Title: Time for some new flip-flops.
Post by: Matt on July 26, 2004, 05:46 PM
(And no, this doesn't have anything to do with John Kerry or the Democratic National Convention.)  :P

So, after a late-night trip to Wal-Mart the other day on a search for OTC junk, during which I nearly split my kneecap after hitting a puddle while wearing some three-year-old, five-dollar Wal-Mart special flip-flops, I've decided it's time for some new ones.

(And yes, that was the most poorly-constructed sentence in the history of the internet.)

So here's what I'm looking at:

The Sanuk Fur-Real Classic

Around $30-35 at most places, I can't help but think "man, that's a lot of money for a pair of flip-flops", but, while price-searching flip-flops last night (something I never in a million years thought I'd ever be doing), I saw some sandals for one, two, even three-hundred dollars.  So I guess the thirty bucks doesn't seem so bad.

What about you guys?  Any flip-flop connoisseurs in the house?

(And yes, I am a bit hesitant to post this thread due to jjks' known foot fetish--but I feel that flip-flops are too important not to have their own thread here.)

Damn, those look comfy!  Where all are those furry things for sale, Matt?  They have black or brown ones?

I wear flip-flops as much as is humanly possible ("zorries", as my family's always called them - don't ask me why).  In fact, I sported my flip flops the entire 4 days/nights at Comic Con.  Much easier to wear than shoes.  Been wearing them into the office as well, since it's been so freakin' hot lately.  Still waiting for the boss to ask me what the hell, and demand I get back into some business casual shoes instead...

My selection is two-fold:  The old school foamy/rubber ones, with the cool colored stripes in the middle (my stripes are just black, dark grey, light grey, and white).  Then I also have a pair of brown leather ESNY's that we recently picked up at Macy's, I think.  Cut the hell out of my feet the first few times I wore them in Nashville last month, but now that they're broken in, they're working just fine.  Not sure if you can see them in my OTC Falling Down pic or not, but they're there...

But whichever way you go - just go in "zorries", and you'll be cool (like me).   :P

As for jjks' foot fettish, I guess that would explain why my toes were all wet when I woke up Thursday morning in his hotel room down at SDCC.  Damned wacko.   >:(

I used to have a pair of sanuks that looked just like those but were black.  The only problem was that they got very smelly after a while and had to be disposed of.   Pretty comfortable though.

Nowadays I really only wear flip-flops to take the dogs out, so I just have 3 dollar old-navy crap ones.

Yeah, they come in both green and black.  I like the green because they're different, and stand out a little.  They're made out of Astroturf, so when you're wearing them, it's like you're walking around barefoot in the Brady Bunch backyard.

They have both of the colors available here:

http://www.swell.com/product.aspx?sku=200762466&loc=33194&brand=27789

$28.00, plus $6.99 shipping.

I think I'm going to order mine from www.shoes.com, though.  Although they only have the green ones, they're a little cheaper, at $29.99 with free shipping on your first order.  For a cheap bastard like me, that's the way to go.

I am concerned, though:  I'm a 10 1/2, and both of those sites have the greens in 10, but not 11.  So I don't know whether to just go ahead and order the 10s, or wait until someone gets some 11s in stock.  I'm a novice flip-flop junkie, and have no idea how important the correct size is.

I don't like to stand out.  I always prefer things more ordinary and neutral.  That's why some people call me "Plain Vanilla" (better than Ned Flanders, I s'pose)...

I'd try to wait for the larger size.  I've had a lot of flip-flops, and it's been my experience that they kinda suck when they're a half size too short, and your heel is falling off the back just a little.  Much better to go a half size bigger if possible, which isn't even noticeable when you're wearing them.

I'm making a conscious decision to not tread into Hung Solow territory here.

Excellent.  We appreciate that!   :-*

I just wear those Adidas bump style flip-flops whenever I go to the park, or the mailbox. Otherwise, I'm either in sneakers or sandals.

Those are nice flip-flops though....

