Title: Tron: Legacy
Post by: Brian on July 23, 2010, 07:16 PM
Not sure if this had its own thread already or not, but the first full trailer was shown at SDCC, and is on Yahoo Movies. (http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/tron-legacy.html?showVideo=1#movTitle)

Old Flynn and young Flynn!!! I hope this does as well as I think.

This is gonna tank.  Tron is not familiar enough with most people to make it popular.  Hell, I saw the original twice in the theater, played the games, and had the figures, but the film was so dull that I don't even remember the story.

This will be "Watchmen" all over again.  A huge opening, fan driven weekend, and then a huge drop off and eventual flop.

I never saw the original in the theater, but caught it on some movie channel a few months ago and was like WTF happened?  The story was boring and the action was honestly really, really slow.  Not to mention the super cheesy special effects.   But I'm not going to bag those simply because it was the early 80's and a completely new technology.

I agree that the fan base for this movie probably isn't very big and could be a potential disaster.  But on the flip side, it could also be a sleeper hit...although I'm leaning more towards the former.

For some reason I loved Tron as a kid and I too caught it on HD Movies a few weeks ago...man is it terrible.  The graphics for their day were totally ground breaking but are badly dated.  This new one looks OK.

Little known fact, Tron Guy lives a few miles away from me...not sure how he feels about the new Tron

I'm kind of in the same boat as the rest of you. I remember thinking it was pretty cool as a kid as well, and wanting the toys (had a friend that had some) - but I also re-watched it within the past couple years and thought it was pretty boring.  The new version's trailer looks spiffy, hopefully the movie will be as well.

You should go over and ask him.

I don't even remember the story, that's how lame it is.  Did Flynn get out if the computer at the end?  And the technology should have nothing to do with the story.  Maybe I would have better memories of that film if it hadn't come out in the mighty summer of 1982...

Blade Runner
Wrath of Kahn

I've been debating about answering this one but I've got say, Tron is one of my favorite movies of all time! Its the reason I choose to become a software developer. It was my first look at how and were programmers work. I use to live in the local arcade that looked a lot like Flynn's in the movie. I would love to see that kind of arcade return someday. Also, this is the only movie that does a great job at using video games as a subject. Video games have been made into movies but the subject of video games in general has been very rarely used. The Fred Savage movie "The Wizard" sucked. This is also the first movie to use CG heavily thoughout the move. It paved the way for the effect used in "The Last Starfighter" and eventually "Toy Story". Sure the CG can be done in about a week by one programmer but that goes to show how far we've come. Most of the CG in that movie wasn't even CG. It was handdrawn animation but it flows so nicely into this unique environment. It's really something we never saw before. The story has some neat ideas about programs looking like their creators and a kind of religious aspect the Programs have. The Users are considered gods because they created the Programs. The Users sent in Programs to take down the OS. This is a total precursor of viruses and malware. Its very forward thinking. Granted the story isn't action oriented and can be slow at times but so is the first half of Star Wars. Besides it is made up by Cindy Morgan in a skin tight outfit! Finally, the only reason this movie is being made is because of the huge fan reaction from ComicCon. If this does well, Disney will do more viral marketing like this. I'm hoping it does since there is a promise of a huge E-ticket Tron ride at Disneyland to fix it's crappy Tomorrowland.

I finally got around to watching the Road Warrior a few weeks ago.  I just plain old didn't get the appeal.  It was ok....but not great.

Great new trailer. As I remember, the plot is suppost to be like Conrad's Heart of Darkness.

I just like that it's an actual sequel and not a "re-imagining" AKA rip-off.

And it's ALWAYS good to see Bruce "The ORIGINAL StarKiller" Beefcakener getting some work again. (That's a B5 reference for those of you unfamiliar with the best sci-fi series ever on TV :) )

I've been following the development of this for a while and hope it does well. It helps, to me at least that Daft  Punk, a great techno style group/duo is doing the soundtrack. The trailers are visually amazing and I'm hoping the story is well crafted. Probably not an 'oscar' movie but should be tons of fun. The toys are out and are kinda so-so. They have a light-up feature and the deluxe figs have some kind of 'image fancy doo-hickey' technology that projects the characters face onto its helmet and moves as it 'speaks'. That is pretty cool but limited.

