Title: The Office
Post by: Matt on September 28, 2006, 11:20 AM
I'm embarrassed and ashamed that we're now into the third season of the best comedy currently on television, and there's not a corresponding thread here about it. . .until now.

I just wanna say that I'm a manly-man who doesn't typically fall for sappy romantic stuff--especially when it involves fictional characters, but this whole Jim and Pam thing has turned me into a weepy thirteen-year-old girl.

I think we've had discussions on The Office in the "Official Television Thread."

Either way, it's a good show.  I enjoy watching it just to see how bad Michael can screw things up.

Seriously, he should be fired by now.

I really love the show... thank god YouTube is around, as I never seem to catch any of the episodes on TV. I feel like The Office belongs on HBO with Curb Your Enthusiasm, or on Fox with Family Guy...

Does the finest network comedy since Arrested Development not deserve a thread of it's very own?

I'm more of a fan of the British Office but I really like how NBC took the concept and gave it it's own unique touch. While similar, the characters are different. Carrell is less of an a-hole and more neurotic than Gervais was and Dwight's character is a little less annoying and way more kiss a$$ than his british equivalent, Gareth. Also, I went to college in Scranton PA so it's nice to see all the subtle references to the town itself. I hope this show lasts and i'm suprised America has embraced it...

This is one of the very few shows that the wife and I watch (it's difficult to find something we both like).

The show never fails to have at least one laugh-out-loud moment in each episode. Last week's---the very last scene when Michael and Dwight black-lit the motel room. Priceless.

I almost hate to admit it, but after last night, The Office moved past My Name Is Earl as my favorite show (Earl is still a close second, though).

Last night's episode was great, and Michael and Dwight are a great team.  But the best part was the preview for next week, where Michael meets Jim's hot co-worker chick from Stamford and says "You look exotic.  Was your dad a G.I.?"

Classic.

I really enjoyed last night's episode as well, and we're looking forward to next week's too.  Its going to be interesting with the consolidation of the two branches.  Its going to be great by Nov. 30th, where three of our favorite shows will be on one night:  Scrubs, The Office, and Earl.  It probably will finish well behind the "big guns" of CSI and Grey's Anatomy in the ratings, but as long as they are on - I don't care :).  There aren't a lot of quality comedies on network TV anymore, and these three are some of the best.

I only caught bits and pieces of last night's episodes as I had company over.  Even with limited viewing, I was laughing quite a bit.  The Michael Dwight chest bump and celebrating over actually doing nothing, Kelly almost throwing Ryan through the refrigerator after hearing Scranton wasn't closing and Stanley's look when he found out Scranton was staying open.

Next week looks great.  Can't wait to see Dwight's reaction to Jim being back and then his reaction when he finds out Jim is his boss.  Should be great.

THE MERGER
8:30pm (Eastern) 2006-11-16
The Scranton branch and the Stamford branch of Dunder-Mifflin are merged, bringing old friends Jim and Pam back together after months apart. Michael and Dwight and the other employees deal with the changes.

Jim and Pam, back together again!  But how will the new hotness (Karen) play into it all?  And how will former Assistant Regional Manager Assistant to the Regional Manager Dwigt react to Jim being second-in-command?  Find out tonight!

(And I believe this is a "super-sized" episode this evening, so set your DVRs accordingly. . .)

Michael tries to be supportive when he finds out one of his new employees - presumably someone from the Stamford branch - has a prison record.

Oh, and tonight's episode was written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (creators of the British original), so it should be pretty good. . .
Title: Re: The Office
Post by: Sprry75 on December 1, 2006, 08:50 AM
MMMmmmmnnnnyyeeahh....

I dunno.  Michael's getting a little too over the top.  He was at his best in the second season, where his eccentricities were funny, but not unbelievable.  Lately, he doesn't seem like an off-kilter, lonely, insecure guy putting up a "best boss in the world" front, but someone who is seriously mentally ill.

And I'm not getting the purpose of the Stamford/Scranton merger.  Andy and Karen are the only ones who bring anything to the table, but they're really underused.  The rest of the Stamford crew seem to only be there so they can quit one by one.

I hate to admit that I'm tuning in more for the Jim & Pam Show than for the Office, but the best parts of last night were the love triang--er--square with Jim & Karen & Pam & Andy.
Title: Re: The Office

I feel the same way.  Michael's character is way over the top this season.  It's too much -the prison speech (with the dew rag) was simply unfunny.

Last night's episode was definitely the weakest of the entire series.

Michael needs one of his epiphany scenes where he justifies his existence -

A BENIHANA CHRISTMAS

Special Time 8/7c 2006-12-14

In a special one hour Christmas episode, Michael sends out an inappropriate Christmas Card which lands him in hot water with his girlfriend Carol. Meanwhile tensions mount on the party planning committee between Angela, Pam and Karen. The resulting tension leave the office with two competing Christmas parties.

Last year's Christmas episode was a classic, so hopefully this one will be just as good.

Here's a review I agree with:

Quote
"The Office Season 3" brings higher production value (the role of unsteady camerawork as a character takes a backseat due to even slightly better standards), and entirely new batch of characters, and much more forced humor.  Originally praised for it's "subtle" jokes, "The Office Season 3" is already catering to a bigger audience with forced punch lines of it's own kind (I can almost hear the studio laugh-track).  Contrary to many reviews, "The Office" was never truly subtle to begin with (especially compared to it's British provider), but structured and smart no doubt.

This season of "The Office" already assumes that bigger is dumber, and we are getting force fed a predictable plot, which will probably resolve after a dragging series of expositions complete with trite character and environment comparisons.  Michael's ignorance and Dwight's stupidity have escalated to make them both humanly unrecognizable.

"The Office" has gone from a believable documentary carried by it's acute observations of The Human Condition through the eyes of a lovable American workforce, to an over-the-top farce involving site gags and shock value.  I'll hope for the best, but might prefer savoring the days when low budget meant clever writing, and true innovation meant staying on the air.

I enjoyed a lot of the episode when compared to what else is on TV, but the show is losing ground with me from previous seasons.

The opening sequence was painful, Rainn Wilson was so far out there the other characters were left with nothing to do but react.  I'll fault the writing and a scene that should have been resolved in half the time, but when you've got 42 minutes to fill instead of 21 I guess you've got to stretch things out.

I'm still watching, but I miss/hope for episodes with more character development from the acting, writing and directing rather than relying on situation comedy to do all the heavy lifting.

Care to explain why you feel that way?

Mmmm...mostly because I suck balls, I guess.

But also a little bit because I just watched the Season 1 DVD again last weekend, and have been comparing this season's episodes.  As a ball sucker, I'm not really good at explaining myself (usually all I can manage is "mmmmfrffrmfffrrmbbllt," or if I've had a few drinks, "ssshllsssshslrrthtbbllt"), but in Seasons 1 and 2, the show seemed to just nail it; the episodes were really brilliant, and now it just seems like the show is trying to take itself to 11 all the time.  It's like its trying to out-Office the Office.

Another thing that's gone by the wayside is the kind of comic melancholy that the first two seasons had.  There were always rumors of downsizing, and nobody was really happy except Michael, who was happy in a kind of blissfully ignorant way.  There was a nice thematic juxtaposition between some truly hilarious situations and plotlines and this kind of Scranton-sad melancholy.

That's mostly gone, I suppose because they got the payoff with the Stamford branch closing.  Now it's just wackiness from Michael and Dwight.

Admittedly, I'm being way too hard on the show--it's still better than Who Wants to Deal with 500 Big Losers or whatthefuckever they're showing on every other channel, and it really isn't jumping the shark, and the episode with Dwight's cousin is one of my favorite episodes, and the Christmas episode wasn't thaaat bad, but I just wish they'd tone it down a little, maybe be a little more respectful of the whole "mockumentary" style.

I dunno, I'm not a critic.  I just haven't been nearly as impressed with this season as I was by the other two.  That's all.  Just my opinion.  If you don't agree...well, mmmmfrffrmfffrrmbbllt.

EDIT If I weren't so busy...well, you know, I would've read Deanpaul's post.  That review really sums it up well, I think.

If you're gonna be a ball sucker, you might as well take some pride in your work--and Sprry's the best there is.  My hat's (and pants) off to you, good Sir.

---

I love the show, but I do agree with you guys somewhat in that there's something just a little off about this season compared to last (tall order, living up to Season 2 - that's one of the best seasons of any given show I've ever seen in my life--nearly every episode was a classic).

I think most of it can be attributed to the whole Stamford thing.  With Jim being gone, there was nobody to keep Dwigt and Michael in check, and the Jim and Pam relationship (arguably the main focus of the whole show) was put on pause.  Plus, we were spending a good chunk of those episodes with Jim at the Stamford branch, with a whole bunch of people we didn't know, so yeah, it felt weird.

