Best news I've heard all day.

I can't stand that big-chinned freak.

I'd heard a few weeks ago that Conan was considering switching networks to get an earlier time-slot sooner.

I wonder if there was some sort of pressure and/or compromise to get Leno to retire a little sooner than he'd planned.

That is great news!  My wife and I are big fans of Conan, and I'm really happy to hear he's getting the gig next.  I laugh outloud every single time I watch his show I think.  Its too bad it is a ways off though.  We've never really watched Leno, although I guess I don't really have anything against him.  Just not all that interested in watching him really.  He does seem like a nice enough guy though.  Still enjoy a little Letterman now and then, but Conan's the best I think.  Anyways, great news, thanks for posting.

I've been watching Conan since the 7th grade.

5 more years is nothing.

I don't mind Leno but then again I usually don't watch these late night shows often.  Ok, rarely if ever.  All I know is I don't care much for Letterman.  Conan is ok I suppose.   Plenty of Irish redhead jokes to siphon from.

While I like this announcement, Leno is a tad bit underrated. His opening Monologue and second segment are always funny. Then he just turns into "Meh" after that.

If they could combine Leno's first two segments with Conan's show...

And what will happen with Eubanks and the band?

Anyone watch Conan tonight?  Lucas is going to be on in like 5 minutes...but he was just at ILM and did some pretty funny stuff on blue screen.

Pretty funny stuff and the video at SW.com is good too, check out JD.com's front page if you want a link to that...

I liked his Q&A too.

The whole Conan replacing Leno is good news if it comes to fruition but I hear it's not gonna happen that way and Leno won't walk away from a cash cow like that and his ratings will almost guarantee an offer for him to stay.  If Conan remained the same though, I'd much rather see him at 11:30 than his current slot...  I have this odd feeling his show would change if he did get the Tonight show though for some reason.  Leno's just horrid to listen to and uses lifted material pretty much throughout his show.

To be honest I usually don't watch any late night TV anymore and listen to my Sirius radio to catch up on what I missed in the day, so I'm talking out my butt.  I would be more inclined to watch Conan though than Leno...  I catch the Daily Show next day so it's not in the running.

Gotta claim I enjoy Leno.  The first two segments are all I really watch anyway.  Sometimes I'm so tired I don't even get through the monologue...comes from keeping up with  kids all day.

As for Conan, I don't watch him very often (see above) so I'm not too sure on him.  But, I have been able to watch in the past and I love the Walker clips that he puts on.

I laughed a bit too.  I like Conan a lot, and I think he's only going to do well at all if he maintains his norm and keeps his regular audience interested.  The old folks who followed Leno will not like Conan, but I also believe there's no way to win them over either.

They'll simply go onto Letterman IMO.

Letterman I like as well.  I loathed Leno.

We watched it last night, and laughed a couple times as well.  I've always enjoyed Conan and his show, so I hope he does well at the Tonight Show.  Like it was mentioned, I don't know how well he'll go over with the older crowd, but I think some of that is expected (plus, they can get Jay again at 9 in the Fall).  I know my parents (and their age group) seemed to always watch Leno, while we were more with Conan/Letterman.  I have nothing against Leno necessarily, he seems like a nice enough guy, just not as funny/entertaining to me.

I loved Leno and hated to see him go.  I've watched very little Conan, so I'm not going to pass judgement on the show just yet.  I did enjoy the opening last night with him running across the US.

I'll watch some more Conan before I decide if I'm going to stick with it, or use that first half hour of the show to catch up on my DVR'd stuff.

I'm glad that Conan has not changed the format of his show to satisfy the older people who watched Leno to gain more ratings.  His show is fine the way it is and is very funny.  If the old people don't like it they can watch "Old School" Leno when he comes back in the fall with his new show.  The Fonzie finishing at the Urinal and the Creepy Tom Cruise Wax figures were hilarious this week.

