Toy Reviews / New JD Review: Gragra (Mos Espa Vendor)
« on: December 22, 2006, 02:42 AM »
When you need Chuba's, you need this freak...

Clicky Button, Read Review!

So that brings us to this week's review...  A little later but with the holidays and my own computer problems this week you just have to accept these things. ;)  I took a scalpel to Gragra and I have to say she's one of, if not the best figure of the "End-Boo" wave...  Great sculpting, great articulation (for what she is), super poseability for her head which is kind of key...  Nice accessories too.  Top it off with the sculpting and paint, and she really turned out to be a dandy in the line.  Check out the review to see where Hasbro could've gotten us a little more for our buck, but really this is the level of quality the line's current price should reflect in general.

Check out the review, and share...  We're all about sharing folks.  Seriously.

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: Rep Been
« on: December 7, 2006, 02:44 AM »
Sometimes reviews are tough to get through for me...  Mostly because I'm tired, I have a life outside of this site (as we all do, outside this hobby at large), and then sometimes it's just the figure is like watching paint dry...  Senators are sometimes cool figures to review, don't get me wrong, but there are some that I feel like just skipping and Rep Been fell into that file.

Clicky & Read Away!

So here we are in the End-Boo wave, and Rep Been's up for review...  He's not Hasbro's best foot forward, though he has some admirable traits.  As a statue he looks ok, he's not bad set dressing, but since he is pretty much a statue I feel Hasbro shorted you, me, and anyone else who bought this figure by not giving us a little something more than a stick.

I think a cool base or piece of the "Sacred Place" scenery would've been neat and heightened the coolness of the figure.  There's definitely ways to spice up the "Senator" figures though...  Blasters helped Meena Tills and her Gran cohort...  Hasbro has some options there I think that go beyond a simple blaster or stick though.

The figure's sculpt and paint are pretty sharp though...  If you're not totally averse to buying Gungan figures, he does look nice standing with Boss Nass...  I just don't know if $7 is a price everyone will want to shell out on this figure.

Customs Community and Group Projects / Customs Chop Shop Wrap-Up
« on: December 4, 2006, 04:16 AM »
As per the front page guys, we've got a new feature we're hoping to have run semi-routinely here at JediDefender.com...  It's our new Custom Chop Shop Wrap-Up (say that 5 times fast, yikes!)

Clicky to Check It Out!

The thanks for the button there go to one of our two graphics gurus here at JD, Rob (Brad being the other).

Our feature is just going to be a wrap-up and highlight of the hobby...  Sometimes we may look at something fromt he past, sometimes something recent or very current...  it all just depends, but it's a great way to look at the news around customizing.

While I kicked it off tonight, our staffer Ryan will be handling the feature at least some of the time if not most of the time, so it'll be nice to set more eyes on the fine work around the forums here, and kudos to all the customizers featured this week and in the future articles!

Modern Classifieds / Senate Pods 4 Sale!
« on: November 15, 2006, 12:11 AM »
Title pretty much says it all...  I have 4 Senate Pods from the Skirmish In The Senate Battle Pack that I'd like to sell in one lot for $20 + shipping.  A fine way to display your dull senator figures, or something nice for Palpatine to throw at Yoda.

Anyone interested?

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: C-3PO (With Ewok Throne)
« on: October 26, 2006, 03:14 AM »

Clicky Button, Ready Review!

So here we are at the end of the initial wave of Endor figures...  But there are more to come, rest assured.

But with this last figure, I think it's probably the best value in the whole wave...  C-3PO (With Ewok Throne) is easily a GOOD buy at $7.  You get a large accessory, a partially new sculpt for a figure, and it's tough to deny that the fans have wanted this figure for so long now.

Hasbro took the ROTS 3PO sculpt and beefed it up in the articulation department for certain.  New legs make this the first sitting protocol droid and a nice effort on Hasbro's part.  My gripes with the figure were few and far between.  I think they could give 3PO a bit more poseability at the arms if they'd try, but the legs are a great start at least...  And the throne is fantastic to say the least.

