Title: tykrazen's customs 8/7 Thrawn, organa Solo, Luuke, Karrde
Post by: tykrazen on January 12, 2003, 08:13 PM
Hey all!

I just posted some of my newest work over at theJawa.com's customs section including my new POTJ style Luke Skywalker: Dagobah Training.  You can check it out at...
www.thejawa.com/customs/tykrazen/tykrazen.php (http://www.thejawa.com/customs/tykrazen/tykrazen.php)

And for a teaser here's a thumbnail...

I've been working on the Luke for some time now and I'm planning to do a Yoda: Starship Levitation (Which is why I've kept Luke's gaping jaw!).  Just trying to decide on some parts.  Love to hear feedback.

What you ended up with is a great custom, some things are meant to take time.Nice work indeed!

Very nice work tykrazen.
Those are awsome customs.  :o
Thanks for sharing & please post more.  ;)
That Luke is quite something. Nice Job.

It's been one of my favorites to work on because I stumbled across the parts.  I taught me to work with the existing sculpt when removing or adding details.  In this case, I used the existing wrinkles in the shirt to guide when I placed them on Luke's T-shirt.  I have another custom I'm working on that uses the exact same torso as a base and you can't tell if you put them next to each other.

Hi gang!

I just updated with my two latest customs -- General Madine and a SOTE Luke.  As always, feedback is appreciated.

You can see more images of them as well as the recipes at www.thejawa.com/customs/tykrazen/tykrazen.php (http://www.thejawa.com/customs/tykrazen/tykrazen.php)

I really like the use of parts in these customs.  The Sabe head, the one from that animated space movie (looks pretty durn close to the reference, don't it!), and the Maul arms for your Moff.  One tip:  Once your premo/sculpey is cured, you can sand and shave it to give it a cleaner look.  Great Job!

Thanks for the kind words everyone :).

I appreciate the commants on the premo.  Even when I sand it down with 400 sandpaper the polymer clays still have a texture that drives me buggy.  Groznik will probably be my last large scale use of polymer clays for customs.  I'm slowly moving into wax.  My next two major sculpts -- Grand Moff Trachta and R5-D4 are using wax casts for the base of my resculpts.

I'm currently working on pieces for an Order 66 Diorama.  I’ve been posting these pics elsewhere and just getting around to it here.  The finished Felucia diorama will be roughly 11" x 11".  So far I've made 2 of the flower plants, a concept test for the mushrooms, one of the orange Dr. Suessesque plants  and one of the green & white striped plants (which don't really look like the ones in film -- I'll probably revisit these).
I've also finished customs of Bly and one of his grunts.

Title: R5-D4
Post by: tykrazen on July 18, 2005, 12:57 PM
Here's my version of R5-D4.  The head is a cast of a modified Star Tours R5-D2 and the body is from R3-T7 (The Sneak Preview droid from AOTC).  The antennae and "eyes" are all cut from a SAGA Bespin Luke weather vane.

Beautiful job on this.  It's much better than Hasbro's version, and not just because their version is bad.  It's because you made a figure that would be a great item to see in stores just like you did it.

Great job - I really like the "eyes" on it.

Those really are some funky colors you have going on there.  Trippy.

I noticed on the Bly, should there be more paint around the breathing nozzels?  I see a lot of white, and was thinking that part of the mask should be yellow?

The early pics I didn't get the yellow all the way in there

I was following Lord Helmet's advice: "fire across her nose, not up it!"

It has been subsequently fixed.

Post by: tykrazen on August 29, 2005, 09:41 AM
Today's addition is my Episode 2 super-articulated Obi Wan Kenobi.  The head is from the Jedi vs. Sith Battle Pack and the legs are modified from a ROTS Agen Kolar.  The rest of the body is a repainted ROTS Obi Wan Kenobi Red Leader figure.

I think it looks great.  I do wish that Hasbro would make a slightly better AOTC Obi Wan head though, I always though that that one from the Battle Pack looks just a bit mushed and fat.

I like the Battle pack Obi-wan head. I think it's just me, but I think it looks great; Not 100% accurate, but still just really good.

You're right that the head isn't 100% accurate, but it is the best Hasbro has offerred to date.  and Rodger, you're alive! :-P -- I haven't heard from you in a while.
Title: Jabba on the Dais!
Post by: tykrazen on September 2, 2005, 10:29 AM
I finally completed Jabba's Throne.  I started work on this over a year and a half ago after making my version of Jabba and finally got around to finishing it.  The throne was carved in wood to make a Mold Master.  Then I cast it using  hydrocal.  The ornaments are casts of the vintage playset version with jewelry clasps used to make the metal rings.  The leather is leather and the pillows were sculpted in Sculpey 3.