I was reading this yesterday and thought it a bit interesting, but not necessarily suprising.   I'm a huge Leno fan, and although Conan can be funny, he's just not Leno IMO.  I've watched a lot of Leno's 9PM CST show and enjoyed it. I usually end up DVRing it and flipping through to watch the monologue, whatever "skit" might be going, headlines, and stuff like that.  Rarely do I watch the interviews...I could care less most of the time.

What I don't want to see is Leno being a half hour show after the news at night.  I'm not sure what to do with Conan, but from what I've read, the late night NBC ratings tanked when the switch was made.

Oh well, just my thoughts on it.

Conan has been nothing but loyal to NBC and they turn around and **** him over.  He should tell them to screw off and jump ship to a competing network.

I've stated my opinion in this link as to why I think Conans funny and Leno isn't. But no matter what side your on I think you have to admit that if they really only give Conan a year that is BS. I know a part of it is Leno's bad ratings in his new show but still.........

By most people's accounts there's no clue how Conan would've performed had Leno just disappeared...  A lot blame his lead-in since lead-ins can impact even the morning news ratings.

Total BS...  Conan's getting completely hosed for Leno's lame-ass "safe" comedy style.  Blech.

Conan O’Brien Says He Won’t Host ‘Tonight Show’ Following Leno
By BILL CARTER

Conan O’Brien says he will not host “The Tonight Show” if it is moved to 12:05 a.m.

In a statement Tuesday afternoon, Mr. O’Brien said he cannot participate “in what I honestly believe is its destruction.”

Mr. O’Brien’s comments come two days after NBC formally outlined a plan to move “The Jay Leno Show” to 11:35 p.m. in March, elbowing Mr. O’Brien’s “Tonight Show” back half an hour. Mr. Leno seems supportive of the plan; but in his statement, Mr. O’Brien rejects it outright. The statement reads:

    People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

    Yours,

    Conan

After 16 years making a name with his distinctive brand of intellectually silly comedy on NBC’s “Late Night” show, Mr. O’Brien replaced Mr. Leno as the host of “The Tonight Show” a mere seven months ago. He is just the fifth man to lead ”Tonight,” after Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson and Mr. Leno.

Mr. Leno, meanwhile, moved to prime time in September as the host of “The Jay Leno Show.” But the 10 p.m. experiment was a bust for many NBC affiliates, which have seen the ratings for their late local newscasts plummet.

Amid mounting pressure to scrap the talk show, NBC announced on Sunday that Mr. Leno’s last show at 10 p.m. would be Feb. 11. NBC will begin showing the Winter Olympics the next day, setting the stage for a new schedule on March 1. But the network acknowledged that day that Mr. O’Brien was not yet on board with the move.

Fox has expressed interest in starting a late-night show starring Mr. O’Brien — provided he found a way to extricate himself from his NBC contract. The contractual complications were outlined in this story in Tuesday’s New York Times.

Conan's letter about WHY he's leaving is 10x funnier than anything Jay Leno said through his entire ****storm of 10pm shows ripping off any/every comic venue he could think of, and doing it poorly to boot.

Conan's Tonight Show wasn't as good as his Late Night was...  He was edgier on that, and I think bumping to the pre-midnight timeslot hurt him because they were looking for someone old people would migrate with and he ain't that.  But whatever...  Leno's a tool.

I hope Letterman dominates Leno now.  I know my parents have switched, and I think it's a permanent thing for them...  I hope they're the average then, and that Leno's basically inheriting second fiddle to Letterman.  Letterman's an edgier guy.  Leno takes the easy road.  I know what I prefer, but I'm not the typical audience at that hour either I don't think.

