Title: Direct to Consumer 2005-2007
Post by: Paul on February 19, 2005, 03:35 PM
Well just in from the Fan Club....Hasbro is killing the 12 Inch and 3 3/4 inch lines after this spring for their crap-anime style 8 inch figures.

I just get back into Joes and they kill the line....be careful folks or I'll collect your favorite line too....

I reeeeeeeeeally hope this isn't a trend. How could Hasbro kill off two staples for something that is destined to fail!

The wisdom or lack thereof of the big H never ceases to amaze me....I was really looking forward to this year too, with all the 6 packs and comic sets...

I thought just the 12" line was dead.

Well, ****. I thought they had a good thing going with the comic 3-packs and the TRU 6-packs.
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Toys Thread

And with that, every step I took TOWARDS Joe I can now take 2 back.

Any love for the line I had is gone since it's not being supported anymore.  **** Hasbro and their ill-fated decisions.  You can't tell me the 3.75" line didn't do well last year, even with repaints/reshipments.

The 12" line was the anchor and it deserved at least being scaled back.  It's just not gonna last in the uber-competitive market that they were trying to compete in.  They didn't have anything beyond $1 store knock-off quality in comparison to Dragon or Sideshow.  They lost that war themselves.

To kill 3.75" though is stupid.  It's one of the only toylines I see relentlessly replenished...  To me they should've kept it running alongside the new scale, but whatever.  One less thing to be tempted by at least.

Post by: Ben on February 20, 2005, 10:05 AM
I'm beginning to think they're just killing 3 3/4" so the fans have nothing else to buy but the 8" ones. And when those fail (as they should) 3 3/4"will be back on the shelves faster than you'll ever get an apology from Hasbro.
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Toys Thread
Post by: Jesse James on February 21, 2005, 04:12 AM
Oh I have no DOUBT that's the plan.

Hasbro:  "OK, so we'll off the 12 inch and 3.75 inch G.I. Joe brands, that way the market we have is focused on one scale we wanna test out with this new Sigma 6 Cartoon for the G.I.  Joe license"

That's completely plausible (maybe not the exact wording, hehe) in my mind.  The 3.75" line was really not doing poorly at all...  12" is competing where it has no place, but like 12" SW figures they need to stick a fork in it obviously.

They don't want fan attention separated from this 8" line though,a nd I do believe it's doomed to failure, and when it does we'll see a resurgence of the 3.75" line at least, and perhaps the 12" line in a maybe more limited format (IE: aimed squarely towards collectors of the vintage line).  At least that's my opinion.

Those 8" figures suck though.  Hideous things they are.

Post by: Brian on February 22, 2005, 08:47 AM
I was quite surprised to read this this weekend.  Although I was initially excited to hear that there was a new GI Joe cartoon coming back, the figures look to be the suck.  Especially the fact that they are in an 8" scale, which doesn't make sense to me.  I was really surprised to see that they were putting the 3 3/4" (and 12", for that matter) lines on hiatus, which seems like an excellent ways to tick off collectors.  Parts of the Joe line have always been tempting (the comic packs in particular), because after SW, Joe was pretty big with my friends and I when I was a kid, but like Jesse mentioned earlier, this just makes me want to get further away from it.  Hopefully we don't see Hasbro pull the same stuff with the Star Wars line in the future.
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Toys Thread
Post by: Ben on February 22, 2005, 01:50 PM
I think if this Sigma Six nonsense was in the 6" scale, featured ML-level articulation, and used ARAH-styled uniforms, this would go over a lot better.

But it's one of those things you know is destined for failure, like WB's Loonatics.
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Toys Thread
Post by: Brian on February 22, 2005, 02:04 PM
I think you're exactly right HMI.  If they had gone the Legends-style, RAH appearance versions, people would probably be going crazy about how "cool" this line would be....aside from the fact that they are putting the 3 3/4" line on "hiatus", I don't think that would go over very well regardless.  I'll admit that I'm not as up on Joe news as others are, but to me that definitely seemed to come out of nowhere.
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Toys Thread
Post by: Ben on February 23, 2005, 12:27 AM
I know I'd buy every one of them if they were 6" and used RAH styled uniforms. I don't necessarily need or want 40 points of articulation, but it's still a nice touch.

Maybe another reason for the "hiatus" is that Hasbro doesn't want to compete with itself with Star Wars, since the basic figure's MSRP if $6.99, and the price of a Joe 2-pack is also $6.99.

Maybe once the ROTS line comes to a close in 2006, 3.75" will be back.

But that seems like a pretty ****** way to do business. And honestly, since Hasbro's putting all its eggs in the ROTS basket Star Wars-wise this year, this type of decision wouldn't shock me now.
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Toys Thread
Post by: Jesse James on February 23, 2005, 01:03 AM
MSRP is $5.99, but that's just splitting hairs...  I could see that being a reason...  The 3.75" Joe line outclassed Star Wars for many, many years, however I think Star Wars is much superior this year...   for once.

Be on the lookout for Ice Sabres and Quickstrikes at your friendly neighborhood Target.  I found them today.

Post by: Ben on March 11, 2005, 02:38 PM
Found a Quick Strike at Target, but didn't go for it.

I found wave 7 at Wal-Mart and got the packs I wanted from that wave- Snake Eyes/Swamp Rat, Bombstrike/Croc Master, and Gung-Ho/Cobra Viper. I thought about picking up Duke/Overkill, but Overkill didn't really look that great.