So that may have been the point--that everything felt weird without Jim around.  Granted, "weird" doesn't necessarily make for "good TV," but my guess is that the further we get into this season, the better the episodes will get.  The Karen/Jim/Pam love triangle (or rectangle, if Roy's back in the mix) will shake itself out, as will the whole Michael/Jim/Dwigt/Andy thing.

So I do agree that up to this point, this season hasn't lived up to the standards that Season 2 set.  But we're only halfway through Season 3 - and it's still way too early to throw the "jump the shark" phrase around, in my opinion (for the record, I'm guessing the show will JTS when Jim and Pam eventually get together).

The scene with Dwight and Pam where she was crying is what I've been missing in the recent episodes.  He seemed like a character there, rather than a caricature.  It was short, sweet and his timing on asking her if it was that time of month was perfect.  I really enjoyed the episode tonight.

Dear World Wide Readership

Best wishes and Happy New Year from all of us at Dunder Mifflin Paper Products and Schrute Farms! (Note the exclamation point! I really mean it!!)

Before I speak to you about my new years resolutions for ‘07’, let’s go over some past resolutions and their current status.

‘99 – quit biting fingernails.
Outcome? Done. On it. Haven’t chewed them since. Ever. Not one nibble. Even when I get a hangnail.

’00 – increase farm productivity by 18%.
Outcome? Schrute Farms had a record harvest that year surpassing ’99 by over 21%. Home run.

’01 – increase farm productivity by additional 4%.
Outcome? Not achieved. Profits increased by 7% but productivity when down by 2.5 %. It was a very dark time. Things got kind of ugly. (This was the year Mose gave up his moto-cross dream and hunkered down and committed to doing some serious beet farmin’.)

’02 – be more social.
This was the year I got into online gaming. Also began 4 year championship laser tag run. Went on more than 3 dates. Spruced up wardrobe. Switched deodorant to the kind that the sailors use.

’03 - write and record my songs and music.
Outcome? Not necessary. Decided against it. Waste of time. Songs are for children and inmates. Switched resolution to increase farm productivity by additional 3%. Achieved new resolution.

’04 – find mate.
Outcome? Dated more than 2 different women during this calendar year. Kissed approximately one of them on the mouth.

Increased sales, was voted top salesman by Dunder Mifflin, won first ‘Dundie’ Award ™, increased farm productivity by 2.7%, asked for and received raise, spent Christmas with Michael Scott, took Mose to the international harvester exposition (and Indian casino), moved up to a daily regimen of 27 pushups and 85 situps.

Did not achieve goal of finding mate.

Am OK with that.

’05 – Can’t remember what I resolved to do.
These pages in my diary are covered in chocolate milk.

’06 – Become top regional salesperson third year running and achieve ‘assistant regional manager’ status.
Done and done. Also found potential mate. Also vanquished Jim. Purchased spud gun. Learned Klingon. Personally saved Scranton branch from being downsized.

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Drum-roll please…. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr….

Dwight Schrute’s New Years Resolution ‘07

I, Dwight Schrute, resolve, in the year 2007, to display more wisdom and benelovence to my inferiors.

It is said, keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Well I say, keep everyone as close as possible to you because you don’t know who is your friend or your enemy. Keep the people below you even closer if that’s possible. Even if they have to be inside you.

Remember: they work for you. They must respect you. If you can fool them into thinking that you really care, you can get them to do anything for you. Even kill if necessary.

Now I’m not saying I want Ryan or Kevin to kill a competitor or Andy or anything, but it would be nice to know that they would if I asked them to.

What are your new years resolutions. You can reply by clicking on something below.

That is all.

Definitely the funniest, but I don't know about the only one.  I was laughing when Toby was mentioning all the people who sent him the email, including his ex-wife.  And Andy cutting Phyllis' head off with a chainsaw and then making the chainsaw sound.  I'll agree that it wasn't the best episode ever (made more difficult by following the greatest episode of Earl ever), but it was still better than most of the drek on TV nowadays.

New episode tonight!

"The Return"

Oscar returns from his long vacation with mixed emotions on whether or not he still wants to be a part of the office. Meanwhile, Andy takes advantage of recent events to get closer to Michael. Jim turns to Karen and Pam for help to stage a prank on a new target.

Note:  This episode was previously titled "Oscar's Return," but now it's just "The Return," for some reason.  Could that mean that Dwight also comes back to Dunder-Mifflin this week?  He is one of the Staples of the show, after all. . .

Post by: Sprry75 on January 20, 2007, 07:31 AM

I would probably bitch about it if I could, but I had to suck balls late so I missed it.  But Mrs. Sprry75 said it was a pretty good episode.

Funny--I didn't think it was all that great, but I was having problems with my TV antenna, and was pissed about that, so that could have been the reason.  Dwigt "consoling" Pam was easily the funniest scene.

Well, obviously Mrs. Sprry75's tastes need to be taken into account, as she married a complete douche.

On another note, after missing the last two episodes, I saw "The Return," and thought it was just dandy.  Not the best episode ever, but certainly a return to form.  Dwight kicks ass, and Michael's frustration with Andy was classic.  And most importantly, relatively subtle.  I about peed my pants when he was hiding behind the door.

On another note, I've been watching this show religiously so I can have an opinion that doesn't suck balls when I post about it here :-* , I saw "The Return," and thought this episode was just dandy.  One of the best episodes ever, and a nice return to form.  Dwight kicks ass, and Michael's frustration with Andy was classic.  All things Dwight ruled.  "For your convenience I've prepared my work resume, my special skills resume, and Dwight Schrute trivia."  Classic.  "I don't want to do your laundry anymore."  And most importantly, relatively subtle.  I about peed my pants when Michael was hiding behind the door.  And Ryan telling Jim he might help prank Andy if he had asked 10 years ago.  And Andy freaking out about his lost phone.  Phyllis blocking her drawer from Andy.  Even Angela had a human moment inviting Oscar to be on the party committee.  We saw some movement on the whole Jim/Pam thing, and it was beautifully tied into Karen not wanting to help with the prank.  All that, and "gaycation" was easily my favorite part of it all.

Where was Toby?  I thought we would see him with Oscar coming back or at least when Andy punched the wall.

Michael celebrates Phyllis' wedding shower by bringing two adult performers into the office, a stripper and Ben Franklin. Meanwhile, Karen confronts Pam about her past history with Jim.

"Yesterday, I was scraping some gunk off my wall sockets with a metal fork, and I gave myself the nastiest shock.  And when I came to, I had an epiphery.  Life is precious.  And if I die, I want my. . .  son?. . .  to know the dealio.  The dealio of life."

I have watched this here and there, usually in snippets....maybe three whole episodes...but have been trying to remember to tivo it so I can keep up.

Finally remembered last week, but I've gotta tell you....the wedding episode....a lot of it wasn't so much funny as just awkward and embarrassing...and a lot of it was just unbelievable.   Is this the loss in quality some of you have been talking about, or is it a fluke?

Still..some parts were gold...the Pavlovian training at the beginning was hilarious.  So was the jealousy over the father's part in the wedding...everything, though, from the point where Michael took horned in with the rest of the wedding party through to the final toasts just seemed like they were trying too hard (excluding Dwight kicking out the senile uncle..that was funny!).
Title: Re: The Office
Post by: Matt on February 12, 2007, 12:33 PM
Yeah, it wasn't the best episode.  Michael was a "tad" over-the-top--and not in a funny way.  Less of Michael, and it would have been better.  Still, I'll take an average, or even mediocre episode of The Office over the best episode of any other comedy currently on TV.

But there were some highlights.  My favorites:

". . .And do you, Phyllis, take Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration, to be your lawfully-wedded husband?"

-Creed pulling the ol' switcheroo with the wedding gifts

-And this one:

"Business School"

Michael accepts an invitation from Ryan to be a guest speaker at his business school. Meanwhile Dwight battles wits with a bat that gets loose in the office while Pam is entered in her first art show.

(This episode was directed by my favorite director--if not my favorite person ever to walk the face of the earth, Joss Whedon.)

"A boss is like a teacher.  And I am like the cool teacher, like Mr. Handel.  Mr. Handel would hang out with us, and he would tell us awesome jokes, and he actually hooked up with one of the students.  Um, and then like twelve other kids came forward.  It was in all the papers.  Really ruined eighth grade for us."

Yeah, "Roy Vs. Jim" has been pretty much a foregone conclusion from the beginning, but it looks like we'll have to wait a little while to see what happens next.  I read elsewhere that there won't be another new episode until April 5.

