I was looking at that last night.  I'm interested to see what's in the Delta Vehicle assortment.  And it looks like it's going to be heavy on the role play and not as many whacky scales and new lines.  Basic action figures and vehicles, whatever the 10" Battle-Kata Battlers are and then role play.  Nice and manageable and not blown out like 2009 was.

I can't wait to see the figures.  If nothing else, I'm buying the Rock Roadblock figure the second I see it on the pegs!

Looks much more scaled back from ROC, which is good. I'm curious about Alphas this time around.

I figure all the really neat stuff will be exclusives, like it was with ROC. Can't wait for Toy Fair to see what Hasbro has to offer.  :)

I was wondering about exclusives.  I know that Hasbro is cutting back on Star Wars exclusives this year and was wondering if that's a new corporate strategy or if it was just for that line.

With Phantom Menace, Joe, Avengers and Spider-Man all hitting this year (and assuming no Ghost Rider toys) I'm really wondering how it's all going to be managed.  If anything will fall out due to the amount of aisle space those lines are going to take up.  I could see fewer exclusives all around just so that stores will have the room to fit the wide release stuff.

Still, I'm more excited to see the Joe stuff for 2012 than I am Star Wars.

First look at the new movie toys

http://www.usatoday.com/life/comics/story/2012-02-01/GI-Joe-Retaliation-movie-toys/52918456/1

Other than the Halo helmet, I'm kind of digging the Joe Trooper

Joe Trooper would easily be my fav as a kid, envisioning myself as one of them under that bucket.  Actually I am impressed with them all.  Much more of a 1980's feel than I expected. Maybe this movie will be actually really cool?  I have a little hpoe now after seeing that Cobra Trooper and Commander.

Duke is as lame as ever though.  Cool Star Wars bounty hunter rifle he has there though.  That'll be nice when he hits clearance.

Those figures actually don't look too bad.  Between these and the trailer, I'm cautiously optimistic about the moviet his summer.  Definitely like the look of CC and the troops better.  I had planned, outside of Snake Eyes, on passing on this line - but these do look kind of neat.

More new Retaliation (http://www.hasbro.com/gijoe/en_US/retaliation.cfm) toys revealed today.

And I'm PISSED! They're releasing Jinx as an SDCC exclusive!  I still don't have last year's Zarana and now it's looking like I'll probably miss out on Jinx also.  Oh, and there is way too much "ninja" in this line.

I was pretty excited for this line but right now I'm just so angry over Jinx that I'm not even interested in it anymore.

Liking everything I'm seeing so far as far as the figures...vehicles are a meh...  As far as SDCC Joes?  Outside of Zarana who I got from JD I have to face the fact I'll never own the rest.  No biggie, but a piss off to say the least.

Weird colors on a lot of the toys, and those motorcycles are extremely lame. As for Jinx, I'm hoping they'll have quantities similar to the ROC Destro from a few years back. At least the ARAH costume appears to be the normal figure and not the variant. I'm not sure if I want the Jinx figures but hopefully everyone who does want them can get them for a decent price.

Great. Another SDCC exclusive I'll have to pay $40 to acquire. And those vehicles are junk, though I'm glad to get another chance at the hiss scout and cycle armor.

But the rest of the stuff looks great.
Title: Re: GI Joe Retaliation - The Toys!
Post by: efranks on February 3, 2012, 04:24 PM
I don't get Hasbro's fascination with motorcycles.  Anyone remember Star Wars Customs?

Maybe it was more in the animation somewhere, but I don't remember when Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow became associated with them.  But Hasbro, in general, seems to love them, look at the Spider-Man and Lizard pics that leaked.  Seems that all the Marvel movie lines have come with some type of motorcycle or 4-wheeler and they're back again for this film.

I like the looks of the Combat Cruiser and Ghost Hawk II, the Tread Ripper may not be that bad and, while it's not necessarily my thing, the Water Moccasin (don't think I can call it the FangBoat with a straight face) in Cobra color isn't terrible.

Not sure what's up with the GI Joe Trooper w/ the Cobra gear unless it's a Spy Troops type thing.  The Trooper photo that USAToday posted looked excellent so I'm not sure what's up with this.

And then, Jinx.  She's on my top 10 list of characters I wanted to see updated and now to have her at SDCC?  Knowing that HTS.com, if they sell after the show, will probably have learned nothing from last year's fiasco just makes my blood boil.

I'm hoping they'll have a ton of them, like they did for the ROC Destro. But the speculators will still drive the price up anyway like they did with Zarana.

Also, I was thinking. Jinx's name is Kim Arashikage, and Storm Shadow's name in the comics is Tommy Arashikage. Siblings?

Did anybody notice the loss of articulation in the line?

No ankles for Cobra Commander

No elbows for the vehicle drivers.
Title: Re: GI Joe Retaliation - The Toys!
Post by: efranks on February 3, 2012, 07:33 PM
The vehicle drivers are T-crotch, non-articulated placeholders.

Hasbro has said they're pulling articulation and now we have proof.  It's a bad deal all around.  Not every figure is losing articulation, the new GI Joe Trooper and some others have a new ankle joint, but in general, yeah, big loss of articulation.  One thing that sucks, I haven't seen any ankle articulation on any of the Roadblock figs yet.  I'm also worred about wrists now too.  Those are harder to tell.

I need more time to get past what we're losing vs what we're getting.  I'm just angry right now.

I'd really hate to think they sacrificed articulation for those gimmicky launchers to keep the price at $9 (which I noticed Joes cost at Target now) but it appears they did. Damn it. I had a big bag of those missile launchers I threw in recycling from ROC, and I really didn't want to do it again, though I'll buy these anyway.
Title: Re: GI Joe Retaliation - The Toys!
Post by: Jesse James on February 5, 2012, 03:18 PM
Wow, the articulation thing slipped right by me...  THAT is something to REALLY be pissed over...  The price sucks and now the poseability too?  That was all that made me, as a kid, buy GI Joes.  I wanted more fun figures, and they quickly replaced Star Wars as my favorites because they were poseable.

That's really some bull****.  Especially with them owning the license and reusing parts as much as they do with GI Joe.  That sucks and makes it easy to pass on some guys.

I think losing ankle articulation isn't the end of the world, if youg et a price drop to go with it.  You should never lose the elbow, shoulder, knee, and hip joints though.  That's what makes the line's figures good.

I'm going to nab the Cobra trooper (a functional parachute?  Awesome), and the Joe trooper I think, and then call it a day I believe.  Unless they make an awesome flint or something.  I always liked Flint and didn't like his 25th figure with the goofy forearm joint.

Zartan's also a maybe.

I'm really bummed to hear about the driver articulation though.  That's a nutpunch.
Title: Re: GI Joe Retaliation - The Toys!
Post by: efranks on February 5, 2012, 03:38 PM
I don't know if they sacrificed articulation in favor of the spring loaded guns, they didn't for RoC, and Hasbro has usually said the pack-ins and accessories don't impact the price of the figures.  This is just going to be a trend on all their lines, I believe, and we'll probably have to get used to it.

One of my main questions is, how will this impact repacks?  Since a major investment, sculpting and tooling, will already be taken care of, I'd hope that we'd still see plenty of classic characters and kitbashes using the existing library.  But will we see fewer overall releases per year of that type of figure?

Post by: Greg on February 5, 2012, 06:33 PM
I'm probably an outsider with this, but I don't care about missing ankle articulation. In the case of Cobra Commander, it greatly improves the look of the sculpted boot. I don't mind ball jointed knees instead of double hinged knees. Both styles of articulation accomplish the same goal, and both have some minor tradeoffs. I also don't mind swivel wrists instead of ball jointed wrists, despite the ball joint wrists being much better. If there is any lesson that the Joe line can learn from Star Wars, it's that not every character needs super duper articulation. As long as "the essentials" (ball joint neck, shoulders, elbows, hips; movement at waist/torso, wrists, and knees) are covered I don't see any reason to complain. That being said...

The vehicle drivers are absolute bull****. It's a total slap in the face to collectors and kids. A great part about the Joe vehicles was getting a normal figure included, even if it was just a cobbled together "frankenJoe." The new statues won't even fit in with normal Joe figures. No vehicle drivers would have been better than the **** we're getting. It's even more aggravating that such cool designs (Clutch and VAMP Driver in particular) are being wasted with only five POAs... total BS.

People may be jumping the gun on the lack of articulation. Those photos are always doctored up.

But if there is less articulation. I don't understand. Is it really cheaper to tool up new molds with limited articulation than to recolor an existing one with articulation? I doubt most if any of the larger vehicle drivers are in the film.  GI JOE's Hasbro's brand and they don't have to pay licensing compared to Marvel or Star Wars, unless the film likenesses are a factor. Plus they rehash vehicle molds, too.

GI JOE's legacy was the moveable fighting man, and whenever they've reduced articulation, the line has sucked and sucked hard (Extreme, the first Gi JOE Vs. Cobra figures in 2002, those little sigma six 2.5" things).

Where is everyone getting that these are less articulated? Most of the pictures are too small to even tell, and the basic figures look like they've got all the standard points, except ankles in a few cases where shin guards would limit it anyway.

