Saga '02-'04 / Next Jabba's Palace figure: Poll results are in!
« on: January 23, 2003, 06:52 AM »
We've got a new (now archived) poll up on the JediDefender main page:
Which Jabba's Palace denizen would you like to see made into a figure next?
UPDATED:  Now with the final poll results!

Since there's several pretty obscure characters in there that you may not be familiar with solely by name, we thought we'd help you all out with a visual reference guide here:

  • J'Quille  (Whipid spy)  8 votes (7.6%) - last place

  • BG-J38  (Maintenance Droid & champion holochess player)  9 votes (8.5%) - 6th place

  • Yarna d'al' Gargan  (Jabba's FAT dancer)  18 votes (17.1%) - 2nd place

  • Sergeant Doallyn  (Chewie tosses this poor fella against the wall)  16 votes (16.2%) - 3rd place (way to go Brad!  ;))

  • Hermi Odle  (Jabba's slob of a henchman)  29 votes (27.6%) - THE WINNER!

  • Rappertunie  (Rebo Band's harmonica player)  13 votes (12.3%) - 4th place

  • Klaatu (Palace version)  12 votes (11.4%) - 5th place
Now that you're more familiar with your Palace figure candidates, swing back over to our main page and perform your civic duty by casting your vote for who you think Hasbro should turn into a 4" hunk of plastic next!

So...what are you waiting for?  Go vote now!   ;D

Saga '02-'04 / Dodonna AND Antilles win Fan Choice! It's a miracle!!
« on: January 21, 2003, 01:54 PM »
Holy bajeezus!  We're going to be getting a General Dodonna and a Captain Antilles!  That is unbelievably awesome - especially for us "old schoolers"!  I think it was an incredibly cool move on Hasbro's part to decide to issue both of these ANH Rebels, even though technically Antilles won by 9 votes.

If there indeed were some type of voting irregularities, which I still contend was likely the case despite Hasbro's explanation, all I've got to say is GOOD JOB to the fella who calculated out a virtual TIE, and I wish you all the best in future polls as well.  I saw someone mention this elsewhere - perhaps next time we can get a five way tie at 20% each and get ALL 5 of the choices!   :)

If the poll was legit, then a big high five to all of the fellow fans and collectors out there who caused this "miracle of figure birth" to come about!  Though I wanted Dodonna to win and voted for him, I really wanted both of these figures to be made, so I'm in heaven right now!

The question is whether they'll be released together in a 2-pack, or on separate cards.  I tend to think that Hasbro might find a way of putting them in a "Rebel Heroes" 2-pack, just to keep the "Fan Choice Figure(s)" award label in one place.  And just as an FYI, these two characters wear virtually identical outfits in ANH, other than their coats and helmet, so there shouldn't be any RFT rehashes here.

I'm curious which coat Dodonna will come with - the long trenchcoat from the end ceremony scene, or the more regular looking flight jacket that he's got on throughout the final battle scene (don't recall which he was wearing in the planning scene).  I'd prefer the trenchcoat myself, especially since it will differentiate him a little more from the Antilles figure.

Well, however the whole thing went down, I'm one happy dude 'cause I got the best of both worlds!  Unfortunately, now we've got to play the waiting game for well over a year before we get these two, but I suppose I can be patient.  At least we'll get that cool looking Concept Stormtrooper in the meantime to tide us over...

Credit goes to Real Scooby for pointing out this picture and link.  I loved the games, relatively enjoyed the first movie, and dig Angelina - she's the perfect Lara Croft.  Looking forward to seeing what's in store for the second go round.  Check out the other 6 or 7 pictures here:

Saga '02-'04 / Super Pooper Anakin with Swoop Bike...
« on: January 18, 2003, 01:53 AM »
You've seen the new boxed pix of Anakin's Swoop by now, so what do you think?

I think the swoop looks quite nice - very movie accurate, aside from one thing: that stupid seat belt!  I realize what it's purpose is obviously, but none of the other Speeder Bikes or Swoops have had them, and their respective riders stayed mounted for the most part with no problems.  Oh well, I guess it's nothing a pair of scissors or an exacto knife can't fix...

As for the Anakin figure, probably not even worth wasting my time commenting on that craptastic super-duper-pooper-trooper!  I mean, he is in the pooping action stance, is he not?  Pretty similar to the recent Deluxe Force Flipping Anakin.  Then there's the obvious omission of Anakin's cloak, which he's wearing on his Swoop ride towards his date with his Darkside destiny.  Not to mention the lightsaber (possibly dedicated?) and the always useful "Lightsaber Slashing Attack" for your late evening Swoop cruise around the desert.  Ugh...  This one's just brutal.  Why even put the figure in there in the first place if they're going to go about it like this...?

