Title: CommanderKorbra's Customs - Making sure the topic isn't gone...
Post by: CommanderKorbra on March 19, 2006, 11:58 AM
Hi, all. I've just joined and wanted to share my customs. I'm a member at Rebelscum too. Check these out-

My first custom, a female Sith. I had just learned how to customize figures and didn't have a head for a head swap. Since the pictures, she's turned into a female mandalorian:

Second Custom - Parjai Trooper. I think this is my best custom because I used one of Glassman's helmet casts and took my time to make this good:

Third and fourth customs, these guys are part of my huge mandalorian army. Still have to customize alot of the army, but it's looking better with these guys in there:

The blue mandalorian was based on this:

This is the army so far:

My most imaginative custom and the first one I've used sculpey on. I have plans to try a second version with less sculpey and more real parts. I'll also be fixing the helmet so that it fits on the head better. Yellow Female Mandalorian:

You may have noticed that the yellow and red mandalorians are from this picture from SW Insider:

Please Let me know what you think :)

Neat!
I would suggest using less silver on clothing and more greys drybrushed with lighter greys to get the effect you want.
Also the blue clone's name is miles, hes from Jango Fett open seasons.
Really neat customs though!  :)

Thanks. Yea, Miles is pretty cool. I had a Boba Fett to make into him so I did it. I'm making all my Mandalorians into various ones form the comics eventually. On the clothing - I wanted her to have silver pants at the time, but now I look back and say "What was I thinking?" So I just painted her over and added some sculpey to turn her into the female mandalorian. Where do you suggest getting paints from? All I can find near me is Testors Acrylics and enamals. Not much color sellection at that. Is there a good online store that you order paint from?

Also, I forgot to say in the first postthat I'm going to take pics of my latest customs tonight. A 212th legion sniper using Bacara's body, and a SA 501st troop.

First off, welcome to JD, it's a really good community here and the customizing section is great.  You have a ton of work here, some I've seen before, some I haven't.  Since there's so much, I'll pick out a couple that really stand out to me.

Parjai Trooper - Great use of a Glassman helmet here, and really good on your part on the accessories for him, I think by far these are the meanest looking Clonetroopers.

Blue Mandalorian - It has the SAGA2 Fett feel to it but that's ok, the paint on this looks very good.   It really makes him look like a believable Mandalorian.

Good stuff, CK! I saw these previously at another site, but I mostly lurk there.

I love the red Mando and the female Mando. You did a nice job of staying true to your source material.

Looking forward to seeing more...

Lots of cool Fetts here. That female one is very creative. Good job on the armor sculpt. Sculpty can be a little hard to deal with but you made it look easy. The chest came out porportional and not too big. I really like the burn marks on the cape. That sith lord is a little distribing. It looks like she is bleeding for the eyes.  :o

Thank you both :) Is there anything you think I should do different? Like maybe a wash or drybrush or something? Also, like I asked earlier, where do most of you get your paints? I use those cheap ones at Walmart but I'd like to hear what others use.

Here is a picture I found of one of my earlier Mandalorians. He became the red mandalorian if I remember correctly. I might take a Jango and re-make this guy though:

This is my #41 Tac Ops. He turned out ok, I think I did the battledamage wrong though. Oh well:

I needed Bacara's pauldren and kama for my Parjai troop shown above, so this is what happened with the leftover figure:

These are some WIP shots. Can you guess who/what they are?

Your using regular testors enamel paint? That stuff is going to leave your figures sticky forever and in some case melt the plastic. You must use acrylics for paint jobs.

The stuff I use is Tamiya paints. They are a little expensive but you will definately see the quality difference. You can pick them up any hobby store for about $1.50 each. Also I would suggest buying a can of Testors dull cote. That will seal the paint and remove the gloss. Finally, I would also suggest Testors Model Masters acrylic.

Finally invest in a good high quality set of paint brushes from an art supply store. They make it alot easier to paint. Also get a Micron .005 black pen ($2.50)  for details such as eyes and fine detail lines.
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra's Customs
Post by: CommanderKorbra on March 20, 2006, 12:15 PM
Phew, that was alot. Thanks for all of the information. The only enamals that I use are Flat White and Flat Beret Green because I can't find either of those in Acrylics. I do have Testors Dullcoat, and it does show a difference. I like how it removes unwanted glossiness and seals the paint. I don't mind paints being a tad bit expensive, because I understand how it can make a difference in a figure. Can you get Tamiya paints off the internet? I only have one Michaels in my area and they only stock Testors enamels from what I've seen. Also, where do I get this Micron .005 pen? Is this something readily available at places like Walmart or Target? Thanks again for all of the tips, its those kinds of posts that help the most in what to choose. ;D

Post by: Phrubruh on March 20, 2006, 12:50 PM
You can order them directly from Tamiya but they look pretty expensive. Stores that sell model RC cars would have them as well as stores like HobbyPeople or stores that sell Warhammer game figures. Walmart and Target won't sell these paints. Michaels or any art supply store has the micron pens. They come in different colors and sizes.

I really like the female Mando.  You did great job with the sculpy.  It looks very believable..

Concerning paints, you can order Citadel paints (also called Gamesworkshop or Warhammer) paints online at their site.  I'm pretty sure the prices are the same but you'd get stuck with shipping.  Its usually $2.5 - $3.50 for 1/2oz bottle of paint.

1. make 1 really long rectangle that fits more than around there waist and goes down how ever far it needs to.

2. then cut it directly in half.

3. cut a small right angle triangle out of the lower corner of each rectangle on 1 end per peice.

4. fit it, if it isnt perfect do a bit of trimming.

Just had a massive boiling and popping session. I had about six or seven figures boiled and popped down to over 30 parts and sat down to make some customs. This is what I came up with, I've still got to add a few more things, find heads, and of course paint them:

Also, finished (well except for the dullcoat) my custom legion clone grunt and my Mandalorian Warrior. I'll get better pictures outside once the dullcoat is on and dried. Still finishing my custom legion clone commander and Jodo Kast too.

Wow! the boil and pop guys are looking pretty good so far. I cant wait to see what they look like completed.
I like the color scheme on the Mandalorian. But I think the fact that its a POTF2 figure takes away from it a little. That scheme would rock on a better articulated Fett, like a VOTC, or one of the new Saga figs. I know both are as rare as a hens tooth though. Good work none the less.
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra's Customs
Post by: CommanderKorbra on March 22, 2006, 02:56 PM
Thank you Ennis. I'm sorry that I had to use the POTF2 figure, too. I had just bought a few on Rebelscum for 2 bucks each so I figured I'd paint them to see how it came out. I might have to get some of the newer Fetts and use the scheme on them. Also Thanks on the compliment about the boil and pop army. I just trimmed down the clone arms a bit and they are attached to the body now. Does he (the jedi in the first pic) Look good the way he is, or should I repaint some?
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra's Customs
Post by: Darth_Ennis on March 24, 2006, 01:22 PM
Asfar as repainting goes, in my opinion it all depends on what you want him to look like when youre done. I think the yellow stripes look good on the body theyre on though, if thats what you mean.

Great WIP pics.  I love seeing those.  All of these look great, especially the female Jedi bodies.

One thing I'd suggest, is that the Testors paint seems kind of shiny (or is it just me?) - I'd try using the cheap Walmart acrylic paints.  They're so cheap, but really seem to work well.  At least for me they do, and then do a quick matte acrylic spray.

I usually hate weathering, but I totally dig the 501 clone. I also like the black & blue mandalorian.

Are the blue shocktroopers something special?
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra's Customs

Thank you to both of you.

Chewie - The cheap Walmart paints actually are Testors at my Walmart. And no it's not just you, I was using both gloss and flat colors and hadn't dullcoated the figure until after that picture. I'm taking new pics of them in the light outside in the morning.

Clone Hunter - Thanks for the compliment, I didn't know if I did the weathering bad or not on the 501st. As for the "blue shocktroopers", they aren't really shocktroopers. I took a plain clone picture, sat down, and came up with my own armor design. It looks sort of like a Shockie, but not completely.

Any feedback at all is apreciated guys. Especially on that green and steel guy, I thought he looked pretty good :P Here's a WIP Kal Skirata. I think I got the brown and charcoal grey right, I'm still thinking of how to make a sand gold. Maybe some dark tan with some gold in it?Oh and in these pics the white is going to be the sand gold... I mean it's still like 50% WIP, what do you expect? ;)

I like the green and silver guy, he rocks. As far as repaints go tat one looks very good. I noticed a green sharpie in the background is that what you used?

The second one is shaping up pretty well. The add ons look very good, I like the leg armor. As far as painting goes, if your looking for a sand gold color. Walmart has that very color for $0.44. Just check the Apple Barrel acrylic paint section over in crafts. These are the paints that I use. They also have something called Antique Gold that looks really good too, I was thinking about snagging that color myself.

Thanks! I have always thought that the only paints we could use are the ones in the testors model paint area lol. I'm going to check that apple barral paint section tonight.

