Children's Artwork of Star Wars
« on: May 21, 2003, 05:55 PM »
Wanted to share this beautiful piece of artwork I found over on Something Awful's website (click here to go to it).  I will include the review they did on this picture (listed in yellow) and they were pretty harsh toward George Lucas, but I thought the drawing was pretty good for a 10-year old.  These are the kind of pictures I used to draw all the time when I was a kid.  Did anyone here ever draw pictures like this when you were a kid?

I really am in shock after seeing this picture. It's got tons of action, explosions, lasers, and plenty of neatness. Sure it's rather crude, but Andrew clearly has the same emotional maturity as George Lucas. If that bearded bastard can make hundreds of millions of dollars adding laser effects and crappy CG characters to ever inch of film space he can get his inept hands on, then this picture qualifies as good art. I never thought I'd be this generous, especially since my aim is to be mean and hateful, but I suppose I have to be objective from time to time.

Additional Comments: Good job, your special effects really are a step above Industrial Light and Magic.
Final Grade: A+

Ah yes, that certainly brings back memories.  Nice picture there too BTW!  Like you Chris (and probably most others here), I used to do doodle Star Wars drawings all over the place as a kid.  Wasn't much of an artist, but creating those incredible space battles, and drawing the many various characters was always a blast!  I'm sure I've still got some of my old drawings floating around somewhere up in my parent's attic with a lot of my old elementary school stuff...  I'll have to try to fish them out next time I'm out at their place.

So does anyone else have some of their childhood Star Wars drawings handy?  I'd love to see some here!

I would love to see anyone's drawings from their childhood.  I don't have any on me, but I'll have to see what I can dig up.  That picture above wasn't drawn by me, but it looks just like something I would have drawn back in the days.

As we speak I am searching for my Star Wars comics I made, I created this awesome Stormtrooper helmet design, that I remember, and the good guys were basically X-Men... like Slash, he had a claw in each palm he could use to cut up Sand People, Stormies, etc.

Oh yes, and there was certainly an Ewok issue.

Funny thing being a tad older than you guys.  My main drawing days were pre-SW so at that time I was absolutely fascinated (and not even remotely understanding the horror of) with WWII.  All I drew were pictures of the British fighting the Nazis.  Planes, ships, tanks, infantry, submarines, scuba divers, you name it, I drew it.

Sad commentary:  were a kid to draw now what I drew then, I suspect they would be in for some serious long term counseling.  Fascination with war, particularly Nazi military machines (spent my youth building Tamiya model kits, predominantly German), weaponry.  Yup, sign him up for remedial politically correct behaviour classes.  And be careful he doesn't go postal.

I suspect SW gets a pass because it is fantasy.   Glad that it is and does.  Nice piece up there, very reminiscent of the old drawings I did.

I used to draw those kind of things too... actually more than drawings Star Wars scenes.  My favorite WWII scenes was recreating D-Day.  I used to draw a mean tank back then.  Wish I had saved all my drawings/artwork... it would have been great to look back on it.

I drew mostly war scenes and not SW since when I was a kid I wasn't that big into the movie, I knew about them and like them but wasn't a fan like I am today. Instead of the Nazis I usually drew battles between the the US and Japan in the ocean.  On the other hand I did use my plastic little army men as Nazis and had them fight the US and had some great battles with Naplam and other stuff. ;D

When I was in middle school in one of my classes we had to create a country and come up with its economy and cities so my country was "War Land" and its capital was Warsaw with other war theme cities.  I propbally couldn't do this today as someone might think I'm some mean war monger.

Heh, yep, lighter fluid and in the glory days, firecrackers.  Used the cheaper models for those.  Quite entertaining though I recall the fumes as being rather toxic.  Tragically, firecrackers are illegal in Canada now.

Brad's Star Wars Art (When I was FIVE!)
I promised in a thread a while back that I would dig up some of my early Star Wars art and post it here... Well, here it is! I was probably about 5 years old when I drew this - I can't say that my skills have improved all that much, either. :P

I dug that thread up for ya' Brad, and merged your post into it.  Interesting stuff, though I'd say I'm more partial to some of your more recent work...   ;)
