Title: 2014 Saga Legends Basic Figures (Rebels Cardback)
Post by: Jeff on May 2, 2014, 10:42 AM
Courtesy of Sandtroopers - Saga Legends sneak peek!  click here for the giant-size pic (http://www.sandtroopers.com/newspics/SWR_preview03.jpg)

Looks like they are just character place-holders in the pic, but it looks like these guys are being added to Saga Legends line-up this Fall:

- TIE Pilot
- Plo Koon
- AT-AT Driver
- Royal Guard

Very excited for all these, especially the Jedi Temple Guard. Very cool to see Hasbro keeping CW alive even if it's one figure here and there. The Royal Guard will be very interesting - soft goods or no? The AT-DP Pilot is probably my favorite design so far from Rebels so good to see him.

3 of those could very well be animated rebels figs.  I wouldn't be surprised really.  Stormie needs buddies.

The Royal guard intrigues me. If it's well sculpted, it could be a part of the official army.

They were sort of overshadowed last night, but the Legends stuff that Hasbro had on display looked really nice...

I'm not going to buy Skiff Lando and X-Wing Luke because I already have really nice versions of them, but I'll definitely pick up that Bespin Han for my Han collection. ;)

I was happy to see Luke, though the helmet is kind of odd. Maybe one of the existing ones will fit on there. Han I'm glad to see since I wasn't super happy with the TVC one. Lando... we just got the TVC one, which was very good, and I always liked the Saga one way back when better anyways.

No new Rebels or Clone Wars figures teased for this line?  ???

Forgot about the Royal Guard, too. I thought the lack of new Rebels was odd, but we'll see what else comes during the show.

Nope...  just OT.

They didn't discount future Rebels figures, but I kind of got the feeling that Rebels won't have the same range of characters that TCW did.  That's why the Legends boxes are Rebels and Movies figures combined.
Title: Re: 2014 Saga Legends Basic Figures
Post by: Jesse James on October 10, 2014, 02:22 PM
Plus Hasbro had said "Lots of OT" in the build-up to the new movies at one point, no?  Like they want that as the focus going in...  Rebels is hitting at a weird time.  I agree Jeff, it seems like the line may be somewhat limited.  So far there hasn't been much beyond the mains to get excited about anyway but it's only a couple episodes in.

I wonder if the show may be somewhat short-lived and that's the plan all along?  Not a huge expansive show like TCW was.

Post by: Darby on October 10, 2014, 06:11 PM
Dave Filoni has said there's a long term plan for it, and it's been picked up for a second season, so Hasbro's apparent lack of interest is somewhat odd. On top of that, consider a comment from the Hasbro PR rep that Paul Harrison talked to at the show: so far as they know, all the Rebels figures have shipped, so it came as a surprise to them none have been found. What the hell?

Title: Re: 2014 Saga Legends Basic Figures

I get the feeling that there's one of two things going on with the REBELS basic figures.

1 - There's a holdup in the distribution chain.  And it could be anywhere in the chain:  shipping from HK to North America, or from Hasbro's warehouses on the West coast to the retail chains.

2 - There's a street date on the REBELS figures.

As for the limited nature of the REBELS line so far?  I get the sense that Hasbro is playing things more conservatively.  THE CLONE WARS animated series started out with great ratings as well as a feature film.  But ratings and interest tapered off with time.  As did sales of the 3.75" figure system.

What does Hasbro have to gain by holding things back?  Interest.  By delaying the release Hasbro might be trying to ramp up the level of interest in the line, albeit artificially.  There's also the nature of the way this new series will play out.  There are about 8 central characters, plus troopers.  That's very different from the broad scope of THE CLONE WARS.  In CW you had LOTS of Jedi, LOTS of Clones, and LOTS of Seperatists.  And that had the potential to generate a figure line that might have some 40+ figures per year.  But REBELS is different.  It focuses on the crew of The Ghost, who are 5 people plus a droid.  The Imperials in the series will generate some characters for the line, but we're not likely to see the widespread individualization with troopers that was a big part of CLONE WARS.

I think we'll see more REBELS offerings at Toy Fair '15.  But with Episode VII some 14+ months off from release now, I think we're likely to see a rampup from Hasbro that leads towards the new movie.  And REBELS is likely to be an interesting sub-line.  Kind of the way the late ear POTF2 CommTechs were in the EPISODE I days.