As for the Sharpie, nah, it wasn't used. I don't like paint markers and I despise using sharpies for customs. It just happened to be sitting on the dining room table ;D

Dang, Walmart only had the huge 16oz bottles. And then all they had in those was some off white, green, one thing of blue, and like 12 yellows. Oh well.
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra's Customs
Post by: CommanderKorbra on April 6, 2006, 08:46 PM
My work area is starting to get crowded with all these unfinished customs... Ah well. I just get bored so easy and start too many things at once. Here is my toughest custom yet, still in WIP stage. A Ultimate Super Atriculated Commander Cody w/ removable helmet.

Took a #41 upper body and lower legs, and a tank gunner pelvis and upper legs. Had to use my X-Acto, learn to dremel, used some sculpey, and used a lot of super glue. Still have to add all Cody's custom parts like his helmet and armband and antenna. Then paint him better than the mock up he is now.

Oh and sorry for the crappy pictures I was in a rush and more than that I couldn't get the right amount of light.

I like the photo where it looks like your Cody is breakdancing, and the other one is watching in envy. This is going to be great when you're done. Are you going to sculpt his shoulder pads to match the screen version?
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra's Customs
Post by: CommanderKorbra on April 7, 2006, 09:00 PM
Yes. Well most likely. It depends on if I like him with the antenna and regular shoulder armor or not. I'm trying to make this one as accurate as possible but with a good amount of articulation aswell. I've got to find a second Saga Cody to use for parts though, the one in the pictures is the one I use for display.
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra's Customs
Post by: Ruprecht on April 9, 2006, 02:06 AM
With creative cutting, you can just modify the existing shoulderpads, thus keeping the articulation.  Here's one I did that with and it looked ok.

Wow, Cody really is short... kind of like that SAGA Hoth Rebel from a couple years back!

I'm liking your Mandalorian a lot.  It's really a good assembly of parts.  I'd personally go for some dull, subdued color scheme, but I am sure whatever you do will look great.

Thanks Darth Nirvana! I'm really excited about this Commander Cody too. Do you or anyone else know what color I should use for his abdomen? It looks like a dark gray but I though I read somewhere that it had some tan in the color...?

Just an update, one of the mandalorians is done. Gotta dullcoat him and then I'll post pics here :) He's Walon Vau btw

Well here's my Walon Vau. Not 100% accurate but how cool can a completely black figure look? Oh and I got sick of trying to paint that jango head so I just glued the helmet on the head :p

I'll try to get more pictures like the first one since it looks the best.

Good work Korbra. The dancing cody was priceless. You did some excellent work on them. I thought they were actual hasbro product until I read your caption.

The Mando looks excellent as is I dont think you have to do anything more to it. the claw marks are a great touch. excellent work. Now the question remains... when are you going to finish those Jedi????
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra's Customs
Post by: CommanderKorbra on April 10, 2006, 06:06 PM
:) Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about them. I'm anxious to finish the male in half robes half armor and the twilek female in that dress thing. Here is the WIP line up for those of you wondering:

1 - Kal Skirata - all I need to do is paint the jetpack and one more peice of the armor. It doesn't have a picture atm.
2 - Jodo Kast - some touch up on the blue white and yellow and then dullcoat

I can get both of those done tonight

3 - Custom Legion Clone Commander - I need a pauldren for him and he'll be done EDIT: Ooops, meant kama, sorry about that
4 - Commander Cody - waiting on another Hasbro cody and bantha5's kit for some special Cody parts like the antenna and stuff. Then paint and he'll be done aswell.

and then comes the custom jedi and finally a remake of that yellow female mandalorian using new parts and less sculpey. Got my hands full huh? It kind of feels like I'm at work, tons of stuff almost finished but not quite lol ;D

It looks good, but I have to admit on this one I'd probably try to make the shades of black a bit differnet on jumpsuit vs. the armor.  Maybe a shade of gray to separate the two?  The visor looks very good too.

Ok CHEWIE. I actually wanted to make the armor different form the suit but Karen Traviss said that the whole suit and all of the armor was matte black. Maybe I'll do a really dark gray like you suggested.

The Mando looks really good.  I like the way you were able to bring the "metal" through with the paint job.  I love the perspective photo of the Mando v. clone.  Very nice photography!

Thanks BrentS. I'm glad you were able to tell it was a perspective photo of the two fighting. I was afraid someoen would think I just couldn't take a clear pic :P I'm actually enjoying this one paint I fund that I used on the black mando. It's called steel and its good for just plain mando armor or armor when you want to show real looking damage or scratches. The only bad thing is that the bottle I have is enamal and not acrylic. Thanks again for your comments.

Still haven't got my 4.4 case from EE, seen any clones in stores, or got my Bantha5 kit in the mail. As soon as one of those happens then I can finish up Cody. Can't wait 8)

Cody is coming right along. Still need a fitting removable helmet and I have to add the armband that he is holding. Then comes the more accurate paint. He still has  shoulder articulation so I'm happy :)

Cody almost completed, need to finish his helmet. Guees what? I've got nothing to do for the rest of the weekend but customize... and that means a big update Sunday night! Yay! Since so many on my WIP bench are practically done, I've started a new custom. I'll quote form RS:

Quote
Once again, I'll be making a female mandalorian. Another Yellow one so that I can compare them most likely. My main goals are to make an improved custom with more articulation, better armor and less sculpey and a fitting helmet.

Here is a picture of the older version:
I thought it was pretty good but my painting and sculpting skills have gotten better and I have more parts to use now then I did back then.

What I really need is  Ideas on is the thighs (upper legs above knees) and the crotch area. I was thinking Jango crotch or Boba crotch but I don't know.  Oh and ideas for a chest would help too. I've got a few female parts in a deal that I'm working on right now... but your ideas for what torsos to use are welcome. Here is what I have so far:
I don't plan on using those legs because they look too short for some reason.
Here is the ref pic that I'll be using.
So, ideas on what other parts to use are needed. And if anyone can trade me a slave leia head, #33 CC kama, and a ROTS Dooku cape, that'd be fantastic aswell. Updates to come!

Another quote from RS...

Quote
(http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/2486/img12414rv.jpg)
This is how I made the arms. Far better than the arms on the older figure if you ask me. More articulation and less sculpey. Made from XD Army figure arms and tank gunner hands. Cut the shoulder pads off of the snap on Jango armor and got the snap on gauntlets from that same figure.
Arms, helmet, lower legs are ready to be painted I guess. Still need slave leia head, #33 CC kama, and a ROTS Dooku cape. And of course any ideas for the torso, crotch, and upper legs. :)

Post by: CommanderKorbra on April 27, 2006, 06:32 PM
Quoted from my thread on RS again. Can't really see it in the picture but I put a ton of effort into these.  First finding the parts and putting them together. Then I painted the flightsuit dolphin gray. Painted the armor yellow and gave it a very slight goldish water wash. Then a very small white drybrush on the flightsuit. Better than the older custom's arms for sure!

Quote
*More boiling and popping and testing out things*

Added some desperate needs to my tradelist for this custom. Finished the arms and the helmet is going to be ready tomarrow.

Im working on a versoin of this one myself, and I seem to be running into the same stumbling blocks as you. I started out with a different base body though. So far its looking excellent. The detail in those arms is excellent. I really want to see this one finished.

There is so little female fodder available, making some of these is a lot harder than making males.

Thanks Chewie and Ron!

I agree Darth_Ennis. It is alot harder to make one of these than it seems. You know I like those arms alot but when I put them next to the legs and pelvis that I have, they seem to big. Guess I'll have to sand them down and repaint later. Oh and make sure you post pics of your female mando when you are done, ok? ;D

Aw Ennis :( I also experianced a tiny setback on my female mandalorian. Comparing the arms to my last female mando arms, a regular mando arms and even a wookie, they seem huge. Ive decided to save the arms and eventually use them on another yellow and gray mandorian some time in the future. Perhaps a male fellow clan member of my female mando ;) I think what Im going to do is dremel off the shoulder armor and gauntlets from a new saga fett and glue em onto a good articulated female arm. Itll be smaller that way and will look better when completed. I probably shouldve waited to paint and stuff untill i actually had the complete figure in my hands but I was so anxious :P

Well I still cant find the freaking camera lol. Ill just say that its a jedi and 2 mandalorians in the update as well as some more parts of the female mando. Prolly more to add by the time I find the dumb camera. Hope my dad didnt accidently take it home with him when he came over! Ill have to call...

Oh and I think I posted it before, but deviantart has some good mando pics, both male and female. There is one that someone did for another mandalorian fan - "resiliant" and it looks so freakin awesome that I did a custom of one of them, and thats one of the mandos in the update. Theres also a cool camo mando thats awesome.

Cant wait to get my WIP slate done and be able to show you all the mandos Ive been working on last week and this week. And that articulated Commander Cody.

Oh and last thing - if any of yall would like to help me finish up some of these customs, I could really use these parts. Thank you so much fellow JD'ers!!! Yall rock!!! :)

2 Clone Commander Kamas, a premade soft goods kama attached to a clone belt by someone who knows what they are doing, (unlike me ;)) Assajj Ventress Torso from the Jedi VS Sith battlepack, Luminara Unduli arms, POTF Slave Leia head, Ewok Celebration Leia head including the soft goods hair, a ROTS Dooku soft goods cape, 3 ROTS Captain Antilles head and neckposts, and finally the head and poncho of a child Boba Fett Kamino Escape.

This actually isn't as hard as you may think.