It's too bad this is the last series of 4" stuff for a while. Hasbro was really going somewhere with this line finally.  :-\

I was pretty underwhelmed by the pictures of the Imperial Procession and Winter operations TRU 6 packs.  The Crimson color is overused now.  The Winter set figures should be all white or off white IMO.  Why would you paint SJ with blue?  And I am sick of SE being everywhere.  He's my least favorite character.

I was able to find wave 7 finally.  I picked up Boobstrike/Croc Master at TRU and Gung Ho/Viper at WM.  I'm done with Joes for now unless I come across Bazooka/Torch.

Good to hear the 3 3/4 line is coming back, even though it will just be online.   The repainted Humvee might be worthwhile, but I'll pass on the comic three pack of Zartan/Zarana/CC in armor and the single Scrap Iron.  The packaging looks good for him, but the figure looks goofy to me.
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Toys Thread
Post by: Brian on April 21, 2005, 01:11 PM
I saw that this morning as well, and it is good to hear that the 3 3/4" line is going to continue...at least in some aspect.  I don't really collect Joe, but was into it a fair amount when I was younger, and the 3 3/4" line is what I knew and grew up with.  Anyways, I agree, I'm really digging that packaging on those first items...the Scrap Iron on card really harkens back to the 80s days, I like it.

Post by: Ben on April 27, 2005, 02:55 PM
I found two cases of single-packed VvV Joes at two different Dollar Generals in the past couple of days.

Sand Vipers, Tele-Vipers, Storm Shadow w/out Action Attack, an all-black Snake Eyes (not that cool 80s inspired one, however), an all-black Baroness (based on that horrid blue one), Ace, Stalker, Dusty, and Kamakura. Oh yeah, there's a Night Creeper too. :)

Best part is these are $2 a crack.

Master Collector (http://www.mastercollector.com/) has new pics of upcoming stuff, including the rest of the single packs and the next comic 3-pack that isn't the one we've already seen.  :D

I kinda dig Spirit, and a medic Viper is cool...  Mutt's, eh, and why isn't Junkyard mentioned really?

That isn't Scrap Iron in my book.  The 3-pack version is far superior.

And that Barrage guy I'm just not familiar with...

Interesting though...  The comic 3-pack looks cool with Flint and Tunnel rat.  May be a purchase there.  I nabbed the one with Firefly just because it sparked so many memories when I saw that near perfect Firefly figure...  He rocks!

I'll pick up the Spirit and possibly Mutt if his mask comes off.  I would have liked him to have a helmet.  I will probably buy the CG and Medi Viper also.  I really want that comic pack 76.  The Hawk and Flint blow away all other versions of both characters IMO.  Overall, I'm impressed by what Hasbro is doing.  I'll place some orders at the convention next month.

Need some help from Joe collectors.  I collected for a short time and have acculated roughly 100+ loose figures. Most from 2001-2003.  I plan on putting them on ebay and wondered if I should list them all seperately or list them as the two packs I received them as.

Anybody going this weekend?

I'm excited to see pics of the latest Comic Packs and the Un-Hiatus 3 3/4 line.

I ordered the Non-Attending Package, so I'll the Figures, I am just mad I'll have to pay 2nd-ary prices on the Vehicles.

I also saw the Imperial Procession and WInter Ops set at TRU. NOT THAT IMPRESSED.
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Toys Thread
Post by: Jesse James on June 23, 2005, 10:55 AM
I didn't realize you were a Joe fan Paul...

Is their con this weekend?

It's funny how a toy line, not even tied to a film or anything, has its own yearly con, haha.  :)

That Winter Ops set is terrible...  Had they done something where they took like Snowjob's body and put a Snake Eyes, Duke, Flint, etc. head on it, painted it in the classic cartoon style (and packed in just a white Snowjob figure), then that would've been a real Snow Ops set.  Try to pattern it after the cartoon, ya know?

The Imperial Procession is weird too...  I like the Baroness, and CC is ok looking...  The throne's lame though, as are the guard figures, and the accessories...  Just strange.

An Oktober Guard set would do well I think if you could get them all in one 6-pack...  I think another Cobra Trooper set (and a Snowserpent set) would go over well if done right also.

Joe is a tempting line at times, especially with all the retro stuff.

Post by: John C on June 23, 2005, 11:05 AM
I may have to drop by the con this weekend to check it out.  I've never been to a Joe Con before, so I might as well go since it's nearby.
The big problem I have with the TRU exclusive 6 packs is that the figures look nothing like the painted art on the package.  The greenshirt figures would have been much better if they wouldn't have had those goofy heads.  The Winter Ops set would have been better with the white Snow Job body on the figures instead of the blues and blacks.  The Anti Venom Lifeline would have been better if he looked like his artwork.  Sometimes I wonder just what the people at Hasbro are smoking.  They never execute things as well as they should with Joes or Star Wars.

Post by: Ben on June 23, 2005, 04:14 PM
I was really looking forward to the Imperial Procession set until I saw one in person, and all the figures were pink.