Wouldn't it make more sense if Hasbro's attention is simply on gearing up for new SW films in theaters, leaving Rebels as less of a priority?
Title: Re: 2014 Saga Legends Basic Figures
Post by: Jesse James on October 11, 2014, 05:16 PM
I think that is it and what I was kinda trying to say.  Hasbro at one point said (iirc) they've been told to start refocusing, no?   Rebels is falling at a bad time I think and that's all.
Title: Re: 2014 Saga Legends Basic Figures (Rebels Cardback)

Catching up on the Legends stuff, I saw that JTA (http://www.jeditemplearchives.com/content/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=14941) and Scum (http://www.rebelscum.com/story/front/High_Resolution_Hasbro_Upcoming_Rebels_Saga_Legends_Gallery_162201.asp) both posted pictures of some new figures.

I'll be adding that Endor Han because of my Carded Han Solo collection, but no thanks to Endor Luke, Leia, and Commander Bly.

This line keeps dumbfounding me.  Most of these sculpts are really, really great... but the lack of articulation just kills it for me.  I get the Kenner vibe and deep down I think I really like them... but at the end of the day, I just keep seeing an inferior version of something I almost always already have.  :-\
Title: Re: 2014 Saga Legends Basic Figures (Rebels Cardback)
Post by: Jesse James on January 28, 2015, 07:02 PM
I'm in the camp where if it's new (and not too animated looking), I figure I either want it for what it is, or I want it to try and attempt a custom articulation job on it.  I've found some interesting avenues of late for adding articulation with relatively minimal effort, skill, and having it function without issues like paint flaking and joints falling apart...  If I can do that, and get some very basic stuff out of a figure (knees and elbows, wrists as well), then I'm pretty content with the figure for what it is.

Like you though, articulation keeps me from ALL the other figures.  I may get Hoth Luke for the head though.  A goggle-less hoth hat is interesting to me.  Weird thought I know.

Grabbed a Gree at Target...  Weird seeing these 5POA Clone Wars figures, yet done in a realistic style to aim more at collectors and fit in with the line overall...  Just odd.  Oh and even more odd is having the bandolier as a separately sculpted piece.  Why?  Not that I'm complaining.  It's just odd.

Otherwise, I'm pretty pleased with Gree for what he is...  I plan to adjust him some so he's more poseable but he's not bad as-is.

I grabbed a mintier carded Gree tonight, to replace the busted up one I got previously. Not sure I want to open the spare since I have the original CW figure laying around loose already. Maybe good custom fodder though.

For those keeping track, in the last two weeks, Wave 1 started hitting Walmart, Wave 2 is hitting Target, and now Wave 3 is IN-STOCK at EE...

Case of 12 (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=HSA3857F&id=JE-405087801)

Set of 6 (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=HSA3857FF&id=JE-405087801)

Also saw some reports of them popping up (on the expensive side) at Amazon as well.

Are the floodgates finally opening?

So I finally saw the Saga Legends Commander Gree as well as the SL AT-AT Driver in the wild yesterday.  And it was kind of a disappointing situation.  We already had a Clone Wars Gree in the same armor deco, and there have been some pretty cool AT-AT Drivers offered since about 2009.  So when I saw these figures (with 5 POA) this sense of 'MEH' just washed over me.  I can get behind a figure like the Jedi Temple Guard since that's an all new character that has never made into a figure before.  But these 5 POA offerings of characters that have been previously offered in versions with super articulation and great sculpting really fall flat for me.
Title: Re: 2014 Saga Legends Basic Figures (Rebels Cardback)
Post by: Darby on March 6, 2015, 03:30 PM
I definitely agree with some figures it's a case of why bother. Gree, yep. The Skiff Guard Lando, yep. I still like the 2004 version! The AT-At Driver though I was surprised how much I liked it. I wasn't a huge fan of the last version and this one seems to me the best sculpt of him we've gotten, though previous versions have much better paint apps.

But these 5 POA offerings of characters that have been previously offered in versions with super articulation and great sculpting really fall flat for me.

That's my feeling.  Didn't I just buy these 20 years ago.  True, it's stretching things with their He-Man likenesses, but some were actually pretty good pre-Phantom Menace.  It's amazing when Hasbro is offering up things that we've already bought (and some have sold off these 5 PoA figures since they own the better version) and are now re-buying the 5 PoA figure again in this line.  Can't complain about Hasbro since they are making money again off figures we already own.