I had a few of the Darth Maul capes from the Episode 1 Accessory packs, so I cut one up. I cut off the skirt from the belt that was on the ARC and glued on two small strips of the Maul cape in their place. It was a first attempt at doing something like this, I had never worked with fabric before. But I'm pretty happy with the results.

Well, I have good news and bad news concerning my first attempt at a Femando. The bad news is i have tossed the one I was working on into my box of failed experiments, never to be seen again. :-[

The good news is that Ive started on another, and its coming along better than the first one. Im going to hope to have some WIPs up soon. How are things coming along on your end?

I read over on RS that you needed a Slave leia head. if you are still in need I have an extra.

BTW Jokabofe that ARC is awesome, Ive never seen that one before. The soft goods on that look realy sweet.

Seeing as how there are so many people doing Mandos these days I think we should do a post your Mando thread that way we could have them all in one place. What do you guys think?

That's funny you say that, because that's the one I made after you said that the soft goods on my other ARC came out good - the one that didn't have any soft goods  ;)

Nice Mandalorians  :D

You really blended the armor onto the Saga2 Boba Fett.  I initially thought you had majorly retooled one of the Jango Fett figure's legs, but then I realized that you sculpted them.  Excellent job.  The paint schemes work well too.  Very original

I really love the Twi Lek figure.  Its my favorite soecies of alien, well one of them anyway.  Thats a really great figure.  The Mandalorains are outstanding as well.  The beige one is my fave, but both are fine works for sure!

I agree, I like the Mando's but the Twi'lek is the gem of the group for me.  Just a cool, different figure.  I'd suggest a wash on his skin too and a dot on his eyes, unless he's a blind Jedi.

Title: Re: CommanderKorbra Customs - Update May 10th
Post by: CommanderKorbra on May 12, 2006, 07:33 PM
Thanks guys. I guess you could say the twilek was a team effort. Rolla Jedi did some work on a Darth Maul figure and then got bored of the guy. When Rolla was selling the figures here for like $2 each I decided to buy the incomplete custom and see what I could make out of it. I smoothed down rough parts, Did a bit of Sculpting, primed the entire thing and then painted him. Thanks for the ideas of the wash and of course some eyeballs for him :P. I almost forgot about them. If anyone was wondering about the black and blue mando, he is supossed to be some mando that was recruited by jando to help him train clones. This guy wears some clone armor and some mando armor. I had to fill in his back with sculpey since the guy was orginally one of those Jangos with the huge noise making jetpack. And you all might of guessed, but the tanish whatever mando is supossed to be Kal Skirata.

Thanks for the comments guys, and there should be one or two more updates before next weekend if I can get some of the parts I need and finish up a few more customs. Later

Thanks Rola ;)

Here is a quick update. I saw Fritz's modified helicopters and loved 'em. Went to Target looking for some figures to customize and instead found on eof the helicopters on sale for $9. It is now turning into a Mandalorian Low Altitude Heavy Artillery Troop Transport. So far it is modified, super glued, and primed and I'm working on the regular paint job now. I also decided to make a Mando Pilot to go with the ship. He's also all put together and just waiting to be painted. So everything will probably be dullcoated and ready for pics Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday since I get Tueday off. I'm really excited about it, so I hope you all like them when I come and show em off!

Later.

Hmmm.... I would suggest using matte acrylic sealer spray from Walmart, it's in the arts/crafts section and is in a bottle just like spray paint.  Just don't spray too close to the figure.

He's in my WIP box. I got kind of discouraged working on him so I stuck him in the box and went back to mandos. Might try to finish him up after Good To Go Customs (http://www.goodtogocustoms.com) opens up their shop and sells some cody helms that fit the atte gunner head.

About the ship: I've got it in mostly the same colors as my mando pilot at the moment. I'm not sure if it looks too colorful though, so I'm thinking about taking off all the red and yellow parts and just leaving the green. What do you all think?

Definitely not done. Let's just say it looks so ugly at the moment because I'm playing with ideas on how to paint it ;) I think I'll keep the green parts, and the mando skull I did on the wing... and fix up the letters on that mando phrase. But other than that I need ideas on what to paint. I was thinking maybe name the ship something and paint it on the doors. Maybe paint a female mando somewhere but then it might get too crowded. I dunno. And in case anyone wonders: No, that table isn't my painting area :) I just set the ship up there for pics.

Oh and remember I got the idea on how to modify the ship from Fritz!

Whew!  I was worried that you'd use that table to paint on!  I can sleep now.   :P

I like the lightsaber count, but it should probably be a bit smaller, and under the cockpit canopy edge, on the side, similar to where fighter aces post their kill count.

The large Mando skull looks great, but I'm not so sure the Mandalorians would advertise so openly.  Same goes for the writing on the side about beating Jedi ass, and the T visor.  Unless it's an Air Mando "Anywhere-but-the-outer-rim-for-299-credits!" transport, it just seems a little over the top to me.  If you were to write anything on it, I think limiting it to a much smaller word or two, in Aurebesch would look better in my opinion.

Okay, Good suggestions there :) I really was just playing around seeing what I could paint and how it looked.  I didn't really know where to put the lightsaber count but that is what I was going for - a kill count like you see on the fighters or on the aircraft carriers. I can limit and take away what I paint on it now but I do want it to have a mandalorian feel. Not just a, "Hey there's a clone ship custom thingie"

My one and only suggestion is to paint that yellow hose. It really stands out in a bad way compared to the rest of the ship. It doesn't seem to Star Wars-ish.

;) Yep, I know. I've still got a lot of painting to do and that was one of the things. I think it'll look more starwarsy if its like a combo and black and gray right?

I like the idea and the color scheme. I don't like the paint job however. Very messy feeling. I would suggest not using craft store paints and go for something a little higher quality such as GameWorkshop or Tamyia paints. It really helps getting that movie quality by using the right paints. A good set of high quality paint brushes really makes it easy to get great results. $3-4 a piece from a art supply store is a good investment.

Next, I would use some masking tape when trying to make straight lines. It just makes life so much easier when making straight lines. Finally, I would make all the pictures, lightsaber count and wording in the computer and print them out using clear custom decal paper. You can get some great detail this way and get things to look exactly the way you want them before appling them to the ship. The wording on the side of the ship could be done in some crazy mandolorian font and made to look like it was painted on. It's a really good idea but just needs to be cleaned up some.

Thanks Phruby but I tried to make it clear this is very very much still a WIP and I didn't really want to show anyone yet. But I got a PM so I figured what the heck and threw up these pictures. And lol at your comments on the straight lines and paint brushes... I do use the type of brushes you mentioned and masking tape. Just haven't really tried to paint the line straight yet when I'm still figuring how I want this thing to look ;) Don't worry, it'll look 400% better when I'm really ready to show it here.

Cool. It's going to be very cool if I know your customs. Anyway, give some though to using that decal paper. It will make those logos look fantastic.

It comes with software to make and print out the drawings and I think three pieces of paper.

i think it's a great idea and concept. you might try masking off the ship next time before you paint, so you get more crisp and defined lines.

the light saber count is very cool, i agree that it could be a bit smaller, and mabey black and white,. stencil looking, ya know.

i like the big mandalore skull. if it is a stealth descreet ship then they may not advertise like that, but if it's a battle insertion type ship then i would go with a couple mandalore skulls on it. the kind of thing that amnnounces mandalorian prescence and that they are not to be messed with......

over all great concept. i'd love to see a pic of the ship manned with mandalorians.

good work, thanks for sharing~!

It's looking pretty good there, C_K. I think that it'll look a lot better finished and with some Mandos in it. One thing I might suggest though, is to maybe change the hull to a primer gray to better get a Mando look- most Mando jumpsuits are grey. Just a suggestion.

I love the lightsaber Kill marks, those are the best. ;D I say paint it up to look like your pilot. Thats what I would do anyway. I dont know if Id keep the Mando helmet on the other side, I think another skull would look better. I can't wait to see what you do with it when youre done. I got the last one of these at my local Target for 6.00. I too will be following In Fritzkreigs footsteps. I am really pushing to make a rescue transport with mine. Unfortunately I just havent had the time to customise lately.

Thanks guys. I think I will change the ship to gray.  Although the white might be good once it's all battledamaged up and dullcoated.  I got some more work done on it tonight including  practically finishing the green parts.

Oh and Ennis, the reason I put the helmet on that one wing instead of another skull was because I got lazy, lol.

I like the color scheme, although I would probably give it a darker shade of grey and maybe another lighter, contrasting color (I'm thinking something like Jango's Slave 1, but obviously with different colors).
I really like the "Bantha" Skull (or whatever it's called), it looks very sharp.
I don't think I would put a Mando helmet on the wing though.  Maybe Boba Fett's "Wheat" symbol or something like that.

The writing on the side and the lightsaber "kill" marks look awesome, I would leave them as is  ;D

I like the Mando Scout's camo armor, it looks like it took a while to do, but it came out very well.  The parts choice is very well done, I really like the Djas Puhr legs for the Mando.

The Djas Puhr (I forget the laien species name) looks cool too, I still need to make one of these Battle-armor Jedis  :-\/  The only thing that I would do to him would be to paint his outer tunic a different color, just to add a bit more color to the figure.  Maybe a dark orange similar to his armor markings.