Ouch, I am by no means an articulation junkie, I can live without stuff like ankles and double knees, but yeah, the vehicle drivers are a bit much. It's a move I'd expect from a company like Mattel, not Hasbro. Seems they're cutting corners on all thier movie lines lately, the Transformers movie line seems to have shrunk and is 80% repaints now, Avengers lost POA's and now even Joe. If I were to theorize, I'd wager it's because they've taken hits on thier past movie lines, putting a bunch of money into fully articulated figures only for most of them to wind up on clearance. We'll have to wait and see if it affects the non movie line offerings that follow. Lets hope not, Joe is one of the few lines left that actually gives you pack in figs with the vehicles. They're the only reason I bothered with some of them.

That's their own damn fault. They released an huge Iron Man 2 onslaught of NOTHING BUT IRON MAN!  Where the **** were the villains?  Thor?  Same thing.  Captain America?  They at least had Red Skull out early, but he was so incredibly short packed that they may as well never have released him.

If Hasbro would put more thought into a balanced launch for these films they'd only help themselves in drawing in buyers.  If I could walk into a store on release day for a movie line like Avengers and walk out with the whole Avengers team and a Loki figure I'd be more inclined to buy in.  But going in and finding pegs full of Thor, Captain America and Iron Man after having just seen nearly an entire aisle (at Target) full of the same figures for the last 11 months, I'm not going to be interested.

Even parents that don't know who all the characters are aren't stupid enough that they don't recognize that they've seen basically the same three characters (Cap, Thor, IM) in stores when they did their Christmas shopping, last year's birthdays and other random toy aisle shopping.  Why would they suddenly want those characters when they've been turning Junior down for 2 years on some of them?  As a collector I'm less inclined to buy in because I know that even if I invest in the big three, history tells me Im unlikely to be able to complete my Avengers main team.  So why bother?

I don't know what market research Hasbro is looking at when they pick their wave mixes, but I can pick the ****** case of Star Wars releases as soon as they're posted on EE.com.  And I'm usually right.  I looked at the CA and Thor releases last year and knew on day one that I'd never see anything but those initial releases locally.  And I was right.  I barely saw anything beyond wave 1 CA and only out of town.  I saw exactly 1 Thor figure that wasn't from wave 1, only once, and at a Target I rarely get to.  The only figure from either line I bought was a Thor, at KMart, on store closing clearance.  I paid under $1 for him and that was a stretch, I almost left it out of pure spite.

When you can't find the main movie villain in stores = failure.

But hey, lots of Iron Man, Thors, Winter Soldiers and USAgents out there.

Hasbro controls too much of the action figure market and they've gotten to the point of half-assing it because they can get away with it.

Couldn't agree more with the sentiment that Hasbro has jackasses running the show half the time when it comes to the selection of figures to put in cases.  They do their retail partners a huge disservice when they pull that ****.

I guess I haven't been paying too much attention to this thread, but 5 points of articulation on some figs?  Wow...looks like those will be tossed if I do decide to buy any vehicles.  Major step backwards.  Look at the toys from the 80's.  Seriously?  I always enjoyed the vehicle drivers since they were unique, but I'd rather they just ditch the figure and put more money into the vehicles if they're going this route from now on.

I think it's hysterical that GI JOE can make Roadblock a "ninja commando" and leader of the team (or what's left of it).

The word is that the articulation reduction is necessary for costs and it is cheaper to make a new five point articulated figure than to pay extra cost assembly for a reissue or some corporate spew...maybe...why included drivers? They must be necessary for value perception...but then most Star Wars vehicles are figureless. And the new Retaliation packages don't even display the figure in a little window, either.

Word is the heads of the drivers can probably fit on good figures.

Title: Re: GI Joe Retaliation - The Toys!
Post by: efranks on February 13, 2012, 04:50 AM
Yep, they used the costing line when speaking about the pack-in figures.  On the plus side, the detail on them is still pretty good, just no articulation.  They'll probably look fine in the actual vehicles or standing on the shelf, but may not have much playability to them.

I'd rather not have a figure, personally, than get these.  But, I can see why they want them in the package to help sell them.  And if going with 5 PoA to keep the price down, that's fine with me.  They even admitted that they maybe didn't price the RoC line well and this line is less aggressive and should be better priced.

And, yeah, they're way off the reservation on the ninja content of this line.  If kids need that and it sells figures, I'll live with it, especially if it gets me my Blind Master and Kim Arashikage in wave 4...and Joe Colton in W3.

Yeah, that packaging is terrible and I'm not one that really ever cares about that sort of thing.  But even the RoC packaging was slightly better.  The recent packaging for the PoC/30th/Renegades was awesome and I expected something more like that.  I can see them going to a bigger bubble for accessories, but they were able to pack a lot in with the current card so, I don't know what they were thinking.

But that looks like something designed by a fan that got their hands on the first two promo photos released on the Internet.  The guy that got paid for that design should be ashamed of himself.

If you guys haven't already seen the news, the first wave of Retaliation figures were found at a Meijer store in Fort Wayne Indiana last night.  Best news; the figures were only $6.97.  If that price carries over to Walmart and Target I'll be extremely happy.  It was troublesome that the current Renegades/30th figures bumped to $10.99 at Target and it still has me a little worried about the Retaliation figures, but this news is a little bit of relief.

Especially how Hasbro actually admitted in 2009 that they thought the RoC figures would have done better at a lower price.

About half of that first wave will be a pass for me but I'm really interested in the GI Joe Trooper, Cobra Trooper w/ parachute and the Red Ninja.  Zartan is a possibility and while I do want a Rock as Roadblock figure, I don't know if that wave 1 version will be the best choice.

I like that line way better than what they showed off for Retaliation.  If the price stays affordable, not all $1 stores sell everything for $1, I can see picking up a bunch of the Cobra Trooper and the Green Shirt.  I don't know if he's supposed to be a specific character, maybe Grunt (?), but a couple head swaps and he'd easily fill out the ranks.

I like those a lot...

For the most part, dollar stores are still cheap with their toys, so I'd probably be in on those.  I'd love to see STar Wars get a similar treatment in the dollar store aisles, haha.  Not likely to ever happen since it's an outside license and all, but it'd be neat to see kitbashes and stuff for older army builders, to make a quick extra couple bucks.

See these lil guys?  These are repacked 3" TF Legend size figures and they're also showing up at "dollar" stores, but they're asking $6 a piece for them.  Dollar General in this case...Not my find or pic, but copied from tfw.  Wouldn't mind picking up some of these new Joes for $1 but I don't think so - if I ever even see them.  Still....$6 is better then $10.99

Back in 2004/2005 I drove to every Dollar General and CVS I could find to buy the single carded Valor vs Venom packs that Hasbro released.  I want to say they were like $2.99 or $3.99 back then and while the sculpts look kind of crappy by today's standards, they were really some of the top end figures back then.  The BAT figures and a couple others, Iron Grenadiers, maybe the Tele-Viper, still kind of hold up today.

If we're looking at $8.99 at Target for Retaliation figures and these things hit the Dollar stores (I'm guessing Dollar General because that's who Hasbro has partnered with before) for $5.99/$6 I'd be more than happy.  If they're more...I'll still get at least Shipwreck and the Green Shirt.  Possibly also get Storm Shadow (used as a generic ninja) and Snake Eyes but will probably pass on the rest.  CC isn't bad but I'd probably only buy the Cobra Trooper if I could army build about 6 or 8 of him.

Nerdrage Toys just posted the Retaliation figures for pre-order.  He's asking $10 each or a set of Wave 1 for $85.50 ($9.50 per).  He said on Twitter that was the good news, bad news was that "Hasbro raised the price."  So, I guess the $8.99 price found in the Target computers is probably going to be about right.

After Hasbro acknowledged their RoC line was probably too expensive, I was hoping they'd pull back for this movie.  They cut articulation, accessories and went with a cheap card back style (no individual art or file cards) so it seems like $9 per is kind of steep.  That's Star Wars pricing, not an in-house brand pricing, during a movie year.

I remember stocking up on a few ROC figures as soon as they hit, but then within 2-3 weeks, the price had dropped $2.  I'm hoping something like that happens with the Retaliation wave.

I'm insanely intrigued by these "Dollar Store" figures...

I've never even heard of Dollar General, and I don't think I have any "CVS" stores around me.  I'm going to have an aneurysm if I can't get a bunch of those black troopers and the black hooded CC.

I just think it's cool they decided to not be cheap by using the new Cobra Trooper mold.  If these are in Big Lots type of stores, awesome.  I think some of these will pretty popular.

Dollar General is pretty rough, Sprry...  In my area, espcially the farther you get from the city, stores like that get more common.  We have:

-Family Dollar
-Dollar Tree
-Dollar General
-Five Below
-Big Lots

And that doesn't get into discounters like:

-Marshall's
-TJ Maxx
-Ross Dress 4 Less
-Tuesday Morning

Some of the above cross over from discounter to dollar store type deals...

Dollar General is on the lower end of those type of stores, Family Dollar a little better, Big Lots a little better, and Five Below is among my favorite stops.