I'm not sure about the Winter Ops set. I think I'd rather save the money for the single-packs.
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Toys Thread
Post by: Jesse James on June 23, 2005, 06:09 PM
I agree totally on the Greenshirts John C.  Their heads are incredibly weird...  Not to mention that, and this maybe seems an odd reason to some (especially as a Joe complaint), but in the military I think goatees and beards are frowned upon unless you're told to grow one (as is sometimes the case in the Middle-East).

Weird reason to hate those headsculpts, but to me they were being rather goofy about giving everyone a 90's kinda update with the facial hair when the Greenshirts in the cartoon were really just regular looking army guys...  Young faces, no facial hair...  They looked like strict military.  They should've just done a variety of clean shaven guys and maybe one chick greenshirt (would've been neat I think) out of the 6 that used the original Scarlet's body or something.

And I don't know about you guys, but I'd sooner buy 6 guys that look like Snowjob with different heads than buy 6 guys I couldn't pick out of a lineup EXCEPT the Snowjob.  I mean, who the hell  is the transluscent guy even?  I don't recall a Joe equivalent to Zartan but, whatever.

TNI's coverage of the Joe Con. (http://afigures.com/g/?mode=album&album=2005_GIJoe_Heroes_In_Action+%2FOnline_G.I.Joe&start=0)

Lots of new single-packed figures here, like Major Bludd, Range Viper, Snow Serpent, Footloose, and Salvo.

Post by: Jesse James on June 25, 2005, 05:51 PM
Snowserpent looks great.  Almost identical to his original, right down to snowshoes and an AK.  That's sweet.

Major Blood, though not the greatest/cartoony enough for my taste, looks pretty good.  I like the Cobra Night Ops set.  People will go nuts for that.

I want to buy two of each of these single packs, yet I couldn't even afford the Wookiee Flyer when I saw it this week.

 :(

Then that awesome Cobra Night Ops set, the new HISS tank, the Dreadnok comic pack...

It's too bad Hasbro couldn't do this kind of work when the line was at retail. They probably wouldn't have had to switch to Sigma 6.

I didn't realize you were a Joe fan Paul...

Oh, my Joe Collection at its height exceeded my Star Wars collections (both vintage and modern) combined.

I sold the Flagg when my wife said I couldn't turn it into a "Coffee Table" at our first house...

The new stuff looks good, I ordered the MORAY from AMAZON on Saturday and it will be here on Wednesday.  Can't wait for that.

Sigma Six still looks like dreck.  I like the Cobra Night attack 6 pack and the Black Crimson Guards (wait that doesn't make sense).  The heavy weapons will be a wait and see and I will pass on the BATS.

The comic packs continue to be the highlight for me (except the devil's due one, that one is a PASS for me).  That Zartan is impressive and the Flint is "closer" to the Flint that I wanted in 1985.  I jones over that card art on the back for an entire ROAD trip my parents took us on, only to end up with GUMBY Head Flint...oh well, it will be good enough.

I am just glad they didn't kill the small joes.  Even if Online is the only place to get them.  The fun of the Hunt is gone, but so is the hassle.

Taking a look at some of the pics TNI has up from the GI Joe convention, it gets awfully tempting to start picking up some of these.  I really like the "new", although not really new, 3 3/4" line that is (I think) supposed to be online only.  I'm not a packaged collector, but the new packaging really reminds me of the GI Joe days of my youth.  Really had a lot of fun with those Joes back in the day.  It gets awfully tempting, even I know in my head I should know better ;).  Kind of neat though.

I got my TRU exclusive Moray Yesterday....Even though it isn't RED or Blue I like it.

It was always a favorite of mine back when it came out .  I had 2 Red ones, and 1 Night Force one.

I was going to try to get a Blue Deck Convention one as well, but I will probably just snag another Green Marbled one.

I found a guy on ebay that sells reproductions of the Stickers so I am going to just sticker it up as a Cobra Moray instead.

I also forgot how hard this thing was to put together..

New swag at HTS. (http://www.hasbrotoyshop.com/ProductsByBrand.htm?BR=520)

The shipping is ******* insane, based on reports in this (http://adctalk.com/index.php?showtopic=1994308&st=0&#entry15891189) thread at TNI.
Like I said in that link, I think I'll shop around. Maybe I'll look tomorrow and see what BBTS is charging per figure and if I'll save money. Though I'll probably just buy from BBTS. They've always treated me extremely well.

I went ahead and orderd from HTS (having had a good experience with my Star Wars Order).

I got a case of thenew figs(even though I LOATHE the new sculpt stuff) I like the packaging  and customs possibilities with these are pretty good.

I also snagged the Comic Sets and the Night Humvee.

I read on YoJOe.com that they limit figure purchases to 10 per.  Not a bad idea.

I got my TRU Moray in the mail Wednesday.  It is pretty cool.

Target is clearancing out their Joe stuff. Comic 3-packs for $8.48, 2-packs for $5 something, Ice Sabre and the like for around $13, and the Thunderwing for $20 and change.

Picked up a Venomization Chamber. I couldn't resist it.  :) I wanted to get the Joe and Cobra mechs, but they were gone already. Oh yeah, it was $8.48.

And I just remembered I forgot to send off my points for Storm Shadow Unmasked. Oop.

I'll have to visit Target and pick up that plane.  Thanks for the tip.  I haven't ordered anything from Hasbro yet, but I will grab both those comic packs.  The single figures aren't really interesting to me yet, but some of the ones shown at the con will be mine.

