Title: Roton's Customs - Updated 6/12/06 - 414th Legion Troopers
Post by: Roton7 on May 20, 2006, 06:01 PM
I made a custom yesterday/today, and the only reason I'm not showing you pics right now is becasue I'm making a custom gun for him, and the custom gun isn't finished yet.

I'll be posting my customs here from now on. I expect to make more since summer is coming and I'l have a lot of free time on my hands.

P.S. I'm also gonna make a PN, so stay tuned. 8)

Now I'm not sure I care. The figure can't possibly measure up to the pre-pic posting hype.  :P

Finally pics are here!

I hope the delays haven't made you too irritated, and if so, maybe these pics will cheer you up! :P

Commander Krattak Bio:
Commander Krattak leads the 414th Legion. He has gone on missions to planets such as Rhen Var, Kiroscaunt, and Dantooine, with his loyal troops following right behind. He also carries a VX-12 rifle.

Here's 2 regular pics:

nice custom. the stripping on the legs came out really well and you have done some pretty nice weathering.  i like the marking design, but the chest marking dosn't look like it goes with the rest, i don't know what it is, it just dosn't mesh well, just an observation.

great job! do youhave any troops for him to command? i'd love to see a squad....

great job thanks for sharing.

Nice looking clone Roton.  I like the contrast of the black and the white.  The weathering and the battle damage looks good. I really like how you have the scratches of white through the black paint.

jedistyle: Thanks, and once I can find an H&V white clone, I will be making more of his troops. I have none at the moment.

Phalanxx: Thanks to you also, I personally like the black and white contrast too.

And like I just said, I'll be making more troops from the 414th Legion later.

I like the design, very unique, yet still fits in with the movie designs.

I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, but his lower leg stripes do not look like they are symmetrical.  (His right leg looks a bit too horizontal, while his left leg is a bit more "V" like).  That's a minor nitpick though.  Overall the figure looks great and the paint apps/weathering are very well done.

Can't wait to see the squad!

I know what you mean about the asymmetry of the leg designs. They aren't perfectly the same, and I'm okay with that. I'll just make up some reason for them to be like that...

hm...

Got it!!

The battle damage sorta scraped paint off both sides in battle, making them asymmetrical!

Sounds good to me!  It wasn't that big of a deal and actually looks kinda cool.  It's different enough so that it looks intentional.   ;)

P.S. I took the pics for the PN (chapter 1). I won't be putting up chapter 2 until I get another custom done. Well anyways, I hope to have the PN up soon.

It's just about the 414th Legion (main character is Commander Krattak).

Does that help?

They are meant for things like special ops or secretive missions rather than ordinary battles.

Does that help?

SmartyPants has given me some good ideas for the title via PM, and the name of the PN will be Special Ops: A Soldier's Tale

So stay tuned, hopefully it will be up by today or monday!

Krattak is cool, I like the simplicity of the black and white and how well it came out. Looking forward to seeing some more squad members and your photonovel.

Well, here's 2 customs that I made yesterday: A 414th Legion Trooper, and a 414th Legion Spec. Ops Trooper. Lately I've been amazed at D_N's fabulous soft goods work, that I decided to try and make some clones w/ soft goods myself. I myself think the fabric makes the clone look much better.

414th Legion Trooper: This character will not be in the PN for a while.

414th Legion Spec. Ops Trooper: This character will be in part 3 of the PN, and will continue to play a big part in the following segments. And no, this is not a Target Exclusive clone just with some cloth added--this was a plain white SA clone that I made completely black. So yes, there was lots of work needed :)

Your clones are very nice! I love the designs, and the crisp, sharp black paint apps. ;D

Than being said, I gotta say that the soft goods don't work well with your clones here. It works for D_N 'cause he's got a rough & dirty style to begin with.

YOUR stuff looks good because of the nice lines and slick-lookin' armor. The frayed cloth here just detracts, and brings discord to your piece, uhm, er, imho. :-\

I'd almost suggest that you keep up the work on your own style, and expand on it in ways that accentuate & add to the crisp-ness of it, but it IS good to try out new things, to see where experimentation takes you & your style. So keep up the good work, Roton7 !

I'm with PenDragon on this one.  I think the sharp lines on Krattak's forces look much better w/o the soft goods.  However, on the black trooper, I think the soft good do work.  You may want to darken it up to keep with the theme.

Good luck with the painted black trooper and paint chipping.  I'm not sure if you've sealed them yet or done anything to protect the joints.  I know there have been some threads here talking about joint chipping - its worth looking for those to protect that slick looking trooper!!

Honestly, I agree with you guys. I really didn't think the first clone looked that good with soft goods. But, as Brent said, I DID think that it worked good with the black trooper. So, I guess I'll be removing the white clone's soft goods today. I'll post pics later!

Well, Roton, a big thanks goes out to you for the props.

I've got a couple suggestions. The cloth would look really good and alot more natural on the body if:

Pick a fabric that's already the color that you want it to be- painting cloth doesn't especially work too well on accountof the fact that the edges will never fully absorb the color and it takes forever to dry.

On your SpecOps Troop: the black suspenders are a cool idea, but maybe start with a black fabric, cut down the width of the cloth, and glue it under the belt to make a seamless look.

Your 414th grunt looks good too, and the same thing I've posted above goes for the same thing- the brown looks good, but maybe start with a brown fabric itself.

The figures look really good, I like the assymetrical look on the troops. These are just a few suggestions to make the cloth on figs look better.

They look nice, I like seeing some that aren't very weathered like this.  Great use of the cloth goods too, like a DN custom.

Thanks to D_N and Chewie for the comments!

Well, yesterday I completely removed the soft goods off of the 414th Legion Trooper, and I darkened up the soft goods on the Spec. Ops trooper so that the soft goods basically match the color of the figure itself. I'll try to get pics up tonight if possible. :)
