Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Help with Paints
« on: October 4, 2005, 03:24 PM »
I didn't know acryllic spray paint existed, but I read on a model-building forum that some builders use "acryllic auto body" spray paint.  Never used it, nor did they elaborate as to the brand names or vendors.  *shrug*  I'd go back and ask them about it, but I can't remember where I saw it.  Just google for that term, I guess.

As for masking for paint jobs done by hand, I get the pin-striping tape found at a local hobby store.  One brand is Pactra, the other I'm not sure of.  It provides the best seal, so long as you handle it carefully with needle-nose tweezers.  I've seen it in withs from 1/16th", up to 1/2".

I've never used acryllic spray paint, just the brush-on kind, which can be found at any craft store (Michael's, Robert's Craft), and even Walmart.

I think Darth Delicious gets Tamaya paints, but I don't know if he gets the spray kind.

Awesome setup Chewie.  I like that shuttle - beautiful weathering job.  I do covet thine possessions!

That shelving you use, is that the same kind I could get at Walmart, Target, or a hardware store?

I've only used spray paints for 1:32 model cars, but not enough to be a pro.  For the vehicles you'll be doing, use acrylics, like Chewie said.  Especially since they are small and you don't have to cover a ton of surface.

I've never used the more expensive acrylics like Tamaya.  I've found Apple Barrel and FolkArt brands work just fine.

For the sealant/clear coat, I use Testors Dull Cote.  It works great and isn't sticky when dried or aged.  Always spray it on outdoors or in a WELL-ventilated place like a garage with the doors open.  Be sure to spray it on in thin coats, and let it dry before spraying on more.  I usually do 2-3 thin coats per side, and it takes about 1 hour from start to finish.

If you spray it on too thick, it will get sticky and you can get globs of it in crevices.

Mine went out to DD Saturday.  Never have the wiff send something if it's urgent!

While we all expect great work from you, DD, I think this  is one of your best (this coming from someone who is a bonafide clonut, and your clones are fantastic).  His paint job is very well executed, and he looks like a real mean dude - but to make armor for him that's actually REMOVEABLE!  That's very difficult to pull off and still make it authentic-looking.  He looks great with or without, which in my opinion makes this a perfect mesh of artistic vision and ingenuity.

i managed to ruin it with the Dremel

If I had a buck for every time I've ruined something with the Dremel, I'd be a rich man.

Thanks G.

The first gun is the backend of a clone rifle, with the front end of the GI Joe rifle below, which came with a lot of figures through the years, including Neo-Viper Commander.

Can't remember where the stuff came from for his second, larger gun.....looking that up now.

The only thing that doesn't really do it for me is the chest design - it's a little hard to distinguish the colors

Yeah, this was the exact figure I was griping about in my Lack of Direction thread.  His chest literally bugged the shite out of me, and I finally tossed in the towel and stopped fudging with his chest, and much of the rest of him.

How did you make the visor?

My first attempt at a Cody-like visor:
I took the rubber treading that comes with many Lego sets (like ones with tractors), and chopped, glued, filled, and sanded until it looked somewhat decent.  First I made a template for the side visor pieces from the same rubber treading.  Then, using wood carving tools I made the cuts for additional ones.  I then glued the bare rubber pieces in place, let it dry, then filled in the gaps with Sculpey.  Finally, I sealed the Sculpey with generous amounts of super glue, let it dry (overnight, so it stayed hard), sanded to shape, then painted.

Man I love that Clone Pilot.  He just looks 100 times meaner and deadlier than the original one.  That turret's awesome, but what I find most impressive is your use of items from other lines as well as from your bathroom cabinet.   ;) :P

My entry for the September 2005 Customizing Challenge

His name is Eidolon, formerly known as CT 44/001.  Previously served as Lieutenant to Commander Cody in the 212th Attack Battalion, Shadow Company.  Prior to that he served under Commander Fordo on Muunilinst, and Hypori, receiving promotions to Captain, then Lieutenant for outstanding service rendered.  After the Jedi Rebellion, he left galactic military life to pursue a more lucrative and satisfying career in bounty hunting.  He specializes in Long Range Recoveries and Assassinations, often contracting with the Galactic Empire to hunt down the ever-elusive Jedi traitors.  His handiwork in that regard is frequently broadcast over Imperial Holovision.

Figured I'd give him some kind of back story to make up for the fact that he is, after all, yet ANOTHER clone custom.  This was my first time messing with sculpting, and I learned a lot.  This guy took forever!

Eidolon

Now, lemme have it!
