Interesting tidbit from Darryl DePriest in the ForceCast (http://www.forcecast.net/story/home/Collectors_Edition_Spotlight_Derryl_DePriest_136555.asp) this week...
1 EU Figure in Every Wave come 2012. I'm sort of surprised. Plus his desire to see comic packs actually come back. Let the EU bashing begin! (or the love)
-
Sounds good to me. May help me be more interested.
-
Can you block me from being able to read this thread? ;)
I don't know if I have the energy to stick up for EU stuff this much.
-
Allow me to fire the opening salvo. ;D
This is great for trawling out much needed figures from Droids, Ewoks, and the Holiday Special.
But do they really need all those slots for D-list schmoes from the comics, novels, and video games? :P

Well, there are several EU figures that were in the last ToyFare poll...I'd expect them to focus there:
3) Darth Caedus 8%
4) Darth Plageuis 7.9%
5) Jaxxon 4%
6) Admiral Pellaeon 3.7%
7) Dash Rendar 3.7%
8 ) Guri 3.6%
19) Joruus C’Baoth 2.3%
-
Awesome!
(SING LIKE QUEEN) Dash...AH-HAH..DEFENDER OF THE UNIVERSE!
I will have to listen to this, as long as they stay with top tier EU and not C-Listers I would be ok with this.
-
I like this! I am not up on anything and everything EU - but I really do enjoy this stuff because they kinda keep collecting "fresh", in a sense, for me. When Hasbro puts one of these figures out I get to do a little researching to find out what they are all about - kinda fun to me.
-
Well, there are several EU figures that were in the last ToyFare poll...I'd expect them to focus there:
There is also Anakin Solo, who is pretty much (aside from the 'never gonna happen' dead Padme figure) the last figure they need to make to finish off the 25 from the original Toy Fare poll.
If they want to give us Solo kid #3 or any of the SotE or Thrawn trilogy characters from that Toy Fare poll list, that'd be fine with me. I'd also accept Rogue Squadron pilots (sorry CHEWIE :P), KotOR characters (like Carth, Mission, Zaalbar), or early Classic Marvel stuff (Crimson Jack!).
-
I'm not one who is real big into the EU stuff either, but I'm happy for those who are. There are a few figures that I wouldn't mind seeing done anyways, and there is other cool stuff out there, but honestly I'm just not too familiar with EU (for the most part) outside of the Zahn trilogy. I've read a few other things here and there, but not enough to have a huge list of "wants". Again, happy for those who are really looking forward to more EU stuff though. It makes me wonder if they are realizing how the movies are getting pretty well covered, so adding an EU figure each wave helps them to pad things out a bit.

I just realized, they may be doing this for figures from the upcoming The Old Republic game.
-
While I don't follow any EU, I don't really hate this. However, I do hope that they are all from one source, such as TOR. I just think that it's better to have a collection that comes from one place, than a bunch of random choices.
-
I wonder if any of the EU choices will be for characters that are just off screen, therefore aren't technically PT or OT.... Probably not though.
I find that the EU I like is largely stuff that fits into the 'just off screen' category, or atleast that's how I justify it to myself...
Also, what would the Star Wars logo look like on the card?
Star Wars
Expanded Universe
?
-
Hasbro said we would be getting figures from TOR, TFU2, and one other source (I don't remember if they were just talking games or EU in general). Obviously this is how we will be getting them.
Also, what would the Star Wars logo look like on the card?
Star Wars
Expanded Universe
We will know when pictures of Nom Anor's card come out this year.
-
I'm fine with them including EU in the waves. I don't collect them, but I know there are others out there that do enjoy them, and appreciate Hasbro giving them a nod. If EU included, say, more concept figures like the McQuarries, I'd be ecstatic. There are still several years left in Hasbro's license, that it makes sense. That way they can space out the movie figures more. There are only so many figures to update, plus some that have yet to be made, so this widens the pool of candidates to be made.
-
Bear in mind that there's also a number of comic figures tooled.
DD mentioned a little about how he wants Comic packs to return and how he thinks they can improve. He also was hinting at a number of things were in the planning stages and possibly got to tooling but he didn't want to get specific.
One thing he did mention was that there was a Dagger Squadron comic set kind of related to the Dagger Squad B-Wing that TRU had.
Anyway, there's obviously others that did make tooling it appears like the Wookiee/Noghri set, etc. It's easy to slip characters like that into a wave when the tooling is already done. The big financial hurdle is behind you at that point.
-
I'm not sure what wookie it is, but the Noghri would also be an army builder, and a very good idea.