Since I don't watch any of these shows (I'm in bed by 10), does that mean that the Tonight Show is officially dead after the million years its been on?
Title: Re: Conan to Replace Leno in 2009!!!!
Post by: BillCable on January 13, 2010, 11:20 AM
Nothing's been decided, yet.  NBC could decide to give The Tonight Show back to Leno and pay Conan the $60 million penalty for breaking his contract.  I assume if NBC attempts to force Conan to host The Tonight Show at midnight that Conan will just not show up for work and he'll be in breach of contract.  I don't know how that would play out, though... how long the contract stipulates Conan can miss work before he's fired.  I know NBC can move The Tonight Show to midnight under Conan's contract.  It's very tricky.  If they call what Jay hosts at 11:30 "The Tonight Show" or attempt to expand the Leno show to an hour they owe Conan $60 million.  But I don't know what happens if Conan refuses to move to midnight... if that's effectively a resignation or if Conan has some leverage.

I actually like Leno.  The only problem I have with his show is that it's basically the same stuff over and over.  The Headlines and Jaywalking has been done to death now. If I tune it's kind of funny but we have seen now for two decades.  I am kind of surprised they are screwing over Conan like they are.  He'll end up doing fine elsewhere.  I would almost like to see him go to a cable channel since there would not be as much restrictions on what he could do.

One thing I think we can both agree on, though, is that the way he edited that title was just about perfect.  Some people probably would have just erased the old title, replaced it altogether with the new, updated title, and called it a day, but not Rob.  He knew that having both phrases in the title was the key to making the whole thing work.  He just has this knack for knowing what sounds good and what doesn't, I guess.  You guys are lucky to have him on board.

The Masturbating Bear is dead.

As a deal nears for Conan O'Brien's exit from NBC, one thing is certain: The characters and recurring comedy bits O'Brien originated during his 16-plus years on "Late Night" and "The Tonight Show" will not follow the host when he leaves NBC.

The Peacock owns the intellectual property behind such popular O'Brien characters as Pimpbot 5000 and Conando, as well as recurring segments such as In the Year 3000 and Desk Driving. Sources involved in the settlement negotiations say NBC is keeping the copyrighted and trademarked elements of O'Brien's shows as part of the deal. That means the bits and characters will likely never be seen after O'Brien's "Tonight" ends its run Jan. 22.

While the vast majority of the characters O'Brien introduced are said to owned by NBC, it's unclear who controls Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the crass canine puppet that is perhaps O'Brien's most popular recurring bit. Triumph was originated by writer and longtime O'Brien pal Robert Smigel, whose reps declined to comment on whether Smigel or NBC owned rights (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3id3e0b71b5f1a6df4b2df779fa18f5e5e)

Transcript: Conan O'Brien's January 19 monologue (http://marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2010/01/19/transcript-conan-obriens-january-19-monologue/?hpt=T2)

Quote
Below is a transcript of "The Tonight Show" opening monologue from January 19th:

Hi, I’m Conan O’Brien, and I’m just three days away from the biggest drinking binge in history.

Yesterday there were rallies for me in cities across the country, including Chicago. You can tell things are bad when even Cubs fans feel sorry for you.

It’s been a busy day for me today. I spent the afternoon at Universal Studios’ amusement park, enjoying their brand-new ride, the “Tunnel of Litigation.”

Some papers are reporting that I’m legally prohibited from saying anything bad about NBC. For example – I am NOT allowed to say things like: “NBC is headed downhill faster than a fat guy chasing a runaway cheese-wheel.”

Some papers are reporting that I’m legally prohibited from saying anything bad about NBC. But nobody said anything about speaking in Spanish. “NBC esta manejado por hijos de cabras imbeciles que comen dinero y evacuan problemas.” (NBC is run by brainless sons of goats who eat money and crap trouble.”)

Some other stories in the press are saying that in the future I may not be able to retain what is known as my show’s “intellectual property.” Isn’t it great to live in a country where a cigar-smoking dog puppet and a bear that masturbates are considered “intellectual property?"