Now, if Hasbro wanted to use this line and offer up Astromechs (new, never been done along with R2 and others), Podracers, Imperial Dignitaries, etc and use TBS (or whatever the premium 4" line will be called) for figures that need to have more than 5 PoA then that would be great.  Do I see it happening?  No.
Title: Re: 2014 Saga Legends Basic Figures (Rebels Cardback)
Post by: Jesse James on March 9, 2015, 02:52 AM
I look at Gree as a new figure...  Realistic style Phase I Gree was never made till this one.  Like realistic styled Rex was new, and thankfully getting a better version too.

Realistic Gree I sucked it up and bought to replace joints, more or less, where I am able.

If they did other Clones from the toon, like Phase I Cody or Bly, I'd buy in I'm sure.  Same with an Echo or Fives or anyone else really.

While I agree on some of the character choices, ultimately this line isn't for collectors and is more kid-targeted, so as gateway figures it's a must to have the mains out there for the kids.  If some collectors jump on along the way, more the better for Hasbro ultimately, right?

I think at the end of the day, every line they make, they want to have some kid appeal to it, but the collector lines in TBS are going to give that extra umph to get collectors to buy and be (relatively speaking) content (almost hard to type that without cracking up).  So with TBS you'll have your Vaders here and there, but you'll have your scene-specific Vader with slight upgrades or changes, you'll get your upgrades, you'll get your random Mosep or Toryn Farr...  Legends so far has been pretty vanilla stuff comparatively speaking.  Even Bounty Hunters fall into that category of not so obscure that kids don't know who they are and dig them.  Notice IG-88 and Bossk rolled out, but not Dengar.  Dengar...  no love in any line from kiddies. :)

Either way, Legends has some things I'm into here and there...  Just not very much.  I was actually pretty happy to get Gree, in a way, but kinda disappointed too.  It was a real catch 22 getting a figure I wanted, but he's only 5 POA.  He'll take some work but I can make him cool.  Others, like making a cool AT-DP Driver, are going to be a lot more work if I want him accurate.  And the JT Guard?  He's pretty much a figure I'll buy for pieces to cast, and try an almost ground-up custom that makes me happy.

A bunch of the Wave 6/7 Saga LEgends figures have been popping up on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=star%20wars%20saga%20legends&sprefix=star+wars+saga+le%2Caps) for $8.99 each.

As of this post, X-Wing Luke, Skiff Lando, Endor Han are all in stock at the $8.99 price...

Got my Legends Bespin Han today.  The Kenner nostalgia of these 5POA figs is much more effective onme for a figure like this where the Kenner version was in my top five favorites as a kid. :)

The fact that they are now trying to work functional holsters onto the figures is greatly appreciated.  Makes me wish even more that the Mission Series ANH Han had been given a holster. :-\

Not quite sure I like the non-removable helmet aspect of Lando - why does Luke have one then? - but I find myself loving this segment of the line more and more. I'm a vintage guy through and through and these more and more thread that needle between perfect modern sculpting and a general vintage aesthetic. The paint apps aren't really there, but some of these figures are leagues beyond previous versions. Yoda I think is the best example. That MS Yoda dropping any day now destroys basically every modern Yoda Hasbro has done and that's saying something. Ditto Hoth Han and Bespin Han and Endor Han - basically all the Han's.

So I was thinking about what else I want to see here in this line and here's what I got. Trying to keep it simple:

SW:

Farm Boy Luke
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Sand People
Jawa(s)
Tarkin
Rebel Fleet Trooper

ESB:

Hoth Leia
Bespin Lando
Hoth Rebel Trooper
Snowspeeder Wedge/Luke
Zuckuss
4-LOM

ROTJ:

The Emperor
Emperor's Royal Guard - who I think is coming anyways
Endor Rebel Soldier
TIE Pilot
Wedge
More Ewoks

CW (because the dream never dies):
Obi-Wan in Mandalore Armor
Satine
Bo Katan
Nightsister
Bounty Hunter Ventress

I was starting to think some of these Legends figures were alright, then today I got Bly and the Endor versions of Luke, Leia, and Han.

What a bunch of clunkers.  The Han's the only decent one.  The Luke looks deformed.

