Why the Ancient One is a white woman...

The Tibet v/s China angle didn't even occur to me.  It's crazy the stuff they need to consider to keep from financial catastrophe.

Where was Tristane when he got killed? Still on the boat? In King's Landing? I guess the Sand Snakes had a fast ship? (And could I love those three girls anymore?!?!)

His room in Dorne.  He didn't get on the boat bound for King's Landing.

I hope they don't draw out the Jon Snow resolution for too long.  In the book...

[SPOILERS... sort of], Jon's last word as he was stabbed was "Ghost", so as a warg I figured he sent his soul into Ghost before he died.  I'm thinking that's the case in the show as well - and that he'll go back into his body after he's resurrected, either by Melisandre or as a White Walker.

And I think a lot of that has to do with the self medicating a lot of the wrestlers are doing, along with the lack of any sort of substance abuse testing programs.

That's because it's not a sport - it's acting.  Broadway and Hollywood don't typically have substance abuse testing programs either.

Are Asians really offended by an Asian-monk character in a movie?  I'm not trying to be flippant - I'd really like to know what different groups actually find offensive.

I'll defer to Disney, whom I sure has a stack of research 4 feet tall on the subject.  But you have to understand they're dealing with source material that was pretty offensive...

So might Asians be offended to be cast as the token wise monk?  Possibly.  Even if that monk is a cool character.

Yeah, but if you're playing that game, how do you justify taking one of the few prominent Asian roles in the MU and re-casting with an impossibly WASPY white woman like Tilda Swinton? If the idea is to champion diversity, why replace a non-white actor with a white one? That just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not sure if this was a business decision or an artistic one.  On the one hand, Tilda Swinton is an Oscar-winner that just about any director would kill to work with.  But on the business side - one thing Marvel has been openly cautious about is casting Asians in stereotypical/racist Asian roles.  There's legitimate beef with how Marvel portrayed Asians back in the 1960s and 1970s.  And that's why The Mandarin wasn't played by an Asian guy.  Marvel very may have concluded that Asian audiences would rather see a white or Indian person cast in a formerly racist Asian role than someone who is actually Asian.  That might be more agreeable than seeing an Asian in the token wise monk role in an otherwise mostly-white cast.

Looks cool but it seems to me if you are going to film an origin story about Dr Strange you would at least need the Ancient One and Baron Mordo. If they can't even be bothered to cast those roles properly, why even bother to make Strange a middle aged white dude?

It is tiresome.  And it's been explained.  These characters were invented back when racism made diversity impossible.  Disney/Marvel is using this opportunity to correct that error.  They also hope to appeal to a wider, diverse audience for better financial success.  So when the opportunity presents itself to cast someone as something other than a white male, they take it.

Strange, Stark, Thor - those characters are iconic.  Casting against ethnicity doesn't fly as well in those cases (see Johnny Storm in Fan4astic).  So you pick your battles.

If Mordo being black gets your panties in a bunch, I feel kinda bad for you.

Looks pretty wild.  Can anyone tell if it's Cumberbach saying the line about not believing in fairy tales?  It'd be a crime if they made him drop his British accent for the role.  But then he sounds normal British when he says "Why are you doing this?"...

Gonna get a lot of Matrix/Inception griping, I think.

I'd heard Gotham = NYC and Metropolis is Chicago or midwest.

That's what I used to think as well.  But either that's been retconned, or we were mistaken.

What's more confusing is that Metropolis was clearly NYC in the Donner films.

Why are Gotham City and Metropolis so close to each other?

I think they're like Manhattan and Jersey.

According to this, Gotham is in Jersey, and Metropolis is in Delaware - which is HILARIOUS.

I'll fill next week with the finale of Vinyl, then it's Game of Thrones in all its glory until summer.

I'm not watching.  Season 1 was dreadful.

In many of the reviews I read, the reviewers earnestly expressed the hope that they'd love the film.  Some of these guys are huge comic book geeks.  I myself wished it was a great film.  So I don't buy the story that critics went in with an eye towards trashing the film.  I think that's something DC fanboys are trying to push as an excuse - that their good film was sabotaged by dishonest reviews.  29% on Rotten Tomatoes contradicts that.

238
So... you didn't see it, but still feel comfortable making the statement that it was badly written and badly edited?  Okay.

Nope - I was pretty clear in my message.  MoS was badly written based on my personal experience.  And the vast majority of critics said BvS was badly written and edited.  I made no personal determination about BvS.  But thanks for being a dick about it.

239
I don't think it's bias.  I think it's because the movie is badly written and badly edited.  Man of Steel was badly written.  Not only was it untrue to the character (admittedly subjective), it had glaring logic gaps (completely objective).  And from the reviews I read of BvS, that movie was even worse in that regard.

But how do you recon "pregnant girl gets sick"?  And set up appropriate roadblocks 20 miles away?  What's the effective range of a walkie-talkie?  Looked it up - in a forested area it's 1/2 to 2 miles.  So they'd need a chain of 40 guys just to relay data back to the first roadblock to let them know to abduct the X-marks-the-spot dude and get him ready.

Then there's the log blockade.  They'd have 2-3 hours to set that up once they got word the RV was moving.  That's assuming a very cautious RV driving speed, which may or may not be realistic.  Even with heavy equipment, stacking that many longs is going to take an entire day.  I suppose we could assume they blocked that route ahead of time, anticipating the confrontation.

It's just borderline preposterous.  All of it.