Eventually I plan on making the entire scene of Boushh's arrival, but since I have no display space, I'm only working on components for it at the moment.

I really like it.  Jabba's color seems a little off, but the dais is superb.  It looks a little pinkish, but still that's excellent detail work beyond my skills.   :)

Hey, great job!

The "battle pack" head is not perfect, but it's better than ALL the other AOTC era Obi Wan heads, with the possible exception of Coruscant Chase (but that one has a dreaful body.)

I'd love to try this one if I could ever find the Pilot ROTS Obi Wan.

It's a sheet of plastic canvas available at any craft store such as Rag Shop or Michaels.

Wow -- it's been a while since I updated here...

Alot of new items... I'll post a few pics here and go check my gallery at theJawa.com (http://thejawa.com/customs/rtykrazen/tykrazen.php) for more pics...

First up is my Endor display...

This was built to display my Vintage Ewok village and the modern bunker.  The structure is made from foamcore.  I photoshopped the background images using some Redwood pics from the Diorama/ Background thread here at JediDefender.  The ground was made using painted foam sheets.  I built a foundation for the bunker which includes some grill work and access hatches.  The small plants are all model railroad scenic supplies.

The two Endor trees not part of the Vintage set were repainted.  Eventually I plan to add a bridge between them for the Luke/Leia revelation scene.

Next up is the Darth Vader Jedi Starfighter...

A basic repaint of the ROTS Anakin Starfighter.  I masked off the grey parts -- repainted the rest with Black spraypaint.  After that dried, I dripped silver paint and then wiped it towards the rear of the ship to create the fligh damage.

The final complete project is my Rebellion Era Cargo Shuttle.

This was a Playmates Star Trek Shuttlecraft that I gutted.  The cockpit is made from a Vintage GI JOE Vamp chasis and the added winds are from a vintage X-wing fighter.  (I'm still waiting on X-wing cannons for the wings).  A droid socket was cut into the top and built up using styrene scraps.

Finally, here's a few teaser shots of my next big project... A WIP Clone Command Center.  I'm using the top of a Vintage GI JOE Terrodrome as the centerpiece of the project...

If you want to see more WIP pics of this you can either wait until I get the page coded or you can visit my threads at thejawa or FFurg  :).

What a nice update.  I always know you are actively making customs so it's good to see what you are working on.

The Endor set is nice, it really has a vintage feel to it, which is cool.  It might not look like a movie diorama but it has a great look to it.

The Vader ship is nice too - I might suggest making the astromech a darker color?

The cargo shuttle is just too cool!  How long is it?  Is there an area for cargo to go?  I really like this.

As for the terror dome, awesome!  I have a old one that is in hellish condition, I might copy your idea here.  Is there an easy way to get the top part off like you did?

Also, it looks like you're making a Sarlacc pit?

 :)

Hi there  tykrazen,

WOW  :o :o :o!!! I really love the Dais!!! That just so cool. That's what Hasbro should have included with that Ultra Jabba a couple years ago. Nice work there. I really like the cracks in the stone, great detail work there. I also like the Endor forest sceene. I always wondered why Hasbro did not re-release the forest along with the bunker instead of that pile of logs that to this day I still do not know what it was for. The Vader fighter looks great for a repaint. Maybe this thing will show up in the TV show in 2007. As for the cargo shuttle, it was awesome when you sent pictures to me before, it still looks awesome today. I still have those guns you wanted waiting for you. PM if you still want them.

Again, nice work there.

Oh man, that's fantastic. I knew that the Covergirl would work best for Mara, but I wanted a good-looking female face for my Jaina custom. That Mara is top notch, though!

I was also looking for some use for Covergirl's jacket and Iron Knife's head: my New Jedi Order Han came to mind for the jacket, but now that that's finished, I think your Talon Karrde recipe is a great fit.

Edit:

As for Mara's goggles, you should pick up an Elite Force Marine grenadier figure, because they come with these AWESOME removable goggles that I plan on using for my eventual Mara.

Thanks Chewie -- that's a great compliment given how amazing your parts choices are.  I don't know why the comic 3 pack with Covergirl made me think of Thrawn characters, but it has.   Besides the fact, they're due for renewed interest in the customizing community.