See
it's funny how things are called by a different name in parts of the world
In Australia they are thongs or even slippers
I know someone will show me a pic of a "thong" in the US but for us simple folk down under if you said you had some flipflops people would think you had a disease which involved falling over lots.
You crazy Americans ;D ;)

I've actually been thinking about getting some new flip flops soon here too.  I wear sandals whenever possible for the most part, and have been sporting some well worn in Nike ones pretty much 24/7 for the last few weeks.  Just comfy, and easy.  I have looked at picking up just some cheapos at a couple of different places (Wal-mart, Old Navy, etc.), but they never have a size close enough for me (I wear a 13/14 shoe).  Either they don't make them, or I miss them.  No biggie.  I'd like to get a new pair though, then at least I have some lazy footwear options :P

Not quite the pair I have, but similar.  Really comfy and nice and worn in.  I've had them about four years now.  Wear them to (but not during) softball games, around the house, around a swimming pool, on a boat...you get the idea.

These are the ones I have for when I go backpacking. Very nice to put on after hours of hiking up a mountain, dipping in a cold lake & just relaxing. My friend calls them Hochiminh's (sp) & that name just stuck with me. They run $66. CDN.

While lying on the nude beach fishing this weekend I was admiring my buddies pair of...

I really liked how his...

He had nice flip flops, they were Nike and sort of like Mikey's only without the bumps on the part where your foot goes

I've never owned a pair and I don't really like how they feel, if I was going to go for open air footwear I would look at Birkenstock as my wife has raved about them for the last 7 years non stop and has been many a Christmas and Birthday present for her

Looks like they make a Flip Flop too (http://www.birkenstock.com/styles/119032/manager=ProdDisplay&brand=600&category=20o40o120o140&user_id=0&store_id=0&page=1&cat=birki)

Never owned a pair of flip-flops?!?   Dude, you are weird...   ::)

Hemish, I think "flip-flops" used to be called "thongs" here too, for quite a while, but when bathing suit "thongs" really became popular (ove the past 10 years or so), they pretty much took over the "thong" name for good - hence the more popular name of "flip-flops" now.   ;)

Dale, I agree with Rob - those are definitely sandles sandals!  Anything that you can't just stick your feet in and go, but rather something that requires massive amounts of strapping up and prep time, ain't flip-flops!

I'm still wearing old Nike Air Deschutz.  Used to work at a sporting goods store that went out of business, so stocked up during clearance.  They last a good 4-5 years.

Have some equally old Australian flip flops called Kix.  Really wide platform, good flotation in sand.  Think the company went out of business though.

Well, MAC-daddy, I took your advice, and found a site that had the green Sanuks in size 11, and just ordered them a second ago (www.zappos.com).  This same site didn't have any 11s over the weekend, when I checked with them, so they must have just gotten them in.

Anyway, I'm very excited about my new flip-flops.  The wait to get them will surely be excruciating, but rest assured that I will be back here with a lengthy, detailed review (with pics!) as soon as I do get them, which I will also be e-mailing to jjks, as per his request.

I picture Virex ripping open the box, sliding into his new flip-flops, and dashing outside to try them out!  He must be running through the yard right now yelling "WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" as he puts them through the first work-out.

After all, no review would be complete without a breakdown of comfort level whilst walking and running in them.  That must be the reason for the delay.

This is the kind of closure I look for in threads like this...someone who is willing to let us know if you buy something and eventually if you like it.  I think, for instance, if I was talking about buying and new car...like a Honda Accord, I would start a thread and ask if anyone liked them.  If I eventually buy one I would then bump the thread and let people know that, yes, I did buy a car.  If the the thong is on the other foot and you didn't buy a car, it would be nice to know that too.

I apologize for how long it's taken me to respond to this most beautiful of threads concerning my most favorite of subjects. I just got back from Cali earlier today and have been mourning the loss of our friend Cory from the 'Scum.   :'(

That said, I have no idea how Matt's feet toes got wet...now certain other portions of his ample body, I shall remain silent on.