I got my Hasbro Toy Shop stuff yesterday....I didn't get to open it because my wife snagged them off the front porch and let my daughter wrapped them for my birthday.  Thank goodness it is tomorrow.  This will be the first time I've gotten Joes for my Birthday since 1984.  Sweet.

Presumably I got the Case and the 2 comic packs.  The Hummer is back ordered.  I'll post a mini review tomorrow afternoon.

Also Hasbro's website has the Night Watch set up but you can't order it yet.

I went there to get a case yesterday, but that was out of stock. So I'm thinking I'll get a couple Crimson Guards and the comic packs until more cases arrive.

Still haven't found that damn Moray. This takes much longer, and I'll have to order it from Amazon. This thing can't have had a very high production run.

I went with Amazon because I have NO faith in my local TRU's.  I'll do the same with the Night Watch too.

I've heard that the case was a big seller even after the price jumped $5 after the 8th.  Perhaps it will let hasbro know how many toys the collectors actually accounted for buying.

I scored a Moray Hydrofoil today. There was no tape on the box, which was Hasbro's gaffe, but after spending an hour putting it together, I'm glad to report I got every piece, though the steering wheel and lens didn't want to stay in place, and I had some trouble getting the long mount to hold in place. I packed away the wheel and lens since I didn't want to lose them.

I thought the marbelized plastic was going to look terrible, but it really does look like camoflague and I'm happy for that. I don't think I'll buy another to repaint, though. $40 is an awful lot for this thing.

I didn't apply the stickers either, since they're a little garish. Maybe I'll put some of the GI Joe logos on, but there's no way in hell I'm putting those flame decals on. Those look ridiculous.

I was glad to get the figures with it too. This is the first RAH Flint I've ever owned, plus Beach Head looks good in Night Force camo. Of course, I was a big fan of Night Force, so I'm a little biased.  :)

Now I'm going to go load this thing up with RAH figures and stare at it for a while.  ;D

I agree on most of your Moray points.  The paint job really isn't too bad in person now that I've seen it, but they should have painted it black or with some Night Force insignia if they were going to give us those figures with it. I am going to try to score some Cobra decals for it because I do want to use it for them due to the lack of good Cobra vehicles around.  I am thinking about buying the Night Ops Humvee and using it for Cobra as well.  I will order that and a Night Watch set when they are both available at Hasbro's site.  I've heard that the Night Watch set will not be at brick and mortar stores, but we won't know until it's released.

I received a bunch of stuff today. First, I finally got the Spearhead and Max I won on ebay last week. I liked this figure as a kid. Now if I could score the Night Force version, that'd be great.

Second, I got a bunch of Funskool figures from Smalljoes. Flint v1, Storm Shadow v2, Deep Six v2, Airtight v1, and four Night Vipers. I haven't seen carded Joes like this in some time, so I'm just ogling them now. I thought about getting extras for MOC, but I knew ahead of time the cardstock is like two sheets of tissue paper pressed together, so I'm going to open these. I went there to get a squad of Night Vipers, but I couldn't pass up an opportunity to get Storm Shadow and Deep Six since most that I find are missing some accessories. Flint and Airtight I bought 'just because' they were there.  ;)

I'm not liking that the backpack for the Vipers is orange, but I don't have to put them on or anything. And I'm sure Funskool used some lead paint on this things.

I think I'll get more of these, especially Scrap Iron, Crimson Guard Immortals, and more Night Vipers.  :) Especially since they're only $4 a piece.

I'm hoping Hasbro reissues that next, though with them going to the DTC line, I'm not sure they'll be willing to do vehicle reissues.

Then again, they're doing that pretty big ROCC thing, and that's a new mold, so I don't see why they wouldn't do vehicle reissues. I've bought most of the classic RAH vehicles they've done, and I'm not a hardcore collector.

The Hover Craft w/Cutter was one of my favs too Scott.  I got it for my birthday the year it came out...  It was that "big gift", ya know?  Loved that thing...  My first dog, Shena, chewed up Cutter too which irked me but it was all she ever chewed.

I loved that ship though.  It floated ok...  Had that cool little sled and the pointless mini-bike.  I always had Cutter and Shipwreck man it while the Joes debarked for combat from it...

GIJ is one of those thigns I"m really borderline considering getting into.  If my ship came in, I'd be all over RAH collecting and customizing in that genre.

That hovercraft and Cutter set was my favorite as a kid as well.  It was the only "big" vehicle I ever had in that line, and like Jesse, I got it for my birthday the year it came out too.  It became the "Falcon" of my Joe line, acting as a way to carry the whole crew around to different play locations ;).  I still have it, packed up in our basement, although it is in less than mint condition after years of play from myself and my younger brother.  I remember putting that thing in the bathtub as soon as it was all put together to see if it could float...pretty decent.  I've also been on the fence with collecting Joes from time to time, and the new DTC line looks pretty cool.  I think if I was being realistic about it, I'd enjoy collecting the vintage figures/line more than the modern stuff, although there is some cool stuff there too.  I think I still have most of my old Joes, although very few if any of the weapons.  That and Duke is broken in half, Darth Maul style :).  The '82-'86ish time frame were the main years for me, and my favorite figures overall.  I can remember almost having a heart attack as a kid when I finally came across that 1985 Snake Eyes (v2) figure.  By far my favorite Joe toy, my favorite character, and I always liked that "version/outfit" the best.  I never understood why he had a mouth showing through though, because it wasn't like that on the cartoon :P.