I have to say, all of our problems with NBC really did sneak up on us quite suddenly. But I should have seen this coming. During the few months we’ve been doing this show, there were definitely things that should have tipped me off. I’ll give you an example, check this out. (cut to: applause sign) There’s our applause sign…(applause sign blinks) but look at the sign below it…(camera pans up to reveal sign that reads, “humor him for 7 months”)

Of course, there are other entertainment stories in the news. Some people who have gone to see “Avatar” say it’s caused them to have headaches, dizziness, nausea and blurry eyesight. Meanwhile James Cameron says it’s caused him to have a billion dollars.

Interesting local story. A new $65 tour called the “LA Gang Tour” is being offered in Los Angeles that takes tourists through L.A.’s most dangerous neighborhoods. The gang tour is also known by its other name, “A cab ride from the airport.”

Earlier this week, the founder of Taco Bell passed away at the age of 86. His tombstone will read: “Father. Husband. Inventor of Diarrhea.”

I’ve been thinking a lot about what I’m going to do with all my new free time. Here are my plans so far for next week. Check it out:

-Introduce myself to my children.

-Connect all my freckles with a Sharpie.

-Play Beatles Rock Band until I reach “Level Yoko.”

-Make a cameo appearance on “Gossip Girl” as Blaine Wilcox, a mysterious albino playboy.

-Legally change my name to “No-Show Jones.”

-Finally make good on my plan to backpack through India with "The Situation."

-Return La Bamba to the kindly old carpenter who made him.

-Have my “TONIGHT SHOW FOREVER” tattoo changed to “OH, SHOW OVER?”

-Make a big move to Fox. Megan Fox.

Yes, he did start doing top ten lists on his NBC show, but I believe they argued that "top ten lists" were generic enough that he sort of sidestepped NBC legal with a simple name change.  The "Top Ten List" became the "Late Show Top Ten" or something like that.

NBC confirms O'Brien exit (http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/TV/01/21/conan.nbc.deal/index.html?hpt=T2)

Conan O'Brien inks severance deal with NBC (http://money.cnn.com/2010/01/21/news/Conan_OBrien_NBC_severance_deal/index.htm?hpt=T2)

Quote
Conan O'Brien and NBC reached a deal Thursday to terminate the comedian's contract just seven months after was named host of "The Tonight Show."

The network also announced that Jay Leno will return as host of "The Tonight Show" on March 1.

The statement did not provide details on the agreement. But people familiar with the negotiations said O'Brien stands to receive a severance payment of about $32 million plus about $12 million for his staff.

The deal is said to contain a clause that would prohibit both O'Brien and NBC from making disparaging comments about each other in public. It will also strip O'Brien of intellectual property rights to characters he created during his tenure at NBC, such as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, according to people familiar with the terms

Tom Hanks is one tonight. That should be okay.

But it's Will Farrell I'm looking more forward too. I won't be surprised if he drops trowel in front of Conan. Hell he's practically done it already in that ridiculously small Leprechaun outfit from a few years ago when Conan did Late Night.

I won't be returning to watch Leno. I am not 100% convince of Leno's sincerity in all of this. And I don't think he's as entertaining as Conan is.

I thought it was a perfect ending.  Ferrell started and ended the run, Young was ******* fantastic on Long May You Run and Free Bird was a very fitting thing to end it on.  It was probably very liberating to get out of the last two weeks of hell hole.  About the only thing I thought was lame was the pregnant hippie in there.  But I choked up along with CoCo on his speech right before the end and during the montage during the monologue

I hope Letterman continues to kick Lenos ass and NBC realizes they hitched to the totally wrong horse.  I get the whole ratings fiasco, I get that Leno drew more and was beating Dave.  But for totally selfish reasons, I loved the 7 months we got and I hope that people who did watch Conan speak with their remotes and don't tune in to Leno.   I don't feel bad for him though, like DB says, he got his money and he is going to get paid again in the fall.

Does anyone know if Conan's contract prevents him from appearing on TV until his new show starts? Because I could totally see him being a guest on Letterman the night Leno returns. He could even "fight" Stewart and Colbert again.