Five Below's deal is everything is $5 or less, obviously.  Great store.  They cater to young people...  especially girls, but boys too.  They've got goofy **** like zombie family stickers for your car, discount toys (including Star Wars stuff of late), Legos, Playmobil, the weirdest and coolest selection of candy, including Japanese candy, you can find...

Dollar General is pretty disturbing.  Some are bigger/better than others but they're really cheap stuff at sometimes not so great prices.

Family Dollar is a mish mash of "that's a deal" and "that's a rip off".  They get some of the GI Joe figures like are being discussed...  I remember them having those VvV stuff and single packaged figures.

Big Lots is kind of big, and they're great for Power Team Elite of course, come August-ish time.  They're not bad for toys sometimes.  I got tons of Star Trek reboot figures for cheap at one point, including Uhura and Spock, to make a blue suit McCoy...  I got them for seats and consoles and some army building/customizing junk.

Dollar Tree is a traditional "Everything is a buck" store, and they're fairly common, shockingly clean, and they are good when you need random school supplies or some dumb **** and you don't want to pay a lot.  Crafting stuff and things of that nature.  I'm always amazed how decent and clean these stores are,
honestly.  Family Dollar is often clean too, which surprises me.  Big Lots are hit and miss on that issue.  Dollar General too, but often kind of a mess...  like the k-mart of dollar stores.

If I see any of this stuff I'll post details and help out whoever I can with it.

Big Lots, Family Dollar, and maybe 5 Below are my bets where this stuff might surface first.  Dollar General would be next.  I wouldn't count on it at a store that is honestly a dollar store.

Between Dollar General and Family Dollar, there's at least ten locations within fifteen miles. I stocked up on Sand Vipers and Tele-Vipers like crazy during the VVV days, so if these show up there, I should have access to quite a few of them. Assuming, of course, they get rid of those single-packs that lacked accessories from the waning days of the 25th line.

I'm going to have to revise my toy run routes to look for some of these places.  I know about Big Lots; I get PTE stuff there from time to time, and got a lot of Indy stuff when it was being closed out there, including a couple of German trucks for something like $6 each.  I know there are "dollar" stores around here, I just don't know what they're called, though Family Dollar rings a bell.
Title: Re: GI Joe Retaliation - The Toys!

I think Family Dollar was the store that had the 25th figures for cheap at the tail end of that run.  They may have had some of the VvV stuff also, but I found that mostly at CVS for the first two waves and then I think Dollar General had wave 3 and the two 12" figures (Mindbender and Bazooka) but I'd have to double-check.

I think Family Dollar might be a good bet this time around since they did the 25th figures.

I agree on Five Below.  We just got a couple around here in the last few years but they do have some interesting stuff.  Including 25th Joes and those $5 Attack of the Clones wave figures recently.

I wish we had Ross seeing as they had such a large amount of cancelled Joe figures.  TJ Maxx has been okay, but Ross made out better IMO.

The problem with Ross/TJMaxx/Marshall's is they're hit and miss.  Fairly consistant, far more than a chain like Tuesday Morning (Again, in this family of stores, Tuesday Morning is the K-Mart of closeout stores), but some don't ever get the stuff people report finding.  It happens less than 50% of the time I'd estimate, but it does happen.

5 Belows are like fly dirt here now, and I love them.  I forgot they got 25th figures in too...  I get Card Model sets for like $1 a pack.

5 Below is worth going to just for the candy.  It's absurd.  choco rooms are great.

For Sprry's benefit too, CVS is a pharmacy, not a discounter.  I think you mentioned not having them around, but yeah, they're not like Family Dollar and stuff.  More like Walgreens or Rite Aid.

I thought CVS was a national chain?  Do they not have them where Sprry lives?  Sorry, I would have explained but I thought everyone knew wat CVS was.

Anyway, we used to have a Tuesday Morning here. I'd heard about them for a few years and then one opened, litterally, in back of my apartment.  They were definitley hit and miss, but they had some incredible deals on 12" GI Joe figures back when the 40th Anniversary stuff was getting clearanced.  I also found a bunch of hard to find Titanium Deluxe ships there, including the Battlestar Galactica ship that was a bitch to find.  They didn't last a real long time here and by the time they closed they'd really gone down hill as far as turning out anything interesting.  I did hear them mentioned again recently in relation to Joe or SW, I think, but I don't remember if that was here or another board.

On the Retaliation side, looks like General's Joes has some more info on the Amazon Retaliation (http://generalsjoes.com/2012/04/18/speaking-of-amazon-box-images-of-rumored-g-i-joe-retaliation-preview-pack/) preview pack also.  That set is a mixed bag also.  Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Roadblock and CC...but if the preview picture is any indication, it may be where that black Commander fig goes that we saw sell on eBay for $200.

Joe K works for CVS, Jesse.  It's just such a big company around here I guess I just assumed it was a nation wide chain.

That Retaliation set from Amazon could actually be an excellent buy if, as you said II, the figures are movie accurate.  Especially if, in the case of Roadblock, he doesn't have that terrible Battle Kata hand like the wave 1 does.

Battle Kata...every time I read that I can't stop thinking about that terrible Christian Bale movie, Equilibrium, and it's "gun kata." I wan the Rock, as Roadblock, after having battle kataed his way out of a room full of Cobra soldiers to throw the People's Eyebrow at the camera and yell "Gun fu for the win!" and then carry on as if nothing happened.

Maybe it is Firefly, I just was hoping for Destro because I don't see the zippers on the right shoulder of Firefly's jacket that we see in other preview shots and the head to me looks like it could go either way as whoever it is, is out of focus.  On any note, I hope it's Destro but I'm certainly not sure if it is or not.

The Crimson Guard and Night Viper are great, I'm sure they'll find a way to squeeze those in.

That playset though is horrid, in my opinion.  Stuff like that fails.  Hasbro has completely forgotten how to make cool environments across all their lines.

I thought these were shown off at Toy Fair and were definitely slated for the movie line?

The Crimson Guard and Night Viper were shown at Toy Fair and are scheduled for wave 5, I think...maybe W4.  But if the Retaliation line runs anything like the RoC line, we will never see anything past wave 2 anyway.  So I wouldn't count on ever seeing them at retail on Retaliation cards...but if you do, Surprise!

I have 0 faith in Hasbro's ability to execute a line of movie toys now.  Phantom Menace 3D, fail.  Captain America, fail. Thor, fail.  Transformers 3, fail.  Iron Man 2, fail. Rise of Cobra, fail.  Indiana Jones, fail.

I think the last sucessful movie lines for Hasbro were Transformers 1 and maybe 2 and the first Iron Man.  TF and IM were happy accidents where retail was actually kind of starved for toys that later was filled and TF2 had moderate success because they were more prepared.  But, by the time TF 2 and 3 came around it was more like the Optimus and Bumblebee show and that kind of hurt them IMO.

one thing is for sure, you are right about all of the other movie lines.  So if they do get it right it is about damn time....

I won't say that having a bunch of IM and Hulks is a bad idea yet, depending on the success of the movie.  While we see failure in not being able to get a particular figure, I am sure a bigger failure would be a child not being able to get a core character, like IM, and passing on the line entirely.  Pegs full of Loki and aliens and Nick Fury don't help anyone.

That said, I do not disagree that Hasbro has botched this stuff over and over.
Title: Re: GI Joe Retaliation - The Toys!
Post by: CHEWIE on April 27, 2012, 10:37 AM
I thought Hasbro's best work out of the last few years was the ROC stuff - I didn't have any trouble finding anything except the "cancelled" mini vehicles at the tail end of the line.  There was a lot of variety in the line too (which is something they just can't seem to want to do with the Super Hero lines).

But given the actual movie reference material, they had around 50 or so basic figures, which is outstanding... the only issues I had was there were so many versions of Storm Shadown... and not a figure of the president, and hell, why not make a Secret Service agent?  Wouldn't that have rocked?  And maybe Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow as kids?  Wow, that would have been outstanding.  I'd have been all for Scarlett with her motorcycle too.

But overall, the ROC line had some really cool stuff in it.  Just a lot of the first wave or so was overproduced.  I don't think demand was there either as so much hit clearance, but the line was far, far better than anything from Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, etc.
Title: Re: GI Joe Retaliation - The Toys!
Post by: efranks on April 27, 2012, 12:43 PM
I'm not calling the Avengers line a failure yet, as I said over in the Marvel boards, they seem to be selling here so far.  But I'll hold judgement until we actually see stuff beyond wave 1 at retail.  I agree that they need to have Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Cap out there for people, but if we don't see the bad guys (beyond Loki) or the expanded team (Widow, Hawkeye, Fury, etc) at retail then it'll be a problem.

I agree with Chewie, there were a lot of good figures in the RoC line, but the first two waves were so overstocked that I had a really hard time finding a lot of the later waves.  And there was so much stuff cancelled or shuffled off to Ross stores it's amazing Hasbro actually continued on with producing the Pursuit of Cobra and 30th Anniversary stuff (which had it's own problems with distribution).

