Title: what's your favorite scary movie?
Post by: jokabofe on July 31, 2004, 03:11 PM
anyone who looks at my dvd collection (http://www.intervocative.com/dvdcollection.aspx/jokabofe) will be able to see that i'm a hardcore horror junkie. i like all kinds of horror films, from the golden age classics like frankenstein, dracula, and the wolfman, to the silver age films like american werewolf in london, halloween, friday the 13th, etc. i'm a fan of just about every sub-genre of horror - slashers, monsters, aliens, mutants, zombies, vampires... it doesn't matter.

for more modern horror, i've been turning to the japanese market for the past several years, as all the good stuff seems to come from there. the ju-on series (soon to be re-made for an american audience, starring sarah michelle gellar - ugh),  ringu (not that p.o.s. re-made for america), the tomie series... i could go on and on.

but if i had to narrow it down to one film, one single film that scared the bejesus out of me so bad that i'll never forget it, it would have to be the exorcist. i remember seeing it when i was fairly young one night when the parents weren't home, and being completely freaked out. i was about 6 or so, and the images have stayed with me since. of course, i've seen it again and again since then as well, but i'll always remember the first time.

even if you're not a fan of the horror genre, you have to have a favorite scary movie... what is it?

I rented Poltergeist when it came out, took it over to my friends place to watch & during one quiet time in the movie we all looked at the coo-coo clock on the wall. The ticking got to us & we had to stop the clock.

Ever since that movie, I hate clowns with teeth & that backyard tree drove me nuts!

When Alien was released, the theater has stern warnings about the it being scary & the gore. After the Alien chest bursting scene, I had to take a leak real bad & there were people in the lobby having a smoke & just shaking.

I shook my head & I was laughing inside, I thought that scene was pretty cool.  ;D

I can't agree with you more that all the good stuff seems to be coming from Japan nowadays.  I've only recently gotten into that stuff and have only see a few like Audition, Ju-on, and The Eye - but my friend is letting me borrow his slowly but surely - I just don't have an all region player yet.

Modern?  Well, there are a million, but the Shining was always one of my favorites...

Good topic.  I'm a big fan of the horror/suspense genre.  My all-time favorite scary movie is Halloween.  I snuck into the theater (with my sister) and watched it its opening weekend when I was a kid.  The downside to that experience is that I had nightmares for two weeks.   :-[

Exorcist and Exorcist III are great, too.  I'm not really a fan of older horror movies (especially if they're black & white), but there's a few exceptions (The Creature From the Black Lagoon, Nosferatu, and The Fly).

now, which of the ju-on films have you seen. there are 4 altogether, and every one of them is great. from what i understand, there were two made for tv films, and then they were re-made for theatrical release over there. i've seen all 4, and there are some similarities, but it's not like a direct remake. i would check out all 4.

they also just released the sequel to the eye as well, check that one out. more of a "rosemary's baby" type film, where the main character is preganant while trying to commit suicide, and that near death experience enables her to see the ghosts of the dead. pretty good film.

audition is another great film. you can't go wrong with anything by takashi miike.

picking up an all region player was the best thing i ever did. you can get one pretty cheap nowadays - mine was only $50. it'll probably be broken in a matter of weeks, but for $50 who cares, i'll buy another. and alot of these films are now being released here in a region 1 or even region 0 format, so really having an all region player isn't that essential anymore. not to mention that there are plenty of places that you can find some of these unreleased movies online for free.

you can most likely find some of the more "mainstream" ones at blockbuster of all places. they have films like "cure", "audition", "st. john's wort", and just about all of the "tomie" series of films at my local bb. check out the tomie series as well - those are pretty good.

yeah, and the new exorcist flick looks like it should be pretty good as well.

I believe it was the first one, it was definitely one of the ones that was originally made for TV and is also the one that is about to be re-released in America soon.

The next Japanese films on my list are Ichi the Killer, Versus, and the two Battle Royale movies which I've got no excuse for not having seen yet.

My buddy says that the Tomie stuff is no good - I was about to just pick one up for kicks at best buy a few weeks ago and he insisted that I not waste my money.

And Force Guy - Halloween is my favorite of all of the American killer genre films (Freddy, Jason, etc...)  Still waiting for the DVD Boxed set....

hey kbz - check out this site (http://www.midnighteye.com/) for some great reviews of japanese films. it doesn't just stick to horror, it pretty much reviews japanese cinema in general, but a lot of it is horror. great site.

there's also a pretty cool interview with takashi shimizu - the director of the ju-on films - where he talks a little about the originals and some about the remake. check it out here (http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2538328?htv=12&htv=12). it's a video btw.