While we don't know the intimate details of his contract it appears that he is barred from hosting a show, so guest appearances may be permitted.

I too thought it would be great to see Coco on another show as a guest. Letterman would be near perfect for that. I know I'd tune in for that one.

And yes, I'm not going to be watching Leno when he comes back. I didn't care much for him before finding him to boring most of the time. Leno is too "safe." Conan was a bit more risky, but ultimately more entertaining, IMO.

When Conan does come back, I really hope he can find a way to bring back certain characters from the show, albeit in a different format.

Masterbating Bear? How about a giant masterbating chicken instead?
Triumph the Insult Comic Dog? How about Conquest the cagey cat, or Manny the pissed-off Poodle?

I just think it sucks that some of these characters in essence have been written off. While individually they may not have been the greatest, collectively they made up a fantastic ensemble funny tidbits.

I thought it was a nice send off on Friday as well, although I really wish this whole thing wouldn't have happened.  Like others have said, I can understand the ratings issue - especially for a network struggling like NBC - but I guess my wife and I have always enjoyed Conan's comedy/sense of humor, and liked seeing him get a shot at the "big time".  I do hope he lands on another network (like Fox), and we'll follow him there.

I personally don't get the appeal of Leno really, never have.  Prior to this whole issue with Conan, I thought Leno seemed like a nice enough guy but just didn't seem all that funny to me.  Now I think he's sort of a heel for taking over the Tonight Show again.  The guy obviously has plenty of money, and could have stood by his friend Conan and said "I'm not doing it either" and see what NBC would do there.  Of course, it is easy to say this as an outside observer, but he just didn't come off looking all that great in this to me.  We've always preferred Conan and Dave to Leno anyways, and we'll continue those viewing habits.

I think Leno has been a quiet ******bag in all of this. He comes off as if "Oh, it's the network's fault." True enough NBC came to him more than 5 years ago and told him he would lose the show to Conan. That was NBC's first mistake.

But then NBC gives him a show and one before Conan? Nothing really changed except for the time of the shows. Conan never got a fair shake at the Tonight show specifically. Had Leno properly retired as Carson and the other hosts of the Tonight show did before him, then NBC could have seen if it really was Conan's fault for the ratings or their decision to keep Leno on the air.

Had Leno retired fans of the Tonight show would have either stayed with the show or gone somewhere else (Letterman, etc.). But no, noone will ever know because that didn't happen. Depending on your comedic inclinations Conan is edgier while Leno is safer. Neither is wrong persay in their style. But for Leno not to step down at all was a bad move for all involved.

Really, NBC should have just recanted the offer to Conan about having the Tonight show and kept him at Late Night. Leno was kicking Letterman's butt in the ratings before all of this. It was ludicrous to change it all up. So to me it's mostly NBC's fault, then Leno. Coco doesn't have much to blame in all of this if you ask me.

What's ironic in all of this is that the biggest reason for NBC moving Conan to the Tonight Show was to not lose him to another network. Good call NBC... Looks like that will happen anyway.

For all the bad blood this has created, I'm betting Leno will never fully recover all of his fans. Some people will stay loyal to Conan. When Conan does get back on the air, if it competes with Leno/Letterman, then we may have yet another ratings war on our hands, and I'll be front and center of my TV for that supporting Conan.

What's interesting... Conan said he'd rather leave than watch The Tonight Show brand damaged.  But in a few months he'll be competing with the very show he wanted to protect!  And given that he and Leno attract a similar audience (more similar than he and Letterman do), he'll have a hand in ensuring The Tonight Show has the worst ratings in late-night.

It's the 11:35pm timeslot that he didn't want to see changed. That is the branding of the Tonight Show. Not 12:05 as NBC had suggested to him.

If he happens to get a new late night talk show and is lucky enough to trounce any of the competition or at least take a share of it, good on him. It's really NBCs fault at this point for making all the changes it did.