Well I haven't had much time to customize lately but I did sculpt some mando armor onto a Punisher Marvel showdown figure, he's pretty sweet. I edited the arms to have better articulation and I've started paining him using ref that I found on deviantart. It's a camo color scheme. I also finished around 4 trades and got lots of good G.I.joe heads that fit under mando helmets, a few grevous body guards, some random mando guns and fodder, and a few random acessories. Oh and I checked the Dollar Tree and got a few cheapo figs. I can't use the entire figures but alot of the accessories and pouches looks good. The heads could work on some customs too. I'll update maybe tomorrow with the completed camo mandalorian. After that I'm going to work solidly on my Open Seasons Jango and the Mandalorian LA-HA-TT.

Random notes: Finished Triple Zero and saw the pic of the new Windu battlepack. Both freaking awesome :D

Somehow I missed this one, CK.

The Mando Scout looks pretty good- I like that you used an evergreen for your base camo to stray away from an earth olivedrab. The face paint looks good too. The overall custom itself looks like it took you a long time- the camo application looks flawless.

CW Jedi- I like the Djas Phur head, it looks good. One thing- maybe paint the armor plain white? Or maybe repaint the tunic to go better with the orange armor.

Just a few suggestions, good customs overall. Your Punisher Mando sounds interesting.

The parts work really well together. I don't know if I care for the Grease paint on the face though. The Camo Patern came out pretty well although it seems a little Bright, mabey try muting it w/ a brown wash.

Keep up the great work,

Fritzkrieg

Thanks to both of you. I wanted to do another "no pic update" real quick. I resumed work on my v 2 female mandalorian and I am very very excited to say that I've found all the parts I need, and they all fit together great!!!! The only bad thing is that I had to tear up v1. Ah well. What I'm planning to do before I paint and glue her together is cast or get someone to cast the parts. Then I'll need to edit the sculpt justa  tiny bit in the center of the armor and then get it recasted. Finally I'll glue it and paint and take pics of. Might take some pics before I do all of this, just to prove I'm not joking lol.

Seems to be the time to pull out old WIPs for me. I pulled out Cody and finished him except for gluing the tank gunner head on, battle damaging the backside of him, and finding a helmet.

And finally about that Marvel Showdown fig with sculpted mando armor - he's almost complete. I've got to do some touch ups on him and then he'll be ready to show off.

So this means that by next weekend I'll do an update with Commander Cody minus a helmet, the marvel mando, and some more wips of the female mando. Possibly even the cody look alike Shadow Trooper Commander. :)

I would like to hear the recipe for this one. The chest looks like Luminara but I'm drawing a blank on the rest of it.

Title: Re: CommanderKorbra's Customs, female mando v2 update with pics page 9
Post by: CommanderKorbra on June 21, 2006, 04:30 PM
Lets see if I can remeber how I made it lol.

*Helmet was from Glassman6. AWESOME :)
*Head, POTF2 Slave Leia with baid taken out and sculpey+thread put in it's place. Then painted hair and thread black.
*Chest, Highly modded Luminara Unduli with lots of sculpey.
*Upper arms are Luminara with added Boba Fett shoulder armor.
*Gauntlets are a mass or the lminara gauntlets, Jango Fett gauntlets, super glue, and sculpey. I wanted to keep the articulation there or else I'd have just kept the jango gauntlets how they were.
*One hand is VTSC Han's and the other is a Jango hand.
*Pelvis and upper legs are from Pilot Jango and I sculpeyed a crotch armor on there.
*Lower legs and feet are from this year's saga Boba Fett.

Took a lot of thinking and  brainstorming and a fair amount of just sitting and looking at my fodder to come up with this recepie. But I'm not so sure I could do it all again, so that's why I wanted to get some of it casted before I glue her all together and paint her up. :)

Thanks for your comments Ennis, I was hoping you'd drop by and take a look. Awesome job on your female mando by the way.

EDIT: OOPS left some out...
*Cape is a highly modded Count Dooku cape
* Kama thing was made from a clone belt, a holster off a Dollar Tree figure and the back was part of Obi Wan's tunic. This was one of the things I couldn't figure out what to use at first and just by playing with my fodder I came up with this design. It's a little shorter than a clone kama so I think it looks a bit better than the v1 in that respect.

Extra Bacara Body laying around but I wanted to use it, so I grabbed a Tank Gunner Pauldren, a cut up clone belt, a holster from a cheapo figure, and a rope coil from a cheapo figure. Your FemMando looks like it's coming along well, I apologize again for not being able to help you out with the kama. Looking forward to seeing her finished.

Cmdr. Cody's body look really nice with the mods and the paint jobs, as well as the helmet, but the face's just not doing it for me. With Cody's headsculpt now, I've gotten accustomed to seeing Cody's head respectively with his body. I just think that the ATTE Gunner head just doesn't look anything like the good ol' Commander.

The accesories look very neat and clean on the Bacara body, looks like a clone Hasbro would make. I've always despised the Bacara body, but it looks okay here.

Keep up the good work!

Hey thanks Darth. No problem about the clone kama, this one I came up with works alot better imo. And I was thinking almost the same thing about Cody's head. It looks like a baby face to me lol. I don't like Hasbro's Cody head though because it's so small. Maybe one of the Evo heads will work for cody? Oh and I always hated the Bacara body too, with the lame articulation and the silly action feature but I figured it could work for this custom. Thanks for all the comments :)

EDIT: And I've got a update filled day tomorrow too - camo mando, Alternate version of Count Dooku, and MAYBE I'll finish Open Seasons Jango Fett. :) I'm liking all the time summer gives me to customize lol.

Alternate Universe Dooku/Random Sith Senator almost complete. Here's the finished Camo mando. Made from a Marvel Legends Showdown Punisher and sculpey3. Lots of work but I think it looks cool. Only slightly taller than my other mandos, so this guy is prolly 4 inches instead of 3 3/4. Based on this pic:

Used to be I could just post some pics and within the next few hours you'd have lots of helpful feedback from all kinds of other customizers. Now I post 4 or 5 updates in a row and get zero feedback on the last 4, within a time period of about 3 days. I'm not trying to make you come and say good job, I'm trying to get people to come give advice, feedback, ask questions, and give constructive critism... but that person who says it looks good is welcome too ;)

The early part of the week is the best time for people to commnet when you post towards the end of hte week, people are busy at work, and I just skim at the end of the week mostly.

That  Drawing is incredible, it looks great,  so does the punisher mando. Looks really cool I'd say use olive greens for the green and some darker colors for camo, and then weather accordingly.

I gotta say, that is one sweet looking Cody. One of the best ive seen actually.

He looks like he's been through hell and back, as he SHOULD. Excellent work my man.

Excellent paint job on that Punisher Mando. HTe only thing that really throws it off, at least in my opinion, is the body. Its no offense to your skills, thats just a horrible body. All I want to know is what happend with that fig? All the rest look great, why did old Frank get the shaft?

The details that you put on it are great the chest armor is especially well done.

the Dooku looks good too. Id call that one " Sith Training Dooku" ;D
The Ki ADi arms work well with that body. The design is pretty good on this one.

Keep em coming.

Cool Cody and Fem-Mando.  the Punisher is great to.  I like the Pilot Mando, Punisher Mando and the Fem Mando more then your other Mandos because they are not just repaints (but the repaints are clean and well done) so to me it looks like more effort was put into them as their paint apps are great to.

When is your next updat for the Mando Dropship?  I am dying to see how it'll turn out.

After that you all can help me name the ship and see what kind of mando saying i should put on it maybe. Then I'll weather it and it'll be done  8)

Whew I'm glad its the beggining of the week so maybe I'll get some more feedback :P

BTW, OT kinda: Star Wars Empire at War is so awesome in space battles.

And Ennis as for why I used the punisher body, I just thought the head would look cool and I wanted to try sculpting mando armor on a very articulated body.

Another Mandalorian I did. This was just a simple one to use of the old mando body I had in my fodder bin. I added some gear from a dollar tree figure medic, so maybe this is a mandalorian medic? Oh and incase you couldn't tell, the mando isn't really as bright as it looks in the pictures... the flash kind of screwed them up. Maybe some new pics tomorrow in the sunlight. :) Comments VERY welcome.

I like all the gear you added, but i think the red color is too bright for a Mando. I would suggest weathering him a little.

Like I said, it's the flash. I've weathered him with some scratches, black paint, and metal colored paint already so I think that's enough. Thanks though :) btw rorron check your pms.

i like this mando. all the extra gear goes really well with the figure. the weathering looks good, and though the red isn't a traditional mando color, i think it works really well for this figure. good job.

it'd be cool to see a mando team, like seals, ithink this figure would be cool in some type of group like that. medic, explosives, sniper, engenieer, communications, weapons, team leader, ect....

I think Jedistyle is on to something. It would be a great crew for that dropship you made.

I kinda like this guy, Im such a sucker for black and red.I think a couple more pouches like say on his chest or so and maybe some kind of symbol would make him stand out more as a medic. But thats just what I'd do.

Its ironic actually I have a mando myself that is almost exactly this color scheme. It's really wild because its the exact same figure too. I've never posted him though. So aparantly great minds think alike.

Good job.