I was thinking the same exact thing. The vintage Endor Leia was a much better figure than this legends version.

And I didn't know the Lando Skiff guard helmet was not removable. Wow. In a negative way.

Tough to beat the TVC Lando Skiff Sandstorm fig anyway.

I'm not a huge fan of existing Endor Han, Luke, or Leia but I prefer them for what they are ultimately.  Would love a new Han tho of the 3.  The 5 POA just doesn't cut it for me on these mains.  Some of them are appealing, especially unmade characters that are kind of obscure like the Jedi Guard.  But on these mains, even barrel torso Han just was better to me.

Why are 5POS figures $9.99 at TRU? Is this so they can put them on sale for $6.99 in the future?

Received the Endor wave, and the OT Mission Series sets from HTS today. Yoda and the Hoth Han and Luke are works of art, but the Endor wave really leaves me cold. Even the POTF2 versions were better than these clunkers.

I'm not saying the Endor wave is great, but I'm not sure how anything about them is worth all the vitriol I've read online.  Especially Han.
Title: Re: 2014 Saga Legends Basic Figures (Rebels Cardback)
Post by: Darby on April 4, 2015, 10:27 AM
I happen to love the Endor wave myself. What I like best is that none of the previous figures just captured the simple 'look' of these outfits - in the modern line anyway - leaving them looking like they were wearing potato sacks. Leia is the least successful, mostly due to the head sculpt which has her looking downward in this scowl that the paint apps, depending on your example, turn into this range between angry enough to kill to just sort of pissed. Luke is great. Han for me trumps all modern versions. He's not as good as the Hoth Han which like Ben said is a masterpiece and probably example #1 of why the SL line deserves far more credit than it gets. The online ALL CAPS hatred about these figures and 5 POA in general is hard to take seriously anymore.

Well, there were reports that Hasbro is "sold out" (http://yakfaceforums.com/main/2015/03/25/saga-legendsrebels-assortment-discontinued/) of the Legends cases.

If Target has no more Legends cases in their DC and they can't get any more from Hasbro, then a clearance to clear the pegs to make more room for the summer Marvel movie lines isn't a surprise I guess...

Oh, and a Target clearance of the Rebels Saga Legends DPCI is probably another sign that the rumored $8 "SW E7 3.75 Single Fig" DPCI (087-06-3658) is most likely the "kid" line (or the only 3.75" line  :-X).

I can confirm this...I bought an X-Wing Pilot Luke last night for $2.98. I thought it must be a random fluke but maybe not.

I have only seen this at one store, and that was the only figure they had, but it's definitely got me interested in checking around now.

I've only seen remnants of that AT-DP Pilot wave once...  Never saw a wave after, and not seen anything of the AT-DP Wave since either.  Weird.

$8 kids line, 5 POA?  Yikes.  :)

Glad I'm not into them because, wow that'd hurt.

I'm sure I'll get some TFA stuff, but with sales mostly.  Playing it smart, like ROTS and AOTC before it.

Wow.  I barely saw any of these in the stores.

Was Hasbro's production run that small, or did they ship them all to eastern Europe to be clearanced?

I wonder if the same thing is going to happen to the TBS figures.  I don't think I've seen anything new since October.

Yeah, I find the early Target clearance to be an interesting move for a number of reasons. Were there that few made or did the time just run out on these with the coming Sept relaunch? How long until Walmart and TRU follow suit? Will we ever see these show up at places like 5 Below or TJ MAXX?

It certainly was a brief window where these things hit. I'm sure they will re-pack most of the Rebels figures in future waves, but I can definitely see some guys like the Jedi Temple Guard falling off the radar for awhile.

Both.  Lots of reports that Hasbro is "sold out" on these cases due to small production runs.  If Target can't get any more product from Hasbro and has nothing left in their DC, they're not going to sit on empty pegs until Ep7.  It becomes time to clearance and use the space for something else.

I wonder if the same thing is going to happen to the TBS figures.  I don't think I've seen anything new since October.

TBS has more waves coming (at least one, potentially two assuming Wave 8 isn't cancelled) so in theory, it should be safe from clearance...  for now.

Picked up a Bespin Han at Target for $1.94 cause why not, eh?

Doesn't quite beat the $1.00 Clone Wars figures I found at one point on a Walmart clearance aisle, but it's pretty good.