I still feel NBC should not have moved Leno out to begin with. Barring that Leno should never have been allowed a new show and one that leads into the Tonight Show.

As far as the Tonight Show have bad ratings due to Conan, well more power to Conan. Yes, he got a fat paycheck to leave NBC, but in principle he was still screwed over. NBC deserves whatever bad happens in the late night wars.

What Conan was talking about though was the fact that the Tonight Show is supposed to follow the local news... it's been in that slots since forever and he's right, it should stay there.

He also probably thought they'd back down.

That is what I think is the most surprising in all of this. NBC wanted Conan in that timeslot. Not Leno.

I don't see what NBC didn't try canning Leno first and stick with just Conan for a couple of months to see how things panned out. I'd make any guess without Leno, Conan's ratings would increase as he wouldn't have to compete against Leno and his fans in an earlier time slot.

This whole late night war has been about ratings, money, and trying to lock up talent for years to come.

The deal to give Conan O'brien the Tonight Show was inked back in 2003/04.  And that was set up so that when Leno's deal expired NBC could easily transition Conan O'brien into the Tonight Show.  That show has been the pinnacle for comics for generations, and the 11:35 timeslot gets far more viewers than the 12:35 timeslot.  NBC wanted to lock Conan in for that job rather than risk losing him to another network that WOULD offer him an earlier timeslot.  Why?  Because he had been number one in his timeslot.

The problem with this plan?  Leno's show had been number 1 in it's timeslot consistently for about 15 years.  No offense to David Letterman, but Jay Leno beat him in the ratings more often than not.  But NBC had a plan and wanted to stick to it.  And part of the reason why?  If NBC did not give the Tonight Show to Conan O'brien, then they were going to have to pay him between $30 and $40 million in compensation for letting him go away.  Still, Leno was number 1 by a substantial margin.  Why should he have to give up his gig where he had proven himself to be a top performer because of a short-sighted business deal that had been made 6 years earlier?

So NBC tried to have it both ways.  They came up with this plan to give Conan the Tonight Show, but also to keep Jay Leno in the fold.  They saw his success in late night and thought it could translate to a 10 PM show.  Plus Leno's show would be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper to produce 5 nights a week than 5 hours of scripted programming.  There was some initial ratings success because people wanted to see what was going to happen.

But much to NBC's chagrin the ratings dropped off.  And that hurt the affiliates ad sales.  Not just in the local commercial sales for the 10 PM hour, but in the hours after.  Ratings dropped off for the 11 o'clock news.  And that in turn hurt the Tonight Show.

So what choices did NBC have?  Can Leno?  Do that and you've got another expensive payout to make, but to Leno in this case.  Move Leno's show back to 11:35 and the Tonight Show to 12:05?  Conan wasn't having that.  But NBC didn't see Conan as the proven performer in his new timeslot like Leno had proven himself to be.

So Leno goes back to hosting the Tonight Show after the Olympics.  And he'll slug it out with Letterman for a while, but he'll probably get back on top ratings wise.  Letterman has only gotten to number 1 sporadically.

Conan will probably have a deal with either Fox or ABC pretty soon.  Kimmel's not that much of a performer and ABC may even be persuaded to ditch Nightline.  But Conan will be off the air until September due to contractual obligations.  Still,  it's going to take at least that long to get a new show set up.  Hopefully he'll be able to keep all of his staff.  Especially those people who made the move from NY to LA with him for the Tonight Show.

NBC is still pretty well screwed even if the situation has been resolved for now.  They've lost Conan.  They had to pay him over $30 million and almost $10 million to his staff.  Plus, they have to figure out a way to program 10 PM in prime time 5 nights a week.  Given the state that NBC primetime has been in for the past few years it doesn't look good.  They're going to be hurt by these moves for a while to come.  And it's all because NBC tried to lock in this long term deal way to far in advance.

Good observations Nick.

