The Bullpen / Re: The Avengers: The Toys
« on: September 12, 2012, 12:52 PM »
Here's a general question for those collecting the 3.75" scale Marvel movie lines:  are you into having three seperate collections?

Iron Man 2 did this with a Movie Line, a Comic Line, and a Concept Line.

The Avengers line has done this, too.  And seeing all of those stupid Reactron Armor Iron Man Concept figures warming the pegs has gotten to be ridiculous.

The Thor line seems to have done away with the comic line, but still clung to the concept / alternate hero look figures.

And the Captain America line still had three distinct classes of offerings.

I for one have stuck almost exclusively with movie figures from all of these lines.  There have been some select figures from the concept and comic series lines that I've picked up, but those are minimal at best.  Has anyone else been doing the same?

A little bit about the Avengers sequel from director Joss Whedon:

Quote

September 11, 2012 4:59 PM ET
Still riding high on the success of "The Avengers" (currently the third highest grossing movie of all time worldwide), writer-director Joss Whedon is opening up (just a little) about his plans for the sequel.

In the midst of charming the Toronto Film Festival with the premiere of his new low budget Shakespeare adaptation "Much Ado About Nothing" -- starring frequent collaborators Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Nathan Fillion and Sean Maher -- Whedon spoke with Vancouver's 24 Hours about returning to the Marvel universe.

"The creation of the [Avengers] team is not the happy ending," Whedon says in the interview. "It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I'm digging, just twist that knife. And that's exciting for me."

Twisting that knife will have to wait a little while. "The Avengers 2" isn't due until 2015, after we've seen more solo Avenger pics including "Iron Man 3" (due May 3, 2013), "Thor: The Dark World" (Nov. 8, 2013) and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (April 4, 2014). Marvel also has another superhero team project in the works with "Guardians of the Galaxy" due out Aug. 1, 2014.

As to how involved he'll be in his role as a consultant to the many projects in the Avengers' universe, Whedon said he expects his contributions to be minimal: "Very talented people are writing and directing these movies and what I don't want to be is the guy they dread, who's going to come in and say [in a pompous British accent] 'Oh, well I have the power to say change this.' I'm not that."

The Bullpen / Re: Thor: The Toys!
« on: September 12, 2012, 09:55 AM »
YES!  Finally completed my Thor collection by scoring a Deluxe Heimdall!  I wasn't too enthused about going online to find one, but the prices came down and I was able to score one for $25.

Now I have to start wondering what's in store for the line that's got to be in the works for Thor: The Dark World.  A new Fandral has been cast (Zachary Levi of Chuck fame), and there are rumors that Viggo Mortenson may have been added to the cast as Dr Strange.  Plus, Christopher Eccleston has been cast as Malekith.  He, along with Loki, are probably going to be the central villains in this installment.

Also, are we going to see a crossover of figure sculpts from the Avengers line into the lines of characters like Thor and Cap?  Because truth be told, the movie sculpt of Thor from the Avengers line was a lot better than almost all of the Thor figures from the first Thor film.

The Vintage Collection / Re: K-Mart Vintage Ewok/AT-ST Driver 2-Packs
« on: September 11, 2012, 09:09 PM »
I just read at Sir Steves Guide on Facebook that these have been found out at K-Mart stores now.  Anyone here dare step foot in a K-Mart and find one yet?

I saw that too.  I looked through their store reports from the past week  and saw no mentions of the AT-ST Driver or Ewok hijackers 2-packs.  I think the FB post might have been a misunderstanding, wishful thinking or an attempt to drive up traffic on their site.

Plus, I only found 2 in-hand eBay auctions of either 2-pack.  I'm thinking that these might not be due in stores until next month.

I will change it to : Mandolorian Shuttle

I'll second this one. Seems like a solid contender.

If I was gonna go with a longshot choice, I'd say a modern take on the Kenner droid factory.

Scored one of these this morning. And it was a little tricky to find one set where the paint apps on the faces of all three figures looked solid.

The Avengers line has certainly been released with a degree of hesitancy by Hasbro.  The spacing of the waves with Black Widow and Hawkeye, and now Nick Fury and the Chitauri ahas been a little frustrating.

Hasbro seems to have learned some lessons from the Iron Man 2 line.  That seems to have carried forward into how they released both the Thor and Captain America movie lines.  Iron Man 2's toy line was a big release and it dominated toy shelves for a while.  A lot of that stock sold through, but it took a while.  And then the transition over to the follow-on line that's now in clearance outlets was an over stretch.  It seems reasonable that Hasbro would adjust on the Thor and Captain American lines and dial down the quantity of products.

Hasbro did go bigger with Avengers than either the Cap or Thor lines, but they still seem to be stuck in the same rut:  releasing too many versions of the main characters and almost no villains until much later in the line's run.  I understand the potential for spoilers from some figures, and a movie studio's hesitance to reveal characters.  But this does seem to be holding the line back a bit.

"A Clash of Kings" by George R R Martin.  Just finished "A Game of Thrones" a week ago.  I have yet to see the series, so I'm happy about that.

The books and the television series have definitely been divergent of one another.  That was more apparent with season 2.  I'm wondering if the next couple of seasons of the HBO series will be more true to the books, since they're going to be stretching book 3 into two seasons of the tv show.

Looking at those first couple of waves of the DROID FACTORY line, I definitely feel like I SHOULD be selective.  The definite buys for me?

Wave 1
- Arena Padme (It's about time!) BUY
- Rockets R2  (Gotta wait and see if this is any kind of improvement over the 2007 release)
- Ep2 Anakin  BUY
- Ep2 Clone SGT (Meh.  Is this a removable helmet version?)
- Geonosian Warrior (Meh)
- Luminara  (Looks like a definite improvement over the ROTS version) BUY
- Biker Scout (Is this the same as the Speeder Bike pack-in?)
- TIE Pilot  BUY
- RED Battle Droid (Meh)
- Sandtrooper (Black Pauldron)  (Meh.  How many Sandtroopers does one person need?)
- Pablo Jill  BUY
- 212th Clone (Again? Meh)

BADs = TC-70 & FA-4

Wave 2
Mace Windu Clone Wars Armor  BUY
Captain Rex  BUY
Luke Yavin Ceremony (Significant improvement over the 30AC version) BUY
Mara Jade Jedi  BUY
Darth Vader Bespin  BUY
A-Wing Pilot  BUY
Biggs Darklighter  (Significant improvement over the 30AC version) BUY
Ep 2 Clone Pilot (Meh)

The only incentive that I can see for buying all of the figures are the BAF droid parts.  Otherwise I'd definitely be cherry picking figures from these assortments.

The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Re: Recent Clone Wars Finds/Purchases
« on: September 2, 2012, 02:13 PM »
The fact they're repainting it for next year tells me no, but that's just my opinion.  I think it's destined to only be overseas or imported by the few willing to pay out for it.

EE has a single case/assortment with the Republic Dropship.  I may just bite the bullet and get that.

I'd like to see a Snowtrooper with electronic E-Web cannon

If they could integrate it with the power pack for the E-Web, it would be awesome!  But I think that what's holding Hasbro back from doing some really cool electronic features are the child safety standards & the cost.
