Title: College Football 2008
Post by: Matt on July 30, 2008, 06:58 PM
One month and counting until the start of college football.  August 30 can't get here soon enough, as far as I'm concerned.

Worse...Tech Grad...at least Baylor wins in Baseball and Basketball(Men's) once in a while.

The Red Raiders will win 7 or 8, go to a mid-level bowl and I am ok with that.  This pre-season #14 ranking just further proves PRE-season polls are Useless, not that I am complaining, but I am a realist.

Ohio State will undoubtedly be in the title game again thanks to the crappy Big Ten.  At least USC might tag a loss on them during the regular season.  Maybe.

Yeah, that was disappointing.  But it's not quite over yet... there's going to be a lot of one-loss teams out there especially with Georgia getting steamrolled at the moment...

Dammit - spoke too soon on Georgia too.   :P

Go Utes.  Again.  6-0, and the first team to lock in eligibility for a bowl.

And it's interesting to note that the non-BCS MWC is now 6-1 against the Pac-10.

Chip on my shoulder?

Maybe.  Yeah.  A little.

Pretty easy schedule the rest of the way...

@ Purdue
Northwestern
Michigan
@ Wisconsin
Iowa

@ Purdue and Wisconsin are really tough and the Gophers have been terrible vs both those teams for years...we'll see.  This sort of reminds me of the 1997 Final Four run where they just kept winning and winning and not many people paid much attention to them

Well, the last time Tech beat Texas was 2002, the same year Texas A&M beat (a #1 ranked) Oklahoma. Can the same thing happen next week?

No, it won't
Title: Re: College Football 2008

Last nights Tech game was the greatest game I have ever seen them play, including that Bowl game where they got the opposing Coach fired.

I assume from all the Text Messages I got from friends and fellow Grads, that I must be the only Tech fan who was not there.

Having been a Tech fan long enough, I know that they will choke in one or all of the next 3 and last nights game will be useless.

Oh well we are Bowl Eligible.  Let's Hope Cotton Bowl...30 minute drive to the game.

Now to the BCS.... If there are any 1 loss teams ahead of Tech in the Rankings, then the whole BCS is bogus. I don't think they deserve  #1, (Alabama has earned that)...but I don't think USC, Oklahoma or Florida(sorry Rob) should be ahead of a 9-0 team from a BCS Conference.

If Florida can't figure out how to be a 1-loss team in the championship, I'd like them to end up here as well.

But it's more like a 3 minute drive for me.   ;D

The whole BCS thing is already bogus.  It's lame, there should be a 4 or an 8 team playoff and just about everyone who is even mildly interested in college football agrees.  Who is on the bubble between slot 4 and 5 or between slot 8 and 9 is far less consequential than leaving an undefeated team out of the top 2.  Of course, everyone keeps saying that this thing is too entrenched and that we'll never see it...

That said, Florida ****** themselves with that 1 point loss - because since then they have been the best team in the country, steam rolling Arkansas 38-7, embarrassing No. 4 LSU 51-21, killing Kentucy 63-5, and yesterday throttling No. 6 Georgia 49-10.

That's 201 points scored vs. 43 points given up, and with two top 6 teams in that mix.

I do think that to get in it'll take Penn State or Tech being upset, but if they end up playing Alabama in the SEC championship game and beat the snot out of them too, then they should most definitely be the first 1-loss team up for consideration.

The new BCS standings will be interesting to see.  I think Florida could be as high as 4.

Updating game scores since the 1 point loss:

Win at Arkansas - 38-7
Win over No. 4 LSU 51-21
Win over Kentucy 63-5
Win at neutral site over No. 6 Georgia 49-10.
Win at Vanderbilt 42-14
Today they lead No. 25 South Carolina 56-6 in the 4th.

That's 299 to 63 over the last 23.5 quarters of football.

There's no question that if they beat Alabama in the SEC title game they belong in the championship game.

Oh, and the 3 wins before the 1 point loss were 56-10, 26-3, and 30-6

Yes the real Texas Tech showed up last night.  I am disappointed but not shocked.  Sadly because they are Tech, they will get relegated to a 2nd Tier bowl....  Hopefully one far enough away to not feel the need to attend.

Florida vs. Oklahoma.  Anything else would be a travesty (unless by some miracle the 12-0 Utes get a shot, as the highest ranked undefeated team  ;D (but having Urban Meyer in it is close enough)).

I'd love for the Utes to play USC or Alabama.  I think we could beat either of those teams.  It will be interesting to see how the chips fall....