He was on NCIS as a Navy Admiral the other day.

The effects are incredible.

I very rarely go to the movies but this time I went. This was a great movie! The effects were great and the story was good. I saw it in 2D.  This movie would make a great theme park ride. I'm in love with Wild. I can't wait to see her in Cowboys vs Aliens. I can't wait for the sequal.

I saw this on Christmas eve on the IMAX 3D screen and EP Center and it was very cool. The effects were great and the soundtrack was rockin'. The only effects issue were of course the KLU/young Jeff Bridges shots. Some were spot on, mostly when he wasn't talking, but a lot of the time really stood out as CG. I'd give the movie a solid 4 out of 5.
Title: Re: Tron: Legacy

I always put those KLU/young Jeff Bridges shots as being what KLU looks like in his world. His world's graphics resolution weren't quite up to par yet to make him look realistic. He still used his creator's voice. So the imprefections fit in perfectly.

I saw it today in IMAX/3D and thought it was good.

I've just got back from seeing this terrible mess of a movie. The thing is it could have been so much worse so I can't complain too much.

I just got back from seeing this in 3D.  I thought it was really, really good.  I appreciated the throwbacks to the original, but the buddy I went with thought it was good all on it's own and he had no problem understanding anything even though he hadn't seen the original.

All in all, a good movie and I was glad I spent the cash to see it.

FInally got to see this with my son on Tuesday. Hadn't planned to see the 3D version but the times I found didn't specify which version and since it didn't cost TOO much more, we went. I was a little worried going in but I loved it and so did my son. THe visuals were outstanding especially in 3D. I thought the story worked pretty well with logical nods to the original IMHO.
and of course the Daft Punk soundtrack was totally rocking. We both walked out very pleased. But as with any niche movies, not everyone will like it and that is OK.
This will DEF be a dvd I buy when it comes out!

Well Tron didn't do as well as Disney hoped it would do in theaters. Disney was hoping for a Avatar-type box office for its opening weekend. It did ok though. It seems the Disneyland ride has been put on hold however the animated series on Disney XD is still going forward. Hopefully the DVD sales and the show will make Disney green light that ride and the sequal.

On the brighter side, there will be no Black Hole movie.  ;)

I agree that is good news, otherwise they would have inevitably ruined what was a stellar motion picture sci-fi epic of its day.

They would have recruited actors about half the age of the original cast, turned VINCENT and Maximillian into CGI abominations, and completely re-written a perfectly serviceable script with none of the targedy or pathos of the original.

Also, one of the best soundtracks ever.

Went & saw TRON last nite, really enjoyed it. Loved the nods to the original, the toys & posters & the Coleco handheld Quaterback game & yes the Black Hole.  ;D
The CGI Jeff Bridges was very good, well done. Will be getting the dvd when it's released.

I got to see it too.  I don't think I've seen the original for over 20 years, so maybe that helped, but I really enjoyed the movie.  The nods were pretty cool indeed.

Yum.

We recently got a Blu Ray player and I could not resist getting the 5-disc Blu Ray pack for Tron.

It comes with:

-Tron: Legacy 3D Blu Ray
-Tron: Legacy 2D Blu Ray
-Original Tron on Blu Ray
-Tron: Legacy DVD
-Tron: Legacy Digital Copy

Amazon has it for $52.

I picked up the regular dvd a couple weeks ago and have watched it twice. It's really grown on me and love the movie even more now. Lots of subtle nods to the original one. I noticed a similarity between Flynn's speech on the beginning of the movie to Clu's speech towards the end as he describes both times how 'our destiny is in/out there'. PLus the soundtrack really jams even more now! Long live the User!