Hasbro delivered a figure fans will love, and this is the BEST classic trilogy 3PO on the market, hands down.  The MMC version was it till now, and that's a long wait if you ask me.  But he's here now, and I think he's a figure worth having a couple of for all your scenes.

Add to that, the fact that this 3PO also has removable limbs and head...  A carryover from the ROTS figure.  The legs aren't removable however, but the fact his arms and head pop off I believe adds playvalue to the toy.  A good effort overall on Hasbro's part, so my hat's off tot hem on this one.  It's pretty great.

Toy Reviews / Marauder Blastech E-11 & Beret
« on: October 23, 2006, 11:35 PM »
I'm breaking away from a figure review because I was recently given a couple Marauder Inc. accessories by a friend to give my thoughts on here at JediDefender.com.  My opinion doesn't reflect the opinion of the site here, this isn't in any "official" capacity a part of my duties here at the site, I simply am giving a little bit of my thoughts/feelings on the accessories Marauder Inc. is putting out on the market for 1:18-ish scale collectors (GI Joe, X-Treme Detail, Elite Force, Star Wars, Pirates of the Carribean, etc.).

First up I'm going to take a look at the above accessory of a "Modified British Sterling SMG"...  Or in Star Wars terms, a Blastech E-11 Blaster Carbine.

The guys at Marauder seemed to think Hasbro just hadn't done a good enough job with the Imperial Blaster so they decided to beef it up a bit.  Did Hasbro win or Marauder?  Well, I've always felt Hasbro's blaster was pretty good but there was definite need for improvement...  Most noteably a trigger guard is lacking on Hasbro's weapon...   Can Marauder up the ante?

PROS & CONS

-Sculpt...  Marauder's sculpt of the E-11 is certainly quite spiffy.  The details like the pistol grip for instance are markedly superior on the Marauder E-11 compared to Hasbro's.  You'll notice right off the bat the raised bumps on the Marauder handle compared to the smooth finished handle of the Hasbro weapon.  The difference is different enough to catch my attention straight away and it's the kind of extra sculpting effort Hasbro bailed on.

Another little difference I noticed are the raised and recessed portions of the Marauder Blaster are sharper and more realistic.  For instance the chamber where, on a real Sterling, the spent cartidge is ejected from the barrel of the weapon, is sunk in on the Marauder weapon while it's less noticeable on the Hasbro weapon...  This is a pretty distinct difference.

Other small details include the spring mechanism on the back barrel portion of the gun...  On Hasbro's sculpt it is simply smooth and undetailed, but on Marauder's the coiling is sculpted into the weapon.  Same goes for the top "fin" piece of the barrel...  There is little "hole" detailing sculpted into it while the Hasbro weapon lacks that.

The biggie though is the inclusion of a trigger and trigger guard on Marauder's weapon...  The big detractor to the Hasbro sculpt was always the lack of a trigger guard as all the weapons seen in the films had the guard included.  Hasbro removed the guard to fit older styled hands that lacked separately sculpted trigger fingers.  Marauder Inc. ups the quality with a seemingly sturdy trigger guard that hasn't broke as I have put it into figure's hands, and seems very high quality.  It adds a lot of realism to the accessory overall.

-Decoration...  Marauder's stuff seems to come (at least what I bought) molded in black plastic.  It's plain, and I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the "shine" to it.  That said, some Hasbro stuff has the same shine as well...  It's better than getting something molded in awkward colors as well which happens from time to time.

The plain black plastic is ok, I just think Marauder would do better if they could get it to turn out in a "dull" tone rather than with some shine to it.

-Features...  Two features on the Marauder weapon are unique to this gun that the Hasbro sculpt lacks completely.  The Marauder E-11 has a folding stock that WORKS, as well as having small holes sculpted on to allow for adding a thread sling for the gun.