Good episode, though.  Yeah, Michael was a little over the top, but it wasn't as bad as the wedding episode.  Would have liked to have seen more of the supporting characters, but there was a lot going on with the mains. . .

I saw the episode last night around 9:30 after a party, and Kris summed it up for me.  She said, it wasn't very funny.  Still funny, but not as funny as usual.  Loved Creed and the fake id line, liked Jim and the CFO shooting hoops, well - liked a lot of things.  But didn't love it as usual.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Roy.  It had better be funny, because that's why I watch the show.  It can be uncomfortable, but it better be funny.  The ending last night was just uncomfortable.

I also forgot to mention, the episode was directed by JJ Abrams (Alias, MI:III, etc.).  That kind of explains the intense action sequence when Roy threw his mug at the mirror in the bar.

Not a new episode, but what NBC is calling a "new-peat" tonight:

Quote
In an unusual experiment aimed at improving ratings for reruns, NBC (this) week plans to air two previously seen half-hour episodes of “The Office” that have been re-edited into a new hour-long show. Some scenes will be cut so producers can weave in unaired footage that introduces a new storyline into the older episodes.

Producers of “The Office” say re-editing the episodes is a way to keep the program’s rabid fan base from moving on … “Their loyalty must be rewarded somehow, and we don’t have the budget to send out 10 million muffin baskets,” says Executive Producer Greg Daniels.

The two previous episodes which will be shown tonight as a remixed, hour-long episode are "Traveling Salesmen" and "The Return."

No Office next week, but on March 29, there will be an Office marathon, hosted by Paul "Toby" Lieberstein, featuring the episodes "Diversity Day," "Health Care," "Sexual Harassment," "The Injury," and "Gay Witch Hunt."

The next new episode will be on April 5.

It looks fake to me, too, but according to Wired's blog (http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2007/03/wired_news_wire.html), it was real:

Quote
So of course, WIRED being WIRED, we wanted a cover that was smart and showy. And as Creative Director I wanted something that hadn't been done before. We settled on the idea of printing on clear acetate. But it had to be interactive. Now you’re in a business suit—now you’re not.

Then we wrestled with the question of how to best show the real goings on inside the modern American office. How about using “The Office” as a model? And who would we like to see practicing what we're preaching? Dwight? Ehhh...notsomuch. Of course, Pam. So we called NBC and pitched our idea and
Jenna Fischer (thankfully!) liked the idea.

Michael Elins photographed her in Los Angeles in a dingy little studio. And yes, the whole thing is real; we shot it in two parts, Jenna in her business suit and her birthday suit (really). She was a great sport about the whole thing. Funny and endearing.

And no, I don't have outtakes.

UNPRINTABLE? AN OFFICE IN CRISIS - The office is in crisis mode after a large shipment of Dunder Mifflin paper is accidentally sent out with an obscene watermark - and Michael tries to manage the media with an impromptu press conference. Jim and Andy also attempt to calm the high school principal who has sent out prom invites on the affected stationery.

"We're in a crisis.  Apparently, a disgruntled employee at the paper mill decided that it would be funny to put an obscene watermark on our 24-pound cream letterstock.  Five hundred boxes has gone out with the image of a beloved cartoon duck. . . performing. . . unspeakable acts upon a certain cartoon mouse, that a lot of people like.  I've never been a fan."

While the group expects a fun outing at Lake Scranton, Michael has planned a day of Survivor-like competitions to find his successor. Meanwhile, Pam is not asked to join in any of the activities and is forced to watch Jim and Karen have fun together.

Looks like last night's episode isn't up there yet.  Whoops.

I BitTorrent all the Office episodes.  Had last night's episode downloaded just an hour or two after it aired.  That's the way to go.

Andy floating in the lake was pretty good, too.

Creed's stuff was good, as was Andy's (as was Toby's, as was Stanley's, as was Dwight's walk on the coals).  But the best part was Pam--that was a really well-written speech she gave at the end.  Should be setting up some pretty interesting things for next week's hour-long season finale.

I just don't like Stanley too much, but obviously not because he's black.  Seriously.  I just don't like him because he's a negative turd, and a little too much like a bunch of negative turds I've actually worked with.

Crap, does that make me a racist?  No, because the turds I've worked with were all white.

Not that I noticed.

I wish Pam had been a little more romantic in her speech.  Just wanting to be friends and joke around with Jim?  **** that.  Chicks only get that if there's a prospect for  :-* and she should know it.

I was glad to hear her dis Roy a little bit, though.

I also wished that they would have spent a little more time on the Jim reaction shot after the Pam speech.  But that is somewhat of an exception, as I think the Jim reaction shots have been a bit overused this season.

Dwight's on a pedastal, but Creed is rapidly climbing to second favorite character status.

I was also disappointed that Pam told Toby she was going to be in a two-piece, but then it never showed her in a two-piece, which caused me to have unnecessarily opened a certain product.

I love Stanley.  Probably because I'm a negative turd.  The scene from last season where he's jumping all over Ryan for hitting on his daughter is one of the funniest things I've ever seen on the show.  He's just got a funny look about him (yes, because he's a negro), and an equally-funny delivery.

I don't know--I think it was pretty well-done and true to the character.  I mean, she admitted she canceled the wedding, just because of him, and that says quite a bit.

Yeah, he's definitely up there.  Nearly everything Creed does is gold, Jerry, gold.

I was also disappointed that Pam told Toby she was going to be in a two-piece, but then it never showed her in a two-piece, which caused me to have unnecessarily opened a certain product.

Just imagine how disappointed Toby was!  That's been a hilariously-sad little sub-sub-plot this season.

NBC has announced (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117964862.html?categoryId=14&cs=1) their plans for the Fall 2007 season:

Quote
Peacock's plan for its Thursday night comedy block is coming into focus.

"The Office" is expected to get the 9 p.m. tentpole slot, with "My Name Is Earl" at 8, "30 Rock" at 8:30 and "Scrubs" at 9:30.

NBC will pick up six one hour eps of "The Office" for a total of 30 segs. The net picked up just 18 eps of "Scrubs"; in the weeks that the medical laffer doesn't air, net will air a one-hour episode of "The Office."

I think I might be done with Earl, since The Office isn't directly following it anymore.

Good to see 30 Rock and The Office back-to-back.  No more sitting through Scrubs.  (http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/smilies/thumpsup.gif)

-------

Season finale at 8/7 on Thursday.  Rumor has it two different endings were filmed--which one airs is dependent on whether or not Rashida Jones' pilot series gets picked up by Fox. . .

I'm pissed.

My wife signed me up to go--get this--dry pack canning for our church on Thursday.  So while all you guys are yukking it up during the hour long season finale, I'll be up to my waist in lentils, wheat, and...whatever else churches dry pack.

Effing apocolyptic Mormons.  Anyone but Romney in '08!

I don't really think Jesus wants me to miss the season finale, regardless of how many poor people will eat the dry barley I can pack into a tin can.

So just say the word, and I'll be more than happy to upload it for you.  Not a big deal.

And I was in the wrong for posting a picture of Fred Dryer, when posting a picture of Stepfanie Kramer may have been a little more visually-appealing (although not by much).  Would have made even less sense, though.

Creed Thoughts

Hey-o, everyone out there in SyberWorld. It’s old Creed Bratton coming at your again, here from my perch as a Quality Assurance Manager at Dunder Mifflin paper. Just a few observations on the world around me.

What do you guys think is the best kind of car? To me, you can’t beat motorcycles. They’re small, and dangerous.

I got into a car accident yesterday and I just took off. It didn’t look too bad. The guy was making a big deal out of it, but come on – dogs don’t live forever.

Sometimes when I’m sick, or feeling blue, I drink vinegar. I like all kinds: balsamic, vodka, orange juice, leaves.

Working in an office is fine, but I’d rather be a millionaire. [Elaborate on this. It’s interesting. Maybe Trademark it, too.]

Today in my office where I work as Director of Quality Assurance, we went to the beach for some reason that was never adequately explained. When we were there, our manager told us to eat hot coals. I thought that was a little bit untoward so I ate a fish. Then a woman I have literally never seen before in my entire life started talking very loudly about something involving Halpert. She was agitated, I’d say. From what I could guess, she was definitely on drugs of some kind, perhaps cocaine, or maybe ‘drines. Also, she is a knock-out. She reminds me of a young Daphne Du Maurier. Also, I stupidly ate the fishbones. I told myself “never again” after the last time, but then you turn around, and bam, they’re in my mouth. I also ate 55 hot dogs in 15 minutes, which is a world record.