Quick Update, Mando ship done and about to be dullcoated. The second mandalorian in the Mandalore vs Mandalore picture is almost done. And finally, you sadly wont be hearing anymore about my female mandalorian untill the end of summer. By that time I (hopefully) will ahve had enough time to cast her 4 times(each time with a few variations) and paint her 4 different schemes. I'll then have a 4 person squad of goodlooking female mandalorians :P I think it'll be really cool if my casting stuff comes in and everything goes as planned.

Pics of dropship soon.

Here are some pictures of the dropship with my Mando army (still working on the army of course). Also some pics of the ship by itself. Yes, I know the window pannels on the cockpit are frosted; I like it that way. I might try again later outside because some of these pics aren't that focused. And most of them have tons of stuff in the background. Ah well, LMKWYT :P   Oops, one mroe thing: The name is Parjir Tome which means win together in mandalorian and I wrote it in Aurebesh.

As stated elsewhere I really love the theme here.  Also I hadn't mentioned how well I like the painted sabers on the hull of the craft.  Great kill score.  THats creative and its in keeping with the Mando code.

On a side note one small detail and its not your fault, too bad there is no recognizable Mando alphabet that could have been substituted for the english alphabet.  again this could b=not be helped.  Great idea.

w00t! After months of waiting for I-dunno-what, I've finally order my casting supplies! From smooth-on.com I got the Smooth-Cast 45D and 60D, and the Smooth-Sil 920. Then from Micromark.com some of the Silicone Rubber stuff. Now once it gets in I'll start casting some parts to test it out, then I'll make some casts of misc stuff I needed copies of and once I feel confident enough, I'll move into getting copies of the female mando parts. And after that comes the female mando sqaud :):):) Maybe even get some money back by selling a few things on ebay later. Well that's all for now.

*excited* ;D

Oh yea Im still excited even now 8 days ago from the last post lol. Got an email and the expected date of delivery on the molding stuff from micromark is Tuesday - tomorrow! Smooth on should be right behind that I guess. Also finally found a HFG battlepack and didnt have to pay scalper prices for it on ebay. And lastly I finished E3 Revenge of the Sith for PS2 and had a blast. Lots of cool concept art I might use to make a few jedi or clones. ;D

Okay yea I know boring post for anyone not exactly in my position but Ive been wanting that casting stuff for a while and finally got it ordered and coming to my door. Feels great. :D

Oh yea and I got my Adult-Child-Infant CPR class out of the way saturday. I was dreading that but it wasnt bad at all.

And for a customizing update, Im working on one of the jedi boil n pops i posted like on page 4 of this thread. Also about done with a BF2 Sharpshooter.

I may be wrong but in my case, I ordered the resin from Micromark and the Silicon Molding materials from Smooth-sil.  So I'm curious if you ordered the opposite?  I think both sites sell both types of materials.  Anyway, at least someone put a post in between your updates  ;D
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra' Customs - Update July 10 - Casting supplies get here tomorr
Post by: CommanderKorbra on July 10, 2006, 06:13 PM
Yep at least one person did. Now you can be the second  :P

I got the RTV Sillicone rubber stuff for the 2 part mols from Micromark and then got the Smooth sil for 1 peice molds along with smooth cast 45D and 60D from smooth on. Micromark seems to be the faster on processing and letting you know whats goign on and accually deliving everything. But that's fine because I can work on molding things while I wait for the stuff from smooth on.

I can't wait to get started! I'm reading some of glassman's posts on the subject and reading what micromark sent in my package. Also sanded down what I was going to mold and got it all smooth. Maybe by tomorrow night I'll have an update with a pic of the mold for the female mando torso. There's a little baggie of things I plan to mold and cast sitting in my work area so this time period is going to be very exciting for me.
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra' Customs - Update July 10 - Casting supplies get here tomorr
Post by: CommanderKorbra on July 11, 2006, 12:11 PM
Laidout everything and tried my hand at making my first mold this morning. Its pretty straightforward but I didn't make enough of the stuff. And I kind of made too many air bubbles. But this doesnt really matter because I didn't even make enough to fill the mold box a quater of the way. Basically just have a bottom to the mold and now 4 hours have passed so its ready to make some more stuff and create the first half of the mold. After 4 hours I cover it with vaseline and make enough to fill the second half of the mold. And then tonight if there still enough time left I might try to put some resin in there and let it sure overnight. Wish me luck guys :)

EDIT: Got that next part done and now have all the parts half way in the mold and half out. To tell the truth I'm nt sure if it's going to work. I worked a little too fast and parts sunk into the mold a bit more than I think they should've. Oh well, I'll see how it looks later when I get the entire thing ready to use.

EDIT 2: Coming out pretty good I think. The smooth on stuff got here so I used some on the smooth sil 920 and make a fe molds. I think most of the stuff went onto the cardboard instead of staying on the helmets and heads though. And there were lots of bubbles so we'll see how well that turns out. Got the vaseline on my 2 part mold and poured the ohter half. About and hour into drying i accidently got my elbow into it but luckily not deep. If anything it just screwed the top half of the mold and ill remake it. Oh and the smooth sil 920 is frickin thick, kinda hard to work with. I dont like it being completely transparent on both parts A and B either because you can't really tell if they are mixed well or not. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT?!? I'M JUST HAPPY I CAN FINALLY START MOLDING AND CASTING STUFF! MAJOR WOOT LOL

EDIT 3:Should have pics of the molds up tomorrow and maybe some pics of my first try at casting

EDIT 4: All the molds dried, The sillicone one looks to be okay but I don't know how well the joints will work on the ocmpleted custom. The smooth sil 920 molds were mostly too thin and/or had airbubbles that made a hole in the mold so that was sadly a waste. I can't afford to waste $100 worth of stuff so I'd better get my butt in gear lol. Just wasted some 45D too! Sheesh that stuff's potlife is fast. It flows good though so I guess the only bad thing was that I made too much.
Notes to self :)
1. Make less of the liquid plastic since it cures fast
2. Try out the idea to get the one peice molds thicker
3. If any of the 2 part mold peices dont come out right, try to remold them I guess.
4. Use less sillicone in the 2 part molds so its not wasted.

One part molds, I would guess, would act just like latex molds. Brush it on with a crap brush.
Let that layer dry, then do another layer let dry and repeat till you have 3 layers good and ready, then pop the piece on out. :D
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra' Customs - Update July 11 - Trying my hand at making a mold
Post by: Glassman6 on July 11, 2006, 10:36 PM
Stick with it Kobra, my first 2 part mold was the worst!!!!!
I had bubbles, I didnt use enough releaser, it stuck to the figure, i ended up
having to scrape off all the dried mold material.

My second, a year later cause i was that discouraged, was crap too. But i learned from my mistakes.
So keep at it... you gotta start somewhere.

The clear mold may be an illusion.  The bubbles may be inside the silicone. SO dont toss it yet.

Thanks smarty. Thank you Glassman for the encouragement. I just had a good night's sleep and I'm ready to tackle everything again. Glassman your Iron cow prod toturial really helps. Great job on that. ;D As I did yesterday instead of posting 5 or 6 times I'll just edit this post if anyone wants to see what exactly i do as the day progresses.  8)

EDIT: Made some 60D and accually I made too much of it again. Not as much as last time though. Man last time I wasted a ton eck. Okay anyways I used the 60D to re-do the legs and torso of the female mando since the 45D torsos and legs had big air bubbles in them. Also put some 60D in a clone neckpost and a captain Antilles head and then right when I started to pour into the clone head mold the 60D started curing. I guess from now on I'm going to mkae one spoonfull of each part (A and B) and then mix em and see how far that goes. One thing I noticed if you are wearing viynl gloves while working with the 45D or 60D and it starts to cure, it'll feel warm... weird lol.

EDIT2: Planning on remolding a few things. I've got pics of everything I've done so far that I'll post later too.

EDIT3: The torso screwed up again from an air bubble. I'm thinking even though I let both parts sit for a second that when I mash them togteher I mess em up. Legs came out fine as well as the clone neckpost.
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra' Customs - Update July 12 - Molding and Casting Day 2!
Post by: Glassman6 on July 12, 2006, 11:02 AM
Dont try to do too many parts at the same time.
Learn the material first, then when you are used to the cure times, then attack
more pieces at once.

Just casue the mold has arms, legs and torso, doesnt mean you have to cast all at the same time.

Try letting it cure a bit longer before you flip the mold half.

I do 1 or 2 spoonfulls at a time. Again, once you get used to how much you need, it will become second nature to you.

And the heat... Chemisty 101, chemical reaction producing heat... And we are playing with this stuff!!
When you mix alot, it really gets hot.

Post by: CommanderKorbra on July 12, 2006, 12:23 PM
Thanks again Glass. I'm really excited you are posting tips and stuff for me cause you are THE MAN at casting stuff. I did what you said and only tried the gauntlets and a mandalorian helmet this time. And I only used about half a spoonful so I wasted little to none. Oh and when I flipped it this time, I'm not positive but I think I waited long enough. I just don't want to wait so long that it gels up and wont fuse together. We'll see in about 30 mins.