The folding stock is one of the surprises for sure and fans will probably be really happy to have this feature, let me tell you.  The feature isn't without flaw though, unfortunately.  The stock swings back easily and locks in place in the forward position as well, quite easily.

The stock however is a bit bulky and noticeable.  For fans that demand 100% accuracy the additional bulk of the stock may be bothersome to them.  Then again so would no trigger guard on the Hasbro gun, right?  :)  The other issue though is that the stock doesn't unfold 100% as it should.  It swings back, but there is a shoulder rest piece that is not moveable, that should swing down, turning the Carbine into more of a rifle (just as the real British Sterling SMG was).  I'd have been FLOOOOORED had the stock moved at each part instead of simply one.  I have swinging stocks on some German MP40's for my military figures I collect, but the inability for them to completely fold/unfold as the real weapon does has always bothered me and takes away from the novelty of the feature.

That said, I think most people will enjoy the feature for what it is, and may pick this gun up just to have a couple that feature this.   For me though, I actually like the inclusion of the loops for adding a thread sling even more!  To me that's a cool extra as I do think slings look sharp on weapons in this scale, especially on non-Imperial figures using the weapon.  Handing some slinged ones out to Rebels in your diorama can make them look like they stole and customized some of the weapons.  I think that's a major plus.

-Price...  The price is a tough thing to judge with the Marauder Inc. weapons...  A lot of the thought-process on this depends on your financial status I think, and how you feel about collecting in general...

For me, the debate comes down to this;  Do you want to pay $X extra to outfit your figures with something you think they'll look cooler with than what Hasbro gave you?  That's a tough question to answer I think, unless you've got money to blow on it without thinking about that kind of stuff.  I, unfortunately, do not have that luxury.

The Marauder E-11 is $1.00 each...  There are also sets you can buy more I believe, which is kind of cool if you get a break on price there.  $1 is pricey for an accessory I think since I can buy boxes of Hasbro parts at Toy Shows for usually fairly cheap.  And if you're outfitting 100 Stormtroopers...  Well holy ****.  $100 for blasters for them is not a tempting thought since if you're me, you already blew a LOT of $$$ on the figures themselves.

That said, $1 for one, or a handful, isn't too bad...  It's going to really depend how you feel about spending $1 extra to make your already $7 figure "nicer".  Me, I'm cheap, but I still want some of these guns for figures I have, haha.

OVERALL

So that's my little review of the Marauder Inc. Modified Sterling or Blastech E-11 accessory.  I really find the company's ideas interesting at the very least, and if they get into actually making more sci-fi doo-dads like perhaps crates, packs, and especially the less often seen weapons of Star Wars, I think I'm going to be compelled to buy into them.

As it is I think the E-11 is worth having a handful of...  They have a set of 12 for $9.99 I believe.  That's like 2 free, less than $1 each...  Not bad.  You can outfit rebels with them if you want, or if you've got a modest Imperial army they can get them.  They're cool.

There is one thing I'd suggest, and that's for Marauder to, instead of making the stock moveable on this, try making a single "extended stock" version that is in the COMPLETE unfolded position for people who don't care for the bulkier functional stock that doesn't unfold completely.  If they did unfolded ones I'd be in on a dozen of those at least.

If Marauder keeps up with the Sci-Fi line but starts tackling the various Sandtrooper rifles (which Hasbro makes too flimsy), Dengar's rifle, IG-88's rifle, the Sniper Rifle from Battlefront (who wouldn't buy that thing in bulk?), and other weapons of that ilk, I'm definitely in on those...  Or taking it a step further, how about sci-fi crates and barrels?  Funky hex-shaped storage crates and the like would go a long way...  Or chairs?  The IMperial Conference chairs from the Death Star anyone?  Or simple Destroyer Bridge chairs with maybe a small computer console?

Fans would eat that stuff up if Marauder Inc. can offer it for $1 or $2 a piece...