Back on a foot note, I demand close up pics of Virex sporting those fancy little numbers, and if possible would like to see mustard somehow worked into the scenario...

I have high hopes for Fatty's flip-flop thread here based on it's initial flurry of activity, and I think it has the potential to eventually rival the storied and well traveled W & P thread.

Keep it up fellas!  But I'm still waiting to hear about the damned flip-flops though.  Why've you gotta keep us waiting like this Matt?  You freakin' tease.

I'd love to hear about your transportation situation as well some day.  Nothing more annoying than a person who can't follow up on any of his stories...   >:(

In fact, I will be boycotting the flip-flop thread from now on, until your prior "I'm thinking of buying ___" thread is brought to it's proper conclusion.  Might have to say the same for the iPod discussion soon as well, or shall we carry that one on into 2006?   ::)

I think it has the potential to eventually rival the storied and well traveled W & P thread.

We were up to 11,000+ posts when they put the smack down and upgraded the software ruining our thread.

Ironic that a software upgrade can't handle a thread over 500 posts, but the old software could...  ::)  If you count the continuation thread over at GH, we've added another 2,000 to that total.

First of all, I'd just like to take a moment to apologize to each and every one of you for not being quicker with my initial review/impressions of my new Sanuks.  I received a lot of private messages and e-mails about it (so much so that I haven't even been able to get through them all yet), and I know that many of you have been waiting with bated breath for this moment.

That said, however, I do want to delay my official review for a while.  For as long as it takes.  You see, these things need to be broken in, and seeing as though I've only had them for a couple of days, they're just not at that point yet.  I don't know how long it's going to take.  A day?  A week?  A month?  A year?  It doesn't matter.  All that matters is being fair.  Being fair to me, being fair to you, kind reader, and most importantly, being fair to the thongs.  I just don't feel like putting up my official review of these things before they're properly broken in would be the rational thing to do.  After all, would you put up a review of a new album after only hearing, say, two songs, for example?  Or a movie, based on the first fifteen minutes?  I didn't think so.  So, in the best interests of the Sanuks, the official review is delayed.

I will say, though, this quick first impression:

I'd like to see a little more flip, and a little less flop.

The "official" reason, from a post at Rebelscum (which I assume goes for JD, too):

Quote
"Too much misunderstanding, naivity, hypocracy, self loathing, immaturity, and lack of morals on this board for me to post, and actually associate myself with the majority of the users here."

About 10 years ago I picked up a pair of $9 rubber sandals from Target. I was going camping and wanted open footwear that was durable enough for the trip and inexpensive enough that I wouldn't feel like an idiot for having to throw it away after a 3-day trashing. Lo and behold, the sandals survived not only the weekend, but  another surprising 8 years. (The last trip I used them in was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back).

I finally got around to getting another pair this summer; figured I'd dip into the well again and go to Target. Can't lose with $10.

The new ones have a soft rubber liner glued onto the sandals, I suppose, for added comfort. The problem is, it's more porous than the rubber used for the main part of the sandal and lets in stinky-feet germs more readily. After a few days of sweaty use, I'm stepping around in toxic material. And because the liner is softer, it won't  last as long. And the more frequent washings will only shorten the sandals' lifespan.

D*** them for their innovation and styling.

Well, last night I went shopping with the Mrs. and we hit Kohl's to look for shoes (great BOGO Free offer going on for lady-shoes).

Well, as I was perusing the clearance aisle (I'm a cheap bastard when it comes to buying shoes  :-[), I came across these beauties: Gotcha "Cuda" Surf Gear Sandals.

They look similar to this (the VooDoo version), but the detailing on the top is different.

Really comfortable for a thong-style Flip-Flop, and a great price to boot!  They normally retail for $49.99, but they were on clearance for only $10!   :o

I scooped them up and they will be the perfect "lounging on the deck shoes", as well as getting in some duty as "taking out the trash shoes".