Everybody remembers: “April showers bring May flowers.” But no one remembers how the rest of that goes. Which I find so frustrating.

Prediction: the Orioles will win the World Series over the Pirates in seven games.

Prediction: the space program will be renamed the Outer Space Program by 2060.

Prediction: someday we will be able to travel faster than sound. We will “break the sound barrier.”

Prediction: [note – need more predictions.]

Reminder: Michael’s safe combo: 26-32-20.

Hey, I thought Ryan said he didn't put that online.  I guess Creed figured out how to.  I can't wait until Ryan tells Michael to get him some coffee.  Also, the look on his face after he dumped Kelly was the best.
Title: Re: The Office
Post by: ruiner on May 18, 2007, 09:24 AM
I thought for sure they would give Karen the job so Jim and Pam could hit it off again.

Other than that, I thought it was an uneventful episode - I thought for sure the show would leave us wondering who would get the job - you know, to keep the viewers interested in the new season.

It felt like a series finale vs. a season finale.

Other than that, I thought it was an uneventful episode

Really?

I wonder if that's because it was an hour long.  I thought a lot of stuff happened in this episode.  Jan flipping out and getting canned (and I mean that in every possible sense), Jan and Michael getting back together (and apparently moving in together), Jim apparently dumping Karen and asking Pam out on a date (although I think there's more to the Jim/Karen thing that we'll learn more about next season, just like they did with Jim/Pam in the beginning of this season), and Ryan getting promoted to corporate and dumping Kelly.  That's a lot of stuff going on--it'd be way too much to pack into a standard episode--maybe even a "super-sized" episode.
Title: Re: The Office
Post by: ruiner on May 18, 2007, 01:58 PM
Really.

I thought it was uneventful.  Nothing happened that shocked me.  Again, they should have set the ending up as a cliffhanger - who's going to move to corporate?  Will it be Jim?  If so, how will he keep his relationships with Karen and Pam?  Will it be Karen?  Again, same question.

In regards to what actually happened:

Jim and Pam - we all saw that coming - the Beach episode set that up.

The whole Jan thing doesn't really bother me - she's a disposable character, I never cared what happened to her - there's no emotional connection with her character.  Don't get me wrong, I liked her in the beginning but then she turned into a nympho and the whole situation ballooned out of control and made no sense.

Why is she unstable and why should I care?

Ryan being promoted - aside from ruining the whole "wait til next season" idea, I again, don't really care that he's (most likely) gone from the show.  Again, he and Kelly are disposable.  They don't make the show like the other characters.

Yeah, but they did the whole cliffhanger thing last year--and waiting for September sucked.  I'm glad they did something different this time.

Quote

Right, but there's still some things that need to be resolved.  Like, what happened to Karen?  Will she be back in Scranton?  Is she staying in New York?  Did she and Jim break-up?  Just 'cause Jim asked Pam out on a date doesn't mean Karen's out of the picture.  They left that intentionally ambiguous, which is kind of a mini-cliffhanger itself.

By herself, Jan isn't a particularly compelling character, but she gives Michael something to do ( (http://images.dvdtalk.com/images/smilies/naughty.gif) ) and their dynamic is somewhat interesting and has now gone a whole new direction.  That's why you should care.

Quote
Ryan being promoted - aside from ruining the whole "wait til next season" idea, I again, don't really care that he's (most likely) gone from the show.

Ryan may be gone from Scranton, but he's not gone from the show, not by a long shot.  He just took Jan's old job, that's all.  He'll be around just like Jan was--and now he's Michael's boss, which sets up some funny stuff for next year.  And B.J. Novak writes and produces for the show, so he'll be around.

I just don't like Stanley too much, but obviously not because he's black.  Seriously.  I just don't like him because he's a negative turd, and a little too much like a bunch of negative turds I've actually worked with.

How can you not love Stanley after this exchange:

Dwight:  Now, let us discuss precipitation.  Stanley, when rainfall occurs, does it usually fall in a liquid, solid, or gaseous state?

Stanley:  Liq-uid.

Dwight:  Very good  You've earned one Schrute Buck.

Stanley:  I don't want it.

Dwight:  Then you have been deducted fifty Schrute Bucks.

Stanley:  Make it a hundred.

Dwight:  Wh. . .  don't you wanna earn Schrute Bucks?

Stanley:  No.  In fact, I'll give you a billion Stanley Nickels if you never talk to me again.

Dwight:  What's the ratio of Stanley Nickels to Schrute Bucks?

Stanley:  Same as the ratio of unicorns to leprechauns.

Publisher MumboJumbo has entered into a multiyear relationship with the Universal Pictures Digital Platforms Group to develop mass-market games based on the NBC series "The Office."

Developed and published exclusively by MumboJumbo, "The Office" game will debut in the fall as a PC game sold at retail and available as an online digital download. Next year, the plan is to create additional games based on "The Office" license beginning with portable experiences for the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable.

MumboJumbo CEO Mark Cottam said the company is exploring additional avenues for games based on the Emmy-winning series, including digital distribution via Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade and Sony's PlayStation Network Platform.

"We looked at the broad demographic that 'The Office' attracts and see this as a TV property that's growing in popularity," Cottam said. "We believe this is a property we can build a franchise around with multiple games across multiple devices for many years to come."

Mike Suarez, vp product development at MumboJumbo, said the first "Office" game would be classified as a task-management game like "Diner Dash." Players will assume the role of Jim Halpert (John Krasinski in the show) and interact with such other characters as Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) and Michael Scott (Steve Carell).

Suarez said the game introduces a rival notion that hasn't been seen in the genre, which pits Jim against characters like Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) and brings tension to the gameplay.

Overall, the game will retain the humor and jokes that fans of the show love. The fact that all characters will appear as bobble heads is a reference to Dwight's bobble head on his desk.

"We're having ongoing discussions with NBC about this game, and they really understand the video game space," Suarez said. "Players will be able to click on characters and hear audio clips from the past seasons of the show. We'd also like to incorporate video clips at some point, perhaps with the portable games."

Cottam said that moving forward, discussions between the gamemakers and NBC writers likely will result in new content for future games. He said this relationship could work both ways, with original ideas for the games potentially being used in future TV episodes.

"There's so much audio and visual content from the first few seasons that we have more then enough content for this game, but the door is definitely open for original content should we need it," Suarez said.

The first PC game will focus on past story lines and situations.

Mobile game publisher Indiagames released "NBC's The Office Games" for cell phones in July06. That game was a collection of mini-games like desktop mini-golf that had the NBC license added late in development. The game offered little in the form of collaboration with show creators or inclusion of cast members into play.

About thirty years ago, I fell in love with a blond woman. She wore vests and skirts and had flowers in her hair. I think her name was Nancy. If you’re out there, Nancy, I’m not mad at you anymore. You can keep the hundred bucks you stole. I just want you back. And my birth certificate.

Books are great when you can’t find a pillow.

Creed Thoughts

In my younger days, I spent a lot of time sleeping in a lot of places. Some of those places were bus stations. Everyone knows that hotels are for suckers, so why pay for lodging when you can get it for free? The problem is, there are a lot of crazies out there, so if you’re going to sleep in the bus station you’ve got to be savvy about it.

First of all, make friends with the night watchman. That’s the guy that can have the fuzz come and take you away. Find out what kind of candy he likes and bring him some. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stayed in a station worry-free because of a few Bit O’Honeys.

Pick up an old bus ticket. That way, if somebody gives you trouble, you just say you’re waiting for a bus and show them the ticket. No one ever really bothers to look, so you should be golden. If they do look, run like hell.

Some idiot security guard comes by and asks why you’re sleeping on the benches? You’re from the bench company and you’re testing comfort levels. Be creative. Whatever you do, don’t say you’re the bus driver. I made that mistake once in the 60’s and I ended up driving a busload of people to Jacksonville.

It was a weeklong trip and it was hot as hell. By the third day, some of the passengers started cooking bacon on the floor. I couldn’t complain, though, because I was driving the best smelling bus on the East Coast.

There was a young man sitting in the back of the bus who claimed to be a magician. Said his name was “The Great Alamundo.” He went up and down the aisles doing card tricks for people to pass the time. His deck of cards only had diamonds and clubs, though. He told me he sold the spades and hearts a while back for a few packs of cigarettes. Now that’s a smart magician. When we stopped in Macon, GA, I bought a new deck of cards for the guy, but he wouldn’t accept it. Didn’t want to be a charity case, I guess. His loss.

Once the card tricks lost their fun, the passengers started to get rowdy. I knew I had to keep them occupied or they were going to revolt. Long story short, I got everyone singing Johnny Mathis songs and the mood changed in a hurry. By the time we got to Jacksonville, I could hardly pry those people out of their seats. I ended up selling the bus for $400 and living in Florida for eight months. All in all, it was a pretty good trip.