The fur lined coat seemed a natural for Karrde -- it always bugged me I didn't include it in my last version.  I suspect that there will be plenty of people improving on this Talon Karrde recipe as a way to use the jacket.

I think so -- she was the only one I had (my Toys R Us hasn't gotten the comic pack set yet) so I wasn't going to experiement to find out for sure.  Keep your eyes open over at FFURG as Delaton is casting the head.

Is Delaton the same as "Master_Gunnz" from Rebel Scum? I'm not familiar with the community yet. Master_Gunnz, who is also an avid GI Joe customizer, is casting some of the newer, nicer female heads, and apparently he said he will be casting their hair separate so you can 'mix and match.'

I though that this would be great, because I'd love to use this covergirl for Jaina Solo, but so many people have used it for Mara Jade it seems to have kind of a custom identity already. I was thinking of swapping hair sculpts from one of the Baronesses, incidentally, to give the covergirl more or less Jaina's haircut, but right now I think I may just trim/dremel the hair sculpt as it is. Now it's a matter of actually getting this junk in the mail -- it's been 9 days since I won one of these packs on Ebay!

No Delaton's been around for a while.  I think he primarily posts over the FFURG.  Very nice guy and his casts are really good quality.

I knew that the Cover Girl Joe figure would be an excellent choice for a Mara custom and you proved it. The Talon Karrde looks very good as well! Good job matching up the skin tones.

I really think the Talon Kaarde works out well. You did a good job in disguising Spirit Iron Knife; the figure is completely unrecognizable!

Excellent work. I love the Talon Karrde. This is a very good representation of the character. The rest look very good too, but Kaarde is my fave.

BTW I'm not sure if its just me or not, but it looks like your death squad trooper has his feet reversed.

LMAO, I knew last night when I took the pictures, something didn't seem right.  Now I know -- I can't believe I missed that!  I'll add that to the worklist.

I'm also going to be going back and reworking the noghri as well, the color is off and I think I might "beef" him up.

Talon Karrde looks great.  I had no idea on that base figure and I just bought one last week.

On the Mara Jade custom, the head looks like its "off skew" a little bit.  However, I think this is great custom!

I'm not familar with the Noghri but he's a great looking figure.

I did some clean-up work on the Death Squad Trooper including putting the legs on the right sides (how stupid am I?) and cleaning the inside of the head a bit better so that it seats properly on the body.

Plus here's my next WIP for the project: Grand Admiral Thrawn.  The head is a GI Joe Comic 3 Pack General Arbernathy, the arms, torso and skirt are from a Saga Admiral Ozzel and the legs are from a Saga 2 General Veers.

Oops I totally missed your questions...

The cargo shuttle  is about 16" long -- the rear does open and has room for cargo containers.  Basically from the R-Unit back is all cargo space -- kind of a space station wagon :).

As for removing the top of the terrodrome, it was fairly easy -- just a little gentle pressure to pull it off.

As for the sarlacc pit -- hmm... I guess it does look that way doesn't it... if I wasn't so obsessed about getting the command center done, I might have considered a change in plan.

Here's a pic from my latest diorama.  It's meant to fit on a small shelf (18" x 12" x6 1/4").  The ground is particle board covered with permascene.  The background is made from carved styrofoam.  The Jedi starfighter is a customized E2 Obi-Wan Kenobi Starfighter.  I dremmeled the hull to match the pictures of the damage done to the ship by Jango.  The whole ship was repainted in a red wash, then the white was repainted.  Extra dings were added and the cockpit received a repaint as did little R4.  More pics are available in my gallery at theJawa.com... www.thejawa.com/customs/tykrazen/tykrazen.php (http://www.thejawa.com/customs/tykrazen/tykrazen.php)

Sure, it was pretty simple actually.  I hacked away at the styrofoam with a metal ruler to "carve" it.   I used Citadel's Bleached Bone as a base coat.  After the base coat dried, I filled a spray bottle with Apple Barrel Cardinal Red and lots of water.  I sprayed the water/ paint mixture liberally all over.  The trick with this layer is for the application to be very inconsistent and random.  When that dried, I used a 1 1/2 " trim brush (like you would use to paint your house) and dry-brushed Apple Barrel Burnt Sienna.  What's critical on this layer is to paint darker in the areas you don't want the viewer's eye to focus and lighter where you do.  Since the Starfighter cockpit, the damage, and  Obi-Wan form the triangle where I wanted the focus, the wall behind and the ground surrounding that area receieved significantly less brown paint than the rest of the scenery.