EDIT:
-Rangefinder happened to fill in from all the excess lol. Mandalorian helmet and the gauntlets were good but no matter what I do the fingers on the hands dont seem to want to cast. All my tries so far have been fine except for the fingers.
-Also I'm working on a new way to make the one peice molds. Accually its mostly glassman's idea but instead of just leaving the helm upside down on the spruce attached to cardboard, I made a lego square around the helm so when I pour the mold in it doesnt all spread out on the cardboard. So thats good. Only problem will be if the mold ends up being too thick instead of too thin like last time.
-Will make a mold of 2 different sets of legs and one jetpack tomorrow. Might remold some of the helmets and heads if the test version works.
-Overall I'm getting some good stuff so far. I did waste about a half a bathroom cup so far of the resin but I shouldnt be wastingas much anymore sicne I do small bits at a time now.

EDIT2: Made that other mold I was talking about. Well not the whole thing, only the first half. Around 10 PM tonight I'll prolly have all the molds I made today completed and will pour in some plastic to sit overnight.

Sounds like a fun day of trial and error.  Hopefully when its all said and done you can post some "lessons learned" for all the newbie mold makers.
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra' Customs - Update July 12 - Molding and Casting Day 2!
Post by: CommanderKorbra on July 12, 2006, 07:19 PM
Yes, That's why I'm sort of making notes and taking pics as I go along. Hopefully I'll have enough stuff at the end of day 3 where I can post a good amount of stuff I learned. Not necisarily (wtf, sp?) a toturial because I'm far from a master, but maybe some little things to help newbies like I was (and still am lol).

Right now I'm waiting on the 1st half of a two part mold to dry and the 1st part of a 1 part mold to dry. I didn't make enough the first time so its gotta dry before I make some more and pour it in.

As for what I've got so far - Enough parts to make the top half of a female mandalorian. They have some sculpey in some places where I made a newbie caster mistake and got some air bubbles. Also they dont have holes where the joints will go yet. And I've got some parts for a second female mandalorian. Also have some casted heads and necks and one mando helmet. Good so far I guess :) Liking all the experiance I'm getting.

EDIT: Finished up my second 2 part mold and my 6th, 7th, and 8th 1 peice molds. I think All of them turned out okay but by time they are dry I'll be fast asleep so they'll be sitting overnight.

DAY 3 :)

Well I woke up and tried to pry apart my 2 part mold and it wasnt easy. I think the vaseline dried overnight or something because I know I put a ton of that stuff in the mold. Still works fine though.

As for the 1 peice molds - well they ended up being too thick. I dunno whats worse, having a good strong mold where you can't get the part out because its so thick or having a really weak mold that you could tear to shreds any second.  ??? Oh well.

My plans for today: cast the legs a few times and maybe try to get a good solid cast of the torso. Also cast the hands a few times since all the hands ive made so far didnt have any fingers.

Oh and kind of like the random update on page 12 about random stuff - I'm going to North Carolina next week to our cabin so I'll maybe be able to work on some customs while we're up there but maybe not. One thing I know is the area used to have a good hobby store. Although now that I think about it, I think it closed down. Whatever. They still havea  good walmart that was packed at last years black thursday lol. And what was the other thing I was goign to say... (sorry I just got up :p) Oh yea check out RS everyone is telling this b0bafett77 character that he'll be as good as Ricky UK in a few years and that he's goign to be a customizing legend. Heh, he's already a legend but not in the good way haha.

You can use a razor and cut the 1 piece mold to all for demolding.  I've done this here:

that allows me to demold a piece like this:

I'm sorry, I don't understand. Do you mean to cut the mold all up once you've used it one time? So that you cna't use it again?

Just casted the legs and they came out perfect! (well to my standards anyways) so I'm really happy. One of the hands I casted screwed up again but the other one was perfect too. Even had all 5 fingers  :P The clone head had a little air bubble in the back but nobody should ever see that so its fine too. YAY. Oh and I mixed up the perfect amount. Think I'm getting the hang of things finally.

EDIT: Think I jinxed myself. Made a tad too much again. I was able to use most of what I made but some things - namely the hands messed up again. But I did get it in the female mando torso and I think it worked fine. So all sucessfull except the hands and made alittle too much.(I'm reassuring myself lol)

incredibly well done! I'm way too scared to try my hand in making molds! What an endeavour! It just makes me think about jango legs. If ever I did go into casting, I would modify a pair of VOTC boba legs to make them like jango's and make casts, heck I'd make VOTC boba fett casts :P

Thanks guys. At the moment I'm kinda tinkering around with the first compltel cast and seeing how I'm going to put all the parts together. This first one wont have that great of articulation yet Since I don't really have the hang of making all the joints fit yet. But its only the first version so... yea.

I'll try to get this first one painted and maybe the second one put together in NC

Post by: CommanderKorbra on July 14, 2006, 10:48 PM
Thank you Ennis :) The first casted mando wont have hardly any articulation because I couldn't get it to work right >:( The second one will have mostly wivel joints but maybe a few ball joined borrowed form a g.i.joe :) So expect:

1 in the squad is all original parts and it's going to be the yellow female mando from insider. This is the one you've all seen pics of already.
2 is going to be all casted parts except for the head and is going to be an original color scheme. low articulation.
3 is going to be like 2 except a different scheme and hopefully better articulation
And finally 4 is going to be the best of the casted ones and is most likely going to be the red female mando from insider. Will borrow G.I.joe parts for this one .

 ;D
And maybe more after that of course, but this is all I hope to get before I run out of materials for casting. Perhaps a few casts to sell here and there and maybe enough parts to make a custom and sell it on ebay to get some money back for new supplies. Pretty sure yall will like the squad when they're done...

Oh and I finished a BF2 Clone Sharpshooter today but didn't get pics before it got dark. Pics in the morning.

CK,  on the mold, You should try and make a locking piece on each corner.
If one is lined up, there is nothing to stop the top half of the mold from swiveling
and messing up the lower leg pieces.
If there are multiple locking holes, there is less chance it wil move.

Your clone looks cool. i would give him the same markings as the 501st clones though.
Other than that, cool concept.

Acually the one locking device seems to be working fine at the moment and since I don't have a ton of money to spare I'm saving material anywhere I can. but I do see where you are coming from. I'll make 2 locking devices in the next mold. As for the 501st markings, this clone is based on the Clone Sharpshooter in Battlefront 2 so I just kept the markings they gave him in the game. A Parjai with the regular 501st markings might be cool though. Thanks for the comments ;D

Everyone I'm going to NC for a week. I'll be working on the female mandos while I'm up there and I'll still be able to post on JD and RS but I'm not going to be able to upload pics opn the laptop. So expect a little update when I get back.

Great job on casting the parts,  as for my ball joint project, it is going to have to wait until I get silicone or RTV rubber the laytex is hell to work with (takes way to long for a two part mold).

As for the Parjai helmet, make a blank cast, sand it smooth then remold it to get rid of the chunky sections,  I am doing this for my sculpt currently as I am not able to make mine as smooth or even as Glassman.  Anyways, great work and your fem-mando should look great.

This one was fun to make and (to me at least) fits right in with the other Hasbro jedi. Aayla Secura was the base (d'oh) and I used Shaak Ti's skirt and right arm. Repainted everything but the legs under the skirt. LMKWYT -

Great job on the nice repaint and switcharoo.  It really gives a fresh look with the different color skin and arms.

My only suggestion would be to maybe paint the straps that wrap around the twi-lek's lekku.  Other than that, top-notch custom.  8)

Well, as Straxus mentioned, the brown and green really do compliment and contrast each other, so I would say go with a brown like you've used, or maybe even is you have a gold or brassy color - similar to the color of the belt and straps, that mike look nice.   :)

Haha I haven't truly spent ages on them, its that I spent ages waiting for a chance to order the casting stuff and then waiting for the stuff to arrive so i could cast the torsos.

If anyone is really keeping track, forget everytihng I mentioned about low articulation, I'm making these babes SA. Number 1 is almost finished with the first coats of paints but no details yet. Same with Number 2. 3's recipe is in my head but not put together yet, and 4 is the same except I don't know what to use for some arms.

Hey guys. This is my completed Version 2 female mandalorian. She is the first in a squad of 4. The second in the squad is completed but doesn't have a head so I can't post pics yet. This custom took a lot of brainstorming and work. I believe I was the first to acually make a female mandalorian custom, and to tell the truth it was only like my 3rd ever custom so it was pretty bad. aeseven7 then made one, and Darth_Ennis after that. I remember seeing one on FFURG and another on Rebelscum. And now after improving my skills and seeing the other great female mandalorians of the customizers mentioned above, I decided to make a version 2. The WIP thread of this custom can be seen here (http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB7&Number=1843872&Forum=f7&Words=WIP%20female%20mand&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Main=1843872&Search=true&where=bodysub&Name=&daterange=1&newerval=&newertype=&olderval=&oldertype=&bodyprev=#Post1843872) as well as a pic of the first version I did. Okay enough of the boring background info, here's the pics :)

Update posted on all the sites in my threads: I've got the second one in her squad almost 95% done. She needs a good female head that will fit under a jango helmet. And I've got to drill a small hole in the back so that she can wear the jetpack I made for her. Any help on the head is very very much appreciated. Remember, the faster yall come up with some heads, the faster I can get one and glue it on to finish #2 up.