I've priced on eBay a couple of times the run of figures from 82-87 and I think if I won the lottery or something I'd go buy it.  I collected Joes longer than I did any other Toy Line I believe (even SW)

The Vehicles and Playsets and articulation all kicked SW ass at the time.  Not too mention the cartoon every morning before or after school

I received this in my inbox this morning.

EDITORIAL - DTC GI JOE PRODUCT
==============================

by Corey Stinson
Owner - SMALLJOES.COM

Back in February the bad news was dropped on us - the GI JOE 3 3/4" line
was being put on "hiatus", which most people understood to mean "canceled".
Little did we know that last minute adjustments and new plans were
flying around at Hasbro about the true future of 3 3/4" GI JOE product.

Jump ahead to present - Hasbro is now marketing 3 3/4" GI JOE product
in a direct-to-consumer model.  Mass retailers have been bypassed, which
(at least in some respects) will allow Hasbro more design latitude toward
actual product presentation, packaging, quality, and price point.  As a
result of this new latitude we are now seeing the GI JOE product that this
writer has personally be waiting for since 1994.  New product of the
highest collector-oriented quality!  Awesome new figures with great
sculpts, great concepts full of nostalgia value, and loads of accessories
and gear that actually go with the figure, rather than just being something
thrown in the package as "added value."  The most interesting new GI JOE
vehicles ever designed are coming your way this fall.

At this year's GI JOE convention we were treated to a display of yet more
upcoming product and the quality is staggering.  I can find simply nothing
to complain about.  My GI JOE 2005 convention diary, including many high
resolution pictures of upcoming GI JOE product, can be found here:

http://smalljoes.com/features/conv2005

So, where am I going with this?  Speaking purely as a collector - trying
to avoid sounding sanctimonious, or coming from a point of conflict of
interest - this is a golden moment for GI JOE 3 3/4" collectors.  The
product we've all been asking for and dreaming about for so long is here.

Because of the direct-to-consumer marketing model and the collector-
oriented nature of these offerings, it is now up to _us_ to show Hasbro
that we as a consumer base can support a product line of this nature.
This is a new marketing strategy for Hasbro, and they are going out on
the proverbial limb with these offerings.

Much of this product was probably designed and tooled in the fourth quarter
of 2004, before the direct-to-consumer marketing approach was conceived.
In fact, it's likely that most of this new product was probably intended
for the line that would follow-up Valor vs. Venom.  Apparently, mass
retailers weren't on board with GI JOE any more, and we're fortunate to
have an opportunity to buy the product under this new paradigm.  I mention
this because it was easier for Hasbro to justify this collector-focused
marketing experiment when much of the product was already designed and
tooled (read: significant develop expensese already incurred).  However,
at some point (probably 1st quarter of 2006) Hasbro will have to decide
if we, the collector consumer base, can financially support ongoing
development of totally new product of this caliber.

At the risk of being repetitive - this is an important time for the
collector, a time to show Hasbro that when offered high quality,
collector-oriented GI JOE 3 3/4" product, that we will put our money
where our mouth is and actually buy it, rather than pick and choose
only certain items, only army build to try to impress friends, and complain
relentlessly on the discussion boards about minutia.

We have some of the best new GI JOE 3 3/4" product ever conceived coming
our way now through the end of 2005.  Are we ready to kick our collective,
collecting support of 3 3/4" GI JOE into high gear, or will we have a
laissez-faire attitude toward it?  What happens in 2006 and beyond is
entirely up to us.  Thanks for reading.

Regards,
Corey

---------------------------------------
I can understand the owner of a small store that sells these things has a vested interest in seeing the line continue, but I also think he has a good point. The product hasn't been this good since 1989, and it's kind of a shame Hasbro has to sell it this way to do it right.

I'm beginning to think GI Joe and MOTU might supplant SW as my main collecting interest, since I'm really tired of SW, and all these upcoming exclusives just aren't that great. Meanwhile, GI Joe is getting really awesome, and hopefully with enough support it can continue this way for a long time. And I really want to complete my vintage MOTU collection since the money I'd spend on some substandard SW stuff would be better spent elsewhere. I think that for the cost of the Lava Reflection Obi-Wan and Anakin, I could get a carded MOTU figure.

I'll still collect SW in some capacity, but not nearly what it is now.

I enjoyed my case so much, I ordered a couple extra Crimson Guards and an extra Mutt.

I finally put my Night Force Hummer together too.  I like it alot.  I just wish Rollbar had a "Molded" head instead of a "painted" head, he looks to pasty with painted skin.  But not really much to complain about.

I have ordered all my stuff exclusively from the Hasbro site.  I won't do it from Brian's Toys since there is no reason to pay DOUBLE for something available from the "Source".  I'd consider going with Smalljoes if they also had some other stuff I was looking for (which they frequently do).

I need most of that stuff.  I don't have my Night Watch set yet, but it's on the way.  I hope they end up putting wave 6 VvV on their site.  I missed out on most of it.  I want a Torch/Bazooka pack most of all.  It would also be nice if they took that Bazooka torso and gave us new versions of Flash and Grand Slam.

I found Sigma 6 Snake Eyes and Duke at my local TRU yesterday.