-
Interesting proposition from Derryl DePriest's comments. I'm not totally sold on some of the EU characters that were in the Fan Choice Poll. SOME of those are probably going to happen. But I think we're also going to see a mix of some comic characters that may have been in the pipeline along with some popular video game based figures. KOTOR, The Force Unleashed, Republic Commando and Battlefront all have MAJOR fanbases, and I think Hasbro will want to reach some of that audience.
-
I am fine with it as long as it not just another orange, x-wing jumpsuit EU figure. Or a comic book colored clonetrooper again. I hope it is actual EU characters like Guri, Dash Rendar, Nomi Sunrider, etc.
-
This is good news only if they make Rick Duel, Dani and Chihdo.
-
I hope they define "EU" a little more clearly. As far as we know, it could be guys like Luke or Han in wacky EU costumes. Personally hoping for some Shadows of the Empire goodness (Dash Rendar, Leebo, Guri, Coruscant Trooper)
-
I agree with Diddly.
I will even go a bit further with as long as it is OT based EU then OK..but if it is Prequel or anything after Heir to the Empire, I'm out.
-
This will break my carded habit, though I imagine some of these will be realistic versions of CW characters. Actually I think $9 a figure will break my carded habit, so...
-
I guess I'll have to take it on a case by case basis.
-
Sounds like it's not just EU, but Deleted Scene Figures as well. :D
-
Yeah, like Sandstorm Leia and Luke in a cave. LOL!
-
It sounded a little different than that... Possibly due to all 6 films having deleted scenes on the BR Disc, so maybe there'd be more than just Sandstorm Leia or Luke building a saber.
-
Force choked Jerjerrod here we come! :D
Carded Cami and Fixer?
-
A carded Padme with dredlocks and maternity dress can't be to far behind either!
-
This isn't that bad of an idea - although I wish Hasbro would use actual pictures of the characters from EU sources (comics, cartoons, novel covers... etc.), but, judging by the Nom Anor card, Hasbro's using artist-drawn photos.
Glad they're finding a way to slip the EU back into the mix, they've been pretty anti-EU (except for TCW) lately.
-
I'm ok with the photos if it makes sense. Is Nom Anor anywhere but an artists representation of him? And as video games age, some of the images would look pretty bad I think. Knights of the Old Republic is neat, but graphically it looks a little dated (by today's standards). I mean, imagine if we got a Dark Forces Kyle Katarn and pixelated Kyle from his cutscene was there ya know? Some pretty lame images could creep in, haha.
-
The Force Unleashed 2 will probably fill up some slots. I had forgotten they'd said those were coming in 2012.
-
there is only one EU I would want on vintage card that is Mara Jade.
-
Give me some purple rain with Dash Rendar and Guri! (I would love Snoova too!)
-
I would weep openly for a Kiro and a Dani on Vintage cards.
Corman
-
Leebo, Guri, and Nomi Sunrider would be nice.
-
Hmm. We have not had a good ANH Leia since 2004 and now they want to limit slots for her and others to get back on the shelf?
-
Don't hate the EU being in figure lines, even TVC if it keeps the line going.
But either way I won't be seeing them around. ;)
-
Though, I'm not into the era its set in, The Old Republic cinematic trailers have potential for great figures, like the Sith guys, the female mandalorian, Alderaan troopers.
-
I'm with Nick - this is fantastic news for those of us that follow the EU. I read almost all of it, so would be happy with core figures from across pretty much any of the storylines. I like the approach as well, rather than launching a seperate EU wave of figures all at once. Just having one per wave isn't that much give for non-EU fans, but a nice way to treat those of us that are with each wave.
-
I like the approach as well, rather than launching a seperate EU wave of figures all at once.
I get why they are going the 1-per-wave route, but I guess I prefer box sets or a whole wave for things like EU figures. It really bugs me when they hit EU sources with a couple figures and then that's it.
Like the Thrawn stuff for example. We got Kardde, Mara, and Thrawn, but where's Pellaeon, C'Baoth, Nohgri, etc? Or like the KOTOR game stuff - we got a couple in 2007, had to assemble a couple in 2008/9, and are getting 1 more in 2011. Who knows how long it will take to get Carth, Mission, or the rest? Or SotE - we get a great new Xizor and cankles Leia and then nothing on Dash, Guri, Leebo, etc. Lame.
The same thing bugs me about comic book figure lines - I hate it when you get 1-2 figures at a time per wave and then the line dies and you're stuck with 75% of a team with glaring omissions because they were saving "big guns" in case the line was going to keep rolling. ::)
The TFU line in 2008 was great. We got a whole bunch of stuff at once and they left a little room for more (like the extra TRU box sets that came later). Imagine if we just got Starkiller and Maris and had to wait a year for Juno, and then another two years for Kota, and another year for Proxy, etc. By the time we got to Proxy, the style/look of the figures might not even the the same anymore. Blah.
