where shorted on set up time. i was there on friday and today and i can say that there was easily douvble the amount of people at the table today. there really wasn't a moment when there wasn't at least 10 people checking it out and taking pics or video, but more often there was about 20 people around it and all of them have nothing but great things to say. during my shift at the table today, myself and ryan where interviewed by spike tv about the project, it's supposed to air sometime in the next week on spiketv.com , thats pretty cool, some really good exposure for the project. so far C4 has ben very cool and the UGP has done great!

Amen my friends.  I can only echo what everyone else has said.  The reception of the UGP has been amazing.  Imagine the entire perimeter completely surrounded by fans.  So many parents and kids were around enjoying the entire display.  I was shocked to see people walking around the whole display with VIDEO cameras.  Awesome stuff!   Everyone who participated should be very proud.

Here are some close up shots of the diorama. Some special guests came by to check it out. Alot of new figures where added on saturday including a ship flying in. The last picture shows the typical amount of people that were surrounding our table. Anthony Daniels checked it out and so did Hasbro. Hasbro was probably looking for new ideas.

Smartypants even had someone offer to buy one of his figures!!! Anyway, we packed everything for shipping and loaded it in the car in about three hours. We left alot of boxes and the main board for the union workers to clean up.  ;) Here are some pictures from Frank's Endor and some more of us.

Another big batch of pictures has been added into the UGP Section in our Image Database (http://www.jedidefender.com/gallery/imageFolio.cgi?direct=Conventions/Celebration_IV/Ultimate_Group_Project). Big thanks go out to Darth Anton for letting us have some of his pictures. Notice there are a few shots of the giveaway there, I couldn't even fit everyone into the frame there were so many of them. I was absolutely blown away by the amount of traffic we had throughout the weekend and by the turnout at the giveaways.

I want to thank everyone for participating. It was truly a pleasure to work with all of you and see all of your work in person. I'd be lying if I said this ran nice and smooth, but in the end when it mattered the most we pulled it off and made this work. It was worth it in then end and I'm glad we stuck with it. I'll be the first to admit how worried I was for a while there, but after getting this setup all of my fears vanished.

I'd like to give a very special thanks to Darth Anton. We really couldn't have done this without you. You were a machine this weekend. I think you put in more time at the booth than anyone else. Having you there to help setup on Wednesday was immensely helpful. Paul and I would have been lagging behind if you weren't there. Your ingenuity and creativity really added to the project. That frisking scene was a classic. You were a great help at the giveaway too, Paul would have been mobbed without you. It was great to finally meet you, and I look forward to seeing you again at CV! :)

I'd also like to thank Darth Kenobi. Tom it was very kind of you to volunteer so much of your time to look after our diorama. Considering you had very little to do with the UGP up until this weekend, I can't tell you how much we appreciated that. I wish you could have hung around a little later at the Hard Rock so we could hang out more, but it was also great meeting you as well.

Brent, it was great to meet you as well. You contributed so much to this whole project. Your trees and buildings looked fantastic and this diorama would have been incomplete without them. Considering you only made it out for the weekend it was immensely generous of you and your son to spend so much of your time at the booth. I wish circumstances had been different and you could have stayed for the whole convention. Thanks again for everything you did, it was a pleasure working with you and I look forward to doing again!

Another big thanks goes out to jedistyle. Thanks so much for all your contributions. That banner was fantastic. It sure was great to have you aboard, you should have been the project secretary from Day 1. I'd like to thank you as well for all the time you spent at the booth. And I'd really like to thank you for being there with me when we got interviewed by Spike, I'll still look like a moron, but at least there are two other people on screen to distract from that a bit.  ;) I think the girl that interviewed us is distraction enough though... she was the only reason I said yes. :P

And a very, very special thanks goes out to Master Phruby. Without your dedication and idea this project would have never happened. It takes serious commitment to have all of those packages at your house for the last month. I was getting sick of just seeing mine at my house... The rest of the JediDefender crew and I, would like to give you are sincerest thanks for running the project here. Should we decide on doing the UGP v2.0 you are more than welcome to bring it back here. You deserve a metal. It was great to meet you and you can count on me again next time!

And thanks to everyone else back on the homefront for your various contributions, whether they were figures, buildings, ships, or money. Everyone can pat themselves on the back for a job well done!

I'm in between meetings at work right now.  But I really wanted to echo everything Ryan said.  Big Props go out to everyone who helped man the booth at the show.  As you can see in the photos, it was wide open and it could have been a major "loot" fest.  I think the crowd was VERY respectful of the whole project but it really helped having people look after the display!

It would have been a loot fest if it wheren't for those helping watch the table. Besides, alot of people had questions. Alot of people though these were all hasbro figures. They were shocked to find out that they were all hand made. People also wanted to know how much the whole thing was worth and how much we spent on it.