Creed Thoughts

So I’ve been thinking about running for Governor. There’re a lot of things wrong with Pennsylvania and since nobody’s answering my letters over at the Governor’s Office in Philadelphia, I think it’s time to take matters into my own hands. I know what you’re thinking and yes, they are wrinkled, but they’re still strong.

Number One on my list of changes: Pennsylvania should change its name to Transylvania. Lots of idiots buy all kinds of vampire rings and vampire necklaces and garlic-flavored vampire gum. There’s a lot of dough to be made from these suckers and I’m tired of seeing it go to foreigners. If we change the name of the state, we can probably do away with property tax considering the amount of souvenirs we’re going to sell. Also, vampire fans are notoriously good tippers.

Number Two: Cops’ uniforms should be neon yellow. The get-ups they wear now make it too hard to see them coming at night and I’m tired of those jerks sneaking up on me. If I’m elected Governor, I want to make sure that people know where cops are at all times.

Number Three: Soup kitchens have to offer more variety. From what I’ve heard, they serve the same soup two, three times a week. People really get sick of mushroom barley all the time, you know?

Number Three and a Half: Mushroom Barley soup will be illegal across the state. Honestly, I don’t think anyone’s going to miss it.

Number Four: Increase funding to all public schools.

Number Five: I will institute a database with pictures of every resident in the state naked. Every five years, a citizen can request to view any one person’s naked picture for a viewing period of ten minutes. After they’ve used up their viewing, they have to wait another five years until they can view another. It’s just not fair for all these foxy ladies to be walking around without anyone being able to see them naked. This is going to be the cornerstone of my campaign.

I’ve got a lot more ideas for making this state the best in the country and if you vote for me, I promise to listen to everything you have to say. Now, I know I haven’t voted for the past fifty years, but I think that’s going to give me a real leg up on the competition because they can’t attack me for my voting record. Stick with me and we’ll make some real changes to this stupid square state.

Vote Creed for Governor: “The Guy Who’s Going to Make You Rich Off of People Who Believe in Vampires!”

Driving into the lake was the dumbest Michael Moment in the entire series, I thought.

This season is not off to a good start.  I always thought that there was no such a thing as "too much Office," but these hour-long episodes are proving that wrong.

Hope it gets better.

The premiere was kind of a letdown IMO but last night's episode was funnier.  Michael driving into the lake fits in with the other stupid crap he's done over the years.  Burning his foot in the Foreman Grill was also up there.  Creed is always comedy gold.  Ryan has always seemed like a jerk, but he was more so last night.  Power and money will do that.

I agree.

I think it's better than last season, though.  By this time last year, hadn't we endured the rapping Michael?

I'm probably just happy about this season because I'm mostly a fan of the Jim & Pam Show.

Although Andy's bleeding nipples from the premiere is a series highlight, IMHO.

I can't decide how good last week's episode was.  I can't say I've been disappointed with this season, but it hasn't been as funny as the last.  I think it could just be the hour long episodes.  I think this show is best just as a half hour...need to get Jim to play a few more jokes on Dwight.

Answer.  How can you define this as the funniest show ever when you can't possibly have seen all the shows on TV in all languages.  A person would not have enough to time in their life to work and/i] see all of the world's funniest TV shows.  By using this logic, it is impossible to determine.

Anyway, I've been down on this season and these hour-long episodes, but I really liked this one.  Not enough Toby and Creed (but there's never enough of those guys).  The PowerPoint presentation was fantastic--some really quick, sharp writing.

I was listening to Opie and Anthony on the way home from work a couple of nights ago, and they said that NBC was canceling (outright) The Office, My Name is Earl, and 30 Rock.  It had something to do with the main actors of all three shows being writers as well and the fact that the strike is no where near to coming to an end.  Supposedly, they got the information on the Drudge Report.  I haven't heard anything about it since, and none of the other news sites have corroborated the story, so take it with a HUGE grain of salt at this point.  I know that Carell was thinking of leaving the show after the season, but I simply can't believe that NBC would cancel their entire Thursday night lineup.

Well, My Name is Earl, at least, doesn't fit in that category.  None of the main actors have writing credits on that show.  Jason Lee does have producer credits but that still doesn't wrap him up in the writer strike.

One report I read said that production crew could be laid off on many, if not all, shows as they aren't doing anything.  Actors have contracts so while they are out of work, unless the entire show is cancelled, they'll have a job to go back to.

Wish I could have watched.  I set the DVR and because we have severe weather in the area, that is all they have covered for the last ******* hour.  I'm just slightly pissed.  I got a grand total of 5 minutes of 2 shows that DVR'd over an hour and a half. Thank god they put the shows online so I can watch them later.

NIGHT OUT

Michael and Dwight decide to surprise Ryan in New York for a night of clubbing and meet his friends. Meanwhile, the Scranton branch is upset when they find out they have to come in on a Saturday for Ryan's website project. Jim's plan to save them has unexpected results.

Good episode last night.  Michael did his usual bit of hampering the actual productive influences of his staff, Dwight went off on a power trip that either no one cared about, or was the opposite of what anyone else would have done, Andy showed how pathetic and shallow he is (all show, no go), Pam got to regret more of her decisions when she was with Roy, and Jim actually tried.  It was pretty cool to see him like that.  I'm wondering if Jim will be Michael's new object of affection (he's got a girl, he does better at work, he's well liked at work, basically what Michael is not).

Post by: Tracy on May 9, 2008, 09:20 AM
Got to catch it on-line this morning.  Wondering if there is trouble brewing for the happy couple as Jim is starting to feel some sense of satisfaction at DMS after closing the deal, whereas Pam is beginning to feel more and more regret and desire to broaden her horizons.  I can't imagine that he would let her get away though.

Micheal was a grade-A dick tonight.  I nearly expected Pam to walk...........

Pretty good episode last night as a few have said.  Keonobi nailed it down on what happened.  I'm just sad that the season was so preempted because of the strike.  I think there were supposed to be something like 22 episodes this season and I'm guessing we got just over half of that.

Tracy, sorry about all the weather warnings, that happened to us a few weeks ago.

Tracy, sorry about all the weather warnings, that happened to us a few weeks ago.

Thanks.  I was a little bummed last night -- we got the kiddies off to bed and got chores out of the way so I would settle in to watch it (pretty much the only show I do that for).  I understand why that had to do it though -- there were quite a few tornadoes spotted in the viewing area.  It's all good -- I was able to watch it on-line this morning while Curious George was on. :)

Did you guys hear that NBC has been rumored to be developing a spin off.  I think I read somewhere that will premier after the superbowl next year.  There really weren't any details, which probably means nothing will happen, so I'm not sure if they'll do a similar mockumentary style at a whole new office, or if maybe it'll be about Toby (is he really going to Costa Rica?)..  Thoughts?  Also, how funny would it be that the new show would be a spin off of an adaptation?
Title: Re: The Office
Post by: Brian on May 9, 2008, 12:46 PM
Yeah, I actually read that a month or so back at TVGuide.com.  It sounds like it is indeed confirmed (via NBC's upfronts) that there will be an Office spinoff.  It won't be until midseason the way it sounds (I thnk you might be right about the SuperBowl info), and the rumor is they are looking for a "name" to lead it (ala Steve Carrell).  It could be interesting, I just hope it doesn't water down the original (well, original US) show, and "oversaturate" things with The Office.  I know I'll be paying attention though, there isn't enough good comedies on TV these days and so many networks seem afraid of them (or prefer reality junk).

While I was disappointed that Jim and Pam didn't get engaged, it ended up being fine - like Pam said - they are on solid ground.  Besides, Jim said that when he proposed, it would kick her ass.   That scene would have just been sweet, not ass-kicking..........

Anybody else think that Jim might be joining Pam in NY as Ryan's replacement?

The Kevin/Holly bit was priceless.  I wonder how long that can go on........

I loved the Dwangela bit at the end - it made up for my Jam disappointment.  :)
Title: Re: The Office
Post by: Keonobi on May 16, 2008, 09:03 AM
I can't even figure out what my favorite part of the episode was.  Was it Creed being unable to remember what he does, Michael actually being normal to a woman he likes (Holly), Kevin's "special" status, Jim nearly proposing to Pam, Ryan getting arrested (on YouTube!), or Dwight and Angela's wardrobe malfunction in accounting.  Great episode.  I'm really looking forward next season.  I'm wondering what they are going to do with Ryan's old job.  We already know that Jim was at least considered for the position previously (it wasn't shown, but did he actual turn David down for the job during the interview? I can't remember), he clearly is someone that David Hallob (sp?) CFO likes and with Pam going to the city, I think Jim might be tempted this time.

