The Vintage Collection / Re: Drop in Collector Interest/Figures?
« on: March 19, 2010, 02:02 PM »

Eventually the Legends figures not selling as quickly is going to catch up with Hasbro.

it already has.  they have a current promo right now, yes it is more kiddie-intended, but when you buy a role play toy - basically anyof them that have an MSRP $19.99+, you get 3 free Saga Legends figures - and you don't even have to pay shipping to get them!

One could argue that it is a way to "hook" kiddies that only like the role play stuff into buying more action figures, and I would say that is a strong argument that probably has some merit, but I honestly think this was a way for Hasbro to unload some of these figures.  I mailed in for min last week after I bought the Clone Commander Blaster - and my half serious prediction of the figures I would be receiving was "Saese, Plo, and... Saese".  I honestly think I will be getting the first two - perhaps the third will be Obi or Mynock Han.  One thing is for certain, I will be completely knocked off my rocker if I get one clone or any "trooper" other than a SBD.

And in regards to your statement

So using that ever so basic math, wouldn't it make sense to sell figures that are selling out or at a much greater percentage than the other two facets of the line?
.

Hypothetical numbers here - if it costs Hasbro $0.50 to make a CW line figure and sold them for the upcoming MSRP of $6.99 - then that nets them $5.49 in profits to divy out between them and retail.  $5.49 * 450,000 units sold, like in your example, nets them an insane number of profits $2470500.  For clarification purposes here I know they are not making that much per figure, and perhaps it costs more to manufacture, I am just using numbers.

I believe Legends would follow a similar example to the above - I just still don't think they have number that they should be producing down enough - but they still make great profit off of them.

If it costs Hasbro $1.00 to make a Vintage line figure - higher costs due to articulation, brand new tooling, likeness rights, lower production runs, etc. and sold them for the upcoming MSRP of $7.99 - then that nets them $6.99 in profits.  $6.99 * 90,000 units sold, again using your numbers, nets them $629000 - roughly 1/4th of what was made under the CW line.

Again those numbers were wayyyyy off interms of reality - but I think that is what hasbro is looking at

Hot **** on the Magnaguard!

So they are sticking an ANH sandtrooper in this wave?

kinda surprised the AT-AT driver isn't in there somewhere.  I guess he could fit into the Legends line...

edit: also kinda disappointed that MeruMeru (the Wookie), or however you spell his name,  isn't in there.  But I guess I shoulda known since the "no all new figure" vibe is out there.

when these first hit at retail all I was seeing was red eyed movie War Machines at all three of the big box stores - so the blue was rarer from what I was seeing.  Then I went to Target earlier this week and they received new shipments and all they had were tons of the blue eyed version.

If you look at the back of the card you'll notice that it doesn't even have a particular color - the War Machine on the back of the card has blank eyes and chest.  It makes me wonder if we might see it both ways in the movie...

Anyway, this "variant" to me doesn't seem like much of an intended chase style variant where there is only a limited release of one version - I kind of equate it too the Rise of Cobra, Paris Pursuit Snake Eyes, with black or white Timber.  Both ended up being plentiful.

whoa - Dllr and Plourr already shipped out to me from EE - nice.   :)

I opened up one of the Bespin Guards that I bought and I can't get his hat to "stick" on for the life of me.  Is this common?  Is the hat just supposed to rest on the top of his head?

Probably not as exciting as Wedge, but a new Aurra Sing confirmed for next year!

wow, I posted that as a question to be asked here on this site but then after seeing the new one for the CW line at TF - I wasn't really interested anymore in seeing a new one - I thought the CW one was pretty dang sweet and figured I would pick it up.  Well, I won't now!   ;D

I am personally all caught up with everything that has been released this year - I have purchased just about one of everything, if not more in regards to a select few army building type figures - so I am not really effected by anything going on at the moment.

But I will say something about Target here and their availability of the "Legacy" line.  I have 2 Targets in my area.  The "main" Target has been sold out of "Legacy" figures for a month now - pretty close to the same situation at the other Target (It has been less than 1 month since they have been completely sold out of all their Legacy figures - but they are sold out now).

Now, what does Target do to fix the situation, fill the pegs?  No.  Why, I don't know - perhaps there are no figures to be shipped in the distribution center.  However, this could also be because of another issue.  A common practice I see at Target is for the employees just to make sure that every peg is filled.  When there is a empty peg they scan it and check the warehouse to see if there is any product in the back to fill it - when there isn't they just "flex" it out because they don't want to make management angry at the end of the night during the dept walkthru.  So, in response, every time I go into Target now, I make it a habit to just stop and take a second if I have the time and put SW product on their appropriate pegs to clean it up a bit, and hope that someone will continue to take notice of the missing product and address the issue.

I guess another reason I am doing this is in part to help the line.  Hasbro says "Legacy" figures aren't selling well - I disagree.  Get the product out there and it will sell.

Ok, I had the chance to go look - here is what I came up with:

This is part 1 of 4 in the story arc
In this part Plourr briefly talks about how her family was murdered but doesn't go into great detail.  She sees someone whom she believes responsible, the Grand Duke, and calls him a "murdering bastard".  The Grand Duke also makes mention of the family being murdered by saying "they herded the royal family and slaughtered them like cattle".

The real description of the slaughter of Plourr's family/brother isn't mentioned until the end of the third as a cliff hanger to the 4th part, and then immediately discussed in part 4.

So there is that, but here could be the real "ringer":

Count Rial Pernon - the final page of this comic ends with him saying the following in response to Wedge questioning who he is:

Quote
I am her second cousin.  We grew up together.  I do admit, I am a little disappointed in her reaction.  You would think she would be happier to see her future husband...

So perhaps Walmart has a problem with "kissing cousins" and they don't want to portray a bad image?

@McMetal - apparently you are not familiar with the Sinead O'Connoer SNL incident...    lol   :P

@Jeff - I have been reading these comics lately and I honestly don't think that Plour's background, in the manner in which you speak, wasn't even addressed until several issues later.  I will try and remember to check this out - I keep forgettitng.

Part of me is wondering if this "excuse" isn't just an excuse to not sell it.  What I mean is, from what I see locally for me, last time around the WM exclusive Rogue packs didn't sell well.  Maybe WM put its mighty foot down and said we aren't taking it on the chin again?  Afterall, to me atleast, this pack is less exciting than the two Rogues offered in the last pack.

hopefully before the coupon expires!  though I am betting it won't be...

Thought I would post here that I ended up purchasing my son a Clone Commander Blaster.  The Target I went to had them tagged for the price of the regular blasters so they honored that price for me.  I didn't even have to say anything, they just said go up to the register and we will give it to you for that price and as I walked up to the register they called up front.

Anyway, since it was over $20 I was able to use a $5 off coupon too.

And finally, to the point of my post, I just mailed away for my 3 free Saga Legends figures since I purchased this blaster.  So I ended up paying like $16-18 for the blaster, and now I get 3 free figures on top of that - awesome.

Though I am going to post my prediction now of the figures I am going to get:  Saese, Plo, and...  Saese!  I will update when they arrive   :P