I almost bought Snake Eyes. :-[

I thought these things were destined to fail, but ****, they're awesome. I wish the Deluxe ones weren't fifteen bucks. These things are pretty incredible, and I guess Hasbro should be applauded for trying to freshen the Joe property and still making the small Joes available.

I can't imagine how much cash they laid out to get them.  :o

All I can say is it takes a lot of cash to rebuild a GI Joe collection.  Then it's impossible to stop army building and expanding the collection beyond what I had as a child.

I really liked my Star Wars toys when I was a kid but in the end the 1982-1986 GI Joe toys I had were my favorites.

I stopped collecting GI Joe toys in 1986 when I was 11 and then sold them all in 1988.  I did get back into toy collecting many different toy lines in late 1992 and that included the last couple of years of ARAH.  In 1997 and 1998 I remember seeing the GI Joe repaints but for some reason I passed completely.

Between 2000 and 2004 I bought the new 2-packs and then GI Joe VS Cobra/Spy Troops/VVV but for some reason I still didn't pursue the old stuff.

My interest in the original 3 3/4" figures and toys was finally rekindled last year when I ran across the TRU Cobra Infantry set and comic 3-packs.  That was the beginning of my recollection of 1982-1986 and everything else I didn't have as a kid.  Then I bought most of the 1987-1991 toys and a few of the 1992-1998 things that I missed.

Earlier this year I took a break from the ARAH line but then I attended the GI Joe Convention in Minneapolis and I caught the army building and collecting bug big time.

Now, I'm in the process of setting up my GI Joe collection and enjoying all these cool toys.

Sounds good.  I'll take it off your hands.  Thanks.   :D  It sounds like you've gone through a lot to rebuild that Joe collection.  I also collected from 82-86 like yourself.  Those were the best years IMO.  I kept most of my Joes fortunately.  I only sold off the 1982 stuff which doesn't bother me because I have 1983 versions of the originals I like, except for Grand Slam.  I'll pick one up eventually.
The 1997 TRU stuff would have brought me back, but the Stars and Stripes set and the Commando set killed things for me when I saw we were not getting the 1985 SE and the actual originals shown in the prototype photos.  They gave us crap.  I did come back to Joes when the 2000 RAH two packs came out.  I've been back since and now I am waiting to see if Hasbro Direct gives us more than two waves of figures.  I have not seen the Sigma Six in person, but I won't be collecting that line.  I may buy them in a few years for my son if they are still around.

There is a list posted at yojoe.com about the third wave of Hasbro Direct.  The ones I'm interested in are Grand Slam, the Cobra Trooper and Lowlight if that list is accurate.  I'll buy two Grand Slams and make one into Flash.  Two interesting Comic packs are also listed,  the DD fans choice #16 with Cover Girl, Spirit and Hannibal, and Marvel Issue 26 with SE, Stalker and SS possibly in their Vietnam gear.
There should be a wave four also because we've heard about new sculpts for Falcon and Lady Jaye.

An endcap of these has been at our local Target for a couple of weeks now, and they actually seem to be selling pretty well.  I have to admit, I was almost tempted to pick up a Snake-Eyes as well.  They do seem like pretty neat "toys" as far as that goes, with all the accessories, and the packaging being able to be turned into a "foot locker" of sorts.  Plus, I've always been a fan of Snake-Eyes.  At $15, I held off, but they did look kind of neat.  We're thinking about picking up a couple for our nephews for Christmas or birthday, I think they'd have fun with them.

Pictures of DTC wave 3 are on ebay.  Brians Toys is selling them.  Larger pictures were posted at adctalk.com.  They are all made from previously used parts, but I am fine with that.  I like all of the figures except for the Cobra Soldier.  I will buy one each of Lowlight, Med Alert and the SAW Viper.  I may or may not buy Monkey Wrench.  I will buy three of Grand Slam.  He is my favorite figure from the wave.  One will be kept as is, one will be turned into a silver pads version and one will be turned into Flash by painting the gloves and boots brown and the knee pads and elbow pads red.

I'm wondering if had these figures been available instead of most of the VvV range, if 3.75" Joes would still be at retail. This stuff is better than most (if not all) the GvC-Spy Troops-VvV crap.

Though I am glad to see Hasbro still make small Joes available regardless of the retailer's unwillingness to buy them.

Meaning the Sigma Six stuff IA?

I'm not a fan...  I like the packaging, it's probably the most innovative ever, and the gear's fantastic.  The sculpts just cannot do a thing for me though...  To me, an improved 3.75" line would've been a MUCH better received line, but that's just my opinion...  S6 seems to be slow selling so far but it's early in the top season.

I like the 3.75" line they're moving with now...  It's better.  Needs improved articulation I think, like a standard improvement to the line overall not just wrists here or boots there.  There's distinct collector effort there though.

The S6 packaging is so freaking great though.  I'd have killed for that kinda stuff with the 3.75" line when I was a kid.

The only way I can see myself buying Sigma 6 is if they are still around five years from now and my son wants them.  I am not interested in them at all.  They look OK, but they are nothing special IMO.

I haven't really been collecting Joe anymore, although some of the newer DTC stuff looks pretty nice.  I saw this pic up at 16bit.com (http://www.16bit.com/) today, and thought it looked pretty good: Cobra Pic (http://www.16bit.com/newspics05/1104cobra-full.jpg)
This line really reminds me of the vintage Joes, in both style and packaging.  Some nice stuff there to be sure.  If I had the money/space, I'd be even more tempted.