I'm all for instant team gratification! I want one big box with 5-7 figures at once - like a Star by Star box set with Jacen, Jaina, Anakin, Tenel, Lowbacca, Tahiri, and Ganner! I hate having just Jacen and Jaina and none of the other young Jedi from NJO (especially not having Solo kid #3). :(
-
I see your point, except you still probably wouldn't get ALL the figures from a storyline. A five figure set wouldn't really cover it. You could argue the same thing with current releases - the ROTJ wave hardly covers all the core figs you would want from the movie or even a particular scene. Yes, those of us that have been around long enough have those characters in an older form, but some of those key figures are several years old now.
The other thing about EU is that the fans are loyal to many different storylines. Some people like the NJO, while others want Marvel or KOTOR or Legacy. Just targeting one of these might appeal to too small of a fan base, whereas a single figure here or there might be more appealing.
-
I agree with Jeff and think I even talked with him about this at one point... I'd rather have more than a couple.
At the same time, I'd rather have a couple rather than none though.
But I liked the boxed set idea to get EU out in a wider swath, getting more of the core figures from a specific story or source. You may not get all, but you'd get a lot more than what we generally do see from any given storyline... the Solo twins are a prime example, as is KOTOR to a fair degree.
I'm not a massive EU fanatic, but I do like getting sets of stuff as opposed to a trickle that may never see another figure.
-
History of EU waves is one of peg warmers (Shadows of the Empire 1996) and often hard-to-find short runs (POTF's EU wave, Darth Revan and Malek, the final Legacy wave).
In terms of not making all the key characters of a story. That definately was a flaw in the comic packs. That's why remaking Xizor was not a great choice. He got a figure, two...technically, though by current standard, the asthetics might be lacking. But wouldn't it have been better to make a previously unmade character from Shadows of the Empire? (And were many requesting that Leia, the comic packs were Leia heavy at times...)
It bugged me (back in 1996) that Xizor had no henchmen made. Big shot crime lord, apparently, no one to do his bidding. One reason I never warmed up to his character. Heck, Jabba is just a slug without his goons.
-
This is a new hobby for me, that I started back in the fall. I first had collected back in the 70 and 80's. I am amazed how good the figures are now compared to then. My experience with EU goes as far as reading Shadows back in the 90's. Just wish I didn't have to go second market or wait to get the good OT stuff, like Leiain ANH etc. But hey what can I do but complain.
-
It depends on the EU source whether I have any interest or not.
If it is OT based (right up to Han Solo and Princess Leia having kids) then I would be interested, but Prequel or Old Republic or NJO stuff it has zero interest for me.
But give me Shadows of the Empire, Truce at Bakura, Rogue/Wraith Squadron (Human characters only please), Splinter of the Mind's Eye, The Han Solo Trilogy, The Lando Trilogy,
I get the feeling that most EU-fanatics want obscure EU Alien-Jedi-Sith-Cyborg-Bounty Hunter-Half Naked Females, but I think some of the best choices to make EU work is the additional costumes/outfits that MAIN characters wear.
SoTE had Luke and Lando in Imperial Uniforms ( a new Chewie as Snoova would rock)
Tatooine Ghost has Leia as a Twilek and as a Stormtrooper and Han as a Devoronian
Some novel had Luke and Han as Tusken Raiders.
If the characters are done right it might make me have more interest in some of the source material though. But for the most part if it is not in the Rebels (not necessarily New Republic) vs. Empire timeline, I will leave it on the shelf or more likely just trade it off when it comes in my cases ordered from Site Sponsors!
-
I hope Hasbro has some more figures from the Legacy comic book series in the pipeline. There are a few more key characters that I'd love to see them produce before we get too far away from the series being over.
I also would love to see them update the Shadows of the Empire figures and for them to give us characters like Guri and Leebo to round out that story.
I know we're getting Bastilla 'cause she won the poll, I would still love to see them produce more characters from the Knights of the Old Republic series - I know that might be asking a lot since those games are getting kind old at this point.
And lastly, there were some great designs in The Force Unleashed II and I would love to see them give us a nice handful of them, not to mention that I'd still welcome a Kazdan Paratus from the first game as well.
There's lots of great EU stuff to choose from, I've left out The Thrawn Trilogy, NJO, Rogue Squadron or Dark Forces/Jedi Knight Games - but the one thing I hope they don't do - is dig into characters from the Marvel comics. There are some great stories there, but I could do without some more lollipop colored figures.