But like I said, the Swoop looks excellent!   :)

As far as retail distribution goes, these are where all of our favorite Star Wars figure haunts stand in regards to total number of stores in the U.S.:

  • Wal-Mart = over 2,800 stores
  • K-Mart = around 1,500 stores
  • KB Toys = over 1,300 stores
  • Target = 1,148 stores
  • Toys 'R' Us = 686 stores
  • Disneyland/World = exactly 2 stores (but you already knew that, I'm sure)
Some surprising numbers in there, at least to me.  Like I mentioned elsewhere, these stores really vary by region - tons of Target stores out here in Southern California, but very few Wal-Marts.  Vice versa I'm sure for back East and down South.  So we should all try to help eachother out around here to "spread the wealth!"   :)

Saga '02-'04 / Jedi Padawan 2-packs...
« on: January 15, 2003, 06:28 PM »
Though the "kid" figures are not usually my favorites, when I heard they'd be releasing a couple Padawan 2-packs, I at least had hoped they'd go with the cooler looking alien kids.  Hasbro didn't disappoint here!  Excellent choices.

They might be a bit shorter than your average figure, but getting two, nicely detailed figures in these sets is some pretty good bang-for-the-buck!  It's very cool that all 3 Padawans can hold their lightsabers 2-handed (why can't the regular Jedi figures do this for cryin' out loud?).  The helmets are a nice touch, but will be extra cool if by chance they are removable, which they just might be since they're listed as accessories to the Padawan figures at the Hasbro site.

I would've really liked to see some training remotes in there as well, but apparently Hasbro's dead-set on never giving us any of these in the 4" figure line.  I'm sure this is due to safety restrictions, but if the thing's the size of a freakin' pea, what's the big deal if a kid did munch one down?  It's not like the tiny little thing would even get lodged in their throat!

I'm really looking forward to the Ashla and Jempa set.  Excellent detailing with these two!  The Chian figure is equally nice, but his accompanying Yoda Master still doesn't quite look up to snuff to me.  Still not a very good AOTC likeness in the face, and his waist articulation looks pretty bad, though I realize it's necessary to sit in his hover chair, which is also included (finally).

All in all, big thumbs up for the 3 Padawans.   8)   Another Yoda...blah... :-\

JD Sports Forum! / Alright SPORTS fans, name your teams!
« on: January 14, 2003, 07:27 PM »
Just curious who out there is a sports fan, and who your teams are that you root for (any and all sports are welcome here)...

As for me, I'm a big sports nut, as is my wife.  I was born and raised, and still currently reside here in SoCal (both in L.A. and Orange County/Anaheim), so you'll see my allegiances based primarily on that.  I unfortunately can't help it if my teams are all better than yours, so please don't flame me for that (*cough*Scott*cough*)!   ;D   ;)

NBA:
Lakers (lifelong RABID fan - Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Shaq, Kobe, and of course Vlade... 'nuff said)   8)
Clippers (local team, gotta cheer the poor doofs on. Someday...)   :-[

NFL:
Raiders (lifelong fan, even before they ever moved down from Oakland long ago)   >:(
Rams (my hometown team growin' up - still a BIG fan despite their move)   ???
Packers (just because my wife LOVES them - don't ask me why)   :-*

MLB: (Baseball for the abbreviationally challenged)
Angels (lifelong diehard fan - not much to cheer for 'til this year though)   :D
Dodgers (lifelong diehard fan - what's goin' on lately here?)   ::)

NHL: (reduced to only a fairweather fan of late)
Kings (the only local team for a quite a while, not to mention that Gretzky fella)   :'(
Ducks (see Clippers, plus that Kariya/Selanne line was fun to watch)   :(

MLS:
Galaxy (not that big a soccer fan really, but they're the "World" Champs, so I had to add 'em in)   ;)

WNBA:
Sparks (see Galaxy)   ;)

Collegiate:
UCLA (lifelong diehard fan, wife went there, sister school to mine)   :)
UCSB (Santa Barbara) - (my former stomping grounds, but not too big at the national level)   :P

Olympics:
Team U.S.A. all the way baby!   8)
South Korea (I lived there for the last 3 years of High School)

Women's Tennis:
Anna Kournikova - She's WAY hot!   :-*

Billiards:
Jeanette Lee (The Black Widow) - See Anna Kournikova.   :-*

Hmm, looks like I went off on a little tangent at the end there, which would better be served elsewhere, in a separate, future thread...

So, how 'bout you?  Who do you root for, if anyone?  And if you generally despise sports altogether, that's totally cool too - I realize that they're not really for everyone...

Watto's Junk Yard / K-mart still in trouble - closing MORE stores...
« on: January 14, 2003, 05:53 PM »
Well, maybe Rainman was right: K-mart sucks.

Or at least their financial planners and business operations managers do.  They just announced that they're still struggling to emerge from last year's bankruptcy, and therefore will be cutting another 35,000 jobs and 326 stores!  You can read all about it right here at CNN.  For a complete listing of the stores affected, click here.

So hopefully that favorite K-mart of yours that you hit while you're out on your figure hunts ain't about to bite the dust!  Only a couple left anywhere around me in L.A.  I just hope Hasbro doesn't do anything stupid like give them an exclusive this year (like the rumored Slave 1/Jango Pilot set)!

Watto's Junk Yard / What do you do (job, student)?
« on: January 13, 2003, 03:02 PM »
Just curious what all you Jedi Defender forum surfers out there do in the real world in terms of your profession...

