Watto's Junk Yard / Re: A thread about concerts.
« on: November 28, 2012, 04:37 PM »
A little late in adding this one, but last month I got to attend Love for Levon at the New Jersey Meadowlands.  It was a tribute to the late singer & drummer of The Band, Levon Helm.  Levon passed during the spring, but his dying wish was that his friends and family keep his Woodstock, NY barn / studio running, along with the series of performances called the Midnight Ramble.

This was really an amazing experience, and one of the more moving concerts I've ever attended!  Especially when you look at the roster of artists who turned up:

•Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)
•John Mayer
•My Morning Jacket
•Eric Church
•Ray LaMontagne
•Dierks Bentley
•Joe Walsh (The Eagles, The James Gang)
•Gregg Allman (The Allman Brothers Band)
•Grace Potter (Grace Potter & The Nocturnals)
•Garth Hudson of The Band
•Marc Cohn
•Jakob Dylan (The Wallflowers)
•Mike Gordon (Phish)
•Warren Haynes (The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule)
•John Hiatt
•Bruce Hornsby
•Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna)
•The Levon Helm Band
•John Prine
•Robert Randolph (Robert Randolph & The Family Band)
•Mavis Staples (The Staples Singers)
•Lucinda Williams
•Don Was

The whole show was recorded, and I expect that it's going to be released on BluRay / DVD some time in the next year.  Proceeds from the concert went to helping keep Levon's barn going.

I have to find them first, you know.

I understand...  ;)  Plus I know you are busy with much more important things as well (or will be).  ;D

NP!

Definitely very busy, but I squeezed in a visit to 2 x 5 Belows.  No Gammies yet.

I am beyond annoyed with my cable provider.  I've got my DVR set to record all first run episodes of Clone Wars.  And someone in the chain has apparently screwed up by not tagging the past few episodes as new or first run.

Is it the cable provider just dropping the ball?  Or is this perhaps Lucasfilm not providing the first run tags in an effort to help drive downloads or DVD sales from people who weren't able to DVR the show?

The Bullpen / Re: Iron Man 2 Toys

Ah, yes!  Now I remember these.  Looks like someone in the factory got a hold of some molds and decided to make their own.  I'm kind of surprised that Tunghori didn't get in on the action.

I'm guessing that since Target had that exclusive pack with Iron Man Mk V, Whiplash with lightning effects & the Naval Hammer Drone sitting around that they weren't keen to bite on this other exclusive.  But the Iron Man Mk V armor was EVERYWHERE, and the line as a whole didn't sell as well as Hasbro had probably hoped.  And I think that probably trumped the potential appeal of that Black Widow figure as well as the no helmet Iron Man and War Machine.

The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Re: Walmart Black Friday 8-Packs
« on: November 24, 2012, 09:57 PM »
I tried to find the CW 8-pack with SCUBA Ahsoka, but the store I went to was pretty well cleared out.  That version of Ahsoka is the only CW figure I haven't found this year, and I'm okay with getting it via online retail at this point.  Getting the 8-pack seems almost wasteful.

@Nicklab you can check that War Machine out a little here:  http://www.blackactionfigure.com/?p=151

Interesting.  So I gather it's a comic series figure based on the armor design.  I thought that there had been no-helmet movie versions of both Iron Man and War Machine in the works for the figure line, but I guess not.

I only hit a single WalMart yesterday.  I can't abide dealing with Black Friday crowds.  And I barely saw any of the value 8-packs during that single store visit.

Looking forward, I'm really interested to see what Hasbro has in store for the Iron Man 3 figure line.  Based on the trailers it looks like the number or armors in Tony's arsenal is going to increase dramatically.  I guess we'll see at Toy Fair since the new movie is due in May 2013.

Now does Pilot Luke include the electronic lightsaber, too?  IIRC, the MH version of Hoth Pilot Luke has that winch backpack.  And I believe I had seen word of an electronic lightsaber version of Luke, too.  But they can't have combined the two features into one figure, right?

I got Pilot Luke yesterday (before the mob attacks, I wanted another pilot Luke figure and figured I might as well for for a different one) and there is no light-up saber. I too remember hearing that it would be light-up, but I guess it didn't pan out on Hasbro's end or it was just mixed-up reports from other parties. Hopefully we'll get a light-up farmboy Luke sometime soon... I'm not sure how well Luke's other outfits would work with their skinny appearance.

Yeah, it seemed like it would be odd if that figure would have both the grappling line feature AND the electronic lightsaber.

I'm thinking that the electronic lightsaber Luke is probably going to be a ROTJ Luke.  Farmboy Luke has the lightsaber, but never really used it in any kind of a fight on-screen.

The thing is there are actually some semi-interesting things in the Movie Heroes line like these figures.  But I think that most of the collecting websites have pretty much ignored the MH line since Hasbro basically told us that the line was simply a vehicle for getting those kid interest figures out to market.

I saw one site report that someone had gotten Jocasta Nu already.  But has Brians Toys started charging anyone's cards yet?  I certainly haven't seen that charge hit my own card yet.

here is a pic

looking at the set again I guess I should have just put this in the Avengers toys thread

Pretty awesome score!  I'm not crazy about that Desert Mission Cap, but the rest of the set makes up for that.

Also, is there any chance you could give us a closer look at that War Machine in the upper left hand corner?  I'm sure it's from the final wave of the line, but I had never seen that one at all.

Found the electronic lightsaber version of Darth Vader tonight.  It's okay.  Even thought the lightsaber arm is static, the sculpt is far better than the Power FX Darth Vader from the POTF2 days.

These babies look great with my Mando army!

I'm glad to finally have my Mando collection completed. Hopefully Hasbro is kind enough to release the Mandalorian Starfighter at some point, as it would compliment the shuttle nicely.

That's an awesome Death Watch army you've built!  And considering some of the season 5 trailers we've seen, we might have some more Mando's on the way in 2013.

The Original Trilogy / Re: Force lightening
« on: November 15, 2012, 11:00 PM »
Try looking at it this way:  we're all pretty much in agreement that the events of TESB are time compressed. Luke is training on Dagobah with Yoda for at least a few weeks, and at most a few months. We can extrapolate that because the malfunctioning hyperdrive on the Millenium Falcon slows its travel from Hoth to Bespin, and a fairly significant amount of time must have passed.

Contrast those weeks / months of Luke's training with the training time and process for a Jedi in the era of the a galactic Republic. When we saw Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episode I, he's about 25 years old and still a Padawan. He's been training for at least 20 years when he duels Darth Maul. And he's been a Jedi Knight for another 10 years when he faces Dooku. He also had the benefit of seeing Dooku hit Anakin with Force lightning before he deflected the attack at him. Obi-Wan was simply far more experienced and trained for that attack.

So, how does Yoda compress 20 years of Jedi training into the space of a couple of months?