I really have no idea what to expect from the Retaliation line.  I know I don't like the card art at all but have no clue if that will actually impact sales.  I also don't know what the case packs look like beyond wave 1 but you know they're gonna hammer us with Roadblock and Snake Eyes figures.  At least Storm Shadow looks better than the (mostly) losers we got for RoC (which can STILL be found at TJ Maxx).

After seeing that new trailer I'm pretty much convinced that (spoiler) Walt Goggins (/spoiler) will be the new Commander.

I think it's a mistake to keep pounding Iron Man over and over considering I can go into any retailer and still find a ton of Iron Man 2 figures, all of Iron Man in the same basic armor... why not a Tony Stark figure without the armor?  Or some of Loki's guards?  It's just too much of same characters over and over with the super hero movie lines.

Went by a store today called Vintage Stock in St. Louis (Chesterfield Mall) as I heard a tip that they had some of the new movie figures.

What I saw:

Basic Figures ($9.99)
- Snake Eyes  x 1
- Storm Shadow x 1

Deluxe Motorcycles ($14.99)
- Snake Eyes x 6
- Firefly x 6

Battle Packs ($19.99)
- Cobra Ninja, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow x 2
- Kamukara, Roadblock, Beachhead x 2

Vehicles ($24.99)
- AWE Striker (Snake Eyes) x 2

I picked up the Cobra Ninja set for my son, that's what he wanted.  I'll upload a couple pics when I get a chance. But overall, I thought these looked really cool.  And if standard retail can keep the prices on the basic figures down, this line could be a real hit.  The deluxes were lame though in my opinion and are destined for clearance.

$20 is a good price on those 3-packs but $24.99 on the AWE Striker, which is the Bravo line, should be about $10 cheaper than that...or more like $16.99 maybe.  The figures, I think, are supposed to be around $7.99.

You did good on that 3-pack though.  I actually may buy both of those even though I don't really have much use for another SE or SS.  I kind of dig the zip line accessories, the Cobra Ninja is a good looking figure and the other set is pretty much all win.

^ That's the pic of what I saw there at the store.  Vintage Stock stores tend to carry mostly movies, CDs, books... and a pretty cool selection of 80s-present toys.  Most loose stuff, but some carded stuff too.  And once in a while they'll get in a case or two of new figures of Star Wars or GI JOE.

I wanted to get the Roadblock set, but since my JOE fun is pretty much 100% for my son now, I just got the Ninja set because that's what he picked out.  If I was by myself, I would have gotten the other set and given him that.  He'll get that set I suppose for his birthday and most of the basic figures.

I still don't like the graphics but at least this line pops on the shelf.  Nice, bright colors compared to the dull greens, greys and blacks of the RoC line.  At this point, the figures could come in bags with header cards for all I care, just as long as they sell okay, they're easy to find, make it past the first 2 waves and don't linger 3 years later at discount stores.

Oh, and I can find the GI Joe Trooper.  I love that figure.

There are three Vintage Stock stores in my general area... one is close, the others are about 45-60 minutes away.  When Borders closed down, some of those vacant spots were taken over by Vintage Stock.  So the stores are huge.

The one that is close really doesn't have much Joe stuff at all, but has more Star Wars.

The second store, where I got these, has a really nice selection of Joes, and decent on Star Wars.

I haven't been to the third store yet, but am going to try and hit it sometime in the next week or so.  It's really out of the way though.

Holy ****. (http://investor.hasbro.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=676370)

I can't help but think that the grim box office take by Battleship prompted this.  I think someone panicked and decided they needed 3D money just in case they needed some small bump in first weekend take...and also, I don't think Paramount wanted to release this film just a few weeks after what they see as a failure in Battleship...didn't want Joe to sucked down with it maybe?  By going to March they probably are getting an open weekend with no competition.

But this HAS to screw Hasbro.  They hinged an entire summer's worth of GI Joe product on this film and now they have 5 waves of figures, vehicles and role play toys due in FIVE days at retail and it now has NO support.  I think you can kiss everything beyond the first wave goodbye at this point.

Wow....just Wow...Are they seriously going to have retailers/dist centers sit on product for a full year or will they make them send it all back?  Thanks Battle****...   >:(

I'm guessing it's too late to pull stuff back. Hasbro will have a movie line without a movie.  ::)

I'm betting we will see Waves 1 and maybe 2 on the shelves, then the rest of the basic figures delayed. Hasbro is likely scrambling to get some classic-style repaint figures/waves (like POC Waves 5&6) out so they can have product on the shelves for the rest of the year while holding back what's left of their movie stuff.

This move definitely shows a HUGE disconnect between Hasbro's "multi-media/entertainment" side and their "toy" side.

If I'm a buyer at Target, Walmart or TRU, I'm frantically dialing my Hasbro sales rep demanding information and some type of discounts on this.  There's no way this doesn't cost Hasbro huge money in one way or another.

I can see it resulting in big discounts or loss of future shelf space or even no support on other movie properties that Hasbro is producing toys for.

Besides Avengers, GI Joe was really the only other huge toy movie due this year so you have to believe that TRU and Target, at least, had some plan in the works for a featured front end (TRU) or end cap (Target) to push the movie toys.

GI Joe is still GI Joe, it has a fan base and will sell even without a movie, but I can't believe for a second that even IF Hasbro ships waves 2 and up that retail would be willing to carry much of it.  Walmart hasn't had Joe figures since the first of the year, Target is currently clearancing the leftover Renegades/30th figures and TRU, well, TRU will sit on all sorts of stuff for years...  But can we expect a store like Target to carry stuff advertising a movie that wasn't released?

Hasbro has had so many problems for the last 6 - 10 months getting any of their product in stores this CAN'T be a good thing for them.  They had down numbers in their last quarter, they laid off a bunch of people (including in the MU team and that's the ONLY line that's actually making it to retail) and I have a hard time believing that The Phantom Menace helped their bottom line that well seeing as they put out all the Buy 1 Get 1 and other discount coupons back in Feb/March.

This is such a complete cluster **** for Hasbro is so many more ways than just having a film delayed 9 months.  Other than Avengers, they haven't had a hit movie line in years, and none of them have been managed well at retail.

I guess the chance to make more money on the movie far outweighed any toy- and marketing-related costs associated with the change in release date.

Just read this as well, unbelievable.  I personally haven't seen any movie product for Joe yet, but it has to be "in the system" at this point, because wasn't it set to be available next week or something?  This has to be somewhat of a disaster for Hasbro.  Sure, it may still sell to some extent, but having a movie line with no movie out seems so stupid - has it ever happened before?  Plus, you would think Hasbro would have had some say in this, being their property, but I guess the studio gets the final word.  Too bad, I was sort of looking forward to Joe as well.

I can see the March date next year, but the fact that there have been several trailers and even a toy line (!) is what makes this so stupid.  It probably stands a better chance in that time, since it was opening only days before Spider-Man this year, and a couple weeks before Dark Knight Rises.  Not a lot of box office left for something like Joe.  But yikes, another mark in the weird year it has been for Hasbro's toy lines.

Wow...  just, holy ****balls.  Wow.

This puts Hasbro's Joe team in an odd place since the year's line is basically mapped out.  Where do you now go with it?  Do you basically cull everything after this initial launch of items, and go with some kind of limited toy launch?  Can you crank out maybe more of the stuff you had from the last year that still has demand to fill the void till March?

I guess stuff like this happens, but not often.  This seems like such an obvious mistake to me...  Are they that afraid of the film competition this year?  It's a year of toy blitzes for sure, but really was it that bad that you'd put this on the back-burner so easily?  This seems like a bad, bad move, to me.

Considering this brand has been on life support since ROC, I think this will do GI Joe in for a few years.

Incredible that it happens the day the toys hit retail and the Blu-Ray release is revealed. But if there are real problems with the film, then maybe it isn't a bad thing. Sucks right now, though.

Not to be fan boy  chicken little, but.... "death of the line"

Either the figures get held till the movie finlly hits and we have no Joes on the shelves for 10 months (won't be much of a change in some stores) or like you said, they will be on clearance before Labor day....

I don't like 3D per se, it's not something I seek out.  I just see this as a money and Job losing fiasco for somebody in Pawtucket.

I was actually planning my B-Day party around the release.  Oh well.

This feels like a kick in the stomach, an uppercut to the shin, then a wet crap in the face.

I was so looking forward to seeing this movie this summer, and my little boy can't wait.  I think this goes to show more than anything, someone wasn't happy with how the film was turning out and it looks like an act of desperation to convert to 3D to try and get kids interested in it.  At least that's what it looks like on the surface.  It looks like the movie is going to suck and they're scrambling for a way to save it.

I can't see any possible way that Hasbro is happy about this, unless they also agree that the movie just isn't all that good... I mean, really... the previews have looked cool, but not to the point where I'm blown away.  I was hoping for some more classic designs - maybe they'll take advantage of this and find a way to squeeze in some classic looking Cobra Troopers into a scene or two, etc.  I don't know.  But I'm pissed off either way.

If there aren't new figures to get, I'll be equally pissed.  And that's mostly because my son is so excited for this stuff.  His birthday is this Sunday, and we've gotten him very little so he could instead get figures at TRU next week.