Thanks. To clarify, "version 1" was my first version of the yellow female. "v2" is the second and mostly final version of her. V2 also happens to be number 1 in the squad of 4 female mandos im making. "number2" is the second female in that squad. It's a fanfic paint job and its done. I just need to get some good pics. 3 is on hold at the moment because I've got some other things I need to do. Other things in life and other things in customizing to do before I hit the 3rd one in the female mando squad.

I've got two male mando repaints almost done and a jedi almost done too. As well as a clone thats kinda half way done. I want to get all those done before #3 in the squad.

Thanks Ennis. And no problem about the name drop, your female mando was really cool. I acually used Aayla's legs and G.I.Joe boots for the second one, kind of like a nod to yours. That was a great idea.

As for this being molded - Yea, This is the one I made the 2 part mold out of.

Pics of Number 2 coming soon. I mean I have pics but one of two things happens, they either show all the detailing (wash and drybrush and other stuff) but the color is messed up, OR they show the right colors but you cant see the details. I've got to find a happy medium and when I do I'll post pics. Stay tuned ;)

Few of my recent customs after getting back into customizing. I had alot of fun making these. I've got a group shot then individual shots with some extra info about each custom and then 2 shots of some of my WIPs. Um, I'm sorry about the pictures... I don't have a studio or an expensive camera not to mention a very low skill level of picture taking, but they'll work I think. EDIT: They are really small too, for some reason.

Onto the customs:

Group shot of all the customs together hanging on our pool deck.

Commander Bacara SA version. I just took Bacara's parts off him, threw them on an SA troop and then used a dremel and some new really cool glue to swap the necks out. I made a point of not using a figure stand in the pic - good to have Bacara standing up now instead of falling on his face all the time. Oh yea and I didn't do any extra paint on this figure because I wanted it to be very very Hasbro-ish, just new articulation.

Same as above, I wanted this to be mostly Hasbro-ish so not really any paint on this figure except a few extra black marks on his armor. I had an extra cody head and neck and a neck-less 501st, so why not put them together with my new glue stuff? Helmet is too big for him so I added some sculpey inside to make it tighter.

Extra Padme head, extra Slave Leia body, saw a pic someone did putting Padme's head on Leia's body and it looked great so I figure-ized it. No extra paint or anything just because I'm lazy, but we'll say it's because I wanted it to look Hasbro-ish ;) BTW can't even find the slave Padme pic anymore, oh well.

Bought this half completed custom from MurderWeapon a few months ago and just painted some things on him and dullcoated him. All MW's ideas and stuff, just with a little extra paint from me. Dunno WTF I was thinking about the battle-damage on him though, it looks terrible. :P

Ready for the "real" customs?
SA clone body I'd screwed up on so many times I just decided to paint the whole thing light gray. Then I figured I'd make him a commander for the 41st elites ion their gray armor. I think it turned out really nice IMO.

Got this Anakin in a trade a few months ago and threw him in the bin of mandalorian fodder for some reason. Must have been sleepy. So a few days ago I open the bin and think, what the heck? But, I thought a kid mando might be pretty cool. No armor besides the helmet and jetpack but he does have a gun, knife, and droid. I guess he's practicing flying and shooting or using his rangefinder. Who knows?

Mando 1- Almost finished mando that I can't seem to finish off. Based on a pic from some random site I saw.
Mando 2- About half way finished Jango from Open Seasons. Dang, reminds me I need to buy that comic sometime.
Mando 3- Kal Skirata, he was finished at one point and dullcoated sitting on my shelf reserved for my Mando army. Then I got the bright idea to boil him and cast the legs. When I boiled him to put the legs back in, the dullcoat turned white and screwed him up. I guess I'll get around to repainting him one day.
Wtf Jedi- Um... I dunno. Hardly painted mix of parts.
Also have a half finished SA jedi and leg-less Commander Cody on the table and some new molds for casting in the making. Plus many ideas and parts of ideas up in my head for future customs.

Well, thanks for looking. All comments appreciated.

Nice to see you back in the game, Korbra.

Seems like you cleaned out the parts bin with some of these, eh? Doesn't hurt every once in a while, especially when these nice customs are the end result. Good thinking about masqueing your "laziness" by keeping the figs Hasbro-like  :P.  However, the paints apps you did do on some of those clones look very crisp. Good lines on those markings.

Just searched for a hot Padmé, sexy Padmé, slave Padmé, but nothing turned up. Well, some nice pics popped up, but not Padmé in a metal bikini  ::)

The Mando kid looks cool. I like the non descript paint scheme you used.

Your WIPs look promising, hope to see those Mandos finished soon. What am I saying? Just take your time, man.

I love the clones, very nice use of parts.
The thing about the Cody head that bothers me it that stupid high neck he has.
Makes his head look shrunken and elevated.
Yours turned out nice, I like that 501st trooper.
Bacara is awesome, I always wanted to make an SA Bacara but I havent been able to find a clone up here. Its been over a year.
The Mando kid is cool, he looks like he is gonna go out and shoot some Jedi.

Wow, I am seriously thankful for all your replies. I had forgotten how good it felt to make some fun customs and post the pictures and then read comments from you guys. I'm glad you like all the customs I made.

IncomT65 - Lol at you searching for the Padme pic. :P Thanks for the compliments, and yea I actually did clear out some of the parts bin with this bunch. Some of them had been WIP for a few months while I was taking a break so it felt good to finish them up.

Deanna Rash - Thanks ;D

Darth_Ennis - Hey buddy, glad to see you are still customizing. Thanks for commenting over at RS and here. About the racing stripe mando, Danakin Skywalker informed me that the color scheme was almost identical to one of his friend's mando costumes. Apparently the character is really a girl so I was thinking about finishing up the WIP and then making a female mando to go along. They'd be a mando couple with a similar paint scheme. Might be cool.

Clone Commander - I agree about the neck and head of Commander Cody. I just had an extra one and a headless clone so I figured I'd use it on him. He does look like some long necked peahead guy though, so he stands in formation on my shelf with his helmet ON lol. Also thanks for the compliments.

Edit: Searched through my star wars pics folder and found the pic. Guess I'd saved it since I was planning on making a custom of it:

Finished up this mandalorian WIP. Many more WIPs should be finished up this weekend. Pics kind of washed out the drybrushed details and stuff but oh well.

This is based on a pic I saw on some art site, but Danakin Skywalker showed me a pic of his female friend dressed up in a costume with practically the same paint scheme, so I dunno. I plan on making a female mandalorian with the exact scheme from Danakin's pic to go along with this mando so then I'll have both of them :)

Lol thanks Incom ;D

A little update:

You know, I should try and get a pic of the entire mando army sometime soon. It grows about a mandalorian a week but the last pic of the army was way back when I finished the mando dropship.

The SA Bacara just got a painted head cast and a dremeled out Bacara helm added onto him. He also got some Hasbro like battle damage and dullcoated again.

Currently working on molding a few peices and painting a few different mandalorians.

In the future: Look for the finished Danakin pic female, a finished black armor/suit female modeled after a convention costume I saw, a dark skinned mandalorian, an older mandalorian who's had his fair share of battles, the first alien mando to join my group (rodian or something else depending on my fodder bin at the time) and finally 2 extra parts clone ARCs with lots of FIXIT sculpting on them.

I'm trying really hard to get my WIP bin cleared out completely so that I can start new projects, but I want to take my time on all of the WIPs so that they look good. Wish me luck

Here is my mandalorian army going through time. What got me to start customizing mandalorians the most? I've always loved Boba and Jango and reading things about the mandalorians. I saw RS user Darth_Soundwave's custom mando army (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a248/ActionfigureFernandez/Star%20Wars/Mandalorians.jpg) and decided to start my own. So, do yall like it so far?

Post by: CommanderKorbra on January 22, 2007, 03:54 PM
This is my newest custom. Before I say anything else, I'm apologizing about the pictures. I'm possible the worst on the boards when it comes to finding a good place to take pics where it actually has good light. Anyways I really liked making this custom. It is based on the picture shown. I tried to stay as accurate as possible, make it as articulated as possible, and have fun doing it. I used almost all my skill with this custom, casting, dremeling, painting, boiling and popping, and so on. I even had a couple of big mess-ups or a half finished figure I wasn’t happy with so I scrapped that part and started over. Anyways, enjoy and please, please comment, I really love comments and constructive criticism on my customs. Also, to the lady in the costume - great costume and thanks for all the inspiration!

Hey Korbra, you posted this at Yakface, but I can't reply there, as my account hasn't been activated.  So I'll reply here!

I'm thinking it's gotta have something to do with tools I use. Come to think of it, I really only use a toothpick and my exacto, lol. Anyone have sugestions for a small inexpensive toolkit to start sculpting a little more seriously?

I use a combination of traditional sculpting tools, dental tools, and my exacto knife to sculpt with, and I bought dental tools  like these on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/12-Dental-Picks-for-Arts-Crafts-Hobby-Tools_W0QQitemZ200070214699QQihZ010QQcategoryZ28124QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item200070214699), for fairly cheap.