Thanks for those links - I'm going to check them out tomorrow.  One of the things I really need to get into Japanese horror (and film in general) a little more is a few websites that have good information on what's worth seeing and what's crap.  Then I have to figure out where to get the stuff without it costing 30 or 40$ per dvd.

Man, I gotta go with The Exorcist with a nod to the movie where Kathy Bates had a nude scene

Demonic possession is sort of freaky and they pulled it off smashingly, sort of interested to see how that Prequel turns out

recently i've found quite a few ebay auctions for some of these japanese "imports", shall we say, for $10 - $12 or less. i've dealt with a few different dealers, i can give you the screen names/id's if you want. great service, reasonable shipping charges (one of my pet peeves is when people sell you stuff cheap on ebay and then gouge you on shipping. last year i bought  4 dvd's off a guy who charged me $16 for shipping. and when the package arrived? $2.25 stamp on a padded envelope. that motherfu.... ).

there are plenty of sites that review/preview horror titles. i'll get some links together for you tomorrow.

That would be great.  Thanks!

OCB, I heard the other day that the new Exorcist got an NC-17 rating - word is also that they are going to try to edit it for the theatrical release to try to get it down to R.

Which means, once again - we've got to wait for the DVD before we'll know (assuming this is true).  Either way, the trailers definitely look like it might be good.

I like to think some of the old horror movies are making a comeback in a better way...after the debacle of Jason X and a million other crappy recent horror movies like it, I thought they did a much better job with the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre and even Freddy vs. Jason was better than I expected.  I'm hoping this continues with the new Exorcist - I think they're starting to realize there's a huge market for well done horror movies - even if they're remakes or prequels or what not, but that the crappy ones will always flop.  Of course, up next, Seed of Chucky - which I have low expectations for.

We've been watching the trailers for this a lot at work - looks like it has the potential to be really good.  Anyone see these yet?  There's a trailer in the site somewhere:

Saw:  The Movie (http://www.howfuckedup.net/)

You have to click the red dots and other things to actually FIND the trailer in there...

Speaking of the new Exorcist.  Whats the deal with the supposed first prequel version filmed?  Are they going to release?  Wait til the new prequel is released on DVD.  Am interested to see why it was canned.  Since it was scrapped you would think they would try to capitalize on the direct to video thing.  Or are there some kind of legal obstacles?

Back on topic.  I give nods to the Exorcist as still being frightening.  When I was younger I could pick dozens that would scare the piss out of me.  But, with all the violence nowadays, society becomes numb.

THe one that is being released is a prequel.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but what I thought happened was that the film was made, in its entirety, but there was some type of conflict and the film was reshot - the exact same film - with a different director.  Both versions will end up on DVD eventually.

Or so I heard...

and i forgot - on the bloody disgusting site, there is a review for a new flick called haute tension - a slasher flick out of france. it is being re-named switchblade romance for uk distribution, and i don't think it is being released in america just yet. but if you can find a copy, watch it. it's one of the best horror flicks - and the best slasher flick - i've seen in a long, long time. seriously.

Question for everyone - especially Jokabofe.

I just bought Ichi the Killer at Best Buy - it's rated R and is 117 minutes long.

Is this an edited version of the actual film?  Does anyone know the run-time on the Japanese release???

Any help would be appreciated it - I'm holding off on opening it until I know so I can return it if it's edited down.

Thanks.

After a quick google...I found a site saying that they were selling one that was 129 minutes...which is longer - which suggests mine was edited.  But, the 129 minute one was still only rated R - so I'm still not quite sure.

It's looking like I'll have to return this one though...

yeah, they have made a few different versions/edits of that film. i do believe there is an unedited version, but it's only in region 2/pal format as far as i know. there's a website called diabolik dvd (http://cweb2.millenianet.com/cgi-bin/ccdbdis.pl?merchant=diabolik01&action=item&ItemID=ichithekillerpaldutch&inum=13&Category=Takashi%20Miike) that has copies, but you'll need a region free dvd player to check it out.

actually, i just took a look at my copy of ichi (which claims to be "uncut"), and according to the back it says "run time: 93 minutes" which would put it at 1 hour and 33 minutes. so who knows. this is an "unofficial copy" that i picked up a few years ago at a toy show in nyc.

As sad as it is...
The scariest movie I've ever seen was Jaws.

As a kid, I didn't go swimming for MONTHS after I saw that thing.