I like Leno, but it was after the news was over.  I'd prefer to see NBC bring back some shows that seemed to have a bit of a following, like Life.  I was so pissed when it was taken off the air.  I'd love see NBC bring back something like that a pump some more life into that network.

Post by: Nicklab on January 27, 2010, 10:13 AM
Your complaints about NBC primetime with shows like Life being taken off the air are indicative of why this grand experiment failed.  People like their shows in prime time.

NBC has been struggling to find some hit shows in primetime since the heady days of Must See TV.  And they've made a lot of gaffes.  They passed on some HUGE shows.  Like Lost, Desperate Housewives, the CSI franchise, etc.  So this debacle is another failure in a string of programming failures.

As for Conan?  I think he got a raw deal, but it was the network that was responsible for this state of affairs.  Not Jay Leno.  I think Conan can do well given some time.  But I also hope that Coco's able to get his new show launched while there's still a lot of goodwill being sent his way.

Actually, Conan made more than $33M on the deal and his staff got around $12M. So not a bad deal at all for them.

I still think it was a bad idea to change any of it. Barring that Leno should have just retired for good and not had a 10pm show. Though I do understand Leno wanting to have a show. Afterall he was number 1 in his timeslot. So it wasn't like he or his sow was performing badly.

Programming for the 10PM timeslot is all but locked up now. They have Law and Order filling in some of those spots, plus there are a couple of new shows already in production with episodes ready to go after the Olympics.

I'll be interested to see how well Leno does though. I suspect he'll get back a good portion of his viewers, but getting number 1 back may be a little tougher.

Ultimately he probably will get number 1 back, but should Conan get an 11:30 show on a different network, I think he'll give Leno and Letterman a run for their money. I know I"ll be sticking with Coco.

ABC doesn't want to get rid of Nightline, nor Jimmy Kimmel. So I don't see that as an option for Conan. Fox may seem like the best prospect but with Fox cancelling shows long before they should be, the future is not so bright there for Conan.

I personally would love to see Conan get the slot after Lettermen on CBS. Yes, I know there are a lot of Craig Ferguson fans out there, but I don't think they outnumber Conan fans. Besides the ironic continuity of "Late Night" hosts going to CBS would be intact and Letterman and Conan could share barbs against both Leno and NBC.

In any event, I enjoyed the last show of Conan. Freebird was a great choice of song. I'd have loved to have seen him do Bohemian Rhapsody too.

I look forward to Conan returning, hopefully sooner than later. It would be a loss for us all if he didn't return to late night TV, IMO.

Jay Leno wanted to continue to work.  NBC knew that.  He's a workaholic.  Why should NBC have let him go to a competitor since he so obviously wanted to continue working?  If you know anything about Leno, you would know that he was not only doing the show, but he was also playing shows in places like Las Vegas almost every weekend.  He was going to wind up working if he left NBC.  That much was plain as day.  And do you want to compete against the guy who was number 1 for you for 15 years?

Don't count ABC out of the Conan situation.  They want to compete in late night.  Why else would they have been airing Politically Incorrect and Jimmy Kimmel as long as they have?  Nightline has performed well, but there's been plenty of scuttlebutt within the industry that ABC could make a major move in late night for the right show.

Fox presents a different challenge since it will be a different time slot.  Fox only airs 2 hours of network programming every night, allowing the affiliates to run the local news from 10 - 11.  So how will Conan do at 11 PM against the network's local newscasts?  That makes Fox less than ideal.

Conan to slink off into obscurity on TBS... (http://www.mercurynews.com/celebrities/ci_14868054)

The offer from Fox must have been insulting if O'Brien is opting for basic cable.  Talk about disappointing...

I take it all back.

What i really wanted was to be able to make it say:

Conan to Replace Leno in 2009!!!! (UPDATE: Conan to Replace Leno in 2010!!!! (UPDATE: Conan to Replace Lopez in 2010!!!!))

But it was too long.