The E-11 is a nice step forward into the Star Wars realm for them.  I just hope they take a bigger step soon to satiate the collector-demand for "set pieces" and weapons Hasbro truly hasn't done well yet like the Sandtrooper's rifle(s) and such.  That'll be when the collectors come out of the woodwork I think. :)

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: Moff Jerjerrod
« on: October 5, 2006, 02:07 AM »

Clicky the button to read.

So this review of the "Endor Wave" rolls on and we're taking a look this week at probably the dullest of the wave...  That's not to say that he isn't a figure people wanted though.  Moff Jerjerrod was one of the Imperials that made many people's wishlists it seemed...  So did Hasbro do him justice?

Well, in short I don't believe they did...  In a recent Q&A it was asked by us here at JD, why exactly did you sculpt the face with a sneer, and the body with a wide leg stance in somewhat of an action pose?  Moff Jerjerrod did none of these things in the film.  He stood there, he took some **** from his superiors, he cowered a bit, but that was it.  Oh and he kneeled some.

So Hasbro saw fit to beef up the figure with a more interesting look...  I'm disappointed.  Hasbro's creative license with figures is cook when it's fleshing out what Garindan's head looks like under that hood...  Cool ****.  Or what Greedo's holster looks like...  Very neat.

But when they get fancy with a figure just because he's "too dull" for them, I have a problem with that...  Moff Jerjerrod was the PERFECT opportunity for Hasbro to make a single, fairly poseable (add some knees) Imp. Officer sculpt that is GENERIC.  Jerjerrod screams "generic".  People would've bought it in droves had it had a neutral sculpt in every way, and some extra joints at the knees.  Instant army builder for death star dioramas, instant custom fodder...

Hell Hasbro, you could've re-released him cast in black with different colors of hair and just said he's the vintage style "Imperial Commander" figure.  Slap a new head on it and you've got an even better army builder...

Anyway, read the full review...  Jerjerrod is unfortunately a flop to me, and one we'll most likely never see again.  I'd be amazed if they revisited him anyway.  I am a little dismayed they still think to go tot he "action pose" and stuff from time to time.  Didn't 2002 teach you anything guys?  Yech!

They can't all be winners folks, and this is proof positive of that.  :-\

30th Anniversary Collection / Target Exclusive Order 66 2-Packs
« on: October 3, 2006, 03:59 AM »
So let the wishful thinking begin...  Target is listing "Order 66 2-packs" as per our news story on the front page...  So what could these be?

This is the kind of thing that I think could really be neat.  The product info is 087-06-0884 - Order 66 2-pack - Price $12.99, and $12.99 seems just right as well for two figures, but what figures are we talking about here?  I mean I wouldn't mind a crack at Bly again with the right paintjob, or could we finally see an accurate Gree with a Yoda figure?

I'm kinda "in" on those despite repacked Jedi snuck in.  Though I do think these could be cooler than I'm imagining.

But what else could these be?  Maybe I'm not being very imaginative in thinking of it being Jedi & Clones...

Thoughts(s)?

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: Hem Dazon
« on: August 17, 2006, 01:17 AM »
This week we're going to wrap up the Tatooine Wave with an (as usual) in-depth review of the first alien you see in the Cantina sequeince...

Clicky button to ready review...

The review for Hem was a pretty pleasant one overall on my end of things...  I don't know if I'm growing used to it or...  wait, screw that, of course I'm not growing used to it, I hate the fact this figure lacks knee joints.  Yes, Hem Dazon falls prey to Hasbro's lack of "fun" this year by also being completely left out in the cold on knee articulation.

Why Hasbro?  Come on guys, get with the program...

That said, the figure has a lot to love...  The arm articulation is quite acceptable, the holster is nifty, the bandoleir accessory is a wonderful plus (and adds to the figure aesthetically), the "look" of the outfit is definitely able fit in with the 70's looks of some of the Cantina aliens but the legs/arms, and his general shape (especially the legs) make him something completely alien looking and help him to stand out from the other more human shaped aliens.