Eh, I was all set to take a look at the Cobra Trooper you posted and low and behold you can't even link to images.  I'll just go check it out elsewhere I guess just because now...

I love the MonkeyWrench I saw recently.  It is a shame it cna't be found outside the US but at the same time, it'd be a bigger shame if it couldn't be found at all...  With what Hasbro's showing for the line they really are improving it.  I like seeing leaps like that for Star Wars too like we saw for a lot of 2005...  I'm saddened to see steps backwards on some figures in 2006.  Looks like Joe is just full steam ahead while Star Wars is in its 1 step forward and 2 back mode already.

After work today I stopped into the Rt 17 Paramus NJ TRU looking for the new BBI Weapons Sets (didn't find any though :( ) and found a pair of DTC Joes hidden behind the shelfbound Sigma Six figures.

I thought they were BBI sets at first as all I saw were small cards stuck behind the Sigma Six stuff, but when I pulled them out...

I took them to the nearest bar-code scanner:

They are in the system. A little pricey for a single figure, but when you factor in shipping from online stores, it kinda evens out.

I called Rasputin (a local collector and friend who I met through JoeCustoms) to see if he wanted them (he didn't) and he theorized that they may have been returned by someone and that I should ask an employee to bring out more from the back. I found an employee and asked if there were any more of them in the back and he said the 2 in my hand were all that were left as the ones put out last night or this morning sold pretty quickly.

Looks like Joe just may be returning to retail at TRU in some capacity.

Also of note, new JLU 3pks and ML Apocalypse Series figures were also present so it's time to start hitting your local TRUs again!

Judging by this thread at TNI (http://adctalk.com/index.php?showtopic=2010568) it looks like small Joes are going to return to shelves as TRU exclusives.

Clearly, I'll have to find them and buy them to believe it, but hopefully it's true. I wonder why there are no SKUs for comic packs or vehicles. Maybe TRU isn't getting those right now.

Between this, Star Wars, and the upcoming Neo G1 line, I just as well forward my paychecks to Hasbro.  ::)

I hit the Rt17 Paramus TRU this afternoon after work, and sure enough, DTC stuff on the shelves and pegs!

There were only 2 different items so far, but the stock guy said that they will be resetting the section to accommodate the new line by next week. He said there were going to be new Joes at various price points up to $44.99 or $49.99 (I'm guessing this would be the R.O.C.C.)

DTC B.A.T. Attack:

Found the wave 3 comic packs at TRU this weekend. I wasn't too interested in the Vietnam pack, but I did get the one with Spirit, Cover Girl, and Hannibal.

Because HasbroToyShop.com had a discount I ordered a DTC Low Light (one of my favorite classic Joes) and the comic 3-pack with Stalker, Snake Eyes and Stormshadow from Vietnam.

I'm kind of disappointed in all 4 of the figures.

Low Light, although he looks pretty good and I like the updated sniper rifle, has new arm joints that I don't like.  How long has the Joe line been using this new peg elbow instead of the riveted elbow and swivel bicep?  I picked up some late-wave 2-packs at retail that I didn't open (and they're boxed away right now) and I didn't think they'd changed to this new style?  He also has no neck to speak of which makes it hard to pose him prone behind his rifle.  Granted, not a lot of Joes look great that way but LL suffers from a short neck post and a high collar on his jacket.

Other than that, the paint apps are great, the uniform has a very vintage feel to it and the removable goggles are cool.  I just kind of like some of the VvV and Spy Troops figs better I guess.

As for the 3-pack, I don't like some of these figures either.  In general I like the vintage style bodies but I do like the new articulated wrists on the new figs.  Stalker is pretty good overall and the possibly the best of the set.  I'd have preferred a ball joint neck post though.  Good paint and the head sculpt is nice.

Snake Eyes just misses and it's more because of his hands than anything.  Only one hand (left) is really good for holding any accessories which kind of sucks.  I do love the detailed paint on the boonie hat and the shadowed eyes is a brilliant move.  I'd forgotten he carried the M-60 in the comic and it seems odd to think of Snake carrying something so big and unwieldy.  Second best in the 3-pack.

Stormshadow...I hate this figure.  The head sculpt sucks, I don't like the tank top and his hands are terrible.  He can't really hold anything in his right hand and the left barely works for his bow.  The bow looks nice, though, as do the arrows, but the quiver I don't like.  It feels kind of fragile and the shape of the sling is such that you can't really sling it over his back when he has his web gear on.  The web gear, although nice on some figures, doesn't work for me on Stormshadow.  I was really disappointed in this one and he was kind of the reason I bought the set.

I also thought they could have done a better job matching up Stalker's weapon to that in the comic.  They didn't do bad with Storm and Snake but the puny M16 that Stalker has is nothing compared to the night-scoped and silenced model shown in the comic.

I also ran into some DTC figures at TRU a week ago and the Monkey Wrench fig looked good as did the Cobra Trooper and Grand Slam.  I didn't buy them and after seeing Low Light I don't know if I'll bother.  Too bad.  With the new cards I was thinking about picking up this line but now, eh.

Since some of these are showing at TRU I may get some of the 3-packs...  The one with Covergirl looks nice, as does the Vietnam one.  The Sigma Six stuff isn't selling around here, so I'm glad to hear basics are back to some extent.

