Title: DC Universe Classics Wave 3
Post by: Brian on October 15, 2007, 10:24 AM
It looks like Mattel has officially announced Series 3 (http://www.thefwoosh.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=705&Itemid=1) of DCU Classics on the Fwoosh, which will be shown in the Dec 12 ToyFare.  Here's the lineup (BAF courtesy of Action Figure Insider (http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9348):

Robin (Tim Drake)
Nightwing
Sinestro
Deathstroke
Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)

BAF Solomon Grundy

I found this wave at the Target in Grand Forks, ND earlier today.  I didn't buy the Catwoman figure as it was scaled too small.  It was well done, but just wouldn't mesh and I think I have a similar version already that's a little larger.  I might regret that.  I did grab the Clayface which seemed about the largest figure of the bunch.  Overall the rest of the figures were nice, but scaled on the low side, seeming more 5" than the larger 6" they're supposed to be.  Was hoping to stumble into the Cassandra Cain Batgirl/Two-face wave as I don't have any figures of either of those two characters, but no luck there.

Scaled too small compared to Marvel Legends or other DC stuff?  I have found DC to be slightly larger than the ML stuff, but she seems to fit in well with my other Legends figs.

Scaled too small with other DC stuff.  Though that's really a silly argument in certain respects since it's all over the place with exactly zero consistency.  But it seemed small even for the DC line it comes from.

Posted previously:

Yeah, it might have actually fit kinda well with some of the other DC stuff like the Long Halloween Catwoman or Batgirl/Joker from the Unmasked series.  Obviously not well with the gargantuan Alex Ross stuff.  But yes with Marvel Legends Scaled stuff.

So I guess the perspective issue is mine and only relative when compared to the DC Direct stuff that is freaking huge :o  OK, so a day later I regret not picking it up. ::)

Sinestro
Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)

Cool.  ;D

Since DCD is doing a new Sinestro Corps (http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&album=2007_Wizard_World_Chicago%2FDC_Direct%2FGreen_Lantern_Series_3&pic=IMG_2352.jpg&dispsize=600&start=0) version, I'm hoping that the Mattel version is the classic black/blue outfit so I can retire this old DCD monstrosity...

As for Hal, I will buy him no matter which/what version he is... :)

I might pick up Green Lantern if he's readily available.  Wouldn't be opposed to a good version of Green Arrow either.

I don't think any of the BAF waves are physically in stores yet Dan.  BBTS had a pre-order up for the first wave (s?) only a month or so ago, so you're not missing out anything yet BAF-wise.

No, no BAF waves in stores yet - it sounds like the first wave of DCU Classics (with Metamorpho BAF) might hit around Christmas, or early '08.  As far as what has come before that, its been the DC Superheroes line, consisting of Superman and Batman's respective worlds.  Lots of Supes and Bats, some repackaged characters from the Batman comic line (Nightwing, Robin, Joker), and some new baddies/supporting characters (such as Clayface, Two Face, Catwoman, Azrael, Luthor, Darkseid, Mongul, Bizarro, Brainiac, Steel, Supergirl, Batgirl, etc.).

This line is shaping up to be pretty nice the way it looks.  At first I thought I might be all in on these, but with Indy Jones on the way next year and Hasbro saying we'll have a Star Wars lineup similar to this year (yikes), that's going to be enough to keep up on (alongside Marvel figures for me).  I know I'll pick up the main leaguers/characters (Flash, GL, Green Arrow, WW, Hawkman, Aquaman, etc.), and it would be nice to have a good mix of baddies to go alongside them.  We'll see.  There's already some BAFs (Grodd, Grundy) that I want, but I don't necessarily need the entire waves ::).

Thanks for the info. I like these but dont know if i can support another line. How do the Sup/Batman line look standing next to Marvel Legends?

Just out of curiosity, is anyone seeing the Two Face figure around lately?  I know it (and that wave in general) has been kind of a tough find, but I haven't ever seen Two Face here.  I've seen the Clayface/Nightwing/Catwoman wave a few times at Target now, but they skipped this wave (and WM doesn't seem to carry these anymore, at least not currently).  This is the one figure I still need to get this year, and I'm hoping more show up through the holidays, but I was just curious if anyone else has been seeing them.

I'm missing that one too Brian.  Afraid I'm no help though, as TRU is our only store carrying them and they repeatedly get the Superman/Supergirl/Bizarro wave time and time again.

HAven't been looking for that one, but all DCSH figs are pretty rare at the Targets in Mpls.

Looks like someone has posted scans of the premiere pics of Wave 3 on these forums (http://www.fantasticexclusive.com/fforum/topic.asp?whichpage=3&TOPIC_ID=1525&#36924).  Check 'em out while they're still up.  This wave includes:

Nightwing
Robin
Deathstroke
Green Lantern (Hal)
Sinestro
Grundy BAF

They look pretty spiffy.

I just saw pics of Nightwing, Robin, Sinestro and Hal and I'm having very serious thoughts about starting this line.  I come close everytime I see the black and grey Bats, Catwoman, Joker and Clayface and manage not to cave in.

Somebody talk me out of it.

I just saw some clearer pics of Hal/Sinestro and Nightwing/Robin on the AFI forums (http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9747&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=105) if anyone is interested.  They do look like some nice figures.

Most of the figures so far have looked fantastic, but I think I'm still going to just stick to the GLC stuff so I don't break the budget.   :-\

Thankfully I can be counted out.  If someone stumbles upon multiples of Sinestro, I'd take one, though the need is probably more urgent for Jeff and his GL focus.