Wow, that is a total fail on Hasbro's part. What a disaster for their toy lines too, and not just the JOE ones.

Now, on top of the inevitable AOTC blitz and subsequent pegwarming in early 2013, they will fixate their focus on redeeming this JOE debacle somehow and let the other lines like SW languish in disrepair even further. And God help you if you're a TF fan nowadays...

I swung by three stores on my lunch break today, Wal-Mart and Target didn't have anything out, but TRU had put out two cases of new Joe movie figures, a ton of the little motorcycle things, and some vehicles and battle packs.  I didn't think this stuff was supposed to be out until May 28 but I guess I was wrong.

I bought the following:

- 1 x Cobra Commander (black) - $9.99 each
- 2 x Joe Trooper (blue cloak) - $9.99 each
- 1 x  Roadblock battle pack (Roadblock, Kamakura, Beachhead) - $19.99 each

Almost bought Duke, but the face looked really bad.  I guess we have so many ROC heads, we could just swap one of those... also of note, the Joe Trooper's heads are swappable with their helmet, which is what Hasbro should do with clone troopers!

Those are all for my son's birthday on Sunday... I'm sure he's going to love these, just wish they had some Cobra Troopers... someome had already beat me to those.

The blue Cobra Hiss looked kind of neat, but he's got several of the older 25th anniversary ones and one of the big maroon one already.

So, I'm in a little better mood now.

I saw some of these today...barely noticed them with that ****** packaging.  The figures I saw (Roadblock with the gun-hand and the Snake Eyes and Firefly motorcycles) looked like total crap. Happy Meal toys. I'm a huge Joe nerd, but so far, I'm extremely unimpressed.

There has been some talk on Twitter that Hasbro sent a memo to TRU, at least, telling them to push the toys now rather than wait for Monday which was the original street date.

Since WM and Target generally lag a little on resetting their aisles, even if they got a memo, I wouldn't count on seeing them empty their back rooms until the weekend or even next week as originally planned.

But, I go back to what I said last night; I have to believe that Hasbro is going to get hammered by the toy buyers for these big chains over this.  Doesn't look like Hasbro stock suffered because of the announcement, at least not yet, but I'm sure this throws their entire summer toy plan for GI Joe out the window.  I can't even beging to guess at what we'll see at retail from them after June.

Yeah, the cycles are a joke.  Those type of toys are always destined for clearance.

As for the packaging, it's not the best but with how the toys are situated at TRU, it stands out.  The whole aisle seems kind of dark, then right in the Joe section, everything is a bright color.  It may not look pretty, but it was impossible for me to miss.  But the aisle space isn't that big at all - less than for ROC.

...this whole thing really is freaking weird though.  I can't imagine what their marketing plan is for this moving forward.  It seems like there isn't a huge onslaught of new product for the movie line launch, which has to be a good thing, especially now.  Unless of course, Wave 1 is massively overproduced.

I wonder what they are going to do, will they continue to ship things all year for the movie?  Will they halt things after this initial shipment?  Will there be a rush to get more of the 30th anniversary stuff out instead (Zombie Vipers, Airtight, Storm Shadow, etc.)?  Will the Hub push the cartoons more?

Maybe we'll find some SW stuff now.

Ok snag what you can at retail.  Rumor has it that they are holding all retaliation stuff that is not currently in Retailer's hands until Next Year.

So it is currently in my mind a worst case scenario.  We the collectors (and the speculators) will snag it all up pretty quick, then there will be empty pegs(or no pegs) until January.   Surely they could re-release some stuff, but they are/were geared for Movie stuff, I doubt they can un-tool fast enough to hit anything before 4th Q and then they would need to re-un-re-tool to support the movie line again.

Makes the Club Convention figures and their Subscription figures look better by default of not having any other Joes available.

Who would have thought that for the 2nd half of 2012 the highlight of Joeverse toys would be the Dollar Store waves and subsequent repaints.

Imagine the nerd-rage in NOLA in June, if I was a Hasbro rep, I'd ask for a temporary transfer to Star Wars for the summer.

I saw both Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow at a store earlier this week.  Their aisle placement made it seem like the line is a total afterthought.  But considering how bad the first movie was (ugh, do I regret seeing it!), there could be good reason for that.  Frankly, I think The Avengers has upended A LOT of the summer movie landscape, and along with it the licensed merchandising.

I think the best case for this year is some sort of repaint or retool assortment in the fall, but I'm not holding my breath. Based on POC waves 5 and 6 (which were speculated to be "rush jobs") any new items won't be seen for 4-6 months. In a perfect world, a non-movie wave with Night Viper, Black Dragon Ninja, Crimson Guard, Kwinn, and the scrapped 30th Flint figure would be available by the end of the summer. Hell, even cancelled items like POC Mindbender, Zap, and Budo would be welcome at this point. As I said before though, I'm not holding my breath.

Imagine the nerd-rage in NOLA in June, if I was a Hasbro rep, I'd ask for a temporary transfer to Star Wars for the summer.

Joecon will be very, very interesting to say the least. I do feel bad for the Hasbro guys that will be attending, since despite having zero say on the movie release change they will have to deal with a ****load of bitching from fans.

Picked up Zartan today... now I wish I had bought a HISS tank yesterday.  Ah, oh well.

I'm guessing we'll see a sprinkle of figures at Wal-Mart and Target next week, but a month from now, all that will be left will be the motorcycles at most places and maybe some of the $14.99 vehicle repaints.

Bummer.

Some thing is really wrong with Hasbro people!
This is either really good news or really bad news for Star wars collectors
I honestly think we have had such a hard time finding star wars figs because they wait till all there spring summer movies are out and then they start to let things go! I have seen this so many times with the first GI joe, Indiana jones, transformers etc etc. I think they should hold back the figures along with the movie because regardless of how well the film does GI joe toys will never do as well as star wars I wish they would just except this and put the star wars figs out!
There I said it!!!!

And let's hope they don't hike the price on star wars to try and compensate for the major failure!
And where isy GI joe renegades roadblock Hasbro?

G.I. Joe is an ongoing consumer franchise and therefore there is merchandise available to consumers.  There is a limited amount of G.I. Joe Retaliation product at retail now, but in light of the movie moving out to March 29, 2013, the majority of the movie line will be made available early next year in time for the films release.

My local TRU put the stuff out. Things were pretty well picked over, and there were no midsize vehicles, so I grabbed the black CC (only CC there), Rockblock, and the Ninja Dojo set.

Hit our local TRU today, and they had the stuff out too - although not much of it.  About a case of basic figures (I recall seeing Duke, Roadblock, Snake Eyes, and Storm Shadow), a couple of vehicles (no HISS), and that was about it.  With the Buy One Get One Half Off Sale, I picked up SE and SS.

I picked up a movie HISS at Target...close call on those three packs, but passed. Target had plenty of the entire first wave, including Red Ninjas and GI Joe troopers (including brown capes, which I hadn't seen before), but at $10 each, they can eat a bag of wet dicks.

Hit up my local Target this morning and they had everything.  Grabbed my HISS and a red NINJA and an articulated CC and left.  Looks like all the summer movie lines were out.  Hopefully I can make it to TRU sometime this week to get in on the BOGOHO sale.  The $10 price on Joes is a tough pill to swallow here....Didn't Hasbro acknowledge that they had ROC msrp up too high?  Oh well.

I grabbed 2 red Ninjas, 2 Joe soldies, Zartan, black CC, and the Ninja 3 pack today at Target.  I am holding on to this receipt as there is no way I am spending $10 on each of these figures and settling for that price - especially when TRU already has them on sale for BOGO 1/2 off (they just haven't got any in yet).

Nothing at Target today and they hadn't started their reset yet, which I is what I expected to find knowing the history of the store.

Headed to Walmart and they'd actually pulled all the clearance stuff out of the action figure aisle and had the pegs set but no stock out yet, it was all still on the cart.  I went and snagged lunch and came back to find the Retaliation stuff stocked.  One case of figures, Alpha vehicles, the Battle Kata 10" stuff and role play.  No Battle Packs or Bravo vehicles.

I picked up the Red Ninja, GI Joe Trooper and Zartan at $8.96 each and left.  I may head over to Target later this afternoon but don't expect to find anything...they're always a day or two behind on their toy aisle resets plus I really don't want to pay 10 per figure.

And, yes, Hasbro admitted that they may have priced their RoC figures too high in '09.  But I don't know what Target was thinking when they hiked the Renegades/30th price to $10.99 when they had product on the pegs that wasn't moving at $7.99.  They're off their rocker.

My local Target had one case of everything, so I grabbed the Joe and Cobra Troopers, Zartan, Red Ninja, and the HISS Tank. More than I wanted to buy, but the stuff looked pretty cool in person. And I know I'll regret waiting until next year if I don't grab it now.

I suppose if SE, SS, and Duke hang around, I'll eventually pick them up. I'd like to find a blue CC too, but I'll probably have to wait and see what WM gets.