Again, great way to end the season.

Very possible.  I like that Jim just kept going off on Ryan over the phone.  I'm not sure how that would play out though.  I really need to see the Jim/Dwight interaction.  But, when Jim did leave before, they were able to keep the jokes going.  BTW, the prank last night was great I thought.

As slow as Kevin is, I bet they can drag that out for a while.  I thought it was pretty f'n funny last night because Kevin is such a dolt anyway.

Yeah, I'm hoping Andy goes by the wayside.  I want him still in the office, but Dwight/Angela is just great.

All in all, a great-great episode last night.  It really set stuff up for next season.  This I think will be one of my favorites.  Jenna Fischer was on Leno last week and mentioned several things in the interview that we would see.  All the things that she said came to pass, but not in the way you thought they would.  I'm guessing the show producers put her up to throwing in some stuff in the Leno interview.

I finally watched The Office last night and it was great.  One of the better episodes in a while.  The only (slight) disappointment was with all the good schtick there were no Stanley scenes.

The gimmick with Kevin was a blast and the cell phone prank rocked.  I'll be disappointed to see Toby leave but it made for a good episode.

And the YouTube video of Ryan getting arrested was funny as hell.  The actual video is really on YouTube: Whoaa!! Check it out !!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtTDz8e1P3Q).  I loved Oscar's commentary; "The real crime, I think, was the beard."

Can't wait till next season.

From some website:

Quote
'THE OFFICE' WEBISODES PREMIERE ON NBC.COM ON JULY 10th

Second Installment Sponsored by Comcast, Sony Electronics and Priceline

BURBANK, Calif. July 8, 2008 NBC.com today announced that "The Office" webisodes will go live on Thursday, July 10th at 3pm (ET) on NBC.com. The second series of webisodes for this popular NBC comedy are sponsored by Comcast, Sony Electronics and Priceline. The announcement was made by Vivi Zigler, President, NBC Universal Digital Entertainment.

"'The Office,' the show that pioneered webisodes two years ago, is back with another clever installment," said Zigler. "The huge online fan base will love seeing the exploits of Kevin, Oscar, Darrel and the gang as they figure out Kevin's financial future. It's a great summer treat for anyone who likes the show."

In "Kevin's Loan," the second series of "The Office" webisodes, Kevin (Brian Baumgartner) pursues a unique solution in an effort to pay back his looming gambling debts. This installment also stars Oscar Nunez, Leslie David Baker and Craig Robinson.

More Craig "Darrell" Robinson is a good thing, even if it's some crappy web exclusive thing.  Vastly underused on the regular show.  Cracks me up everytime he's on screen.

I'm really hoping that Michael and Dwight need to go visit Ryan in prison for some reason or another, like the password to a system or something.  I think it would be great to see the Michael and Dwight squeezed into the little booth trying to share the phone, because Dwight won't wait his turn.

Ever notice that Dwight is to Michael, kind of like Mose is to Dwight, the stupid sidekick....

The way last season left off was great!  I'm hoping that Ryan and Angela are still engaged, just so we can see more of Dwight mopey and maybe Phyllis can exact some revenge!

I'm really excited that the season is starting soon.

So anyone else get the vibe that Angela is pregnant.  She's been hooking up with Dwight, and during the weigh-in said that her doctor wants her to gain weight.  I mean, she's petite, but not scary small, so I think its because she's with "Shrute". :)

I liked the way Jim proposed, very much in keeping with how their relationship is, not too formal, but very much focused on all the little things, like where they first ate lunch together, etc.

One of the best scenes was when Holly tried to stop Angela from yelling at Kevin.  I am surprised that Dwight wasn't again punished by Michael for that, like maybe he'd have to make him breakfast, in addition to doing his laundry, plus that way Michael won't burn his foot again (Win-Win-Win).

This was a great episode overall.  The show is at its best when Michael is awkward like this versus when they make him a total jerk (shock does not always equal funny).  The proposal was great and totally threw me off, since Pam seemed to be getting more and more preoccupied at school.  Dwight is still the best thing going on that show.

Brilliant! I really loved this episode. Everything up until the ending did have the classic feel, much like you guys said. They better not force a break up, ugh....following typical show ways.

"I don’t want to be married in a tent like a Hobo." lol that's awesome :p

"I’ve caught Jim talking to himself several times today. What a loser. Get a friend, loser."

and The Jim/Dwight stuff was hilarious. Mr. Buttlicker was priceless

I liked Michael's argument with his mom.  He tells her he's getting married "No you're not".  "Why do you always say that?".  Oh too funny.

OK, so Jim and Pam make Jam, does that make Andy and Angela Ang-dy or And-gela?  Or simply An-dy or An-gela.

Who here thinks that since Angela is getting married at Schrute farms that there might be an objection during the ceremony, and a certain mustard-shirt wearing salesman might get the accountant of his dreams?  Also, what is Angela doing?  Does she like Andy at all?  I thought Andy was just to get back at Dwight, but she's back with Dwight for all accounts and purposes.  I'm sure that'll come to a head at some point, which might be why that plot line is allowed to grow.

I thought something was going to happen with Andy, he always seemed to be in the other room during this episode.  I was half expecting that he would be the one to end up in rehab for alcohol problems, he seemed to have a history...

I don't think Dwight has quite won Angela just yet.  She was pretty pissed about the marriage thing.  Last week she told Andy she had a "legal matter" to take care of.  I wonder if she did or not?  Also, I thought Jenna Fisher looked preggers in last week's episode - merely an observation - not necessarily relevant.....

Andy is going to have a relapse and the next episode will feature him back in anger management.  This is when the office is at its best.  Anyone else get a kick out of Andy's East Coast prepschool-yacht club clothes?  The plaid pants, etc.  I think its one of the more subtle things the office does to be funny.  That and when the camera pans around the office, you see half a dozen computer monitors with solitaire being played.

What is your favorite subtle thing on the office?

Title: Re: The Office
Post by: Matt on January 29, 2009, 03:36 PM
No new episode tonight, presumably due to the new one-hour episode ("Stress Relief") directly following the Super Bowl on Sunday.

'Office' is open for business Sunday after Super Bowl (http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2009-01-28-super-bowl-office_N.htm)

Quote
The hour-long episode (approximately 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 PT) includes cameos by Jack Black, Jessica Alba and Cloris Leachman, and a double burn for workers at Dunder Mifflin paper: a real fire and an awkward roast of misguided supervisor Michael Scott (Steve Carell).

. . .

Considering the many first-time viewers, Sunday's episode will forgo ongoing story arcs "to go from big comedy set piece to big comedy set piece," says executive producer Greg Daniels.

In the episode, Dwight starts a fire after no one heeds his fire-safety instructions. That leads Michael to conduct a relaxation seminar that raises tension. He seeks to ease it by making himself the subject of a comic roast that basically turns into a self-basting.

The cameos come via a pirated movie watched by some Office workers, with Black and Alba as a couple and Leachman as Alba's grandmother.

"If we're just casting some salesman that comes into the office and it's Jack Black, it's hard to believe that," says Paul Lieberstein, an executive producer who also plays human resources sad sack Toby Flenderson. Lieberstein, who wrote the episode, offers a tease about the Black-Alba-Leachman film: "It's a love triangle."

Tonight's episode is a rerun of "Business Ethics," which was the second episode from earlier this season.

I loved getting to see the preview for the post Super Bowl show.  That looks like it's going to be hilarious.

I've got to say last nights rerun is one of the better ones from this season.  Jim getting Dwight on the stop watch is classic.

cool to have a new episode right after the super bowl too bad for me i think it was my least favorite episode ever. If not it's in the bottom 5 for sure. In the discussion this week we talked about this episode getting the show new viewers and i don't think that happened. It was kind of interesting how they handled the big guest stars. I think it worked well for the show, but it was almost like a joke on those people who tuned in to see those stars.

The Michael roast was really uncool. not funny. alot meaner then i think the characters are. Although it was awkward which i normally love, it didn't play out right.

I did have a few laughs like andy misunderstanding what jim and pam were talking about.

well another one in a few days, i'm sure they will rebound Smile kind of a big spoiler for the next episode though. they didn't need to give that away.

on a side note it was cool to see the promo for the pohler show. parks are rec? hmmm......guess it's gonna replace kath and kim. hope it's good.

New episode tonight!