-
I wonder if Hasbro will continue the CP format at some point after 2012... they're releasing EU figures on Vintage cards, why not just return the CP line?
-
Hasbro's been indicating that they would like to reintroduce the comic 2-pack concept at some point. Whether or not they're going to hold onto some EU characters that were in development for that eventuality remains to be seen. I was just looking through the EE exclusive comic 2-packs and there was supposed to be a set with Luke Skywalker in a white flightsuit and Han Solo from TESB. And they also said that there's likely to be a Force Unleashed II multipack some time early in 2012.
As for the EU figures on TVC cards? I think it's likely that Hasbro will play it relatively safe. Jedi and Sith seem to sell well. And some army builders, too.
But I think they're likely to focus on core characters from a few sources, and they're going to do so somewhat thematically. For instance, in TLC RED we got Jacen Solo, Jaina Solo and later this year comes Nom Anor. This appears to be Hasbro's nod to the NJO. It gives collectors a chance to group some characters together along a theme. In the NJO's case it's 2 x heroes and 1 x villain. This is a pattern we've seen before: in the 30AC line we got both Darth Revan and Darth Malak in the same wave so that these two KOTOR characters might complement one another.
Based on this pattern, it seems like Hasbro is likely to either pair up EU characters or complement some previous offerings. Bastila Shan is on the way. Is she supposed to add on to the previous KOTOR game offerings? Given what we've seen in the past that seems possibl, but I also wouldn't be surprised if we got another KOTOR game character. The ones that immediately come to mind would be a Sith Trooper, Darth Bandon, Carth Onassi or *SOME* way of representing Revan as a Jedi. I'd personally like to see Zaalbar or Master Vandar, but they seem like minor characters in comparison.
As for other EU character sources? I think video games can be a pretty strong contender. The ones that immediately come to mind would be from The Old Republic. The cinematic trailer "Deceived" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjhJcm-lpjc) made a big splash, and I could see Hasbro trying to capitalize here.

Because it failed.
Or was deemed a failure.
-
Yeah, it became a fail right when they raised the price from $10-12 and so forth.
-
It would be nice to finally get Guri and Leebo, and my much wanted Nomi Sunrider figure.

Oh yeah - Nomi Sunrider! Now that we have an Ulic figure it would be great to get her.
-
I don't mind EU figures as long as they feel right in the universe. For instance Nera Dantels (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Nera_Dantels) would look right at home in the Outlander club (and probably a KISS concert as well), and could also be displayed with the main characters. The Yuzhan Vong don't look right anywhere except in a diorama depicting their story arc. And since I don't like their story arc, I don't buy them.
The KOTOR figures have a very Star Wars-ey feel to them, so they could be filtered in to the various scenes. The Mandalorians (http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/b/bb/CanderousOrdoOnTheRavager.jpg) in the Old Republic series look great, and would be excellent army builders.

I don’t understand why you want figures to fit into scenes that they weren't in. I would rather have a figure that matches the proportions and characteristics of the storyline he came from. Thrawn for example is a figure that I don't think really fits well with other figs. Blue skin human in white military dress with a slime creature around his neck...not a great fit with most characters. That said, he is a great likeness to the novels and comics and one of the more popular EU based figures.
-
Well, for instance I wouldn't put Dash Rendar in the Carbon Freeze scene or anything, but Thrawn looks okay (sans ysalmiri) standing at attention with the other admirals in my Imperial setup. Not exactly a scene per se, but more of a setup.
I do place EU figures in crowd scenes though. For instance, Cade Skywalker looks really good in the background of the Outlander scene. The female Skywalker from the McQuarrie series does as well. I placed Leia from the Xizor 2-pack in my Jabba's palace diorama, and she looks like just another dancer (this is mostly because she doesn't look like Leia). Talon Kaarde looks fine in the cantina, albeit in the background. I also placed Rohm Kota and the "good" version of Starkiller in my Jedi setup...they fit fine.
Some setups are pretty much scene-agnostic though. My Bounty Hunters setup has characters from the films and also from EU...and they all look pretty good.
-
I think I get what you mean Lando... It's the age-old, "That looks really Star Wars-y" sentiment... And I agree on a lot of EU. I hate when it's so far out of the realm of what my Star Wars comfort zone is, and I lose a lot of interest at that point. The Vong are definitely in that realm for me too, they really just don't fit IMO.
I like some EU, hate other stuff... I like stuff that builds off what exists though. Imperial Officers, REbel Pilots, Imperial weapons like the Darktrooper or Spacetrooper, characters that are EU but established already by the films as aliens, or look at least like they could've been in the Cantina and I just missed them... That stuff.