Targets all over my area did a reset last night, to coincide with the SW figure sale, and they all had Retaliation toys out in actually decent quantities.  Cobra Trooper and Zartan were all I found harder to find...  Kind of disappointing really that they won't put more Wave 1 out just to tide people over for the Summer.

And some of the stuff is dismal...  Hinged knees are just such a horrid step backwards. Duke looks like ****.  Zartan's kind of cool and retro, if not half-assed.  Cobra Trooper is cool, as is the Joe Trooper with the dip**** headsculpt.

Hinged knees are just such a horrid step backwards.

I don't agree with that 100%. I have found that on some figures (Roadblock and Cobra Trooper) the single hinged knees allow for about the same range of motion as their double-hinged counterparts, and accomplishing kneeling positions is much easier. On the other hand the single hinged knees definitely do suck on Cobra Commander. That figure cant achieve a kneeling pose without looking totally ridiculous. So I guess the merits of the single hinged knees just depend on the particular sculpt.

I've been seeing (and reading about) certain figures being restricted to certain stores. So far Target only seems to have black CC and tan Joe Trooper, while Wal-Mart seems to be the place to go for blue CCs and blue Joe Troopers. Based on online posts only TRU seems to be getting a mix of all variants. Since I have many Targets in my area, which all appeared to stock at least 2 cases each (as opposed to WMs with one case each) I have spotted a lot more tan Joe Troopers.

We regret that Hasbro has sent an e-mail this morning stating that Wave 2 & Wave 3 have in fact been cancelled until March 2013. The only Retaliation items we will see this year is the little Wave 1 product that are currently in stores now.

What to do?

1. If you would like to keep your order in place for Wave 2 with Kokomo Toys and still secure your items then you need to do nothing. You are locked in and good when they arrive next year.

Wow, BBTS just put up pre-orders for Waves 2 and 3 today! Ouch!

Is this Wave 1 stuff going to linger at retail? Are they going to keep re-shipping or once it's gone is that it?

Our newest sponsor, NerdRageToys.com (http://nerdragetoys.com/), put out a notice on Twitter which we also put out (@JediDefender) that they were being allowed to place orders for Wave 2 and 3, however NerdRageToys was not willing to put up pre-orders till they were 100% sure they were going to get them.

Word from Hasbro specifically was that there IS a slim chance these will make it, but it's a VERY slim chance, and so Nerd Rage wasn't going to take any chances with letting customers pre-order till they're sure their order will be filled.

I think I have read somewhere, and it could just be speculation, that once it is gone it is gone.  At some point retail will probably be using the space which was to be dedicated to this line for other hasbro lines, i.e. Avengers, Spiderman,  etc.

I found a full stock of Retaliation toys at Target after work.  Didn't look like anything had been touched before I got there.  All 12 figures (Black CC, tan GI Joe Trooper), Battle Pack, Alpha, Bravo & Delta vehicles and role play stuff.

The $9.99 price is ridiculous, though.  The Spider-Man figures were that price also.  Still, I picked up CC, Joe Trooper and a Red Ninja along with the BP of Kamakura, Beachhead and Roadblock.

I probably should have snagged the blue CC at Walmart Monday but didn't.  It was gone Tuesday night, the only other figure missing since I took three out Monday morning.

Busted out the new HISS and was surprised to find it's a new, or at least modified, mold. No more moving treads, no spring-up action (completely different chassis), and no hatch for figures on the rear underside. Also, the canopy is tinted blue instead of red, as pictured on the box (which bums me out as I thought the red canopy on the blue tank looked super badass).

Yeah, they retooled that whole vehicle.  That's how they got it back down to $20 when the previous Delta vehicles had been pushing up towards $30 at some stores.

I passed on it today and it's one of the reasons I picked up the Crimson version and tracked down a loose brown tank when I had the chance.  I wanted to get the nicely detailed ones before Hasbro moved on to this model.  I don't know if I'll bother with it.  It's nice, but I'll probably pass.

I almost came out of Target with the Ghost Hawk, though.  I just don't like the huge engines on the otherwise undersized wings.  I still wish they'd gotten that RoC Howler done.  That was an excellent piece.

The Wal-Mart by my house apparently put out two cases last night - I went by there today, nothing left but several of Roadblock, Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes... can't believe they didn't double pack the army builders in Wave 1... well, yes I can.

Someone bought the blue CC from Walmart that I left on Monday and that's the only single carded figure that's moved besides what I bought.  A few of the Alpha motorcycles have sold but that's it.

Target sold Zartan and one other figure, one of the dupes of 'Block, Snake or Storm...I didn't look closely enough to see which.  I think someone bought a Bravo vehicle and that's all that's moved there besides what I bought.

This is the off season for toy buying here, though.  The two colleges just finished so those students are gone, not everyone is back from other schools and other than this past weekend, the summer people aren't here yet.

If even the other local Joe collectors haven't bit on these yet, unless someone does some speculating, the stuff is gonna rot without a film to back it.  But another down side to that is when this stuff does shift, whether or not that's at full retail or discount, I don't think buyers are not going to be that interested when it all makes a come back in 9 months.

I saw all these at a local hardware store that carries toys but no one buys anything from.  This is the place were I found a Renegades Storm Shadow for $10 a few weeks ago for Mikey.  They had the blue CC but prices are up to $11.  Insane.  I'm sure most of this stuff will be hanging around until the movie actually hits.

Joes are quickly disappearing at the Targets, Wal-Marts, and K-Marts around me. SS, Roadblock, and SE are the only easy figures to find. Dojo sets, Red Ninjas, and Joe Troopers are non-existant. Alpha and Bravo vehicles seem to be the slowest sellers, and everything else just appears to be uncommon.

Anyway, below is a pic of my current Retaliation collection. I told myself "No vehicles until March!" but I caved on the Fang Boat yesterday. This is my first Sting Raider/Water Mocassin, and I am very happy to have it. It's a very cool vehicle, and I can't believe I waited this long to get one.

Picked up the two three packs, which are really outstanding values.  I prefer both the Snake Eyes and the Storm Shadow from the set to the single carded releases, and both of the three packs come with a ****load of weapons and accessories.  The Kamakura and the Beachhead are both great.

Passed on the Fang Boat, just because I can't stand that big honking gun off to the side.  I wish they'd included a regular cannon so you could switch it out, in that case it would have been an easy two for me.

I've gotten everything I want (more than that, actually; wish I hadn't bothered with the single carded Snake Eyes or Zartan) except a blue CC, but if I never get one, I won't really care.

Since I don't have any Dollar Generals around me, I guess I'm done with Joes until March of next year.  Way to go, Hasblow.  ::)

Does anyone have both a Duke and Joe trooper from this and would be willing to do a head swap (if they can) and take a pic?  Preferably putting the trooper helmet head on the Duke body and Tatum's head on the trooper body.  You can take the web gear off the trooper if you think it looks good.

I was just wondering how this would look since I hate the Duke body - and I thought it would add some variety to the Joe troopers and that Duke would look better as well.

Duke's head seems to sit a little low on the Joe Trooper body, and the Joe Trooper's helmet sits high on the Duke body. Removing and swapping the scarf might fix those issues.

I ended up buying way more of this line than I initially intended. I think I have everything available right now except Duke, the Ghost Hawk, Snake Eyes w/ cycle, blue CC, blue cape Joe Trooper, and of course the roleplay stuff and the Action Battlers.

It's a pretty decent line overall, and it's certainly not overstocked. I'd love to get a couple more Red Ninja and Joe Troopers. The only thing I'm really disappointed in is the Firefly Wheel Blaster Bike. I should have known better, but I really wanted a movie Firefly before next year. He looks absolutely terrible off the bike, much like the old POTF2 Biker Scout.

No problem! The scarf is glued in place, but it is a separate piece. Some boiling water and/or careful knife work might be enough to get it free.

I think it's totally random, it's just that it was mostly WM/Blue, Target/Black to start with. I did wonder for a minute if it was a blue vs red type thing that we've seen between WM and Target before, but pretty quickly dismissed that.  Plus, as mentioned, TRU and KMart are getting both.

I'd be interested to see a comparison between the dates on the cardbacks from a blue to black.  I wonder if they produced equal amounts or if they switched over manufacturing at some point to get to the other color.  Same with the Joe Trooper.

I have dropped the trooper (with parachute) from the 2nd floor balcony in my house. It works well which surprised me. I think it would work even better if I were higher up. I'm hesitant to bring it outside since I could imagine a nice gust of wind taking the figure away.

Wave 1 had a few "special" figures mixed in with the regular 9 figures. These "special" figures are rare and won't be re-made. The Black Cobra Commander is a rare one that will only be seen in Wave 1. Also there is Joe Colton (Bruce Willis' character). I saw these at TRU when the first came out but didn't pick them up for some reason.

If the distract wharehouses for the big retailers are still holding onto whatever is left of Wave 1, then those rare figures might pop back up in Feb/Mar.

Lmao...

My son has a couple of these, so I can use that as an excuse to try it... and did last week outside.  It didn't work too bad at all, actually.  At least in his eyes, it was amazing... to me, it was ok.  We put the parachutes on some Neo Vipers from the first movie though because the helmet keeps popping off the Cobra Trooper, and he's afraid he'll lose the helmets.  So those two guys are now flanking the new Cobra Commander in his diorama setup.

