I loved it too.  Those Rivendell scenes while not in the proper novel are in one of the appendices.  I think it does a nice job fleshing out why Gandalf gets involved with these guys in the first place, which always puzzled me when I first read it many years ago.

I loved the film.

Then there's the resolution.  The image resolution has been increased far beyond current HDTV standards.  The images in The Hobbit  will have 4 - 5 times more pixels than a standard 1080p HD image.  So the image will be immensely sharper, too.
Even most digital presentations far exceed 1080P, and film stock definitely does.  48FPS is not about the resolution of the frames, but the number of them.  The 24FPS version will have the same resolution, just fewer frames.  The 4K is completely independent of the 48FPS.  Most BluRay discs masters are 4K transfers downgraded to 1080P.

That said, I agree with all your points.

Get your Qui-Gon, Naboo Soldier and assorted pod racers while you can (which is forever).

Honestly, I don't actively collect anymore, but I do check every time I go into a department store, and I have never seen it as bad as it is now.  I wanted to grab a Bespin Han, and never saw it, so I am kind of glad he's returning, but I would rather hear that 5 Below is getting these things since I feel that a SW figure is worth $5, not $10.  I got out when those prices shot up to $8 arouund RotS.

For clarity's sake, existing film stock for the past forever still contains more image "data" than HD or even the new 4K process.  This 48FPS does not contain more "resolution" than a 24FPS presentation does, just twice as many frames per second.

This was a pricing error, I think.

In fairness though, the OTC one was pretty spectacular too.

Don't know what it is about this picture, but I think she looks hot here:

The Sequel Trilogy / Re: Disney Buys LFL
« on: November 20, 2012, 11:00 AM »
Fox does own the distribution rights for the first film, so it could throw some drama into the reality of this happening. They don't own anything else about the films except that, but it is sort of a big deal.  This is more like WalMart buying the EXCLUSIVE distribution rights to a product, and then the manufacturer trying to sell it at another distributor.  The manufacturer would have to wait for those rights to expire (which they won't here; Fox owns them in perpetuity) or the manufacturer and the distributors would have to hammer out an agreement.

I believe at some point in the next few years we'll get pre-97 cuts of the films.  I know there is murkiness with the rights to Star Wars, but I am sure that Fox would be happy to share in some revenue on a 35 year old film.

The Original Trilogy / Re: Force lightening

Maybe the training isn't so much about the powers themselves, but more about developing the maturity not to use superhuman powers for personal gain.  When Yoda and Ben are training Luke, their backs are against the wall.  They have to pray (to the midichlorians) that Luke's character is firmly developed enough to resist the temptation of using his powers for gain, that he's a good person.

So what do you think Luke's plan was when he tosses the lightsaber away?  He's not going to fight his father, Vader has not yet been redeemed and Palpatine obviously has control of the situation.  If he doesn't see the lightning attack coming, where did he think the confrontation was going to go?  I'm not sure that he knew about the lightning or how to stop it, but he had to think Palps was going to attack with something more than words.

He was planning on being killed along with Palpatine when the rebels blew up the Death Star.

One of the biggest gripes I have with AotC and RotS is Sith Lightning.  How awesome would it be if this was a little trick that Palpy kept to himself until he was utterly backed against the wall?  It cheapens it in RotJ, IMO.

Carol did not die on screen.

Now that you are caught up, you are in the same boat as the rest of us; hopelessly addicted having trouble waiting for our next fix.

Another terrible idea I thought of...Darth Maul is also of right now in SW Canon alive again...ugh

Hate that too.  Maybe we'll see someone taking on Vader's outfit, impersonating him.  Then Luke has to clear Anakin's name.  Wow.  That sounds lame as I type it.

I didn't loathe the first one, and this new one looked decent.  I really liked Renegades.