WIZARD (http://www.wizarduniverse.com/magazine/toyfare/006949755.cfm) has the official pics up now of Wave 3 (that were leaked online earlier).  They have the date for these as May, but we'll see.  The whole wave looks pretty spiffy to me (Nightwing, Robin, Green Lantern, Sinestro, Deathstroke, Grundy BAF).  Man, I wish there wasn't so much great stuff from so many different lines at once this year (Star Wars, Indy, Marvel, DC, Joe, etc.).

Thanks for posting that Mikey.  Wow, that looks pretty amazing.  This line is looking pretty good so far, and I'm looking forward to Wave 3 most of all at this point.  Hopefully we'll get a few more peeks beyond that at Toy Fair.

Looks like Grodd will be quite big (groan) based on the size of the piece in Harley Quinn's package there.  They did a really good job on packing that in there.

I can see myself buying the full set for Grodd :-\  Quinn and Aquaman are fine, I'd buy them anyway.  Getting a Black Manta isn't all bad, but I'll probably trash the Superman and Firestorm figures outright.

I think we made the comments earlier about DCUC's BAF figures - not happy about some of the figures you need to buy to get the BAF but at least these are only five piece BAFs and not 8 or 10.  I do with Metamorpho would have been a bigger figure, but at least it's still realistic in the scale it's in.  That the next couple of BAFs are much bigger is great progress.

Are you channeling Jeff and his Lantern fetish?

I love the Grundy and the Sinestro/Lantern are very well done but there have been decent figures of both before.  The Nightwing is meh and the Robin is, well, Robin.  Deathstroke is a nice figure and I don't recall a good version of that previously.

Seriously.  The Hasbro Legends stuff has been lackluster and there hasn't been one wave where I liked every figure.  Other than the Galactus wave and maybe the Sentinal wave, the same is true for Toybiz's stuff.  Plus you're a Marvel fan, so you would naturally like the Marvel stuff better.  I'm a fan of both universes, so I have no set allegience.

Are you channeling Jeff and his Lantern fetish?

Not really, but I'm in the process of reading the current GL book in TPB form so Hal is fresh on my mind.

That's the thing, though.  I don't have any of these figures in my collection, so they're new to me.  I think the character selection is excellent.  Batman and his family are probably my favorite characters in the DC universe, so naturally I'd like Nightwing and Robin.  Like I said previously, GL is fresh on my mind, so that explains that.  Add in two cool villians and one badass zombie-like BAF and it's the best wave ever.

Chemical testing in the greater Boston area today? :-X

Not unless I missed a memo...

Oh yeah, it has been for a long time.  It didn't really matter until they started the BAF stuff though (obviously) because you could just pick and choose which I did from the very start.

And if I hadn't already kicked in on the DC Universe some time ago, I'd be happy too.  Though I've never really liked Nightwing, which has paid off in the sense that this would be the first figure I've ever bought of him, making the BAF marginally less painful.  Robin I don't like because of the colors.  My main frustration is that I have a lot of these characters already and now I have to see whether I want to render my older stuff useless and put out more money for new stuff.  A loose Mattel Robin figure is worth what?  $0.25?

As for the memo, I'll pass that along.  I forgot you don't work for the gubmint.

That's a great looking wave of figures!

As for pulling stuff off the shelves, I wouldn't mind seeing all the Speed Racer stuff go.  I have seen it sell some at Target but there's a ton of stuff in multiple scales out there that could potentially bind up a store for a long time.

If TRU is getting out in front of some type of huge recall I can't help but think that would really crush confidence in Mattel by parents and consumers.  Also makes me wonder if it wouldn't be worth picking up some Batman movie items now, just in case.

I read on the AFI forums that someone has found Wave 3 (GL/Nightwing/Robin/etc.) at a Target in CA, so they should be hitting elsewhere before too long (hopefully).  Also, The Fwoosh (http://www.thefwoosh.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1082&Itemid=93) has Part 3 of their interview with the Four Horsemen up, where they discuss DCUC (as well as MOTUC).

Part 3 (http://www.thefwoosh.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1091&Itemid=93) of the Fwoosh's interview with ToyGuru is now up, mainly discussing DCIH (and some more DCUC).  It sounds like in 2009, the Infinite Heroes line will up the articulation (including ball jointed elbows, knees, and possibly hips - with wrist and ankle articulation following as well).  They also have plans for a big lineup, with possibilities of vehicles and playsets as well.  It sounds like the sculpting will also change/improve.  Anyways, more at the link.  I really love the DCUC line, but I have to admit that while rearranging the collection lately (and trying to find room for things), the smaller scale becomes more appealing all the time.

I found one DCUC Series 3 figure at Target today (alongside an older Orion and Etrigan), the Green Lantern.  I gladly picked it up, and its a great figure.  It really reminds me of playing with the Super Powers stuff when I was a kid - just a perfect Hal Jordan figure overall.  Can't wait to find Nightwing and Robin though as well.

I received my case of Wave 3 from BBTS yesterday, and man this is a nice wave.  I'm really happy just to get an all-new Nightwing (one of my favorites), as well as Robin, but the rest of the wave is quite well done too.  I found GL at Target a week or two ago, but I don't even mind having an extra since that figure is so well done too.  Really reminds me of a modern incarnation of the Super Powers figure I had as a kid.  One thing to watch out for, at least for me, was the Sinestro figure.  I got the "regular" version, and once I opened him up and moved his arms down (they were up in the package) it revealed that the shoulder joints were bright yellow (and this isn't the Sinestro Corps version).  It might just be me, but it could be a possible paint problem to be on the lookout for.  Deathstroke is a really nice figure too, and the Solomon Grundy "collect and connect" is top notch.  I was looking forward to this wave a lot this year, and it didn't disappoint.  I've noticed that this has been popping up at all of our Targets in town, although all I've seen so far is Green Lantern.  TRU doesn't seem to have any DCUC right now here, and WM hasn't picked them up yet either.

Anyone need my extra Green Lantern?