Lots of movies have "freaked" me out, "grossed" me out, "weirded" me out, but nothing, and I mean NOTHING ever flat out "scared" me like that movie did.

don't feel bad about that jeff... jaws is actually second on my list. again, seeing at an early age had some really bad effects on me. nightmares for months. not wanting to go in the water, even at the local swimming pool.

if you liked jaws, and found it scary, check out open water. it's another shark movie, but this time instead of 1 big mechanical shark, the divers are harassed by about 30 smaller - and real - sharks. good movie.

just finished watching another great japanese horror flick called dark water. as with most of the current horror films coming from the far east, it's a ghost story. i wonder why so many of the recent films from that area are all centering on ghost stories, which is a subject that american films just kinda forgot all about? and the weird thing is, most of these films always use a child ghost. strange. and in a way, it's kinda like watching the same movie, over and over again - but it's not. not sure if that statement makes any sense to anyone besides myself. but i know what i mean.

So Dark Water is good eh?  I'll have to check it out.  I've seen it in the store so many times and the cover looks great - but it's always so hit or miss with these movies that I was afraid to pick it up just based on the cover.

One more note on the Ichi the Killer dvd I picked up - here's the cover:

My internet research has led me to believe that there are two releases (U.S. releases anyway) with this exact cover, the Rated-R version, which I have - and an uncut, unrated version, which is pictured above - which I'm going to have to try to find somewhere and see about an exchange.
Title: Re: what's your favorite scary movie?
Post by: jokabofe on September 1, 2004, 06:08 PM
okay, some new info (or old, depending) on ichi the killer in all it's various forms. i've now got three (yes, 3) versions on dvd. the first of which is an "import"  ;) that clocks in at 93 minutes, the second clocks in at 117 minutes, and the third one clocks in at 129 minutes. i'm under the assumption that the 129 minute version is the fully uncut one. and it's damn good.

on another note, i just finished watching one of the newest films from takashi miike, the director of ichi the killer (they are calling him the japanese quentin tarantino, thanks to the enormous amounts of blood he likes to use in his films. and his films only deal with two subjects - horror and the yakuza. but thankfully, he's a little more prolific than tarantino - he's made 3 movies this year, 5 movies last year, 7 in 2002, and 7 in 2001) - one missed call. actually, it was made last year (2003) but i don't think it has any distribution in the u.s. yet.

like all the recent great japanese horror films, this one is a ghost story. it involves a group of teenagers who receive phone calls on their cellphones - from themselves. it seems they are calling from the future at their exact moment of death, which is usually a day or two from the time they receive the call. but the call shows up with their own name, number - and the day and time, so now they know when they will die. if you like ring, ju-on, or any of the other recent japanese horror masterpieces, check this one out.

Title: Favorite Horror Flicks?
Post by: Reid on August 25, 2007, 04:09 PM
What are yours? As for me, here are some of my current favorites...

The Shining- Scariest film ever, no question about it. I could spend all day talking about the creepy and disturbing images in that movie. Even after five viewings, one scene that still gives creeps me out is the "bear suit" scene. Thing ******* comes out of nowhere and sends a chill down my spine everytime.

Night Of The Living Dead- Definitive zombie flick. The ending is almost beautifully tragic in a way, and also disturbing. I recently purchased the re-colored DVD at Best Buy, but I still prefer watching it in B&W for some reason.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre- While Psycho invented the slasher genre, TCM would invent the whole "masked killer" concept that would become a staple of the genre. Fantastic film, and the abrupt ending really leaves you guessing.

Also, what is the absolute worst horror film you've ever seen?

Way Of The Vampire- This was just absolutely painful. To give you an idea of its wretchedness, this is a direct-to-DVD film the Sci-Fi Channel plays on rotation. I still find it hard to believe I wasted two hours watching this piece of trash.

A Nightmare on Elmstreet deserves an honorable mention.

Jaws flat out scared me when I was a kid -- we made the mistake of seeing it just before we went to Nags Head for two weeks.  Not only have I not been in the Atlantic Ocean since, I wouldn't go in the deep end of the pool for the rest of the summer.  I'll only go into water that I can see my feet in.

Poltergeist still wigs me out -- I have always been afraid of clowns and that nearly sent me over the edge.  I was in San Diego for the summer and flew up to San Francisco to visit a friend.  When he took me to the airport we were on a people mover and half way across it he freaked out and started running.  When I caught up to to him he was sitting on the floor in a cold sweat.  He said that he felt like he was in the scene where the mom was in the hallway and it kept stretching out and he panicked.

Halloween -- while one of my all time favorite scary movies -- pretty much put an end to my babysitting career.

The Excorcist and Poltergeist are some of the first horror/scary movies I saw as a kid so they still hold a "special" place in my heart.  Halloween and Nightmare on Elmstreet came up next.  Yes I was allowed to watch horror movies at a very young age and I turned out fine - I think.  My favorite has to go to Hellraiser though.....I just loved the box and Pinhead's gang....good stuff.  At least 1-3.  Hellbound being my favorite with the "good doctor"

I wish this franchise could be revived with less sucky sequels  ::)