Congrats Rob!

Hell of a game tonight, a lot closer (well, not closer, maybe, but definitely lower-scoring) than anybody thought it would be.  OU played well, but Florida played better, and their D stepped up and made the big plays when they needed to.

How many national championships is that for football and basketball down there this decade?  Good lord.

Thanks Matt!

That's 2 basketball and 2 football championships since 2006.   ;D

Definitely a fun time to be a Gator fan.

I really thought OU was going to win this one... every one of my teams that has gotten to a championship match-up since I started watching sports has one it with the exception of the Rays.  I thought it was going to end here and I really felt that way until about the 12:00 mark.

OU left 14 points on the board in that first half... even if they'd just kicked the FG instead of going for it on 4th they'd have been driving for a game tying score in the 4th instead of rushing along trying to get two scores with a few minutes left.

Basically, it was a close game (like most of us expected) but it was even closer than the final score.

I didn't even stick around to see the final score.  I left when it was 24-14, right after OU turned it over on downs.  I've seen enough Gatorade showers from the other side of the field, you know?  Didn't need to see this one, too.

The subjective superfan in me thinks the team with the best record is the best team in the NCAA.  But the objective observer in me thinks these final AP rankings are pretty damn close:

Quote
1. Florida (48) 13-1 1,606
 2. Utah (16) 13-0 1,519
 3. USC (1) 12-1 1,481
 4. Texas 12-1 1,478
 5. Oklahoma 12-2 1,391
 6. Alabama 12-2 1,264
 7. TCU 11-2 1,193
 8. Penn State 11-2 1,153
 9. Ohio State 10-3 1,013
10. Oregon 10-3 997
11. Boise State 12-1 938
12. Texas Tech 11-2 916
13. Georgia 10-3 903
14. Mississippi 9-4 857
15. Virginia Tech 10-4 713
16. Oklahoma State 9-4 534
17. Cincinnati 11-3 506
18. Oregon State 9-4 467
19. Missouri 10-4 435
20. Iowa 9-4 317
21. Florida State 9-4 246
22. Georgia Tech 9-4 223
23. West Virginia 9-4 144
24. Michigan State 9-4 138
25. Brigham Young 10-3 137

Second place with a perfect record, wins over 4 ranked teams, whipping Alabama, all while being from a non-BCS conference...pretty good year for the Utes (honestly, I'm just happy we came in ahead of USC  ;D).  And I still have a man crush on Urban Meyer from his time at Utah, so I can't be too bitter.

The subjective superfan in me thinks the team with the best record is the best team in the NCAA.

If we had a playoff I'd agree completely.  But since we don't, and the best teams don't sort each other out, we have to live with this obnoxious system to do that for us.  It's utter crap, but I think it's fair to declare UF the best team after everyone they've beaten since the 1-point loss.

January 9, 2009: Tebow Skips Senior Season, Ascends Directly Into Heaven (http://www.sportingpress.com/sporting_press/2009/01/tebow-skips-senior-season-ascends-directly-into-heaven.html)

Quote

MIAMI (SP) -- Shortly after leading the Florida Gators to a national
championship with a 24-14 win over Oklahoma, junior quarterback Tim
Tebow announced that he would skip his senior season and ascend
directly into heaven.

Tebow entered the press room to wild applause. A reporter for a 24-
hour cable sports network burst into tears when the 2007 Heisman
winner entered the room. Another threw a pair of boxer shorts on the
podium. Tebow smiled at the gesture and several sports reporters
fainted.

"Sorry I'm late," Tebow began. "There was a six-year-old boy with
cancer in row 54 and I had to make my way through the crowd to heal
him."

"I want to start by saying that playing quarterback for the University of Florida, winning two national championships, has been a great honor. There has been some speculation about my future and I want to clear that up right now," he continued.

"Don't go, Tim!" a reporter shouted from the back of the room.

"After much consideration, I have decided to skip my senior season at the University of Florida and ascend directly into Heaven," Tebow announced. Upon making the announcement, Tebow was bathed in a blinding white light and vanished.

In response to the news, ESPN announced they will have a month-long tribute to Tebow. ESPN2 will now be known as ESPN-TEBOW and will feature Tebow highlights (including home videos of Tebow's childhood), re-airings of past interviews, Tebow-centric analysis by ESPN air personalities, a Tebow quiz show and a reality show to find the "most Tebow-like" person in America.

"He wasn't just the greatest player in college football history," said a college football writer at the press conference, tears streaming down his face. "He might have been the greatest person to ever walk on earth."