As for me, I do Music Royalties Auditing.  I work for a firm that specializes in auditing the major record companies (Sony, Universal, Warner Bros., Capitol, EMI, etc.) on behalf of many of your favorite singers, bands, songwriters, and musicians.  Basically, we just scope out the record company's books, find all of the money that they're hiding or have just underpaid to the respective artist, put a report together with our findings, submit it, and get the artist a FAT chunk of change in settlement compensation (as if they're not all rich enough already - but who's counting).

We haven't done anything Star Wars related yet, but we were in negotiations to pick up John Williams as one of our clients last year, and it seemed to be a done deal, but I believe things fell through at the very last minute - likely due to the already huge backlog of work that we had at the time.  Though it hasn't come to fruition yet, from what I've heard, the partners at my firm are still trying to work out a deal with his people.  Now that would be totally sweet if I could audit his stuff!  Talk about some job satisfaction...

So if any of you know someone in the music business, and/or who's had a record hit the Billboard charts and wants to get back some of what is rightfully theirs, give me a shout!

Saga '02-'04 / Rebel Technician accessory set
« on: January 12, 2003, 09:26 AM »
I've got to say that the Rebel Tech figure itself is pretty weak - just some rehashed figure parts moshed together to make this guy, but I'll take him anyways.  But with these Target accessory sets, it's really the accessories that make or break the set (ala the still HTF Scout Trooper set).  There's a few decent and unique pieces included with this one, in the various ladders and the batons.  I trust Hasbro was wise enough to verify that the ladders actually fit up against the various Rebel starfighters properly...

Certainly not all this set could've been, but so far these Target sets have generally been less than exciting, so the expectations have decreased somewhat now that we have an idea of Hasbro's goal with these.  Bummer...

Saga '02-'04 / New green A-Wing...
« on: January 12, 2003, 09:13 AM »
Assuming you found your way over to TPU to check out the new picture, what do you think of the green A-Wing?  Looks pretty spiffy to me, in an EU kind of way.  The sculpt was already great to begin with, and the green deco looks pretty good.  It appears to be coming in another nice window box similar to most of the previous vehicles of late.  It comes with a pack-in pilot figure which is always a plus.  It's hard to tell from the picture if it's an exact rehash of the version from the Rebel Pilot Cinema Scene 3-pack, but knowing Hasbro, I'm sure it is.

Bottom line is that it's another new vehicle (sorta), so I'm excited.  Though I'd prefer Hasbro focus its resources on polishing off the few remaining vehicles which have yet to appear in the modern era line first (Cloud Car, Sandcrawler, Jabba's Barge, Sith Infiltrator, etc.)

Watto's Junk Yard / What else do you collect?
« on: January 11, 2003, 06:27 AM »
We all obviously collect Star Wars stuff (since you're here reading this post), but what else do you all (and your significant others) collect?  As for me, I also collect:
  • "Greatest Hits"/"Best of" CD's (about 800 from the 50's to present)
  • DVD's (see DVD thread)
  • Baseball Cards (1950's - 1990ish)
  • Coins (mostly just domestic)
  • HO Model Railroading stuff
I think that's about it for me...

As for my wife Patty, she doesn't collect squat, and it drives me NUTS!  Everybody should collect something!  I really wish she'd pick a hobby or collection, as it would make it a ton easier for me to randomly buy her stuff on my own for her birthdays, Christmas, etc.  She's the only person in either of our families who doesn't collect anything.  Weirdo... (but don't tell her I called her that)!  Oh well, I guess she can keep pretending that she collects Star Wars figures, since she winds up pimping me so much of the new stuff before I ever manage to find it in the stores!  What a gal...

Modern Classifieds / Need Disney Star Tours droids?
« on: January 11, 2003, 03:12 AM »
Hey everyone -
Just thought I'd mention that I drop by Disneyland every two or three weeks, so if anyone's looking for any of the Star Tours droids for retail ($10.78 w/ tax) plus shipping, I'd be happy to help you out!  Disneyland can run a little light on the MINT cards, so if you're looking for that, it might take a little while longer to find some nice pieces.  But if you're looking for anything less than mint, I can probably hook you up right away!  Just give me a hollar if you're interested!

Same goes for the Target accessory packs.  I've heard they're pretty rare in some parts of the country still (or in Canada), but they are warming the pegs here in So Cal in mass abundance!  So if you need any of these as well, just let me know and I'll hook you up (again, $10 retail, plus shipping).  It would be very nice to clear some shelf space around here for some new product...

Anyone...?!

Watto's Junk Yard / Buying a New Computer?
« on: December 22, 2002, 12:36 AM »
Hey everybody!  I'm looking to buy a new computer pretty soon, since the one we've currently got at home is about 6 years dated now (P2 266 Mhz).  We've got a Compaq right now, and have generally been pretty happy with it, but are open to exploring some new options.  I'm inclined to stick with either Compaq, HP, Dell, or Gateway.

What do you all have and are you happy with it?  Any computer geeks (no offense) out there who have some good insight on what I should be looking for?  What brand names do you most recommend?  How 'bout monitors as well?

Thanks for any input - I greatly appreciate it!