Put my HISStank together tonight.  Took me awhile to connect the body to the tread portion.  Quite a few paint scrapes and overspray on some parts so may take it back.  CC driver with 5 points of articulation ain't bad - if I was a 5 or 8 year old, but I can understand Hasbro wanting to keep costs down.  Might pick up the Joe jet tomorrow and see how it floats...

The Cobra Commander figure that comes in blue is supposed to be the standard for Wave 1. I'v only seen one of the black variants and one Joe Colton. I'm sure the Colton figure will be widely available in later waves. But it looks like Hasbro did release him as a rare figure to pick up within the first Wave.

So I got a Cobra Trooper...

What an outstanding figure!

The chute's cool, but past that the figure is pretty top quality from head to toe...  My only gripes are pretty minor ones like the web harness having no paint detailing (so it looks pretty toyish), the lack of ankles is a slight bummer...

I get the articulation cuts annoying the Joe guys, but honestly this Cobra feels just as poseable as any other Joe I have.  The double-hinge knee seems really unnecessary at this point.  Maybe even excessive...  Kinda like ball jointed wrists.  neat, but unnecessary.  For Star Wars I feel that way on ankles to be honest.  Neat, but not necessary on many figures.  Jedi and army builders only really, to me.  On Joes I'd say mains/army builders but secondary guys, no.  Maybe add Ninjas too since their weird poses are kind of integral to that excessive articulation.

Anyway, I want a Retaliation Joe Trooper but haven't seen one in a bit...  I'll live without it if I don't see it.  I want it for a nice "modern" Greenshirt to stand next to the Dollar General Duke I got...  Like old school/new school comparison.

Not all the Retaliation guys look too hot...  Duke for instance.  But some really are outstanding figures IMO.  Red Ninja looks good, the two troopers, Zartan looks cool...  And those multi-packs are insanely cool IMO and a good deal.  Too bad this line got a kick in the nuts from the film's delay.
Title: Re: GI Joe Retaliation - The Toys!
Post by: Sprry75 on June 20, 2012, 08:13 AM
I'm with you on not all figures needing the extra articulation.  I generally prefer the swivel wrist to the ball-jointed, since the ball-jointed wrist just looks goofy.  And I'm totally with you on ankles; very few figures need this.  The exception is the new swivel ankle that they've put on the Red Ninjas, Storm Shadow, and Snake Eyes.  That is a cool joint for ninjas.  The Joe Trooper doesn't need it, though.

I just find it so remarkable that my local Walmarts/Targets have sold through this Wave and already restocked it multiple times in the past few weeks. These same stores cannot get a new F-ing SW figure on their pegs to save their lives.

I could have easily army built every figure from this wave, even the variants like Black CC.

That's how it is supposed to work...make it easy for consumers to purchase your product.

I ran across a blue CC at Walmart this weekend and picked it up.  The date stamp on this figure is 20611 while the black CC that I bought from Target, on launch day, is 20751.  That would date the blue version earlier than the black.

I have 4 GI Joe troopers, 2 each blue and tan helmets/cloaks.  One blue version was purchased at Walmart at launch and the two tan versions were purchased at Target, one on launch and the other a week or so later when they put up another case.  The second blue version was picked up for me by a friend and I forget now if it was at Walmart or Kmart.

One blue version is dated 20621 and the other is 20651.  Both tan versions are 20751.  I mixed up the two blue versions so I don't know now which I bought and which came from another location.

On Sunday I spotted two blue version GI Joe Troopers and, I believe, a blue CC at Toys-R-Us.  I didn't check the date stamps and for the price they charge, didn't buy any.  I don't know how long they've been there, the pegs were pretty full, so they could have put out multiple cases at launch and not sold any, sold through and restocked or just filled up partially empty pegs.

If I had to make a guess, I would guess that the black CC and tan GI Joe Trooper are the running change and that they were meant to go forward.  But, with the line being cancelled and coming back next year, anything could happen.  There could still be cases of each out there waiting to get stocked, Hasbro could be holding on to more W1 and we don't have any idea yet what's already packed up, as carry forward figures, in post W1 cases.  We also don't know yet if Hasbro will go back into production on W1 characters either as additional W1 case packs or as carry forward figures and what version those might be.

Lots of stuff up in the air right now.  But, again, if I had to guess, if there had been no interruption to the releases, we probably wouldn't see more blue versions of either figure after that first release.

Stopped by a Kmart looking for Mr. Blue but came up empty handed.  Figures are on sale though for $7.99 until 07/30.  Didn't see the HISS assortment of vehicles but picked up a Fangboat for $11.99.

That's a great score on the Fang Boat.  My Target stocked another round of the 3-packs and the Bravo Vehicles.  No more Delta wave or single carded figures though.

Walmart only had 1 case of wave 1 and never stocked the Bravo or Delta vehicles although they did have shelf tags for them.

The K-Mart sale is pretty good. I'm ashamed to say I picked up the AWE Striker last week for $12, and I plan to get a couple of the Fangboats and maybe the motorcycle sets later this week. The worst part (aside from me considering those motorcycles) is that K-Marts around here have been very picked over for the single figures, even before the sale, so nothing good is left.

If anyone is looking for a Red Ninja, blue CC, or blue Joe Trooper feel free to shoot me a PM. I have one of each MOC that I'm trying to get rid of.

I'm more worried about the Wave 1 figures and motorcycles clogging up pegs and preventing that awesome raft w/ diver set from hitting shelves. Hopefully the quantities of re-released "old" stuff will be on the low side.

You really typed that?  >:D Remember this next year this time when you still don't have Jinx, Blind Master, Bruce Willis or the cool army builders like Crimson Guard.  The fact is, even the hype behind a "cancelled" line making it to retail this year didn't generate a complete sell through. The 3-packs may be an exception, but it looks like the stores here got a second case and nobody has touched it.

Shipping more wave 1 next year is a complete cluster.  We'll see how it goes, but I have a feeling come SDCC 2013 the Q&A will be all about how Hasbro promised w2 and beyond and how we still don't have it.

Those are the Dollar General GI Joes. Currently they are very hard to find (and thus, very expensive on ebay) but supposedly more should be hitting Dollar General stores in the coming months.

They may have been sold in Dollar General but they were $6 each so that guy just did the standard and doubled it.  I really liked them more than what Hasbro put out for the Retaliation movie, though...well, I liked the GI Joe Trooper from the movie line.

But, yeah, the Dollar General figs have been hard to find.  I scored a full set in one shot at a store on the other side of the lake and then found 2 more at a store in a town about 15 miles from here.  Both stores are in really small towns and kind of out of the way.

^ Same at my local Target. I wish I'd have grabbed that Ninja VAMP now. I saw it last Thursday and Friday night I decided to grab it, but by the time I got back there the space in the aisle was gone and only a few figures were out on an endcap.

Oh well. I'll just make sure I grab it next spring. It does seem weird to me that Target would just take the stuff off the shelves instead of putting it on clearance.

I've been wondering what Target was going to do with their stock.  Walmart mostly sold through and they have clearance prices on what's left.  My store never got the $20 wave of vehicles and I don't think they had the 3-packs either.  But sold through the $14 vehicles and even the motorcycles for the most part.

My Target never got the new Ninja Vamp because I was haunting the ailse looking for one once I found out they'd hit some stores.  It's hard for me to believe that Target would pull the stuff and sit on it until next February-ish, especially since they'll be getting more of what they have now because Hasbro has said they'll be shipping more of the Wave 1 stuff.  Target just doesn't seem to run their inventory in that manner.  But, who knows, this is an odd situation.  Still, the original plan for summer must have included Joe so where did the original aisle space for Joe in this summer reset go?

Took advantage of the decent weather and drove about 20 miles to the next town over and hit Walmart and KMart.

Walmart had the new Joes, including Joe Colton, Lady Jaye, Firefly, the ninjas and second versions of Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and Roadblock.  They also had the wave 2 battle packs.

I would have bought more but after paying $31 for the Ninja cruiser last night I only picked up Jaye, Colton and Firefly and the Mouse 3-pack.  I'd like to have also snagged a couple of the Ninjas and maybe even Roadblock and Flint, but I passed for now. Saw what is, I'm guessing, considered wave 2 at a local Walmart today, and passed on all of them. The one figure I had definitely planned on getting was Colton (because its Bruce Willis after all), but his eyes were crossed worse than any Chewbacca I've ever seen, so I left him. I wasn't too impressed with any of the others' paint apps either, and Lady Jaye was especially sloppy. For 10 bucks a figure, I expect a lot more.

I did, however, grab the Cobra Invasion Team 3 pack, which is pretty great. Firefly is pretty much a POC-style update of the RAH figure, and the Paratrooper uses the POC Shock Trooper as a base, including most of the gear from that figure plus the parachute and harness from the first Retaliation Cobra Trooper but in black (the harness; the chute is still blue with a red Cobra logo). Storm Shadow looks like the single carded release (which I don't have, so I may be wrong) but he includes more accessories including a RAH style backpack. Very cool set, and highly recommended for fans of the POC stuff.