JMB once sent me a pic of the tools he uses, and though I use a lot of the same tools, my results are no where near:

A lot of those implements can be bought for cheap at a craft store.  The calipers I haven't seen anywhere but ebay, but you could get most of these for under 30 dollars.
Title: Alpha ARC 91
Post by: CommanderKorbra on January 28, 2007, 01:50 PM
This is my latest custom. It's the first one I've used my new FIXIT Sclupt on. This used to a be a Commander Cody figure that got it's head and belt copped off. So I decided to make Alpha ARC-91. I think it looks pretty cool if I say so myself.  I also tried a new weathering technique posted by Jeditaz earlier this month. Oh and a few final things, this ARC is based on all the different ARC's seen - Hasbro's figure, the Alpha ARC in the coming soon comic 2 pack, the ARCs in the Republic Comics, and so on. He's got some Jaig Eyes (a mandalorian honor) because he displayed outstanding courage at the Battle of Hypori. Hope you like it, here's some pics.

Ok, I really have to get some of that Fixit sculpt. I've seen nothing but great work with that, and this ARC is just such an example! Great boot straps and pouches on his armor. And what's that extra on his pauldron? Some sort of target tracking device?

The bright blue looks great on him. Nice detail on those Jaig eyes and on the '91' on his pauldron and helmet! I only have mixed feelings about the blue on the pauldron. A bit too much, imho  :)

Post by: CommanderKorbra on January 28, 2007, 05:32 PM
Nice constructive crit mixed in with compliments, Incom. That means a lot to me. I put all the blue on the pauldren because of the way it looks in the Republic Comics on the ARCs. They are a bit bulkier looking than normal pauldrens and seem to have more blue than black. However now that you said sometihng, It might look better with less blue. :P

Thank you master brisk arpor. I was totally not expecting this amount of compliments on all the sites. I mean, first time using FIXIT and trying out that weathering technique and some new paints. Pretty cool. I'm currently FIXITing an Episode 2 Commemorative Tin AOTC Trooper into another ARC. Ruprecht's recent tutorials and a little practice will have this one turning out at least as good if not better than the Alpha 91. Hope I can satisfy you all again with the new one!

Stay tuned...

CK, i really like the female mandalore in black. From the recipe it looks  like you put alot of work into her and she turned out really well.

$5-8 will get you a decent beginners set of sculpting tools at Micheales arts and krafts. (just following up Ruprechet's sound advice)

Post by: CommanderKorbra on February 5, 2007, 03:55 PM
Thank you very much Glassman and Anton. It puts a smile on my face knowing that people enjoy my work. Here's my latest custom, finished a few days ago:

This Rodian jedi fought alongside many other jedi in the Battle of Geonosis. He 'killed' many opposing battledroids. Sadly, he didn't last until clone troopers arrived to pick up the survivors of the battle.

He was going to be an SA Mace Windu from Geonosis until I discovered the 30AC first wave would have an SA Mace in it. So I used a VOTC Greedo's head and hands and made a rodian SA Jedi with soft goods skirt. LMKWYT please. Thanks

Post by: CommanderKorbra on February 14, 2007, 05:08 PM
Heya! This is my most recent custom. I took a Scorch figure I had and sculpted some stuff on him. Then I painted him white, and finally did a series of washes, drybrushes, and sandpapering. This is the Communications Specialist in my squad I'm working on. 2 more commandos are being painted white right now, and the 4th member of the squad is still MIA at some retail store ;) Look for finished other members of this squad later. When they are all completed I'll give the squad and members names and possible backgrounds. Oh and sorry about how the pictures turned out, not all of the weathering detail is visible. LMKWYT

Post by: jedipurge on February 15, 2007, 07:53 PM
I like it a lot, especially the visor.  What kind/brand of paint did you use for the white?  I always have a problem when I paint white over a dark color, and I get frustrated and it ususally winds up back in the fodder bin  :(  I would suggest attaching something like the Obi pilot headset to the helmet, not all of it just the antenae part.
Title: Re: CommanderKorbra' Customs - Feb 15 - RC:Communications Specialist new pic
Post by: CommanderKorbra on February 16, 2007, 03:42 PM
Thank you for the suggestion. I think I might try to add some more antennas on him. For all my paint I use Apple Barrel or Folk Art from Walmart's crafts section. I've got a Titanium White that I mostly use and then also a Misty White that I mix with the other one sometimes, for no reason at all. On white over dark I usually do like 3 or 4 coats, but sand down after each coat to make sure there isn't too many unwanted bumps or build ups of white paint. Just enough to be all white.

Post by: CommanderKorbra on February 22, 2007, 03:36 PM
Hey guys,

Don't freak out about this not being starwars related. I'm working on a project for one of my classes for Romeo and Juliet. I'm doing 2 things for this project - A little sculpey scene and hopefully 2 regular sized figures FIXITed and painted up to be Romeo and Juliet.

So onto the question, what figures do you think I should use as the bases? Articulation isn't really a big deal. In fact, I'll probably FIXIT or Sculpey over the joints before I paint the figures anyways. I just need a generic figure that might work as a base for Romeo and one for Juliet. If you have any ideas, please post them. Ideas for in scale swords or other props would also be great.

Oh, and if you have any full body shots of some of the actors in in costume from the 1968 film, or costumes by themselves from that movie, or even just a full body shot of something Romeo and Juliet might have worn in the play, it'd be a big help.

Thanks everyone.

EDIT: Got help on yakface with the stuff above.
Update on my customs, in order of me wanting to complete them first to last:
1. Romeo and Juliet (might opt to just go with the sculpey scene and no 3 3/4inch figure.
2. UGP Bith figures
3. Finishing up repaints of about 20 felucia troops and Bly and Deviss and so on.
4. The last Commando in my squad of 4. I'll get pics of the other 3 up soon.
5. Finish up sculpting my second ARC. I've got a lot of work to do, using FIXIT. This one will be much better than my first, and it uses a Ep 2 comm. tin trooper as the base. Then I'll have to paint it and dullcoat and get pics.
6. Paint up 2 casts of the Parjai helm to use on my older customs where I used a sculpted Parjai Helm.
7. Might use some acetone to get off the crappy weathering on Delta Squad and try my hand at weathering them.

New Picture at bottom of this post

Just a few words and pictures of work on my custom 4 man squad of republic commandos. When all 4 are completed, I'll give them weapons and names and a squad name and stuff. For now, just check out the figures and forget anything about a back story ;)

Not only have I updated everyone's visors to have the same color glow, I've updated the squad's communications man to have an antenna and I redid his pack to match the rest of the squad's packs. Here are two pictures of what I'm talking about.

I'm just trying this new way of taking and uploading the pictures, and this way seems to be the best for seeing the details of my customs, at the expense of being a bit too big. Tried to post, but my pictures didn't work. I might have to reload them and try posting again later. Sorry
EDIT:

Commanders
Well, here they are. Finally. I didn't get much response when I showed these to people I knew off the internet. Probably because they can't see what other collectors and customizers can see in terms of little details and what kind of work you have to do to get a certain look. For this squad, I chose a black grimy wash with a little bit of gray and white drybrushing on the colored parts of the armor and pauldrens. Every one of the members of this squad was weathered using the same techniques, but at different times, so none of the battle damage should match up. I'm very happy with these, they look so great standing on my shelf by Aayla. First, we have Commander Bly with a brown stripe and completely repainted helmet. Next is Commander Devis with a slightly changed red colored armor and an extra stripe on his feet like seen in the picture of him.

Evo Grunts
Next are the 5 Evo grunts, all with a reddish orangeish brown colored pauldren like in the movie. I removed some stipes and made other stripes bigger on these evo grunts to match the other grunts better. In the pictures, their heads are turned around so that the chin isn't poking out.

Special Grunts
Next are the three regular grunts with yellow thigh armor. In real life, these are the bodies from the extra Commander Bly figures, and a SA#41 helm painted up. For purposes of my little explanation, lets just say they are a slightly specialized group of grunts under Bly's command. These guys all have yellow pauldrens. One of them is the squad's sniper.

Here is my latest mandalorian. I'd done plenty of human male mandalorians... a few human female mandalorians... even a human kid mando. But this is my first alien species mando. A little sculpting went into this custom, and an entire repaint. Hope you like. Oh and by the way, that isn't a regular sword. It is made of mandalorian iron which is why it stopped the jedi's lightsaber blade.

Title: Re: CommanderKorbra's Customs - July 2 - WOOKIEE MANDALORIAN!
Post by: CommanderKorbra on July 2, 2007, 09:00 PM
This is a mandalorian who is a wookiee. He was adopted into a clan of mandalorians after a small fight between the mandos and some wookiees. He was very very young at the time and grew up learning much about the mandalorian culture, not basic wookiee culture. He has a ton of experience in many different situations. If you are going into a war, you want him to be right behind you.

A lot of time and effort went into this custom. It gave me something fun and not too strenuous to do while recovering from getting my wisdom teeth yanked out. I really enjoyed working on this custom so I hope it shows through, even with the crappy pictures. I chose the colors I did for a couple reasons - I liked the color contrast. I didn't have a mandalorian with these colors. And finally, they were the colors of my high school. Let me know if you have any questions and please post any comments you guys have. Good or bad, helpful or not ;)

Since there are many pictures this time, just click the one below to go to the webshots folder I made and look at the rest. Thanks

Nothing new, been taking a lot of time off since the summer. Lots of things going on. Just don't want this topic to die. I'm sure I'll be back some time! Afterall, all the customizing parts and paints and equipment isn't just going to use itself up.