I was wanting to pick up some of those single-carded figures too, I hope they're out and about.

They're at TRU, sporadically. Mine has only received a few cases of singles from waves 2 and 3, and a bunch of cases of wave 3 comic packs. They also have vehicles and 6-packs. I've seen the Viper Lockdown 6-pack, the Ice Sabre, and the new HISS at my local TRU, though I've heard of the Night Ops Humvee and the earlier 6-packs showing up at other TRUs.

I see them out here often enough.  I honestly need to pick up some of these new figures...  They're almost too good to pass.  The Snowserpant was one of my favorites so I gotta get the new one.

The 3 packs are outstanding too...  I just gotta get extra $$$ for things like this.  tough to justify when SW is draining the wallet.

GI Joe amazes me...

When you look at the greatness that is this line from its inception to today, even with the lows, this is probably the greatest boy's toys line ever if you ask me.  I know we're on a Star Wars board and there'd be plenty of people to pipe in and claim otherwise, but at the end of the day Star Wars does NOT have the popularity required to generate a yearly convention, much less to have Hasbro's ear enough to get exclusives for said conventions among the other perks Hasbro delivers with GI Joe.

Sigma Six seems like it's not doing badly, but man the 3.75" line just keeps on rocking.  GI Joe is a line that if I were rich I'd be knee deep in it. :)
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Toys Thread
Post by: Ben on July 1, 2006, 03:09 AM
I'm betting the 3.75" line isn't going to last much longer. Maybe a couple more series of DTC stuff, but everything's been done in that scale. I assume we'll find out during this weekend's con.

I guess that's why Sigma Six has two different scales, and neither are 3.75". I suppose  Hasbro could have done some of the Sigma Six stuff in a 3.75" scale instead of 2.5", but such is Hasbro.

What really really sucks about my G.I.Joe collecting history is this. I lived 31 years of my life in New Orleans. Most of that time was spent collecting G.I.Joes. For the last couple of years Ive dreamed of a Joe convention coming to thown.

Last year Hurricane Katrina displaced me here to Tennessee, shortly there after, the G.I.Joe Convention in New Orleans was announced. But with no way to get back there in time, I missed it.

Now doesn't that really suck! >:(

Saw the new GI Joe Sigma 6 2.5 Mission sets at TRU. Broke down and picked up the Mission set with Duke's Quad. These are actually a lot cooler than I thought! Duke's Quad is neat, and the set also includes a pretty cool Cobra B.A.T.

The included "Mission Manual" is awesome as well, has a lot of info. The Duke and B.A.T. figures remind me a lot of the MASK toy line that was around in the 80's. All in all I give the "Desert Blast Quad Mission Set" The HunterofThePegs Seal Of Approval.

That's a good question. I haven't seen any preorders anywhere, and HTS has a glacier pace when it comes to stocking stuff. They might have them up before Christmas.

The wave 4 comics packs are out there, as I just picked up Lady Jaye and the Cobra Troopers today at TRU, but the singles are nowhere in sight. I received my two Hot Topic Land Adventurer figures today and they're awesome!  The box art is is really cool and has a very vintage feel to it.

They used the same head sculpt as they did for the 40th Anniversary figures.  The ******* isn't as thick as some of the Fan Club repro figs but it's better than a couple of the retail figs they put out like the Meijer figures and the Wal-Mart Deep Sea Diver.

The KFG hands rock, the Luger is a nice change to the standard Lebel revolver and another set of short black boots is a good thing.  Standard camo fatigues and AT dog tag.  The shoulder holster is more of a rubbery material than some of the earlier repro holsters that were harder plastic.

Overall the figure looks great.  One final note on the *******, mine have more of a dark brown look to them rather than black.   So standing on the shelf next to my Fan Club repro Commander and the Foreign Adventurer he looks just enough different to not be someones twin.

Depends..1982 RAH Joes didn't have swivel elbows (until 83).  Only a few of the modern (2001 and later) Joes have had swivel wrists and fewer still had movable ankles.

The wrists and ankles are a definate for the Super Articulation to me. So in my eyes No all 3 3/4 Joes aren't SA.   I'm not asking for Micro-Man style Articulation, just more ability to hold their weapons (that are mostly replaced by Marauder Inc. weapons).

In all reality, there won't be any 3 3/4 Joe Product next year anyway.

The Land Adventurer sold out pretty quick here.  There are 2 Urban Outfitters here but they are over in Dallas, I will have to make the trek though, these are great.  I have not even gotten mine out of the box yet.  It is the only toy I would consider leaving in the box, but I am sure he'll get freed if they release his buddy...

If they made all 3 it would be like having Breaker, Rock N Roll and Snowjob in 12 in form. Sorta.

I've been wondering if they'll do a Sea Adventurer.  I think the GI Joe club still has their exclusive from last year available but I'd have to check the club store.

If somone did a black Commander that would be cool.

The Club's exclusive 12" membership figure this year is a red haired Arctic Adventurer using the foriegn head.  He'll come with a t-shirt and AT boxer shorts.  They're also doing an accessory set which will include a white AT arctic jacket, cargo pants, short white boots, rifle, shoulder holster, revolver and AT dog tag.

This year's convention 12" set is AT themed again and there's a special 25th anniversary RAH set but no details on those are out yet.