That's cool...

The figure wound up winning me over, much like Garindan did, despite my initial apprehension at early photos of Hem Dazon.  The leg articulation will be a disappointment forever and always rank up there in my "Cons" portions but Hem had a lot more to love than hate, so read on for the whole review to see why he's a worthy purchase...

Now if we could just please get Hasbro to make figures AT LEAST up to the quality of the 2004/05 POTC Cantina Wave, we'd be in business for all glowing reviews of their wares. :)  Come on Hasbro you KNOW you want to do it.

Hell I'd do without ball/socket shoulders for ball/socket knees.  How about you?

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: Sandtrooper
« on: August 9, 2006, 05:04 AM »
Yes, it's time for your faithful bitcher to gush with joy at something Hasbro made...  for once.

Clicky Button, Ready Review

This week I'm looking at the Imperial Sandtrooper from the "Tatooine Wave", as it may be the single best army builder of 2006...  It has it all and then some, and fans of the classic films can rejoice that they're not buying a ROTS Clone.

The figure comes out swinging as it's something a bit more than a simple resculpt...  Hasbro ups the anty on a figure you paid $10 for in 2004, by giving him...  well, more ****.

The VOTC Stormtrooper got a little retooling here and there for holding his gear on his person, and what a pile of gear he has.  The accessories alone are a massive improvement and for less money than you paid for this figure the first time.  That's nice.

The sculpt is great, the articulation better...  It's fantastic to pose, and the black pauldron means you can build a hefty army of Stormtrooper grunts for your field forces.

Read the full review...  It's mostly praise but I do cite the flaws when I see them, same as always, so just check it out and see what you think...  I'm up to like 20 of this figure already if not more.  I love it. :)

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: Garindan
« on: August 1, 2006, 03:08 AM »
We're back after a little slowdown because of Comic-Con and other factors...  We're picking up where we left off with the Tatooine Wave.  This week's review is for:

The snitchiest snitch of Tatooine, Garindan.

Clicky the button to ready the review...

So I went into getting the Tatooine Wave in general with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder.  Early photos showed the wave to clearly lack articulation that, had these come out in 2005, I really believe we'd have gotten something better.  Hell, even in 2004, we got a wave of Cantina figures with elbow, wrist, and knee joints on all 3 for no real reason at all...  Flash forward to '06 though and we're lacking knee joints.

Now that said, Momaw Nadon was as disappointing as I had imagined...  However, when I got to Garindan, he was a figure that first and foremost NEEDED a resculpt desperately while Momaw I could've lived without and I don't think many others would've cared either.  Garindan though was really one of those figures from the POTF2 line showing its age...  And Hasbro responded.

Is he perfect?  No...  Like I said, he is lacking knee joints which is a shame no matter which way you try to slice it...  It's 2006, Star Wars figures SHOULD have a better standard of articulation and Hasbro just doesn't set standards and keep to them with this line.  That will always be frustrating to me...

But the good this figure has far outweighs the bad.  The communicator, the cloth cloak, the incredible improvement to the working holster, the holster for the communicator (freaking cool little feature to me), and articulation that is close to being good...  There's definitely a lot to like there.  So I'll bitch less about knees this week in my review...  I'll certainly rave a good bit about the cool features on this figure though, and let me say that I love Hasbro's rendition of the Kubaz species and what they look like...  too bad his goggles don't come off and we get a whole headsculpt. :)

Read the review though, check it out...  this figure has a lot to like, and it's one of those times that pictures didn't do it justice and it really actually was a figure that my opinion changed on it after I got it, opened it, and enjoyed it while reviewing it.  Kudos to Hasbro for winning me over...

Now make better articulated figures a STANDARD already...  Get off your asses and just do it and stop with the 1980 articulation (mostly on the legs) as it's getting old.  ;)