"Lecture Circuit (Part One)"

Michael goes on a speaking tour of the other branches to explain Scranton's relative success, accompanied by his driver, Pam. Karen is back with quite a surprise. Back at the office, Dwight and Jim - now the heads of the party planning committee - forget a birthday, with severe consequences. Meanwhile, Andy falls for someone he should not.

Part Two next week.

New episode tonight!

"Blood Drive"

It's Valentine's Day at the office. Michael meets a mysterious woman at a Valentine's blood drive. Dwight and Kevin pair up with single women at the office "Lonely Hearts Party." Meanwhile Jim and Pam are banished from the office for being too publicly affectionate, and have an awkward lunch with Phyllis and Bob Vance.

Lecture Circuit was originally only supposed to be one episode instead of two, and there was some other scheduling weirdness which led to this one being pushed back.

OK, so towards the beginning of last nights episode, when Michael was trying to explain away all the announcements that Charles (his new boss was making) that there was to be no more discretionary spending (parties, etc.); something that Michael was supposed to have announced the prior week, I couldn't help but get the feeling that Michael can't keep going like this.  This is the third boss who he would annoy and would spend his time undermining, but they would tolerate it because of his sales team's performance.  Well, at some point that had to stop.  I guess it was tonight.

I can't believe he quit.  But then again the fun, free-wheeling boss only works if he's given a lot of latitude and still produces results.  The tone of the show has been the paper business isn't doing so well, and then the economy took a downturn, so Dunder Mifflin is going to do the corporate thing and squeeze as hard as they can to wring any bit of inefficiency out.  As much as I'd hate to see Steve Carrell leave, or any of the cast really, I just can't see how Michael can bounce back from this.

Great episode though.  Really reminded me of the British office in the way that Michael spent the whole time trying to keep things cool with his "friends" (his employees) while trying to get his boss to try to reverse a policy, then trying to claim that it can't be done to him since its his branch, and then essentially whining because he doesn't think the company treats him well.

Oh, I don't think he'll leave.  But if he did, he'd only be the 8th character to do so (Andy, Oscar, Toby, Jan all left the show for a while and Jim, Dwight and Ryan all left the Scranton branch only to come running back).  And that's a problem, to me, having characters keep coming back.

Just seems that after a while someone is going to be tired of Michael's antics and he'll be fired.  Or is he just going to drive Charles nuts because the Scranton branch is too needy, he'll beg Michael to come back, and then quit...

Carell signed on to do another three seasons before this season started, so he's not going anywhere.  (And this is why the internet sucks--it totally takes the fun out of things like this.)

Love the new dynamic the new guy brings, though.  The office needs a good shake-up, something to set it on it's ear for a while.  And I really like seeing Michael and Jim being kept in check for once in the show's history.

I thought Jim's position as Assistant Regional Manager was more than the title only position that Dwight had (Assistant to the Regional Manager).  Didn't Jan make that position for Jim?  Or is that the point, that despite everything Jim fell for the same thing Dwight did, just a title promotion?
Title: Re: The Office

It was originally just a bull**** title to placate Dwight, but then the thing with Jan and Jim made it seem like there really was something to it.  But now it seems like it was a bull**** title all along.

Loved the little bit with Jim correcting Charles about it--what a great callback to the early seasons.

"Dream Team"

Quote
After getting off on the wrong foot with his new supervisor, Charles, Jim finds himself face to face with the new boss in a soccer game in the Dunder Mifflin parking lot. Meanwhile, Michael, afraid to face the workday, has trouble leaving his house.

"The Michael Scott Paper Company"

Dwight and Andy strike up an unlikely friendship and plan a hunting trip. Regional Supervisor Charles asks Jim for a "rundown", and Jim spends his day trying to figure out what that is. Michael hosts a Paper & Pancakes luncheon.

"Dream Team" airs at 8/7c, and then they're premiering the new Parks and Recreation at 8:30/7:30c, and then "The Michael Scott Paper Company" airs at the normal time at 9/8c.

I wasn't blown away by P&R, but I think that its because it was sandwiched by the office, and then 30 Rock.  And those characters have had the time to develop some.  I know I've gone back and rewatched the first episode of some shows I like and the pilot is terrible.  That said, I think they are going to have to make it so the characters are more distinct and give the show its own flavor in order for it to survive.  Otherwise it'll become stale fast, especially since the format is so similar to the office, if they keep it in an adjacent time slot.  It might have felt funnier if it was on Tuesday or something, but I think they were trying to capture the Office's fanbase, we'll see whether they do this, or whether P&R becomes the Coke2 of comedy night done right.

This show has lost a lot of its appeal to me.  It has its funny moments but nothing that kills me with gut laughter like it used to.  Michael has gone from being a likeable idiot to an unlikeable dumb****, Jim doesn't have the comedic impact that he once did, and the side characters seem to be even more minimally important than before.  Dwight is still funny but kind of underutilized.  I don't know...I usually miss it during its normal airtime and as each week goes by I find myself less and less interested in going back and watching the DVR'd episode.

My wife and I kind of liked that development, at least for the hopefully avoided notion of having them make up/break up all the time.  When they first got them together, I was worried they would do the typical sitcom route of having them almost get together, then not quite...then they do, and break up (Friends' Ross/Rachel is often used an example).  If they can just make it work with them actually together (which I think worked this season), it would be nice to just seem them stay a couple and follow other stories elsewhere.

The Office has been one of our favorite shows since it began, and I'd hate to see it go as well.  At the same time, although there have been some funny moments this season, it doesn't seem to be quite up to the levels of the last few seasons.  I think if Carrell indeed was leaving after next year, it would be a good time to just wrap the show up.  They, of course, probably won't do that and the show won't be nearly as good because of it.  There are a lot of shows these days that although I still watch them and enjoy them, I'd sort of like to see them end "on a high note".

This happened last year with the show Scrubs.  I don't know if anyone watches/watched, but they had a great finale that was designed as a "series finale", but then ABC picked up the show so they ran a sort of "spin off" with a couple of the same cast but mostly new characters (and the same name).  It was mildly amusing, but just not "Scrubs" to me.  Anyways, on a more positive note, if anyone is looking for a good comedy to check out - give a watch to Modern Family on ABC (Wednesday nights).  Probably one of the funniest shows on TV right now I think.
Title: Re: The Office
Post by: Chris M on April 30, 2010, 11:37 AM
Good points about Carrell.  I too would like to see it go on a high note, but just hate the idea of not watching it weekly just because it's one of the few shows I actually care about.

Modern Family is hilarious.  I don't usually DVR it, but will watch an episode here or there if I've got time.  The Middle is pretty good.  I think to understand that one best you need to have grown up in a big family.  I did, being the oldest of 4, so some of the events really hit close to home and I can really relate to them.

Sounds like Steve Carell is definitely done (http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/06/28/steve-carell-office-exit/) after the upcoming season (Season 7).  As much as we love the show, I almost wish they would just wrap it up when he leaves...and leave it on a high note.  I guess I've seen more than a few of our favorite shows hang on a little too long, that I'd almost rather it would wrap up while it is still on top.  Of course, it won't, and probably can/will go another few seasons.

Scoop! The Office's Big Goodbye Is Sooner Than You Think (http://www.tvline.com/2011/01/scoop-the-offices-big-goodbye-is-sooner-than-you-think/#more-184120)

Quote
Just when you thought you’d heard everything about The Office‘s farewell storyline for Steve Carell (and thus Michael Scott), this bit of news comes bounding in: Carell’s final appearance on the beloved NBC comedy will air well before this season itself ends.

“Steve is leaving earlier than the [season finale],” reveals executive producer Greg Daniels, who expects to pen Carell’s swan song himself. Specifically, he says, “The big ‘Goodbye, Steve’ thing will be before [May] sweeps.”

Given the timing of Carell’s exit, what will the final weeks of this season then be about? “Our basic plan,” Daniels says, “is to see the jockeying and interviewing [for Michael's job], and not have that happen off-camera and suddenly present America with the choice. We’d rather play out the stories of the various characters who want that seat, and show them fight for it.”

“It’s kind of a fun situation,” Daniels says, “and the chaos is creatively exciting.” As longtime Office viewers can attest, “Whenever something with big stakes happens, it leads to good episodes — and we will have a lot of significant things happening.”

On hand to select Michael’s successor will be Kathy Bates, reprising her role of Jo Bennett, the country-fried CEO of Dunder-Mifflin’s parent company, Sabre. (Bates already has completed filming the first season of NBC’s Harry’s Law, which debuts January 17.) “We’re going to play out the whole [replacement] process in a realistic way,” says Daniels. “And it’s always great to have Kathy here.”