This is probably the greatest invention in the history of mankind:

The Reef Dram Sandal

INFO:

    * COMFORTABLE, WATER FRIENDLY SYNTHETIC NUBUCK UPPER
    * CONTOURED COMPRESSION MOLDED EVA FOOTBED WITH ANATOMICAL ARCH SUPPORT
    * POLYURETHANE ENCAPSULATED CANTEEN IN HEEL WITH SCREW CAP
    * CAP OPENS WITH INCLUDED EXCLUSIVE REEF CHURCH KEY/ FIN KEY
    * UNIQUE SHAKER ICON MOLDED REEF RUBBER OUTSOLE

Let me post that again:

* POLYURETHANE ENCAPSULATED CANTEEN IN HEEL WITH SCREW CAP

In other words, a flip-flop flask.

Quote
Posted 08.28.2006
In a move sure to make the Department Of Homeland Security cringe and groms everywhere puke, Reef has introduced the Dram—a sandal with a flask capable of holding up to three ounces of liquor, err, liquid encapsulated in the heel.

The Dram—a common term for measuring one ounce of liquid—is the latest addition to Reef’s “thirst-quenching technology” line. Following the success of the Fanning sandal, which conceals a bottle opener in the heel, the Dram ups the ante on drunken-delinquent footwear. Features include a hidden plastic canteen in the heel with a screw cap that can be opened by using a key that is included, a miniature funnel to insure a clean pour, and a measuring bar on the footbed that shows how much booze is left in your shoe. The sandal also features a martini-shaker tread pattern.

“We really like to have fun with our leading face products,” says VP Of Product Creation Brett Ritter. “It keeps us from getting too serious with the fact that we are designing footwear. That light-hearted approach has lead us to some heavy hitters on the sales side of things.”

Ritter says that the Dram functions as well as any other sandal, and that its synthetic-nubuck upper and compression-molded EVA footbed with anatomical arch support offer a great fit. “The first point to design is in the look,” says Ritter. “Then it has to fit and be super comfortable, as well as deliver the creative, novelty aspect for our customers.”

The Dram will be spiking drinks at ASR in September and will hit retail on March 1, 2007 with an MSRP of 45 dollars.

Almost three years and no ****** review.

I did say that I was going to wait until they were properly-broken-in, didn't I?  And now, three years later, they're broken-in, alright.  And I mean that literally!

You see, sometime last summer, after two years of intense use, my trusty Green Sanuk Fur-Real Classics finally gave out on me, when the strap of material that divided the market- and home-bound piggies on my right foot separated from the footbed, rendering them (or at least Righty) unwearable.

So no more Green Sanuk Fur-Real Classics for me.  I will say, that in our two years together, they were a fine, fine, shoe, and served me well, even though I put them through hell, by doing such laborious things as. . .  walking around in them.  They were great flip-flops and received many compliments.  And even with the strap giving out in the end, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another pair--if only I didn't have a problem with buying the same thing twice.

But I've since moved on.

The Sanuk Tarzan.

While they lack the functionality of, say, the Reef Drams, they make up for it with sheer sex-appeal.  And they go great with my loincloth.

But don't bother looking for a pair of your own, no sir!  These babies are long OOP (that's "out-of-production," to you and me).

Anyway, that's just a mini-review.  Look for the full review sometime in 2009.

I've got a pair of Doc Martin sandals that I've worn every summer since 1995 (do they still make those?).  And what's funny, is I bought them at a shoe resale shop when I was a freshman in college... sounds disgusting that I bought "used shoes" but at the time, everyone was wearing them and people at my college were buying theirs at a resale shop... called Foot Prince... it's ridiculous that I even remember the name of the store... but since they were at a resale shop, I wonder how old they really are, and how many other feet have been in them.

My loyalty is to my feet, and my feet alone, Sir.

You know, the three pairs of Sanuks I've had, they've all been very cool, but they've all fallen apart.  And they don't seem to really have any gaudy ones anymore (and I obviously prefer my flip-flops to be gaudy as hell), so I figured I'd give some other brand a try.