Title: Re: GI Joe Retaliation - The Toys!
Post by: efranks on February 27, 2013, 09:38 AM
I think that may actually be the price, my store has new shelf tags showing $19.99 in place of the $31 it started at.  That's supposed to be the MSRP on them anyway so hopefully it'll stick at that price.  Nothing has moved in my store except the Ninja Cruiser I bought and a couple packs of the bagged Micro Force...which I also bought.

I'm not holding out much hope that this line is going to move, even when the film opens.  My store is basically stocked with last year's toys, the only single carded figures on the pegs are wave 1 Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and Roadblock.  I found the Flint, Jaye, Colton wave at WM out of town and I'm hoping my WM at least skips wave 1...but once again, my recommendation is if you want anything beyond wave 2, order it online.

I'm definitely ordering a case of the wave with Kwinn in it...I'm NOT missing that figure and I'm not holding out any hope it'll ever see retail.

I haven't really bought much of the movie stuff this time around, but I did get the Ninja Duel Snake Eyes this week, and it is a pretty nice figure.  I have been holding off on the figures a bit this time around, since pretty much all the ones I grabbed from the first movie (aside from SE and SS) have been packed away pretty much since then.  The Tomahawk (or Eaglehawk) is tempting though, when that hits.

Found a blue Cobra Commander and GI Joe Trooper at Target today, and picked up another Red Ninja, so it looks like wave 1 is making the rounds again.

Also, I picked up the dollar store repaint of the Cobra Trooper (the blue one with yellow webgear) at TJ Maxx. I found two of them, and no other figures from the wave. One's up for grabs if anyone has an extra Storm Shadow from that same wave, though the card isn't mint.

Dollar store orange Storm Shadow on Ebay via China:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/271190218733?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I hate walking into the dollar stores in my area and wasted so much gas looking for the last round of figures so I just bit on this.  You can make an offer to get the figure at a lower cost - you get three attempts for it to accept your best offer.

I tried $8 - declined
$9 - declined
$10 - accepted.

So either the sweet spot is $10 or it is between $9-$10 in case any of you want to bite and try and get it for the lowest price possible.   ;) :P

Thanks for that. Been looking for that Storm Shadow for a while, and was getting tired of coming up empty at TJ Maxx, and the local DGs are just saturated with the first wave.

I got my wave 3 case from BBTS and they all look great.  So far I have only cracked open Cobra Commander and he is really cool and I might nab a second one for other head if I find him at retail.  I really like his Fang copter thing he comes with too.

I only quickly glanced over the rest but the worst of the bunch paint apps wise was Road Blocks head - they we went waaaayyyyy too think with the paint on his facial hair.

Got my order from Small Joes.  SS, SE, CC, Budo & Kwinn.  So awesome to finally have Kwinn.

Looks like my Wally put the new wave directly to clearance.  I grabbed the awesome new Storm Shadow, Snake-Eyes V2 and the incredible Cobra Commander for $3 each!  Left Firefly behind, and Crimson Guard rang in at $10.

I stopped over to RS and found on their Joe forum where people reported seeing a few newer items at Walmart as well.  I really didn't expect that to happen as I haven't seen a WM or Target that left Joe on the planogram.

I've also seen reports of full cases of Roadblock or Snake Eyes showing up at TRU.  Apparently Hasbro thought that would be okay with us, proving once again they're ******* idiots.

You know there's only 5 characters in the GI JOE universe that sell. That's why you see so many Zombie-Vipers, Lifelines and Low Lights still hanging around in stores everywhere.  ::)

Someone cleaned this WalMart out.  In fact, they had a TON of UltimateFX sabers marked down to $15.  I let my son pick one out (he picked red).  I went back to grab a Luke and an Anakin for him so he'd have all three colors, and they had one Luke saber left and two Anakins.  They blew through these.

After reading some reports online, I stopped at Toys-R-Us and Five Below over the weekend.

TRU has been getting the Blind Master/Jinx wave in and I found leftovers at the store in Binghamton, NY.  I picked up the Blind Master but no sign of Jinx or the Night Viper.  The Eagle Hawk is on Green Clearance until the end of the year, with green meaning 40% off the tagged price of $44.99.  I picked up another and tried to use their 20% coupon but apparently they wouldn't apply that due to the clearance pricing.  Still, $29 out the door with the chopper.

Five Below has been getting in cases of the Ultimate wave.  Of the two Five Below stores I stopped in, only one had leftovers from the case.  I spotted Kwinn, Cobra Commander, Budo and a couple other figures.  At $5 each I picked up the Ultimate movie Flint and Duke.

I'm still surprised that the Blind Master wave showed up at TRU but a while back I did find the Kwinn wave at a store so they're really the last major retailer giving the brand any shelf space.  It's also surprising to me that HTS no longer lists most of the Kwinn and Blind Master waves of figures on their site but they're showing up at Five Below.  I'd pay $10 all day for more Night Vipers and even for another shot at Jinx.  It's really too bad that Hasbro is treating this line this way.

Figures, after I dropped waaay too much cash on a set of NV, Jinx, and Blind Master on ebay. My local store is a lost cause, with thirteen w1 Roadblocks on the pegs. Roadblock, quite literally blocking the road. (Ha! I kill me.)

Maybe this will drive prices on ebay down for Night Vipers. I wouldn't mind having a couple more, but at $40 or more each...

I wonder if Tuesday Morning is still getting the Ultimate wave in. I just found out there's one about an hour south, and I might consider hitting it if they do. Of course, there's a TRU Superstore there too, so it may be worth the trip anyway.

I'm jealous of the Five Belows up north getting the "Ultimate" wave. Down here the local Five Belows are only stocking the Night Viper wave, which isn't terrible, but the "Ultimate" wave would have been way better.

TRU has also been stocking the Night Viper wave fairly regularly over the past three weeks or so. I think one case per week at two different stores in my area. Once again, I would have preferred to see the "Ultimate" wave.

I found some figs tonight for my bro but 5B's are getting picked over DAMN fast here.

I got a Kwinn, Flint, and some others.  Army builders are almost always gone immediately.  I'm looking though.

I was hoping to find Lady Jaye for myself, but that's not the wave coming in here I guess?

I got an Ultimate SS though, for my meager "I want ultimates of figures I dug as a kid" collection, and holy **** is this SS "ultimate" to the max.  I can't even tell what half his accessories even are, they're so tiny and weird looking.

Ultimate SS is a steal for five bucks. Kwinn and Flint are pretty awesome too. As I said earlier... I'm so bummed my region isn't getting that wave. I would have a field day.

Regarding Lady Jaye, that figure is shipping with the other assortment, aka the Night Viper wave. I'm hoping the Five Below distribution changes at some point, with the Night Viper wave hitting up north and the Ultimates down south. If you get desperate for a Lady Jaye and don't mind paying ten bucks, TRU might be worth a shot.

Dang, Jesse.  I passed up a Lady Jaye fig at TRU last weekend.  I won't be back to that store anytime soon though.  HTS still has her in stock also and there was that 20% off w/ free shipping code but I think it expired Monday.

I'll hold out for 5Below.  I think these may keep turnin up and new cases may surface.  As fast as they're selling I wouldn't be shocked.  Guess I need to get a beret and sawed off shotgun for flint next time my brother does a Marauder order too. :) He's not as ultimate as the title suggests.

My brother wants night vipers and crimson guards...  Those don't seem to linger.  Budo does though.

I saw Lady jaye at a 5 Below yesterday... along with a bunch of ninjas (Blind Master, Cyber, Dark)... not sure what figures are in what wave.

If you spotted Blind Master then it was probably the wave with Jinx and the Night Vipers in it.  Lady Jaye and Colton were repacked in that wave with the Cyber and Dark Ninjas and a couple other figs...maybe a Roadblock.  I spotted that wave at TRU a couple weeks ago and picked up the NV figs and Jinx.

I spotted the Ultimate wave again at Five Below the same day; that's with Ultimate Duke, Flint, Roadblock, SE, SS, Cobra Commander, Combat Ninja, CG, Kwinn, Budo and Data Viper and one other I'm not thinking of...might be the Dark Ninja though.

Some of these waves have been showing up at Tuesday Mornings stores also.  Not sure how long the restocking will last but it's been a good ride.  I filled in the last couple of holes and picked up some army builders so I'm pretty happy especially as it doesn't look like we'll get anything else besides this 1 and done 50th anniversary wave until the next movie...and we don't know when that will be.  And speaking of that 50th wave, I'm still interested to see if we actually get it.

I'm looking for those Night Vipers and LJ's for myself and my brother (LJ for me, NV's for my brother).  We only seemed to get the "Ultimate" wave you mentioned Eric...

Oh and I'd take a Colton too just because.

I wish the Five Belows near me were stocking the Ultimate Wave. Only the Night Viper wave hit down south, and there haven't been any restocks for a few weeks now.

Jesse, if you want a Lade Jaye and/or Colton LMK. I might be interested in trading for some Ultimate Wave figures if you can get them.