The outcome of the interview process will feed the season finale, which is tentatively set to run an hour. The extra time may very well be needed to showcase not just the reveal of the new boss but the various employees’ reactions to whomever he or she is. “They’re all different people with strong personalities,” Daniels notes, “so they each have a lot invested in who’s their new boss.”

Have no clue who they're gonna go with to replace Michael.
Title: Re: The Office
Post by: Keonobi on January 14, 2011, 01:17 PM
Kind of sad to here he's leaving sooner, but it does set up the interview process which should be entertaining.  BTW, if they are interviewing for his position AFTER he leaves, does that mean he leaves rather suddenly?  I hope they don't kill him off.

Todd Packer?  (or is it Packard?)

Dwight is going to want the power, but probably would be passed over.

Jim's best at being the reasonable one without the power to fix anything.

Darrell?  Is clearly competent enough to manage (he was the warehouse foreman since before the show started..)

The gangly guy from Saber, I can't recall his name...

Anyone else from the regular show cast that would obviously want the job and would actually be in a position to be considered?  Clearly they are going to have some non-regulars interviewing as well.

Yeah, if they don't knock it out of the park with the interview episodes it will probably mark the end point of the show.

I'll admit I like a lot of crappy shows and dislike a number of shows that are widely popular, but the BBC Office was excellent in that most fans wished they had made more episodes and not fewer....

There's a good reason they only put Packer on every once in a blue moon.  A little of him goes a looooonnng way.  Not saying I don't like him, I do, but the show would die a very quick and ugly death with Todd F. Packer in charge of the Scranton branch.

Show's doomed already with no Steve Carell, though.

More on the remainder of this season

Quote
In an upcoming episode, titled "Threat Level Midnight", that will air February 17, 2011, will revolve around the screening of Michael's film where all the office employees portray the characters in the film. The episode will feature Melora Hardin as Jan, and the return of Rashida Jones as Karen, David Denman as Roy and Andy Buckley as David Wallace.

This sounds like it could be really good.

Quote
During NBC's TCA press tour, it was confirmed that Steve Carell will depart with four episodes left to go in the season, with the remaining episodes focusing on the search for (and selection of) his replacement as office manager. Executive producer Greg Daniels, who will be writing Carell's farewell, stated the top candidates are Andy, Dwight, and Darryl, or possibly a newcomer. He also stated that whoever becomes the new manager will not become the main focus of the show like Michael was, and that two new regular cast members will join next season.

Out of those three, I'd like to see Darryl take it.

There's also been some speculation that the Timothy Olyphant traveling salesman character they introduced earlier this season could be brought back to be the manager.

Too funny...I started a long post in this thread last week and then deleted it because it sounded too crankypants.

I HATE what this show has become...it has dropped off steeply from the first couple of seasons. If you go back and watch that first year, and then watch one from this season it is like night and day.

Dwight was much more entertaining as an abused dweeb than as a diabolical, agressive jerk.

Jim used to be the smart one that never got punked. Now he's as stupid as the rest of them.

You hardly get anything with the supporting cast anymore too - where's my Creed jokes?

The Andy/Gabe/Erin thing has drawn on agonizingly slow. And why  is everyone suddenly gay? First Oscar, then Gabe, and now HRG. (The Senator dude from Heroes) And yeah, I know Gabe has not officially been outed but this has been a running gag for some time. (Dressed up as Lady Gaga, the passive aggressive naked man at his gym comment, etc)

I dearly wish they would yank this show as it has been DOA for some time now.

And I think the new Boss has to be Timothy Olyphant, no way that guy comes in to do two random guest episodes out of the blue and then disappears forever.

“James will reprise his role as Robert California, this uber-salesman that has a power to convince and manipulate, like a high-class weirdo Jedi warrior,” said Paul Lieberstein, one of the series’ executive producers and a series regular. “He’ll have been hired over the summer as the new manager, but within hours, got himself promoted. Within days, he took over the company. James has an energy that is completely his own, and The Office has no tools for dealing with this guy. We’re thrilled he’s joining our cast.”

NBC is set to announce the hire, adding a new well-known actor to the ensemble series that saw the departure of its biggest star, Steve Carell, this season, and will also say goodbye to recurring performer Kathy Bates as well. Bates played the company’s CEO last season, though Spader’s character is expected to have a greater presence on the show. EW first broke the news of Spader in talks for the part a CEO role week ago.

I like Kathy Bates as an actress, but I hated her character and I'm glad to see her gone.  This is a good change--makes the show much more interesting.

I'm actually on board with this. Outside of that dreadful Boston Legal show, I've enjoyed Spader's body of work to this point. And he was definitely the most interesting of the characters they rotated through for the finale.

Although Will Arnett would have been great too if he could have channeled a little more of his Todd Margaret character. That **** was brilliant.

I stopped watching The Office about half-way through last season and I actually don't miss it.  I thought I would, but, eh.

I will be tuned in to celebrate its demise for sure. SO happy this show is ending, it has not been very good since Carrell left. Not bad enough to force me to stop watching, but it's been an effort to keep up this 10 season committment, especially lately.

There are plenty of problems you can point to, but in general I think they fell into the Seinfeld trap where the characters intially seemed quirky and amusing but gradually over time became pretty loathsome and unappealing. A lot of the early sweetness of the show was replaced by cynicism and snark. Everyone began back-stabbing, sleeping around, etc. Even the heart and soul of the show, Jim & Pam, both became pretty unlikeable this season after all their contrived marital drama. (Note to Hollywood writers - people outside of Hollywood actually enjoy happy marriages, they're not all embittered and self-absorbed as you seem to be fixated on)

I liked Dwight as a hapless dweeb that was annoying but constantly tormented as Jim. I liked Ryan as the quiet, nerdy intern. And I liked Andy and Erin as Jim/Pam II. (Sorry Plop, you were too handsome and unfunny to ever warm up to)

Anyway, they had a good run. A lot of high moments...Michael burning his foot in bed on the George Foreman grill will always be a classic.

I agree with you that it hasn't been as good since Carrell left but I do think this last season was one of the better ones in a long time.  The revenge of Packer, Work Bus, Lice...it was prett even and better than the last few seasons for sure.

The worst thing to happen to the show is what they have done with Andy.  I hate his character and what he has become.  So much so that I dreaded him coming back this year.  There is nothing redeeming or funny about him.

With 30 Rock and The Office ending there isn't much I will watch each week any more.  Modern Family is still on our DVR list but it is getting a little stale.  Lots of great memories and hope it is a good one tonight.

Andy always was an annoying douche.  Even back when Jim first met him.  They tried to grow him a bit, but it seems like he sort of reverted and fell apart.

I've read about the "happy ending" and it just pisses me off.  Some people don't deserve happy endings.

Although I agree that it hasn't been the same since Steve Carrell left, but I'm still kind of sad it is ending.  We will definitely be tuning in tonight, and I hope it has a great send off.  I agree, it is probably time for it to go, but it is always a little sad when one of your all time favorites closes shop.  Like Scott said, I thought this season was actually a little better - and probably the best of the post-Michael seasons.  Overall, one of my all time favorite shows.  It was one of those that my wife and I have an extra attachment to because we tuned in from the very first airing of the first episode - before all the hype began after it.  Also the fact that we were working in an Office (not all that different) at the time, it was just perfect.  Anyways, one of my all time favorite shows, and although it is probably time, I'm still a little sad about it.

It is also a little depressing as a sitcom fan, that we've been losing so much over the past few years, particularly favorites of mine.  Scrubs a couple years ago, now the Office and 30 Rock, things are getting sort of slim.  Big fan of Parks and Rec (which is returning), as well as Modern Family and the Big Bang Theory but it seems to drop off a bit after that.  We also watch Community, which is supposed to be back maybe mid-season next year.  We've always watched How I Met Your Mother, but that is another show that I think should have wrapped things up a couple seasons ago.  Anyways, back on topic, looking forward to tonight's big finale and retrospective.  We've been going through and watching the past seasons on DVD the past few weeks - so much funny :).

Wow, I feel like an ahole now for badmouthing the show earlier. That was ones of the best series finales I have ever seen. I'm a sucker for happy endings though. Carrell's cameo was awesome, not overdone. Creed's backstory was epic. Even the shmaltzy stuff was well done. (Yay Erin!) A very fitting send off for a show that had a great run.

Ain't no party like a Scranton party!

Great finale.  The only thing I would have changed was that line Michael Scott delivered about his children getting married.  It was really funny, but it would have been so awesome if the only thing you hear his character say in the final episode was "That's what she said!"

Agreed that this was really well done, again the only negative me was the whole Andy crap.  Loved the Michael stuff, a tear went down my cheek when he showed up.  Creed's song was great and it was a really good way to end the show.