If you want to see WIP pics of the piece, it's in the background of many of my Clone Command Center WIP pictures as the two were worked on concurrently.

Yet another piece done... here's my Clone Command Chariot.

It's a fan fiction vehicle.  I figure it is speeder used to move Republic Army Commanders behind the lines.  The chasis is a stripped down GI Joe Mauler Tank, with Vintage Landspeeder wheels (so it can roll) and a Saga Snowtrooper E-Web Cannon.

I've gotten quite a few comments on other sites from people saying it would be real easy to take out Tarkin.... stoopid officers having no knees :-P.

I think I'll be revisiting the design later in the week... 1st to give some sort of protection to creepy ole' Tarkin and 2) To add some sort of thrusters.

Someone else pointed out to me that it looked like it was missing something, but they weren't sure what.  As I thought about it, I realized all the speeder designs we have seen in the Star Wars Universe have had some sort of thrusters to propell them.  I need to dig through my kitbash pile, but I have some ideas where to begin on this.  Hopefully I'll have revised pics later this week.

Post by: tykrazen on April 26, 2006, 10:17 PM
Based on the suggestions I've received here and elsewhere, I'm making some modifications to the chariot design.  I've added a thruster to each side and, I think, a windscreen for the commander.  I've put a full clear plastic piece in for now, but I plan to trim it so it tapers down on the sides.  (The new thrusters aren't painted yet).

I think your additions are looking very good... the thrusters are exactly what this needed.

Actually, this might sound a bit goofy, but here's an suggesion that you may or may not like.  Owen D recently made a tank for me, and I was thinking that the top of it (from the Hoth rebel turret) might look good on your tank.  Sorry for using your pic - just trying to come up with ideas.

Also are you familiar at all with the Ultarama "posts" the hold them up?  one of those divided in two could work out really well on the sides to create a rounded hover speeder look.

 :)

Title: Re: tykrazen's customs 4/26 Revised Clone Command Chariot
Post by: tykrazen on April 28, 2006, 06:28 AM
I appreciate your input Chewie.  Because the original purpose of the vehicle was a tank, I wanted to avoid making a tank.   (I'm not a very literal person :-P).

That being said as I worked on this yesterday, I ran into a snag -- None of my various glues are working to bond the clear plastic to the Chasis... Still trying to figure out of I can use screws and digging through parts for clips, but the windscreen may be going away.

I've also added a vintage At-St top gun to the front right cockpit seat at the suggestion of a military buff.

More pics will come once all the painting is done.

I've started experimenting using greenstuff to help bond pieces together.  So far its worked very well.  You might be able create a bond using one of these expoxy resins and then repainting those surfaces.

Post by: tykrazen on April 28, 2006, 01:11 PM
Last night I tried a 2-part epoxy, my polystyrene solvent and superglue.  None of them worked to bond the two surfaces.  The keep interacting with the clear plastic and apparently softening it.  I'm trying to work on some other ideas because I really feel it needs something there.

More modifications to the design -- the beginnings of a command console for the officer as well as a seat for him (or her).  Venting and armor plating added to the side as well.  Small arms added to communications position.  Obviously alot of painting to be done.

I like the use of Joe parts on this. At least someone found a use for those satelite dishes the Pilot came with. The windscreen is a great touch. So are you finished with it or is there more to come? Because Im liking it so far.

The gun tower is sweet too. I beleive Ive seen something like it recently in the Rebellon comic. Is that what inspired this or was it coincidence? I like it regardless.

Thanks guys -- at this point these are done -- I've spent far more time on them then I planned and I really want them off of the desk (Plus I just picked up an X-30, Tomahawk & another Joe Plane for $15 today and I want to start cutting those up :)).

The gun tower would be coincidence.  Originally I bought the Mauler to make a turret  to add onto my command center (It reminded me of the SPAH(?) cannon without it's dish), but when I realized it was bigger than I thought, I needed an alternative use.  Some scrap pieces added and a turret is born.

Clone Speeder- Looks really great I like the Clone Pilot turrets as the thrusters. The E-Web mounted on the back looks great too.

Gun Battery Tower- This is my favorite out of the two. Looks very Imperial-like. I would suggest adding some greeblies to the main structure of the tower to make it look a little more interesting, but otherwise, good job!

Post by: tykrazen on May 21, 2006, 09:46 PM
11 of the 12 figures for this set are getting closer to done -- here's a couple teaser pics of where I am.