Well, it's just perfect now.  Conan replaced Leno twice!  Who knew?

I swear, one of these days, I'm gonna start up my own message board where I can edit thread titles to my heart's content, instead of having to watch helplessly from the sidelines while others screw them up all willy-nilly.

Is that Reno's head from The Professional (with the cap and glasses and all) on Conan's body?  I'm impressed, even though it looks like a quickie version

I can't take credit, I just found it on Google.  When Leon replaces Conan there will be better examples all over the place I'm sure.

An hour of Leon drinking milk and tenderly caring for his plant would be more captivating than an hour of the The Tonight Show in it's current incarnation.

Jay Leno's ratings fall below Conan's on 'The Tonight Show' (http://www.examiner.com/x-15166-Comedy-Examiner~y2010m4d23-Team-Coco-News-Jay-Lenos-ratings-fall-below-Conans-on-The-Tonight-Show-great-job-NBC)

Quote
For the first time, Jay Leno's  average weekly ratings among 18-49-year-old viewers has fallen below Conan O'Brien's... (TV analyst Joe) Adalian noted that Leno averaged only a 1.0 rating and a 5 share last week versus O'Brien's 1.1/5 average -- despite the fact that CBS was airing repeats of Late Show with David Letterman, which drew a 0.8/3 in the demo. Moreover, Leno now benefits from a much stronger nightly lead-in -- with shows like Parenthood and The Marriage Ref being aired by the network in the 10 00 p.m. time period -- than O'Brien did when his lead-in was Leno.

Quote
Seven weeks in, Leno is averaging a 1.0 in the 18-49 demo while David Letterman averages a 0.8. These are precisely the same numbers "The Tonight Show" and "The Late Show" were pulling seven weeks into Conan’s “Tonight” tenure.

The chart also reminds us that before “The Jay Leno Show” started last September (at week 16 into Conan’s run, I think), Conan won the 18-49 race against Letterman every single week last summer.

Only after “The Jay Leno Show’s” arrival as Conan’s 10 p.m. lead-in did Conan begin losing to Letterman in 18-49 for the first time.

Coco will also make his first TV appearance since leaving The Tonight Show on 60 Minutes this upcoming Sunday.

I did. It was funny. I expected more from the first episode though. The opening "last season" thing was very funny.

Got it backwards.

Jimmy Fallon can be funny but as a host, he's sooo awful.

The thing people forget, The Tonight Show is bupkis. It's should not be a Holy Grail to anyone. It was all about Carson. Had Johnny Carson not been on the air for decades, The Tonight Show would've been a forgotten program, probably canned in the 60's.  Who even remember who hosted before Carson? Steven Allen? Maybe?  ??? Any late night host is better off NOT getting the job because they will never measure up to a "legend".

It saves the networks from having to think up something new or original.

NYtimes.com: ‘Tonight’ Show Expected to Return to New York, With Fallon (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/21/business/media/tonight-show-expected-to-return-to-new-york-with-fallon.html?_r=0)

A plan is in the works to bring NBC’s “Tonight” show back to New York.

While the network has yet to complete a deal, it has made a commitment to Jimmy Fallon, the current host of its “Late Night” program, to have him succeed Jay Leno as the next host of “Tonight,” according to several senior television executives involved in the decision. The show would move from Burbank, Calif., back to New York, where it first started in 1954 with Steve Allen as host.

Some details remain to be worked out, including an exact timetable for the switch, though it is expected to take place by the fall of 2014 at the latest, the executives said in interviews this week.

NBC has quietly begun work on a new studio in its headquarters building at 30 Rockefeller Plaza as the home for the new “Tonight” show. The studio is part of a general reconstruction of the building being undertaken by Comcast, which this week completed a full takeover of NBC Universal.

An NBC spokeswoman declined to comment on the move, other than to say the network was building a new state-of-the-art studio for Mr. Fallon.

I hope Conan doesn't find out about this.