Front Row:
Luke Skywalker Wayland Final Duel
Ralrra Kashyyk Guard
Noghri Warrior Kashyyk Assault
Clone Stormtrooper (with Removable Helmet)
Leia Organa Solo Kashyyk Assault
Luuke Skywalker (Wayland Duel)

Back Row:
Mara Jade Wayland Final Duel
Death Squad Commander
Grand Admiral Thrawn
Talon Karrde Wayland Assault
Lando Calrissian Wayland Assault

Not Pictured (because not really started yet):  Joruus C'boath

The concept behind this is what would a Thrawn Collection look like if Hasbro decided to realease one.  Figures were chosen based on playability as well as recognition.  Some figures were planned and dropped as I worked through the ideas.  Some that made it as far as parts selection included Han Solo - Wayland Assault, Captain Palleon, Garm Bel Iblis, General Covell.

Most of these still have some work to be done on them, so more detailed pics will surface as I finish them up.

As always, I love suggestion for improvement.

Hey, great update!  These really look great together.  What a nice collection of figures from the Thrawn series, ones I'd be interested in seeing Hasbro make.

Seeing a Clone Stormtrooper is just great, and if I recall they aren't clones of Jango anymore at that point?  Looks like a good custom, I think you used a Bust Up helmet.

Mara Jade and Leia really are awesome, hard to suggest an improvement on those, or on Talon Kardde.

The one figure from what I see looks like if could be improved is the Luke, with his arms showing.  They're kind of bulky and his chest seems overly defined.

Also the Noghri looks like a little troll guy, but I don't really have any suggestions on what else you could do with him.

I'm almost done with the next phase of the Thrawn Trilogy set, but since they aren't done yet, here's pics of my latest project.
I'm still cleaning up the paint job, but here's the WIP for my latest fan fic ship -- the T-Wing Interceptor.  Originally designed as a Police patrol craft, the design was modified by the manufacturer to meet the needs of the newly formed clone army.  The dual wing-tip laser cannons were upgraded as was the shield generator system.  Due to their speed and stealth systems, T-Wings are often used as a first strike vehicle.  This particular T-Wing was assigned to the 501st.

I like the customs on the back. Nice touch, i also like the book cover... A personal must for my cards.
It pics chosen are very dynamic. Adds alot of flair to the card.
Nice color choice on the boarder too. Works well with the images.

I would change the death star pic though. Make it a desert scene/ tatooine like scene. If my memory serves
me, he was somewhere like that right?

Great work

Glassman,

I actually chose this scene because the Wayland Throne Room where the final duel occurred was very similar to the DS2 Throne Room.  The other option would have been either a Star Destroyer or somewhere brown/tan (which with his clothes wouldn't really work too well).  It's not perfect, but the bext I can do with my still growing photoshop skills.

Things didn't go as planned this weekend, so I have a smaller update than I planned but it's all new to you:

First up is Wolf Sazen from Darkhorse Legacy:

Head is a Jedi Council Screen Scene Eeth Koth with sculpted hair.  The Torso and arms are from the Evolutions E3 Anakin Skywalker .  The upper legs are from the Evolutions Darth Vader and the lower legs are from ROTS Agen Kolar.

Next up is the leader of the Imperial Knights, Antares Draco:

His head is from an E1 Ric Olie, the Torso is a ROTS Royal Guard, Arms are from the Evolutions Darth Vader, Legs from a ROTS Black Clone Pilot.  Green stuff was used for the sculpted armor and the shoulder pads are sheet styrene.

Finally a Legacy Era Stormtrooper:

The head is a gentle giant Bust-up Stormtrooper resculpted to match the Legacy helmets (slit-like eye holes, building up of the cheeks). Torso and arms are from a Saga2 Sandtrooper.  The torso sculpt was modified as well to match the new look.  Legs are from a ROTS Clone Commander (modified).

For whatever reason I'm not into Legacy, and the whole Cade Skywalker character turns me off to that era.  Still a nice looking custom however, especially the symbol on his chest.

I'm like C'Baoth a lot, I always thought he was a cool character.  Good sculpting on the hair/beard.

it's cool to see someone taking a stab at these new charecters and you seem to be doing a good job at it to! i really like the cade, the flowing over coat is awsome. i also like the wolf, looks good, but i suggestion, give the sculpted parts another once over, you can srill see the green parts. otherwise great customs, keep up the good work!
